What’s cooking in France – French onion soup

French onion soup is a soup usually based on meat stock and onions, and often served gratinéed with croutons or a larger piece of bread covered with cheese floating on top. Ancient in origin, the dish underwent a resurgence of popularity in the 1960s in the United States due to a greater interest in French cuisine. French onion soup may be served as a meal in itself or as a first course

What’s cooking in France

History

Onion soups have been popular at least as far back as Roman times. Throughout history, they were seen as food for poor people, as onions were plentiful and easy to grow. The modern version of this soup originates in Paris, France in the 18th century, made from beef broth, and caramelized onions.

It was introduced to the United States by the New York restaurant of Henri Mouquin in 1861, where his wife Marie Julie Grandjean Mouquin was the chef. It is often finished by being placed under a salamander in a ramekin with croutons and Comté melted on top. The crouton on top is reminiscent of ancient soups.

Recipe

Much of the success of this soup depends on the stock that you are using, and stock varies tremendously in its taste. Depending on your stock, you may need to bump up the flavor with some beef bouillon (we recommend Better Than Bouillon brand).
Taste the soup before putting it in the oven, and if it needs more seasoning, don’t be afraid to add more!

Ingredients
6 large red or yellow onions , peeled and thinly sliced root to stem, about 10 cups of sliced onions total
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon sugar
Kosher salt
2 cloves garlic, minced
8 cups beef stock, chicken stock, or a combination of the two
1/2 cup dry vermouth or dry white wine
2 bay leaves
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (can also use a few sprigs of fresh thyme) OR 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (more to taste)
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons brandy (optional)
8 slices (1 inch thick) French bread or baguette
1 1/2 cups grated Gruyere
Sprinkling of Parmesan

Method

Caramelize the onions:
In a 5 to 6 quart thick-bottomed pot, heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil on medium heat. Add the onions and toss to coat with the olive oil.

Cook the onions, stirring often, until they have softened, about 15 to 20 minutes.

Increase the heat to medium high. Add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil and the butter and cook, stirring often, until the onions start to brown, about 15 more minutes.

Sprinkle with sugar (to help with the caramelization) and 1 teaspoon of salt. Continue to cook until the onions are well browned, about 10 to 15 more minutes.

Deglaze the pot with vermouth or wine:

Add the wine or vermouth to the pot and scrape up the browned bits on the bottom and sides of the pot, deglazing the pot as you go.

Add the stock, bay leaves, and thyme:

Add the stock, bay leaves, and thyme. Bring to a simmer, cover the pot and lower the heat to maintain a low simmer. Cook for about 30 minutes.

Season to taste with more salt and add freshly ground black pepper. Discard the bay leaves. Add brandy if using.

Toast the French bread slices:

While the soup is simmering, line a sheet pan with parchment paper or foil and preheat the oven to 450°F with a rack in the upper third of the oven.

Brush both sides of the French bread or baguette slices lightly with olive oil (you’ll end up using about a tablespoon and a half of olive oil for this).

Put in the oven and toast until lightly browned, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from oven.

Turn the toasts over and sprinkle with the grated Gruyere cheese and Parmesan. Return to oven when it’s close to serving time and bake until the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned.

Serve:

To serve, ladle soup into a bowl and transfer one cheesy toast onto the top of each bowl of soup.

Alternatively, you can use individual oven-proof bowls or one large casserole dish. Ladle the soup into the bowls or casserole dish. Cover with the toast and sprinkle with cheese. Put into the broiler for 10 minutes at 350° F, or until the cheese bubbles and is slightly browned.

If you’ve never tried French onion Soup please make sure to ask for it when you travel to France

Avianca and Gol

Avianca and Gol merge to create pan-Latin American airline network

Avianca and Gol

Avianca and Gol merge to create pan-Latin American airline network

May 12, 2022 –

Colombia’s Avianca and Brazil’s GOL have agreed to a merger, creating a pan-Latin American airline network. The airlines will continue to maintain independent brands but benefiting from greater efficiencies under aligned ownership, and the lowest unit costs in their respective markets. They will operate under a holding company structure named Abra Group.

