Ryanair strikes continues

July 28, 2022 – The Spanish Unions have called for a walk out that will last five months running from 8 August to 7 January 2023.

Spanish cabin crew union members plan strikes on four days of every week until January to press demands for higher pay and better working conditions, a leader of the USO union said on Wednesday.

More than 40 Ryanair flights were cancelled in mid-June due to strike action by the airline’s French crew. This was followed by coordinated walkouts in Spain, Belgium, Portugal and Italy. Now, the airline’s Spanish crew are striking in July.

“We are seeing a trickle of dismissals almost daily. Last week it was the tenth worker and yesterday another colleague from Barcelona who had been with the company for 12 years,” union sources say.

They are also calling for an end to disciplinary proceedings against almost 100 workers who took part in the stoppages.

Ryanair strikes

This new action will mainly affect the airports of Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona, Malaga, Alicante, Seville and Palma de Mallorca. Both national and international connections will be disrupted.

Emirates extends Rugby World Cup partnership

Emirates Rugby World Cup

Emirates extends Rugby World Cup partnership

July 27, 2022 –

World Rugby and Emirates have announced an extension of the Dubai-based airline’s long-standing relationship as a Rugby World Cup Worldwide Partner.

Rugby World Cup

Under the agreement, the leading airline will continue as Worldwide Partner of Rugby World Cup 2023 in France and Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia.

Underscoring its commitment to the sport, Emirates is also extending its official sponsorship of the Emirates World Rugby Match Officials through to 2027, a relationship that has proven pivotal in the development and performance of elite match officials since 2013.

In joining the global family of Worldwide Partners for Rugby World Cup 2023 in France, Emirates will return to where the hugely successful relationship between the airline and the international federation began in 2007. Since then, the airline has become one of the sport’s most prominent and active supporters as a committed partner of every men’s Rugby World Cup since 2007 and proud sponsor of the Dubai and Cape Town rounds of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

As the Official Airline of Rugby World Cup France 2023 and Australia 2027, Emirates will fly rugby to new frontiers and bring its leading expertise in customer experience to help deliver a truly world-class tournament for fans travelling to the host nations. Its investment in the sport as a Worldwide Partner will help support rugby’s development in both emerging and established markets, while fans will be able to watch every moment from two unforgettable Rugby World Cups live and on-demand from their flight seats, making the sport more accessible.

Supporting rugby’s values and high-performance officiating

With Emirates’ support, World Rugby will continue to invest in the development and support of the world’s top match officials, central to the sport’s values of respect and discipline. The world’s best referees will take the field in their Emirates Fly Better Macron kit when officiating in test rugby, continuing a long tradition started back in 2013.

Following the success of the award-winning ‘Whistle Watch’, a World Rugby content series presented by former international referee Nigel Owens and sponsored by Emirates, the two partners will continue to create innovative content to immerse fans into the world of match officials and inspire young referees to pick up the whistle, while making rugby’s laws more accessible

World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont said: “We are delighted to announce the extension of our long-term and successful collaboration with Emirates for the next two men’s Rugby World Cups and in support of our men’s and women’s match officials programme. Emirates’ global network and passion for our sport will be key in our efforts to make rugby truly global and their proven excellence in customer experience will be an asset to take our fan services to the next level.”

World Rugby Chief Revenue and Fan Engagement Officer Richard Heaselgrave added: “Emirates has a global stature as a partner and that is incredibly prestigious for any tournament. For Rugby World Cup, we’ve had Emirates on board for more than a decade and we’re immensely proud to be partnering again for the next two pinnacle men’s tournaments.

“Emirates’ global operations in most major markets across the world helps us raise awareness of our sport and their belief in excellence is aligned with our own vision of staging world-class events. Emirates is right at the heart of creating events that people want to take part in, bringing fans closer to the action. We are in the business of days out and unforgettable memories. So are Emirates.”

Emirates Airline President, Sir Tim Clark, said: “Rugby is a sport with great values and a proud heritage in many countries. It is also a sport that’s attracting more participation and interest across communities each year as we are seeing in the UAE where rugby just made it into school programmes nationwide. We see rugby as a great platform to bring people together under a shared passion for the sport.

