Standard International has signalled its intention to launch a hotel within Zin, real estate specialist Befimmo’s landmark mixed-use scheme in the heart of the Belgian capital.

Befimmo’s ongoing redevelopment of two towers at Brussels’ World Trade Centre in the Northern Quarter, the city’s Central Business District, for an ambitious project known as Zin has received a major boost.

The Standard’s growing international presence

For Standard International, this newly announced property adds to a portfolio of celebrated properties in destinations ranging from New York and Miami to London and the Maldives. And for Befimmo, it promises to significantly strengthen the offer of Zin, which aims to bring an attractive mix of residential, commercial and leisure space under the same roof.

“This property is a perfect step for The Standard in Europe,” said Standard International CEO Amar Lalvani. “Once again, we will be completely and unexpectedly reinventing a property and transforming a neighbourhood. We can’t wait to surprise people and show them just how intriguing Brussels is and why we love it.”

“We are extremely proud to welcome The Standard in Zin,” added Jean-Philip Vroninks, CEO of Befimmo. “This iconic brand fits perfectly within the vision we have for Zin and will amplify the redynamisation of the Brussels North Quarter. Thanks to the mix of functions (offices, hotel, apartments and shared spaces), we will create a building where there will always be life, 24/7, with different users occupying the spaces at different times.”

Designed for guests and locals alike

The Standard, Brussels will accommodate travellers across 180 guestrooms and 20 branded apartments, and feature unique public areas including a lush ground-floor greenhouse and a rooftop showcasing outstanding F&B. Its restaurants and bars will be created with both guests and locals in mind, taking inspiration from the city’s culture and community.

Brussels will add to The Standard’s growing global footprint, following on from the recent announcement of The Standard, Fitzroy in Melbourne. Other upcoming openings include The Standard, Hua Hin, which is slated to open in November 2021, and The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon, expected to launch early next year.

Saudi Arabia

Once a stop along the Incense Route providing a corridor between the East and West, Saudi Arabia’s AlUla has now permanently opened to the public. Forecast as one of Saudi Arabia’s most exciting sites as the country continues to position itself as an exciting tourism destination, AlUla is once again set to be a culturally rich meeting point for people from around the globe.

For the moment, overnight accommodation options are limited to a handful of glamping sites and hotels, but that’s set to change in the coming years, with the arrival of some global big-hitting brands. By 2035 AlUla’s expected to have more than 9400 rooms, with each luxury resort providing its own unique take on desert luxury.

Habitas AlUla
Opening October 2021

habitas alula desert resort

Millennial-focused Habitas, which began life as a brand that brought a like-minded community of travellers together around immersive events, will open an 100-room, luxury eco resort in the desert canyons of Ashar Valley next year. Self-described as a brand that prioritises “human connection and experiences over the traditional luxury experience of five-star hotels”, Habitas’ AlUla resort will consciously blend seamlessly into its desert surroundings, offering visitors historical and cultural experiences to immerse them into the authentic heritage and otherworldly environment of Ashar Valley and the wider AlUla region. The first phase of the resort will open in the first quarter of 2021, when 50 rooms will begin welcoming guests. Further phases are scheduled for completion later next year.

Saudi Arabia’s first Banyan Tree resort will take shape at the Kingdom’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, AlUla, opening for visitors next year. Accor will rebrand and extend the existing Ashar Resort, transforming the property into a high-end desert resort of 82 luxury villas, a plush spa and a number of gourmet dining options. A homage to the heritage site, each of the villas will be ruled by a neutral, natural palette, ensuring it blends seamlessly into the Ashar valley.

Aman AlUla and Janu AlUla
Opening: 2022/3

blank

True to the pioneering spirit of Aman, the luxury brand will bring three new resorts to AlUla, each offering a chance to discover the region’s magnificent unspoilt natural landscapes and archaeological sites, which have long remained undiscovered. As with their previous resorts, Aman will work diligently to preserve the archaeological sites in AlUla and ensure a seamless blending of their properties with the surrounding nature. Each of the three new properties has a different personality for different kinds of vacationers. One with a spectacular ranch-style desert resort to live out your Lone Ranger fantasies, another a luxurious tented camp to awaken the childlike adventurer within you, and a third that revels in simple beauty neighbouring AlUla’s heritage areas. In a bid to expand its global appeal and make the brand more accessible, Aman launched its more affordable sister brand Janu last year, and one of the brand’s three debut resorts will take shape in Saudi’s enigmatic AlUla.

