Not sure if there are beautiful dunes in the country you live in, there is even one in France! But did you know that the highest sand dune in the world is 1234 meters high?
 
Can you imagine going sandboarding on it?
 
Amazing, right?
 
It is indeed in Argentina.
 
A sand dune is, more or less, a giant lump of sand. Like a mountain… but sand. That’s it. A sand tune is literally any huge mound or hill of sand. They are formed from large masses of sand blown by the wind, and are most common in deserts, but also often appear near beaches.
 
When sand is blown by the wind into a sheltered area, behind an obstacle, where it then becomes sheltered from that wind, the sand accumulates and forms a dune. They can make for quite a miraculous sight – and real adventure playground. Think hiking, fat biking or sandboarding.
 
The highest sand dune in the world is named after Federico B. Kirbus, the journalist who discovered it. As well as spanning 1230m from base to peak, it also reaches 2845m above sea level. The dune sits in front of beautiful mountain views.
 
The Federico Kirbus dune is a dune located near the town of Tatón , in the Bolson de Fiambalá , in the department of Tinogasta in the province of Catamarca , in the northwest of the Argentine Republic.

And that ancient Wonder is the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.
 
The original list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World comes from a work by Philo of Byzantium written in 225 B.C. called On The Seven Wonders.
The Great Pyramid, located at Giza on the west bank of the Nile River north of Cairo in Egypt, is the only wonder of the ancient world that has survived to the present day. It is part of a group of three pyramids–Khufu (Cheops), Khafra (Chephren) and Menkaura (Mycerimus)–that were built between 2700 B.C. and 2500 B.C. as royal tombs.
 
The largest and most impressive is Khufu, known as “The Great Pyramid,” which covers 13 acres and is believed to contain more than 2 million stone blocks that weigh from two to 30 tons each.
 
For more than 4,000 years, Khufu reigned as the tallest building in the world. In fact, it took modern man until the 19th century to build a taller structure. Amazingly, the nearly symmetrical Egyptian pyramids were built without the aid of modern tools or surveying equipment.

Did you know that there is a museum in the world where it would take 11 years to view their collection? Not only that, the museum houses 50 cats that are, according to the director, as popular as Rembrandt. They have their own dedicated press officer and a dedicated kitchen. The museum also hires three full-time volunteers to look after them.

It is indeed the Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia.
 
John is right, there have been cats in the palace since Peter the Great’s daughter, Empress Elizabeth, issued a decree, in 1745, that the biggest cats, capable of catching mice, be sent immediately from Kazan to the court of her imperial majesty. Catherine the Great is thought to have favored Russian Blues as indoor palace cats.
 
The cats of the Hermitage live in a large cellar of almost 20 km long. It is well-equipped for comfortable living and hunting of the animals. Nothing limits the cats, they can free walk around, but not in the exposition halls. In the summertime, they prefer staying in the museum’s yard, enjoying the sun and not being bothered by the museum staff and guests
As the director of the state museum in Saint Petersburg says, the cats are even as popular as Rembrandt. Every cat has its own passport and a vet book.

Did you know that one of the most famous paintings in the world is not found in a museum, but in a convent? The painting inspired some wild theories and several books and films. And it is missing a piece, because in 1652 a doorway was added to the wall it was painted on.

It is indeed in Milan, Italy.
 
Although The Last Supper is easily one of the world’s most iconic paintings, its permanent home is a convent in Milan, Italy. And moving it would be tricky, to say the least. Leonardo da Vinci painted the religious work directly (and fittingly) on the dining hall wall of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie back in 1495.
 
In The Templar Revelation, Lynn Picknett and Clive Prince propose that the figure to the left of Jesus is not John, but Mary Magdalene, and that The Last Supper is key evidence in a cover-up of the true identity of Christ by the Roman Catholic Church.
 
Musicians have speculated that the true hidden message in The Last Supper is actually an accompanying soundtrack. In 2007, Italian musician Giovanni Maria Pala created 40 seconds of a somber song using notes supposedly encoded within da Vinci’s distinctive composition.
 
Three years later, Vatican researcher Sabrina Sforza Galitzia translated the painting’s “mathematical and astrological” signs into a message from Leonardo da Vinci about the end of the world. She claims The Last Supper predicts an apocalyptic flood that will sweep the globe from March 21 to November 1, 4006.