Avianca and Gol

Through recent investments made by Avianca’s and Viva’s shareholders, the group will also own a non-controlling 100% economic interest in Viva’s operations in Colombia and Peru as well as convertible debt representing a minority interest investment in Chile’s Sky Airline.

Together, Avianca and GOL will anchor a pan-Latin American network of airlines that will have the lowest unit cost in their respective markets, the leading loyalty programs across the region, and other synergistic businesses. Avianca and GOL will continue to maintain independent brands, talent, teams, and culture while benefiting from greater efficiencies and investments under common aligned ownership.

Abra will provide a platform for the operating airlines to further reduce costs, achieve greater economies of scale, continue to operate a state-of-the-art fleet of aircraft, and expand their routes, services, product offerings, and loyalty programs.

In the aggregate, the airlines under the Abra Group ownership will offer customers the largest network of complementary routes, with minimal overlap, across their markets.

Abra’s financial strength will provide long-term stability and agility to the participating airlines that will allow consistent and sustained investment in innovations and synergies.

Abra Group will be co-controlled by the principal shareholders of Avianca and the majority shareholder of GOL and be led by management with significant airline experience across the region, a long history of entrepreneurship, and a proven track record of growth and successful airline transformations.

Roberto Kriete, who will serve as the group’s Chairman, grew TACA in the 1980s into the leading Central American airline before merging it with Colombia’s Avianca Airlines in 2009. He also founded the leading Mexican carrier Volaris in 2006.

Constantino de Oliveira Junior, who will serve as the group’s CEO, pioneered Latin America’s low-cost carrier revolution when he founded GOL Airlines in 2001. Together with the acquisition of VRG in 2007 and Webjet in 2011, he led the company’s growth to a market-leading position.

Adrian Neuhauser, current President and CEO of Avianca, and Richard Lark, current CFO of GOL, will serve as the group’s Co-Presidents, in addition to maintaining their current roles at the airlines; further details on the Abra management team will be provided at closing.

Abra Group’s management will focus on achieving synergies to ensure the lowest cost structure in each carrier’s relevant market; expanding routes, services, product offerings, and loyalty programs; and developing innovative new products and services that will meet the evolving needs of passengers and air cargo customers in the highly competitive Latin American air transportation market and beyond.

Abra will also ensure that its operating airlines are ESG market leaders by providing enhanced governance as well as the financial strength to continue to invest in a lower carbon footprint fleet, which will significantly accelerate the airline industry’s path towards meeting carbon neutrality targets.

Roberto Kriete, Abra Group’s Chairman, said: “Our vision is to create an airline group that tackles 21st century issues and improves air travel for our customers, employees, and partners as well as the communities in which we operate. Our customers will benefit from access to even better fares, more destinations, more frequent flights and seamless connections, and the ability to earn and use points across the brands’ loyalty programs. They will also be able to enjoy enhanced travel benefits and access to superior products and services.”

Constantino de Oliveira Junior, Abra Group’s CEO, said: “This agreement places Abra’s airlines in a position to lead air travel within the region – serving a population of over one billion and GDP of nearly three trillion US dollars – providing significant opportunities for capacity and revenue growth. Our unique enterprise structure will allow each airline to drive results by maintaining their independent brands, talent, teams, and culture and will provide employees more opportunities for personal and professional growth at every stage of their careers.”

Four Seasons Resort Egypt, Sharm El Sheikh, reveals four new culinary experiences

Four Seasons Resort Egypt,

Four Seasons Resort Egypt, Sharm El Sheikh, reveals four new culinary experiences

May 11, 2022 –

Fresh from the unveiling of a much anticipated expansion and enhancement, Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt has added four exciting new dining concepts, bringing the total number of restaurants and bars to a staggering twelve.

Four Seasons Resort Egypt

“Our new restaurants and bars are re-defining the dining experience in Sharm El Sheikh with authentic ingredients, creative cuisines, and inviting and interactive atmospheres immersed in our desert to sea culture, all led by the most talented chefs and mixologists,” says Simone Cerea, Director of Food & Beverage. “We’ve created a luxurious culinary destination for the many guests who visit us year after year, whether first-time visitors or travellers exploring Sharm El Sheikh.”

