InterContinental Saigon is ecstatic to announce an exciting transformation of its Grand Ballroom and function spaces. Inspired by the national symbol of Vietnam, the lotus, the newly renovated ballroom, pre-function and meeting rooms at the InterContinental Saigon pay homage to Ho Chi Minh City and its surrounding landscape. The multi-million dollar renovation which encompassed the 2,560 square meters of indoor and outdoor event meeting space, including six function rooms and an outdoor terrace, ranging from the compact Hon Ong meeting room to the expansive Grand Ballroom, opens up a new frontier for Ho Chi Minh City’s thriving MICE sector.

Setting the new benchmark for meetings in Ho Chi Minh City, our newly renovated meeting rooms have all been clad in beautiful timber with delicate metal detailing. All meeting rooms and board rooms are also designed with a multipurpose cabinet that is outfitted with a display area and storage on either sides. Double sliding doors with ribbed glass conceal the TV when not in use and showcase the display area. When guests want to use the TV, the doors slide to either side and reveal an 85″ interactive TV with video conference capabilities. These sliding doors may also be used for writing, replacing the need for additional flipcharts.

At the centre of the function spaces is a chic, stylish and magnificent 818-square meter pillar-free Grand Ballroom that can host up to 1200 attendees for life’s most meaningful and memorable moments, such as gala dinners, award ceremonies, corporate conventions, one-of-a-kind weddings and more. It is fully equipped with the latest audio-visual technology and can be flexibly divided into two separate spaces for more intimate events. The Grand Ballroom is decked with an oversized interactive chandelier featuring 7,980 individually hung crystal lightbulbs that represent glistening water when viewed from underneath.

The chandelier also comes equipped with its own state-of-the-art adjustable lighting technology systems that can be changed to evoke different moods with the use of RGBW LED lighting control system. The Grand Ballroom also boasts an awe-inspiring 8.5m by 4.5m LED wall, the largest screen in town and with its new inspiring architecture, InterContinental Saigon’s Grand Ballroom gives your celebration a glamorous and deeply sensorial experience.

Upon entering the Pre-Function foyer, guests will be impressed by a curvilinear fabric ceiling feature that depicts the Mekong River. This feature ebbs and flows the entire length of the pre-function, giving softness and airiness to the space. The translucent fabric interplays with the specifically created lighting effects and offers a variety of programmable light hues and visual cues that will help further set the mood. The design of the carpet, in coastal hues of navy, beige and yellow – which resembles the water environment that the lotus lives in – covers the floor, while the decorative columns represent the intertwining of the lotus stems in the water as they reach the surface for sunlight.

Just off the Pre-Function area is a new Business Hub, created to cater to the ever-changing needs of guests. This transformable space features built-in ovens, fridge and a generous-sized counter that can be used for a master cooking class. This beautiful space can be used as a meeting room with a lounge or can be used as an auxiliary space to the Pre-Function area.

Cathay Pacific welcomes the Hong Kong SAR Government’s latest measures to facilitate quarantine-free travel between Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland, as well as the lifting of transit restrictions, effective 8 January 2023.

In light of today’s announcement, Cathay Pacific will more than double its flights into the Chinese Mainland, operating 61 return flights per week between Hong Kong and 13 Mainland cities from 14 January 2023. This compares to the 27 flights per week from Hong Kong to the Mainland, and 50 flights per week from the Mainland to Hong Kong that the airline is currently operating.

Cathay Pacific is working actively to resume and add more flights progressively between Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland in the coming weeks, with the aim of operating over 100 return flights per week by March 2023.

From 8 January 2023, Cathay Pacific will increase its flights between Hong Kong and Beijing to 10 pairs per week, and between Hong Kong and Shanghai (Pudong) to 21 pairs per week. The airline is also resuming flights to Guangzhou with five return flights per week.

Meanwhile, from 14 January 2023 the airline will increase its flights between Hong Kong and Xiamen to four pairs per week, and between Hong Kong and Chengdu to six pairs per week.
As of today, Cathay Pacific operates flights serving close to 60 destinations worldwide. The airline continues to add more destinations to its schedule. Please visit our website for the latest flight schedule and information.

The Group remains fully committed to rebuilding the connectivity of the Hong Kong international aviation hub. As a Group, we anticipate that we will be operating around 70% of pre-pandemic passenger flight capacity by the end of 2023, with an aim to return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2024.