Did you know that there is a famous painting in the world that receives love letters daily? The painting has its own room and its own mailbox.

It is the Mona Lisa! Not only does the Mona Lisa receive love letters, there are also some other interesting facts:

She has her own room in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

After the Louvre launched a four-year, $6.3 million renovation in 2003, the painting now has its own room. A glass ceiling lets in natural light, a shatter-proof glass display case maintains a controlled temperature of 43 degrees F. and a little spotlight brings out the true colors of da Vinci’s original paints.

4. It is a painting but not a canvas.
Da Vinci’s famous masterpiece is painted on a poplar plank. Considering he was accustomed to painting larger works on wet plaster, a wood plank does not seem that outlandish. Canvas was available to artists since the 14th century, but many Renaissance masters preferred wood as a basis for their small artworks.

5. Jackie Kennedy invited her to visit.
Over the centuries, French officials have only rarely let the painting out of their sight. However, when first lady Jackie Kennedy asked if the painting could visit the U.S., French President de Gaulle agreed. “Mona Lisa” went on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and then at the Metropolitan Museum of the Arts in New York City.

6. A thief made her famous.
Although in the art world, the painting had always been an acknowledged masterpiece, it wasn’t until it was stolen in the summer of 1911 that it would capture the attention of the general public. Newspapers spread the story of the crime worldwide. When the painting finally returned to the Louvre two years later, practically the whole world was cheering.

7. Picasso was under suspicion for the theft. During the investigation, the gendarmes went so far as to question known art dissidents such as Pablo Picasso about the theft. They briefly arrested poet Guillaume Apollinaire, who had once said the painting should be burned. Their suspicions proved to be unfounded.

Amazing, right?

The tradition has existed ever since tourism began on the islands in the 1960s and for over 200 years before. English whalers and seamen travelling through the bay would leave letters to family, then those travelling in the opposite direction would deliver them back in England.

And it is Galapagos where we find this post office.

Did you know that there is a Champagne pool in the world? Don’t get too excited, it is named that way because it bubbles like champagne in a glass. But it is pretty special anyway: it has bubbles of colored water and coughing, spitting mud pools and not only that, its excess water feeds another pool called Artist’s Palette, which is colored yellow because of sulphur deposits. Amazing right?
Champagne Pool is a hot spring located within the Waiotapu geothermal area in North Island of New Zealand. The name Champagne Pool is derived from the constant efflux of carbon dioxide gas, similar to a glass of bubbling champagne. The vibrant colours come from a rich deposition of minerals and silicate. The silicate structures around the edge of the pool are teeming with microbial lives.
The hot spring was formed some 900 years ago by a hydrothermal eruption, resulting in a crater 62 m deep and 65 m in diameter. Coloured water percolates up from underground, full of carbon dioxide, which forms bubbles near the surface where the water temperature is 74°C. At the edges of the pool, silica is lined with bright orange from antimony rich deposits that solidify out of the cooler water. Mercury, thallium, gold and silver are also deposited in the rocks.
Named as “One of the 20 Most Surreal Places in the World” Thousands of years in the making, visitors can choose one or all of three walks which take between 45 and 90 minutes.
Unique features include the world famous Champagne Pool naturally coloured springs, bubbling mud, steaming ground, expansive vistas, huge volcanic craters and sinter terrace formations.
The natural bush setting adds another dimension to the experience as does the Lady Knox Geyser which erupts daily at 10.15 am to heights of up to 20 meters.

Under normal circumstances, falling asleep during a paid tour is a waste of money at best or an offense to your guide at worst. But that’s not the case with this new experience coming out of Hong Kong. As its name suggests, the Sleeping Bus Tour is designed to help passengers catch some Zs, and rides are already selling out.

“When we were brainstorming new tours, I saw a social media post from my friend saying that he was stressed out by his work, he couldn’t sleep at night,” said Kenneth Kong, the marketing and business development manager of ulu travel, the company behind this new concept.
 
“But when he was traveling on the bus, he was able to sleep well. His post inspired us to create this tour that lets passengers just sleep on the bus,” Kong told the Associated Press.

