Saudia Arabia is also the largest country in the world without a river. Just over 95% of the country is desert or semidesert. But while there aren’t any rivers to speak of, it does have a sprawling coastline along the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea.

WTTC: Travel and Tourism could grow to $8.6 trillion in 2022

blank

WTTC

February 8, 2022 – WTTC –  Travel & Tourism could grow to $8.6 trillion in 2022, says WTTC

Major new research from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has revealed the global Travel & Tourism sector’s contribution to the global economy could reach $8.6 trillion this year, just 6.4% behind pre-pandemic levels.

In 2019, before the pandemic stopped travel in its tracks, the Travel & Tourism sector generated nearly $9.2 trillion to the global economy.

However, in 2020, the pandemic brought the sector to an almost complete standstill, causing a massive 49.1% drop, representing a severe loss of nearly $4.5 trillion.

Latest research from WTTC shows that as the world finally begins to recover from pandemic, the sector’s contribution to both the global economy and employment could reach almost pre-pandemic levels this year.

WTTC

Research by the global tourism body shows that if the vaccine and booster rollout continue at pace this year, and restrictions to international travel are eased around the world throughout the year – the sector could create 58 million jobs in 2022, to reach more than 330 million, just 1% below pre-pandemic levels and up 21.5% up on 2020.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Over the past two years, the global Travel & Tourism sector has suffered tremendous losses.

“2022 is poised for a strong recovery if governments continue to open up and remove restrictions to travel. Our sector could recover more than 58 million jobs and generate $8.6 trillion which would boost economic recovery around the world.

“As people start travelling again, governments must implement simplified rules, including the use of digital solutions. Travel of the future should be contactless while guaranteeing safety. “

In 2019 Travel & Tourism generated 10.4% of global GDP and more than 330 million jobs. To reach close to pre-pandemic levels this year, WTTC says governments around the world must continue focussing on the vaccine and booster rollout – allowing fully vaccinated travellers to move freely without the need for testing.

The global tourism body also urges governments to ditch the patchwork of restrictions and enable international travel using digital solutions that allow travellers to prove their status in a fast, simple and secure way.

With today’s announcement, the airline will have a fleet of eight modern, state of the art young aircraft at its Tirana base by this Summer. Wizz Air remains highly committed to the Albanian market and to offering great services, paired with low fares for passengers. Australia’s International borders to reopen on 21 February – fantastic news

blank

Australia’s international borders to reopen on 21 February

February 7, 2022 – Australia’s international borders to reopen on 21 February

Australia will reopen to all fully vaccinated visa holders on the 21 February 2021, meaning tourists, business travellers and other visa holders will finally be able to enter the country.

Announced today by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the change will be a welcome boost to the struggling tourism industry which in 2018/19 generated more than $60 billion for the Australian economy.

Australia’s international borders to reopen on 21 February

Under the revised border rules, all eligible visa holders will be able to enter Australia as long as they have received two doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration-recognised vaccine.

Those that have not will be subject to relevant state or territory quarantine requirements which differ nationally. In addition, unvaccinated travellers must provide proof of a medical reason that they cannot be vaccinated.

“I know the tourism industry will be looking forward to that,” PM Morrison said.

“Over the next two weeks they will have the opportunity…to be gearing up to welcome international visitors back to Australia.

“Our borders will be open from the 21st of February, and welcoming the world back to Australia.”

The change comes after the tourism industry’s peak bodies and business leaders called upon the Federal Government to ease international border restrictions – described by some as nonsensical.

Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said the new border rules will aid in the recovery of Australia’s tourism industry which has been particularly hard hit by a lack of international visitors.

“We all understand that the tourism industry in Australia has been dealt a tremendous load through COVID,” Andrews said.

“But as of the 21st of February we will be welcoming back to Australia international visitors and that is going to be such a welcome relief for many tourist providers all around Australia.”

The announcement has already been welcomed by major industry players including Flight Centre Corporate managing director Australia James Kavanagh, who called it an “absolute game changer”.

“This is a truly momentous day for businesses big and small – it is they who will lead this country’s economic fightback – and there is no doubt this is an absolute game changer when it comes to Australia being open to the world once again,” Kavanagh said.

“It has been a long time coming but the critical part is once we open to the world, we stay open, and that will naturally inject real confidence into people wanting to travel. Confidence is already rising in the leisure space across the world – now it is time for that happen in the corporate space.

“There is no doubt visas, exemptions, and quarantine have all been a big hindrance to the corporate world – and although we expect some meetings and events to still exist in a virtual of hybrid manner – now is the time to get on planes to see colleagues, clients, and potential new customers.”

The Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) said it was “ecstatic” at the international border reopening, noting the announcement gives “much-needed certainty to airports, airlines, tourism operators, and everyone involved in the international visitation industry”.

“More importantly, today is an extraordinary day for families and friends who have been apart throughout the pandemic, as they can now reunite on their own terms with their loved ones,” BAC said.

“After a challenging 24 months, BAC is more than ready to move forward with its partners to rebuild tourism across the state and reconnect Queensland to the world.”

Peak body Australian Tourism Export Council said the news means businesses can breathe a sigh of relief and begin rebuilding their markets.