“Emirates has been a proud sponsor of Rugby World Cup since 2007. France 2023 also coincides with Emirates’ 30 years of flight operations to Paris, Charles de Gaulle and considering we now have 31 weekly flights to France, Emirates is looking forward to flying in fans to watch the world’s best teams competing for the Webb Ellis Cup.”

By renewing as a Worldwide Partner of Rugby World Cup, Emirates joins Societe Generale, Mastercard, Asahi, Capgemini and Jaguar Land Rover in the global family of Worldwide Partners for Rugby World Cup 2023. Emirates also becomes the fourth Global Partner of World Rugby, joining Capgemini, Macron and HSBC.

Lufthansa strike on July 27 – cancels almost all flights in Germany over planned strike today

Lufthansa strike

Lufthansa strike

July 27, 2022 – Lufthansa strike affects many passengers this week.

The strike announced by the trade union ver.di for Wednesday already ruined the travel plans of almost 7,500 passengers on Tuesday.

On the day before the actual strike, Lufthansa had to cancel a total of around 45 flights in Munich and Frankfurt.

Lufthansa strike long haul effect

For example, Lufthansa guests could not fly to Munich today as planned from the following cities: Bangkok, Singapore, Boston, Denver, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seoul (among many others).

A lot of passengers could also not board their flights to Frankfurt as planned. Connections from the following cities, among others, had to be canceled: Buenos Aires, Johannesburg, Miami or New-Delhi.

The long-haul flights were all almost fully booked.

This means that the strike is already affecting guests who would have normally landed in Munich or Frankfurt tomorrow.

Lufthansa is currently working flat out to restore the flight operation to normal in view of the upcoming start of the holidays in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, the ultra-low-fare national airline of the UAE, has announced it will launch two new routes from Abu Dhabi to the idyllic island paradise of the Maldives, and the airline’s fifth key destination in the Gulf, Kuwait. The new routes will offer travellers the opportunity to explore marvellous destinations in line with the airline’s ambition to provide tourists and residents in the UAE and the region with hassle-free, affordable travel options. Flights to Kuwait and Maldives

From October, Wizz Air will offer flights four times a week on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from Abu Dhabi to Male, the main international airport in the Maldives. Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is an unrivalled holiday destination, boasting white sandy beaches, spectacular sunsets and colourful reefs brimming with wildlife. For those yearning to discover what the islands have to offer, Wizz Air’s new route unlocks affordable travel options for those within the UAE and for self-connecting passengers travelling from Central and Eastern Europe via the Wizz Air network.

Flights to Kuwait, located in the North-Western corner of the Persian Gulf, will operate daily from Abu Dhabi, providing travellers with the opportunity to experience authentic Arab traditions and learn about its unique history over the years. Kuwait City is home to some of the top tourist attractions in Kuwait, such as the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Center, the Grand Mosque of Kuwait and Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Center. The city is also known for its Souq Al Mubarakiya, one of the country’s oldest markets, which offers an exotic sensory experience.

The new routes will see Wizz Air Abu Dhabi fly to a total of 34 destinations within a five-hour flight time radius of Abu Dhabi, since the airline launched in January 2021. The ease of COVID-19 restrictions and the removal of PCR test requirements for vaccinated travellers has made travel simpler again allowing for more spontaneous travel opportunities.

The airline has a young fleet composed of four brand new state-of-the-art Airbus A321neo aircraft, offering the lowest fuel burn, emissions and noise footprint. Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has the lowest environmental footprint among its competitors in the region, supporting the airline’s long-term commitment to sustainability.

Etihad Airways named airline ratings ‘Environmental Airline of the Year 2022’

AirAsia X

Etihad Airways named airline ratings ‘Environmental Airline of the Year 2022’

July 19, 2022 –

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, has been named ‘Environmental Airline of the Year 2022’ in the annual Airline Ratings awards. The ranking recognises Etihad’s industry-leading strategy to improve aviation sustainability for both the airline itself and the entire industry.

