Mexico:

Marriott’s first-ever Delta Hotels by Marriott all-inclusive resort has opened its doors in Mexico.

The new Delta Hotels is set on a hillside in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle in the Rivera Nayarit.

It’s the first ever Delta Hotels property in Mexico and the first Delta Hotels All-Inclusive Resort, part of the global expansion for the brand since being acquired by Marriott back in 2015.

“This is an exciting moment for our brand as we welcome the first all-inclusive resort and our first property in Mexico,” said Jennifer Connell, Vice President and Global Brand Leader, Delta Hotels by Marriott. “Delta Hotels All-Inclusive Resorts empower a seamless travel experience that helps guests focus on what’s important, championing the key essentials for the highest impact. Through amazing food and beverage experiences, activated pools, and maximum fun, guests are free to do and play more and simply concentrate on enjoying time with the people they care about.”

The resort has a total of 117 rooms, with private balconies and mountain views.

That’s along with two restaurants, four pop-up venues, a pair of pools, a 24-hour fitness centre and a 10-treatment-room spa.

The property also has a beach club with shuttle service, and a Delta Pantry with on-the-go breakfast, along with “healthy premium snacks and beverages.”

“We look forward to welcoming guests to the first Delta Hotel in Riviera Nayarit and are excited to elevate the all-inclusive offering in the destination,” said Lita Aguirre, general manager of the hotel. “Our guests can expect comfortable rooms with balconies for astonishing views of the lush vegetation, engaging activities for all, and cuisine that places an emphasis on simple, fresh ingredients.”

Las Vegas:

The Venetian Resort has announced several new updates to the property’s 2.25 million-square-foot convention centre and expo, including a change of name for two of its meetings-focused venues.

Beginning September 2, the Sands Expo & Convention Centre will be known as The Venetian Expo and The Venetian Congress Centre will be referred to as The Venetian Convention Centre. According to the company, the new name for the expo space aligns with The Venetian brand while the name change for The Venetian Congress Centre is designed to better reflect the function of the space.

This year, The Venetian Expo will host several of the Top 25 trade shows in the United States, including ISC WestHIMSS Global Health Conference & ExhibitionJCK Las Vegas, and American Urological Association.

In addition, the resort has begun booking its newest meeting room, The Stella Studio. A multi-functional venue with more than 8,000 square feet of space, the studio offers a private meeting or event space, with natural light, and is customizable to meet the needs of small to midsize groups. The studio’s dedicated kitchen and full bar make the space well-suited for receptions, coffee and continental breakfast.

The Venetian Resort has also launched its Venetian Meetings Virtual Planner, a tool aimed at MICE professionals that allows prospective customers to customize and research venues prior to contacting a representative at the resort. The tool also allows a prospect to request a proposal from the sales team on property. In addition to providing the dimensions and capacities for each venue, Venetian Meetings Virtual Planner takes users through a virtual tour of the venues and provides fly-through videos and photos. Once a user has determined their event space, they are able to design a configuration to suit their needs, in two and three dimensions, and attach the customized layout to the RFP.

The Carlton Tower Jumeirah Opens Following Complete Renovation

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

London:

The Carlton Tower Jumeirah has opened in the heart of London’s fashionable Knightsbridge district following a $137 million, 18-month renovation, which refreshed the rooms and added new dining choices, spa and lobby entrance.

Previously known as Jumeirah Carlton Tower, The Carlton Tower Jumeirah has launched under a new name to reflect the significance of the most extensive transformation in its history.

Originally designed 60 years ago by Henry End, also responsible for the interiors of New York’s Plaza Hotel, the five-star property was redesigned by 1508 London. While respecting the building’s original, clean modernist style, the design studio layered an eclectic mix inspired by the architecture of surrounding mansion blocks and homes with soft curved edges, pops of bright colour and organic inspired forms throughout.

Among the changes, there is a new foyer and reception, health club and spa with London’s “largest naturally lit swimming pool,” flagship restaurant, lobby bar and lounge, ballroom and meeting rooms.

The number of rooms has been reduced from 216 to 186 to allow more space and natural light. Of these, 87 rooms have balconies offering views of the city. The new Royal Suite is the hotel’s most exclusive residence with three bedrooms and comes with an option to privatize the entire floor.

The destination restaurant Al Mare, meaning “at the sea” in Italian, offers a sophisticated yet informal dining experience for guests. Head Chef Marco Calenzo, who has previously worked in Michelin stars from Tokyo to Hawaii, draws from his Italian heritage to design the menu of light and modern Italian fare complemented by a wine list and artisanal cocktails. Accessed from the lobby is The Chinoiserie, an all-day dining area that won the “Afternoon Tea of the Year” award in 2018. The hotel has also partnered with Annabel Karmel, an award-winning children’s cookery and nutrition expert based in the U.K., to design children’s menus at both restaurants.