“Australian tourism businesses will rejoice in the news that our borders will reopen to all international travellers on 21 February,” ATEC managing director Peter Shelley said.

“It’s been a long hard and desperate road for every tourism business across the country and we have lost many along the way, but this news will give those who have survived a clear target to work towards and a start point for the rebuilding of the industry.

“With close to two years with our borders closed our industry has lost tens of billions of dollars in export revenue and we welcome the border reopening as an opportunity to regain some of Australia’s tourism market share.”

He also said that the industry’s next challenge will be to meet demand successfully,  “and that will involve tourism businesses rebuilding their lost capacity, product, service skills and supply chains”.

“Given the tourism industry has taken a devastating hit to its skills base, experience, expertise and global sales networks, we urge the Government to outline a significant funding commitment to our industry in next month’s budget as a sign of its support for what has been a hugely valuable economic contributor for more than a decade,” Shelley said.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-inspired restaurant in London - new in Kew gardens

February 4, 2022 – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-inspired restaurant in London – new in Kew gardens

Here’s a venue for sweet-toothed restaurant-goers to get their teeth into – an eatery that’s inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-inspired restaurant in London – new in Kew gardens

Described as a mixture between the beloved Roald Dahl novel and a ‘nature-led laboratory’, the new Family Kitchen restaurant, situated in London’s Kew Gardens, is a ‘world of fantasy’.

The children’s writer is at the heart of the interiors – fixtures such as the zany mushroom sculptures and a giant apple chair are ‘inspired by fantastical worlds in literature such as Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach’.

The new Family Kitchen restaurant is a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-inspired ‘world of fantasy’ in London’s Kew Gardens

The ‘multi-sensory’ restaurant, which was designed by London-based Mizzi Studio and can accommodate up to 250 diners, is set beside the Children’s Garden

While Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory revolves around sugar, the mission of this restaurant goes a bit further, to ‘offer children an insight into plant types, local produce, agricultural techniques, food processing and meal preparation’. Interactive installations that teach families about the ‘origins of their food’ are dotted throughout the eatery.

The ‘multi-sensory’ restaurant, which was designed by London-based designers Mizzi Studio and can accommodate up to 250 diners, is set beside the Children’s Garden.

At the entrance, visitors are greeted by a ‘radiating LED sun’ on one wall. There are blue seats patterned with mosaics of waves, inspired by the work of Antonio Gaudi, and raincloud-shaped hanging lights suspended from the ceiling.

Denmark and Sweden and Norway drop covid rules

February 3, 2022 – Denmark and Sweden and Norway drop covid rules.

Almost all rules are non and void as of February 8 in Sweden and Norway. Denmark already opened up a few days ago. Denmark has lifted all of its domestic Covid-19 restrictions, including the wearing of face masks, making it the first European Union country to do so.

Nightclubs have reopened, late-night alcohol sales have resumed, and the Danish coronavirus app is no longer needed to enter venues.

While cases are still relatively high, the authorities say the virus no longer qualifies as a “critical threat”.

That is due to the country’s high vaccination rate, experts say.

Denmark and Sweden and Norway drop covid rules

Enough people have been vaccinated. In Norway the temporarily lock down has been removed.

Many other European countries are also opening up.

Ryanair

Dublin Schedule by Ryanair – largest schedule launched with 120 Destinations and over 900 Flights Per Week

Dublin Schedule by Ryanair

February 1, 2022  – Dublin Schedule by Ryanair – 120 Destinations & Over 900 Flights Per Week

Ryanair, Europe’s no.1 airline announced its largest ever summer schedule from Dublin Airport, with 120 destinations and over 900 weekly flights available for its Irish customers this summer. This record-breaking schedule, which includes fantastic sun getaways to Spain, Portugal, Italy, including Sardinia & Sicily as well as exciting destinations in the Greek islands, Croatia and regional France.

Dublin Schedule by Ryanair

Ryanair will also increase its investment with the basing of a 33rd aircraft at Dublin Airport this summer, representing a further $100m investment and bringing its total investment at Dublin Airport to $3.3bn. Ryanair also confirmed today that it will create 30 direct jobs as a result of this additional aircraft based in Dublin.

Dublin Schedule by Ryanair: With an additional 22 routes compared with Summer 2019 and over 900 flights departing to over 120 destinations every week, this increased connectivity will delivery much needed inbound tourism while also giving Irish holiday makers an abundance of travel choices to top European destinations like Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia and Portugal.

After 2 years of stop\start ineffective travel restrictions, the daa have finally been given the tools to incentivise travel with its Traffic Recovery Support Scheme (TRSS) which was recommended by the Aviation Task Force in their report of July 2020.

This investment by Ryanair in its largest ever Dublin schedule is a direct result of the recently launched Traffic Recovery Scheme by the daa.

With many airlines cutting capacity and routes this summer, Ireland must lower access costs as it competes with regions and airports in other EU countries for a diminished pool of airline carriers in Europe which will shrink total short haul seats in Europe by up to 15% this summer.