Sharaan by Jean Nouvel
Opening: 2024

Sharaan by Jean Nouvel AlUla

Acclaimed architect Jean Nouvel’s extraordinary Sharaan by Jean Nouvel resort, sustainably carved out of the multi-million year old rocks, is set to be unlike any other. Set to open in 2024, the resort will feature 40 guest suites and three resort villas, plus a retreat summit centre near the resort will be home to 14 private pavilions. Designs draw on the nearby Nabataean wonders of the ancient city of Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, and pay tribute to its 2,000-year-old architectural legacy. Though much of the resort will focus on AlUla’s natural landscape and ancient heritage, guests can also expect degrees of modernity laced throughout. Public spaces promise a focus on enjoying the natural environment from day to night, guest rooms embrace the natural colours and materials of AlUla, and a scenic express lift will bring guests to the heart of the resort, allowing them to travel through millions of years of geological stratas.

Massive investment for Kanyemba

Travel news from around the world

Kenya has developed a comprehensive strategy to promote the untapped incentive tourism niche and hasten the sector’s revival after a slump occasioned by COVID-19 pandemic, officials said.

Muriuki Mureithi, a senior officer at Kenya National Convention Bureau (KNCB), said the government will tap into local and overseas incentive travelers to boost tourism sector recovery, create jobs and generate revenue to the exchequer.

“We have positioned the country as a safe destination for incentive travel and are confident of its potential to revive the tourism sector that is gradually emerging from pandemic downturn,” said Mureithi in the coastal city of Mombasa during the arrival of a chartered flight from Romania carrying 53 incentive travelers who are slated to visit different scenic attractions in Kenya.

Mureithi said the Romanian tourists who are on a week-long vacation in Kenya will help promote the country as a safe destination after easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

He said Kenya has developed a conducive environment to spur growth of incentive tourism and compete favorably with established markets in Africa including Morocco, Seychelles. And the government will leverage meetings, incentive travel, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) to boost recovery of the tourism sector that contributes about 10 percent to the country’s gross domestic product.

Anghel Cristian-Daniel, general manager of Map Travel that facilitated the arrival of 53 incentive travelers from Romania, said that Kenya remains an attractive destination for overseas tourists amid favorable weather and security.

He said there will be weekly chartered flights from Romania to Kenya with easing of travel restrictions combined with enhanced COVID-19 containment measures.

Jeff Mukolwe, general manager of Swahili Beach Hotel, said the ongoing vaccine rollout in the country has injected confidence in foreign tourists keen to sample beach destinations.

He said the 53 Romanian tourists were the first batch of incentive travelers to visit Kenya since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, adding that the country’s declining COVID-19 caseload was having a positive outcome on the tourism sector.

DumaTau news

Design stories: DumaTau and Little DumaTau, Botswana

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Botswana:

In April 2021, Wilderness Safaris successfully reopened DumaTau – and debuted its new sister camp Little DumaTau – overlooking the Osprey Lagoon in the Linyanti area of northern Botswana. Working alongside the conservation tourism operator’s in-house design and development team, Luxury Frontiers reimagined the architecture, while Artichoke lead interior designer Caline Williams-Wynn and Johannesburg-based artist Gina Waldman overhauled the interiors and art across the intimate scheme, which collectively features just 12 suites, a spa, and a dining and lounge area.

Luxury Frontiers had recently completed a refurbishment of King’s Pool with Wilderness Safaris in 2019 and, upon the success of that project, were fortunately appointed for the redevelopment of the nearby DumaTau camp, also located in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve in Botswana.

It was both the client’s and our goal to maintain the soul and innate beauty of the beloved camp while expanding, upgrading and revitalising its public areas and accommodation units.