The Peak Fitness Club & Spa, covering three floors of the hotel, has been completely redesigned with new treatment rooms at the Talise Spa and a revitalized swimming pool with new cabanas and thermal areas. The gym overlooks the city and offers studio classes and latest exercise equipment. In addition, the hotel sits on Cadogen Gardens, which offers a lush and private green space for additional wellness recreation such as yoga and tennis.

The hotel’s ballroom on the first-floor seats up to 400 people and can be entered by private entrance or via a grand staircase with a cascading chandelier. In addition, there are three contemporary meeting rooms, filled with natural light and overlooking the gardens.

Centrally located, the Jumeirah Carlton Tower hotel is steps away from luxury shopping at Harrods and Sloane Street, cultural institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum, and several local restaurants. Flights are offered daily from major U.S. cities on Delta, United, American and British Airways airlines into Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, London Luton and London Stansted airports, all within an appropriate distance to the hotel.  Guests flying in can also enjoy chauffeur services and airport transfers.

The 5 Most Exciting London Hotel Openings in 2021

When London reopens to the world, these new hotels—stylish townhouses, global brands, and a refreshed grande dame—will be waiting.

While the United Kingdom remains off limits for many visitors around the world, a slate of exciting new London hotels have made their debut in the capital, with more to come. Here are a few to bookmark for when borders reopen.

All hotels are open as of May 20, 2021, when hospitality lockdown restrictions lifted.

The Mayfair Townhouse
What to Expect: A stylish new social hub in London
Neighborhood: Mayfair

In London’s Mayfair, Half Moon Street was Oscar Wilde’s social stomping ground. He belonged to a nearby men’s club and set his play The Importance of Being Earnest on the townhouse-lined street. Today, the new 172-room Mayfair Townhouse there has a whimsical and smart vibe—the owners describe it as “Oscar Wilde meets Alice in Wonderland.”

Set across 15 townhouses—7 of which are Grade II listed, with particular architectural significance—the property has shed anything corporate from its former life as a Hilton.

The first thing you see when you walk in is Alfie, the hotel’s sparkly peacock sculpture, encrusted with 26,000 Swarovski crystals. It’s a first feel of the hotel’s celebration of the “dandy lifestyle,” a term that historically meant the pursuit of the finer things in life—and there is a lot of pleasure here, including the brilliant Dandy Bar, where the signature cocktails have names like the Casanova, the Earl of Mayfair, Chic, and Madame Fox.

A mischievous and chic fox is the hotel’s mascot, adorning every room door. And the artwork throughout is the opposite of musty townhouse—contemporary fine art portraits of the fictional Renard (“fox” in French) family by Miss Aniela feel amusing and peculiar, a mash-up of the 19th and 21st centuries.

Some of the rooms, peaceful and deep-hued in blue, green, and gold, have gardens and balconies. Late night cravings can be satisfied with British snacks from the free minibar offerings, like Mr. Filbert’s olives and cheese and onion potato chips from the British Crisp Co. If you’re solo, don’t discount the wonderful entry-level cabin rooms—they’re one of the best small-room offerings in the luxury London market.

The Mayfair Townhouse is a part of Iconic Luxury Hotels, which includes country hotels Chewton Glen in Hampshire and Cliveden in Berkshire. You get just a hint of country life with the Noble Isle bath amenities, which, to me, smell like a sweet British summer day.

Henry’s Townhouse
What to Expect: An exclusive-use property with top design and Jane Austen vibes
Neighborhood: Marylebone

Henry’s Townhouse is the other splashy townhouse opening this year, but it’s just one Grade II-listed house in Marylebone—and its seven bedrooms are exclusive-use only. For a family reunion, wedding party, or holiday gathering, this is a great new option in London’s hospitality scene.

Who is Henry? He was Jane Austen’s brother, and he lived in this house for about five years. (Jane did visit him here.) He managed her estate after she died. Today, the narrow townhouse has one staircase going up five floors, a cozy front lounge, a state-of-the-art kitchen and dining room for breakfast, and a “snug,” a slim space to read or enjoy late-night conversation. While the kitchen is perfect for cappuccinos and eggs, it also works equally well for a corporate retreat with big-screen tech.

Each room is Georgian in style and named for a member of Jane Austen’s family—pink-themed Eliza is the most romantic room with a dramatic four-poster bed, while my favourite was James—I loved the chartreuse couch, and it feels slightly more modern.

You can easily become absorbed in the artwork and books, from Jane Austen first editions costing thousands of pounds housed in a glass bookcase, to an antique painting that owner Steven Collins told me he “found for 20 quid” at a market in Nice. Collins and his wife, Jane, an interiors and antiques expert, designed the townhouse with Russell Sage Studio, incorporating their personal art collection and taste.

