February 8, 2022 – Frédéric Deleuze, a former Airbus engineer, intends to transform an Airbus A380 aircraft originally planned for dismantling into a luxury hotel. The hotel will be placed in the airport’s northern terminal at Toulouse-Blagnac (TLS).

Airbus A380 To Be Converted Into A Luxury Hotel

The future hotel will contain 31 rooms, two of which will be suites. Three accommodation kinds will be available in the fuselage: ordinary rooms for two people, deluxe rooms for three or four guests, and suites.

One suite room will be placed in the A380 cockpit, while the other will be located at the back of the plane on two floors linked by the original staircase.

The hotel complex will also have a 60-seat restaurant with a patio overlooking the largest passenger jet.

When he learnt that some old Airbus A380s were being scrapped, Frédéric Deleuze, who worked as an engineer at Airbus for 15 years, came up with the idea of upcycling the Airbus A380 into a hotel.

Several historic planes have been rescued from aviation graveyards. British Airways said in 2020 that it would convert its final Boeing 747 aeroplane into a theatre and educational facility for kids. In 2021, Emirates recycled its retired Airbus A380 into aviation collectibles.

WTTC: Travel and Tourism could grow to $8.6 trillion in 2022

blank

WTTC

February 8, 2022 – WTTC –  Travel & Tourism could grow to $8.6 trillion in 2022, says WTTC

Major new research from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has revealed the global Travel & Tourism sector’s contribution to the global economy could reach $8.6 trillion this year, just 6.4% behind pre-pandemic levels.

In 2019, before the pandemic stopped travel in its tracks, the Travel & Tourism sector generated nearly $9.2 trillion to the global economy.

However, in 2020, the pandemic brought the sector to an almost complete standstill, causing a massive 49.1% drop, representing a severe loss of nearly $4.5 trillion.

Latest research from WTTC shows that as the world finally begins to recover from pandemic, the sector’s contribution to both the global economy and employment could reach almost pre-pandemic levels this year.

WTTC

Research by the global tourism body shows that if the vaccine and booster rollout continue at pace this year, and restrictions to international travel are eased around the world throughout the year – the sector could create 58 million jobs in 2022, to reach more than 330 million, just 1% below pre-pandemic levels and up 21.5% up on 2020.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Over the past two years, the global Travel & Tourism sector has suffered tremendous losses.

“2022 is poised for a strong recovery if governments continue to open up and remove restrictions to travel. Our sector could recover more than 58 million jobs and generate $8.6 trillion which would boost economic recovery around the world.

“As people start travelling again, governments must implement simplified rules, including the use of digital solutions. Travel of the future should be contactless while guaranteeing safety. “

In 2019 Travel & Tourism generated 10.4% of global GDP and more than 330 million jobs. To reach close to pre-pandemic levels this year, WTTC says governments around the world must continue focussing on the vaccine and booster rollout – allowing fully vaccinated travellers to move freely without the need for testing.

The global tourism body also urges governments to ditch the patchwork of restrictions and enable international travel using digital solutions that allow travellers to prove their status in a fast, simple and secure way.

February 8, 2022 – Wizz Air – new routes from Albania

2 NEW ROUTES FROM TIRANA
4 NEW ROUTES FROM KUKËS

Wizz Air, Europe’s fastest growing and greenest airline announced today the allocation of two new aircraft to its Tirana base. The new Airbus A320neo will join the fleet, enabling the start of two new routes from Tirana to Friedrichshafen and Rimini. As a result of that investment. The airline will also start operations to and from Kukës International Airport to Vienna, Memmingen/Munich West, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden and Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. The new low fare routes are already on sale on www.wizzair.com and via the WIZZ mobile app with fares starting as low as EUR 19.99.

Wizz Air – new routes from Albania

Wizz Air started operations in Albania in April 2017 and has carried over 500,000 passengers over four years of successful operations. With today’s announcement, the airline will have a fleet of eight modern, state of the art young aircraft at its Tirana base by this Summer. Wizz Air remains highly committed to the Albanian market and to offering great services, paired with low fares for passengers. The airline is adding the new Albanian airport Kukës to its network with four new routes. The newly allocated capacity of over 784,000 seats per year will further contribute to the Albanian aviation market and to the creation of 84 new direct jobs with Wizz Air and 588 local jobs in the associated industries**. Together with the six new routes, Wizz Air now offers 42 routes to 13 countries from Tirana.

Wizz Air continues to ramp up recruitment in Albania as it looks to hire more cabin crew from its Tirana base. The airline will be hosting a series of cabin crew recruitment events on 11, 18 and 28 February in Tirana and eight additional events across the country. Wizz Air welcomes applications from experienced cabin crew, as well as those with no previous experience at all. The airline’s industry-leading training lasts between four and six weeks, depending on experience, and new recruits will benefit from being paid a salary during the entire training period. More information about job opportunities in Wizz Air can be found on careers.wizzair.com.

