February 18, 2022 – Aida Cruises has started the new year with a high demand for cruises.

Aida Cruises looks ahead to strong summer season

In particular, bookings for spring and summer 2022 are developing “very positively,” the line said, but interest in cruises for the upcoming winter sailings and the 2023 summer program is also at a “high level”.

“Aida Cruises is well prepared for the positive response.

“At the beginning of summer, 12 Aida ships will be underway again, offering vacation trips to the most beautiful European destinations,” explained Alexander Ewig, senior vice president marketing and sales at AIDA Cruises.

It is already the second LNG cruise ship from Aida Cruises to be powered by liquefied natural gas, currently the lowest-emission fossil fuel.

Following the inauguration ceremony of AIDAcosma on April 9th in Hamburg, voyages in the western Mediterranean to La Spezia/Florence, Rome, Barcelona and Corsica are on the program of the one-week highlight itinerary Mediterranean Treasures until October.

With AIDAaura will resume cruise operations on May 7th.

Voyages with AIDAvita have, however, been cancelled until at least May.

“The strong bookings show the great trust of our guests to be able to realise their vacation dream for the summer with us on board,” Ewig added.

Virgin Voyages celebrates grand opening of New Terminal V in Miami

February 16, 2022 – Virgin Voyages, Richard Branson’s epic new cruise line, celebrated the long-awaited grand opening of Terminal V at PortMiami yesterday, ringing in the occasion with a mermaid-studded soiree.

Both ships will sail on a mix of multi-night itineraries to some of the most irresistible destinations in the Caribbean, each with a stop at Virgin Voyages’ signature Beach Club in Bimini.

Sir Richard Branson, joined by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Virgin Voyages’ CEO Tom McAlpin, made a splash with a memorable ribbon cutting ceremony marked by mermaid aerialists and a grand entrance via Virgin branded electric Moke vehicles.

Virgin Voyages celebrates grand opening of New Terminal V

With a street address of 718 N Cruise Blvd. – cleverly earmarked to celebrate Sir Richard Branson’s birthday on July 18 – the opening of Virgin Voyages’ own cruise terminal represents a major milestone in the brand’s history and the first time Scarlet Lady sailed from her new home.

“Coming to this beautiful new terminal and seeing Scarlet Lady in her home port here in Miami has been such an incredible experience. The team at Virgin Voyages has created a stunning building that delivers on our commitment to being better stewards of the earth with its LEED Gold Certification,” said Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group.

Terminal V, an impressive three-story building on the northwestern corner of PortMiami, brings even more magic to the city with its unobstructed skyline views of Biscayne Bay, downtown and Edgewater. Yesterday, a little more than one year after the groundbreaking ceremony, Virgin Voyages invited local city officials and brand partners to celebrate the grand opening of the 132,000 square foot structure.

“We’ve always strived to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, and Terminal V gives us greater opportunity to elevate the Sailor experience from the moment you see the AHOY sign to the time you disembark. Scarlet Lady deserves a home as beautiful as she is, and we cannot wait for our Sailors to begin their voyage at Terminal V,” said Virgin Voyages’ CEO, Tom McAlpin.

The geometric design, a palm grove where land meets sea, was inspired by Miami’s iconic palm trees and the area’s historical origins (formerly used for harvesting coconuts). The concept was developed by the award-winning, global architecture and landscape firm Arquitectonica and built from the ground up by Suffolk Construction. Terminal V’s rooftop resembles the edges of a palm canopy with angular cutouts that allow natural light to stream through. Enveloped by more than 1,000 palm trees, Terminal V features soaring floor-to-ceiling windows, natural skylights, and lush indoor landscaping that offers Sailors both a grand and warm welcome on their voyage.

Further inspired by the brand’s design ethos of the “Modern Romance of Sailing,” Terminal V’s interiors give a nod to mid-century design and are punctuated with emerald and ruby jewel tones. The space also incorporates changing LED screens, local artwork by the nonprofit organization Art in Public Places, and an al fresco terrace for Sailors to take in the sea breeze before embarkation. Outside, an expansive “Sail the Virgin Way” sign and dramatic red lighting mirror the city’s lights.

Every Sailor is treated like a RockStar at Virgin Voyages, but for Sailors who’ve booked suite accommodations, they’ll gain access to Terminal V’s VIP entrance, expedited security screening and an exclusive pre-boarding lounge. The new cruise terminal also features a special Crew-only lounge where Virgin Voyages’ team can unwind, further demonstrating the brand’s commitment to creating the best gig ever for its employees. Rounding out the design are designated areas for drop offs, ride sharing and provisioning, all working together to provide a seamless shore-to-ship experience.