The five-hour bus ride takes passengers on an 83-kilometer (about 51.5 miles) journey aboard a regular double decker bus. Not only is the Sleeping Bus Tour the first of its kind, it’s also the longest bus route in Hong Kong, ensuring that fatigued passengers have plenty of time to enjoy some REM sleep.

The entire experience starts at a restaurant, where guests will be served a “2-course Western menu” or what the company describes as a “Food Coma Lunch” — an excellent head start in making passengers feel sleepy. Once they board the bus, passengers can get cozy for the ride, which includes a few stops for scenic photo ops and bathroom breaks. Passengers can also disembark the bus early at one of several drop-off points if they’d prefer to continue their sleep at home rather than complete the entire journey.

“I have been suffering from insomnia so I am here to try and get some sleep,” 25-year-old Anson Kong told the Associated Press. He was one of the passengers on the first bus tour, which completely sold out and took place on Oct. 16.

He said that the tour was a good idea and “more interesting” than he expected.

Tickets for the Sleeping Bus Tour are divided in four categories from the “Zero-decibel Sleeping Cabin” to the “VIP Panorama Cabin.” Prices range from about $17 USD to $115 USD per person.

Valencia, Spain Named European Capital of Smart Tourism 2022

Valencia, Spain has been named European Capital of Smart Tourism 2022. The city’s candidacy has been chosen by a jury of the European Commission, specializing in accessibility, sustainability, digitization, cultural heritage and creativity. Valencia’s commitment to developing projects that promote smart tourism; networking and promoting the development of innovative, sustainable, and inclusive tourism, were recognized and cemented the jury’s decision.

A total of 30 applications from 16 different countries submitted initiatives, including Bordeaux (France), Copenhagen (Denmark), Dublin (Ireland), Florence (Italy) and Palma (Spain).

The councilor for tourism of the Valencia City Council, Emiliano Garcia, said in a press statement that this distinction from the E.U. “represents recognition of the work on sustainability that the Valencia destination is developing, together with the business sector.”

“Valencia is positioning itself as a cosmopolitan, intelligent and sustainable tourist destination, at the level of large tourist cities and European capitals,” he added. “We are leading pioneering projects in terms of sustainability, such as the one relating to the calculation, certification and reduction of carbon and water footprints, or the development of a complete Tourist Intelligence System. We are positioning ourselves as a destination for international filming thanks to the constitution of the Film Office; we are the World Design Capital for 2022, and in parallel, we continue to maximize the value and visibility of our most traditional heritage, both tangible and intangible.”

Supported by a panel of experts in communication and brand development, Valencia will produce a promotional video, a large sculpture, including a hashtag that will be installed in a prominent place in the city and various promotional activities within the European Union to support visibility and awareness of the award in 2022. 

Commitment to Sustainability

Valencia has developed its tourism strategy on the pillar of sustainability, promoting projects that allow progress and meet the DMOs sustainable development goals. Among these projects and taking into consideration the city’s economic, social, and environmental impact is the recent audit of its carbon and water footprint of tourism activity. Through the reduction and compensation of tourism related activities, Valencia aims to be carbon-neutral by 2025.

Increased Accessibility 

Significant efforts have been made to increase the space dedicated to pedestrians. Showcasing Valencia’s commitment to mobility, more than 95 miles of bike lanes have been created in the city, the promotion of facilities with special equipment has increased, architectural barriers have been eliminated and multiple projects have been developed to adapt the tourist offer to ensure those with reduced mobility can enjoy everything the city has to offer. 

Tech Improving the Tourist Experience

Aimed at easing the decision-making process in the business sector, communication tools such as tourist chatbots, smart tourist information kiosks—which help travelers 24 hours a day, seven days a week—as well as geocaching experiences to discover the city’s attractions are some examples of the digital advances Valencia has taken to connect with visitors via tech. 

Preservation of History 

A city full of cultural heritage, historical character, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Valencia is committed to the preservation of its key tourism offerings and attractions. In addition to the journey to declare paella as Intangible Heritage of Humanity, the candidacy also highlighted other international recognitions—such as the 2022 World Design Capital award—as well as the synergies created between the cultural, creative and tourism industries.