The secret weapon of the house is Ann, the townhouse manager who lives in an adjacent apartment. Warm, lovely, and efficient, you will wish she ran your entire life, not just your time at Henry’s Townhouse. It feels like a hotel of your very own, thanks to her.

NoMad London
What to Expect: An iconic New York City brand arrives in London
Neighborhood: Covent Garden

New Yorkers will feel familiarity at London’s new outpost of the Roman and Williams–designed NoMad, its first outside the United States. To start, the library is filled with New York books on the shelves.

“It is a conversation between New York City and London,” Sydell Group CEO Andrew Zobler told me. But it’s very London, built in a former police station and Magistrates’ Court, right in the middle of Covent Garden and across the street from the Royal Opera House. That location, in the centre of the city’s nightlife, drives the hotel’s offerings.

The Royal Opera Suite, one of the hotel’s 91 rooms, feels fit for an opera star with gold bathtub, rich fabrics, and light streaming in through tall windows.

The NoMad restaurant is set in a soaring atrium filled with greenery and light—it will appear on Instagram feeds everywhere. At New York’s NoMad, the roast chicken has been a famous menu item since it opened in 2012. The London version is a chicken dinner for the whole table, at £70 a person, including starter and dessert.

For a more casual dining option, Side Hustle feels like a pub in style but serves Mexican street food like tacos and tostadas, something sorely missing in London. Coming soon: a late-night cocktail lounge called Common Decency.

Nobu Hotel London Portman Square
What to Expect: The Nobu brand expands in London with a second property
Neighborhood: Marylebone

Last winter, the new Nobu Hotel London Portman Square—the second Nobu hotel in London after Shoreditch—was open for just a few days before lockdown. But after its reopening several weeks ago, I found myself sitting across from Kate Moss at the hotel’s restaurant. While celebrity culture feels very early aughts, it did lend a bit of welcome glam, the feel of a kickstart to the roaring 20s after months of dreary lockdown.

Celebrities aside, the 249-room hotel, anchored by its enormous signature restaurant, feels very much like a Place To Be, an urban watering hole for cool cocktails in the dimly lit Nobu bar or a morning coffee and the paper in the Lobby Lounge, whether you’re staying or not.

You’ll want to book far in advance for a table at the restaurant—Londoners have filled every prime dinner slot to indulge in the signature dishes like yellowtail jalapeño, crispy rice with spicy tuna, and black cod miso.

Throughout the public spaces, the design is Japanese inspired—sleek, neutral, and calm—but with show stopping elements like a 16-foot kinetic sculpture in the high-ceilinged lobby, mesmerizing as it turns. Interiors were designed by David Collins Studio, a firm specializing in hotels like Gleneagles in Scotland, but also lifestyle spaces like Harrod’s dining hall and the Alexander McQueen flagship store in Paris.

The defining feature of the hotel is the Nobu Pilates studio, the first of its kind from the brand. Led by former Equinox instructor Marsha Lindsay, and with three signature classes, Power, Pure, and Precision, the studio—like the restaurant—feels very Los Angeles-in-London and is already a big hit with Marylebone locals. There is also a large gym and juice bar. Here, you’re just a short walk away from the charming Marylebone high street and one of London’s special smaller museums, the Wallace Collection.

The Dilly
What to Expect: A refurbed and renamed grande dame
Neighborhood: Piccadilly

The Dilly, previously under Marriott management, has debuted a refurbished look (with more to come) and new name on London’s Piccadilly, walking distance from Piccadilly Circus, Soho, Chinatown, and the theater district to one side, and on the other, shopping emporium Fortnum & Mason, Hatchards (the oldest bookshop in the U.K.), and the Royal Academy of the Arts.

Although I have passed the property countless times, I never realized what an incredible history it has, first operating as a hotel in 1908, in the era of guests coming over on Cunard ships. While many hotels erase history in favor of modernity, I love the slightly creaky floors and the gilded, original ceilings. There is a dance studio—the only one at a London hotel—where guests can take classes like ballroom, two indoor squash courts, the only outdoor terrace on Piccadilly for breakfast, and a greenhouse restaurant for its Peter Rabbit–themed afternoon tea.

I suggest dressing for cocktails in the Oak Lounge before dinner—a welcome feeling after this past year—before dining on upscale Indian at Madhu’s of Mayfair, doing a six-month pop-up residency for now. Of the 283 rooms, the 12 Dilly suites shine, some with views of Parliament and Big Ben.

There are London touches everywhere—partnerships with brands like flower shop Pullbrook & Gould and local perfumery Floris. Guests can hire a bike for £10 a day and take a picnic basket to Hyde Park or St. James’s Park. This is a great choice for families who want to be in the centre of London—and for dog owners, as it’s very dog friendly. I am hoping that its grand dame status continues to shine with independent ownership.