Terminal V illustrates Virgin Voyages’ commitment to preserving the environment, protecting our oceans and fulfilling its mission of creating an “Epic Sea Change for All” as one of the only LEED Gold certified buildings in PortMiami. Materials were meticulously selected with sustainability in mind, from the color of the pavers in the entrance way to the glass. Even the air conditioning and electrical systems were planned to reduce Terminal V’s impact on the planet.

Scarlet Lady, Virgin Voyages’ first ship and the winner of Cruise Critic’s “Best New Cruise Ship for 2021” Award, will call Terminal V her home year-round while Valiant Lady will join in the winter of 2022.

February 16, 2022 – Costa cruises restarts with entire fleet

Starting next summer the entire Costa Cruises’ fleet will resume operations, with the four most innovative ships to be deployed in the Mediterranean and free shore excursions.

Costa Cruises restarts and continues its gradual restart plan for 2022.  From 5 March, the date on which the new Costa Toscana, star of the recent edition of the Sanremo Music Festival, will set sail for her first cruise, an increasing number of the company’s ships will return to service, joining those already sailing.

Costa cruises restarts

Next summer, the company’s entire fleet will resume operations, with all four of the new ships delivered in recent months – Costa Toscana, Costa Smeralda, Costa Firenze and Costa Venezia – deployed in the Mediterranean. Also, for the summer period, with the hope of favorable regulations, the company is planning to carry out again shore excursions in free mode, and, in light of the gradual relaxation of the measures in place, is working to be able to make them already available as early as this spring.

Costa cruises restarts: Costa’s program includes a total of more than 1,800 cruises from spring 2022 to winter 2022-23, allowing guests to discover 179 destinations around the world, with cruises lasting from 3 to 127 days.
All these cruises will feature the new product innovations the company has been working on in recent months, with an innovative range of shore excursions and an outstanding gastronomic offer featuring world-class chefs.

“We are seeing the growth in demand for holidays, and I am sure that this trend will increase further in the coming weeks” – said Roberto Alberti, SVP & Chief Commercial Officer of Costa Cruises. “We think our offer is the best ever, thanks to elements that combine unique experiences, both onboard and ashore. Our rich itinerary program suits for every need and includes some great new features, such as cruises to Turkey. Our cruise experience has been profoundly enriched and will allow guests to discover destinations in an authentic way, also thanks to extended stops in some ports. Furthermore, our guests will be able to enjoy their vacations on a fleet with latest generation ships, which combine sustainable innovation with entertainment, hospitality and well-being”.

After Costa Toscana, Costa cruises restarts program includes Costa Favolosa on April 28, with “mini cruises” in the Mediterranean, Costa Venezia on May 1 from Istanbul, with a new and unique one-week itinerary in Turkey and Greece, and Costa Smeralda on May 7, offering a one-week itinerary in the western Mediterranean. Costa Pacifica will resume operations on June 4 from Bari, exploring Greece and Malta.  The two-week cruises to the Canary Islands and the Azores, originally planned with the Costa Pacifica in April and May, will be carried out by Costa Luminosa, while Costa Fortuna will return operating in Northern Europe on June 12.

After the winter season in South America, Costa Diadema will also return to the Mediterranean, offering a cruise to Lisbon on May 5, as well as Costa Fascinosa, which will be leaving on May 1 for a cruise to the Azores, dedicated to Costa Club members. Back from the Caribbean, Costa Deliziosa will resume her Mediterranean cruises from April 15, while Costa Firenze, having completed her season in Dubai, will be positioned in Genoa on April 7, to begin her program of cruises in Spain, Italy and France.

In summer 2022, the sister ships Costa Smeralda and Costa Toscana, powered by liquefied natural gas, together with the Costa Firenze, will offer week-long cruises in the western Mediterranean, while Costa Venezia will continue with her new itinerary in Turkey and Greece, departing from Istanbul. Costa Pacifica, Costa Deliziosa and Costa Luminosa will be operating in the Eastern Mediterranean with one-week cruises.  Four ships, Costa Fortuna, Costa Favolosa, Costa Fascinosa and Costa Diadema, will be deployed in Northern Europe, visiting the Baltic capitals, the Norwegian fjords, the North Cape and Iceland.

The ships of the Costa fleet will take guests to discover the most beautiful destinations in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe in safety, thanks to the Costa Safety Protocol, the health protocol developed by the company together with scientific experts and the authorities.

In 2021 we safely recorded on our ships more than 1.5 million passenger movements, achieving a truly unique and exceptional record considering the context in which we operated. We also reached previously unprecedented levels of customer satisfaction, thanks to the efforts and investments we have made since the restart of our operations. I am confident that the return to free shore excursions, which we are planning for next summer and which we hope can be anticipated as early as next spring, will be an extra incentive to choose a Costa cruise” – added Roberto Alberti.

