March 25, 2022  – Riga Airport flights – more than 100 destinations

During the summer season of 2022 starting on 27 March, along with transition to summertime, Riga Airport will offer connections to more than 100 direct regular and charter destinations.

Riga Airport flights

As of 31 March, a new airline – the Dutch low-cost airline Transavia Airlines C.V. – will launch its operations at Riga Airport. The airline will operate three flights a week on the Riga – Amsterdam route, thus ensuring even better connections between the Baltic States and one of the busiest transit airports in Europe.

Airlines will also offer new routes to passengers in the summer season. The national airline airBaltic will launch flights from Riga to Batumi in Georgia in May, while the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair will add two new destinations to its range of destinations: Riga – Växjö (Sweden) from 28 March and Riga – Newcastle (United Kingdom) from 1 April.

After a break of more than two years, airBaltic will resume flights to Malta at the end of April, while the Spanish city of Girona will return to the Ryanair flight schedule.

The planned total number of flights is steadily increasing as the spring approaches, and especially from next week, which will be the first full week of the summer season.

Around 940 flights are planned at Riga Airport next week, which is a quarter more than this week. At the end of April, the forecast for scheduled and charter passenger flights already exceeds 1 000 flights per week.

With strong RevPAR acceleration in 2021, Hyatt Place and Hyatt House brands are well positioned to respond to growing travel demand in the Americas

Hyatt expands

Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) announced today that Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels in the Americas continue to outperform in leisure, urban, drive-to, and mixed-use locations, with 48 new hotels in these brands expected to open across the Americas in 16 new markets for Hyatt in 2022 and 2023.

With more than 470 Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels currently open in the Americas, the brands continue to attract travelers looking for seamless hotel experiences and owners and operators that are committed to delivering brand and operational excellence.

Hyatt expands: Hyatt Place and Hyatt House brands in the Americas will represent more than 6,400 rooms planned by year-end 2023, positively contributing to Hyatt’s industry-leading net rooms growth, which was 19.5% in 2021.

This includes growth as a result of Hyatt’s acquisition of Apple Leisure Group (ALG). The anticipated Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels in the Americas represent almost 9% of Hyatt’s total pipeline, and Hyatt will welcome more than 20 new owners to the Hyatt family.

Top-Performing Select Service Brands

Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels in the Americas continue to deliver strong performance, outperforming peers with an almost 400 basis points market share improvement in 2021 over 2019, with leisure, urban, and drive-to destinations as some of the top performing segments in 2021. Additionally, the Hyatt Place and Hyatt House brands in the Americas led occupancy rates across all regions and Hyatt brands with 65.1% in Q4 2021 or 61.8% for full-year 2021.

“The Hyatt Place and Hyatt House brands continue to perform incredibly well, especially among leisure transient guests, with leisure destinations commanding strong ADR,” said Jim Tierney, senior vice president, development and owner relations, Hyatt. “With an eye toward recovery, we believe these hotels will remain attractive to leisure guests thanks to distribution, value, and amenities. For example, in Q4 2021, we saw business transient demand accelerate due to companies returning to the office and business travelers hitting the road again.”

Thoughtfully Growing in Markets that Matter

The 48 hotels expected to open in the Americas by 2023 will expand the Hyatt Place and Hyatt House brands into locations where Hyatt’s loyal guests and members are traveling and will bring the brands to 44 markets, 16 of which are new markets for Hyatt – including Montréal, Québec, Panama City Beach, Fla., Sacramento, Calif., and Virginia Beach, Va.

“We continue to grow the Hyatt Place and Hyatt House brands in markets that matter to our guests and loyalty members, and in strategic locations where our owners and operators will see meaningful results,” Tierney continued.

“From leisure destinations to downtown locations, mixed-use developments to college campuses and airport locations, our pipeline of new properties demonstrates the strength and resonance of the Hyatt Place and Hyatt House brands with developers, owners, operators, and guests.”

Euston train station – new with stunning golden roof – what treasures were found during construction?

blank

London Euston station

Euston train station – treasures uncovered

London Euston station will have a golden roof, coloured bronze or gold and is part of new plans for the high-speed railway in London.
We have to wait a little before it opens, somewhere between 2031 and 2036.

