TAP Air Portugal sees massive 526% increase in traffic between Europe and Brazil

August 11, 2022 –

TAP Air Portugal (TAP) experienced a massive 526% increase in customers carried between Europe and Brazil in the first six months of 2022, compared to the previous year.

TAP Air Portugal

The Portuguese flag carrier flew more than 640,000 customers on more than 3,100 flights, grabbing nearly a third (28%) of the whole market share of all customers flown between Europe and Brazil.

The new figures bolster the airline’s position as the leading carrier between Europe and Brazil.

During the first half of 2022 it operated 3,129 flights and was the third largest international airline in the number of take-offs, representing a huge increase of 130% compared to the same period in 2021.

This summer, TAP will operate 76 flights a week between Portugal and Brazil, the largest number of flights by a foreign airline flying to Brazil.

Ricardo Dinis, TAP Country Manager for the UK & Ireland, said: “Brazil is a core market for TAP and as the main international airline linking Europe and Brazil, we have matched the soaring customer demand with a significant boost in flights during the last six months.

“Portugal’s popularity as a gateway to Brazil continues to rise and our 86% capacity levels, compared to pre-pandemic flights, is an indication that TAP is increasing its market share.

“We are attracting more and more customers to fly to our extensive Brazilian destinations, many of which we are the only European carrier offering transatlantic connections.

“With a wide network of more than ninety destinations worldwide, the continued strengthening of TAP’s transatlantic frequencies is a strong sign of our continued recovery.”

TAP connects Europe to 11 cities in Brazil from its Lisbon hub, flying to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belém, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Fortaleza, Natal, Maceió, Porto Alegre, Recife and Salvador. The airline also connects Porto with São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
TAP Air Portugal is the flag carrier of Portugal, based at Lisbon Airport and serves over 90 destinations across three continent.

Established in 1945, the European carrier has been a member of Star Alliance since 2005 and offers customers seamless connections through their Lisbon hub to destinations around the world, thanks to their highly-popular Portugal stopover programme.

Currently, TAP connects Portugal with three destinations in the United Kingdom – London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Manchester – as well as offering flights to the Irish capital, Dublin.

The airline, which boasts one of the youngest fleets in Europe, currently operates a mix of short-haul and long-haul Airbus aircraft, from the state-of-the-art A330neo to the game changing single-aisle A321neoLR.

The carrier’s regional arm also operates a fleet of ATR and Embraer aircraft for those travelling a shorter distance.

Air India increases international flights to Canada

August 11, 2022 –

Air India will increase flights from Delhi to Vancouver, Canada, from three weekly to daily starting 31 August. The airline says the flight increase is a response to growing traffic between India and Canada, plus the return to service of the widebody Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft featuring a three-class configuration; first, business and economy.

Air India, following its acquisition by Tata Group, is now deploying aircraft that were grounded for prolonged periods due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other reasons.

“The progressive restoration of these aircraft allows Air India to increase schedule resilience and support frequency and network increases over the coming months,” the airline said.

“This increase in our frequency between Delhi and Vancouver is very welcome for many reasons. It is another sign of recovery from the pandemic and caters to strong customer demand. More importantly, it marks the first step in restoring Air India’s fleet and international network,” said Air India MD and CEO Campbell Wilson.

JetBlue Boston to London service

August 8, 2022 –

JetBlue has announced it has officially launched service from Boston’s Logan International Airport (BOS) to London’s Gatwick Airport (LGW). JetBlue’s daily nonstop service is part of the airline’s focus city strategy and its long-term transatlantic growth plans. London was the largest nonstop market not currently served by JetBlue from Boston and is among the most requested destinations from the airline’s large Boston customer base.

JetBlue Boston to London service

Last year, JetBlue launched its first-ever transatlantic service from New York-JFK to both Heathrow and Gatwick, London’s largest and busiest airports. The carrier plans to grow its transatlantic presence this year with new service from Boston Logan to London’s Heathrow Airport, launching September 20, 2022, and an additional Gatwick departure from New York starting October 29, 2022. Between JetBlue’s New York and Boston focus cities, the airline will offer five daily flights between the U.S. and the U.K. by October. JetBlue Boston to London service

“Our London service from New York has been an incredible success and we are thrilled to finally bring this highly anticipated service to our Boston customers, a route that has long suffered from high fares by legacy carriers,” said Robin Hayes, chief executive officer, JetBlue. “As Boston’s largest carrier, adding this nonstop service to Gatwick will only make us more relevant in our New England focus city and introduce JetBlue to a largely unserved market.”