At NYC’s tallest observation deck, visitors will soon be able to scale the outside of the building

The highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere is now allowing its visitors to scale the 1,131-foot skyscraper.

Today, New York City’s Edge at Hudson Yards announced that tickets would go on sale for City Climb, the highest external building climb in the world.

Opening on November 9, climbers can scale the outside of the Edge building and lean over the outdoor platform at the top.

Climbers will be fitted with specially designed safety harnesses secured by City Climb guides via two cables attached to a trolley. They will be able to lean out over the observation platform after arriving at The Apex, which stands at 1,271-feet.

Participants can also enjoy a view of Edge’s outdoor area on the 100th floor, which includes a champagne bar.

“The architectural details in New York City’s buildings make our skyline one of the most instantly recognizable in the world,” said Senior Vice President of Related Companies Michael Gilbane in Hudson Yards’ in an official press release obtained by PR Newswire. 

“But until now, the views from these iconic capstones have been reserved for cinematic superheroes,” Gilbane continued.

“We are exceedingly proud of the team who master-minded this entertainment marvel offering the world an unparalleled perspective of the City,” Gilbane concluded in the release.

New guests will also get a customized video of their climb and a commemorative medal.

It is indeed the Post Office Bay on Floreana Island in the Galapagos.
 
The Galápagos are better known for their sea lions and penguins than postal service. But the island of Floreana operates a unique stampless system of sending mail from one of the world’s most diverse, uninhabited areas.
 
Long before ecotourists annexed the remote islands off Ecuador’s coast, it was a pit stop for 18th-century whalers traversing the oceans. After months, or even years, on the job, the homesick seamen came up with an ingenious system of getting letters to their families. They erected a barrel on Floreana Island and left their mail for sailors on passing ships to deliver.
 
The first mention of the post office appears in the Journal of a Cruise, Captain David Porter’s account of his 1813 trip to the Galápagos, according to a timeline crafted by John Woram, author of Charles Darwin Slept Here. In his book, Porter recalls a crew member returning with papers “taken from a box which he found nailed to a pot, over which was a black sign, on which was painted Hathaway’s Postoffice.”
 
Twenty-five years later, another explorer documented the practice of bottling notes and leaving them to be taken back to America by fishing vessels. Those same fishermen “would never fail, before their departure, to touch at this island to take on a supply of tortoises.” The consumption of giant sea tortoises during this period is one of the reasons why Charles Darwin found none left on Floreana Island when he arrived in 1835. Rather sad, that!
 
 

Singapore Airline Just Unveiled an Exclusive New In-flight Wellness Program — With Help From a Top Spa Resort

When guests enter Golden Door, the San Marcos, California spa resort known worldwide for its “life-changing” wellness programming, the first scene they’ll encounter is a long wooden bridge under a canopy of leaves that runs straight and then makes a sharp left turn.

Guests are told that when they turn that corner, they’re leaving the stressors of the outside world behind.

Now, Singapore Airlines is working with Golden Door’s experts in mental and physical health to give travelers that same feeling as they board a plane and turn down the aisle to settle in for a long-haul flight.
 
The new Singapore Airlines partnership with Golden Door, announced Tuesday morning, includes new menus, in-flight exercises, and sleep education, and will launch on Los Angeles-to-Singapore (SQ37) flights in January before expanding to nonstop flights to Singapore from San Francisco, New York JFK, and Seattle.
 
But how do you take the magic cultivated across 600 acres of Southern California avocado and citrus groves, hiking trails, Japanese-inspired gardens, and biodynamic farmland, and translate it to a 50-square-foot first class suite 36,000 feet in the air?
 
The answer is multifaceted and requires experimentation between chefs, nutritionists, and personal trainers — but at the end of the day, it comes down to one simple concept: teaching passengers how to pause.
 
“You have the right to pause,” Kathy Van Ness, general manager and COO of Golden Door, said. “And that right will help you live longer.” Guests at Golden Door are there to take time out of their busy lives to care for their bodies and minds. And on a 17-hour-plus flight, travelers are afforded a similar opportunity to use a time out in their favor.
 
“We build our programs around the world’s longest flights… to have that time to dig into the content that Golden Door is creating,” Betty Wong, SIA’s divisional vice president of in-flight services and design, said.
 
