Colombia’s Post-Outbreak Tourism Strategy Focused on Six Cities

blank

Colombia’s national focus on environmental sustainability isn’t just a tourism strategy, it’s national policy. Now officials at ProColombia, the country’s destination marketing agency, are using that mandate as a roadmap to form tourism-rebuilding initiatives following the pandemic’s outbreak.

ProColombia is focusing promotional programs on six regions that showcase the country’s world-leading biodiversity and distinctive cultural attractions and experiences rooted in Colombia’s indigenous music, gastronomy, artistry and historic sites.

“We are committed to a new way of working with the country’s regions to position Colombia as ideal for international travellers by empowering new segments such as nautical, archaeological and community-based tourism,” said Flavia Santoro, president of ProColombia.

Travel to the destination is rebounding strongly following the outbreak, Santoro said, led by visitors from the U.S. Colombia has hosted 172,000 American visitors to date in 2021, a 16.6 percent increase over pandemic-stricken 2020.

“This makes the U.S. the only country with positive numbers of travelers to Colombia between 2020 and 2021,” said Santoro. “Colombia is well-connected to the U.S. and has already recovered more than 60 percent of the [airline] connectivity we had in February of 2020.”

Colombia reopened its borders to international flights on September 21, 2020, after launching a national pandemic recovery plan that includes “the implementation of biosafety parameters for travellers,” said Santoro.

Since last year, 13 new airline routes between Colombia and the United States have been announced, connecting U.S. cities including Miami, Newark, New York and Orlando with Bogota, Medellin, Cali and Cartagena, Colombia.

Safe Passage

Santoro said Colombia’s health and safety measures have enabled travellers to safely return to the country. She said 38 million vaccines have been applied in Colombia, whose population totals 50.4 million residents. “The country has made it easy for travellers to enter Colombia,” Santoro said.

Indeed, Colombia’s entry process is relatively simple. Visitors are not required to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result to enter the country. Travelers who experience coronavirus symptoms during or 14 days after their inbound flight are required to report it to the local health authorities and isolate immediately.

Special Six

In terms of tourism promotion, Santoro said ProColombia is focusing on six regions of the country. “We are concentrating on attracting tourism that benefits not only travellers, but travel companies, the environment and the community,” Santoro said.

The Greater Colombian Caribbean, described by officials as the land of Nobel Prize-winning Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, features rainforests, snow-capped peaks and desert dunes, and is home to cities including Cartagena, Santa Marta, Barranquilla and San Andres Island.

The Western Andes region is highlighted by Colombia’s coffee route and features mountains, exotic birds and flower-covered valleys in cities including Medellin and Pereira. Described as the centre of Colombia’s colonial past and its struggle for liberation, the eastern Andes region is distinguished by soaring mountains and expansive national parks in Bogota, Villa de Leyva and Bucaramanga.

“We are concentrating on attracting tourism that benefits not only travellers, but travel companies, the environment and the community.” – Flavia Santoro, president of Pro Colombia. (Photo by Brian Major)

Colombia’s Massif region encompasses paramos, volcanoes and the country’s largest rivers, with accessible evidence of ancient Colombian civilizations in archaeological parks and indigenous communities in the Popayan and Pasto regions. The Colombian Amazon is an immense centre of biodiverse rainforests and white water rapids.

Described by officials as Colombia’s “best-kept secret,” the country’s Pacific coast features rainforests leading to the ocean where visitors can view humpback whales and sea turtles. The region has a distinctive African heritage maintained by the present-day residents of Cali, Nuquí and on Gorgona Island.

The natural and cultural attractions combine with practical advantages, Santoro said. “Colombia is the most biodiverse country per square meter in the world according to the United Nations,” she said. “We also have connectivity, accessibility, a favourable exchange rate and a culture of service.”

Lufthansa adds more flights to USA due to high demand

airline news

Airline news from around the world
More airline news

September 28, 2021 – About a week after the planned end of U.S. travel restrictions, Lufthansa Group airlines are experiencing a further boom for flights to the United States. On certain days in the last week, flights across the Atlantic increased three-fold over the week before. Demand in the last week on certain routes almost reached pre-crisis levels. Flights with SWISS from Zurich and Lufthansa from Frankfurt to New York and from Frankfurt and Zurich to Miami had the highest bookings from both leisure and business travellers. In Premium Economy, Business and First Class more tickets to the USA were bought than in the same period in 2019.