The iconic tented silhouette and architecture is the essence of the camp – we didn’t want to change that. So we kept most of the roofs due to the longevity of the canvas that was used for the original lodge.

Adding a new tectonic layer of timber-cladded elements served to create consistency with the areas added to the existing structures.

Oriented towards the north west, DumaTau’s prominent views direct naturally towards the breath-taking lagoon. This position, however, exposes the camp directly to the heat gain from the afternoon sun.

Drawing from the name DumaTau, meaning ‘roar of the lion’, Luxury Frontiers looked towards a lion’s love for lazing in the shade for inspiration. By introducing expansive shaded decks fitted with plunge pools, heat gain is prevented, and sun rays are blocked from entering the internal area.

Aligned with Wilderness Safaris’ emphasis on sustainability and ban on concrete, Luxury Frontiers focused on minimising waste by strategically refitting and reusing existing materials where possible.

The timber decks from the original camp could no longer be used for flooring, thus presenting the ideal opportunity to repurpose this material by adding timber cladding to DumaTau’s tents while retaining their iconic silhouette. Using reclaimed wood juxtaposes the tented façade and retains the tent’s explorer typology.

Luxury Frontiers embraced the timber’s imperfections through a ribbed pattern that highlights the beautifully matured panels and adds texture and depth to the façade. Repurposing the timber from the original DumaTau and the transportation pallets plays a crucial role in limiting the camp’s carbon footprint and adds a deep-rooted sense of place and poetic nostalgia.

DumaTau has long been a guest favourite of Wilderness Safaris, so our intention was not to completely change the camp, but rather enhance what was already there and create a similar experience at Little DumaTau.

Working during the pandemic turned the revitalisation project into an interesting build. Everybody pulled together, and we are humbled to have been able to work with such a stellar team in these trying times.

One of the biggest challenges was navigating the existing structures and adding the required spaces without damaging existing trees. To remedy this challenge, we purposefully designed the new layouts so they could be adapted to mitigate changes onsite.

We started the project towards the end of 2018 and completed it in March of 2021, so the work took two and a half years from start to finish.

We are so thrilled to be a part of the project and work with such amazing partners, including Wilderness Safaris and Artichoke Interiors, with artist Gina Waldman. The media reception has been stellar, with DumaTau listed on AD’s hotel list for Best New Openings 2021.

With the architectural renewal from Luxury Frontiers complete, it’s a new era for DumaTau and its new sister Little DumaTau – one that connects guests to nature through an ongoing dialogue and symbiosis.

InterContinental Hotels & Resorts brings a new luxury experience to Azerbaijan

IHG Hotels & Resorts, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, has debuted its world-renowned luxury brand InterContinental Hotels & Resorts in Azerbaijan with the recent opening of InterContinental Baku.

The 128-room, new-build property overlooks the scenic Baku Bay, allowing guests to experience the InterContinental Life in luxurious modern surroundings while enjoying mesmerizing views of the Caspian Sea, harbour and Baku’s iconic Flame Towers. The city of Baku is a melting point of architecture inspired by the city’s rich history and seamlessly combines the ancient and modern.

Baku is known for its “oil-boom architecture,” originating from a period of significant economic growth and development in the 19th century. The hotel’s façade is inspired by this style, and the rest of the hotel’s design is inspired by the region’s breath-taking landscape, history, and culture, and interwoven with InterContinental’s modern luxury design to create an air of elegance and contemporary grandeur.

InterContinental Hotels & Resorts is famed for blending international know-how with a city’s cultural heritage and InterContinental Baku is no exception. Guests can become familiar with legendary medieval poet and scientist Nizami Ganjavi who was born in Azerbaijan in the 12th century, considered the greatest romantic epic poet in Persian literature. His greatest collection of poems, Khamsa, is reflected in the hotel’s interior design and inspired the names of different hotel facilities, from the restaurant to the meeting spaces. The hotel features seven floors of elegantly designed guest rooms, an all-day dining restaurant offering a thoughtful balance of local and Mediterranean cuisine and a SPA with indoor pool and hammam. The mezzanine floor features the hotel’s Club InterContinental – named Iksander-nameh after Nizami’s ode to Alexsander the Great – with spectacular views of the Baku Gulf and Caspian Sea and offers signature discreet private check-in and meeting and dining spaces.