Speaking at the press conference József Váradi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air, said: “Today brings great news for Albanian travellers and those who wish to visit the country. We are announcing more aircraft in Tirana, more travel opportunities with adding Kukës to Wizz Air’s network, more low fare routes, as well as more jobs, and our support to ramp up tourism in Albania.  Our modern aircraft, as well as our enhanced protective measures, will ensure the best possible conditions for travellers while operating the lowest environmental footprint. We look forward to welcoming passengers on board with great service, while we strive to become Europe’s greenest choice for air travel.”

Edi Rama, the Prime Minister of Albania, said: It is a special pleasure to find out that Wizz Air airline will start operating flights from Kukës Airport “Zayed – Wings of the North” towards European destinations. The new Kukës Airport was planned to be a low cost airport from the beginning, when this strategic investment was brought to life. Therefore, Wizz Air starting to fly from Kukës to Austria, Switzerland and two destinations in Germany is a very important news for Albanians who want to travel low cost. I believe that with the precious tradition the  company has established in the market, they will be able to offer passengers a pleasurable flying experience, as the modern Wizz Air planes take off from the lands in the north of Albania.

Ruby Hotels confirms top team additions as growth continues

In the first half of 2022, two hotels will open in Munich and Geneva, as well as a workspace in Vienna.

To support the ongoing internationalisation and diversification, Ruby is expanding its top management team.

Fabian Zellinger, who as group director is responsible for the Ruby Workspaces business segment, joins the management team and, at the start of the year, also takes over two newly created areas: new ventures and corporate development.

Both areas are aimed at the strategic international expansion of Ruby and include, among other things, the establishment of partnerships and joint ventures in new markets, as well as the development of new business areas and licensing concepts.

The Ruby Workspaces division, for which Zellinger will continue to be responsible, posted strong revenue and margin growth last year despite the challenges in the market.

The pipeline also continues to develop as planned.

In summer 2022, the Ruby Paul Workspace will open in Vienna’s first district with over 400 workspaces.

Additional workspaces in Stuttgart and Florence are already under construction.

To support the ongoing international expansion, Mark Braune also joins Ruby’s management team as group director revenue and distribution.

Revenue specialist Braune, who joins from HR Group.

Finally, Thomas Fink has been promoted to group director finance and administration.

In this newly created role, Fink and his staff are responsible for the continued automation and complexity reduction of accounting, payments, cash management and bookkeeping in order to efficiently handle international growth in the background.

Ruby currently employs 330 people.

By the end of 2023, the group plans to have around 680 employees across Europe, with a capacity of 3,576 rooms and more than 1,500 workspace desks.

Lithuania reopens

Lithuania reopens

February 7, 2022 – Lithuania has confirmed it is finally ready to welcome back travellers.

Lithuania reopens to European tourists

As of now, tourists from the European Union and European Economic Area will only need to prove they are vaccinated against Covid-19.

Paperwork to prove a traveller has recovered from Covid-19 or has tested negative will also be accepted, a statement said.

Lithuanian officials said it will also no longer be required to present a National Certificate (or another Covid-19-related document) to access indoor public spaces including tourist accommodations, restaurants, museums, sport or cultural event venues.

Only individual security measures, such as wearing masks or respirators indoors and distance-keeping are applied.

Before the pandemic, the tourism sector made up a significant part of the local economy, amounting to over €977 million in total spent every year.

The reopening decision followed the recent recommendation of the World Health Organisation to lift or ease travel restrictions because such measures may cause economic and social harm.

“These are big steps back to normality in the tourism sector.

“Statistics show that people’s desire to travel remains at a very high level all over the world.

“We are happy that Lithuania eases restrictions to be more open to foreign visitors because, especially this year, there is so much to see and experience in Lithuania and its biggest cities,” said Olga Gončarova, general manager of Lithuania Travel, the national tourism development agency.

British Airways has today announced that it will be introducing a new destination to its Heathrow short-haul network, Nuremberg, located in Bavaria, Germany.

Flights to this European city will initially operate four times a week from March 27. Nuremberg is Bavaria’s second largest city after Munich, and is well known for its cultural landmarks that draws visitors year round, so customers can stroll along the vibrant streets or cruise down the beautiful Danube river in the sunshine, as well as explore the spectacular Christmas markets during the festive season.

Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ Director of Networks and Alliances said: “After over 20 months of travel restrictions we know our customers are looking for new and exciting places to visit, so the addition of this route to our short-haul network ahead of the summer season is perfect timing for anyone who would like to plan their trips for the year ahead.

