July 18, 2021: Tourism return to Argentina. When?

We give you this suggestion based on news items and official announcements from the Argentinean government. Latest update on July 18, 2021.

The borders of Argentina are partly reopened and this is only for the following persons:

  • Argentinians and residents of Argentina.
  • SUSPENDED! Foreigners that have direct family contact with an Argentinian. You need to prove this by birth certificate, marriage, or cohabitation certificate. The document needs to be legalized by an apostille stamp of your home country (more info below).

The Argentinian border remains closed for other foreigners until August 6, 2021.

Sadly, other international tourism from the USA or Europe is not allowed. The border remains closed for other foreigners (see exceptions above).

What do I expect?

Currently, the second wave is getting under control but the government is anxious for the Delta variant. Infections in de city of Buenos Aires are decreasing. Nevertheless, the positivity ratio is still at 25%. This means that many covid-19 infections are still going around undetected. The government wants to reduce this percentage quickly.

Plans to open borders with neighboring countries have also been postponed until further notice. The government considers tourism from Chile and Brazil more important than travelers from other countries. And even now if they postpone travel from neighboring countries, things don’t look good.

Moreover, there are no plans on the table yet on how to receive tourists who have been fully vaccinated. Setting up a vaccination passport is not for now.

You also have to take into account that winter arrived (in Argentina starts in June). Now the spread was somewhat suppressed because many activities took place outside during summer. In winter people visit each other indoors, which increases the chance of spreading. The flu season is also coming and this will cause confusion between the flu and COVID-19.

So, there is still a lot to happen and I personally feel more and more that tourism will no longer be possible in 2021. I believe that 2022 will be the year of gradual reopening.

In previous reports, I assumed a reactivation of foreign tourism for July 2021. But I am now leaning more towards beginning 2022. These are personal findings because the government is not proposing anything concrete.

If you are curious about the flight statuses in Argentina? I wrote an article with the actual status of flights and regulations in Argentina.

Reopening borders of Argentina

The borders of Argentina are closed until August 6, 2021 (Link to official decree).

The government reviews the “Prohibition of entry into the national territory” every two/three weeks.

Don’t forget to complete the passenger locator form < 48h prior to your arrival. It’s a step forward in the process of reopening the borders of Argentina. We made a video on how to complete the form because not everything is clear.
