Madeira enlarges Savage Islands marine sanctuary

Madeira Savage Island

January 07 2022 – Madeira enlarges Savage Islands marine sanctuary

The government of Madeira has announced that the marine reserve around the Savage Islands (Ilhas Selvagens) will be extended to 12 nautical miles.

The move will create the largest fully protected marine sanctuary in the whole of the Northern Atlantic and Europe.

The decision coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the declaration of the remote islets as a nature reserve, situated 280 kilometres south of the Madeiran mainland, off the coast of north-western Africa.

The nature reserve was one of the first protected areas in Portugal.

All species inside the reserve will be fully protected from fishing or other extractive activities.

Researchers from Oceano Azul have teamed up with the Waitt Foundation and National Geographic Pristine Seas to conduct scientific research, which back the needs for a reserve.

The waters around these islands are a vital passageway for migrating fish and mammals, while the waters near the islands’ shores provide essential nursery habitats.

The groups stressed the importance of the move, given that only under eight per cent of the ocean is currently protected.

It is hoped that this will inspire others in taking similar measures to preserve our oceans.

The Savage Islands are rugged and inhospitable, inhabited only by rangers.

They are an important nesting point for the Atlantic’s largest breeding colony of Cory’s Shearwaters and also home to the endemic Selvagens Gecko.

This announcement follows on from the recognition of Porto Santo as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2020, both on land and sea.

Ireland loosens requirements for vaccinated travellers

Tourism Ireland has welcomed a government decision to lift additional pre-testing requirements for travel to the destination.

The measures were initially introduced to combat the emergence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

Fully-vaccinated travellers will no longer need to take a pre-departure PCR test before entering the country.

The new regulations for entry into the Republic of Ireland are:

  • Vaccinated or recovered travellers into Ireland will be required to present evidence of a valid Digital Covid Certificate or other acceptable proof of vaccination/previous infection prior to travel.
  • Travellers who are not vaccinated or recovered will be required to present evidence of a not-detected RT-PCR test carried out no more than 72 hours before their arrival into Ireland.

Julie Wakley, Tourism Ireland head of Great Britain, commented on the change in restrictions: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome travellers back to Ireland without the need for pre-departure testing for fully vaccinated visitors.

“Hassle-free travel within the Common Travel Area has resumed and fully vaccinated visitors from Great Britain will be able to travel between GB and Ireland with no testing or quarantine required.”

All visitors to Ireland must complete a Passenger Locator Form.

Travel guidelines to Northern Ireland remain unchanged for visitors travelling from GB.

January 06, 2021 –

Six Senses will mark its entry into the United Arab Emirates’ market with a 60-room hotel and 162 branded residences along a private stretch of beach on Palm Jumeirah.

Six Senses the Palm, Dubai is set to open in late 2024.

Coral is the main inspiration for the architectural narrative, with the undulating rooflines, silhouettes, and cellular facades resembling its natural form and beauty.

This creates outward-looking environments that are shaded and protected from the sun.

As the popularity of tranquil beachfront locations grows, the Six Senses hotel and branded residences will offer a new dimension in community living, and further elevate the burgeoning real estate and hospitality sector.

The Majlis is a central part of Emirati life.

Community and ceremony will therefore be foremost at Six Senses the Palm, Dubai, enhanced by over 60,000 square feet of amenities.

Facilities include restaurants, bars, indoor cinema, pool, squash court, kids’ club, and games room, library, shared workspace, function and meeting rooms.

Another highlight of the resort is the central garden.

This naturally shaded landscape forms a series of mini jebels (hills), meandering valley paths, and romantic courtyards.

It will be a hub for activities including badminton, yoga, and football, all accessed via bridges, stepping-stone paths and tunnels wrapped in native beach planting.

The main pools and sun decks are banked by undulating native planting, which flows down to the beach.

Commenting on the announcement and the foray into the UAE market, chief executive of Six Senses, Neil Jacobs, said: “Six Senses the Palm, Dubai marks a new milestone for the brand as it enters this remarkable destination.

“From the bottom of the ocean to the signature rooftop bar, our concept celebrates the natural beauty of the Gulf, the solidarity and hospitality between host and visitors, and the journey that Dubai has been on, with its unique Emirati traditions and bubbling optimism for the future.”

January 06, 2021 –

Chicago’s vibrant hospitality scene will soon be boosted by the addition of a striking urban hotel close to the city’s Magnificent Mile.

