Where is this beautiful castle?

Buda Castle, Budapest, Hungary

The historical castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest. It was first completed in 1265, but the massive Baroque palace today occupying most of the site was built between 1749 and 1769. The castle now houses the Hungarian National Gallery and The Budapest History Museum.

Buda Castle sits on the southern tip of Castle Hill, surrounded by the touristic area known as Várnegyed (Castle Quarter), which is famous for medieval, Baroque and Neoclassical houses, churches, public buildings, and monuments. The hill is linked to Clark Ádám Square and the Széchenyi Chain Bridge by the Castle Hill Funicular.

The castle is a part of the Budapest World Heritage Site, so declared in 1987. The original Royal Palace was ruined during WWII, it was rebuilt in a simplified Stalin Baroque style during the Kádár era.

Near the Central (main) facade of the Palace overlooking the Danube river, is the so-called Palace of the Danube terrace of Buda or terrace, which offer stunning panoramic views of the Danube river, district of pest, including Vigado concert hall, Gresham Palace, St. Stephen’s Basilica and the remarkable Hungarian Parliament building which is one of characters and one of the main attractions of Budapest.

Germany:

Where is the “Happiest House on Earth?”

Happy Rizzi House, Brunswick, Germany is a day-glo masterpiece of cartoon-inspired architecture set smack in the heart of a staid German historic neighbourhood.

Standing in stark contrast to its old world surroundings, the Happy Rizzi House is the vision of New York pop artist James Rizzi (perhaps best known for designing the cover for Tom Tom Club’s 1981 debut album) and architect Konrad Kloster.

Representative of Rizzi’s style, the structures are decorated in wild shapes and faces coloured in bright pinks, yellows, and greens reminiscent of an 80’s music video.

The psychedelic cluster of buildings was not an instant hit with the surrounding city since the tall buildings’ cacophony of color is in direct visual opposition to both the business district on one side of it and the old world European architecture on the other. However the goofy faces with unevenly spherical eyes (which are also windows) have come to be accepted as a unique and important part of the landscape, acting as the unofficial border between the two portions of the city the site straddles.

Unfortunately Rizzi passed away in 2011, but the Happy Rizzi House, as easily his largest piece of work, assures that his off the wall vision of the world will live on for years to come.

Where is this magnificent library?

The library of the Premonstratensian monastery at Strahov, Czech Republic, is one of the most valuable and best-preserved historical libraries – its collection consists of approximately 200,000 volumes.

The oldest part of the library, the Baroque Theological Hall, was established between 1671 and 1674; the main Classicist vaults of the Philosophical Hall date from 1794 and are two storeys tall. Both halls are dominated by ceiling frescoes by Siard Nosecký and Anton Maulbertsch.

Strahov Library is the largest monastic library in the country, with two magnificent baroque halls dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The stunning interior of the two-storey-high Philosophy Hall was built to fit around the carved and gilded, floor-to-ceiling walnut shelving that was rescued from another monastery in South Bohemia (access to the upper gallery is via spiral staircases concealed in the corners).

The feeling of height here is accentuated by a grandiose ceiling fresco, Mankind’s Quest for True Wisdom – the figure of Divine Providence is enthroned in the centre amid a burst of golden light, while around the edges are figures ranging from Adam and Eve to the Greek philosophers.

Croatia:

Do you know what is the location of the famous movie Mamma Mia 2?

It is one of our favorite islands in Croatia; farthest from the mainland, away from the crowds to enjoy stunning untouched nature.

The mysterious and irresistible island of Vis – a paradise island with one of the world’s finest beaches, Stiniva.

An island that has been partly isolated as a military island for almost half a century, something that has been a disadvantage has now become an asset. Vis is an island of untouched nature, a treat for lovers of Robinson tourism, and as such it has not been missed by Hollywood producers.

Already, after the first sight at the island, the producers immediately estimated that Vis would perfectly play the role of the Greek island, on which the previous sequel to this global movie hit was filmed.

The filmmakers, present at the shootings, were satisfied with the cooperation with the local authorities and the local population, their amiability, professionalism and kindness, which was truly “up to the task”. And everyone was involved, there is no home or family on the island who did not participate in the film, which, in the summer of 2018, was the most viewed film of the season.

Where is this unusually shaped building?

Riga Central Market, Latvia, The Baltics

It is not only one of the largest marketplaces in Eastern Europe in area, but also one of the most visited, as 80,000-100,000 people shop there per day on the average.

Architecturally-imposing food pavilions, built in the 1920s, are Riga Central Market’s calling card. Originally used as military airship hangars, they were later transformed into market venues.

Riga Central Market is unique not only with its pavilions but also with its old warehouses or the so-called spikeri (from German Spéicher), which have now been turned into a hip arts&entertainment quarter.