“We are excited to welcome JetBlue’s first transatlantic service from Boston to London Gatwick,” said Massport CEO, Lisa Wieland. “We thank JetBlue for their continued partnership, and we look forward to the additional travel opportunities this will generate for our passengers.”

“We are thrilled that JetBlue is launching nonstop service between London and Boston. Visitors from the United Kingdom represent our top overseas source market,” said Martha Sheridan, Greater Boston CVB President & CEO. “Rebuilding this segment will be critical to the overall recovery of our visitor economy. We share many historical and cultural bonds with the UK and are so excited that JetBlue is investing in this route, which will surely be a great success!”

“We are delighted to welcome the launch of JetBlue’s new service between Boston and London. Demand for travel to the UK has returned to pre-pandemic levels, and the additional connectivity from Boston, a vital US market, will make it even easier for Americans looking to book their next trip over. As we head into the beautiful Autumn season, whether visitors are returning or discovering the UK for the first time, now is the perfect time to explore another side of Britain, filled with buzzing cities, exciting outdoor adventures, and iconic landmarks with a modern twist,” said Paul Gauger, VisitBritain’s Senior Vice President for the Americas.

Emirates restarts flights from London Stansted

August 2, 2022 –

Emirates restarts flights from London Stansted (STN) as it continues to rebuild its UK and global network in response to sustained demand for international travel. This is the first commercial flight Emirates has flown from Stansted since pausing operations from the airport in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

flights from London Stansted

The world’s largest international airline has advanced plans to increase capacity from five-weekly services to a daily flight, starting from today. With the return of services to Stansted, Emirates has ramped up its operations to London with nine daily flights, including six daily flights to Heathrow and a double daily flight to Gatwick*. The added services will meet market demand and offer customers more travel choices and enhanced connectivity this summer. Stansted will be served by Emirates’ wide-body Boeing 777-300ER aircraft fitted with its renowned ‘Game Changer’ First Class product.

Emirates has resumed operations with EK065 leaving Dubai at 08:50, arriving at London Stansted at 13:30 on Monday 1st August. EK068, an evening flight will then depart Stansted at 21:10 and arrive at Dubai International (DXB) on Tuesday 2nd August at 07:10 (all times are local).

Richard Jewsbury, Emirates Divisional Vice President in the UK, commented, “We are delighted to be recommencing services to and from Stansted today and offering passengers further connectivity during the popular summer holiday period. Bookings in the UK and London have continued to surge with the further easing of travel restrictions and as appetite for international travel grows stronger. Stansted is a key hub for Emirates in the East and Southeast of the UK as we continue to scale up travel following the pandemic. We look forward to welcoming more passengers on board our premium Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in the coming months.”

Steve Griffiths, London Stansted’s Managing Director, said: “The return of daily flights from London Stansted to Dubai with Emirates is fantastic news for the airport, and demonstrates the renewed confidence of airlines and passengers as we recover from the pandemic. The service proved to be extremely popular following its launch in 2018, so Emirates timely return is a huge boost to passengers in London and the East of England, offering not only a vital link between the two destinations but right across the globe thanks to the airline’s worldwide route network available via Dubai.”

110 UK flights a week and updates to Newcastle
In addition to resuming operations from Stansted, Emirates today announces that, from 30 October, its Newcastle service will revert to pre-COVID schedule to operate as EK035/036 in the morning (instead of EK033/034), improving connectivity and offer customers better travel options.

By October 2022, the airline will be serving the UK with 110 weekly flights, including: six times daily to London Heathrow; daily service to London Stansted; double daily A380 service to Gatwick; three times daily to Manchester, including a double daily A380 service (starting 1st October 2022); double daily service to Birmingham; five weekly flights to Newcastle; and a daily service to Glasgow.

Air Serbia Resumes Direct Belgrade-Nice Flights in 2024

Air Serbia to launch 12 new routes

Air Serbia to launch 12 new routes

Air Serbia to launch 12 new routes

August 1, 2022 – Air Serbia is preparing to expand its route network with around twelve new routes, some of which will be launched as early as this winter season, although the majority will be added next summer.

The carrier’s CEO, Jiri Marek, told “Aviation Week”, “We are currently planning around a dozen of new destinations for next year, as well as more frequencies in the region to guarantee connectivity to Chicago, New York and China. And some of the new destinations, even exotic ones, might come already in the winter season”.

