January 31, 2022 – Four Seasons new hotels: Four Seasons is building on the momentum of its successful 2021 openings in strategic markets, including in Napa Valley, California; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Taormina, Italy.

The company continues to accelerate expansion plans worldwide with four openings planned for 2022, including exciting new developments in Tamarindo, Mexico; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Nashville, Tennessee; and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Along with the accelerated pace of new openings, the high valuations and increasing demand for existing Four Seasons properties managed on behalf of owners speaks to the strength of the Four Seasons brand.

Four Seasons new hotels:

Four Seasons has more than 50 new projects under planning or development, including in Italy, Spain, China, Japan, Colombia, Belize and across key markets in the US, all of which will add to the company’s existing portfolio of 122 hotels and resorts and 48 residential properties in 47 countries around the world.

“Four Seasons has a strong, strategic growth trajectory – an extensive pipeline of projects that will open in key global destinations, with visionary development partners who share our commitment to excellence,” says Bart Carnahan, President, Global Business Development and Portfolio Management, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

“Our residential business in particular is a key pillar in our growth plans, with a five-year pipeline of USD 7 billion in gross sales value comprising more than 30 projects worldwide.”

Carnahan continues: “Our continued growth in residential, and the Four Seasons new hotels, a space in which we’ve been a leader since 1985, speaks to our deep understanding of the luxury consumer – those who want to live and experience the Four Seasons lifestyle. With our development partners, we continue to capitalise on the right opportunities in markets that are relevant to luxury consumers, elevating our residential offering and ensuring that Four Seasons is the address of choice in every location where we operate.”

New standalone Private Residences, developments not connected to a hotel or resort, set to open in the coming years include Four Seasons Private Residences Dubai at Jumeirah – a project that fully sold out before public sales began – Four Seasons Private Residences Lake Austin and Four Seasons Private Residences Marrakech at M Avenue.

These new standalone developments join the company’s current collection in London, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Other upcoming residential developments connected to an existing or soon-to-open Four Seasons property include Fort Lauderdale, Minneapolis, Nashville, Mumbai, Cartagena and Belize.

Four Seasons new hotels

As Four Seasons extends its portfolio globally, the company does so with consideration for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) priorities. Four Seasons is committed to sustainable hospitality, including reducing carbon emissions, conserving water, eliminating waste, and sourcing responsibly.

To further its commitments to address waste and protect local ecosystems, the company aims to remove all single-use plastic from the guest experience by the end of 2022. Four Seasons has a long history of employee care, community support and philanthropy. Central to Four Seasons employee experience and social impact programming is the company’s commitment to supporting cancer research, and the advancement of diversity, inclusion, equality and belonging at Four Seasons corporate offices and properties worldwide.

January 28, 2022 – Wizz Air will launch four new routes to its London Gatwick base from Burgas, Varna, Venice and Palermo this spring.

Wizz Air further develops position at Gatwick

At the same time, the carrier has increased frequencies on the recently announced new routes to Larnaca, Milan and Vienna.

The announcement follows the acquisition of 15 daily slot pairs at Gatwick and the launch of 14 new routes from spring onwards.

This further expansion means that Wizz Air will be operating a total of 25 routes for the summer season.

The expansion at the airport, combined with the decision to adjust the airport slots usage ratio to 70:30 for the summer 2022 season, reinforces Wizz’s intention to fully utilise these slots at maximum capacity and demonstrates the airlines’ long-term commitment to the airport and surrounding region.

From June 13th, the carrier will launch five flights a week to the seaside resort of Varna in Bulgaria, and from June 15th, will fly four times a week to Burgas, a large port city on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.

Not only is Wizz Air launching an additional four new routes, the airline is also increasing the frequency of its flights to Larnaca, Milan and Vienna from daily to twice daily on most days.

From the end of March, all of Wizz Air’s flights from Italy to London will be operating into London Gatwick, providing excellent, low-fare connectivity for passengers between the two countries.

Marion Geoffroy, managing director of Wizz Air UK, said: “Today marks another important step in our continued expansion at Gatwick, following the announcement of our acquisition of new slots at the airport.

“We have continued to call for the full reinstatement of the original 80:20 slot usage rules and welcome the government’s recent decision to adjust the ratio to 70:30, so we can continue to take up new market opportunities and provide even more low-fare opportunities for our customers, supporting the recovery of the aviation sector, associated industries, and local economies.”