In addition to the Resort’s existing diverse range of restaurants and bars, the highly popular Bedouin breakfast and romantic beach dining have long proven to be holiday highlights of many guests at this beachfront oasis. And now there’s even more to serve every palate: Yatai invites guests on a culinary journey inspired by travels through Asia; Zitouni is a lively, laid-back spot for authentic Lebanese cuisine; poolside Luna dazzles with innovative flavours spanning Latin America from Mexico to Peru; and Breeze, the barefoot-chic beach bar, is the ideal place to relax with drink in hand before or after a Red Sea adventure. Four Seasons Resort Egypt

Led by Executive Chef Sebastiano Spriveri, a 27-year Four Seasons veteran who oversees a team of passionate culinary experts, the Resort takes guests on a journey around the world from Egypt’s Red Sea shorelines. “Our restaurants introduce world-class cuisine to Sharm El Sheikh, with the addition of four new concepts that are bold, exciting, interactive and more importantly, have never been experienced in Sharm El Sheikh before,” says Spriveri.

Four Seasons Resort Egypt

Asian Sensations at Yatai
Bringing something completely new to Sharm El Sheikh, this is the place to embark on a culinary exploration of upscale street food and Asian favourites, in a space that combines elegant Asian-inspired interiors with gold accents, interactive cooking experiences and a relaxed outdoor lagoon-side seating.

Fuelled by the unique creativity of Asian Chef de Cuisine Jiang Xin, Yatai’s menu traverses the Asian continent, with five live-action cooking stations adding to the signature restaurant’s drama and energy. Sushi-lovers will fall for the wide variety of hand-rolled maki items, and the teppanyaki counter provides an irresistible moment of theatre. Yatai’s pièce de résistance, Sharm El Sheikh’s only authentic Peking duck, cooked in a traditional duck oven and carved tableside.

Beverages at Yatai celebrate innovation in the world of fine drinking, from hand-crafted cocktails and mocktails infused with Asian spices and bitters to hot and cold sake, carefully selected wines, popular Asian beers, Japanese whiskies, and a range of Japanese green and regional Chinese teas.

Middle Eastern Authenticity at Zitouni
As soon as guests step into Zitouni, where the scent of freshly baked bread fills the air, and look around, it becomes instantly clear where it’s coming from – the three copper ovens that form the centrepiece of the restaurant.

Lebanese Chef de Cuisine Jean Claude Fahd takes the helm of this dynamic restaurant, where an open kitchen and interactive cooking stations add to the energy, and a variety of different seating options suit all diners, whether looking for a big family breakfast or a long, lazy dinner.

In the morning, those signature copper ovens turn out fresh breads, egg cocottes, and manakish, the Arabic breakfast staple loved throughout the Middle East, with its fluffy base and toppings ranging from piping hot melted Kashkaval cheese, to zaatar, minced lamb and pine nuts. But it’s not just baked items coming out of those ovens. Slow-cooked meat and fish delicately flavoured with Lebanese spices, traditional tajines, charcoal-grills and baked desserts all make an entrance. Family-style mezzeh platters complemented by homemade pomegranate molasses and piles of oven-fresh pita are also proving to be crowd-pleasers.

A Voyage of Discovery at Latin American-Inspired Luna
The views over the Red Sea and Tiran Island from Luna are mesmerizing. Sitting next to Luna pool in an open-air gazebo with a chic décor of weathered and textured timbers, this is the spot to lounge and snack. Mexican Chef de Cuisine Jorge Ariko’s menu invites guests on a journey through Latin America from Mexico to Peru, with original dishes paired with creative cocktails perfect for days in the sun. Befitting the Red Sea location, seafood ceviches sit alongside guacamole, presented in a mortar and pestle for guests to custom-blend their own. Salads, tacos, plancha-roasted octopus and anticuchos complete the line-up, and desserts include churros with chili chocolate dipping sauce, and roasted pineapple with pink peppercorns and coconut ice cream.

Beverages also lean on the Latin side, with mojitos, margaritas, rum-based cocktails and punch bowl mocktails providing perfect sips for sunny seaside afternoons.