Air Serbia to launch 12 new routes

Mr Marek noted that Air Serbia does not need additional destinations in Europe, but more frequencies, indicating that many of the upcoming new routes will be outside of the continent.

Air Serbia is planning a greater presence in the Middle East and North Africa, in addition to its planned new services to China and the United States. The Serbian carrier has been absent from the Middle East since March 2020, having discontinued flights to Beirut, and suspending operations to Cairo and Tel Aviv, as well as shelving plans to serve Amman in Jordan this summer.

However, the airline did operate regular charter services between the Serbian capital and Dubai during the Expo 2020 event from October 2021 until this March. According to OAG data, the busiest unserved destinations in the Middle East from Belgrade include Kuwait City, Tehran, Muscat, Baghdad, Amman and Bahrain.

Air Serbia to launch 12 new routes: Air Serbia has said it will grow its fleet with the addition of an Airbus A320 aircraft. Furthermore, due to high seasonality, the airline is looking to either make a capacity provider agreement on a long-term basis or attempt to enter into a Joint Venture agreement with reverse-seasonality operators in order to have wet-leased equipment available over the peak summer months. In addition, the company will add a further two ATR72-600s to its fleet by the end of the year and is believed to be considering more turboprops next year.

Air Serbia to launch 12 new routes: Air Serbia recently announced it would be hiring new cabin crew members for the “announced expansion of intercontinental, Euro-Mediterranean and regional destinations”.

Jet Airways to restart commercial operations from September

July 28, 2022 –

Jet Airways will start the process of hiring pilots for Airbus’ A320 aircraft, Boeing’s 737NG and 737Max planes as the airline is planning to resume its commercial operations in September. This comes after Jet Airways’ commercial operations were suspended on April 17, 2019, due to financial distress.

Jet Airways

“Good things come to those that wait – Jet Airways will be flying again soon! Inviting pilots who are current and type-rated on the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737NG or MAX aircraft, to apply to join us in creating history as we prepare to relaunch India’s classiest airline,” the airline wrote on its Twitter platform.

Notably, the ailing airline started the process for hiring pilots for Airbus’ A320 aircraft as well as Boeing’s 737NG and 737Max planes. The airline, which reportedly received air operator certificate from aviation regulator DGCA on May 20, is yet to place an order for aircraft with either European plane-maker Airbus or American aerospace company Boeing, according to news agency PTI report.

It is important to note that as of now, the ailing airline has just one operational aircraft, which is a B737NG, in its fleet. The airline has announced that it intends to recommence commercial operations in the current quarter ending September, the report said. Financial distress forced Jet Airways, which flew for more than two decades, to suspend operations on April 17, 2019 and a consortium of lenders, led by the State Bank of India (SBI), filed an insolvency petition in June 2019 to recover outstanding dues worth over ₹8,000 crore, the report further highlighted.

Ryanair strikes continues

July 28, 2022 – The Spanish Unions have called for a walk out that will last five months running from 8 August to 7 January 2023.

Spanish cabin crew union members plan strikes on four days of every week until January to press demands for higher pay and better working conditions, a leader of the USO union said on Wednesday.

More than 40 Ryanair flights were cancelled in mid-June due to strike action by the airline’s French crew. This was followed by coordinated walkouts in Spain, Belgium, Portugal and Italy. Now, the airline’s Spanish crew are striking in July.

“We are seeing a trickle of dismissals almost daily. Last week it was the tenth worker and yesterday another colleague from Barcelona who had been with the company for 12 years,” union sources say.

They are also calling for an end to disciplinary proceedings against almost 100 workers who took part in the stoppages.

Ryanair strikes

This new action will mainly affect the airports of Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona, Malaga, Alicante, Seville and Palma de Mallorca. Both national and international connections will be disrupted.

Rugby World Cup

Emirates extends Rugby World Cup partnership

Emirates Rugby World Cup

Emirates extends Rugby World Cup partnership

July 27, 2022 –

World Rugby and Emirates have announced an extension of the Dubai-based airline’s long-standing relationship as a Rugby World Cup Worldwide Partner.

Rugby World Cup

Under the agreement, the leading airline will continue as Worldwide Partner of Rugby World Cup 2023 in France and Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia.