Australia’s International borders to reopen on 21 February – fantastic news

blank

Australia’s international borders to reopen on 21 February

February 7, 2022 – Australia’s international borders to reopen on 21 February

Australia will reopen to all fully vaccinated visa holders on the 21 February 2021, meaning tourists, business travellers and other visa holders will finally be able to enter the country.

Announced today by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the change will be a welcome boost to the struggling tourism industry which in 2018/19 generated more than $60 billion for the Australian economy.

Australia’s international borders to reopen on 21 February

Under the revised border rules, all eligible visa holders will be able to enter Australia as long as they have received two doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration-recognised vaccine.

Those that have not will be subject to relevant state or territory quarantine requirements which differ nationally. In addition, unvaccinated travellers must provide proof of a medical reason that they cannot be vaccinated.

“I know the tourism industry will be looking forward to that,” PM Morrison said.

“Over the next two weeks they will have the opportunity…to be gearing up to welcome international visitors back to Australia.

“Our borders will be open from the 21st of February, and welcoming the world back to Australia.”

The change comes after the tourism industry’s peak bodies and business leaders called upon the Federal Government to ease international border restrictions – described by some as nonsensical.

Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said the new border rules will aid in the recovery of Australia’s tourism industry which has been particularly hard hit by a lack of international visitors.

“We all understand that the tourism industry in Australia has been dealt a tremendous load through COVID,” Andrews said.

“But as of the 21st of February we will be welcoming back to Australia international visitors and that is going to be such a welcome relief for many tourist providers all around Australia.”

The announcement has already been welcomed by major industry players including Flight Centre Corporate managing director Australia James Kavanagh, who called it an “absolute game changer”.

“This is a truly momentous day for businesses big and small – it is they who will lead this country’s economic fightback – and there is no doubt this is an absolute game changer when it comes to Australia being open to the world once again,” Kavanagh said.

“It has been a long time coming but the critical part is once we open to the world, we stay open, and that will naturally inject real confidence into people wanting to travel. Confidence is already rising in the leisure space across the world – now it is time for that happen in the corporate space.

“There is no doubt visas, exemptions, and quarantine have all been a big hindrance to the corporate world – and although we expect some meetings and events to still exist in a virtual of hybrid manner – now is the time to get on planes to see colleagues, clients, and potential new customers.”

The Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) said it was “ecstatic” at the international border reopening, noting the announcement gives “much-needed certainty to airports, airlines, tourism operators, and everyone involved in the international visitation industry”.

“More importantly, today is an extraordinary day for families and friends who have been apart throughout the pandemic, as they can now reunite on their own terms with their loved ones,” BAC said.

“After a challenging 24 months, BAC is more than ready to move forward with its partners to rebuild tourism across the state and reconnect Queensland to the world.”

Peak body Australian Tourism Export Council said the news means businesses can breathe a sigh of relief and begin rebuilding their markets.

“Australian tourism businesses will rejoice in the news that our borders will reopen to all international travellers on 21 February,” ATEC managing director Peter Shelley said.

“It’s been a long hard and desperate road for every tourism business across the country and we have lost many along the way, but this news will give those who have survived a clear target to work towards and a start point for the rebuilding of the industry.

“With close to two years with our borders closed our industry has lost tens of billions of dollars in export revenue and we welcome the border reopening as an opportunity to regain some of Australia’s tourism market share.”

He also said that the industry’s next challenge will be to meet demand successfully,  “and that will involve tourism businesses rebuilding their lost capacity, product, service skills and supply chains”.

“Given the tourism industry has taken a devastating hit to its skills base, experience, expertise and global sales networks, we urge the Government to outline a significant funding commitment to our industry in next month’s budget as a sign of its support for what has been a hugely valuable economic contributor for more than a decade,” Shelley said.

February 04, 2022 – The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon will be The Standard brand’s flagship hotel in Asia and the latest addition to the company’s growing global portfolio. The company today announced that the hotel will open its doors to the public on 11th May 2022, and will begin taking reservations on February 4th.

The Standard to Open its Asia Flagship in Bangkok May, 2022

The hotel is conveniently located in Bangkok’s central business district between the Sathorn and Silom corridors and is housed in the landmark King Power Mahanakhon Building, a 78-story mixed-use building that is one of the tallest in Thailand. It is also in close proximity to Bangkok’s Old Town with its wealth of cultural attractions and what has recently become the chosen enclave for the city’s dynamic creative community. The hotel will reflect the unmistakable energy of the Thai capital and infuse The Standard brand’s “anything but standard” ethos throughout the property.

“There is nothing in Bangkok, or the entire region, like what we have created here,” said Amar Lalvani, Executive Chairman for Standard International. “We love the energy, style and culture Bangkok offers and couldn’t be more proud to partner with King Power to open our flagship for the region in this awe inspiring building, in this incredible city. When we open our doors in May, visitors and locals will be treated to the world of immersive hospitality that only The Standard can create.”