A new landmark building

As part of its ongoing expansion efforts, Riu Hotels & Resorts has acquired a plot of land at 150 East Ontario Street in the bustling Streeterville neighbourhood, which has been earmarked for a major development. It’s envisaged that the four-star Hotel Riu Plaza Chicago will be housed within a newbuild skyscraper rising up to 28 storeys and comprising more than 350 guestrooms in total.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2022 and take approximately two years to complete. The building will be designed according to the Chicago School architectural style developed in the city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Luis Riu, CEO of RIU Hotels & Resorts, said: “We have been working to make this opportunity a reality for several years. It’s a dream location for any investor, right in the heart of the city.

“That’s why I’m so delighted to present this project, which has gone ahead despite numerous difficulties. Chicago is a great tourist destination that complements and enhances our range of urban hotels and strengthens RIU’s commitment to the United States, where we are about to open our fourth hotel, the Riu Plaza Manhattan Times Square.”

A growing network

The hotel will cater for both business and leisure travellers, offering a broad range of services in line with the rest of Riu Plaza’s portfolio. Its classic façade will be complemented by modern interiors and venues including a standout 26th-floor sky bar that’ll no doubt deliver impressive views across the Windy City.

Riu Hotels & Resorts will also soon open Riu Plaza Manhattan Times Square, increasing the size of the collection to nine properties. The brand currently has sites in Madrid, Panama City, Guadalajara, Berlin, Dublin, Miami, San Francisco and New York.

Moreover, the brand’s gearing up to enter the UK and Canada over the next few years. The group has acquired a building next to London’s Victoria station with plans to open a 435-key property there in 2023, while a 350-key hotel is on the horizon for Toronto.

What’s cooking in Portugal – Pastéis de Nata – Portuguese Custard Tarts

blank

What’s cooking? World recipes

what is cooking - recipe Israel Shakshuka

This pastéis de nata recipe makes as-close-to-authentic Portuguese custard tarts with a rich egg custard nestled in shatteringly crisp pastry. Tastes like home, even if you’re not from Portugal.

These Portuguese custard tarts are facsimiles of the true pastéis de Belém pastries from the Antiga Confeitaria de Belém (below), where they churn out more than 22,000 pastries each day. When you make that many a day, you get damn good at it. There are all kinds of reasons why the original pastéis de nata from this pastry shop are so freaking good. Secret recipes, teams of folks who do nothing but make the pastry dough or whip up the filling.

In order to translate the pastéis to the home kitchen and to ovens that that hit 500°F if you’re lucky, these pastéis are smaller than the original. and the tops may not brown quite as much as the authentic pastéis in the picture, which are from the confeitaria. Still, that hasn’t stopped the flood of rave reviews below. The secrets to making spectacular authentic Portuguese custard tarts at home are few and simple.

When making the pastry, make sure the butter is evenly layered, all excess flour is removed, and the dough is rolled very thin and folded neatly. As for the custard, you’ll need a thermometer to accurately gauge the custard. These are best eaten warm the day they’re made. Originally published June 26, 2004.–David Leite.

For the Dough:
For the Sugar Syrup:
For the Custard Base:

Directions

Instructions Checklist
  • Combine flour, salt, and cold water in a bowl. Mix with a wooden spoon until dough just comes together and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Dough should be sticky; adjust with more flour or water to achieve what’s shown in the video.

  • Transfer dough onto a well floured surface. Dust a little more flour over the top. Knead for a minute or two to form a round. Cover and let rest for 15 to 20 minutes.

  • Roll dough into a square about 1/8 inch thick, dusting with flour as necessary; dough should still be sticky.

  • Spread 1/3 of the butter over 2/3 of the square using a silicone spatula, leaving a 1/2 inch border. Flip the unbuttered side over the middle of the square and fold the opposite end over it like a letter. Straighten the edges as needed.

  • Turn dough with a bench scraper to unstick it from the counter; dust with flour. Flip and sprinkle more flour on top. Roll dough into a 1/8-inch-thick rectangle, carefully stretching edges as needed. Spread another 1/3 of the butter over 2/3 of the dough. Fold into thirds. Transfer onto a lined baking sheet and freeze until butter is slightly chilled, about 10 minutes.

  • Sprinkle dough with flour and roll into a square a little over 1/8 inch thick. Spread remaining butter over the dough, leaving a 1- to 1 1/2-inch border on the top edge. Dip your finger in water and lightly moisten the unbuttered edge. Roll dough into a log starting from the bottom edge. Dust with more flour and polish the ends as needed. Seal with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.

  • Combine sugar, 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon water, cinnamon, and lemon zest in a pot. Boil over medium heat, without stirring, until syrup reaches 210 to 215 degrees F (100 degrees C). Remove from heat.

