Sports sector contributed $2.45bn to Dubai economy in 2021

Sports sector contributed $2.45bn to Dubai economy in 2021

September 20, 2022

The sports sector’s contribution to Dubai’s economy exceeded AED9 billion ($2.45 billion) in 2021, accounting for 2.3 percent of the emirate’s GDP for the year, said a senior official.

Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Sports Council (DSC), said the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, supported by a robust regulatory framework and an active lifestyle, has enabled the emirate to consolidate its position as the world’s preferred hub for sports in addition to being a destination for business, tourism, and education.

Chairing the third meeting of the DSC’s Board of Directors, he said the sector supports the creation of 105,000 job opportunities, accounting for 3.8 percent of the total employment in Dubai, said a Wam news agency report.

He credited Dubai’s pioneering regulatory framework and robust infrastructure for shaping the emirate’s sports sector. He noted that the government’s support for the industry is an integral priority within Dubai’s drive to become the world’s best city to live and work in.

“We are proud of the significant growth in the contribution of the sports sector to Dubai’s annual GDP. In addition to nurturing and fostering Emirati and expat athletes living in the UAE and ensuring the community’s health and happiness, the sports industry is now a significant economic contributor.

“At the DSC, we were keen to measure this growth in the contribution of sports to Dubai’s economy. In line with international best practices, we conducted a study in association with a major global consultancy. The study analysed and calculated the economic contribution of sports across different areas of the industry, including sports tourism, investment in sports training academies, sports events, and others,” Sheikh Mansoor said.

“The sports sector benefits from Dubai’s position as the world’s preferred destination for living, working, studying, and investing. The DSC supports the industry and the increase in its contribution to GDP by strengthening relations with international sports institutions and bodies. The council offers state-of-the-art facilities that support the work of local and international event organisers, which contributes to the growth of the sector.

“DSC encourages international sports stars and investors to take advantage of Dubai’s world-class facilities to open sports academies and host major world championships and training camps for various clubs, national teams and champion athletes, as well as to benefit from investment opportunities in its various fields. All these factors contributed to increasing the sector’s economic contribution and the number of employees in various related companies,” he added.

Dubai’s new sports strategy focuses on sports clubs in Dubai, infrastructure for sports facilities, e-sports, sports tourism, and sports technology, among others. It also identifies the main challenges, future development plans and strategy. The meeting also reviewed plans to develop football stadiums in Dubai and directed the concerned authorities to work on implementing them according to the approved schedule.

Hong Kong Sevens 2022 in less than 3 months – get ready for excellent Rugby

Hong Kong Sevens

Hong Kong Sevens 2022: everything we know with 3 months to go

September 9, 2022 – Hong Kong Sevens

  • Covid-19 restrictions will still be in place at Hong Kong Stadium, where a limit will be placed on capacity
  • There are still plenty of questions to answer ahead of the return of city’s flagship sporting event

The Hong Kong Sevens is finally coming back in November, after officials at the “highest levels” gave it the go-ahead this week.

Fans are set to descend on So Kon Po in their droves for the first time since April 2019, with the pandemic having frustrated the Hong Kong Rugby Union’s efforts to stage the city’s flagship sporting event.

But even though the Sevens is back, Covid-19 restrictions will still be in place at Hong Kong Stadium over all three days of action – and there are plenty of questions still to answer three months out.

Here’s a rundown of everything we know so far about the return of the Hong Kong Sevens.

Hong Kong Sevens 2022 – When does it take place?

The November 22 edition of the Hong Kong Sevens has been added as an additional 11th tournament at the start of the 2023 World Rugby Sevens Series.

Hong Kong will then get a second spot on the 2023 calendar in its traditional April slot next year.

How many fans will be there?

The 40,000-seat Hong Kong Stadium in So Kon Po will operate at an 85 per cent capacity over all three days.

That means 34,000 fans will be allowed in on each day – and they will have to be separated in the stands in groups of eight people.

Which teams will be coming?

There will only be men’s sides competing at this year’s Hong Kong Sevens, with no women’s competition or mini rugby.

All core Sevens Series teams, including South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Fiji, Ireland, USA, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, Samoa, Spain, Kenya, Canada, and Japan will be playing, plus Hong Kong – who will join the main competition, with no Challenger Series event scheduled.

Qatar to open three new five star hotels ahead of FIFA World Cup

Qatar to open three new five star hotels ahead of FIFA World Cup

September 06, 2022 –

Qatar is gearing up to open three new five-star hotels ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 as the country prepares to host more than a million international football fans for the world’s greatest football tournament.