The hotel’s 128 contemporary guestrooms, including 6 Junior Suites, blend luxury with technology and comfort. Designed for the needs of the worldly luxury traveller, rooms offer Wi-Fi access and a spacious workspace with task lighting and USB ports, smart touch panels specially designed for a guest’s needs, coffee and tea facilities, and indulgent bedding. The Presidential Suite offers luxury and exclusivity with its own sauna and fitness facilities, along with a spacious private terrace, fully equipped kitchen, two bedrooms and a large living space including a working and dining area.

The Seven Beauties Spa draws its name and aesthetics from a sensual poem written by Nazami in 1197, and the space and treatments are inspired by the area’s rich history and traditions, with beautiful marble tiling and delicate lighting. Guests and visitors are invited to indulge, disconnect, and delight in the indoor swimming pool, sauna, hammam, gym and treatment rooms.

InterContinental Baku’s Khamsa Restaurant showcases and blends Mediterranean and Azerbaijani local culinary gems. Visitors can enjoy a spacious dining atmosphere while tasting the very best locally sourced produce and accompanying the dining experience with a selection of over 50 wines from leading local and internationally recognised wineries. There is also a private dining room available for unforgettable private gatherings and events.

Located in the very centre of Baku, the hotel is adjacent to both the Sahil metro station and the famed 25km-long Seaside Boulevard, which harmoniously connects the unique architectural styles of the urban districts with Icheri Sheher – the Old City – a UNESCO World Heritage site developed from the 6th to the 21st century. Baku Airport is only 25 km away.

Pawel Czerwienka, General Manager of InterContinental Baku commented on the opening: “As the world’s first international luxury hotel brand, with 75 years of pioneering travel across the globe, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts has proudly become an iconic symbol of sophistication and worldliness. The brand is renowned for weaving modern luxury design through its collection of iconic properties and we can’t wait for guests to live the InterContinental Life experience at the brand-new InterContinental Baku.”

The opening is the first in a host of openings for InterContinental Hotels & Resorts in its 75th diamond anniversary year which will celebrate the return of travel. The brand will also see exciting openings in Barcelona, Spain; Grand Ho Tram, Vietnam; Luanda, Angola; Ras Al Khaimah, UAE; Khao Yai, Thailand; Sydney, Australia and Appi Kogen, Japan through the remainder of 2021.

Switzerland Tourism re-launches Million Stars Hotel project

Travel news from around the world

Switzerland:

The Million Stars Hotel offering features “hotel rooms” dotted throughout Switzerland, where guests can experience nature in its purest form – and in an entirely exclusive location meant for two.

The 2021 Million Stars Hotel project includes 50 or so accommodation options that can be found in all Swiss language regions and in 12 tourist regions. Each room offers a direct view of the starry sky from the comfort of the guest’s bed. Of the 50 or so hotel rooms from 2020, two-thirds were included again this year, while the remaining third are entirely new to the Million Stars Hotel project. Almost 40 new accommodation proposals were submitted by tourism providers across Switzerland.

The Million Stars Hotels’ offering will remain open until the end of October 2021 (depending on altitude). Room prices range from CHF 80 to around CHF 1,300 per night for two people, including breakfast.

Travellers looking for luxury and an urban setting should head to the Suite Loft of Hotel Beau Rivage in Geneva. Those looking for something totally remote should opt for an experience under the stars at the Lötschenpasshütte or the panorama tent on the Fronalpstock. For passionate golfers, there is the Golf Night Experience on the edge of the Golf Club di Losone, while one-of-a-kind experiences in the chestnut forest are guaranteed at the Al GÜZ in Bergell.