Barefoot-Chic at Seaside Breeze
Beach meets bar at barefoot-chic Breeze, where Italian mixologist Francesco Bonauguro crafts beverages that perfectly complement the seaside setting. Perched on the edge of the beach, this is the place for kicking off shoes and luxuriating in the cooling coastal breezes. At Breeze, every cocktail has a story, from the Arabian-inspired Souq Colada, a take on the traditional piña colada with dried apricot and arak, to the refreshing gin-based Sunshine Smash with fresh flavours of mint, mango and lime.

While the sun may be shining, the bartenders whip up a storm here, shaking up signature cocktails, mocktails, with spectacular views of the Red Sea as their stage.

Be among the first to dine around the newly introduced restaurants and bars at Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Hong Kong travel update – tourism revival plan

Hong Kong travel update

Hong Kong travel update – tourism revival plan

May 11, 2022,

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has announced a revival plan that highlights Hong Kong’s vibrant developments and new experiences, aiming to generate a positive ambience and make the city a top-of-mind destination for worldwide travelers when travel resumes.

Hong Kong travel update

“The fifth wave of the pandemic is subsiding. Hong Kong’s daily life and economic activities are now gradually returning to normal, allowing us to stage large-scale events and prepare to welcome back visitors”

With the theme “Together Towards New Horizons”, Tourism Update 2022 attracted 3,200 trade representatives from travel agencies, attractions, hotels, airlines, retailers, restaurants, and meeting and exhibition organisers from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and overseas markets. The HKTB shared insights into the latest tourism trends and its work plan for the coming year.

In his opening remarks, HKTB Chairman Dr. Y K Pang highlighted Hong Kong’s return to normality. “The fifth wave of the pandemic is subsiding. Hong Kong’s daily life and economic activities are now gradually returning to normal, allowing us to stage large-scale events and prepare to welcome back visitors,” said Dr. Pang.

“Throughout the pandemic, Hong Kong travel update never stopped building and upgrading its tourism infrastructure. We will see the grand opening of the Hong Kong Palace Museum this summer, while the third runway at Hong Kong International Airport is expected to go into service within the next couple of years. With these new infrastructure elements and the support of the Central and Hong Kong SAR Governments, Hong Kong’s competitive edge has held firm and we can head towards new horizons with confidence.”

In his presentation of the work plan for the coming year, HKTB Executive Director Dane Cheng described how the HKTB will focus first on generating a positive ambience in the city, stimulating consumption, and maintaining Hong Kong’s profile globally by launching “Hong Kong Summer Treats”. The campaign will provide a wide range of discounts and promotional offerings, and will begin with “Arts in Hong Kong” – a campaign that supports international art and cultural events, such as Art Basel, which will return in a physical format.

When social distancing measures are further relaxed, the HKTB will arrange more world-class events in phases, including the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival and Hong Kong WinterFest, and give its support to other high-profile events such as the Hong Kong Sevens.

Mr. Cheng stressed the importance of ensuring a recovery at home in the run-up to the return of worldwide visitors. “These promotions will generate a positive ambience in Hong Kong and demonstrate how we have returned to normal. The HKTB will then launch extensive promotions, including the tactical ‘Open House Hong Kong’ campaign, to welcome back visitors when the time is right. To better respond to market needs, we will also strive to enhance the visitor journey into a seamless experience through a comprehensive digital transformation,” said Mr. Cheng.

“The HKTB has conducted extensive research in 16 markets and found Hong Kong is still well-loved by travelers worldwide. They have specifically identified some major driving factors to visit Hong Kong, including cleanliness, local culture, in-depth experiences, unique cuisine, high accessibility, and ease of communications. These factors are not only core strengths of Hong Kong but also match the trends and tastes of the post-COVID travel era.”

Mr. Cheng added, “With our solid tourism foundations, our status as an East-meets-West center for international cultural exchange, our position at the heart of the dynamic Greater Bay Area, and our wealth of new tourism assets and infrastructure, Hong Kong’s tourism future is full of potential.”

Guest speakers from major organisations also outlined new developments to further enhance Hong Kong’s world-class tourism infrastructure.