January 28, 2022, Officials in Morocco have confirmed a ban on international flights will be lifted on February 7th.

Morocco to reopen borders next week

The decision follows “the evolution of the epidemiological situation in the kingdom,” a statement said, adding that entry requirements for visitors would be announced at a later date.

All flights into the country were initially halted in late November as the first reports of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 spread around the world.

Flights from the UK had been suspended in October.

An official statement added: “This decision comes in accordance with the legal provisions relating to the management of the state of health emergency and following the recommendations of the scientific and technical commission and taking into consideration the evolution of the epidemiological situation in the kingdom.”

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Morocco said: “When flights resume you will need to provide proof that you have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, with the second dose administered at least two weeks prior to travel, and a negative PCR test result before boarding your flight or ferry to Morocco.

“The result must show that the PCR test itself was undertaken no more than 48 hours before boarding.

“For travel by ferry, you will also need to take a Covid-19 test during the journey.

“Children under the age of six years old are exempt from the PCR testing requirement for entry into Morocco.”

Radisson Collection lands in Germany

A milestone opening for Radisson

Radisson Hotel Group has kicked off 2022 with the launch of Germany’s inaugural Radisson Collection-branded hotel – Radisson Collection Hotel, Berlin.

This debut follows an extensive 12-month renovation involving the redesign of all guestrooms and a new look for its lobby, bar and restaurant spaces. The property’s famous Aquadom, which is the largest freestanding cylindrical aquarium in the world with 1,600 tropical fish, has also been enhanced but remains the centrepiece of the lobby.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport is easily accessible from the hotel, either by train or taxi.

“After an extensive creative design process and all the hard work that was put into creating our German flagship hotel, we are excited to launch Radisson Collection Hotel, Berlin,” said Oliver Staas, general manager of the hotel. “The hotel’s unparalleled location on the river right in the centre of Berlin-Mitte, the new interior design with its close attention to detail and our signature Radisson Collection service level will make this hotel a fixture in the five-star hotel market in Berlin.”

Suitable for business and leisure

In total, the hotel houses 427 guestrooms and suites across six floors. Each room is decorated in wooden, grey and plum tones, with decorative accessories and artwork featured throughout. The bathrooms pair the same dark wood tones with white marble.

Several rooms come with private balconies overlooking the Spree and the city itself, including the 101 sq m sixth-floor Nikolai Suite, which boasts a living room, dining room with kitchenette and bathroom with whirlpool tub.

The hotel’s Atrium Bar then provides a place for guests to meet beneath the AquaDom, with coffee and cake served by day along with expertly crafted cocktails, some highlighting locally produced spirits, and small dishes showcasing ingredients by local suppliers.

Adding to this dining experience, Balaustine Restaurant will open as the hotel’s main dining venue in March 2022. Diners can expect to enjoy the flavours of the Levant, alongside cocktails inspired by the Middle East, in a space also encompassing an appealing terrace.

Additional amenities include Heaven Spa with its Finnish sauna, training equipment and indoor pool.

Last but not least, events are hosted in 2,750 sq m of meeting space spanning 15 multifunctional rooms across three floors, with the DomLounge located beneath a glass roof providing panoramic views. Altogether, the event space’s foyer and meeting rooms can accommodate up to 550 delegates.

Air France’s ‘Ready to Fly’ service rolling out to Canadian routes

January 27, 2022 – Air France’s rollout of its ‘Ready To Fly’ service is now available on Air France flights to Paris from Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and starting May 17, Air France’s new flights from Québec City.

Air France’s ‘Ready to Fly’ service rolling out to Canadian routes

With ‘Ready To Fly’, Air France passengers can have their travel documents checked prior to their flight.

The service is now available on 140 routes and 600 daily Air France flights.

Air France launched Ready To Fly in July 2021 as a free and optional service providing customers confirmation that they have the required health documents for their trip before arriving at the airport.

Passengers gain greater peace of mind and a more seamless travel experience, by avoiding multiple checks on the day of departure, says the airline.