An official release by Switzerland Tourism states, “In 2020, the Million Stars Hotel generated almost 4,300 overnight stays (50 per cent STC bookings, 40 per cent direct bookings, 10 per cent other booking channels) – mainly by Swiss guests, though notably often from a different language region.

“ST is confident that running this project again in summer and autumn 2021 will now increasingly inspire guests from Europe and other overseas countries to book a special sleeping experience with a view of the stars in Switzerland, insofar as travel is permitted without any severe restrictions.

“Given the broad international coverage of the project last year, the prospects are good: especially in the key foreign market of Germany, there was great media interest, though media in the foreign markets of Korea, Southeast Asia, and North America also reported on the special hotel project.”

Budapest’s Newest Luxury Hotel Is Built Inside a Restored UNESCO Landmark

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Budapest:

The late 19th century was a particularly heady era for Budapest. Elegant architecture was flourishing, and Princess Marie Clotilde of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who resided in Hungary with her husband Archduke Joseph Karl of Austria, wanted to partake in the Belle Époque’s renaissance. With all the fanfare over the forthcoming Elisabeth Bridge linking the Buda and Pest sides of the Danube River, the princess decided to commission a duo of grand, symmetrical buildings poised at the bridge’s Pest-side entrance. And now, after years of neglect, one of those UNESCO-protected structures was just transformed into Matild Palace, the city’s first Luxury Collection hotel. (Klotild Palace, its sibling, will also become part of the Marriott family when it finds new life as a St. Regis in a few years.)

Budapest is strewn with five-star properties like the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, the Aria Hotel Budapest and, most recently, the Párisi Udvar Hotel, which debuted as part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection in 2019. But Matild Palace’s calling card is a deft balance of past and present.

“Matild Palace reimagines its legacy while effortlessly capturing the many facets that make the city so spectacular—the diverse and vibrant culinary offerings, incredible cultural significance and breath taking architecture and design,” Philipp Weghmann, vice president and global brand leader for the Luxury Collection, tells Robb Report. “The building holds the key to the city’s glamorous past, with history found at every turn, and we look forward to welcoming travelers to discover its magic and allure once again.”

Completed in 1902 by the architects Kálmán Giergl and Flóris Korb (who also worked on the New York Palace and the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, both of them Budapest landmarks), the neo-baroque Matild Palace was, by all accounts, stunning. It featured Zsolnay ceramics—even to encase the heaters—and vivid stained glass works by the renowned Hungarian artist Miksa Róth, and was awash in intricate ironwork and moldings. Many of those striking details have now been thoughtfully restored by artisans, under the supervision of London firm MKV Design; you can spy the stained glass on the hotel’s mezzanine level, for example, along with a selection of Zsolnay pieces.

In the 130 guest rooms and suites—which were converted from the apartments where members of the monarchy and upper classes once dwelled—there are jolts of peacock blue and stunning embroidered headboards that reference The Adventures of Sindbad, a Hungarian classic published in 1911 by Gyula Krúdy, one of the writers who frequented the Belvárosi Coffee House literary hangout once housed in the palace.

Most rooms flaunt bathrooms that are brightened by blue and gold tiles—a nod to Budapest’s famous mosaic-covered Gellért Baths—but some are simply swathed in marble, calling to mind hammams. (Guests who want to properly partake of the Turkish hammam ritual can head down to the petite Swan Spa.) Top room options include the Crown Tower Suite, which is carved into the building’s 157-foot-high tower and features a dizzying spiral staircase, and the Maria Klotild Royal Suite, with super-sized living room and panoramic city and river views.

But while Matild Palace celebrates its historic roots, it still manages to feel modern. A selection of slope-roofed Loft category rooms and suites on the fifth floor—a nod to the studio spaces of the artists the princess once patronized—forgo touches like the signature headboards in favour of contemporary artwork and furnishings. And the lobby’s towering vintage photo collage lives alongside a large-scale sculptural chandelier reminiscent of a gleaming snowflake.