Environmental Airline

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change chose the UAE as host for COP 28 which will take place in 2023. Etihad’s achievement is fully aligned with Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s own commitment to work with the international community to accelerate global efforts to address climate change and environmental protection and create a more sustainable economic future.

The airline recently published the Etihad Airways Sustainability Report which Airline Ratings deemed as a benchmark for the industry, demonstrating the potential advancements to be made in sustainable aviation by a wide range of initiatives.

Tony Douglas, Group Chief Executive Officer, Etihad Aviation Group, said: “Our ambition to become a leader in aviation sustainability has taken us on a journey to reduce the impact of aviation on the environment, not just for Etihad, but for the entire industry.

“We continue to explore and test all possible ways to decarbonise – from research into sustainable aviation fuels and contrail avoidance to offsets and reforestation through the Etihad Mangroves. The Sustainability Report we published earlier this year is a culmination of our efforts demonstrating the work we have done and what we have learned so far and I would encourage everyone to read it.”

Etihad Airways

Etihad’s sustainability initiatives began with a focus on creating operational efficiencies. The airline quickly went on to unite industry leaders and build the most comprehensive, cross organisational aviation sustainability initiative ever undertaken. This umbrella programme, now in its third year, includes partnerships with Boeing, GE, Airbus and Rolls Royce, as well as a wide range of collaborations with pioneering new-technology organisations, academic researchers, smaller businesses and start-ups.

Etihad’s flagship sustainability programmes include the Greenliner programme using the airline’s fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners as flying test-beds, as well as the Sustainable50 A350-1000 launched earlier this year.

Mr Douglas continues: “We are grateful to our partners from the major manufacturers to academics and small start-ups who have partnered with us on this mission, in particular through the Greenliner and Sustainable50 programmes. And we’re appreciative of our guests and corporate clients who have signed up to our green loyalty programme Conscious Choices or played their part by bringing a little less luggage or choosing to offset their flights.

“This accolade is testament to our efforts over the past few years to be the greenest airline in the sky and we’re proud to be awarded the Environmental Airline of the Year 2022. We are tremendously proud of this achievement but will not rest on our laurels as we have ambitious, industry-changing and climate critical action to continue to build on.”

Airlineratings.com Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas said “Etihad Airways has shown its clear leadership in the push for sustainable flight with its Greenliner Boeing 787 programme and this year with its Sustainability50, A350 aircraft.

“At every touchpoint, Etihad Airways staff and management are committed to reducing the airline’s CO2 footprint and it shows. The mantra at Etihad Airways is a million things count in reducing emissions and thus the focus is all-consuming.”

Mr Thomas added that “the airline’s Sustainability Report 2020-2021 demonstrates the potential advancements to be made in sustainable aviation by a wide range of initiatives, coordinated to achieve a 20% reduction in emissions intensity in its passenger fleet by 2025, cut 2019 net emissions by 50% by 2035, and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.”

Over the past three years, the airline has conducted a vast number of research eco-flights demonstrating potential carbon emission savings of up to 72% on a single flight. Etihad has also tested and implemented world-first operational efficiencies and technology solutions including Jeppesen Flite Deck Advisor, SATAVIA contrail avoidance, GE Engine Foam Wash, eTech logs and lightweight Unit Load Devices

In addition to the airline’s comprehensive testing and innovation programme, Etihad became the first airline to secure commercial finance based on verified compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations (UN SDGs).

The Etihad Mangroves Forest project was launched with plans to establish carbon-absorbing forests in countries where the airline operates.

In an initiative to involve its guests and corporate clients, Etihad offers the Conscious Choices programme with rewards for customers who take environmentally positive action such as offsetting their flights. Corporate clients can benefit from accredited solutions to reduce their Scope 3 emissions.

AirAsia X Adds Australia And New Zealand Routes

July 19, 2022 –

The rebuild of the Malaysian medium- and long-haul LCC’s network is continuing with the restart of routes to Melbourne, Perth and Auckland.