Poland leads the way in new hotels

Interestingly, Poland is by far the fastest growing national hotel market in Central and Eastern Europe – 64 hotels with 12,679 keys are in the works here. Warsaw will be home to seven of these projects, making the Polish capital the third most dynamic urban market in the region.

Poland hotel bookings

With 51 properties and 11,366 rooms, meanwhile, Russia comes in second place on our national leaderboard. Its largest city Moscow is also second in terms of urban markets, with ten ongoing projects and 1,478 additional rooms.

Not to be overlooked, Croatia comes in right behind Russia with 32 new schemes, albeit with a remarkable 11,699 keys – even more than Poland. This is due to the fact that the country has a few mega-projects on its development slate.

Montenegro takes fourth place in terms of property count (21), which is set to bring 5,330 rooms into play, while Romania is fifth with 18 upcoming launches and 2,897 keys. And Istanbul is the region’s most active urban market, courtesy of its tally of 14 projects and 2,809 rooms.

Central and Eastern Europe’s most impressive hotel projects

Swissôtel Sofia, which will include 281 hotel rooms as well as serviced residences, is definitely shaping up to be one of the region’s standout properties. Once it opens in early 2023, the scheme will offer guests three stylish dining outlets featuring local and international delicacies, state-of-the-art meeting space including a ballroom, and a contemporary executive lounge. The hotel will also include the brand’s signature spa concept, a Pürovel Spa & Sport facility offering invigorating Alpine-inspired treatments, exercise classes and fitness equipment.

Further north, Portum Towers will launch in Bratislava in early 2024. This 490-room hotel will be part of a mixed-use complex consisting of five buildings and expansive green spaces. Guests will have access to a selection of restaurants, café, canteens and boutiques. A gallery, exhibition space, day clinic, spa, and a relaxation and fitness centre will also be part of the larger development.

Set to open by mid-2022, Park of Poland Hotel will offer 240 rooms and bungalows to guests wanting to stay near the eponymous entertainment complex. As well as providing high-quality lounges and restaurants, the hotel will incorporate 3,600 sq m of conference space, plus a 1,150 sq m ballroom.

According to our researchers, Central and Eastern Europe’s hotel market will expand by 283 schemes and 65,581 keys in the coming years. We take a closer look at the key trends – and pick out three properties worth keeping a particularly close eye on.

Hotel openings by year in Central and Eastern Europe

The remainder of 2021 is looking rather busy for the region, with 64 hotels and 12,547 keys due to complete before the year is out. No fewer than 40 of these properties are already in the pre-opening phase.

For 2022, the data shows that another 73 launches with 13,655 rooms are scheduled to go live. However, 2023 will look slightly quieter, with just 34 projects and 7,603 keys on the books at present. For 2024 and beyond, 112 more hotels and 31,776 rooms are currently in the pipeline.

Of these 283 new hotels, 170 will be in the four-star segment, while 113 will fall into the luxury five-star category.

Malta:

Malta enjoys the warmest weather on average in the whole of Europe, making it the perfect place for a last-minute getaway this summer.

Its dramatic history includes being ruled by Romans, Moors, the French and the British, meaning that English is widely spoken and its cities are full of amazing cultural treasures – from ancient temples to the stunning Renaissance buildings in the capital, Valletta.

Not to mention its beautiful beaches, like the stunning Blue Lagoon, which is home to dolphins and sea lions. A trip to Malta combines the best of ancient Europe with the kind of paradise island scenery that you’d normally have to take a long-haul flight to experience. To get you in the mood for a Maltese holiday, we’ve picked out some of the best hotels, from luxurious five-star resorts to atmospheric boutique B&Bs

Ursulino Valletta, Valletta

This modern boutique B&B is right by some of Valletta’s most popular attractions, including the Upper Barrakka Gardens and Manoel Theatre, and features a beautiful roof terrace where you can eat breakfast while gazing out across the dreamy blue sea.

Original artworks from Ursulino Valletta’s private collection hang on the walls, and the gorgeous contemporary suites come with a plush living area and mezzanine sleeping quarters.

Casa Rocca Piccola B&B, Valletta

Fancy staying in a real Renaissance palazzo in the historic centre of Valletta? Then look no further than this romantic B&B inside the ancestral home of the 9th Marquis de Piro and his family.

The five bedrooms at Casa Rocca Piccola B&B are packed with period features, antique curios and beautiful ornate furnishings, plus there’s a gorgeous terraced garden for enjoying breakfast in the fresh air.

Part of the building is also a popular museum, where you can learn about Malta’s history through the lives of the palace’s aristocratic owners.

AX The Palace, Sliema

Located in stylish Sliema, a buzzing, affluent town on Malta’s north-east coast, AX The Palace is kitted out with contemporary rooms, a rooftop spa and infinity pool, as well as a choice of five places to eat and drink.