In the mean time, archaeologists working on the HS2 project in Euston discovered Victorian time capsules and the remains of Captain Matthew Flinders, the Royal Navy explorer who led the first circumnavigation of Australia.

The discovery at Euston train station

Archaeologists working in West London on the HS2 project have uncovered a fascinating rare set of Iron Age potins, an early version of the coin, dating back to the 1st century BC.

The hoard of over 300 potins is a significant historical find, and was discovered in Hillingdon in August last year (2020). The find may be recognized as “treasure” under British Law.

‘The Hillingdon Hoard’ – as it has been called – dates back to the late Iron Age, during a period of change as the Romans began to establish themselves in Britain and create Londinium. The potins are based on coins struck in Marseille, France, about 2,175 years ago, which bear the left-facing head of Apollo on one side and a bull charging right on the other. The use of these early coins spread across northern Europe. In England their use was commonly linked to Kent, Essex or Hertfordshire. The term ‘potin’ refers to the base metal silver-like alloy used in coins. It is typically a mixture of copper, tin and lead.

What were the potins used for?

Historians are unclear what the potins were used for during the Iron Age, particularly as the exchange of goods and service, or bartering is thought to have been the main method of commerce at that time, nor why the coins were deposited where they were found.

Archaeologists analysing the discovery believe the potins may have been to mark the boundary of a property or as an offering to the Gods – in a woodland clearing or near a sacred spring. It is not unusual for a hoard to be found in an apparently isolated location and they may also have been buried as saving hoards or as emergency hoards in times of crisis.

The first series of potins produced in Britain, are known as Kentish Primary or Thurrock types, and are likely to have been made no later than 150 BC. Sometime before 100 BC, these rather bulky coins were replaced by thinner coins with more degenerate designs, now called Flat Linear types. Over a period of several decades, the Flat Linear potins gradually evolved into a wide variety of forms, with the depiction of the bull and the head of Apollo becoming more and more stylised. The Hillingdon Hoard is late in the Flat Linear sequence.

A hoard of a similar size, the ‘Sunbury hoard’ was discovered in 2010 but the potins were dated much earlier in the Iron Age. Potins from late in the Iron Age, similar to the Hillingdon Hoard, have been found previously but in much smaller quantities, making this find very significant.

The site in Hillingdon was undergoing archaeological excavation and analysis led by HS2’s enabling works contractor, Costain Skanska joint venture (CS JV) and the archaeologists involved were elated to make such a significant discovery. Following a storm, ground conditions changed, and revealed where the coins were buried.

Furthermore, the airline will run daily flights between Tivat and Istanbul.

Air Montenegro faces no direct competition on any of its new routes. Paris and Lyon were both previously served by the former national carrier Montenegro Airlines.

Air Montenegro flights to France – the airline initially planned to introduce Lyon to its network for a limited time between September and October of last year, however, it suspended ticket sales several weeks before the route’s launch. This summer will also see Air Serbia introduce operations to Lyon. The carrier has said the new route will offer “seamless connections to cities such as Podgorica and Tivat”.

The Montenegrin carrier plans to grow its fleet this summer by up to two aircraft. The Montenegrin government has confirmed plans it will acquire an Embraer E195 aircraft for the state carrier. The jet, registered 40-AOC, is owned by the Brazilian BNDS bank and was previously operated by Montenegro Airlines.

The aircraft has been grounded since December 26, 2020. Initially, Air Montenegro was to acquire the jet itself, however, informed the state last December it did not have sufficient finances to do so. Air Montenegro also plans to dry lease a larger jet, from either the Airbus A320-family or the Boeing 737 family this April, at the earliest, for a period of between three and eight years. The carrier currently boasts a fleet of two E195s.