The West Kowloon Cultural District is one of Hong Kong’s major arts and cultural projects. Its contemporary art museum M+ opened last year and the Hong Kong Palace Museum will welcome its first visitors this summer. Speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer of the West Kowloon Cultural District Mrs. Betty Fung said, “As a unique cultural hub with unrivaled connectivity in Hong Kong and Asia, WKCD presents the best of the eastern and western culture to visitors, from Chinese arts and antiquities to contemporary visual culture, and offers visitors a holistic experience blending arts and culture with retail, dining and entertainment.”

Hong Kong travel update – Hong Kong International Airport plays a pivotal role in maintaining the city’s status as a leading international aviation hub. Airport Authority Hong Kong Executive Director (Airport Operations) Mrs. Vivian Cheung said, “In addition to maintaining our aviation hub status, our strategy is to transform Hong Kong International Airport from a city airport into an Airport City, developing ourselves into a destination in itself for visitors. The Airport City aims to attract global visitors through its wide range of offerings in retail, dining, entertainment and leisure, while providing a business platform through its convention and exhibition facilities. In parallel, we are further enhancing the airport’s sea and land connectivity with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, with a view to facilitating a seamless journey for the 70 million people in the region to visit the Airport City.”

The integration of culture, sports, and tourism is a key development direction. General Director (Commercial) of Kai Tak Sports Park Mr. James Irvine said, “As one of the most significant sports infrastructures in Hong Kong, Kai Tak Sports Park will add vibrancy to the city’s dynamic tourism landscape with its world-class sports, leisure and entertainment experiences. A first-of-its-kind destination set in the heart of the city will bring the global community to Hong Kong.”

Hong Kong is nominated as the World’s Leading City Break Destination 2021 by World Travel Awards.

Japan travel updated – border reopening for vaccinated travellers in May

May 10, 2022,

Japan is set to experiment with opening its borders to small groups of vaccinated foreign tourists as soon as this month in a potential lifeline for the country’s ailing travel industry.

Japan travel updated

Those wishing to visit must have undergone three Covid-19 vaccination shots and be part of a package tour with a fixed itinerary, FNN said, citing multiple government officials. The limited resumption of inbound tourism will be treated as an experiment and, if infections do not spread, the programme would be expanded, it said.

The report came a day after Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said in a speech in London that he planned to relax pandemic-related border restrictions in line with other wealthy democracies from June. He later added a note of caution, telling reporters he needed to look at the state of infections after a series of public holidays in late April and early May known as Golden Week. “As soon as June, based on the opinions of experts, we will review coronavirus regulations, including border policies, in stages,” Kishida said. “We are still in a period of transition back to normal life.”

cooking in Thailand

What’s cooking in Thailand – Thai Chicken Coconut Curry

cooking in Thailand - Thai Chicken Coconut Curry

What’s cooking in Thailand – Thai Chicken Coconut Curry

Thai cooking places emphasis on lightly prepared dishes with strong aromatic components and a spicy edge.

Traditional Thai cuisine loosely falls into four categories: tom (boiled dishes), yam (spicy salads), tam (pounded foods), and gaeng (curries). Deep-fries, stir-fries, and steamed dishes derive from Chinese cuisine.

Cooking in Thailand – Thai Chicken Coconut Curry

This is an easy Thai chicken curry that’s made in one skillet, ready in 20 minutes, and is naturally gluten-free. With cold weather upon us, nothing is better than diving into a bowl of this hearty yet healthy comfort food that’s layered with flavors. I could just drink the coconut milk-based sauce.

To make the red curry recipe, you’ll need:

Coconut oil
Sweet Vidalia onion

Chicken breasts
Garlic
Ground or fresh ginger
Ground coriander
Canned coconut milk
Shredded carrots

Thai red curry paste
Fresh spinach
Lime juice
Brown sugar
Fresh cilantro

Can Curry Powder Be Used Instead of Curry Paste?

Thai red curry paste adds a richer and smoother flavor profile than curry powder (Indian) does, but if all you have is curry powder, go for it knowing that the flavor of Thai versus Indian curry products is vastly different.