In 1998, the vast territory of Riga Central Market was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

At Riga Central Market, you can buy Latvian-grown and homemade products, exotic fruit and spices, as well as manufactured merchandise. The market includes 5 pavilions each with its own category – vegetables, dairy, meat, fish and gastronomy products, as well as an outdoor area with stalls and stands, the Night Market and ‘Round the Clock Farmers’ Market.

Austria:

Where is the highest waterfall in Europe?

Krimml Waterfalls, Austria

With their impressive waterfall drop of 380 meters, the Krimml Waterfalls are the fifth highest in the world and Europe’s tallest waterfalls.

Located in the High Tauern National Park near the village of Krimml, in the Salzburg district, this is a tiered waterfall with three distinct drops.

The falls occur on the Krimmler Ache river which is sometimes referred to as a glacial stream as it is fed by waters from a melting glacier but the rate of flow varies greatly throughout the year as it channels the waters of the melting alpine snows. The Krimml Waterfalls are therefore at their most spectacular during the spring and early summer.

After passing through the falls, the waters of the river then join the rivers Salzach, Inn and Danube eventually discharging into the Black Sea.

The beauty of these spectacular falls has long been recognised and the paths allowing access to visitors date back to the 19th century. The paths and viewing points are well maintained allowing for safe and relatively simple access for those with good standards of fitness and mobility.

Costa Rica:

Where does this amazing phenomenon take place?

The beach of Ostional in Costa Rica is the scenery for a rarely-seen biological wonder.

In rainy season, the week before new moon, hundreds – and sometimes hundreds of thousand sea turtles come to one specific mile of beach at Ostional to dig their eggs into the black, volcanic sand.

Every month at Costa Rica’s Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, tens to hundreds of thousands of female sea turtles arrive, often within a few days of each other, to lay their eggs on the beach.

The Ostional Wildlife Refuge was created in 1984 to protect the area from poachers stealing the sea turtle eggs. This makes this National Wildlife Refuge a very important Sea Turtle Conservation project.

But what makes Ostional Beach so special is the size of the arribadas, or “arrivals”. They are truly massive and at its peak, there are so many turtles it is almost impossible to walk on the beach! As a result, the first eggs often end up being trampled by the following turtles. For this reason it is legal for locals to collect some of the eggs.

It was dedicated in 1925, it was located in what was then one of the wealthiest sections of the city, on land adjacent to the Stephen Dorsey mansion and Stimson House. It was the second Roman Catholic church in Los Angeles to be consecrated.

The climactic scene of the 1999 film End of Days, featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger’s battle against Satan was filmed in the church. The church’s altar is featured prominently in the film’s final scenes. The church also appears in the movie Constantine. The church was also featured in the Warrant video “The Bitter Pill” (acoustic version), with lead singer Jani Lane performing the song in front of and around the church.

The church was also featured in the Charmed episode “When Bad Warlocks Turn Good”; furthermore the church is visible in the Madonna’s music video of “God Control”, and some parts of it in her video of “Dark Ballet”.

Las Vegas:

Where would you find this huge mural?

The Plaza Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas.

Las Vegas has embraced downtown’s growing art culture. In February 2017, the Plaza debuted two 21-story murals by internationally known artists, Shepard Fairey and D*Face on its North Tower.

In September 2017, the artistic duo of Faile debuted the third mural on the north tower, which pays tribute to the Dogs Playing Poker paintings by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge. The trio of murals – likely the largest ever installed on a single building – add a vibrant artistic flare to the Plaza without compromising its historic integrity or classic ambiance.

The murals are a unique element that further diversifies the visitors’ experience at the Plaza.
“The scale of this, when you stand underneath it, is just amazing,” Jonathan Jossel, the hotel’s CEO, said as he peered up from the fifth floor pool deck.

Willis Tower and the Skydeck, Chicago

Willis Tower—originally known as the Sears Tower—was the world’s tallest building for 23 years until it was unseated in 1996 by the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.

The 110-story skyscraper is still mighty impressive.
The tower’s height is even more thrilling when measured from the 103rd-floor windows of the Skydeck observatory and the Ledge, a glass-enclosed box which juts more than four feet out from the side of the building so that visitors can (gingerly) walk out and stand 1,353 feet above the street.

Vietnam:

Where is this Palace situated?

Its the Presidential Palace Hanoi, Vietnam

Constructed in 1900 by French architect Auguste Henri Vildieu, was intended to be Ho Chi Minh’s official residence but the Vietnamese leader had opted for a traditional Vietnamese stilt-house instead. The three-storey, mustard yellow building features 30 rooms built in colonial French architectural style, an orchard, carp pond, and a 91-metre long boulevard surrounded by lush gardens.