Ready To Fly is being progressively deployed throughout the Air France network. It is currently available on more than 140 routes on departure from 80 airports, representing more than 600 daily flights including …

  • Flights to France on departure from Europe and Canada
  • All domestic flights in France and to/from Corsica and French Overseas Department
  • Flights to/from the United States, Argentina, Chile and Brazil
  • Flights from France to Germany, Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Gabon and Senegal

Air France’s Ready to Fly service also automates the French vaccine pass verification on domestic flights. The vaccine pass became mandatory on domestic flights in France for passengers aged 16 and over as of Jan. 24, 2022.

To reduce the time required to process the submitted documents, Air France is replacing the manual verification of the vaccine pass with an automated check, ensuring customers travelling in France receive instant confirmation.

The airline says this feature is available a few days before departure, in the same way as with any other Ready To Fly document verification process – customers receive an email from Air France inviting them to upload their vaccine pass on a secure online platform.

Customers who have not used the pre-validation service can alternatively scan the QR code of their vaccine pass during check-in at a self-service kiosk at the airport on the day of departure. This service is currently available at Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Paris-Orly, Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Mulhouse, Nantes, Nice, Strasbourg and Toulouse. This feature will be integrated in the online check-in process in the coming months.

January 27, 2021 – The Homm brand is up and running with the arrival of the beachfront Homm Bliss Southbeach Patong.

Banyan Tree launches Homm brand with Phuket property

A new Banyan Tree concept

Homm – a new Banyan Tree Group concept providing guests with a sense of home through reliable services, signature facilities and well-designed accommodation at affordable rates – has made its debut. It’s one of five new brands encompassed within Banyan Tree Group’s growing portfolio, alongside Garrya, Folio, Banyan Tree Escape and Banyan Tree Veya.

The Homm flag aims to cater for families, couples and business customers alike, incorporating destination-specific immersive experiences that engage travellers with the local culture of key second-tier cities.

“With the introduction of our Homm brand, we strive to provide guests with true ‘sense of home’ comforts that act as a basecamp for new experiences and adventures, while simultaneously supporting the local community,” said Chatchaya Jearranai (May), hotel manager of Homm Bliss Southbeach Patong. “Homm Bliss Southbeach Patong’s close proximity to Phuket’s culturally rich attractions and coastal region provides global travellers with the ability to fully engage with locals and foster sustainability and stewardship practices through Banyan Tree Group’s world-renowned Stay for Good programme, a blueprint for future Homm locations to come.”

Launching in Patong

The first hotel in this collection, Homm Bliss Southbeach Patong, accommodates guests in 71 contemporary rooms. Pairing the essence of its setting in Phuket with the hospitality group’s signature service standards, the hotel lies at the southern end of Patong Bay on 1.5 miles of white-sand shoreline with views over the Andaman Sea.

Newly refurbished guestrooms come with contemporary beach-inspired design, and 39 of the 71 rooms also feature sea-facing private balconies or terraces with plunge pools.

The property provides beachfront access and is home to two outdoor pools, the Seagulls on Southbeach dining venue for quick bites, and all-day restaurant Rice Bowl for authentic Thai cuisine.

Each Homm property will advocate for an endangered species through Banyan Tree Group’s Stay for Good programme. The Patong hotel, for example, prominently displays an origami version of the native black-billed gull in its lobby.

WTTC predicts a strong recovery of the European Travel and Tourism sector in 2022

January 27, 2021 – WTTC predicts a strong recovery of the European Travel and Tourism sector in 2022.

Sector sees a surge of more than 250% in European bookings for Easter compared to 2021

WTTC predicts a strong recovery of the European Travel and Tourism sector in 2022.

WTTC calls to remove all restrictions for fully jabbed travellers and allow free movement

London, UK: The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which represents the global private Travel & Tourism sector, has revealed bookings for intra-European travel over the Easter period have increased by more than 250%, while summer bookings are currently 80% above 2021 levels.

According to WTTC’s knowledge partner ForwardKeys, the leading travel data and analytics company, intra-European flight bookings for the busy Easter and summer periods have surged ahead of last year, giving a welcome boost to Travel & Tourism businesses across the continent.

During WTTC’s participation at FITUR, the international tourism fair taking place in Madrid this week, the global tourism body gave hope to the struggling sector.

Forward Keys booking data revealed a strong recovery for intra-European travel for Easter and summer, set to increase by more than 250% and 80% compared to 2021, respectively.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Latest booking data shows Europeans are positive about travelling again. Bookings for Easter and summer are looking strong. Omicron has affected the start of the year, but as infections peak and the symptoms remain mild people are booking again.