The carrier has also increased frequencies on routes such as Paris to daily flights from five times a week, Madagascar to nine times per week from seven, Comoros to five times weekly from four, Amsterdam to five times every week from four, Johannesburg to 24 times from four weekly and London to 14 times from 12 times.

KQ has grappled with fluctuating demand on the US route since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, hence the shifting flight frequencies.“The network enhancement is routine and is informed by the return to air travel as the aviation industry recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic and in support of the tourism sector in Kenya,” said the airline.

It has, however, been struggling with low numbers on the route since it resumed operations following months of grounding occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic.
This flight allows the airline to benefit from connecting travellers who transit through JKIA from other African capitals that lack direct access to the world’s largest economy.

TAP Air Portugal (TAP) has reopened the doors to its new look Lisbon lounge following a comprehensive refurbishment for premium customers. The month-long renovation has completely remodernised and expanded the airline’s airport experience to comfortably offer access to up to 320 premium customers at the same time.

Operated in partnership with organic food supplier Go Natural, who work alongside some of the top restaurants in the country, putting a greater emphasis on Portuguese provenance. Furnishings feature the airline’s green and brown signature colour palette to create a warm, natural and more welcoming environment with more space, more plants and a redesigned refreshment and dining area.

Customers will be able to choose from an enhanced selection of Portuguese dining options including desserts, and select a delicious meal for every hour of the day. From January, a choice of both hot and cold dishes will be available, showcasing Portugal’s world-famous gastronomy, including offering gluten-free, lactose-free, vegetarian, and vegan options.

Eligible customers able to access the newly revamped lounge include those flying in Executive Class, as well as those with TAP Miles & Go Silver, TAP Miles & Go Gold or Star Alliance Gold status, and those holding TAP Platinum Visa cards.

TAP’s investment in the new Premium Lounge in Lisbon is part of the airline’s strategy to reprioritise an enhanced customer service experience, both on the ground and in the air. Earlier this week, TAP also announced a new partnership with Teleperformance, a global leader in integrated digital services, to make the entire TAP customer support process more agile, efficient, and fast.

Etihad Airways is set to strengthen air connectivity between the UAE and China next year, starting with an additional weekly frequency on its Abu Dhabi – Shanghai route.

Subject to regulatory approval, from February 2023, the airline will fly to Pudong International Airport (PVG) two times per week using modern Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft.

Combined with a weekly service to Beijing and a twice-weekly service to Guangzhou, this will provide travellers with five weekly nonstop flights between Abu Dhabi and China.

Martin Drew, Senior Vice President of Global Sales & Cargo at Etihad Aviation Group, said: “Etihad Airways is delighted to add a second weekly passenger service to Shanghai following the further relaxation of Covid-related travel measures.

“China is a market of primary importance to Etihad, and as one of the country’s largest financial and economic centres, Shanghai plays a crucial role in our network.

“Etihad is committed to developing our operation to China, and we look forward to welcoming more travellers on board in the new year to experience our award-winning hospitality.”

Today’s announcement follows the launch of nonstop flights between Abu Dhabi and Guangzhou in October 2022, when Etihad Airways became the first international airline to operate long-haul passenger flights to the top three Chinese gateways since the start of the pandemic.

The airline marked another milestone in China earlier this year when it operated the first regular international passenger flight to recommence to Beijing when the capital reopened for international direct travel in June 2022.

Dialogue between art and the values of Helsinki

The vivid Cultural Helsinki highlights, open for everyone, supports the wellbeing of Helsinki citizens and reflects upon the issues of society. The year 2023 is marked by multiple great exhibition openings that explore current topics, such as climate change and human rights. Ateneum, Finnish National Museum of Art, will open its doors after a year-long renovation, and Helsinki Biennial, contemporary art event, will take place for the second time in the summer 2023, 12 June until 17 September.

Helsinki Biennial 2023 reveals New Directions May Emerge as the title of its second edition, which will take place from 12 June to 17 September 2023. The biennial brings together around 30 established and emerging artists and collectives from Finland and across the world. Curated by Joasia Krysa, the biennial reflects on some of the major issues of our time that appear irresolvable, such as environmental damage, political conflict and the effects of technology.