March 21, 2022 -Delta expands summer schedule

  • More than 510 weekly flights to Europe, including more from New York-JFK and Boston than any other carrier
  • Delta Premium Select offered on nearly every flight, giving customers access to 750,000 more seats in Delta’s three premium experiences vs. summer 2021*
  • More service to Amsterdam, London and Paris

Customers looking for summer adventures abroad will discover plenty of inspiration in Delta’s service offerings to Europe, which include more routes and destinations in 2022, along with more opportunities to indulge in Delta’s premium cabins with 143% more seats available to customers vs. summer 2021.

Delta expands summer schedule

“Delta has been focused on building back our network to give customers easy, convenient access to wherever they want to go, and we’re delivering on that promise with up to 74 daily flights to 21 European destinations from 10 U.S. gateways this summer,” said Joe Esposito, Delta’s S.V.P. – Network Planning. “We have also accelerated improvements to our aircraft so that customers can enjoy a more comfortable journey, including offering more seats than ever before in Delta Premium Select, which will be available on nearly every flight to Europe in the months ahead.”

The airline has already added flights to major cities across the Atlantic with more frequencies, returning routes and modernized, upgraded aircraft. The latest updates to Delta’s summer schedule include new flights between New York-JFK and Stockholm (ARN) starting June 1 and between Salt Lake City and London-Heathrow (LHR) beginning May 14.

Through Delta’s partnerships with Air France, KLM and Virgin Atlantic, customers can access nearly 200 more destinations throughout Europe, Africa, the Middle East and India from 19 U.S. cities.

MORE FLIGHTS FROM DELTA’S BIGGEST GLOBAL HUBS

  • Delta expands summer schedule: As the largest trans-Atlantic carrier from New York-JFK and Boston, Delta will operate up to 27 daily flights to 20 European destinations from JFK, including restarting pre-COVID service to Zurich, Brussels, Edinburgh, Copenhagen and Prague.
  • In Boston, Delta will operate up to nine daily flights to nine trans-Atlantic destinations, offering nearly 5,000 more seats each week compared with summer 2019.
  • Delta is also the U.S. Southeast’s largest carrier, operating up to 17 daily flights from Atlanta to 14 trans-Atlantic destinations, including increased three-times-daily service to Amsterdam as well as to London and Rome to twice-daily.
  • Delta’s Midwest hubs in Detroit and Minneapolis will operate up to 14 daily nonstop flights to the airline’s global hubs in Amsterdam, London and Paris as well as daily service to Frankfurt, Munich and Reykjavík.
  • On the U.S. West Coast, the airline’s Seattle hub will operate twice-daily service to Amsterdam and once-daily service to London and Paris. Salt Lake City will offer a daily, nonstop flight to Delta’s three respective trans-Atlantic hubs. Delta will also return to daily Portland-to-Amsterdam service.

PREMIUM LEISURE TRAVEL ACCELERATES IN 2022

Delta expands summer schedule: As international travel returns, Delta customers on nearly every flight to Europe will enjoy upgraded experiences on the airline’s refreshed Airbus A330** and Boeing 767-300 fleets, which now offer a consistent onboard experience with a choice of four experiences – Delta One or Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin. Both fleet types have also received additional upgrades like refreshed lavatories and new LED cabin lighting.

Delta Premium Select, the airline’s premium economy cabin, includes more space to relax and stretch out with a wider seat, deeper recline and an adjustable footrest and leg rest. Customers will watch Delta’s best-in-class seatback entertainment on larger screens while powering up their own devices with in-seat power and USB ports. They’ll also receive an upgraded amenity kit, noise-canceling headsets and a blanket and memory-foam pillow to help them arrive rested and refreshed. Customers can expect additional enhancements to the Delta Premium Select in-flight experience later this year.

Delta FlyReady℠ – the airline’s digital dashboard solution that helps customers verify they’ve met their destination’s entry requirements prior to travel – was recently updated with an improved experience for customers traveling internationally. The update introduced a more personalized view of travel requirements at the customer’s destination, an all-new design with a more responsive and enhanced interface on mobile, and easier-to-use functionality, allowing customers to better manage their documents.

P&O Ferries suspension – what does it mean for customers? March 2022

cruise news

P&O Ferries suspension

blank

blank

blank

March 18, 2022 – P&O Ferries suspension

A look at how the halting of services will affect those who are planning to travel.

