February 22, 2022 – Kempinski Hotel Yanbu

Kempinski grows in Saudi Arabia and expands portfolio with stylish luxury hotel on the Red Sea

With direct access to the Red Sea waterfront on the secluded offshore of Al Mahar Island and part of the lively port city of Yanbu, arises the upcoming luxury five star Kempinski Hotel & Resort Yanbu, opening later this year.

Kempinski Hotel Yanbu

The property will reopen as the leading luxury resort hotel in the Royal Commission of Yanbu in western Saudi Arabia. After a complete closure during the coming months, the existing sprawling complex will be meticulously renovated and repositioned in readiness for the most discerning guests.

Offering exclusivity, a bespoke welcome, a place of belonging and a truly private enclave of tranquillity; it will be renowned for its elegance on the beachfront.

In keeping with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, the property will cater to myriad travellers, no matter their reason for visiting the area. The Kempinski Hotel Yanbu will be known as a place for conducting business in addition to being a favoured location for leisure guests.

The building plan of the Kempinski hotel Yanbu includes a reduction in the number of deluxe rooms, resulting in 23 spacious additional suites, perfectly complementing the 12 architecturally designed villas and 48 designer apartments, tailored for a bespoke clientele with a taste for the extraordinary.

Five high-quality restaurants and lounges will offer exquisite culinary experiences with Kempinski bringing its world-renowned food and beverage knowledge and award-winning chefs to Yanbu.

An infinity pool, a fitness centre, a private beach, a marina for excursions to enjoy a day at sea, a diving school as well as spacious meeting and conference areas, which are also particularly suitable for stylish weddings, leave nothing to be desired. A separate and exclusive 3000 sq m Ladies’ Spa with its secluded beach, steam baths, hammam, treatment rooms, restaurant and tea lounge, as well as a future prestigious Royal Villa, round off the comprehensive offer.

Indeed, the destination of Yanbu has a lot to offer: While in the old town, an important post on the spice route, guests can visit a typical Hijazi building where the famous British military officer T.E. Lawrence lived, the night market Souk Al Lail invites to stroll in the late evening.

At Yanbu Lake, one of the largest artificial lakes in the country, a botanical paradise enchants with flora from all over the world, and in the coral-rich bay of Sharm Yanbu, divers find their tourist highlight. In the northeast of the city, Mount Radwa rises to 2,200 m, the highest point in the Al-Nakhil Mountains, known for honey and wild nature and the destination of regular tours.

The future Kempinski Hotel & Resort Yanbu is only 20 minutes away from Yanbu International Airport, which offers domestic flights to Dammam, Jeddah and Riyadh, as well as flights to Cairo, Istanbul, Dubai and Sharjah. By car, it is less than 2.5 hours to Al Madinah and 3.5 hours to Makkah.

F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022 – dates confirmed for June 10-12 spectators allowed

F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022

February 21, 2022 – F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022

Fantastic news – the dates have been announced for the F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022. It will take place from June 10-12 this year. Spectators will be allowed.

The Grand Prix is one of the most challenging and punishing circuits on the F1 calendar, pitting drivers against some of the tightest corners and fastest straights around.

F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022

Initially held as the European Grand Prix in 2016, the Baku City Circuit hosted the first Azerbaijan Grand Prix a year later in one of the five street courses on the calendar in 2017.

Designed by architect Hermann Tilke, the circuit follows a series of right-angled turns into rapid flat-out sections which, before the introduction of new aerodynamics rules in 2016, pushed cars to speeds of over 360 km/h.

F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022:

Comparable to the tight twists of Monaco – in the way that the track forces drivers to both commit to each turn while being aware of the perils of straying too close to the edge – the Baku City Circuit has been the site of numerous high-speed crashes.

Charles Leclerc learned that the hard way in 2019 by crashing at Turn 8 in qualifying. The section is the tightest on the Formula 1 calendar, and sees the cars work their way around Baku’s UNESCO-protected old city walls.

Bangkok name change – no change!

Bangkok name change

February 21, 2022 – Bangkok name change – It’s still Bangkok: Thailand quells talk of name change

After some confusions, the Royal Society issued a clarification explaining: “Writing the capital city’s official name with the Roman alphabet can be done both as Krung Thep Maha Nakon and Bangkok.”

Bangkok name change

No, English speakers and others using the Roman alphabet aren’t going to have to start calling the Thai capital by its local name, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, and drop the more familiar “Bangkok.”

That’s the message from Thailand’s Royal Society, which is responsible for academic and linguistic standards, after a seemingly innocuous change in punctuation in official guidance sparked a flurry of speculation that the city’s name was being changed.
It started when the Cabinet on Tuesday approved a Royal Society proposal changing the way the capital would be referred to internationally from “Krung Thep Maha Nakhon; Bangkok” to “Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok).”

As people sought to divine the meaning behind changing the semicolon to parentheses, many put great weight to the accompanying explanation that it would “revise” the name of the capital city and keep the “former” name in brackets.