The Presidential Palace is a yellow three storey building constructed in Renaissance and Beaux Art style. The French colonial rulers had a civilizing mission and believed that European architectural styles were superior to traditional Asian housing design. The building has no Asian architectural feature. The building stands behind strong wrought iron gates with sentry boxes on either side.

The palace is surrounded by expansive grounds including an alley with mango trees that leads to a humble structure on stilts occupied by Ho Chi Minh. After independence, Ho Chi Minh refused to live in the presidential palace and chose to stay in the servant’s quarters till his small cottage was constructed in the grounds.

The cottage called uncle Ho’s cottage or the Nha San Bac Ho, is designed like the traditional houses in North West Vietnam that offered shelter to revolutionaries during their struggle for independence from the French rulers.

Qatar:

Do you recognise this amazing building?

Its the National Museum of Qatar, Doha

A series of colliding discs form the external shell and define the internal programme of Atelier Jean Nouvel’s National Museum of Qatar, which is based on a mineral formation called the “desert rose”.

The project led by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel is located on a prominent site within a newly developed civic quarter that connects it with other cultural institutions including I M Pei’s Museum of Islamic Art.

More than a decade in the making, the National Museum of Qatar is designed to tell the story of the country’s history and its ambitions for the future.
“This is a 21st-century museum that allows you to experience the exhibits in three dimensions,” said the architect at the museum’s inauguration. “It aims to be a destination for people from around the world that reflects the contemporary spirit of Qatar.”

The building’s dramatic shape is inspired by the desert rose – a mineral formation created when minerals crystallise below the surface of a salt basin into an array of flat plates resembling rose petals.

Where in the World Jordan

Jordan:

Did you know that one of the oldest capital cities in the world was once called Philadelphia?

Do you know where this is?

To say Amman in Jordan is an old city is an understatement. Excavations around Amman’s Citadel have turned up artefacts that suggest inhabits settled there as far back as 3500 BC.

Some of the oldest known references to the city, Rabbath-Ammon (Great City of the Ammonites), are in the Old Testament. It was King David’s Army that destroyed the city of Rabbath-Ammon (also in the Old Testament) leaving it in complete ruins and thus laying the groundwork for the renaming.

Fast forward several hundred years and the city was now under the rule of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (283-246 BC), king of Ptolemaic Egypt. It was during his reign that the city underwent a major reconstruction and thus in his honour was renamed Philadelphia!
Amman is the capital and largest city of Jordan. It is the residence of the king and the seat of government.

The city is built on rolling hills at the eastern boundary of the Ajlūn Mountains, on the small, partly perennial Wadi Ammān and its tributaries.

Where in the World Montenegro

blank

Montenegro:

Where is this spectacular bay situated?

The Bay of Kotor, Montenegro

Is located in the northern part of Montenegro, close to the border with Croatia and open to the Adriatic Sea.

The quarter-of-a-mile-wide Verige Strait is the gateway to the bay. It was narrow enough to act as protection against invaders during the bay’s history, with a string of fortified cities built inside the bay by the Venetians. But it’s also wide enough to let cruise ships through, which has opened up the Bay of Kotor to a new stream of visitors.

It is often called Europe’s most southernmost fjord. And it certainly looks like one, with towering peaks and a rocky coastline dotted with pretty waterside towns.

But both the water and the climate are more Mediterranean than Scandinavian. The bay’s not actually a fjord either, but rather a ria – a submerged river valley made up of four connected bays making up a butterfly shape which stretches inland from the coast.

But the scenery is as stunning as any ‘proper’ fjord, and when you add in bags of history and culture then you can see why Kotor has been made a UNESCO World Heritage site.

So if you’re visiting Montenegro, you must include the beautiful Bay of Kotor.

Did you know that Dubai held 220 records in 2019?

Amazing right?

There’s nothing they love more in Dubai & the UAE than setting a new world record!

In fact, so many world records are being set in the country that they’ve placed a full-time Guinness World Record judge in the UAE to handle the workload, after all, there’s a lot of scrutiny that needs to go into a world record.

The most astounding and obvious in Dubai, you can’t look past the Burj Khalifa, the largest man-made structure in the world.

Standing at an incredible 828m (2,716.5 feet), it is the world’s tallest building as well as holding the record as:
• Tallest freestanding structure in the world (to its very tip, with spire, 829.8m)
• The building with the highest number of stories in the world (163 floors)
• The highest outdoor observation deck in the world (Level 124&125 + Level 148)
• The highest restaurant in the world (At.Mosphere on level 123 – 441.3m high)
• The highest lounge in the world (Levels 152-154 – 585m)
• Tallest service elevator in the world (504m – 1,654 feet)
