Entry requirements Greece – latest update

May 3, 2022,

All travellers can now enter Greece restriction-free as the authorities have decided to drop all of their COVID-19 entry rules. The Ministry said that from now on, all incoming travellers would no longer have to follow any rules.

Entry requirements Greece

This means that all travellers, regardless of their country of origin, can enter Greece without having to provide COVID-19 proof – a vaccination, recovery, or test certificate – upon their arrival. Apart from dropping the entry rules, the Greek authorities have revealed that the country has also decided to lift the remaining of its domestic COVID-19 measures. Therefore, while in Greece, all travellers can access cafes, bars, restaurants, and other public places and venues without being required to hold one of the certificates mentioned above.

Greece has already dropped the requirement to fill in the Passenger Locator Form too. Previously, this requirement applied to all travellers who entered Greece. However, since March 15, travellers from all countries have been permitted entry even if they did not hold such a form.

However, the Greek Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris, has highlighted that Greece might reintroduce its entry restrictions again in September, once the summer season is over.

Best Tiramisu

What’s cooking in Italy – Best Tiramisu

Best Tiramisu

What’s cooking in Italy – Best Tiramisu

Tiramisu is a coffee-flavoured Italian dessert. It is made of ladyfingers (savoiardi) dipped in coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar, and mascarpone cheese, flavoured with cocoa. The recipe has been adapted into many varieties of cakes and other desserts. Its origins are often disputed among Italian regions Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Best Tiramisu

The recipe for tiramisu is not found in cookbooks before the 1960s. It is also not mentioned in encyclopedias and dictionaries of the 1970s, making its first appearance in print in Italian in 1980, and in English in 1982. It is mentioned in a 1983 cookbook devoted to cooking of the Veneto. This suggests that it is a recent invention.

Obituaries for the restaurateur Ado Campeol (1928–2021) reported that it was invented at his restaurant Le Beccherie in Treviso on 24 December 1969 by his wife Alba di Pillo (1929–2021) and the pastry chef Roberto Linguanotto. The dish was added to its menu in 1972.

It has been claimed that tiramisu has aphrodisiac effects and was concocted by a 19th-century Treviso brothel madam, as the Accademia Del Tiramisù explains, to “solve the problems they may have had with their conjugal duties on their return to their wives”.

There is evidence of a “Tiremesù” semi-frozen dessert served by the Vetturino restaurant in Pieris, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia, since 1938. This may be the name’s origin, while the recipe for Tiramisu may have originated as a variation of another layered dessert, Zuppa Inglese. Others claim it was created towards the end of the 17th century in Siena in honour of Grand Duke Cosimo III.

On July 29, 2017, Tiramisu was entered by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies on the list of traditional Friulian and Giulian agri-food products in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. In 2013, Luca Zaia, governor of Veneto sought European Union Protected Status certification for the dessert, based on the ingredients used in 1970, so substitute ingredients, such as strawberrries, could not be used in a dish called tiramisu.

Original ingredients

Traditional tiramisu contains a short list of ingredients: ladyfingers (savoiardi), egg yolks, sugar, coffee, mascarpone cheese, and cocoa powder. A common variant involves soaking the savoiardi in alcohol, such as Marsala wine, amaretto or a coffee-based liqueur, but this is not mentioned in the original recipe. “The original shape of Tiramesù at Le Beccherie was circular.”

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE CREAM:

  • 4 large egg yolks
  • ½ cup/100 grams granulated sugar, divided
  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup/227 grams mascarpone (8 ounces)

FOR THE ASSEMBLY:

  • 1 ¾ cups good espresso or very strong coffee
  • 2 tablespoons rum or cognac
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  •  About 24 ladyfingers (from one 7-ounce/200-gram package)
  • 1 to 2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, for shaving (optional)