AirAsia X

AirAsia X is adding service to Melbourne and Perth in Australia and returning to Auckland in New Zealand from Nov. 1, increasing the carrier’s network to 13 routes. The LCC served all three destinations from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) before the pandemic but is making some changes to the operations on its return. In the Melbourne market, the airline will resume flights to the city’s main international gateway Melbourne International (MEL), rather than flying to Avalon Airport (AVV). AirAsia X operated flights to MEL until late 2018 when it switched AVV, located about 50 km from Melbourne’s CBD.
The Auckland (AKL) route will also operate via Sydney (SYD), instead of being served nonstop.

All three routes—Kuala Lumpur-Perth (PER), Kuala Lumpur-Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur-Auckland via Sydney—will be served three times per week using Airbus A330-300s. However, AirAsia X said it plans to gradually increase frequencies to daily by the first quarter of 2023 to help meet “strong pent-up demand.”

“In 2019, we flew over a million guests to both countries, which shows that Australia and New Zealand are important markets for us, and we connected the same number of Australians and New Zealanders to Malaysia and across Asean,” AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said.

“As the world reopens and travel restrictions ease, we are confident these new services will prove popular.”

Melbourne Airport chief of aviation Jim Parashos welcomed the return of AirAsia X. He said: “With a significant network beyond Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia X provides a one-stop service into much of India and South East Asia, which is particularly valuable for international students or Victorians looking to visit friends and family overseas.

“AirAsia X’s decision to return to Melbourne Airport highlights the value travelers and airlines place on convenience as well as price.”

AirAsia X is currently flying two routes, serving Delhi (DEL) and Seoul Incheon (ICN) from KUL. However, further resumptions are planned over the coming weeks, including adding flights to Tokyo Haneda (HND) and Sydney. In June, the airline also said it hopes to return to the London market after a 10-year hiatus.

American Airlines flights to Cuba – flights approved to more cities in Cuba

American Airlines flights to Cuba

July 14, 2022 – American Airlines flights to Cuba – flights are approved to more cities in Cuba.

U.S. officials approved a request by American Airlines to resume flights to 5 destinations in Cuba that were stopped in 2019 when the previous government curtailed services between the two countries.

This means that American airlines will resume flights from Miami to Varadero, Holguin, Camaguey, Santa Clara and Santiago de Cuba.

American Airlines flights to Cuba

American said that starting in early November it will operate two daily flights to Santa Clara and one daily flight to each of the other airports.

American currently operates six flights a day between Miami and Havana. JetBlue and Southwest also fly to Havana.

The Trump administration, which wanted to starve Cuba’s regime of cash, suspended flights between the U.S. and destinations in Cuba other than Havana. Two months ago, under Biden, this decision was reversed and they announced it would loosen restrictions to the island.

Doha Melbourne flights

Qatar Airways to increase Doha Melbourne flights

Qatar Airways to increase Doha Melbourne flights

July 13, 2022 –

Qatar Airways will be increasing its Doha – Melbourne flights from the current once-daily schedule to double-daily flights from 1 October with the support of the Victorian Government. The airline and the Victorian Government signed a strategic agreement to increase connectivity to Melbourne to further boost trade and tourism.

Doha Melbourne flights

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: “Melbourne is the original home for Qatar Airways in Australia, and we are excited to enhance our operations there, as a testament to both strong demand and our deep commitment to Australia. We look forward to welcoming more passengers to experience our five-star hospitality, as travel to and from Melbourne to many cities worldwide via our Doha hub in Qatar. The launch of the additional daily flight to Melbourne ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ will allow more football fans travel to attend their respective matches.”

Minister for Industry Support and Recovery, Ben Carroll, said: “Backing international aviation supports our economy and we will continue to work with airlines like Qatar Airways to establish and expand routes into Melbourne to boost local jobs.”