Lufthansa Group is meeting this boom in pent-up demand by launching additional flights to the USA on short notice. Lufthansa and SWISS, for example, will be offering a combined total of three daily flights to Miami on short notice starting in November.

There is very strong demand for flights to the USA for the coming December. New bookings in the past week for this month were as high as they were for 2019 for the same time period. Flights to New York – traditionally in high demand during the Christmas season – have already been bolstered with additional connections. The airlines of the Lufthansa Group are offering up to 55 weekly connections to New York from their various European hubs in Austria, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland in December. A further short-term expansion of services is currently under consideration.

Alone to New York and Chicago, Lufthansa Group airlines offer more daily connections from Europe in November than flights to the entire Asia-Pacific region. Lufthansa Group expects that the opening of the U.S. to vaccinated EU travellers will be a signal for other countries and regions to make international air travel easier again and roll back travel restrictions.

Brazilian Startup Airline ITA

Brazil has a new airline.

This new company aims to become Brazil’s most prominent player, though it has a long road ahead and has already faced a few setbacks. Let’s investigate further.

Regarding domestic flights, the airlines predict to resume all routes by the end of the first semester of 2022.

Right now, the numbers of daily departures are 75% compared to pre-pandemic numbers. They expect to end 2021 at 85%. There is a push for more regional flights as new airport concessions are being made, and the appearance of a new airline, ITA, has pushed Azul, Gol and Latam to resume routes so they won’t lose market share.

ITA is currently flying to 19 destinations in Brazil and plans to end 2022 with 35 routes. They do not have an aggressive price strategy, but they want to differentiate themselves by offering 1 free checked bag (around R$50 or U$10 benefit, compared to the others), more leg space, free seat assignment, meals and drinks on-board when they return, integration with their bus fleet. This might be the biggest advantage for international tourists, they will be able to fly to Rio and connect by land to Buzios by bus, directly from the airport, with one ticket.

KLM to serve more US destinations this winter

airline news

Airline news from around the world

September 27, 2021 Thanks to the recent easing of travel restrictions, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will be allowed to operate additional services to destinations in the United States this winter. The US recently announced that, from the start of November, vaccinated travellers from the EU and UK would be granted access to the US. The Dutch government also decided to withdraw previously announced quarantine regulations for vaccinated travellers from the United States. Earlier, KLM had been forced to cancel flights due to these regulations.

The easing of restrictions prompted KLM’s decision to resume service to Las Vegas and Miami from 7 December. Passengers to these destinations, who were previously rebooked, can contact KLM for a free rebooking to these direct flights.

KLM previously announced that it would expand its winter schedule with services to four new destinations: Cancun (Mexico), Port of Spain (Trinidad & Tobago), Bridgetown (Barbados) and Mombasa (Kenya).

Network strategy
Restoring a global network of destinations is the focal point of KLM’s strategy to emerge from the coronavirus crisis as a stronger and more competitive airline. From the start of the coronavirus pandemic, KLM has maintained as much of its network as possible. This ensured that passengers could continue to make (essential) trips and that cargo, including medical goods and vaccines, could be transported. This strategy was of great benefit to KLM during the pandemic and now makes it easier to scale up operations. KLM will continue to insist on greater consistency in policy on travel restrictions.

Increase in business trips being booked from Belgium

airline news

Airline news from around the world

The number of people travelling from Belgium for professional reasons has once again started to pick up after the coronavirus crisis resulted in a major drop in corporate travel.

Belgian airline company Brussels Airlines noted a weekly increase in bookings of 30 to 40% in the last month and is expecting companies to ease restrictions in their travel policies as of October, despite many multinationals still applying a (partial) teleworking policy.

“Brussels Airlines expects that the demand for corporate travel will reach the level of 2019 again by 2024. The demand for leisure travel on the other hand has recuperated much faster,” a press release stated.

Based on the company’s data, the sectors that started up corporate travel first are the European and other political institutions, universities and the Marine business, later followed by the automotive industry, international construction companies and building material producers and NGOs.