Underscoring its commitment to the sport, Emirates is also extending its official sponsorship of the Emirates World Rugby Match Officials through to 2027, a relationship that has proven pivotal in the development and performance of elite match officials since 2013.

In joining the global family of Worldwide Partners for Rugby World Cup 2023 in France, Emirates will return to where the hugely successful relationship between the airline and the international federation began in 2007. Since then, the airline has become one of the sport’s most prominent and active supporters as a committed partner of every men’s Rugby World Cup since 2007 and proud sponsor of the Dubai and Cape Town rounds of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

As the Official Airline of Rugby World Cup France 2023 and Australia 2027, Emirates will fly rugby to new frontiers and bring its leading expertise in customer experience to help deliver a truly world-class tournament for fans travelling to the host nations. Its investment in the sport as a Worldwide Partner will help support rugby’s development in both emerging and established markets, while fans will be able to watch every moment from two unforgettable Rugby World Cups live and on-demand from their flight seats, making the sport more accessible.

Supporting rugby’s values and high-performance officiating

With Emirates’ support, World Rugby will continue to invest in the development and support of the world’s top match officials, central to the sport’s values of respect and discipline. The world’s best referees will take the field in their Emirates Fly Better Macron kit when officiating in test rugby, continuing a long tradition started back in 2013.

Following the success of the award-winning ‘Whistle Watch’, a World Rugby content series presented by former international referee Nigel Owens and sponsored by Emirates, the two partners will continue to create innovative content to immerse fans into the world of match officials and inspire young referees to pick up the whistle, while making rugby’s laws more accessible

World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont said: “We are delighted to announce the extension of our long-term and successful collaboration with Emirates for the next two men’s Rugby World Cups and in support of our men’s and women’s match officials programme. Emirates’ global network and passion for our sport will be key in our efforts to make rugby truly global and their proven excellence in customer experience will be an asset to take our fan services to the next level.”

World Rugby Chief Revenue and Fan Engagement Officer Richard Heaselgrave added: “Emirates has a global stature as a partner and that is incredibly prestigious for any tournament. For Rugby World Cup, we’ve had Emirates on board for more than a decade and we’re immensely proud to be partnering again for the next two pinnacle men’s tournaments.

“Emirates’ global operations in most major markets across the world helps us raise awareness of our sport and their belief in excellence is aligned with our own vision of staging world-class events. Emirates is right at the heart of creating events that people want to take part in, bringing fans closer to the action. We are in the business of days out and unforgettable memories. So are Emirates.”

Emirates Airline President, Sir Tim Clark, said: “Rugby is a sport with great values and a proud heritage in many countries. It is also a sport that’s attracting more participation and interest across communities each year as we are seeing in the UAE where rugby just made it into school programmes nationwide. We see rugby as a great platform to bring people together under a shared passion for the sport.

“Emirates has been a proud sponsor of Rugby World Cup since 2007. France 2023 also coincides with Emirates’ 30 years of flight operations to Paris, Charles de Gaulle and considering we now have 31 weekly flights to France, Emirates is looking forward to flying in fans to watch the world’s best teams competing for the Webb Ellis Cup.”

By renewing as a Worldwide Partner of Rugby World Cup, Emirates joins Societe Generale, Mastercard, Asahi, Capgemini and Jaguar Land Rover in the global family of Worldwide Partners for Rugby World Cup 2023. Emirates also becomes the fourth Global Partner of World Rugby, joining Capgemini, Macron and HSBC.

Lufthansa strike on July 27 – cancels almost all flights in Germany over planned strike today

Lufthansa strike

Lufthansa strike

July 27, 2022 – Lufthansa strike affects many passengers this week.

The strike announced by the trade union ver.di for Wednesday already ruined the travel plans of almost 7,500 passengers on Tuesday.

On the day before the actual strike, Lufthansa had to cancel a total of around 45 flights in Munich and Frankfurt.

Lufthansa strike long haul effect

For example, Lufthansa guests could not fly to Munich today as planned from the following cities: Bangkok, Singapore, Boston, Denver, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seoul (among many others).

A lot of passengers could also not board their flights to Frankfurt as planned. Connections from the following cities, among others, had to be canceled: Buenos Aires, Johannesburg, Miami or New-Delhi.

The long-haul flights were all almost fully booked.

This means that the strike is already affecting guests who would have normally landed in Munich or Frankfurt tomorrow.

Lufthansa is currently working flat out to restore the flight operation to normal in view of the upcoming start of the holidays in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