 
 
 
 

While Frey grows his own ingredients in his fragrant on-site gardens, Singapore Airlines’ innovative use of aeroponic farming should leave little to be desired in the vegetable department. Using detoxifying combinations and anti-inflammatory ingredients such as turmeric, verbena, mint, and olive oil, the new wellness dishes are designed to satisfy but also pack in nutrients, helping ease the body into a long journey and new time zone.

Sample dishes include citrus grilled shrimp salad with honey-glazed mushrooms, blackberries, sourdough croutons, and balsamic ginger dressing as an appetizer; portobello meatballs and risotto with heirloom tomato sauce and wilted greens (a personal favorite) as a main course; oatmeal with goji berries, blueberries, quinoa, almonds, and honey drizzle for breakfast; and vegan coconut ice cream with mango for dessert.
 
At Golden Door, dinner is the main event that gets all 40 guests — mothers and daughters, CEOs and city dwellers, often times movie stars and media moguls — to gather together each day. On flights to Singapore, especially amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the social scene won’t be the same. Van Ness and her team are hopeful, however, that the feeling of rejuvenation upon departure will be.
 
“Our goal,” she said, “is to affect every single person inside that plane in a positive way.”

Moon Resorts Las Vegas is one of four lunar-themed properties planned to open around the world.

Space tourism is slowly becoming a reality with billionaires making seemingly regular visits to the stars and the world’s first space hotel planned to make its debut in 2027. Despite the promising progress, it may take a while before space tourism is available at a more accessible price point.

So what’s the next best thing in the meantime? Perhaps this new moon-shaped hotel coming to the Las Vegas Strip.

Canadian-based company Moon World Resorts Inc. has announced plans for a $5 billion, 5.5-million-square-foot hotel whose signature feature will be a replica of the moon standing at 735 feet tall and 650 feet wide.
 
The replica will only be 1/75,000 the size of the moon, but that’s large enough to accommodate 4,000 guest rooms and suites. Plans for Moon Resorts Las Vegas also include a 75,000-square-foot spa, 50,000-square-feet of food and beverage offerings, 75,000-square-feet of retail, and 150,00-square-feet of clubs and lounges.
 

For entertainment, guests can look forward to a 2,500-seat theater, a planetarium, a 5,000-seat event center, a 10,000-seat arena, and, of course, a casino. Adding to the moon-theme will also be a nightclub that will be positioned directly under a “spaceship” and will beam lights down on guests, the Daily Mail reported.

However, the main highlight of the property will be the “active lunar colony.” The colony, which will be in the upper half of the sphere, will “precisely mimic those [lunar colonies] now under serious active planning by Nasa, ESA, and many others.” And for $500, visitors can spend 90 minutes exploring the 10-acre space, using a “moon buggy” to pass over the craters.

Even just accessing this main attraction will be an adventure, with guests riding a rollercoaster-like “moon shuttle” that circles the exterior of the hotel suites on its way up to the lunar colony.

“People want something unique, something different, something ‘Wow,'” Michael Henderson, co-founder of Moon World Resorts, Inc., told The New York Post. “Space flights cost $200,000 to $250,000 — so the masses just can’t participate. With Moon [World Resorts], for $500, they can walk on an authentic lunar surface and enjoy exploring a lunar colony in a spectacular way.”

Moon Resorts Las Vegas will take about four years to build and is one of four lunar-themed properties planned to open around the world in 2026 or 2027. Beyond this Las Vegas property, others are planned for the Middle East, China, and Spain.

While some travelers visit warm-weather destinations for their winter vacations, lounging in the sun and enjoying a break from chilly temperatures back home, others head straight for freezing locales to embrace the picturesque, snowy landscapes. Across North America and northern Europe, ice hotels provide the ultimate winter wonderland experience, with one-of-a-kind accommodations in stunning, remote places, like Swedish Lapland or Romania’s Carpathian Mountains. Although amenities, on-site activities, and room types vary by location, ice hotels generally have a few things in common. The hotels made of ice and snow are typically rebuilt every year during the winter, open for a limited season while weather permits. And don’t worry — even though some offer beds made of ice, guests usually sleep on top of a mattress or in sleeping bags, so they don’t shiver all night.