PREPARATION

  1. Using an electric mixer in a medium bowl, whip together egg yolks and 1/4 cup/50 grams sugar until very pale yellow and about tripled in volume. A slight ribbon should fall from the beaters (or whisk attachment) when lifted from the bowl. Transfer mixture to a large bowl, wiping out the medium bowl used to whip the yolks and set aside.
  2. In the medium bowl, whip cream and remaining 1/4 cup/50 grams sugar until it creates soft-medium peaks. Add mascarpone and continue to whip until it creates a soft, spreadable mixture with medium peaks. Gently fold the mascarpone mixture into the sweetened egg yolks until combined.
  3. Combine espresso and rum in a shallow bowl and set aside.
  4. Using a sifter, dust the bottom of a 2-quart baking dish (an 8×8-inch dish, or a 9-inch round cake pan would also work here) with 1 tablespoon cocoa powder.
  5. Working one at a time, quickly dip each ladyfinger into the espresso mixture — they are quite porous and will fall apart if left in the liquid too long — and place them rounded side up at the bottom of the baking dish. Repeat, using half the ladyfingers, until you’ve got an even layer, breaking the ladyfingers in half as needed to fill in any obvious gaps (a little space in between is O.K.). Spread half the mascarpone mixture onto the ladyfingers in one even layer. Repeat with remaining espresso-dipped ladyfingers and mascarpone mixture.
  6. Dust top layer with remaining tablespoon of cocoa powder. Top with shaved or finely grated chocolate, if desired.
  7. Cover with plastic wrap and let chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours (if you can wait 24 hours, all the better) before slicing or scooping to serve.

If you’ve never tried Tiguadege Na, please make sure to ask for it when you travel to Italy

Updated Malaysia entry requirements

Malaysia is relaxing virus restrictions including testing at airports and mask mandates, as infection rates flatten and the nation adjusts to living with Covid.

The country is scrapping mandatory testing on incoming vaccinated travellers and children under 12 from 1 May. Wearing masks outdoors will be made optional and social distancing measures dropped. Some entry restrictions will remain in place for unvaccinated travellers.

Malaysia entry requirements

Malaysia Airlines, the national carrier of Malaysia, welcomes the news. The airline is currently flying its MH1 and MH3 routes 11x weekly from London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (LHR-KUL) until 29 June and will return to its full double daily service from 30 June onwards.

Daniel Bainbridge, Regional Director UK & Europe, commented: “I am delighted to see that the Malaysian Government is removing all pre-entry and arrival testing requirements for fully vaccinated travellers. Malaysia Airlines is the only airline offering direct flights from the UK to Malaysia and international arrivals have increased dramatically since the border officially opened on 1 April. This further removal of entry requirements is an even clearer sign that Malaysia is fully open to the world, and Malaysia Airlines cannot wait to welcome more passengers onboard with our warm Malaysian hospitality.”

EVEN Hotel New York

EVEN Hotel New York – Times Square South

April 28, 2022 –

With wellness at its core, EVEN Hotels is part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ Premium Collection. In New York City, EVEN Hotel New York – Times Square South is a hub for business and leisure travelers with proximity to Madison Square Garden and the Empire State Building. We chat with the hotel’s General Manager John Beck who’s worked in the hospitality industry for more than 15 years.

EVEN Hotel New York

What has been your most memorable guest room request?
In addition to business travelers, we have many guests come to our hotel to celebrate an anniversary, milestone birthday, or get the whole family together to see Broadway shows and other popular NYC attractions. One of our most memorable guests proposed to their significant other at the Empire State Building on New Year’s Eve! We feel so honored to have played a small role in one of their biggest life moments.

What was the strangest item a guest forgot or left behind?
Guests are always leaving interesting things behind, but the strangest was in 2019 when the famous band, Phish, was playing a show at Madison Square Garden. A guest in town for the concert left an actual fish in their room. When the guest left, we kept him in our office and named him Fishy!

What was the most memorable reason for a stay or celebration?
We’ve recently been working with The Dream Factory, an organization that helps grant the wishes of critical and chronically ill children. It’s extremely special to be a part of their experience, and our team is dedicated to pulling out all the stops for the families during their stay.

EVEN Hotel New York – We get a lot of popular fitness influencers who love posting about their journey, and our hotel is the perfect fit to provide them with a nicely balanced wellness stay while on vacation. And due to our proximity to Madison Square Garden, we have hosted quite a few big-name musical talents! It’s safe to say if an artist is performing at our neighboring venue, there’s a likely chance they may be staying with us.

Cool hotel features that guests don’t know about?
As IHG Hotels & Resorts’ wellness-minded brand designed for business and leisure travelers, many of our guests love the in-room fitness zones giving them the freedom to work out in the comfort of their own room. There are also many attractions, restaurants and shopping within walking distance – which is always well-received by our guests!

The moment you were most proud of the brand?
EVEN Hotel New York – Times Square South is the first new-build EVEN property. We had the opportunity to improve and revise the early brand standards to be more adaptable to expansion. We are proud of the role we have had in shaping our brand!