At the moment, European destinations, including Italy (Milan), Slovenia (due to it holding the EU Presidency), Denmark (Copenhagen), Czech Republic (Prague), Germany (Berlin) are among the most popular for business trips.

In the first 24 hours after the announcement by the United States government on Tuesday that it would be easing travel restrictions on travel from the EU, allowing vaccinated and tested travellers to enter the country again from November, the company noted a booking increase of 180% to US destinations.

However, according to a recent Wall Street Journal analysis, the continuation of business trips, at least in and from the US, between 19% and 36% of all business trips that were made before the pandemic is likely to disappear permanently, in part due to the fact that many businesses have adopted more (cost-) efficient alternatives to corporate travel.

Instead, it found that many organisations are pushing for video conference calls to replace in-person meetings and visits, also in an effort to cut carbon emissions and, at least in the short-term, to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Before the pandemic, corporate travellers usually booked their trips two to three weeks in advance, however, the Brussels’ Airlines’ customer data showed that the trend of last-minute bookings has also resulted in trips being books just two to three days before people’s departure.

Namibia Hosea Kutako Airport Upgrade is nearing completion. Airports Company (NAC) spokesperson Dan Kamati has announced that rehabilitation work will be finished shortly. This, according to sources, will give the country’s tourism business a new face.

The country’s main international airport is Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital.

According to Xinhua, Kamati stated that the true completion date for the congestion reduction project is September 30, 2021. According to a NAC spokeswoman, the country’s major airport is being expanded to match international standards set by other airport terminals worldwide. He said that the airport extension will help improve the country’s image among visitors at a time when tourism is suffering because of the COVID epidemic.

According to the Nambian, the Hosea Kutako Airport Upgrade will include specialised equipment such as luggage handling and baggage claims and will be authorised and operationalised by the end of next month. The proposal also involves developing terminal facilities for domestic, VIP, and VVIP planes. Nexus Contractors is working on this project with other 100% Namibian-owned subcontracting and consulting firms.

The NAC has contributed around N$95 million to the construction budget, with the remainder coming from the national government. The project aimed to triple the airport’s processing capacity in order to manage growing passenger volume. An extra 18 check-in desks and five self-service check-in kiosks will be installed, as will departure security checkpoint stations and baggage reclamation facilities.

According to the Namibian, the project also includes expanding the departure lounge and increasing the number of departure immigration offices from three to seven to handle increased passenger traffic at the airport. Arrivals will benefit from a redesigned departure lounge with more moving room and 17 immigration desks, up from the existing eight.

The baggage reclaims corridor will be extended, and three additional conveyor belts will be added, increasing the total number of conveyor belts to five. According to Dan Kamati, nearly four airlines have expressed interest in restarting flights to Windhoek.

The Gozo Tourism Association welcomes the Prime Minister’s pledge to create an air link service between Gozo and Malta. (21 Sept 2021)

Gozo’s tourism operators have welcomed Prime Minister Robert Abela’s pledge to have an air link between Gozo and Malta.

The Gozo Tourism Association said on Monday that “one of its connectivity measures proposed along the years is on course to be realised”.

The association welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment, including the promise that no agricultural land will be taken up to create an airstrip.

On Saturday, Abela told a session of the Labour Party’s general conference in Għajnsielem his government was committed to set up an air link between the islands. He added the development will not only mean better accessibility but also help create niche economic sectors in Gozo linked to aviation such as pilot training and drone research.

The GTA agreed that an air link could serve as a catalyst for new economic activities.

It also welcomed Abela’s commitment to have a new fourth Gozo Channel vessel, which will be more environment friendly.

“These are all significant steps towards inter island connectivity… An all year round island tourist destination, like Gozo, can only be saleable if there are reliable, consistent, effective and cost sensitive types of connectivity from and to the mainland and from the outside world,” the GTA said.

Emirates launches an airline virtual reality application

Emirates is claiming a first with the launch of an airline virtual reality application on the Oculus store.

The app enables prospective passengers to view facilities such as the first class product, onboard lounge, the wider cabin and explore the cockpit.

The content can be viewed via the Emirates website, mobile app and most recently via an Oculus Rift device.

According to an Emirates’ spokesperson the carrier has continued to invest in its virtual reality experience which started in 2018 with the carrier launching its first VR efforts.