Here are five stunning ice hotels located in Canada, Sweden, Norway, Romania, and Finland. 

1. Hotel de Glâce, Canada

This French Canadian palace located outside Quebec City is perhaps one of the best-known ice hotels in the world, and it’s the only hotel made of ice in North America. Opened in 2001, the resort changes its structure each year, offering 21 rooms and themed suites that come with arctic sleeping bags.  

Exact opening dates change every year — in 2021, the ice hotel is open from Jan. 2 to March 13.

2. Icehotel, Sweden

Located 125 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland, Icehotel is situated in the tiny town of Jukkasjärvi. This retreat is made for the rugged traveler, and it’s open all year long. Icehotel Winter is rebuilt each year, offering ice rooms from December through April, while Icehotel 365 has ice rooms available year-round. 

The cold rooms are kept at below-freezing temperatures to keep the ice bed frames intact. Guests staying in most rooms need to charge electronics and use the restroom at separate facilities (Deluxe Suites at Icehotel 365 are the exception with their own, warm en suite bathrooms). The hotel offers wilderness excursions, as well as a host of other services for travelers looking to embrace the quiet life of a Swedish village.

3. Snowhotel Kirkenes, Norway

Located in northern Norway, Snowhotel Kirkenes is open 365 days a year. There are 14 rooms available — seven double rooms and seven family rooms with four beds.  In the winter, available excursions include king crab winter safaris and northern lights tours, while summer guests can opt to hike with huskies or fish in the Barents Sea. 

4. Hotel of Ice, Romania

The Carpathian Mountains surround this high-altitude resort near the glacial Bâlea Lake. The hotel has been built from ice and snow every year since 2005, with double rooms and igloos available for travelers seeking a unique experience. The Ice Restaurant & Bar serves local dishes in a chilly setting — starters and desserts are even served on ice. 

5. SnowCastle Resort, Finland

Located in Kemi in Finnish Lapland, SnowCastle Resort is open 365 days a year, but the SnowHotel is only open during the winter. Due to the pandemic, SnowHotel won’t reopen until 2022, but visitors can still check out ice sculptures and the ice bar at SnowExperience365. This year, guests can opt for a winter stay at the Seaside Glass Villas, which have glass roofs perfect for viewing the northern lights.

A Village in Cyprus Is Now Home to This 16-Foot-Tall Potato Statue

The Belfast Tourist Board recommends that visitors to the Northern Ireland city should try to see “the world’s largest Titanic visitor experience,” the century-old Belfast Cathedral, and The Big Fish, a 32-foot long ceramic statue of a salmon. 

When officials in Xylofagou, a village in Cyprus, were trying to figure out what they could do to commemorate their most famous crop, they thought about Belfast’s Big Fish. But instead of a tiled mosaic covered with stories about their city — like that oversized salmon — Xylofagou ended up with, uh, a giant fiberglass potato on a stick. 

The newly unveiled 16-foot-tall replica of the ‘spunta’ potato variety cost the village €8,000 ($9,300) to design, build, and install. “The Big Potato” has also been roundly mocked on social media for its unfortunate resemblance to, uh, a very personal body part. (No giggling, please!)

“Xylofagou has a long legacy of potato growing and used to be the main potato grower in Cyprus. This helped the village grow into the 10,000-strong community it is today,” community leader George Tasou told the Cyprus Mail. He also said that he’s “not bothered” by the social media snickering about its shape, because the sculpture has gotten some much-needed publicity for Xylophagou. 

Tasou said that the Big Potato will soon be accompanied by more decorative elements and bench seating for people who want to be photographed near the giant spud. There is also a plan to add a “kiosk offering potatoes cooked in many different ways,” and the village may eventually build a potato museum that would show potato-growing tools and pictures of the different varieties of potatoes that are grown in the region. Next year, Xylophagou also wants to set a new Guinness World Record for frying the most French fries at one time; their goal is to cook around 1,760 pounds worth.

October 18, 2021 – Hiking, history, and howler monkeys are waiting at Costa Rica’s 30th national park.