What is your favorite place to visit outside of the hotel?
One of our most asked questions tends to center around where to find the best bagel in NYC. So, we’ve had a lot of fun “researching” all the options around us to be bagel experts. We also love visiting Hudson Yards, which is a short walk and constantly has new exhibits and events.

EVEN Hotel New York

Any other fun fact you’d like people to know about the hotel?
We are the twice recipient of the IHG Torchbearer Award, which is given to hotels that have achieved the highest level of excellence in all aspects of operation – from quality to customer satisfaction. We take a lot of pride in our guest experience and held the top spot for all NYC hotels on TripAdvisor for 6 months after opening and have remained in the top 5% since.

If you had to pick your favorite guest room, which would it be and why?
Room 2400 is our favorite room; it’s on a higher floor with floor-to-ceiling windows and even a window in the shower! It has a great view of the Hudson River, Freedom Tower, The Edge and Empire State Building!

What’s your most favorite F&B offering and why?
Our onsite restaurant, has an expansive menu with well-balanced options. There is no better way to start the day in the big apple than with our favorite menu item, the Salmon Board with a NY Bagel. For a night cap we recommend the Mixed Berry Mojito; it’s fun and fruity!

How would you define the hotel in three words?
Energizing, Welcoming, Modern

Where can people book their stay?
Discover EVEN Hotel New York – Times Square South for yourself and book your big apple adventure here. Room rates from US$217.55 per night*

*IHG One Rewards members have access to our lowest rates, and can earn more points faster and gain rewards sooner. Lotte New York Palace

Lotte New York Palace extends Lotte hotel brand power

Lotte New York Palace

Lotte New York Palace extends Lotte hotel brand power

April 27, 2022 –

LOTTE NEW YORK PALACE. Originally built as the mansion for Henry Villard, a prominent financier with railroad construction business in 1882, it now stands as a historic landmark in Midtown Manhattan.

Lotte New York Palace

With over 140 years history, LOTTE NEW YORK PALACE was acquired by LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS, the largest hotel group in South Korea in 2015, and continues to prove its eminence. This was also the first time for a Korean hotel brand to make its debut in New York, which drew big interest and expectation within the hospitality industry.

The 55-story hotel feature total 909 guest rooms and 23 banquet halls in The Palace (The Villard Houses), of which the neo-Italian Renaissance style from the 19th century still remain, and The Towers behind it. From the 41st to 51st floors of this luxury hotel, boasting incomparable size even in NYC, sits modern suites. Amongst them, the triplex penthouse, the Champagne Suite is iconic to the hotel. Upon entrance to the suite inspired by the finest Champagne, Dom Pérignon, a shimmering crystal pendant chandelier designed to invoke the effervescent champagne bubble cates the eyes. The interior welcomes guests with a Nouveau Nero marble floor leading to a double-story Grand Parlour surrounded by floor to ceiling windows. The master and queen suites take design inspiration from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with expressions of leather and deep rose tones. The Champagne cave, the only one of its kind in NYC, provides a rustic experience for guests directly adjacent to the dining room.

Another iconic suite is the Jewel Suite, designed in collaboration with acclaimed jewelry designer Martin Katz. The suite opens with a two-story cascading crystal chandelier and five sculptural crystal jewel boxes, personally curated by Martin Katz. The suite gleams from the reflection, as if one is inside the jewel box. The master and double bedrooms reflect the jeweled theme in opulent, upscale furnishings complete with a master bath and guest bath, respectively.

Both terrace levels of the Champagne and the Jewel Suites house wood burning fireplaces and custom designed hot tubs where guests can enjoy unobstructed city view. The hotel is deeply ingrained with artistic features, not to mention the sculptures and paintings of the gold room and the drawing room.

The hotel was much more upgraded after the acquisition by LOTTE. Firstly, all staff above the director level from the previous New York Palace hotel were invited to Korea and were given Korean-styled hospitality service training based on LOTTE HOTELS’ expertise of over 40 years. In general, organizational restructuring is conducted after acquisition, whereas LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS made almost no changes to the existing manpower. Furthermore, by hosting significant global events such as the UN General Assembly and national summits, and by being known as the hotel that the U.S. presidents stay, LOTTE HOTEL’s investment continues to prosper.