Dine on east Asian-inspired dishes with views out across Sliema’s harbour in the ninth-floor TemptAsian, or head up to the roof for cocktails and pizza at one of Malta’s coolest night-time venues. Rooms here range from light and modern Comfort Rooms overlooking the hotel atrium, through to Designer Suites, each themed around one of the five senses.

The Phoenicia Malta, Valletta

One of Malta’s grandest and most famous hotels, The Phoenicia was a favourite of the Queen when the British ruled over Malta in the early 20th Century, and has kept plenty of its effortless Art-Deco style.

Set just outside Valletta’s city walls, the luxury Malta hotel boasts an infinity pool overlooking the harbour, a lovely sun terrace and an indoor pool and spa. Elegant marble interiors and wooden ceiling fans keep the hotel cool during the summer months, and the main restaurant serves inventive seasonal dishes, with much of the produce grown on-site in the kitchen garden.

My Travel House, Rabat

Perfectly situated for soaking up the rhythms of village life in sleepy Rabat, now a suburb of Mdina, this beautiful stone townhouse is a great place for exploring Malta’s historic north. Discover Roman villas and ancient catacombs nearby, or head to a nearby café to enjoy the buzz of local life.

My Travel House has simple, comfortable rooms – one with a balcony overlooking Rabat’s ancient pedestrianised streets – as well as a roof terrace where guests can relax over breakfast in the sun.

Cugo Gran Macina Grand Harbour Hotel, Senglea

Perched opposite Valletta the Cugó Gran Macina is one of Malta’s most prestigious hotels.

Its exterior fortress walls give way to an ultra-modern look inside, and the facilities are second to none, with a stylish pool and deck overlooking Valletta’s iconic harbour, and an elegant bar and restaurant where the award-winning kitchen team conjure up sophisticated takes on traditional Maltese cuisine.

Explore the Newest Luxury Hotels in Brazil

The best luxury hotels in Rio de Janeiro, including beach butlers and sigh-worthy infinity pools

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Brazil:

Where once the Copacabana Palace was the first and last word in luxury accommodation in Rio, the arrival of Rogerio Fasano’s first foray in the city right on the Ipanema beachfront (where else?) emphatically raised the bar. The famous Palace still delivers bygone glamour and facilities galore including a spectacular pool, but the Fasano and, more recently, the Emiliano both arrived from São Paulo with added contemporary cool to go with the undeniable luxury. These are the places to see and be seen, with exclusive rooftop pools, famous guests and sumptuous spas, all delivered with discreet but welcoming warmth. Here’s our pick of the best luxury hotels in Rio.

Hotel Fasano Rio de Janeiro

Fasano has single-handedly revolutionised the city’s hotel scene with its superior service and understated cool, making it the place to see and be seen. Elegant to the hilt, the signature dark-wood panelling makes the building as attractive from outside as in. Entry to the guest-only rooftop infinity pool is so sought-after that São Paulo’s high-flyers book rooms on weekends just to facilitate a Saturday afternoon’s lounging across the state border. The impressive suites have drawn the likes of many a celebrity, from Beckham to Beyoncé. Watching the sun set (or indeed rise) over Ipanema beach from your balcony is something magical.

Belmond Copacabana Palace

The dozens of black-and-white photos of Hollywood, rock ‘n’ roll and, indeed, genuine royalty that line the corridors of this gorgeous, neo-classical wedding cake of a hotel hint at the opulence that has been ingrained in it over the years. It very much maintains a classic rather than contemporary style, with vast chandeliers, copious amounts of marble and forests-worth of polished Brazilian wood. Service to the sunloungers on Copacabana Beach includes fresh fruits and coconut water, and the spa is a first-class retreat. Michelin-starred Mee, directed by Ken Hom, completes the picture, as do the stunning black pool and rooftop tennis court.

Hotel Emiliano

If you’re staying at Hotel Emiliano, opt for the sea view and be seduced by the views and sound of crashing of waves. Anyone looking to hit all the classic Rio high notes will find plenty to fawn over here at the southern tip of Copacabana beach. Pop on personalised flip-flops and head to the magnificent rooftop pool that L-shapes in front of the sun-loungers to deliver a stunning tropical refuge. You don’t even have to lift a finger here; friendly and informed staff are eager to please, and the on-call butler, room turn-downs and beach service add to the sense of luxury.

Santa Teresa Hotel RJ MGallery

This converted mansion, once part of a former coffee plantation, is deceptively large, its rustic features preserved and shot through with a dash of contemporary Brazilian style. Palm trees pepper the lush, green gardens and arc over the pool to conjure up a genuine tropical paradise. In keeping with the overall feel of the hotel, all rooms are casually elegant, the muted tones and reclaimed wooden furniture, including rustic four-poster beds in some rooms, creating a cosy feel. The hotel’s Térèze restaurant has collected a raft of awards for its Franco-Brazilian fusions, drawing customers from all over the city.