Plus, there is the first Central European outpost of Wolfgang Puck’s Spago (the closest other location is in Istanbul). Staying true to the famous brand’s roots, the always-packed restaurant’s sprawling terrace has a distinctly LA vibe, with greenery and coral lounge chairs setting the scene for cocktails and late lunches of spicy lamb sausage pizza. Later this summer, it will be joined by the Duchess, a cocktail bar with a moody jungle aesthetic that will open on the roof.

Even more fitting will be the autumn arrival of Matild Café and Cabaret, which was inspired by the old coffee house stage that was unearthed during the renovation. Intimate musical performances will unfold regularly here—but it will likely be the homemade cakes, served amid glorious period chandeliers, that will plunge guests right back into bygone bohemian days.

New Zealand:

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, the world’s largest hotel franchising company and leading provider of hotel management services with 8,900 hotels worldwide, has continued its expansion in New Zealand with the opening of two new hotels, developed by its long-standing development partner, Safari Group.

Within New Zealand, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts operates 15 hotels under three of its distinct brands—Wyndham Garden®, Ramada® by Wyndham, and La Quinta by Wyndham—with locations in Auckland, Queenstown, Christchurch, Albany, Rotorua, Taipa, Hamilton and Wanaka.

The opening of Ramada Suites by Wyndham Taranaki Street Wellington and Ramada by Wyndham Newmarket Auckland marks its 11th hotel developed by the Safari Group in the country.

The new properties add to the company’s growing portfolio in Asia Pacific, with more than 1,500 hotels across 20 markets and territories throughout the South East Asia and Pacific Rim and Greater China sub-regions, making Wyndham Hotels & Resorts one of the largest international hotel chains in the region.

The continued growth of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts in the region provides a network of trusted and world-class accommodation options in key destinations across New Zealand including Auckland, Hamilton, Queenstown, Christchurch, and now Wellington, with Ramada Suites by Wyndham Taranaki Street Wellington, which marks the hotel group’s debut into the capital city.

The two new-construction properties offer a range of hotel, studio and self-contained accommodation options in central locations, close to shopping, dining and entertainment precincts, which are ideal for both business and leisure travellers, seeking long or short-term stays.

Tourism New Zealand’s travel statistics show that the desire for New Zealanders to spend money on domestic travel has increased, with 72 per cent of New Zealanders planning a holiday within their own country this year. This is an increase from 64 per cent in May 2020.

“With New Zealanders seeking domestic travel more than ever, our two new hotels in highly sought-after locations will help cater to the increased number of New Zealand travellers in 2021 looking to explore the best of their own backyard,” said Joon Aun Ooi, President, Asia Pacific, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

“Our ongoing partnership with Safari Group in New Zealand has allowed us to continue to offer accommodation that guests can trust, no matter where they are travelling from and giving them peace of mind in an uncertain travel environment, with the guarantee of flexibility and high-quality accommodation options.”

Robert Neil, Owner, Safari Group added, “We are very pleased to be building even further on our strong partnership with Wyndham Hotels & Resorts as we continue to create properties for business and leisure travellers across New Zealand.”

“The Wyndham Hotels & Resorts brands are synonymous with great value, high-quality accommodation and exceptional customer service. As the largest hotel franchising company in the world, they are well-positioned to provide the essential support from pre-opening to everyday operations, to ensure the best experience possible for guests.”

Ramada by Wyndham Newmarket Auckland will be managed by Accommodation Works Limited, a welcomed addition to the Wyndham Hotels & Resorts family as a new operator strengthening the New Zealand network of owners, operators, and partners.

Ramada Suites by Wyndham Taranaki Street Wellington will be operated by long-term management partner Marsden Group and will mark the eighth Wyndham Hotels & Resorts branded hotel in New Zealand, operated by the Group.

“We truly value and appreciate the ongoing support and loyalty from our established partner Marsden Group, and are pleased to warmly welcome Accommodation Works Limited on our first collaboration with the operator,” said Ben Schumacher, Vice President, Operations, South East Asia and Pacific Rim, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

“We look forward to building on a successful partnership with both operators, continuing to create first-class hospitality experiences for our valued and loyal guests,” he said.