Melbourne Airport Chief Executive Officer, Lorie Argus, said: “There is huge demand for international travel out of Melbourne, and these extra services couldn’t come at a better time with the soccer World Cup kicking off in November. It’s exciting to see airlines like Qatar Airways adding more capacity into Melbourne, given they are a global airline and could send their aircraft anywhere it’s a huge vote of confidence in our city. Qatar Airways is already a favourite with passengers heading to the Middle East or Europe, and given their partnerships with both Virgin Australia and Qantas, we expect these new flights will prove very popular.”

The additional Melbourne schedule includes an onward leg to Canberra, officially resuming a once-daily connection between Doha and Canberra starting 1 October. The added daily schedule will be operated by Boeing 777-300ER, featuring its award-winning QSuite Business Class. The airline will operate a total of 40 weekly flights to Australia with this network enhancement.

With the newest addition, the airline will operate to six destinations in Australia including Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth and Sydney. This will exceed Qatar Airways’ pre-pandemic footprint of five gateways in Australia, following the addition of Brisbane services started early 2020 during the global pandemic.

Qatar Airways has recently announced its strategic partnership with Virgin Australia, which will offer increased travel options and benefits across 35 destinations in its extensive domestic network, as well as to its recently relaunched short-haul international markets, including Fiji and Queenstown, New Zealand.

Qatar Airways has maintained its Australian services throughout the pandemic, whilst launching services to Brisbane in early 2020 to provide essential connectivity. It has carried over 330,000 passengers in and out of Australia during the pandemic between March 2020 to December 2021 via both commercial flights and special chartered services. Qatar Airways Cargo has also played a crucial part supporting Australia’s imports and exports industry during the pandemic, by being one of the very few global airlines that never stopped flying. Currently, Qatar Airways Cargo carries over 1,900 tonnes of cargo to and from Australia per week.

The national carrier of the State of Qatar continues to rebuild its network, which currently stands at over 150 destinations. With more frequencies being added to key hubs, Qatar Airways offers unrivalled connectivity to passengers, making it easy for them to connect to a destination of their choice.

A multiple award-winning airline, Qatar Airways was announced as the ‘Airline of the Year’ at the 2021 World Travel Awards., managed by the international air transport rating organisation, Skytrax. It was also named ‘World’s Best Business Class’, ‘World’s Best Business Class Airline Lounge’, ‘World’s Best Business Class Airline Seat’, ‘World’s Best Business Class Onboard Catering’ and ‘Best Airline in the Middle East’. The airline continues to stand alone at the top of the industry having won the main prize for an unprecedented sixth time (2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021).

British Airways cancels more flights – another 10,300 through to the end of October

British Airways cancels more flights

British Airways cancels more flights

July 12, 2022 – British Airways cancels more flights will heap even more misery on holidaymakers this summer as the airline announced it will cancel a further 10,300 flights through the end of October. The new tranche of cancellations is in addition to the thousands of flights that have already been axed by the embattled and disruption-prone airline.

British Airways cancels more flights

The latest wave of cancellations will only impact short-haul services and chief executive Sean Doyle says the intention is to consolidate quieter services on routes with multiple daily flights.

British Airways has now slashed its planned summer schedule by 13 per cent after struggling to recruit enough cabin crew and ground staff to actually make the schedule a reality. The airline has promised to rebook and reroute affected passengers on alternative airlines if a BA flight is unavailable.

The list of affected flights may not be finalised until Friday which is the deadline given by the government for a so-called ‘slot amnesty’. At congested airports like Heathrow, airlines operate flights within slots which give takeoff and landing rights.

Slots are expensive and highly sought after and an airline runs the risk of losing a slot if they don’t use it. But in order to reduce the risk of an airline trying to operate flights they have no chance of actually being able to run, the UK government has allowed carriers to temporary give up some slots until the end of the summer season.

Doyle told staffers on Wednesday that he hoped other airlines would draw down their schedules at Heathrow in order to reduce the pressure on the airport.

In the coming days, British Airways will consolidate the vast majority of its Heathrow flights out of Terminal 5 in a move that is designed to concentrate staff in the same building in order to better manage resources.