Qatar five star hotels FIFA World Cup

With less than 100 days to go before fans descend on the region for the month-long event, which will kick off November 20, new hotels are opening their doors in the Gulf state – the host nation for the first-ever FIFA World Cup in the Middle East – in September and October.
They include the Wyndham Grand Doha West Bay Beach – a 278 -room resort near Doha Corniche – and the St. Regis Marsa Arabia Island on the Pearl-Qatar – a resort spanning a whole island, which will open on October 1.

A third – the Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha – is also slated to open in October near Hamad International Airport.

About 1.2 million fans, roughly half the population of Qatar, are expected to descend upon the country state during the event but providing sufficient rooms for visiting fans, teams and tournament staff has been a key challenge for Qatar and organizers have tried everything from cruise ships and desert camps to help ease the accommodation squeeze.

Berthold Trenkel, chief operating officer of Qatar Tourism, said the new hotels are in line with the country’s plans to expand its hospitality industry to fulfil the country’s ambitious goal of attracting more than six million international visitors a year by 2030.

“We are pleased to witness the continuous addition of world-class hotels to Qatar’s thriving hospitality landscape,” he said. “The exemplary service provided by our hotels plays a key role in the overall visitor experience, which in turn helps boost the tourism sector and diversify Qatar’s economy.”

“With new hospitality, cultural and retail offerings, Qatar continues to attract growing numbers of visitors each month, as demonstrated by our current summer season which sees peak figures compared to the past five years.”

The FIFA World Cup is expected to attract fans from 31 other nations to the country. Football fans have so far snapped up 2.45 million tickets to November’s World Cup in Doha, FIFA reported last month, which plans to make three million spots available in total.

What is Rugby?

Rugby is a contact team sport and one of the most popular sports in the world. The object of the game is to ground the ball behind the opponent’s try line, into what is called the in-goal area. Rugby is played both with the ball in hand and by kicking the ball.

The World Rugby organises the Rugby World Cup, which takes place every four years.

Rugby is played in many different variations, the most common being 15’s rugby, which simply means there are 15 players per team, with 2 teams playing against each other.

7’s – which is 7 players per team on the field, has also in the more recent years, become massively popular and was re-introduced in the 2016 Rio Olympics, as an official olympic sport.

F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022

February 21, 2022 – F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022

Fantastic news – the dates have been announced for the F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022. It will take place from June 10-12 this year. Spectators will be allowed.

The Grand Prix is one of the most challenging and punishing circuits on the F1 calendar, pitting drivers against some of the tightest corners and fastest straights around.

F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022

Initially held as the European Grand Prix in 2016, the Baku City Circuit hosted the first Azerbaijan Grand Prix a year later in one of the five street courses on the calendar in 2017.

Designed by architect Hermann Tilke, the circuit follows a series of right-angled turns into rapid flat-out sections which, before the introduction of new aerodynamics rules in 2016, pushed cars to speeds of over 360 km/h.

F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022:

Comparable to the tight twists of Monaco – in the way that the track forces drivers to both commit to each turn while being aware of the perils of straying too close to the edge – the Baku City Circuit has been the site of numerous high-speed crashes.

Charles Leclerc learned that the hard way in 2019 by crashing at Turn 8 in qualifying. The section is the tightest on the Formula 1 calendar, and sees the cars work their way around Baku’s UNESCO-protected old city walls.

Australia Formula 1

New Concept for Australia Formula 1 GP

Australia Formula 1

December 10 2021 –

In a bid to promote local tourism, the Australian Grand Prix event will feature zones showcasing the very best of Victoria.

The Australian Grand Prix will return in 2022, marking its comeback after two COVID-19 cancelled events.

As always, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) strives to improve the event and in 2022 will see the introduction of the precincts, designed to enhance the fan experience.

Throughout the four-day event, the venue will be divided into five separate fan precincts with each showcasing a different Victorian region or tourist destination.

Unlike the Australian Open at the start of the year, crowds will be able to move between the precincts.

Each of these areas will offer unique experiences in a bid to boost economic growth across the state as it begins to move on from its latest pandemic lockdown by promoting regional tourism and investment.

The precincts are as follows, Melbourne, Phillip Island, Grampians, Yarra Valley, and the Great Ocean Road – each will celebrate Victoria through entertainment, culinary and cultural experiences, all of which will be inspired by its specific region.