Once the home of a wildlife refuge and a notoriously brutal prison, Costa Rica’s San Lucas Island now welcomes visitors to discover its new identity as the country’s 30th national park.

Located off the Pacific coast of the Gulf of Nicoya, San Lucas Island National Park is made up of both land and coastal areas that cover 1.8 square miles. With new purpose comes new features, so visitors can expect to find freshly minted hiking trails, toilets, 24-hour surveillance, and systems for electricity and water.

As reported by Lonely Planet, the wildlife that can be found on the island includes howler monkeys, spiders, snakes, deer, and pheasants. While in San Lucas, visitors can also explore the former prison buildings, which are now considered cultural heritage sites. Over 50 guides have been trained to help guests understand the history of the island and its former prison founded by the dictator Tomás Miguel Guardia Gutiérrez.

“San Lucas Island is part of Costa Rica’s history and heritage, so we are very pleased to reopen it as the country’s 30th national park,” Gustavo Segura Sancho, Costa Rica’s tourism minister, told Lonely Planet. “It will greatly surprise visitors looking for quieter spots when on holiday.”

San Lucas Island National Park can be reached via a 40-minute boat ride from the city of Puntarenas, located 60 miles from San José. It is the second national park in the region of Puntarenas, following Coco Island National Park. According to Lonely Planet, the new park was created in hopes of encouraging visitors to discover the country’s hidden gems, while also developing sustainable tourism opportunities and contributing to the socioeconomic development of the area.

Did you know that there is a palace in the world, that has its own ATM machine? Not only that, it also has a post office, a cafeteria, a movie theatre and 78 bathrooms.

Queen Elizabeth’s home is like a town! Equipped with a chapel, a post office, a staff cafeteria, a doctor’s office (outfitted for surgical procedures) and a movie theater, it doesn’t seem like the royals ever have to leave. The palace also has an indoor swimming pool, of course. The pool house is said to be seen to the left in the photo of the back of Buckingham.
 
The Palace has its own ATM
Cash money! In 2001, now-former head of Coutts bank, Gordon Pell, confirmed to The Standard that there is indeed an ATM inside Buckingham Palace. It is tucked away in the Palace basement and reserved for the royal family.
 
The Queen’s corgis have free reign of the place
Who let the dogs out? In Brian Hoey’s 2011 tell-all book Not In Front of the Corgis, a royal footman told the author that Queen Elizabeth’s beloved canines “are allowed unrestricted access to any part of any royal residence; nowhere is off-limits.” As they’re not completely house-trained, the pups sometimes relieve themselves inside the Palace and footmen have to clean up after them.
 
Most massive garden in all of London
A British quiz show in the vein of Jeopardy! touts that the Palace is home to the largest private garden in all of London. The well-manicured greenery encompasses 40 acres – four times the size of Wembley Stadiums, where major soccer matches (and the occasional football game) take place.
 
It has an underground tunnel system
While there is no secret underground Tube station, as many have speculated, the Palace does have secret tunnels that connect it to Clarence House and the House of Parliament.

Did you know that there is a group of islands, on which Darwin’s famous book “The origin of the Species” was based? He noticed that the animals were similar from island to island, but perfectly adapted to their surroundings. His book in 1859 completely changed people’s views on the origins of life.

Darwin’s visit to the Galapagos Islands had a resounding impact on the formation of his Theory of Natural Selection.
 
A rather unmotivated and failing medical scholar, Charles Darwin accompanied Captain Robert Fitzroy as a travel companion and naturalist on the HMS Beagle.
 
His book the Voyage of the Beagle is an account of his worldwide journey.
 
When setting off from England in 1831 for a five-year voyage, Darwin had little ambitions for ground-breaking scientific research.
 
After surveying the coasts of South America, the ship stopped over in the Galapagos Islands.
 
During his visit to the islands, Darwin noted that the unique creatures were similar from island to island, but perfectly adapted to their environments which led him to ponder the origin of the islands’ inhabitants.
 
Among those that struck Darwin so greatly were the finches that are now named in his honour. Darwin would later base some of his thought from the supposing that these finches were all descendants of the same lineage.
 
Years later in 1859, Darwin finally consolidated all of his observations into his famous book On The Origin of Species, drastically and controversially altering the scientific view on the biological origins of life.