United Airlines launches direct service to Mallorca

July 07, 2022 –

Palma’s significant investment in repositioning itself as a major city break destination has generated an influx of tourism over the past decade as well as the recent launch of the first and only nonstop flight from the U.S. via United Airlines. Renowned and valued as Europe’s reference point for beach tourism, the capital of Spain’s Balearic Islands is garnering even more attention for being a lively cosmopolitan city that makes an attractive destination all year round thanks to its wide range of cultural, gastronomic, sporting and leisure options.

direct service to Mallorca

With a flourishing foodie scene, a bustling waterfront, and one of the world’s most awe-inspiring cathedrals, Palma is an utterly compelling destination. Dating back to the 13th century, Palma has a rich Gothic history, and many of the city’s buildings maintain their original baroque influence. Honey-colored stone and medieval streets makes for an incredibly unique look for a beach city. Despite being a historic town, Palma has a modern soul, with an endless list of modern culture, entertainment and gastronomy.  Coves, beaches, coastal cliffs and mountain ranges make up the island’s landscape. Inland you will find vibrant towns, top restaurants and bars, contemporary galleries, luxury shopping boutiques, bustling fresh food markets, looming baroque churches, and teeming public squares.

On June 2, United Airlines inaugurated its service between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) with three weekly flights on Boeing 767-300 planes with capacity for 204 passengers. According to Anna aero, New York was one of Palma’s most underserved destinations without nonstop flights. In 2019 a total of 29,380 of passengers flew indirectly to the Balearic Island. The new seasonal route allows seamless and direct travel for American tourists.

“It gives us immense pleasure to announce that we are directly connected to the U.S. via Newark, as it opens our doors for travelers looking to explore all Palma has to offer,” said Pedro Homar, Director of Palma Tourism Board. “Palma being named the newest destination for United is further testament to our region’s popularity, influence and relevance to Americans. We look forward to showcasing the Balearic Islands and are committed to ensuring this new partnership is an unrivaled success.”

Palma is the biggest city in Spain’s Balearic Island archipelago, which also includes fantastic destinations like Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera. As the capital, Palma is a city of modern, hotel chains such as Melia, Iberostar, HM, Riu, and Marriott. In 2023, Palma and Mallorca will welcome the second Four Seasons to open in Spain as well as a Mandarin Oriental.

Finnair to unveil Helsinki Mumbai flights from August 2022

July 07, 2022 –

Finnair will finally be starting non-stop flights between Mumbai and Helsinki next month. Finland’s flag carrier, which started flying to Delhi from 2006 and currently has a daily on this route, had briefly launched Mumbai flights in 2008. But the global economic meltdown forced the airline to suspend the same soon after launch.

Helsinki Mumbai flights

The Mumbai service will now start as a thrice weekly — ironically during yet another global economic downturn— and go up to four times a week from this November.

“India is the number one growth market of Asia at the moment. We are looking at other cities in the country. Personally, I will be happy to see four destinations here in the next two years,” Sakari Romu, Finnair GM, India, of commercial division.

Finnair will operate its Airbus A330 between Mumbai and Helsinki on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

Finnair connects customers to nearly 70 destinations in Europe and five destinations in the US — Seattle, New York, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles.

Speaking about the Mumbai launch, Finnair GM Desmond Chacko said: “As the world opens up to travel, it is an opportune time to expand operations and enable better connectivity for our customers. After Delhi, Mumbai is a major airline hub in India and is home to leading global businesses. Our new services will enable both business & leisure travel from the region as global economies gradually recover from the impact of the Covid-19.”

SAS files for bankruptcy

SAS files for bankruptcy protection after being hit by pilot strikes

SAS files for bankruptcy

SAS files for bankruptcy protection after being hit by pilot strikes

July 06, 2022 –

The Scandinavian airline, SAS, announced that it has gone bankrupt a day after 1,000 pilots walked out on strike.

SAS files for bankruptcy

On Tuesday, the airline voluntarily filed for ‘Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings’ in the United States as part of a restructuring plan.

The move will allow the carrier to continue operating, despite facing financial problems.