Australian Grand Prix Corporation General Manager of Marketing and Experience, Arthur Gillion expressed that there is real excitement about the event returning.

He believes the precincts will further bolster the positive fan experience.

“There is an incredible sense of excitement and anticipation ahead of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2022,” he said.

“These new fan precincts will not only showcase our wonderful state, but they will also provide a brand-new way to experience April’s event.

“We’ve been hard at work reimagining this year’s Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix and creating new and exciting fan experiences and cannot wait to see the world’s most exciting motorsport spectacle back to Victoria.

“Don’t miss your chance to live fast – Formula 1 is back!”

The 2022 edition of the Australian Grand Prix will see the debut of the tweaked circuit layout, designed to improve overtaking and action.

Visit Victoria CEO Brendan McClements believes there is no better state on earth to watch sporting events, particularly the Australian Grand Prix, and also thinks the precincts will add to the atmosphere.

“No one hosts a sporting and major event like Victoria, and the new fan precincts are a fantastic way to showcase the best of everything our state has to offer,” he said.

“From tasting tantalising food and renowned wine to music and live performance we want Formula 1 crowds to get a taste of Victoria’s vibrant and diverse scenes and be inspired to get out there and see the real thing for themselves.”

December 03 2021 –

Australian ‘Summer of Tennis 2022’ schedule announced, Australian Open from Jan 17

Tennis Australia announced its “Summer of Tennis” on Thursday, which would include a host of events across several states in the lead-up to the Australian Open 2022.

Ahead of the tournament, beginning officially on January 17, a total of 17 events will be held in the states of New South Wales (NSW), South Australia, and Victoria.

Among the warm-up tournaments announced was the ATP Cup, which was confirmed to be hosted by Sydney from January 1-9.

“There is no better place to kick off the season than in Australia and we look forward to seeing the fans out in force in January,” said ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi.

Other headline events include the Victorian Wheelchair open from January 8-12, and the Adelaide International women`s events beginning January 2.

Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley said the line-up was designed to create numerous competition opportunities for some of the best players in the world.

“It`s incredibly important to have the world`s best players competing across the country, inspiring the next generation of players and growing interest and excitement in our sport,” he said.

The series of events is set to be one of Australia`s largest international events since it closed its borders due to the pandemic and would be a boon for crippled local economies.

Tiley said the pandemic has created a “massive challenge” for the event: “It`s why we waited as long as possible to secure optimal conditions for the players and fans in as many locations as we could.”

The qualifying round for the Australian Open would run from January 10-14 and the main event would run from Jan 17-30.

Tennis Australia has previously announced that unvaccinated players would not be permitted to compete in the 2022 Australian Open.

SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX, JEDDAH 2022

JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA

Promoter of the event and chairman of the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation, Prince Khalid Bin Sultan Al Faisal, had previously made clear of his desire to have the event moved to an earlier date for 2022.

GPFans now understands this request to has been granted with tickets set to go on sale for a March date.

For the current season, only two races – Australia and Bahrain – were originally slated to take place that month.

“For us as a promoter we prefer to not be in the last races because teams can do really well in the first races and then the other races don’t become so interesting,” said Prince Khalid Bin Sultan Al Faisal in a media call when tickets went on sale for this year’s race.

“We wanted to have a race at the beginning (of the season), but the time that we had to do the work and prepare the track we couldn’t have a race in 2021 in the beginning of the year.

“So the question was, do we have a race at the end of 2021 or have an early race in 2022? And our decision was we wanted a race in 2021. We are now discussing with Formula 1 what is best for us and where to have our race in 2022.”

The motorsport and entertainment extravaganza will take place at Bahrain International Circuit from 18 to 20 March, and it will be the first of 23 rounds in the new season.

The 2022 race will be the fourth time that the Formula 1 season will start in Bahrain. The championship-opener was also previously held in Sakhir in 2006, 2010 and in 2021.

Bahrain produces exciting racing under lights and with a low spectator capacity of approximately 30,000 fans, the trackside experience is relaxed and well organized. Prices are relatively affordable, though have increased around 10-20% over the past few years. Beijing Winter Olympics – fully prepared for in civil aviation, security, snow making and broadcasting

blank

blank

Statements from various departments exhibit full preparation for and confidence in the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics, as authorities in civil aviation, public security and broadcasting, and teams for snowmaking and meteorology said they are fully prepared.