February 16, 2022 – Costa cruises restarts with entire fleet

Starting next summer the entire Costa Cruises’ fleet will resume operations, with the four most innovative ships to be deployed in the Mediterranean and free shore excursions.

Costa Cruises restarts and continues its gradual restart plan for 2022.  From 5 March, the date on which the new Costa Toscana, star of the recent edition of the Sanremo Music Festival, will set sail for her first cruise, an increasing number of the company’s ships will return to service, joining those already sailing.

Costa cruises restarts

Next summer, the company’s entire fleet will resume operations, with all four of the new ships delivered in recent months – Costa Toscana, Costa Smeralda, Costa Firenze and Costa Venezia – deployed in the Mediterranean. Also, for the summer period, with the hope of favorable regulations, the company is planning to carry out again shore excursions in free mode, and, in light of the gradual relaxation of the measures in place, is working to be able to make them already available as early as this spring.

Costa cruises restarts: Costa’s program includes a total of more than 1,800 cruises from spring 2022 to winter 2022-23, allowing guests to discover 179 destinations around the world, with cruises lasting from 3 to 127 days.
All these cruises will feature the new product innovations the company has been working on in recent months, with an innovative range of shore excursions and an outstanding gastronomic offer featuring world-class chefs.

“We are seeing the growth in demand for holidays, and I am sure that this trend will increase further in the coming weeks” – said Roberto Alberti, SVP & Chief Commercial Officer of Costa Cruises. “We think our offer is the best ever, thanks to elements that combine unique experiences, both onboard and ashore. Our rich itinerary program suits for every need and includes some great new features, such as cruises to Turkey. Our cruise experience has been profoundly enriched and will allow guests to discover destinations in an authentic way, also thanks to extended stops in some ports. Furthermore, our guests will be able to enjoy their vacations on a fleet with latest generation ships, which combine sustainable innovation with entertainment, hospitality and well-being”.

After Costa Toscana, Costa cruises restarts program includes Costa Favolosa on April 28, with “mini cruises” in the Mediterranean, Costa Venezia on May 1 from Istanbul, with a new and unique one-week itinerary in Turkey and Greece, and Costa Smeralda on May 7, offering a one-week itinerary in the western Mediterranean. Costa Pacifica will resume operations on June 4 from Bari, exploring Greece and Malta.  The two-week cruises to the Canary Islands and the Azores, originally planned with the Costa Pacifica in April and May, will be carried out by Costa Luminosa, while Costa Fortuna will return operating in Northern Europe on June 12.

After the winter season in South America, Costa Diadema will also return to the Mediterranean, offering a cruise to Lisbon on May 5, as well as Costa Fascinosa, which will be leaving on May 1 for a cruise to the Azores, dedicated to Costa Club members. Back from the Caribbean, Costa Deliziosa will resume her Mediterranean cruises from April 15, while Costa Firenze, having completed her season in Dubai, will be positioned in Genoa on April 7, to begin her program of cruises in Spain, Italy and France.

In summer 2022, the sister ships Costa Smeralda and Costa Toscana, powered by liquefied natural gas, together with the Costa Firenze, will offer week-long cruises in the western Mediterranean, while Costa Venezia will continue with her new itinerary in Turkey and Greece, departing from Istanbul. Costa Pacifica, Costa Deliziosa and Costa Luminosa will be operating in the Eastern Mediterranean with one-week cruises.  Four ships, Costa Fortuna, Costa Favolosa, Costa Fascinosa and Costa Diadema, will be deployed in Northern Europe, visiting the Baltic capitals, the Norwegian fjords, the North Cape and Iceland.

The ships of the Costa fleet will take guests to discover the most beautiful destinations in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe in safety, thanks to the Costa Safety Protocol, the health protocol developed by the company together with scientific experts and the authorities.

In 2021 we safely recorded on our ships more than 1.5 million passenger movements, achieving a truly unique and exceptional record considering the context in which we operated. We also reached previously unprecedented levels of customer satisfaction, thanks to the efforts and investments we have made since the restart of our operations. I am confident that the return to free shore excursions, which we are planning for next summer and which we hope can be anticipated as early as next spring, will be an extra incentive to choose a Costa cruise” – added Roberto Alberti.

Costa’s program will be rich and complete also in winter 2022-23. Costa Firenze will be deployed on week-long cruises to the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman, departing from Dubai. Costa Venezia will be operating from Istanbul, with 11-day cruises to Turkey, Israel and Egypt, while Costa Diadema will be offering two-week cruises to the Canary Islands, calling also in Lisbon. Costa Pacifica and Costa Fascinosa will be visiting the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. Costa Smeralda will be offering one-week cruises in the western Mediterranean. Costa Toscana, Costa Favolosa and Costa Fortuna will be positioned in South America.