Four Seasons Hotel Milano Reopens After Renovation

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Italy:

Four Seasons Hotel Milano has reopened in the heart of Milan’s fashion district following a six-month renovation, unveiling renewed spaces with contemporary interiors by designer and architect Patricia Urquiola. Situated in a former 15th-century convent, Four Seasons Hotel Milano, which first opened its doors in 1993, has transformed its lobby area, restaurant, bar and garden in the first phase of renovation.

In the lobby, guests can expect a new, lighter paint job, bronze inserts and mirrors—all intended to “interplay with the original frescoes and period features of the former convent.” There’s also a variety of new hanging lamps, table lamps and floor lighting. Furniture classics from Italian design brands decorate the areas.

New Dining

Through the lobby, guests reach Zelo, the new restaurant helmed by Executive Chef Fabrizio Borraccino. During the day, the restaurant changes its identity to Zelo Bistrot, and the expanded outdoor area allows for seating both inside and out. Zelo Bistrot offers a menu of light dishes, while in the evening, Zelo proposes both an à la carte menu as well as a tasting menu of the chef’s creations. The menu, Four Seasons says, has been completely redone to reflect guests’ evolving tastes and Chef Borraccino’s focus on Italian cuisine and the best local producers.

Stilla, the new bar, is positioned to the left of the lobby. The circular bar is appointed with cognac leather armchairs and velvet seating and sofas in shades of red and dark green. Guests can also sit outside in the hotel’s garden. The new menu created by Bar Manager Luca Angeli offers innovative new signature drinks and has a focus on ice craftsmanship. The menu has everything from Aeropress American coffee to a classic club sandwich to Negroni Sbagliato. Health-conscious guests can look forward to light plates and salads.

The Camino—the Italian word for fireplace—has also been transformed into a lounge with a wine cellar/tasting room. Here, guests can experience sommelier Lorenza Panzera’s wine list while listening to the beats of a DJ seat.

The Garden. The hotel’s cloister garden, which hosts seating areas for both Stilla and Zelo, has been renewed by landscape architect and agronomist Flavio Pollano, an expert in vertical green, botanics and garden design. The garden will also host a new raw bar, where guests can enjoy food and drinks on summer evenings while listening to the tunes of a DJ.

The renovated areas also feature curated contemporary artwork selected to interplay with the hotel’s past.

With this first phase of renovation completed, Four Seasons Hotel Milano reopens its doors while embarking on the phased renovation of rooms, suites and meeting areas.

Las Vegas:

The Venetian Resort has announced several new updates to the property’s 2.25 million-square-foot convention centre and expo, including a change of name for two of its meetings-focused venues.

Beginning September 2, the Sands Expo & Convention Centre will be known as The Venetian Expo and The Venetian Congress Centre will be referred to as The Venetian Convention Centre. According to the company, the new name for the expo space aligns with The Venetian brand while the name change for The Venetian Congress Centre is designed to better reflect the function of the space.

This year, The Venetian Expo will host several of the Top 25 trade shows in the United States, including ISC WestHIMSS Global Health Conference & ExhibitionJCK Las Vegas, and American Urological Association.

In addition, the resort has begun booking its newest meeting room, The Stella Studio. A multi-functional venue with more than 8,000 square feet of space, the studio offers a private meeting or event space, with natural light, and is customizable to meet the needs of small to midsize groups. The studio’s dedicated kitchen and full bar make the space well-suited for receptions, coffee and continental breakfast.

The Venetian Resort has also launched its Venetian Meetings Virtual Planner, a tool aimed at MICE professionals that allows prospective customers to customize and research venues prior to contacting a representative at the resort. The tool also allows a prospect to request a proposal from the sales team on property. In addition to providing the dimensions and capacities for each venue, Venetian Meetings Virtual Planner takes users through a virtual tour of the venues and provides fly-through videos and photos. Once a user has determined their event space, they are able to design a configuration to suit their needs, in two and three dimensions, and attach the customized layout to the RFP.