LOTTE NEW YORK PALACE continues to enhance the brand power of LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS in NYC, the global area for international chain hotels, such as being honoured by the prestigious travel magazine, Condé Nast Traveler’s 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards, and being accoladed by the Forbes Travel Guide, the so-called the hotel version of Michelin Guide, as the 2021 Recommended Hotel.

Norwegian Bliss launches Alaskan cruise season

April 26, 2022 –

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has kicked off its 2022 Alaskan cruise season with Norwegian Bliss from Port of Seattle. This is the first ship to visit Alaska this season, as well as the first of five the group’s vessels to cruise the Last Frontier through October 2022.

Alaskan cruise season

The vessel will provide travellers with immersive experiences through Southeast Alaska, visiting natural wonders including the passage through the 25-million-acre World Heritage Site, Glacier Bay National Park. NCL was granted access to this natural wonder due to the company’s environmental commitments focused on air emissions, waste and wildlife protection. Other once-in-a-lifetime sites guests may visit include the majestic Mendenhall Glacier, which lies nearly 12 miles outside Juneau, Alaska and the Misty Fiords National Monument near Ketchikan, Alaska, a glacier-carved wilderness featuring snowcapped mountains and waterfalls.

NCL has a long history of cruising from Seattle to Alaska, having pioneered the route in 2001. The company is deeply committed to the region working with destination partners in Seattle and Alaska to drive immersive and responsible tourism. In conjunction with Port of Seattle, NCL Holdings, NCL’s parent company, invested $30 million to upgrade Pier 66, the renowned site where Norwegian Bliss was christened in 2018. The dual investment expanded the check-in area by 300 percent to more than 150,000 square feet. It also expanded two new passenger boarding bridges to provide a more comfortable and efficient embarkation process.

Harry Sommer, President and Chief Executive Officer, Norwegian Cruise Line said: “We have nearly three decades of history cruising Alaska, pioneering voyages to the Last Frontier from Seattle more than 22 years ago and christened the largest cruise ship in Seattle in 2018 with the debut of Norwegian Bliss. We could not be any prouder to return to our ‘second home’ and jumpstart the 2022 Alaska season with one of our most innovative ships and provide unforgettable guest experiences with some of the world’s most bucket list destinations.” Alaskan cruise season

Driving economic support in Alaska, the company partnered with and invested in Ward Cove Dock Group, transforming land, formerly designated as a superfund cleanup, or contaminated land, by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), into a sustainable, environmentally friendly and entertaining site for the community and cruise visitors.

Norwegian Cruise Line won ‘World’s Leading Cruise Line’ at World Travel Awards 2021

Through a partnership with the Alaska Native-owned Huna Totem Corporation, The company was able to complete a second cruise pier at Icy Strait Point, as well as expand the destination’s Wilderness Landing. Enhancements featured upgraded retail, and restaurants, as well as shore excursion offerings, including the world’s largest ZipRider zip line, and experiences highlighting the culture of the native Huna Tlingit people.

In 2021, as part of NCL’s Great Cruise Comeback to celebrate the restart of its operations, the brand restarted its U.S. voyages from Seattle to Alaska making its first call to Icy Strait Point and also officially welcoming the opening of the new Wilderness Landing pier and the first of two gondola systems to be completed as part of the joint investment between NCLH and Huna Totem.

Hong Kong will allow non-residents to enter the financial hub from May for the first time in more than two years, a small step in unwinding stringent coronavirus restrictions which have turned the city into one of the world’s most isolated places.

Hong Kong’s rules for airlines that carry infected COVID-19 patients will also be eased slightly, the government said in a statement on Friday (Apr 22), with the threshold for suspending incoming flights rising to five infected passengers from three currently. Foreign travellers will be subjected to the same procedure as residents, the government said. The announcement comes with daily infections less than 1000 for more than a week from a peak of more than 70,000 on March 3.

Czech Republic travel restrictions eased for travellers

Travellers will no longer need to fill in an arrival form or submit proof of vaccination or a previous infection when returning from abroad. However, it is still recommended travellers to verify the conditions of transport (including proof of infectivity, i.e. test, vaccination, illness) directly with the agreed public transport carrier (plane, bus, train).

Jan Herget, director at CzechTourism, said: “The Czech Republic has maintained its place in the world’s top ten – between Ireland and Canada. This topic is important in the marketing communication of the destination across segments, both towards the tourists themselves and especially at the level of B2B marketing, when it is necessary to assure our partners from large travel agencies or conference organisers that the Czech Republic is an objectively safe place for their clients.”