How to Make Thai Red Curry

This is a very easy curry recipe to make! Here’s how the Thai curry recipe comes together:

1- Add the oil and chopped onion to a large skillet and sauté until softened.
2 – Add the diced chicken and cook until done, then add the garlic, ginger, and coriander.

3- Coconut milk, carrots, Thai curry paste, salt, and pepper are stirred in next, and then the mixture should be left to bubble away for about 5 minutes.
4- Stir in the spinach, lime juice, and optional brown sugar last.

serve this coconut milk curry with a sprinkle of fresh cilantro to make the flavors pop.

Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand to boost staff as Kiwis start to book travel

Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand to boost staff as Kiwis start to book travel

May 09, 2022 –

Air New Zealand has seen an increase in bookings as customers rush to take advantage of open borders. While it’s welcome news for the airline and New Zealand, it is not without challenge.

Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty says, “Bookings on our domestic network are increasing as people start to travel again, and it’s fantastic to see international bookings flow in as we restart popular routes like Honolulu, Vancouver and San Francisco. Just this week, we operated more than 200 international flights, the highest in a long time.

“For a lot of our customers, these trips will be their first in more than two years, and it’s different to what it used to be. The new travel environment is complex, and what we’re hearing from our customers is that they have a preference to speak to a person rather than booking online or using an app. Previously around 1 in 8 customers called us before travel, now we are seeing around 1 in 3. This is leading to not only more calls, but also longer call times, with the average call handling time being around 16 minutes – approximately 50% longer than pre-Covid. While we have been recruiting into our contact centre since December last year, we just can’t keep up with the number of calls,” Geraghty adds.

The airline is looking to add 200 additional consultants, taking the total to more than 450 dedicated staff answering customer queries once training is complete in 8 weeks’ time. It’s also redeploying other staff to help out where possible.

Italy Orient Express

Italy Orient Express to open Venice hotel

Italy Orient Express

Italy Orient Express to open Venice hotel

May 09, 2022 –

Orient Express, part of the Accor group, has signed a partnership agreement with Italian hospitality group Arsenale to open the second Orient Express hotel in Italy at the spectacular Palazzo Donà Giovannelli in Venice.

Italy Orient Express

The groups have selected architect and interior designer Aline Asmar d’Amman and her studio Culture in Architecture to design and decorate the space.

Venice, once the gateway to Constantinople and a mythical stop on the legendary Orient Express train – that opened its doors in 1919 with the completion of the Simplon tunnel linking Switzerland to Italy – will be the home of the second Orient Express hotel, set to open in early 2024.

Located just ten minutes from Venice’s Santa Lucia train station, next to the Cannaregio shopping district, and rooted in the origins of the City of the Doges, the Palazzo Donà Giovannelli is a treasured palace built in 1400 by architect Filippo Calendario, known for Venice’s famed Doge’s Palace. Former home of the Duke of Urbino, a patron of the arts, it has been renovated twice, notably in 1800 by architect Gian Battista Meduna. At one time a pinacotheque which housed the painting La Tempesta by Giorgione, it was successively owned by the Donà and Giovannelli families.

An ode to the heritage of Venice, inspired by all of the cultures and eras that are forever a part of its history, the Orient Express Venice Hotel will be home to 45 rooms and suites, all overlooking the gardens and canals of Venice. The hotel bar will be located in the former piano nobile ballroom on the main floor of the building. A world-class restaurant will introduce guests to the flavours of Italian gastronomy. Select terraces hidden on the hotel’s rooftops will offer the most beautiful views of the wonders of the Serenissima.

“Orient Express Venice embodies a unique encounter between two icons: the legendary luxury brand and the Palazzo Donà Giovannelli. An architectural feat at the crossroads of cultures, a link between the East and the West, the landmark building is anchored in eternity and ready to come back to life with a theatrical and contemporary art of living, steeped in infinite elegance” says Aline Asmar d’Amman.

Born in Lebanon, Aline Asmar d’Amman, via her studio Culture in Architecture, creates projects where past and future are connected, where culture symbolizes a bridge between continents. Convinced that beauty adds to, in her words, “the poetic soul of the world”, she has designed the interior architecture of numerous private residences and has taken on the art direction of luxury hotels such as the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris and emblematic restaurants such as Le Jules Verne at the Eiffel Tower. She has also collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld on the making of prestigious decorations and a collection of objects and furniture in marble. Last April, she unveiled the architectural scenography of the Lebanese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of Art.