LSH Hotel
A grown-up hotel in Barra with enough pulling power to tempt visitors away from Ipanema. All rooms have ample balconies, with the lateral as well as front-facing options all getting a fine view of the rolling Atlantic. The glass-bottomed pool a playful reminder that the hotel has been conceived with Miami’s Delano in spirit – complete with Saturday night DJ sets – and exudes the showy Barra lifestyle. Beach service means complimentary towels, parasols, deckchairs and water await whenever you want to venture onto the sand.

Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro
From the strikingly minimal, contemporary lobby to the sandy tones and palm-lined pool, the designers have done their level best to reflect the city’s emblems and distinguish it from cookie-cutter chain hotels. Fantastically high ceilings, open spaces with ‘living’ walls of plants and homages to the great local landscaper Roberto Burle Marx show a genuine effort to interact with the region’s topography and bring the outdoors indoors. The basement spa is pure escapism, mercifully insulated from the joyous weekly samba classes held in the adjacent studio and the pumping limbs of the next-door, high-tech fitness suite.

Carton House, a Fairmont Managed Hotel Opens in Ireland

Travel news from around the world

Ireland:

For more than 250 years, Carton House has been the finest Georgian estate in Ireland. Now, after a two-year, multimillion-euro total renovation of the original house, surrounding hotel and stunning grounds and parkland, it has reopened as part of the Fairmont Hotels portfolio.

Situated in Maynooth, County Kildare, Carton House was once the ancestral home of the Earls of Kildare and the Dukes of Leinster. This walled garden Fairmont estate is surrounded by 1,100 acres of sweeping parkland, ancient woodlands, lakes, and the River Rye and stands as one of Ireland’s most historic country houses.

Martin Mangan, General Manager of Carton House, a Fairmont Managed Hotel, is looking forward to welcoming international guests to the hotel for the estate’s first summer after such a magnificent refurbishment. “Following our domestic re-opening last month, the entire estate could not look more wonderful, and it’s a credit to the owners and to the teams of craftspeople and specialists who have been working to such a high standard for almost two years to bring this important country house back to its original glory. Myself and all the team at Carton House are thrilled to be opening the doors to our international guests, inviting travellers to experience this historic property as it was meant to be experienced. It truly is an extraordinary house to call home this year.”

This is your opportunity to be quite the lord or lady of the manor and experience this spectacular renovation at first-hand and the many new experiences offered within the ancient walls. Whether that’s a tutored wine tasting; a dinner in the cosy and atmospheric setting of Kathleen’s Kitchen, set in the old servants’ kitchens of Carton House; or a delicious picnic basket to enjoy in the resort’s idyllic gardens, parklands and grounds, there are countless treats and treasures to choose from when you stay at Carton House.

You might select a guided whiskey tasting in the cosy book-lined Whiskey Library with its encyclopaedic selection of the world’s finest uisce beatha. Or indulge in Afternoon Tea, seated in one of the beautifully restored grand and imposing rooms in The House with their fascinating history — the stunning Gold Salon, the Drawing Room, the serene Rose Room, the Bell Room — rooms that originally would have entertained aristocratic visitors to Carton House, and take in the same views that have captivated visitors for over 250 years. Have a long-overdue catch-up over light bites and cocktails with family and friends this summer on the outdoor terrace of The Courtyard Bar or have dinner in the impressive surrounds of The Morrison Room — a breath-taking space, The Morrison Room opens today as one of this country’s grandest dining rooms. Luxurious and rejuvenating treatments can be booked in the Carton House Spa & Wellness, a sensory indulgence like no other.

Carton House is home to two championship eighteen-hole golf courses, the challenging links-like course designed by Colin Montgomerie, host to the Irish Open three times, and the classic parkland course designed by Mark O’Meara.

The House is the breath-taking focal feature of a spectacular 1,100-acre estate, the epitome of grandeur and history. Explore the grounds on foot or by bike, following the cycle and walking trails, or enjoy the outdoors by choosing from a wealth of resort activities, from tennis and fishing to horse riding, archery and clay pigeon shooting.

One of Ireland’s most historic country houses, built originally as the home of the influential and aristocratic FitzGerald family, and now in the proud ownership of the American-Irish Mullen family, Carton House is now A Fairmont Managed Hotel. This impressive next chapter as a Fairmont property sees Carton House join the more than 80 Fairmont hotels around the globe as the oldest property in a collection famed for its grande dame hotels, including the iconic Savoy in London and Plaza in New York City.

Sensitively blending past and present, this renovation of Carton House has renewed the beauty of the estate for generations to come. The spectacular 18th century Palladian-style mansion, The House, is at the heart of the estate and will now be the centre of every guest experience today. The remarkably handsome series of grand and imposing rooms in The House with their fascinating history are now beautifully restored and part of the daily rituals of Carton House life and at the heart of each guest’s experience.