One of the most famous Finnish artists in history, Tom of Finland is renowned for his distinctive style and iconic images that make a statement for freedom of love. Built around the character types such as the logger, biker, army officer and policeman created by Touko Valio Laaksonen (8 May 1920 – 7 November 1991), the show at Kiasma, Museum of Contemporary Art, covers the artist’s career spanning six decades. The exhibition offers an unprecedentedly extensive view of the life and times of Tom of Finland.

International career of Albert Edelfelt, retrospective exhibition at Ateneum Art Museum, 5.5.–17.9.2023

The retrospective of works by Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905) in Ateneum Art Museum examines Edelfelt’s entire career and, in particular, his role as an international influencer. The artist was a trailblazer who paved the way for later Finnish artists to gain a foothold in Paris. Edelfelt also played a major role in the World Fairs held in Paris in 1889 and 1900, both as an artist and a spokesperson. In 1900 Finland had its first own pavilion, which was also a political issue at that time.

New cultural venues

The centre of Helsinki is marked by different architectural layers, as the city has prioritised the reuse and revitalisation of its architectural landmarks, offering improved cultural spaces that contribute to the evolving character and shape of the city. Another great example of circular design is the transformation of the old Russian barrack building from the 1830’s, used as a bus station until 2005, into a new cultural centre called Kulttuurikasarmi, in autumn 2023. The cultural centre is located directly next to Amos Rex Art Museum and will house a new cinema, restaurants, pavilion, event spaces and an outdoor stage.

A new architectonical layer will vitalize the South Harbour of Helsinki, where the New Museum of Architecture and Design will be built. The new museum will combine the existing specialized museums, Design Museum and Museum of Finnish Architecture. A separate design competition will be held for the museum building, prospectively designated to launch in 2023 once the museum’s realisation is finalised.

Hungry for Helsinki

The strengths of Helsinki’s food scene are versatility, innovative mindset, local ingredients and a certain uniqueness. Restaurants, market halls and food trucks are a central part of urban vitality. The level of the top restaurants in Helsinki is illustrated by the number of Michelin starred restaurants – restaurant Palace has two stars since 2022 and is accompanied by six one-star restaurants. Restaurant Natura was awarded this year a Michelin Green Star award. The Michelin Green Star is an annual award which highlights restaurants at the forefront of the industry when it comes to their sustainable practices.

Helsinki has published a Helsinki Tourism and Events Programme for 2022–2026. The programme highlights vibrant urban culture complete with events, tourists and restaurants as a key strategic priority for promoting the city’s vitality and wellbeing. Internationally, food has become an important appeal factor for tourism in recent years. Helsinki already has a number of innovative restaurants, a high-quality food offering, interesting market halls and culinary experience providers, which is why Helsinki wants to invest more in food travel.

One of the highlights of 2023 is the opening of Hakaniemi Market Hall after a complete renovation that has conserved its original beauty from 1914 but brought it to the technological standards required today. The market hall is home to multiple vendors selling fresh food ingredients and delicacies, pastries, handicrafts, gifts, flowers and toys. “The first time cast members brought the Walter Elias train into Main Street Station, guests and cast gathered below to cheer and welcome the trains home,” John muses. “You can see the excitement on kid’s faces as they see the train coming around the corner for the first time and hear its whistle. It’s magical, and an honor to introduce the next generation to the beauty of steam trains, carrying on my family and Walt’s legacy.”

From a young age, the sound of a train whistle was a familiar staple in cast member John’s life. Both his grandfather and great-grandfather were engineers on the steam trains at the Pittsburgh steel mills. John never imagined he would carry on their, and Walt’s legacy, at the Magic Kingdom Park overseeing the Walt Disney World Railroad’s historic return today.

Starting at Magic Kingdom in 1995, John’s first role was as a Conductor on the Walt Disney World Railroad. “It was this moment of serendipity,” John explains. “My grandma was so tickled that I was working on the railroad just like my grandfathers. They love to tell the story that when I was born, my grandfather was on the train and blew his whistle nonstop when he found out he was having a grandson.”

A young 17-year-old at the time, John was incredulous that he was being trusted with such an iconic piece of the park. “You can’t get more Disney than the steam train,” he says. He felt a deep connection with Walt, but also his grandfathers who had both since passed away.