Costa’s program will be rich and complete also in winter 2022-23. Costa Firenze will be deployed on week-long cruises to the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman, departing from Dubai. Costa Venezia will be operating from Istanbul, with 11-day cruises to Turkey, Israel and Egypt, while Costa Diadema will be offering two-week cruises to the Canary Islands, calling also in Lisbon. Costa Pacifica and Costa Fascinosa will be visiting the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. Costa Smeralda will be offering one-week cruises in the western Mediterranean. Costa Toscana, Costa Favolosa and Costa Fortuna will be positioned in South America.

From next winter, Costa’s grand voyages will also be back. Costa Deliziosa will be offering the Around the World cruise, departing from Venice on January 6, 2023, or from Savona January 11, 2023. The itinerary will take guests to India and the Maldives, then to South Africa and Namibia, and then to South America, up the continent’s Pacific coast, through the Panama Strait and even visiting New York before returning to Europe.  The Costa Luminosa Grand Cruises will be equally spectacular, departing from Genoa on 8 January 2023 and from Buenos Aires on 27 February 2023, going from the Mediterranean to Tierra del Fuego and back, sailing up the Amazon River to Manaus.

Costa Serena’s program to resume cruising in Asia in 2022 will be announced over the next few weeks.

February 10, 2022 – Emerald Cruises has taken delivery of Emerald Azzurra, the first of two new superyachts.

Emerald Azzurra to make Red Sea debut

Departing Ha Long Shipyard in Vietnam earlier, the 100-guest yacht is headed to Aqaba in Jordan to welcome guests on board its inaugural sailing on March 11th.

The vessel will initially offer an eight-day sailing in the Red Sea.

After its inaugural sailing, Emerald Azzurra will transit the Suez Canal to embark on a series of sailings in the Mediterranean and along the Adriatic coast over the summer.

Glen Moroney, founder and chairman, Emerald parent Scenic Group, commented: “Today marks a major moment for our team at Emerald Cruises as the first in our fleet of ocean-going superyachts takes a giant step towards completion.

“We look forward to welcoming our first guests on board Emerald Azzurra and we are confident she will exceed all expectations.

“The demand has been unprecedented with her inaugural season almost fully sold.”

He added: “Her sister yacht – Emerald Sakara – will follow early next year, providing double the opportunities for guests to join us on board our ground-breaking vessels.”

A first for yacht cruising, Emerald Azzurra features an innovative infrared sauna for longer, relaxing guest experiences.

Of the 50 luxuriously appointed suites, more than 88 per cent of them boast balconies, with more space per guest than similar vessels of her size.

Emerald had initially hoped to launch the vessel last summer, but plans were delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

January 31, 2022 – Viking has seen its newest ship for the Nile River – the 82-guest Viking Osiris – floated out, marking a major construction milestone and the first time the ship has touched water.

Viking Osiris floats out ahead of Egypt debut

Set to debut in August, the vessel will sail the bestselling 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary.

The arrival of Viking’s new ship later this year coincides with several key events in Egypt in 2022, including the highly- anticipated opening of the new Grand Egyptian Museum outside Cairo on the Giza Plateau.

There is also the bicentenary of the decipherment of hieroglyphs and the 100th anniversary of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter and his benefactor, the fifth Earl of Carnarvon, to look forward to.

Building on Viking’s longstanding relationship with the Carnarvon family, guests who sail on board Viking Osiris will experience Privileged Access to memories from 1922 and the events surrounding the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

“This rings as true today as it did a century ago and is what we continue to hear from the guests who are currently sailing with us on the Nile, as well as the many we have hosted in the last year,” said Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking.

“We are proud to be the only western company to build, own and operate ships on the Nile, and we will always maintain our commitment to creating meaningful experiences that are focused on the destination.

“Particularly during this milestone year for Egypt, we look forward to welcoming guests on board Viking Osiris and introducing them to the country’s many cultural treasures.”

The traditional float out ceremony took place at Massara shipyard in Cairo, and is significant because it denotes a ship moving into its final stage of construction.

The trips, calling at Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sir Bani Yas in the United Arab Emirates and Doha in Qatar, will be on offer from April through to the end of June.

MSC Virtuosa has been sailing in this region since November and on finishing the winter season, will undertake a Grand Voyage back to Europe to homeport in Southampton, UK for the summer season.

Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas

In line with its Royal Promise and regulations stipulated by the Singapore government, Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas continues to implement health and safety measures for the well-being of its guests and crew members, and the destinations it visits. The comprehensive, multilayered set of measures include pre-departure wellness screenings and testing, contactless embarkation and debarkation, enhanced ventilation and sanitization on board, as well as sailing with fully vaccinated crew members and guests. The cruise line will continue to evaluate and update its measures as circumstances evolve with various government and health authorities.

Guests who book their vacation on Spectrum on or before March 31, 2022, can be assured of flexibility in their plans with Royal Caribbean’s Cruise with Confidence program, which allows for changes and cancellations up to 48 hours before their cruise sets sail. As long as holidaymakers cancel at least 48 hours before their sail date, they will receive a Future Cruise Credit. The credit is valid for future bookings on or before Sept. 30, 2022, for sailings departing before Dec. 31, 2022, or one year from the original sailing date, whichever is later.

January 24, 2022 –Holland America line flexible cancellation plan extended

Cruise line will continue to operate vaccinated voyages with enhanced COVID-19 protocols

Holland America Line is giving consumers the confidence to make travel plans through the summer with the extension of its Flexible Cancellation Plan to Sept. 30, 2022. As part of its “Worry-Free Promise,” Holland America Line also will continue to implement best practices for COVID-19 health safety including operating vaccinated cruises and requiring a medically-supervised negative  COVID-19 test prior to cruising.

Holland America line flexible cancellation plan extended

Holland America line flexible cancellation plan extended to give travelers the confidence to book a Summer Cruise”

Under the Holland America line flexible cancellation plan extended version, which was originally offered for cruises departing through the end of April, guests who make a new booking by March 31, 2022, for itineraries that depart on or before Sept. 30, can cancel for any reason and receive a Future Cruise Credit in the amount of any cancellation fees that normally would be incurred. Cancellations must be made up to 30 days before departure. Additionally, final payments for cruises through May 31, 2022, are due at 60 days instead of 75 or 90.

“We want our guests to feel confident when they book a cruise,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line. “We’ve seen so much excitement from guests who have cruised with us since our return. We want everyone who is looking forward to that next adventure to feel comfortable making those plans, and our ‘Worry-Free Promise’ offers that comfort.”

For additional reassurance, Holland America Line’s Cancellation Protection Program can be purchased for new cruises or Alaska Cruisetour bookings or existing bookings as long as it is purchased before the date cancellation fees begin to accrue. Offered as a Standard or Platinum plan, guests can cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before cruise departure with Standard and right up to departure under Platinum and receive refunds between 80% to 90% of eligible amounts paid. The cost varies by cruise fare and is nonrefundable.

Cruise Healthy and Safe with TravelWell
Holland America Line will continue to operate with health and safety protocols for COVID-19 guided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization and the company’s medical team and health experts.

“By operating our cruises with protocols that are based on the latest advice and guidance of our global experts, we have seen a very low rate of cases, and in almost all instances, with mild or no symptoms,” Antorcha said. “We will keep these best practices in place because we know they are working to protect our guests, our crew, our homeports and the communities we visit.”

Those protocols include:

  • Guests must have received their final dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the beginning of the cruise and bring proof of vaccination; Holland America Line is strongly encouraging all eligible guests to receive COVID-19 boosters.
  • Guests must show proof of a negative viral COVID-19 test (PCR or antigen) taken within two days of embarkation.
  • Guests are required to wear masks in indoor areas, except when eating or drinking or in their stateroom. Holland America Line is recommending the use of higher-grade masks indoors (surgical or KN95).
  • Crew members are vaccinated for COVID-19 and are receiving a booster when eligible; KN95 masks are worn by shipboard teams at all times.

Holland America Line returned to cruising in July 2021 following the industrywide pause with ships in operation in the Caribbean, Mexico and California coast, having successfully completed seasons in Alaska and the Mediterranean. The remaining ships will restart cruising in spring 2022.

Tallinn welcomes new multifunctional cruise terminal

Tallinn_cruise

January 20 2022 – Located in the hustle and bustle of the biggest port authority in Estonia, the Port of Tallinn has opened the most modern and multifunctional terminal in the region.

Tallinn welcomes new multifunctional cruise terminal

Beautifully designed to reduce its negative impact on the environment, the sustainable cruise terminal can operate outside of cruise season, making the capital more accessible while reducing its environmental footprint.

A striking feature of the terminal – designed by Salto Architects – is the remarkable use of Kebony, a global leader in the production of sustainable wood, which was selected for the expansive decking and to clad the imaginative exterior.

The vast scale of the project allows for the terminal to be used to host events, such as concerts and conferences, accommodating up to 2,000 people.