From the main entrance and its garden, which can be reached from the train station along the Strada Nova, or from the neo-Gothic and multi-layered facades that can be visited from the Rio de Noal by boat, Palazzo Donà Giovannelli is filled with beauty and grandeur. It is an island within an island, where doors and windows anchored in the sea seem to speak directly to the sky above.

Just one step inside this Palace evokes a feeling of complete enchantment. One enters as if leafing through the pages of the book of time. It is a plunge into an ageless romanticism, where the heritage of the stone seems to be frozen in time whispering layers of stories to be revealed. From the marble carved entrance, the plastered walls in faded lost colours to the masterful octagonal staircase of neo-Gothic style designed by the architect Meduna, artistry and a feeling of eternity collide. On its vaulted ceilings, the domes call for light and theatricality.

On the main floor, or piano nobile, its many salons and ballrooms are home to 800 years of history. It is a journey through the ages, a blend of baroque, neoclassical and gothic styles along with the splendour of Eastern fantasy, an exoticism that transcends the realm of possibility. The rooms are decorated with patterns, mosaics, stucco, paintings, frescoes tinted with forgotten colours and wonderful cherubs. The walls abound in enigmas never meant to be solved.

Stephen Alden, CEO Raffles and Orient Express, Accor commented: “The arrival of Orient Express in Venice resonates naturally with the brand’s history. It marks a return to the roots of a legend that finds its ultimate expression in the Palazzo Donà Giovannelli. Inspired by her multicultural background, passion for Venice and unique poetic language, Aline Asmar d’Amman will sublimate the design of one of the most charismatic palaces in the world.”

Paolo Barletta, CEO of Arsenale S.p.A added: “The strategic union between Venice and the new Orient Express Hotel represents another significant step in the objective that Arsenale is pursuing thanks to the partnership with Orient Express, namely the relaunch of luxury tourism that highlights the unprecedented artistic and cultural heritage of our Italian peninsula. Palazzo Donà Giovannelli will become a unique landmark in Venice with its exceptional design, history and heritage. Aline Asmar d’Amman’s meticulous care and eclectic experience will shed new light on the ancient beauty of the Palazzo, helping to spread a message of excellence from Venice throughout the whole world.”

Sydney-London route! Qantas announces world’s longest direct commercial flight

May 03, 2022 –

Travellers will be able to fly non-stop from Sydney to London after Qantas announced the world’s longest direct commercial flight. The airline said the 20-hour journey will become possible when it takes delivery of a dozen Airbus A350-1000 planes, which can do more than 10,000 miles without refuelling.

Sydney-London route

A Sydney to New York route is also being set up and the new-generation jets open up the potential for direct flights from Australia to any city in the world. The services start in late 2025 and will carry up to 238 passengers across four travel classes. For those wanting to stretch their legs on the mammoth flight, there will be a “wellbeing zone” in the centre of the aircraft that includes a snack bar and screens showing movement and stretching exercises.

It’s important to move around on a long flight as being less active can cause cause pain, stiffness and swelling in the legs, increasing the risk of developing a blood clot known as deep vein thrombosis. The jet is also being designed to offer passengers more room, but 40% of the seats will be in expensive premium cabins.

The planes will have a ‘wellbeing zone’ with snacks and stretching tutorials. Qantas says the planes also have 25% less CO2 emissions per seat and less noise, and it claims the long-distance project – which it calls “Project Sunrise” – will be carbon neutral from day one.

The Australian carrier began a 17-hour non-stop flight between London and Perth in 2018, using Boeing Dreamliner jets. The world’s longest route is currently a New York JFK to Singapore route, operated by Singapore Airlines, which takes 18 hours 50 minutes and travels just over 9,500 miles.

Qantas also said it is buying 40 new aircraft for domestic routes – 20 Airbus A321XLRs and 20 A220-300s – as it retires older Boeing planes.