Now, 28 years later, John has spent almost the entirety of his Disney career on Main Street, U.S.A. His full-circle journey has brought him to this very moment where he now oversees the operation of the Walt Disney World Railroad! The enormity of bringing these historical 100-year-old trains back to the Magic Kingdom isn’t lost on him. It’s an opportunity to introduce guests to the same feelings of whimsy and childlike wonder that made him fall in love with the park all those years ago.

Al Hosn Festival, Abu Dhabi’s annual celebration of the emirate’s cultural heritage, is set to return with a packed ten-day programme taking place from 13 to 22 January at the iconic Al Hosn site.
Set across Al Hosn’s historic buildings and outdoor areas, the event will showcase the best of Abu Dhabi’s heritage as well as the breadth of its creativity.

Organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the festival promises an exciting array of activities for visitors of all ages, with cultural performances, film screenings, art installations, craft and design demonstrations, creative workshops, retail pop-ups, and a variety of culinary experiences.

His Excellency Mohammed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “Each year, Al Hosn Festival tells the story of Abu Dhabi at its place of origin. A key component of our cultural calendar, the festival celebrates Abu Dhabi’s heritage and craftsmanship and connects them with the contemporary art practices of the emirate. The festival has quickly become a focus of inspiration and exchange for the emirate’s cultural ecosystem, and a key element of DCT Abu Dhabi’s drive to both preserve the emirate’s treasured heritage and support and grow its new generation of artists and creative practitioners.”

Activations will span the vast Al Hosn site, with Qasr Al Hosn transporting visitors back in time to offer a glimpse of life in Abu Dhabi in decades past. Guests will enjoy live demonstrations of Emirati craftsmanship and artisanal techniques at House of Artisans, where they can also participate in creative workshops and witness competitions highlighting Emirati cultural excellence.
Similarly, Cultural Foundation is once again set to offer an engaging and thought-provoking programme of art exhibitions, performances, film screenings, interactive installations and workshops.

The festival’s Makers Village is set to return, offering unique items created by artists and designers from local and regional concept stores. There will also be a creative culinary experience.

Al Hosn Festival provides a platform for cultural experimentation and exchange in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s ever-evolving urban landscape, while remaining rooted in the emirate’s authentic traditions. The event aligns with the vision and mandate of DCT Abu Dhabi to protect, preserve and promote the emirate’s heritage, showcase Abu Dhabi as a cultural destination and provide a platform for artistic experimentation and public engagement.

Al Hosn is the original urban block of the city and comprises the historic Qasr Al Hosn Fort, the Cultural Foundation, the National Consultative Council building and the House of Artisans. December 27, 2022 – Holiday Inn Express Deventer

IHG Hotels & Resorts and Cycas Hospitality have celebrated the opening of the first Holiday Inn Express in Deventer, Netherlands, with the opening of Holiday Inn Express Deventer. Operated by Cycas Hospitality, as part of a lease agreement with Bruil Bouw, the new-build property pairs 83 Holiday Inn Express guest rooms that have been designed to balance home comforts with smart design features, with 16 fully equipped suites, allowing the hotel to cater for both shorter and longer stay guests.

Alongside the familiar hotel facilities guests can expect from the Holiday Inn Express Deventer brand such as the included Express Start® Breakfast and Grab & Go Pantry, all 99 guestrooms feature the Holiday Inn Express Next Generation room design, aimed at enhancing guest experience and equipping travellers with everything they need for a great stay. Key features include blackout curtains, high-quality bedding, a power shower, and free high-speed Wi-Fi. Rooms are also fitted with smart design features such as a flexible workspace, a flat screen TV where guests can mirror content from their phones, ergonomically designed chairs and ample USB ports and plug sockets next to the bed. The 16 one-bedroom suites also include a kitchenette, living space and work area.

In the hotel’s lobby, guests will find tables with integrated power – all part of the brand’s Next Generation design solutions. The property also includes a 24-hour reception with express check-in and check-out, extensive car parking, and the Express Café & Bar, a thoughtfully designed communal space where guests can relax, recharge or be productive and then be on their way.

Connections to The Netherlands & Beyond
The property is located on the outskirts of Deventer along the A1 motorway, the main connection between The Netherlands and Germany. With proximity to bus line 6 and 7 minutes from the main train station in Deventer with onward rail connections across Europe, the hotel is easily accessible. As a result, both Amsterdam and the German border are less than an hour away, with five international airports all within a 90 minutes’ drive from the hotel.