Dublin Schedule by Ryanair – Ryanair is the only airline in Europe adding capacity in significant volume with the delivery of 67 new Gamechanger Aircraft (delivering -40% noise emissions, -16% fuel emissions, +4% seats) before the start of summer 2022.

If Ireland is to hold on to this capacity and connectivity then the TRSS scheme must at a minimum be extended by the Government into the winter ‘22/23 season to ensure that Irish inbound tourism, particularly post summer, secures the capacity, connectivity and tourists which are vital to the growth of the Irish economy.

To celebrate this exciting announcement, Ryanair has launched a limited-time seat sale with fares available from just €29.99 for travel until the end of June 2022 and if your plans change so can your booking, with our zero-change fee offer.

These fares are sure to be snapped up quickly, so make sure to log onto Ryanair.com before midnight Sunday, 23rd January and make up for the lost summers of 2020 and 2021 with a well-deserved summer getaway.

Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president, development, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Hilton said, “Anglo American Hotel Florence is a stunning addition to Curio Collection by Hilton, joining almost 50 Curio Collection hotels trading or under development in Europe. Across the continent, we’re seeing growing owner interest in our Collection brands, which allow hotels to maintain an independent look and feel, while benefiting from Hilton’s commercial systems and global customer base. We look forward to welcoming guests in the historic centre of Florence.”

Westmont Hospitality Group added, “We are excited to strengthen further our relationship with Hilton following our highly successful collaborations both in Italy and around the world. Originally built in 1792 as one of the first hotels in Florence that has also hosted Leo Tolstoy and Maria Callas among its former guests, the fully renovated Anglo American Hotel Florence will retain its historic and elegant grandeur while enjoying the added consistency and global recognition of the Curio Collection brand.”

Hilton joins a strong consortium including US-based fund, Oaktree; Westmont Hospitality Group, a strategic investment partner and operator and Unicredit S.p.A., the project’s senior lending bank. The project is held by a newly established real estate investment fund managed by Milan-based Castello SGR, one of Italy’s premier real estate management companies. The renovation will follow the parties’ commitment to ESG investment, with a particular focus on sustainability. The main emphasis will be on the restoration of the property in keeping with its architecture and history; the restoration of original finishes and utilisation of existing materials will make up a key part of the sustainability strategy.

The hotel will feature distinctly local offerings in a stunning setting, exemplifying the Curio Collection flair for authentic, curated experiences. Situated in the historic city centre, two blocks from the famous Arno River in a tranquil neighbourhood of central Florence, the elegant hotel reflects the history and the charm of the city with romantic Tuscan shutters and a sun-drenched interior courtyard typical of classic Italian villas.

The hotel is also equipped with a bar, gym, and three meeting rooms able to accommodate up to 90 people.

The Florence train station is within walking distance from the hotel and connects the city through high-speed trains to Bologna, Rome, and Milan. The hotel is also located close to foreign consulates including the U.S., the Polimoda Fashion School and numerous corporate firms.

In addition, instant benefits include Digital Key, enabling Hilton Honors members to use their smartphone to book their stay, select their room, check in, and unlock their door.

Anglo American Hotel Florence, Curio Collection by Hilton will be located at Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, 9, 50123 Firenze FI, Italy. Hilton currently has two trading hotels in Florence, Italy, under Hilton Hotels & Resorts and Hilton Garden Inn.

Throughout Italy, Hilton has 39 hotels that are trading or under development including The Local Porto Rotondo, Curio Collection by Hilton and Baia di Chia Laguna Resort, Curio Collection by Hilton, both in Sardinia, and DoubleTree by Hilton Rome Monti, all of which opened this year.

January 31, 2022 – Qatar Airways new 4 weekly flights to Nigeria:

Doha, Qatar – Qatar Airways is boosting its service to Nigeria with the launch of four weekly flights to Kano (KAN) on 02 March 2022, and three weekly flights to Port Harcourt (PHC) on 03 March 2022, both operating via the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

The airline currently operates two daily flights to Lagos and four times a week to Abuja, which will expand to a daily service in March.

Qatar Airways new 4 weekly flights to Nigeria: Kano and Port Harcourt will become the seventh and eight new African gateways launched by Qatar Airways since the start of the pandemic. Both routes will be served by the state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner, featuring 22 seats in Business Class and 232 in Economy Class.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “The airline was one of the few to keep operating to many African destinations throughout the pandemic and, as restrictions are lifted, is continuing to expand its network on the continent. As home to the largest economy and population in the region, we see tremendous growth potential for travel and trade in Nigeria. It is a key market and an important part of our African growth strategy; the expansion of our presence across two new gateways is a testament to our continuous commitment to Nigeria.

“We anticipate good reciprocal demand between Port Harcourt, UK, USA and destinations across Asia. For Kano we see the opportunity to grow traffic to and from markets such as KSA and India, as well as strong cargo prospects.”

As travel restrictions ease, Qatar Airways is restoring its services to all its African destinations. When Kano and Port Harcourt flights start operating, the airline will provide 188 weekly flights to 28 destinations in Africa. Qatar Airways African customers will also benefit from generous baggage allowances, which provide for up to 46kg in Economy Class split over two pieces and 64kg split over two pieces in Business Class.