In the US, Chapter 11 is a mechanism allowing a company to restructure its debts under court supervision. SAS said its “operations and flight schedule are unaffected by the Chapter 11 filing, and SAS will continue to serve its customers as normal.”

However, it acknowledged that the strike launched on Monday by Scandinavian pilot unions would continue to impact operations.

“The ongoing strike has made an already challenging situation even tougher. The Chapter 11 process gives us legal tools to accelerate our transformation, while being able to continue to operate the business as usual,” chief executive Anko van der Werff said in a statement.

Pilots walked out on Monday after negotiations between the unions and the company broke down.

The strike is estimated to lead to the cancellation of approximately 50% of all SAS flights, impacting around 30,000 passengers a day.
The pilots are protesting against salary cuts demanded by management as part of a restructuring plan aimed at ensuring the survival of the company, which has suffered a string of losses since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020.

On Monday, SAS said that the strike “is estimated to lead to the cancellation of approximately 50 per cent of all scheduled SAS flights,” impacting around 30,000 passengers a day.

Which countries have a stake in SAS?
SAS management announced a savings plan in February, dubbed “SAS Forward”, which was supplemented in June by a plan to increase capital by nearly €1 billion. Denmark and Sweden are the biggest shareholders with 21.8 per cent each.

Denmark has said it is ready to increase its stake to 30 per cent. Sweden has refused to provide fresh funds, but is willing to turn debt into capital.

Norway, which left SAS in 2018, stated that it is ready to return to the airline, but only by converting debt into equity.

The strike at SAS comes as the summer is shaping up to be difficult for European airlines and airports, faced with staff shortages and causing queues, disruption and delays.

After widespread job losses linked to COVID-19, airlines and airports are struggling to recruit new staff in many countries.

Eastern Airways

Eastern Airways increases capacity to key domestic route

Eastern Airways

Eastern Airways increases capacity to key domestic route

July 05, 2022 –

Eastern Airways, the UK’s regional airline, based at Humberside Airport, have increased capacity on one of their main routes from London Gatwick to Cornwall Newquay Airport over the busy summer holiday period.

Eastern Airways

Eastern Airways currently offers a popular twice daily service, but have now added a third rotation on Monday, Thursday and Friday due to demand.

A recent study undertaken by Eastern Airways show that the Cornwall Airport Newquay – London Gatwick route is used by almost 60% of passengers for either leisure or visiting friends and family purposes.

Rising costs for holidaying abroad have meant that the staycation market is still very strong in the UK and these additional services are in place to give more options for travel to Cornwall but also for those travelling to the capital.

Roger Hage, General Manager of Eastern Airways has commented “As we hit the peak summer school period, increasing connectivity for those using this already popular service is key for Eastern Airways. The introduction of the mid-day service now provides a greater range of options for individuals, couples and families that are relying on this time efficient service.”

The introduction of the mid-day flights now allow for additional travel options for those using the service for business, leisure, visiting friends and family and onward travel.

The journey with Eastern Airways between London Gatwick and Cornwall Airport Newquay currently operates on a 75-minute flight on one of our comfortable ATR72-600 aircraft. Comparable journeys are a minimum of 5 hours by car and 7 hours by rail. Prices start from just £44.99 per person, including taxes, charges and baggage allowance. Passengers can save further time at the airport with Eastern Airways’ online check in service and even select their preferred seats in advance.

All of Eastern Airways’ services give passengers a generous baggage allowance, with a minimum of 10kg of cabin baggage and 15kg of hold baggage included as standard. For those passengers needing more, there are plenty of options for additional weight available to book before travelling as well as room for those summer essentials such as surfboards and golf clubs (subject to availability).

For the full summer schedule and to check availability, please visit www.easternairways.com

Eastern Airways also offer several other key domestic routes this summer including; Southampton – Belfast, Southampton – Dublin, Manchester – Southampton, Humberside – Aberdeen, Aberdeen – Wick John O’Groats, Humberside – Cornwall Airport Newquay and Jersey direct from both Humberside and Teesside.