The generous size also means that, even during the peak cruise season, some level of social distancing will be possible if required due to Covid-19.

Featuring tiered outdoor seating, visitors can enjoy the scenic ocean views at the highest point of the terminal.

Based in Norway, Kebony is a global leader in producing sustainable wood materials, which made it the perfect solution for this innovative project.

It created an elegant exterior which complements both the structural design and the oceanic surroundings.

January 18 2022 -Viking Neptune floats out in Italy

Viking has announced its newest ocean ship – the 930-guest Viking Neptune – has been floated out, marking a major construction milestone and the first time the ship has touched water.

Viking Neptune

Set to debut in November, Viking Neptune will spend her maiden season sailing itineraries in the Mediterranean before embarking on the 2023-2024 Viking World Cruise.

The journey from Fort Lauderdale to London spans 138 days, 28 countries and 57 ports, with overnight stays in 11 cities.

“It is always a special day when a new ship meets water for the first time, and we look forward to welcoming guests on board the Viking Neptune this fall.

“Together with Fincantieri we have built the world’s most elegant vessels, which truly allow our guests to explore the world in comfort,” said Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking.

“We are marking several milestones in 2022, including our 25th anniversary and the tenth year since starting our ocean project.

“With the arrival of the Viking Neptune and her identical sister ship, the Viking Mars, this year—along with the debut of our two new expedition ships and new river ships—we are proud to firmly establish Viking as the leading small ship travel company.”

The traditional float out ceremony took place at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard and is significant because it denotes a ship moving into its final stage of construction.

Following a two-day process that will set Viking Neptune afloat, she will then be moved to a nearby outfitting dock for final construction and interior build-out.

Norwegian Cruise Line reveals Norwegian Viva

Norwegian Cruise Line viva

January 13 2022 -Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has unveiled plans for Norwegian Viva, the next ship in the Prima Class.

Norwegian Cruise Line reveals Norwegian Viva

Providing guests with “elevated experiences” including more wide-open spaces, thoughtful design and service, the ship will begin sailing Mediterranean itineraries in June next year.

She will be homeporting in southern European port cities including Lisbon, Portugal; Venice (Trieste) and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy; and Athens (Piraeus), Greece.

Norwegian Viva will then sail the southern Caribbean for her 2023-2024 winter season, offering warm-weather getaways from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Similarly to sister ship Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Viva will be built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in Marghera, Italy.

She will debut at 965 feet long, 142,500 gross tons and accommodate 3,219 guests at double occupancy.

Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line, said: “Norwegian Viva sets the standard in the premium segment, illustrating our commitment to pushing boundaries in four main areas: wide open space, service that puts guests first, thoughtful design and experiences beyond expectation.

“We have taken everything our guests love to the next level with this brand-new class of ships designed with them in mind.”

Norwegian Viva will boast eye-catching hull art designed by Italian graffiti and sculpture artist Manuel Di Rita, commonly known as “Peeta,” who also illustrated the exceptional hull design on Norwegian Prima.

“Norwegian Viva, the second of six Prima Class vessels being built with us, reinforces the great collaboration between Norwegian Cruise Line and Fincantieri,” said Luigi Matarazzo, general manager, merchant ships division, at Fincantieri.

“We were extremely satisfied that Norwegian Prima, the first of the new class, earned record-breaking bookings and we are excited to see how Norwegian Viva will live up to her sister ship.

“As we proved our resilience during these challenging times, this announcement represents another testament to Fincantieri´s global leadership role in the cruise sector.”

Royal Shakespeare Company signs Cunard partnership

January 13 2022 – Royal Shakespeare Company signs Cunard partnership.

Cunard will be taking Shakespeare and new work to the high seas in 2022, as it joins forces in a first-of-its-kind partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) to bring world-class theatre to its transatlantic stage.

Available exclusively on-board Queen Mary 2, guests will enjoy tailored theatrical performances by the RSC, which creates captivating theatre by Shakespeare, his contemporaries and other literary legends past and present.

The performances will be available for all guests on board the flagship, including a unique blend of Shakespeare’s iconic love scenes in a brand-new piece called Boundless as the Sea, created by Owen Horsley.

Guests will also have the opportunity to see critically acclaimed new work from the RSC with Miss Littlewood: a musical by Sam Kenyon exploring the life of one of theatre’s most playful and radical figures, making its transatlantic debut.

Guests will also be able to access ‘Shakespeare Tales,’ intimate, informal events where the actors will perform their personal favourite sonnets and speeches, and answer questions from the audience.

Cruise Ship Spas

blank

Cruise ship spas

January 05 2022 – Cruise Ship Spas.

