Travel news from around the world

Singapore has no shortage of high-end hotels, but that isn’t stopping The Standard from adding The Red Dot to its growing network.

Executive Traveller readers may already be familiar with The Standard New York, Los Angeles and London – each of which showcases the boutique brand’s focus on a design-savvy lifestyle audience – or, in its own words, a “taste-making clientele.”

With 143 rooms, the hotel will be crowned by the now-mandatory rooftop infinity pool and pool bar, albeit one set within a lush botanical courtyard; also set to feature are The Standard’s “signature restaurant and nightlife vibrancy, and arts and cultural programming.”

“Singapore has emerged into an incredibly important and innovative hub in Asia and we couldn’t be more excited about this development,” said Standard International Chief Executive Officer, Amar Lalvani, adding praise for the “culturally rich and dynamic city.”

2023 will also see the opening of The Standard Melbourne, with the inner-city suburb of Fitzroy marking the brand’s Australian debut.

The Woods Bagot-designed site on Rose Street Fitzroy will offer 127 rooms over seven levels, and take its design cues from the local area and its long-standing industrial heritage.

“Fitzroy’s history of corner pubs, workers cottages, grand housing and industry inspired our approach to the building’s façades,” offers Peter Miglis, Regional Design Leader for Woods Bagot.

“Weathered steel and concrete are robust, timeless materials that sit comfortably straight away and, over time, will add charm as they patina.”

Thailand is also on The Standard’s coming-soon list, with The Standard Hua Hin set to open in November 2021, followed by The Standard Bangkok Mahanakhon in 2022.

Slated to open in 2023, The Standard Singapore will see a new building arise on Orange Grove Road, across from the Shangri-La Singapore and at the heart of a triangle formed by the Botanic Gardens, Newton Circus hawker centre and the start of the Orchard Road shopping strip – each of which represents a core part of the Singapore experience.