“The problems occur when governments react with travel restrictions. The World Health Organisation says that closing borders is pointless when Omicron is already prevalent in society. All it does is damage the economy and livelihoods. ‘

“According to latest scientific evidence, although more transmissible, Omicron is less severe and leads to less hospitalisations and deaths. Therefore, we are calling on governments to reduce all travel restrictions and allow fully vaccinated travellers to move freely.

“Spain, that is hosting FITUR, a major Travel & Tourism trade fair, is keeping its borders open and is backing free movement and the economy.”

According to the booking data, intra-European travel during Easter and summer in 2022 is expected to perform below pre-pandemic levels by only 38% and 45% respectively.

However, as countries across the continent continue to relax travel restrictions, early indications show the recovery is gaining momentum and could edge even closer to 2019 levels as we head towards the summer.

In addition, during the first quarter of 2022, intra-European travel has witnessed a 275% surge in bookings, while latest booking data shows that international arrivals to European destinations will see an over 280% increase, compared to the same period in 2021.

Spain is poised to be the most popular destination for European travellers, with intra-European arrivals to Spain during the first quarter of 2022 currently up by 320% (YOY), followed by Turkey.

As travel restrictions continue to ease and consumer confidence continues to grow, the European Travel & Tourism sector should expect an increased demand for travel with a significant boost in bookings in the upcoming months.

In 2019, the global Travel & Tourism sector contributed nearly USD 9.2 trillion to the economy and represented 10.6% of all jobs (334 million).

According to WTTC’s research, in 2020, when the pandemic brought international travel to an almost standstill, 62 million jobs were lost, and the sector’s contribution to the global GDP fell by a staggering US$ 4.5 trillion.

These losses have affected the many millions of livelihoods who rely upon a thriving Travel & Tourism sector, while significantly affecting the global economy and development.

Iceland New Lagoon

Iceland New Lagoon

January 25, 2021 –The Blue Lagoon’s got competition.

Iceland Is Opening a New Lagoon Next Month — With Stunning Forest Views and 2 Swim-up Bars

In 2014, as Icelandic crews were digging the 4.6-mile Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel between Akureyri and Húsavík in northern Iceland, they hit a previously undiscovered geothermal hot water source. At the time, it was an unwelcome surprise, hindering the construction project — but innovation quickly sprung from the situation. Now, it’s the lifeblood of a new luxury spa.

Set to open in late February or early March, the Forest Lagoon, also called Skógarböð Geothermal Spa, will allow visitors to soak in large leisure pools filled with the natural hot waters from the Vaðlaheiði mountain above. As they soak, guests will take in the stunning atmosphere of the Vaðlaskógur forest’s birch and pine trees, along with views of the Eyja Fjord and city of Akureyri. Best of all, this area of Iceland is (remarkably) known for a fairly temperate climate.

The spa features one pool that’s about 5,700 square feet, plus another that’s 570 square feet with warmer water, as well as a cold pool, two in-water bars, a sauna, a quiet room, and locker space for 200 visitors. There will also be an accessible changing area and charging stations for electric cars and bikes, as well as an on-site restaurant — which will serve local beer and wine — with a fireside dining area that’s cloaked in natural wood to channel the spirit of the surrounding forest.

Tickets are now available for the new upscale experience, with prices starting at 5,800 Icelandic króna (about $45) for one guest. A package for two guests along with two drinks is also available for 13,900 Icelandic króna (about $108), as are gift certificate packages for five visits for 25,000 Icelandic króna (about $194) or 10 visits for 45,000 Icelandic króna (about $350).

By mixing forest bathing with natural hot spring baths, the attraction is sure to bring more visitors to the northern side of the island nation. The spa is being built by Basalt Architects, the same team behind Blue Lagoon near the Reykjavik airport, as well as Geosea Geothermal Sea Baths, Húsavík, about an hour’s drive from Akureyri.

Only QR-code needed to travel in EU – starting February 1st (recommendation by EU)

Only QR-code needed to travel in EU

January 25, 2022-  As of February 1st, 2022 fully vaccinated travelers with a QR code do no longer have to take tests or a mandatory quarantine. This is the recommendation by the EU.

Only QR-code needed to travel in EU

This recommendation is made as omicron seems to spread far and wide and vaccinations have increased all over Europe.