To wash away last year’s stress and anxiety, luxury travelers are heading back to the high seas for a much-needed getaway. Increasingly, they’re also looking for therapeutic indulgences — a soothing massage or facial, a wellness activity, acupuncture or a medi-spa treatment.

Fortunately, pampering cruise ship spas await — many on the newest luxury cruise ships setting sail this year. Other spas are on the drawing board for razzle-dazzle new ships launching in 2022 or 2023, and other ships have redesigned or enhanced spas. Here’s a sampling of luxury cruise ship spas that await.

What’s On Offer

With its next new ship, the 750-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur, on the horizon for a late 2023 debut, Regent Seven Seas Cruiseslast month also restarted cruise operations with the 750-passenger Seven Seas Explorer. The ship is now repositioning to PortMiami and will operate a season of Caribbean voyages between mid-November 2021 and March 2022.

An enclave of tranquility aboard Seven Seas Explorer is the Serene Spa & Wellness space, which offers treatments originating from the hundreds of destinations to which the cruise line sails. Guests have such restorative and body nourishing options as an Elemis facial, massage, manicure, pedicure, other restorative treatments, as well as a luxury Kerastase salon service. Plus, guests can experience the wellness aspect in culinary and shore excursion choices too.

For the ultimate in pampering, we’d recommend the full body “Regent Massage,” which involves a mixture of rosemary, sea funnel and Mediterranean sea buckhorn being worked into areas of body tension to soothe and detoxify muscles. The experience is enhanced by warm, eucalyptus-infused paraffin mitts and boots which nourish and hydrate the guest’s hands and feet.

One blissful treatment we also like is the 50-minute “Calming Rose Facial,” which is designed to comfort sensitive skin with a natural blend of rose absolute to hydrate the dermis. Rose extracts are used to smooth fine lines and a warm rose balm is massaged onto the guest’s hands and arms (think “pure relaxation”) and the result is smooth skin that’s soft as a rose petal.

Seven Seas Explorer also has a jogging track and robust fitness center. Guests who are 16 and older can enter the fitness center and use its spinning bikes, weights, treadmills, Technogym Strength Machines and work-out mats. One-on-one training can be arranged too.

The new 596-passenger Silver Moon, Silversea Cruises’ newest vessel, is now sailing the ocean blue and has a redesigned spa and fitness center with a large thermal area, relaxation area and gym. But Luxury Travel Advisor is highly anticipating the launch of the ultra-luxury line’s next new vessel, Silver Dawn, setting sail in spring 2022, as that sister vessel will offer a pioneering new wellness program called Otium.

Drawing from the line’s Italian heritage, “otium” in Roman culture and lifestyle was the opposite of “negotium” (the nonexistence of pleasure). In contrast, “otium” was a period of time that Romans devoted to leisure — bathing, conversing, theorizing, drinking, eating and relaxing.

So, diverging from many cruise ship existing wellness programs, Otium encourages balanced indulgence, pampering, and pleasure over sacrifice and delayed gratification. The view is that wellness should be a natural, enjoyable part of the day; that living well and being well are not mutually exclusive; and that wellness need not be a solitary, silent experience, but rather a social pursuit that is best enjoyed with others.

The Otium Spa Experience will begin with Silversea’s redesign of the spa and a highly selective treatment menu, designed by wellness experts for optimum relaxation. Beyond the massages and other pampering treatments, guests will unwind and socialize in the spa’s thermal areas with a glass of champagne or signature snacks enriched with such ingredients as caviar and truffles.

Crystal’s newest ship, the expeditionary 200-passenger Crystal Endeavor is a robust explorer that begins Antarctica cruises this month. It carries 18 Zodiacs, 14 sea kayaks and a two-guest (plus the pilot) submersible. Led by a team of veteran guides and naturalist experts, cruisers can head out for wildlife and marine life viewing, Zodiac landings ashore, kayaking adventures and much more.

But when travelers return to the ship or simply need a day’s relaxation, the full-service Crystal Life Salon & Spa and state-of-the-art Fitness Center offers relaxation and pampering. How about a 75-minute Hot Mineral Body Boost,” in which guests lie on the line’s famed “Amber and Quartz Crystal” bed? Heated minerals warm and relax the body, soothing Amber balm is applied and a restorative facial massage completes the treatment.

A 50-minute “Coconut Poultice Massage,” a 50-minute “Elemis High Performance Skin Energizer,” or for tired legs after a long hike ashore, the 40-minute “Ionithermie Revitalizing Leg Therapy” are among dozens of other options. Cruisers can also arrange for acupuncture, medi-spa treatments or personal training or attend pure-form yoga or pilates sessions.