With 155-rooms, The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon will become the brand’s flagship property in Asia. The hotel is designed by Spanish artist / designer Jaime Hayon in collaboration with The Standard’s award-winning in-house design team. The vibrant colors, fluid shapes, evolving art installations and lush greenery that flows seamlessly inside and out mark a sharp aesthetic departure from other luxury hotels in the city.

In addition to thoughtfully appointed guest rooms and suites, the hotel will feature an outdoor terrace pool (with the vibrant pool scene for which The Standard is known), the most advanced gym in Bangkok offering memberships to the local community and meeting / event rooms. As with all Standard hotels, there will be a dynamic array of restaurant, lounge, bar and nightlife offerings including the first international outpost of the renown Standard Grill and Thailand’s first outpost of the acclaimed Mott 32. In addition to the restaurants themselves, The Parlor will be a constant hub of music and activity offering snacks and cocktails while the fantasy filled tea room will offer treats found nowhere else in Bangkok. The rooftop will house Ojo, a Mexican inspired restaurant directed by one of the finest young chefs in Mexico. Visitors will also have access to sweeping views of the city from the highest al fresco sky beach in Bangkok. On the ground floor, the shop will carry a highly curated collection of local and foreign fashion, travel and home goods as well as one of a kind collaborations. All of it will live up to The Standard’s promise to be anything but.

This breath-taking new addition to The Standard’s portfolio will sit proudly alongside the brand’s award-winning US and European flagships, The Standard, High Line, and The Standard, London and in perfect counterpoint to The Standard’s waterside retreats in Miami, the Maldives, and Hua Hin, and it’s forthcoming Standard hotel in Ibiza, which is also set to open this Spring.

The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon is pleased to introduce its pre-opening offer of 25% discount from Best Available Rate, including breakfast for up to 2 persons.  The offer is available for booking from Feb 4 to Jul 31 for stay period between May 11 and Feb 28, 2023.

Austria to further ease COVID rules from 5 February

Austria_COVID

February 04, 2022, Austria plans to loosen coronavirus restrictions in February after the country’s national vaccine mandate, the first of its kind in Europe, takes effect now. Starting February 5, restaurants will be allowed to remain open until midnight, as opposed to 10 p.m., Chancellor Karl Nehammer said.

Austria to further ease COVID rules from 5 February

In addition, rules effectively barring unvaccinated people from stores and restaurants will be phased out. Starting Feb. 12, proof of vaccination or recovery will no longer be required to enter shops. A week later, on Feb. 19, entry into restaurants will be allowed for all who can prove vaccination, recovery or a negative coronavirus test.

Nehammer also said that lockdown restrictions for vaccinated people, which have been in place since November, will end this week. The announcement comes in spite of record-high new infection numbers in recent days, fuelled by the omicron variant. On Friday, Austria reported 34,748 new cases. As of Thursday, the Alpine nation’s 7-day rate of infections stood at 2,381.2 per 100,000 inhabitants, about 10 times as high as the rate at the start of January.

AirAsia Restarts Services To Sydney

airline news

February 3, 2022 – AirAsia X, Malaysia’s low-cost long-haul airline, has announced the restart of flights between Sydney and Kuala Lumpur on February 14.

AirAsia X Restarts Services To Sydney

The move comes after the end of an $8.1 billion restructuring process, with the carrier stating that it will prioritise full redemptions for passengers affected by cancellations. Flights will initially operate once per week, with fares starting at $399 one way or $1,299 in the Premium Flatbed cabin.

Flights will be operated weekly on Mondays from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney, returning on Tuesdays, beginning 14 February 2022 and to 22 March 2022.

Fares from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur start at AU$399 and AU$1,299 one-way all-inclusive of check-in baggage, one meal and one drink.

AirAsia X has stated that it will prioritise complete redemptions for travellers affected by the restructuring. The airline guests may rebook their flights and use their credit cards to do so.

The autumn/winter schedules will be announced in mid-February.

“Following our travel downtime over the last two years, and the recent completion of our restructuring process, we are thrilled to be able to relaunch and commence our gradual return to the skies, said Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X.

“This would not have been possible without the overwhelming support from our guests and creditors, and we thank them for their patience and understanding.

“Without any domestic routes, Air Asia X has been significantly affected by the pandemic. We now see light at the end of this long tunnel, and we are working hard to operate again in all our key markets, as one of the world’s leading low-cost medium-haul operators.

“Starting with flights to and from Sydney, we will progressively continue to honour outstanding bookings and Credit Accounts for our guests and creditors in other markets as soon as possible,” he said.

Fully vaccinated Australian citizens, permanent residents, international students, and eligible visa holders can travel to and from Australia without applying for a travel exemption.