Extraordinary Experiences at Xigera Safari Lodge, Botswana

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Botswana:

In the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Xigera (“Kee-jera”) is a safari lodge which reinvents what it means to experience the African bush through inspired hospitality and design.

Having opened in January 2021, the Tollman family have handcrafted every aspect to beguile guests’ senses and stir their souls – from the evocative interiors to one-of-a-kind encounters. Alongside some of the most spectacular game viewing in Botswana, Xigera elevates the guest experience by offering a range of extraordinary wildlife, cultural, culinary and wellness experiences.

From exploring the Delta on a glass-bottomed canoe to overnighting in a luxurious off-grid treehouse, these experiences have been designed to immerse guests into the wilderness and to forge a close connection with the surrounding landscape.

THE BAOBAB TREEHOUSE
An under the stars sleepout experience like no other

A breakaway from traditional safari sleepouts, this unique sleepout is an architectural masterpiece in its own right. Its design has been inspired by the ancient baobab tree, a symbol of Africa, and the iconic artwork of South African artist Jacobus Hendrik Pierneef. Rising 10 meters above the floodplain, this three-story baobab offers thrilling 360-degree views, with wildlife calls drifting in through steel branches, which will slowly rust over time, becoming one with the bush. The top-level deck offers a hidden, safe perch from which to witness the magic of the bush at dusk, or sleep under the stars in an open-air bed covered by a mosquito net. Sleeping two adults, this remote off-grid escape, with no electricity, is designed to appeal to the daring, nature-loving spirit and immerse guests into the wilderness. The sleepout can be a completely personalized experience. When water-levels are high, guests can be taken via glass-bottom mokoro, gliding along the Okavango Delta’s waterways to arrive at the baobab for sundowners and supper. The baobab offers the same sumptuous comforts of the main lodge. The bedroom and bathroom spaces have canvas walls that can open up entirely to the outside environment or be zipped up for privacy. On the open-air upper deck, guests can be treated to a picnic-style supper delivered by a butler at dusk. A breakfast basket is delivered the next morning.

DISCOVER TRAILS LESS TRAVELED ON A GLASS-BOTTOM MOKORO
A unique boat experience for the Okavango – view the vibrant wildlife above and under the water

An experience unique to the Delta is a morning spent gliding along flooded channels by mokoro, the dugout canoe used by generations for transport in a region where there are many more rivers than roads. Though traditionally carved from a single tree trunk, at Xigera, the innovative glass-bottom mokoro is constructed from sturdy fiberglass, allowing for incredible views of the Delta both above and below. Pushed along silently by experienced polers, the mokoro provide the opportunity to discover the wilderness from an entirely new perspective. They are perfect for discovering the filigree of smaller channels in this vast aquatic ecosystem and catching fleeting glimpses of African pike or bright green nembwe fish. Xigera also offer motorboat excursions that allow for deeper exploration of deeper rivers and lagoons, which are home to crocodile and large pods of hippo. For keen anglers, catch-and-release fishing is also available (seasonally) just outside the Moremi Game Reserve.

THE ART & DESIGN TOUR
A living art gallery showcasing the best of African talent

Guests are able to take an immersive and insightful tour of the incredible Xigera Design Collection, conceptualized by Toni Tollman, Philip Fourie and Anton de Kock, in collaboration with award-winning South African gallery Southern Guild. It is a collection that is bold in vision and ground-breaking in its scope, the first of its kind on the continent. From the bar to the boma, the public spaces of Xigera are a living art gallery, showcasing some of Africa’s most exciting artists and artisans. Many of the pieces have been commissioned exclusively for the lodge by some of the most recognizable names in African art from Andile Dyalvane, Madoda Fani, Cecil Skotnes, Porky Hefer, Otto du Plessis and Stanislaw Trzebinski among many others. On this tour, the Xigera team will share the background and interesting stories behind some of the 76 eminent artists and craftspeople whose work is on display. Each collectible piece in this unique collection that celebrates the best in African art, culture and creativity.

STARGAZING
Enjoy storytelling and stargazing around a totemic fire-pit sculpture
by artist-blacksmith Conrad Hicks

The deep cushions in front of the roaring campfire on Xigera’s lookout deck is the place to relax after dark to indulge in some incredible stargazing. With little or no light pollution, the clear skies above Xigera make for sensational viewing of the stars, Milky Way and planets in the expansive sky high above. Xigera’s guides are equipped with laser pointers to help point out interesting features as they share their in-depth knowledge with guests of Botswana’s stars and skies.