Some countries might still have their own rules to which they stick. Every European country can make their own decision if they are going to follow this recommendation.

The hope is very much focused on a uniform rule for traveling.

Carnival Brazil

Brazil Delays Carnival Celebrations Until April

Brazil Carnival

January 25, 2022,Rio de Janeiro has decided to delay its carnival celebrations until April as the omicron variant spreads rapidly through Brazil, Reuters reported.

Brazil Delays Carnival Celebrations Until April

“The decision was made respecting for the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil and the need, at this time, to preserve lives and join forces to drive vaccination throughout the country,” read a statement signed jointly by the cities of Rio and São Paulo to The Associated Press.

As of now, the celebrations are slated to begin on April 21, 2022. Carnival is usually celebrated throughout February and into early March.

When Rio’s famed Carnival samba parade at Marques de Sapucai Sambadrome returns, the legendary street celebrations that typically surround are still unsure what their carnival will look like, according to mayors of the major Brazilian cities.

The AP reported that the Mayor Rio’s Mayor Eduardo Paes, and São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes have come to a joint decision that street parties will not look like they have in years past, but the two have yet to clarify what guidelines the parties and celebrations will follow.

“The street carnival, by its very nature, due to the democratic aspect it has, makes it impossible to exercise any kind of inspection,” Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes said, Reuters reported.

Rio’s Carnival typically includes a formal samba parade as well as a collection of street parties, all marked by festive, feathered, and absolutely wild costumes. The city’s official samba parade features performances from the country’s top samba schools, which devote months preparing to compete with one another.

Still, this year’s Carnival celebration in Rio is a step above last year when the city was forced to cancel the entire event. Brazilians have danced through wars, repressive military rule, even the flu pandemic of 1918 and 1919, The New York Times notes.

While Carnival is celebrated around the world in places including Venice, Trinidad and Tobago, and New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro is home to one of the world’s most famous parties. Rio’s Carnival celebration is among the largest in the world and traces its history to the early 1700s.

England Arrivals

Covid-19 tests scrapped for England arrivals

England Arrivals

January 25, 2022, Travellers touching down in England will no longer have to take Covid-19 tests if they are fully vaccinated against the virus, the government has confirmed.

Covid-19 tests scrapped for England arrivals

The changes will be introduced from 04:00 on February 11th.

The travel sector welcomed the move as a welcome boost ahead of the half-term holiday next month.

Rules have also been eased for unvaccinated travellers, who will no longer have to take a day eight test.

However, they will still need pre-departure and day two tests.

Everyone arriving in England, regardless of vaccination status, will still need to fill in a passenger locator form – although these would be made “simpler and easier” to complete, transport secretary Grant Shapps said this afternoon.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have previously followed the lead of England, but any changes are for them to decide.

Commenting on the changes, prime minister Boris Johnson said although people had to be “cautious,” “you can see the figures are starting to get better”.

The move will be welcomed by the travel and tourism industry, one of the sectors most badly affected by coronavirus lockdown measures.

Julia Simpson, World Travel & Tourism Council chief executive, said: “WTTC welcomes the government’s decision to scrap testing for those who are fully vaccinated travelling to England.

“There is no longer any need for testing, and we urge ministers across the UK and countries around the world to follow England’s lead and allow the fully vaccinated to travel freely.

“After a gruelling 18 months for the UK tourism sector, this will provide a massive boost to businesses up and down the country.”

The WTTC, however, called for the “unnecessary” passenger locator forms to also be scrapped.

Charlie Cornish, group chief executive of MAG, echoed the positive sentiments.

He added: “This important announcement is excellent news for our sector’s recovery.

“This change will be welcomed by the millions of vaccinated people who are desperate to travel and will now be able to do so – restriction-free – for the first time in more than a year.

“The latest research shows travel restrictions do very little to stop the spread of variants like Omicron.

“Removing them will ensure the many cultural, social and economic benefits of international travel can be realised without any major impact on public health.”

Joss Croft, chief executive of UKinbound, said the news would bring relief.

“The removal of testing for vaccinated international arrivals shows that England is truly open for business and for the first time in almost two years, inbound tourism businesses can start trading their way to recovery.

“Additionally, we hope to see the aligning of international restrictions across all four nations in the coming days.

“International visitors often visit more than one country when here in the UK, which is why a four nations approach to re-opening is very important.”