Beijing Winter Olympics

The Global Times learned from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on Wednesday that Beijing Capital International Airport will be the only official port of entry for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

The airport will use T3-D independent closed terminals as entry channels for international arrivals, and T3-C and T3-E terminals for international departures with closed-loop management, Sun Jianying, an official from the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, said on Wednesday.

From October 3 to November 9, a total of 85 flights related to the Olympics including 49 arrivals, 33 departures, and one freighter with a total of 2,380 passengers were processed with high efficiency and tight closed-loop control, data from the CAAC showed.

The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau said on Tuesday that the security work for the Winter Olympics has entered the competition stage.

Some of the venues for the Beijing Winter Olympics are conducting test events and taking on other events. Since October 4, the security team at the National Sliding Center has entered closed-loop management for security work, with staff manning their posts 24 hours a day and conducting daily safety checks.

“We use the test events as a practice ground for Winter Olympic Games security and work, according to the standards and requirements of the Games,” an officer from the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau said.

The snowmaking team, the most important supporting team for snow sports, will use high technology to produce high-quality and environmentally friendly snow for the Games.

Through numerous tests, the Beijing Winter Olympics snowmaking team established the territorial parameters of the Yanqing and Zhangjiakou competition areas to create “ice-like snow” adapted to the characteristics of Beijing’s continental monsoon climate.

In order to cope with possible extreme weather, the team experimented with early snowmaking, which is to make and store snow beforehand in low temperatures and use it in the following winter.

Meteorological security is another field that the organizing committee has stressed, Wang Gengchen, head of the research team for the Beijing Winter Olympics’ meteorological security, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

Since the venues of the Beijing Winter Olympics are scattered and some of them are located in the mountains, there is a big challenge to weather forecasting, Wang said.

“The Beijing Winter Olympics has set up an experts’ team specializing in meteorology, which is strictly adopting different forecasting strategies for different venues to guarantee meteorological security refinement.

“Currently, the meteorological security experts’ team has conducted several batches of drills and has been on standby.”

In late October, China Central Television (CCTV) launched a new channel, CCTV-16, which is specially dedicated to Olympics-related programs, including live broadcasts.

As of November 7, the channel had a cumulative audience of over 56.43 million viewers, and it is available in all 31 provincial-level regions in the Chinese mainland, covering nearly 300 million subscribers.

In terms of broadcasting, the channel uses advanced 5G, 8K and artificial intelligence technologies. Currently, it broadcasts other special quality programs, as well as social and cultural activities to warm up for the Winter Olympics.

China’s State Language Commission has created the world’s largest multilingual terminology corpus for the Winter Olympics, covering eight languages and including every term related to the competition events of the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics, the first of its kind in the history of language services for the Winter Olympics.

The Beijing Winter Olympics will take place from February 4-20, 2022 in Beijing, its Yanqing district, and neighboring Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province.

Qatar Tourism launches new campaign and continues its goal to welcome six million visitors by 2030

blank

Tuesday 26 October 2021

DOHA – Qatar Tourism has launched a new international multi-media campaign to drive forward the country’s tourism goals and cement its ambition to welcome more than six million visitors a year by 2030. The campaign features nine unique, engaging key chain characters designed to introduce travellers to the destination, which will roll out across 15 international core markets.

Under the tagline, ‘Experience a World Beyond’, Qatar Tourism will launch its latest development via a TV-led, multi-media campaign, featuring the voice of Indonesian singing sensation, Raisa. Six key chain characters introduce travellers to the variety of experiences that Qatar offers, with a further three, friendly local characters representing Qatari tour guides.

The global campaign is inspired by the insight that today, more than ever, international travellers want to engage in authentic experiences that will enrich their lives, rather than pose for the perfect Instagram picture. It brings to life that Qatar is an accessible introduction to the Middle East, blending cosmopolitan modernity and beautiful landscapes with Arabic traditions, cuisines and cultures.

Leading hospitality and travel safety is also at the heart of the campaign, as Qatar was named the world’s safest country by Numbeo’s 2020 Safety Index. Amongst the increasingly competitive Middle Eastern tourism industry, the uniquely friendly and familiar campaign is designed to stand out from the crowd, helping raise mass awareness of the country and its undiscovered potential.

The new advertising campaign reflects Qatar’s commitment to expanding its tourism proposition, in line with Qatar’s National Vision 2030. Qatar has already welcomed over two hundred thousand in-bound travellers since the country’s borders re-opened in July 2021.