HELICOPTER GAME SAFARIS
Take to the skies for a birds-eye view and incredible aerial photographic opportunities

Take off directly outside the lodge on a helicopter safari to have a unique birds-eye view over the Okavango and the extraordinary flora, fauna, and wildlife that surrounds Xigera. Guests are given a headset connecting directly with the pilot, giving the unique opportunity to ask questions as guests soar over the bush or request to fly over places of interest to guarantee incredible wildlife and landscape photography shots taken from above.

BUSH DINING
Embark on a culinary adventure of different outdoor dining experiences

At Xigera, the chefs adopt an ‘anything, anytime approach’, allowing guests the flexibility to create and curate their own memorable dining experiences. Whether it’s a bush breakfast, wild picnic or ‘feet in the water’ sundowners, guests can choose what they would like to eat and when they would like to enjoy it. At the very heart of Xigera is The Boma – Blacksmith Conrad Hicks’ totemic sculpture Structure of Self. This al-fresco centerpiece is the focus point of the lodge where guests can soak up unforgettable Okavango views from the terrace. Executive Chef, Ziyaad Brown, oversees a talented team of chefs from an interactive open kitchen-dining room, creating daily menus, which take inspiration from authentic African ingredients, local traditions and signature dishes from across The Red Carnation Hotel Collection. There is a focus on balancing indulgence with lighter health-focused plates, including flavor packed vegetarian and vegan dishes. From the well-stocked wine cellar, an impressive selection of award-winning wines from across the globe are served alongside these dishes. Xigera’s extensive wine list even includes a range of vintages from Bouchard Finlayson, The Red Carnation’s own wine label from Cape Town in South Africa.

The Best Boutique Hotels in Bariloche, Argentina

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Argentina:

From art hotels with original Argentinian pieces to chalet-style ski resorts, these are the best boutique hotels in Bariloche – all bookable on Culture Trip.

You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stumbled into Central Europe upon arrival in Bariloche, Argentina. With a thriving chocolate industry, ski resorts and chalet-like boutique hotels, there is a distinctly Alpine feel to this Patagonian outpost. Yet, on further inspection, it becomes clear that Bariloche has a distinct character. From pine-fringed Nahuel Huapi lake to the hotel restaurants specializing in sizzling steaks and Malbec wine, this Argentinian city is a delightful blend of cultures. These are the best boutique hotels in town.

El Casco Art Hotel
While the original Argentinian art is certainly worth a look, it’s the views over Nahuel Huapi lake that are the real draw. Ingenious design frames those views from every angle: through the glass wall bordering the indoor pool, over steak and scallops at the Patagonia-inspired restaurant and from the bubbling outdoor hot tub at the spa. Art-filled rooms sport dark-wood furnishings and, in some cases, balconies overlooking the lake.

Aldebaran Hotel & Spa
Aldebaran, with an intimate, cabin-like atmosphere, looks back at Bariloche over an inlet of Nahuel Huapi lake. A fire roars in the stone-walled lobby, wicker abounds in the dimly lit rooms and a sauna and pool invite you to unwind. Book your spot at Sirius restaurant, which has just 20 seats, serving smoked meats and asado, as well as a selection of more than 150 wines. Heading out to explore the area? The staff here specialize in organizing ski trips to nearby Cerro Cathedral.

Galileo Boutique Hotel
From the outside, this boutique hotel, located at the base of Patagonia’s premier ski destination (with 53 slopes), resembles a clapboard chalet resort. Inside, however, rooms have a modern feel and range from king-size studios with a jacuzzi to a four-bedroom villa that sleeps up to 10. Unusually, there’s an astronomical observatory on site, with a Celestron telescope and weekly visits from an amateur guide during the winter season. During the summer, staff can organize biking and paddle boarding trips.

Monasterio
On the pine-forested slopes of Cerro Otto, in suburban Bariloche, accommodation at Monasterio is on the larger side – from the junior suite with hydromassage tub to the wood-panelled two-bed cabin, with fireplace and kitchen-dining room. Tired after skiing? A Scandinavian-style spa offers hot-stone massages and facial treatments along with the use of a sauna and pool. There’s also an on-site gym, if you have the energy.

The One & Only Portonovi offers luxury on Montenegro’s Adriatic

Montenegro

Lord Byron once called this coast “the most beautiful encounter between land and sea”. Now Montenegro has made it on to the luxury-travel map. This Balkan country, part of the former Yugoslavia, with a population of only 628,000, has been under the radar for far too long. But all eyes are on its Adriatic shoreline, where, in Portonovi, the One & Only group has opened its first European hotel.

It joins the country’s rapidly expanding roster of high-end venues, which began with Aman Sveti Stefan in 2011. Since then, the Regent Porto Montenegro and the Chedi Lustica Bay have followed, with a Ritz-Carlton promised for 2024. But Portonovi is where the buzz is this year — and even though Montenegro is on the UK’s amber