  • Preheat oven 550 degrees F (288 degrees C). Grease a 12-cup muffin tin.

  • Whisk flour, salt, and cold milk together very thoroughly in a cold pot. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until milk thickens, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for at least 10 minutes.

  • Whisk egg yolks into the cooled milk. Add the sugar syrup and vanilla extract. Mix until combined. Strain custard into a glass measuring cup.

  • Unwrap the dough and trim any uneven bits on the ends. Score log into 12 even pieces using a knife; cut through.

  • Place a piece of dough in each muffin cup. Dip your thumb lightly in some cold water. Press thumb into the center of the swirl; push dough against the bottom and up the sides of the cup until it reaches least 1/8 inch past the top. Fill each cup 3/4 of the way with custard.

  • Bake in the preheated oven until the pastry is browned and bubbly, and the tops start to blister and caramelize, about 12 minutes. Cool tarts briefly and serve warm.

Hyatt Centric opens in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighbourhood

January 05, 2021 –

This lifestyle hotel offers travellers a stylish base featuring a strong F&B programme and interiors inspired by the local artistic heritage.

Locally inspired design

Hyatt Hotels Corporation has announced the debut of its new lifestyle hotel bordering Lenox Square, Hyatt Centric Buckhead Atlanta. The 15-storey building accommodates 218 guestrooms in total, including seven suites.

This exciting project was developed by Songy Highroads, with design by Sawyer & Company in tandem with The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry.

Creating a duality between public and private areas, the designers took inspiration for the interiors from Georgia’s pottery heritage, integrating nods to earthenware through the colour scheme, graphics and textures. A floral stencilled wall, woven pendant light installation and terracotta wall further distinguish the reception area.

Moreover, award-winning Canadian artist Claire Desjardins created a three-part installation for the property, and the exterior walls feature the work of artist Lenia Castro of Buckhead Murals.

Space to connect and unwind

The hotel’s guestrooms continue this artistic theme with wallpaper featuring the pattern of crackled glaze on pottery, and rugs encapsulating the shape and hues of earthenware. Meanwhile, headboards incorporating a chevron fabric pattern reflect the neighbourhood’s reputation as a fashion hub.

Each spacious room and suite comes with 10 ft-high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows for views over Atlanta and amenities including LCD HDTVs, cosy hooded bathrobes and Beekind socially conscious bath amenities. Guest facilities within the property include a fitness centre with Peloton bikes and panoramic views, plus an outdoor heated plunge pool and sun deck.

The hotel’s two dining concepts were created by James Beard Award-winning chef and author Hugh Acheson, along with the owner of Root Baking Co and Pizza Jeans, Christopher Wilkins.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is offered at the ground-floor Montréal-style steakhouse Mount Royal, featuring a steel entrance archway, a textured stone and aged bronze bar, wraparound floor-to-ceiling windows, an outdoor terrace and a firepit with glass mosaic mural. And the indoor-oudoor Spaceman lounge hosts guests on the 15th floor, with shareable plates and craft cocktails accompanied by an overhead sculpture that creates a halo effect at sunset.

Events will be hosted in the second floor’s 3,700 sq ft meeting space, in which each room is decorated with accent wall coverings and works of art, and benefits from the inclusion of a built-in wet bar, intuitive technology, lounge seating and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Israel travel

January 04 2022 -travel: Likely no more red countries by next week – health official

at the moment, the US, the UK and several other nations are still classified as red, with severe limitations on traveling to and from Israel.

By next week, there most likely won’t be any more red countries, Ilana Gens, head of the Health Ministry’s Public Health Services headquarters, told the Knesset Law and Constitution Committee.

At the moment, the list of red countries due to COVID-19 includes the US, the UK, the UAE, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria and Turkey.

“We estimate that next week, the list will remain empty because the model is relative and we are considering the ratio with morbidity in the country and also the incidence of morbidity from abroad on general morbidity,” she said, noting that as the impact of cases imported from abroad becomes less significant, there is less epidemiological justification in restricting travel.

Starting from Sunday, vaccinated tourists from non-red countries will be able to enter Israel.

IHG to create first upscale international hotel in Vinh Yen – Vietnam

Crowne Plaza’s portfolio will soon be bolstered by the addition of a contemporary 170-room property in northern Vietnam.

A hotel that draws on local inspiration

Aiming to make its debut in 2022, Crowne Plaza Vinh Yen City Centre is the result of a new management agreement signed between IHG and Bao Quan Co. On opening, the 170-key scheme will accommodate guests at the heart of Vinh Yen in design-led spaces taking inspiration from local heritage and culture.