Seabourn soon will have two new PC6 Polar Class expedition ships in the water — Seabourn Venture, slated for a March 2022 delivery, and Seabourn Pursuit, scheduled for a February 2023 delivery. Each will carry two custom-built submarines, 24 Zodiacs, kayaks, and a 26-person expedition team to engage guests throughout each voyage.

But the beauty of an ultra-luxury ship is that there is plenty of attention paid to relaxation and pampering too. Occupying a space all its own on Deck 7, Seabourn Venture’s 3,700-square-foot Spa & Wellness space been designed by Adam D. Tihany, as has the ship’s yoga and fitness areas, which offer floor-to-ceiling sea views. The spa’s sauna will also offer floor-to-ceiling windows, a new design amenity for Seabourn and unique to its expedition ships

Sleek and serene, the Spa & Wellness space will reflect the concept of a contemporary “floating forest,” with such details as a textured tree-inspired art mural, light wood-and-bronze material palette, live wood features and natural stone flooring. Design-wise, “branches of the floating forest” will spread into four tranquil treatment rooms, each with neutral, textured wall coverings, light wood, and bronze accents.

Cruisers can select from massages for face and body, plus detox, cleansing and wrap services. Within the spa, a fitness center will offer cardio and strength equipment as well as a fitness director to offer assessments and train guests in fitness regimes.

Seabourn’s guests also can enhance their physical, social, environmental and spiritual wellbeing through the line’s onboard Mindful Living Program: Spa & Wellness with Dr. Andrew Weil. Led by a Mindful Living Coach, the program will offer a holistic mind-and-body approach to wellbeing. Luxury Travel Advisor would suggest guests participate in the complimentary yoga and guided meditation sessions, as well as attend seminars on such topics as nutrition, integrative medicine, pain management and creative aging.

Pampering Enclaves

Viking’s ninth oceangoing ship, the new, 930-passenger Viking Saturn will join the Viking fleet in early 2023 and sail new itineraries in Scandinavian and Nordic countries. The line’s ships offer modern Scandinavian design and similar spaces from ship to ship; guests essentially know what to expect and like it that way. Luxury Travel Advisor particularly likes the Viking oceangoing ships for their serene Wintergarden, an elegant space under a canopy of Scandinavian trellised wood. It’s perfect for relaxing with a good book or indulging in afternoon tea service.

In keeping with Viking’s Nordic heritage, LivNordic Spa on board is designed with the holistic wellness philosophy of Scandinavia in mind—from the centuries-old tradition of the sauna to a snow grotto where snowflakes gently descend from the ceiling through chilled air. Pool-wise, in addition to the Main Pool with its retractable roof (permitting any-season swimming) the ship will offer Viking’s glass-backed Infinity Pool cantilevered off the stern, allowing guests to swim and take in sea or destination views.

Now under construction by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, Oceania Cruises’ new 1,200-passenger Vista will begin cruising with guests aboard in 2023. In addition to fielding such signature spaces as the Grand Staircase, Grand Dining Room and Grand Lounge, this upscale ship will offer relaxation and water play areas too. Its Pool Deck is expected to be a tranquil oasis for luxury guests, as they can opt to relax in a modern, beach club cabana.

When it’s time for a relaxing spa treatment, the new Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center will offer tranquil treatment areas. This area also includes work-out and personal training spaces, a salon and barbershop. Plus, a spa terrace will offer sweeping sea views.

Azamara’s four boutique ships including the 702-passenger Azamara Pursuit setting sail in 2022 all offer a full-service Sanctum Spa. Cruisers can book an oceanfront massage, get a quick manicure before hitting the town to explore, enhance their “look” with teeth whitening or barber services, or even book an acupuncture treatment.

This spa also offers state-of-the-art skincare services and restorative facials for both men and women. As for massages, cruisers have their pick of hot stone therapy, deep tissue massage, Swedish massage and other exotic massage treatments from around the world. We’d suggest trying the “Elemis Aroma Seaweed Massage,” or for body sculpting, a lime-and-ginger salt glow.

At the Sanctum Terrace, a private spa deck, guests also can sit in a bubbling saltwater bath with powerful water jets that massage the body — and at the same time, soak in the great views. Beyond the spa, Azamara offer complimentary onboard fitness and nutrition classes. Optional one-on-one personal training is available.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s 298-passenger Evrima, begins sailing in May 2022 and is expected to be an enclave of floating luxury, much like a private yachting experience with added perks. For example, within the ship’s Ritz-Carlton Spa, guests can enjoy a rejuvenating spa treatment with ESPA products in one of five private, ocean-view treatment rooms. In addition, the vessel has a full-service beauty lounge, gentleman’s grooming salon, sauna and steam room. Quiet zones will allow guests to disconnect from the world and connect with themselves.