P&O Ferries suspension

All the company’s ferry services are currently suspended. P&O normally operates 14 services a day between Dover and Calais, three between Liverpool and Dublin, and seven on the increasingly important freight route between Larne in County Antrim and Cairnryan in Dumfries and Galloway. There is also normally an overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam. This has been cancelled, along with all other services.

I am due to travel shortly – what do I do?

On the Dover-Calais route there is plenty of capacity for those looking to take a car over to France. Rival operator DFDS has ferries running every 40 minutes or so to Calais or Dunkirk.

P&O ticket holders are being directed to these services, and DFDS is accepting P&O tickets.

In its latest posting, P&O says: “If travelling on our Dover/Calais route please arrive at the port as booked and we will arrange to get you away on an alternative carrier as quickly as possible. Once at the port please make your way to the DFDS check-in booths.”

P&O Ferries suspension: Those hoping to take ferries to Ireland face having to switch ferry company, and to buy a new reservation. Stena Line runs from Cairnryan to Belfast while Irish Ferries operates from Holyhead to Dublin.

Those travelling from Hull to Rotterdam face the biggest disruption and longest drives. Stena offers Harwich to the Hook of Holland – the nearest replacement for those needing to travel urgently. P&O will have to refund passengers for crossings not taken.

What about freight and P&O Cruises?

With not many car drivers travelling on ferries right now, the biggest disruption to services will be to truck operators. Queues of trucks have already built up in Kent. The company accounts for about 15% of UK freight movements so some knock-on effects can be expected, and trade to Ireland will be affected.

P&O Ferries suspension: P&O Cruises is owned by Carnival, and is therefore completely unaffected by this.

How long is this going to last?

P&O has said the disruption will last several days. It is unclear how long it will take the company to remove existing staff who are understandably furious at their treatment.

The RMT union has instructed members to stay onboard their vessels once they have docked or risk being “locked out” of their jobs.

“We are digging in for the long haul. We are determined to fight,” RMT spokesperson Geoff Martin said.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how long it takes the company to train up the new agency staff that have reportedly been brought in to replace them. If other support workers at the affected docks refuse to work with the company, this could easily escalate into a protracted dispute.

I have a booking for my summer holiday or credit voucher I have not yet used – what does this mean to me?

The company is still trading, and has made it very clear that it is not going into liquidation. In theory this means nothing has changed and the company should honour your summer booking and allow passengers to use credit vouchers that they accepted in lieu of cancelled trips last year. If the company did collapse, future reservation and voucher holders would then face a battle to recoup their funds. Travel insurers and credit card companies would be expected to step in for some (but not all) customers.

I am disgusted at the way the company has behaved. Can I cancel my summer booking?

Possibly. Passengers who booked the company’s most expensive Fully Flexi, and the medium priced Standard Flexi tickets are refundable, meaning passengers could cancel without financial penalty. Those who booked the cheapest Saver tickets are stuck with non-refundable tickets. There would be nothing to stop you cancelling but it would be at your expense.

Will the company face a mass boycott?

It is highly likely. By Thursday afternoon many had expressed their outrage on Twitter. Car drivers are important, but for a boycott to really have an effect it would have to include freight operators. They typically care less for employee rights but equally many will be frustrated at the way the company has gone about this. Truck drivers have described waiting hours at Calais with no P&O staff in sight. – P&O Ferries suspension –

Fast PCR tests Israel – now offered at the airport and only $35

Fast PCR tests Israel

March 17, 2022 – Fast PCR tests Israel – now offered at the airport and only $35

As part of the actions to improve and streamline the entry of tourists into Israel, a complex will be opened at Ben Gurion Airport that will allow the passage and inspection of tourist groups arriving through the tourism organizers, in order to alleviate the traffic congestion by about 25%.

This was made possible after the Minister of Tourism, Yoel Razvozov, acted in front of the various bodies and brought about the unique outline according to which: an inbound tourism organizer will inform the company conducting the tests about the expected arrival of a group of tourists, and this will create a space for them, where they will perform the post-landing PCR test, for the purpose of approving their entry into Israel. This will facilitate the entry of organized tourism into Israel.