Serena Lim, vice president of development in Southeast Asia and Korea for IHG, said: “It’s fantastic to partner Bao Quan Co to bring the Crowne Plaza brand to Vinh Yen. The Covid19 pandemic has shifted the future of work, and the future of meetings, blending work and leisure needs. The desire for human connection is stronger than ever as travellers look to rebuild professional and personal relationships.

“This hotel, with its convenient location and Crowne Plaza’s work / life blend experience, is ideally placed to act as both the centre of the community and the venue where everything happens. Modern travellers and visitors will benefit from the hotel’s design, which offers a seamless transition between work and downtime. It also complements IHG’s strategy to support the governmental masterplan to grow in industrial locations.”

Flexible spaces suitable for corporate travellers

The hotel will reflect the Crowne Plaza brand’s new concept, focusing on the evolving demand for flexible spaces. Corporate travellers will be catered for by the brand’s signature Plaza Workspace lobby, an executive lounge, a business corner and agile workspace, while events will be hosted in multifunctional rooms – including an 850 sq m ballroom.

Guestrooms will be designed according to the WorkLife concept, with a quarter designed as large-format suites with kitchenettes for both long and short stays. On top of this, guests will be able to make use of two drinking and dining venues, a Club Lounge, a spa, an outdoor pool and a fitness centre.

The hotel is conveniently located just 30 minutes from Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport, and provide access to the rest of Vinh Phuc, one of the largest industrial provinces in Vietnam. This region will host part of the rescheduled 2021 Southeast Asian Games in May 2022. Nearby tourist sites include Tam Dao National Park, Truc Lam An Tam Zen Monastery and several highly rated golf courses.

Bui Xuan Trung, chairman of Bao Quan Co, said: “We chose to partner with IHG for our first venture into hotel management due to their strong local presence in Vietnam, as well as their truly global scale, enterprise and systems. Their team has been sensitive to our needs as we enter the final build stage and, together, we have made cost-effective tweaks to the existing design to bring the Crowne Plaza brand to life, while accentuating the business and meetings focus of the hotel.”

Dubai welcomes new Hyatt Centric hotel

The Hyatt Centric brand is offering a fresh spin on the modern lifestyle hotel with Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Dubai.

Encapsulating the spirit of Dubai

Lifestyle hotels typically aim to channel the essence of their location to create a unique guest offering and this certainly seems to be the case at Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Dubai. An exciting milestone for Hyatt Hotels Corporation, this property represents the inaugural Middle Eastern site for its prolific lifestyle brand.

Occupying a prime position in the La Mer district, the seven-storey hotel features 173 guestrooms, including no fewer than 27 deluxe rooms and suites.

Britta Leick-Milde, the hotel’s general manager, said: “Surrounded by the ocean with year-round sunshine and a stunning aesthetic, we are proud to introduce the tenth Hyatt-branded hotel in Dubai and to bring the first Hyatt Centric hotel into the UAE. With stunning views of the entire Dubai skyline, Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Dubai offers adventure-seeking travellers a window to the destination through a playful interpretation of local culture, art and points of interest.”

Casual, fun and playful

Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Dubai promises to provide an exciting new offering for the emirate – a lifestyle hotel that boasts a casual, fun and playful approach to hospitality.

Guestrooms are kitted out with modern amenities, livened up with splashes of colour in the form of patterned rugs, carefully curated artworks and intricate textiles. There’s also plenty for leisure travellers to do during their stay, not least visiting Laguna Waterpark, La Mer’s beachfront shopping and entertainment district, Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, or exploring the souks in the Satwa, Bur Dubai and Al Fahidi neighbourhoods.

The hotel’s also seeking to position itself as a social hub in its own right – and offers a range of F&B options for guests to choose between, from an all-day dining restaurant and shisha lounge to a lobby lounge and pool bar. Other noteworthy facilities include flexible meeting spaces, large terraces, a state-of-the-art spa and a 24-hour fitness centre, while visitors can feel like VIPs by sunbathing in a dedicated private area on La Mer’s beach.

(or any time of day)  and other parts of the Middle East and North Africa. It’s a simple combination of simmering tomatoes, onions, garlic, spices and gently poached eggs. It’s nourishing, filling and one recipe I guarantee you’ll make time and again.