Concluding a $250 million “Star Plus Initiative” renovation project, Windstar Cruises has taken delivery of its third all-suite Star Plus Class ship, Star Pride, the last of three sister vessels that have emerged “stretched” and transformed. Each ship’s capacity was increased to 312 passengers, 50 new suites were added; and all accommodations have new bathrooms. Star Pride will remain in Italy until it resumes sailing in the Mediterranean in April 2022.

The updated Star Pride offers more of what Windstar’s repeat guests told the line they desired. For example, guests can dine at two new venues — Star Grill by Steven Raichlen and a new specialty restaurant, Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso. Best of all, for spa fans, the ship now has an expanded and redesigned World Spa by Windstar.

We’d suggest for a glacial mud body wrap or perhaps a basalt stone massage. Those who want to work out in the gym can use new and improved Technogym equipment. Another plus is that Star Pride has a newly expanded sundeck with a new pool and whirlpool.

The first new ship in 20 years for upscale Sea Cloud Cruises, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, is now sailing. Combining five-star comfort, the feel of a private yacht and traditional seamanship, this three-masted, fully rigged sailing vessel (also motorized) is a modern interpretation of the line’s 90-year-old Sea Cloud flagship. The vessel’s spa has two treatment rooms, a steam bath, Finnish sauna, hairdressing salon and a large outdoor area, and there’s also a fitness center.

SeaDream Yacht Club offers a luxury, Thai-certified SeaDream Spa and Salon on its two yachting vessels, SeaDream I and SeaDream II. Thai-certified therapists provide such spa favorites as Sisley Paris treatments, radiant facials, detoxifying treatments, a soothing aroma massage and “Traditional Thai Massage” for men, women, and couples. Hair and nail services are also offered, and some spa treatments can be arranged in the ship’s open-air private massage area, if weather permits.

Expedition Ships

In September, Ponant launched its first high polar exploration vessel, the 245-passenger Le Commandant Charcot, notable as it’s the cruise industry’s first luxury hybrid electric polar ship; that means it can cut through a greater thickness of ice and can reach rarely visited places like Peter I Island, 300 miles off the Antarctica coast. The 123-cabin Polar Class PC2 ship also will operate on a mix of eco-friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG) and electric battery power.

The ship’s 4,600-square-foot Wellness Lounge called Nuan, located on Deck 9, is home to the Spa Biologique Recherche with three massage and beauty cubicles (including one double cubicle with a sea view), a nail salon and two lounges with sea views where guests can wait or relax after a session.

Other spaces include a hair salon, sauna, a snow room, plus the gym, which has a sea view where guests can wait or relax after a treatment. In addition, there’s a heated indoor swimming pool with a glass roof and counter-current swimming; a sunroom with large external-facing windows; and a Detox bar with sofas and armchairs.

New to the cruise industry is luxe-adventure Atlas Ocean Voyages. The first of five planned expedition ships, the 196-passenger World Navigator launched this year; it’s sailing in Antarctica this winter season. The ship’s 947-square-foot SeaSpa by L’Occitane offers two treatment rooms, a Serenity Room (capacity for eight) and an infrared sauna.

Luxury travelers can opt for 25 minutes of “Shea Ultra-Softening Hand Care,” or go full-in for a 60-minute or 90-minute “Deep Tissue Intense Relief” body massage. Four kinds of face care treatments are available, as is a 25-minute “Aromachologie Foot Relief” treatment, a 20-minute “Mind Relaxing Massage,” and much more.

During 2019, just before the pandemic began, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises launched Hanseatic Inspiration, designated as the line’s bilingual expedition ship with both English and German as official languages. On Deck 8, the 2,530-square-foot Ocean Spa offers treatment rooms with a nature-focused design; a Finnish sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows and an outdoor area; plus, a steam sauna, hydrotherapy shower and ice fountain.

In addition, guests can also enjoy massage and cosmetic treatments in light-filled rooms with a sea view. The focus of the entire ship is “Inspired by Nature,” so sustainable products by Vinoble, Hyapur, John Masters Organics and Nailberry are exclusively used in spa treatments. Hanseatic Inspiration also has a spacious fitness area adjacent to the spa with its own floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows and its own outdoor area too.

Many other classic, boutique and expedition ships also offer luxurious spa experiences including Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and the “new luxury” Celebrity Cruises. For example, Celebrity offers a Spa with 120 treatments, a SEA Thermal Suite with eight distinct spaces for guests to navigate a path to wellness, plus F45 fitness classes and Peloton cycling.