Fast PCR tests Israel

Minister of Tourism Yoel Razvozov: “This is a step that will significantly reduce the waiting time for queues at Ben Gurion Airport. Our goal as a government is to get the tourism industry back into action as soon as possible, and simplify the entry process to Israel. Thus, and through such actions, we will be able to ensure tourists a quick and safe transition from COVID-19 to their vacation in Israel”.
Yossi Fattal, Director General of the Chamber of Inbound Tourism Organizers: “The quick response of the Minister, the convening of the responsible parties and the creation of an outline for the tourist groups is encouraging, joyful and ensures more comfortable movement of tourists.

Thanks to such moves, and of course the simple outline for tourists to enter Israel, with and without vaccines, we will be able to return in 2022 to about forty percent of the tourism that came to Israel before the outbreak of the COVID-19, the number of tourists that will provide a livelihood for 50,000 citizens, mainly from the periphery”.

SEABOURN IS SET TO EXPLORE ALASKA AND BRITISH COLUMBIA AND CANADA AND NEW ENGLAND IN 2022 AS CANADA REOPENS PORTS TO CRUISE SHIPS

Following the recent announcement from Transport Canada allowing the safe resumption of cruising to visit Canadian ports, Seabourn, the ultra-luxury ocean and expedition cruise line, is finalizing plans for its 2022 scheduled voyages to Alaska and British Columbia in this summer and Canada and New England in the fall.

 Canada reopens to cruise ships

The new guidance paves the way for Seabourn guests to sail for the first time in two years on these popular itineraries that include stops in various Canadian ports throughout the summer and fall.

“We welcome this new guidance from the Canadian government that will allow our guests to visit beautiful ports in Canada again,” said Josh Leibowitz, President of Seabourn. “We look forward to returning to these amazing destinations and offering our travelers a world of experiences on land and at sea. With only 458 guests on board the Seabourn Odyssey, these voyages to Canada this summer space is very limited.”

In 2022, Seabourn will offer a selection of voyages on both the eastern and western sides in Canada.

Canada reopens to cruise ships:

Alaska and British Columbia
From May through September 2022, Seabourn Odyssey will sail to Alaska and British Columbia with a series of seven-day voyages between Vancouver and Juneau. Each seven-day cruise can be combined to create a 14-day round-trip Vancouver voyage. In addition, the ship will sail four 10- and 11-day round-trip voyages from Vancouver. Each voyage will include spectacular glacier experiences in places like Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier or Tracy/Endicott Arm, and will also offer the popular Ventures by Seabourn program of expedition-style experiences led by the onboard expedition team.

Canada and New England
Beginning late August 2022, Seabourn Quest will explore the vivid beauty of autumn along the eastern side of Canada with a series of 12-day voyages to Canada and New England. The ship will sail between Montreal and Manhattan in New York City, with one 12-day Canadian Autumn cruise with heavy Canadian content sailing round-trip from Montreal on September 22. With the season cooling, the ship will head south in late October from Montreal on a 14-day Atlantic Coast Harbors cruise to Miami.

Seabourn represents the pinnacle of ultra-luxury travel. Our all-inclusive, boutique ships offer all-suite accommodations with oceanfront views; award-winning dining; complimentary premium spirits and fine wines available at all times; renowned service provided by an industry-leading crew; a relaxed, sociable atmosphere that makes guests feel at home; a pedigree in expedition travel through the Ventures by Seabourn program and two new ultra-luxury purpose-built expedition ships coming in 2022 and 2023.

Seabourn takes travelers to every continent on the globe, visiting more than 400 ports including marquee cities and lesser-known ports and hideaways.

Guests of Seabourn experience extraordinary offerings and programs, including partnerships with leading entertainers, dining, personal health and wellbeing, and engaging speakers.

SAS continues to phase in new fuel-efficient aircraft and has now one of Europe’s most modern fleets. The charter flights will be flown using the new Airbus A320 aircraft offering the passengers a more comfortable and sustainable way of travel.