“This initiative expands our global reach and ability to engage with our audiences across digital platforms. It is also particularly relevant right now, as many people have not travelled for a while due to the pandemic, and are seeking inspiration and researching and rediscovering their flight options.”

The technology was developed in partnership with Renacen and there are plans to update the content to include the airline’s Premium Economy cabin as well as its latest A380 interiors.

Customers can also view and select seats via a 3D seat map prior to check in using any VR headset such as Google Cardboard.

Emirates also plans to enable customers to explore destinations and book and pay for their flight from within the Oculus VR app.

Diego Cachero, chief executive of Spain-based Renacen, says the development “positions and differentiates us internationally as leaders in 3D and VR development, both for web and heavy applications.”

Carriers have tested different virtual and augmented reality applications in recent years with Virgin Atlantic partnering with Sita to use VR for crew training while Air New Zealand launched an AR experience for travel inspiration.

British Airways and Qantas have both trialled the technology for the inflight experience.

Eurowings opens base in Sweden

airline news

Airline news from around the world
More airline news

September 17, 2021 Germany’s largest and most popular vacation carrier to take off from first major Scandinavian location as of March 2022.

  • Lufthansa Group subsidiary will operate five Airbus A320 aircraft from Stockholm and add 150 crew members for the start-up
  • Eurowings set to be the new Swedish business and vacation airline / operations will launch in March 2022
  • It will start with 20 low-cost direct flights to major European cities like Berlin, Barcelona, and Rome, as well as many holiday destinations like Palma de Mallorca
  • Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof: “We will attract many Swedish vacationers and business travelers with our cutting-edge services.”

Eurowings is further developing its European network to Scandinavia with the opening of its new location in Stockholm. The popular German airline is offering new services in Scandinavia and will initially station five Airbus A320 aircraft in Stockholm by March 2022. This will be the eleventh Eurowings base of operations in Europe and the fifth outside its home market of Germany after Palma de Mallorca, Prague, Pristina, and Salzburg.

For the first time, the Lufthansa Group value carrier will offer attractive direct connections from Scandinavia to business and vacation destinations throughout Europe. With its increased presence in the Nordics, Eurowings will not only provide better connections to and from Sweden, but especially flights to popular beach destinations in Southern Europe for Swedish customers. The latest Eurowings base at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport also brings hundreds of new jobs to the region and – in what is hopefully the final phase of the Corona pandemic – an important stimulus for employment in the Scandinavian aviation market.

Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof: “Sweden is a market that fits perfectly with our goal to be the number one European value carrier. Since the pandemic, many travelers are no longer looking first for the cheapest ticket, but for an airline they can unconditionally trust in terms of safety, reliability, and social responsibility. With our Lufthansa DNA – for example an attractive network of low-cost direct flights and an unmatched customer service – we can offer just that.”

In July 2021, Eurowings was again the most punctual airline in Europe and just recently was awarded triple gold at the German Customer Award presentations: best customer service, best customer satisfaction and best value for money. “We have done our homework and responded quickly to new customer needs and requests and used the crisis to make necessary changes in all areas,” Bischof emphasizes. “It is why Eurowings is more competitive today than ever before. With our consistent value-for-money approach, we are convinced we will soon also attract many Swedish vacationers and business travelers with our cutting-edge services.”

Eurowings flies from Stockholm to 20 European locations for the first time starting on 27 March, 2022. The first published routes to and from Stockholm include popular Southern European sun destinations: Palma de Mallorca, Alicante and Malaga in Spain, Faro in Portugal, and Nice in Southern France. Other attractive destinations Eurowings will initially fly to include Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, Copenhagen, Birmingham, Gdansk, and Pristina. Further destinations will be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets can be booked shortly via eurowings.com and the Eurowings app. Tickets are already available for booking starting at SEK 299 (29.99 euros) for a one-way flight.

Cologne-based Eurowings combines Lufthansa’s DNA with a value-for-money concept and innovative customer services: an industry-leading health and hygiene concept and the option of booking free middle seats in the rear rows of the aircraft for as little as ten euros  for comfort or hygienic reasons. This option alone has already been sold over 50,000 times in a short period and is a bestseller among Eurowings customers.