Make our easy shakshuka for a comforting brunch. Vary this dish by flavouring the simple tomato sauce with whatever you have to hand – curry powder, pesto or fresh herbs

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 red onions, chopped
  • 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, sliced
  • small bunch coriander stalks and leaves chopped separately
  • 2 cans cherry tomatoes
  • 1 tsp caster sugar
  • 4 eggs

Method

  • STEP 1

Heat the oil in a frying pan that has a lid, then soften the onions, chilli, garlic and coriander stalks for 5 mins until soft. Stir in the tomatoes and sugar, then bubble for 8-10 mins until thick. Can be frozen for 1 month.

  • STEP 2

Using the back of a large spoon, make 4 dips in the sauce, then crack an egg into each one. Put a lid on the pan, then cook over a low heat for 6-8 mins, until the eggs are done to your liking. Scatter with the coriander leaves and serve with crusty bread.

December 17, 2021 –

Spain’s gastronomic hotspot Nobu Hotel and Restaurant San Sebastián

Nobu Hospitality, the global lifestyle brand founded by Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro, and Meir Teper, announces its fourth Spanish hotel and restaurant – Nobu Hotel and Restaurant San Sebastián.

With a strong focus on cuisine, local culture, and architectural design combined with an air of celebrity, Nobu may have met its match in San Sebastián.

As the capital of Gipuzkoa, this is a city with the most Michelin stars per square meter than anywhere else in the world, the site of Balenciaga’s first atelier, and a place that Hemingway fondly called home while writing ‘Fiesta’. A true culinary mecca, the mountainous Basque Country’s culture is reflected throughout the coastal town, where visitors are invited to hop from bar to restaurant while sampling bitesize gastronomy referred to locally as pintxo.

Overlooking La Concha Bay, Nobu Hotel and Restaurant San Sebastián is scheduled to open in March 2023, with 20 luxuriously designed guest rooms and suites and a 98-seat Nobu restaurant offering panoramic water and city views. The fully renovated hotel sits on the site of the famed Palacio Vista Eder, constructed in 1912 and designed by renowned Spanish architect, Francisco Urcola.

Partnering with Nobu Hospitality on the new opening is Millenium Hospitality Real Estate SOCIMI (“MHRE”). With an existing collection of five-star hotels peppered throughout Spain and Portugal, MHRE’s strategy places an emphasis on the careful selection of properties and their location. Based on generating value by acquiring and repositioning hotel assets, MHRE is managed by a multidisciplinary team of prestigious professionals with extensive experience in hotel investment, boasting a large portfolio of assets both under operation and in the process of being repositioned.

Javier Illán Plaza, President and CEO of Millenium Hospitality Real Estate states, “The partnership with Nobu Hospitality and launch of Nobu Hotel and Restaurant San Sebastián further places the region on the map as the ultimate gourmet hotspot. I’m thrilled to be working with the brand to make this opening one of the country’s most exciting for 2023, which will be embraced by residents and visitors alike.”

Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro, and Meir Teper state, “San Sebastián is an exciting location for the brand as good quality food is intrinsic to the destination. We’re so pleased to be partnering with Javier Illán Plaza on this project and to be opening our fourth hotel and restaurant in Spain, bringing the Nobu cuisine to a new audience of residents and travellers.”

Trevor Horwell, Chief Executive Officer Nobu Hospitality comments, “We are truly honored to be entering the city of San Sebastián, well known for its cultural diversity and a beacon of gastronomic excellence in Spain.  The Nobu Hotel and Restaurant San Sebastián are crafted on the tremendous vision of our partner, Millenium, to create a very special hospitality experience.  We look forward to becoming a part of the local community whom we hold in such high regard.”

ITB Berlin

Messe Berlin adjusts its concept for ITB Berlin 2022

November 16 2021 –27 – ITB Berlin is the world’s largest travel trade fair

The World’s Leading Travel Trade Show

With great regret we have to inform you today, that the in-person edition of ITB Berlin 2022 will not take place as originally planned. Owing to the latest developments and accompanying directives as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Messe Berlin is unable to afford its exhibitors and partners the necessary planning certainty with the holding of an in-person ITB Berlin in early March. The current situation surrounding the pandemic, as well as the tightened travel restrictions and limits imposed on the numbers that can take part in large events made Messe Berlin take this step.

We made every effort to make it possible to hold ITB Berlin as an in-person event again in the German capital. Particularly in these times, the industry needs orientation, inspiration and dialogue. With the livestreamed convention and Digital Business Day as well as our new regional travel events during the year, we are offering the industry a wide range of fascinating content and new business opportunities in 2022.

In March 2023 ITB Berlin will be back again with an in-person event. ITB Berlin 2023 will open on 8 March and in accordance with the wishes of all market players will take place on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds.