From next winter, Costa’s grand voyages will also be back. Costa Deliziosa will be offering the Around the World cruise, departing from Venice on January 6, 2023, or from Savona January 11, 2023. The itinerary will take guests to India and the Maldives, then to South Africa and Namibia, and then to South America, up the continent’s Pacific coast, through the Panama Strait and even visiting New York before returning to Europe.  The Costa Luminosa Grand Cruises will be equally spectacular, departing from Genoa on 8 January 2023 and from Buenos Aires on 27 February 2023, going from the Mediterranean to Tierra del Fuego and back, sailing up the Amazon River to Manaus.

Costa Serena’s program to resume cruising in Asia in 2022 will be announced over the next few weeks.

WTTC US travel and tourism recovery will exceed pre-pandemic levels in 2022

WTTC US travel and tourism recovery

February 15, 2022 – WTTC US travel and tourism recovery :  WTTC research projects sector’s GDP contributions could reach almost $2 trillion, a 6.2% increase from 2019, with Easter and summer travel bookings helping bolster economic recovery

WTTC US travel and tourism recovery

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which represents the global Travel & Tourism sector, today announced its latest economic modeling projecting that U.S. Travel & Tourism could rebound strongly this year, reaching almost $2 trillion in U.S. GDP contribution and exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 6.2%.

News of the strong recovery follows steady gains in the sector during 2021 and signals the welcome comeback of one of the world’s most important economic drivers after almost two years of upheaval.

“Our latest forecast shows the recovery significantly picking up this year as infection rates subside and travelers continue benefitting from the protection offered by the vaccine and boosters,” said Julia Simpson, President & CEO of WTTC. “As travel restrictions ease and consumer confidence returns, we expect a welcome release of pent-up Travel & Tourism demand. That, together with what we hope will be a strong consumer-led economic recovery, creates a positive outlook for the sector.”

STRONG RECOVERY OUTLOOK ANTICIPATED BY WTTC AND OXFORD ECONOMICS

Projections by WTTC and Oxford Economics show that if the vaccine and booster rollout will continue at pace, and restrictions to international travel continue to be eased around the world throughout the year, the sector’s contribution of nearly $2 trillion to the U.S. economy could outperform 2019 levels ($1.87 trillion) by more than six percent. Other findings include:

  • U.S. domestic Travel & Tourism spending is forecast to reach more than $1.1 trillion for the year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 11.3%
  • International traveler spending in the U.S. could see growth of $113 billion, compared to 2020, reaching nearly $155 billion, slightly below (14%) 2019 levels
  • Employment in the sector could also surpass pre-pandemic levels, reaching nearly 16.8 million jobs, above pre-pandemic levels by almost 200,000 jobs

“The good news is our outlook delivers a clear message: If the right conditions exist, the Travel & Tourism sector can rebound to deliver economic and employment benefits we have not seen since before the pandemic,” said Simpson. “We encourage global leaders to consider the economic and employment benefits of boosting consumer confidence by allowing fully vaccinated travelers to move freely.”

RELATED STUDY ALSO PROJECTS STRONG SECTOR RECOVERY IN 2022

New research by ForwardKeys, the leading travel data and analytics company and WTTC’s knowledge partner, has revealed inbound bookings to the U.S. over the Easter period have increased by 212% compared to the same period last year. Similarly, the latest data shows international inbound bookings to U.S. destinations during the busy Easter period have surged 130%, compared to 2021 levels.

Robust U.S. travel bookings could continue through the summer, with a 58% year on year increase in U.S. travel bookings already this year. Summer inbound international bookings will be similarly strong, increasing 87% year on year.

In 2019 Travel & Tourism generated 10.4% of global GDP and more than 334 million jobs worldwide. To reach close to pre-pandemic levels this year, WTTC urges governments around the world to continue focusing on the vaccine and booster rollout – and allowing fully vaccinated travellers to move freely without the need for testing.

The global tourism body also urges governments to replace the patchwork of restrictions for international travel with digital solutions that allow travellers to prove their status in a fast, simple and secure way.

UK lifts all restrictions before end of February

UK lifts all restrictions

February 10, 2022 – UK lifts all restrictions in two weeks time.

The Prime Minister intends to ditch all remaining Covid laws within a fortnight as unions criticised the move as going ‘too far, too soon’ and Government advisers warned of the ‘dangers’.

UK lifts all restrictions

The Prime Minister yesterday dramatically declared the final domestic restrictions – including compulsory self-isolation for the infected – will be axed before the end of February, provided the ‘encouraging’ trends in the data continue.

Covid infections are falling consistently and deaths are now in freefall, while the milder nature of Omicron, coupled with sky-high levels of immunity, mean the NHS never came under the levels of pressure that No10’s experts feared.

Ministers have repeatedly spoken of their plans to live with Covid like flu, paving the way for England to lead the rest of the world out of the pandemic phase. But the embattled PM’s statement yesterday – which was greeted with roars by Tory MPs in the Commons – has drawn criticism.

Current restrictions have left tens of thousands of Britons off work every day, with 80 per cent of the 70,000 people testing positive daily sticking to the rules that orders them to isolate for at least five days.

The rules caused one in 11 teachers to be off school due to the virus last week.