A new website launched by Qatar Tourism, visitqatar.qa, is available in five languages and supported by a recently launched Personalised Travel Companion mobile app, designed to showcase the world-leading destination.

Qatar’s new tourism strategy puts the visitor at the heart of all new programmes and initiatives and will leverage the peninsula’s variety of existing experiences, while capitalising on a wave of new hotels, theme parks, shops and major leisure projects that have recently opened, or are set to launch, in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM.

To drive significant growth in annual international visitor arrivals, Qatar Tourism has appointed travel representative agencies in the eight key source markets in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, DACH (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland), Russia, China, India and the United States of America, as well as the addition of in-market sales managers in Australia and Turkey.

To aid knowledge and development for travel agents, Qatar Tourism’s travel agency training platform, TAWASH, has also been refreshed with a new interface design, content and training modules. The training platform supports Qatar’s mission to become a leader in Service Excellence. Designed to offer an improved learning experience, the upgraded programme functionality includes features such as interactive maps and knowledge check quizzes, alongside a new module structure to deliver an agile learning solution.

Agents can receive a ‘Qatar Expert’ certificate, which can be upgraded to ‘Qatar Specialist’ through completion of additional elective options. Learners who have already completed the former programme will automatically receive the ‘Qatar Expert’ level.

With the goal of raising tourism to 12% of GDP by 2030, Qatar will grow and improve assets and attractions, including the addition of 105 new hotels and serviced apartments to its extensive growing portfolio. The strategy will enhance the end-to-end customer experience and deploy a tailored marketing strategy to target point-to-point and stopover visitors.

Chief Operating Officer of Qatar Tourism, Berthold Trenkel, said: “As we work towards realising Qatar’s mission of becoming a world-class tourism destination, our international markets team will be the driving force in engaging key travel trade in key regions.

Our aim is to promote Qatar’s new value proposition to tour operators, online travel agencies and consumers. We welcome international travellers to the country to experience Qatar’s rich cultural heritage, unique hotels and resorts, incredible outdoor activities, beaches and multi-cultural culinary scene. In Qatar, visitors will truly Experience a World Beyond.”

Qatar is renowned for its warm hospitality and commitment to excellence, exemplified by its award-winning carrier Qatar Airways, which is the only airline to be voted World’s Best Airline six times by Skytrax. This is further complimented by the airline’s home and hub, Hamad International Airport, which was voted World’s Best Airport in 2021 by Skytrax. Such accolades further reinforces the country’s warm and hospitable reputation as it looks forward to welcoming tourists to the State of Qatar through a seamless journey.

VisitBritain reveals importance of football to tourism sector

blank

October 20, 2021

New research from national tourism agency VisitBritain demonstrates the increasing importance of football in driving inbound tourism to the UK and in boosting visitor spending.

A new report, published today, shows that overseas visitors who went to a football match spent £1.4 billion across the UK in total during their trip in 2019, up 84 per cent on the £742 million spent in 2011 when the research was last conducted.

There were 1.5 million visits to the UK in 2019 that included watching a live football match, up 66 per cent compared to 2011 when there were 909,000 visits.

Visitors who attended a football match also spent more and stayed longer, spending £909 per visit on average, 31 per cent more than the global visitor average of £696 in 2019, and staying ten nights compared to seven.

It is not just leisure visitors that enjoyed football matches.

Out of the 1.5 million who went to a football match during their stay, 94,000 were international business visitors.

Football also took the top spot in 2019 as the most popular live sporting event for international tourists to the UK.

“Football tourists boost local economies during the off-peak tourism season supporting restaurants, hotels and hospitality venues.

“I will continue to work closely with VisitBritain, the Premier League and the EFL to keep up this momentum.”

More than half of visitors who watched football during their trip also took time to see the famous monuments and buildings of the country and almost three-quarters included a restaurant meal.

They were also more likely than other inbound visitors to undertake these activities, underscoring the additional value football visitors bring to the economy.

Premier League chief executive, Richard Masters, said: “The Premier League and its clubs provide competitive football, featuring the world’s best players and managers, in front of brilliant fans.

“We are very proud of the positive impact the League has on both national and local economies.

“Seeing the competition in action is fantastic and we look forward to welcoming more international visitors to our stadiums in the future.”

The top three source markets for football-watching visitors in 2019 were the Irish Republic with 175,000 visits followed by Germany with 126,000 and the USA with 113,000.