The Carlton Tower Jumeirah Opens Following Complete Renovation

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

London:

The Carlton Tower Jumeirah has opened in the heart of London’s fashionable Knightsbridge district following a $137 million, 18-month renovation, which refreshed the rooms and added new dining choices, spa and lobby entrance.

Previously known as Jumeirah Carlton Tower, The Carlton Tower Jumeirah has launched under a new name to reflect the significance of the most extensive transformation in its history.

Originally designed 60 years ago by Henry End, also responsible for the interiors of New York’s Plaza Hotel, the five-star property was redesigned by 1508 London. While respecting the building’s original, clean modernist style, the design studio layered an eclectic mix inspired by the architecture of surrounding mansion blocks and homes with soft curved edges, pops of bright colour and organic inspired forms throughout.

Among the changes, there is a new foyer and reception, health club and spa with London’s “largest naturally lit swimming pool,” flagship restaurant, lobby bar and lounge, ballroom and meeting rooms.

The number of rooms has been reduced from 216 to 186 to allow more space and natural light. Of these, 87 rooms have balconies offering views of the city. The new Royal Suite is the hotel’s most exclusive residence with three bedrooms and comes with an option to privatize the entire floor.

The destination restaurant Al Mare, meaning “at the sea” in Italian, offers a sophisticated yet informal dining experience for guests. Head Chef Marco Calenzo, who has previously worked in Michelin stars from Tokyo to Hawaii, draws from his Italian heritage to design the menu of light and modern Italian fare complemented by a wine list and artisanal cocktails. Accessed from the lobby is The Chinoiserie, an all-day dining area that won the “Afternoon Tea of the Year” award in 2018. The hotel has also partnered with Annabel Karmel, an award-winning children’s cookery and nutrition expert based in the U.K., to design children’s menus at both restaurants.

The Peak Fitness Club & Spa, covering three floors of the hotel, has been completely redesigned with new treatment rooms at the Talise Spa and a revitalized swimming pool with new cabanas and thermal areas. The gym overlooks the city and offers studio classes and latest exercise equipment. In addition, the hotel sits on Cadogen Gardens, which offers a lush and private green space for additional wellness recreation such as yoga and tennis.

The hotel’s ballroom on the first-floor seats up to 400 people and can be entered by private entrance or via a grand staircase with a cascading chandelier. In addition, there are three contemporary meeting rooms, filled with natural light and overlooking the gardens.

Centrally located, the Jumeirah Carlton Tower hotel is steps away from luxury shopping at Harrods and Sloane Street, cultural institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum, and several local restaurants. Flights are offered daily from major U.S. cities on Delta, United, American and British Airways airlines into Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, London Luton and London Stansted airports, all within an appropriate distance to the hotel.  Guests flying in can also enjoy chauffeur services and airport transfers.

The 5 Most Exciting London Hotel Openings in 2021

The 5 Most Exciting London Hotel Openings in 2021

When London reopens to the world, these new hotels—stylish townhouses, global brands, and a refreshed grande dame—will be waiting.

While the United Kingdom remains off limits for many visitors around the world, a slate of exciting new London hotels have made their debut in the capital, with more to come. Here are a few to bookmark for when borders reopen.

All hotels are open as of May 20, 2021, when hospitality lockdown restrictions lifted.

The Mayfair Townhouse
What to Expect: A stylish new social hub in London
Neighborhood: Mayfair

In London’s Mayfair, Half Moon Street was Oscar Wilde’s social stomping ground. He belonged to a nearby men’s club and set his play The Importance of Being Earnest on the townhouse-lined street. Today, the new 172-room Mayfair Townhouse there has a whimsical and smart vibe—the owners describe it as “Oscar Wilde meets Alice in Wonderland.”

Set across 15 townhouses—7 of which are Grade II listed, with particular architectural significance—the property has shed anything corporate from its former life as a Hilton.

The first thing you see when you walk in is Alfie, the hotel’s sparkly peacock sculpture, encrusted with 26,000 Swarovski crystals. It’s a first feel of the hotel’s celebration of the “dandy lifestyle,” a term that historically meant the pursuit of the finer things in life—and there is a lot of pleasure here, including the brilliant Dandy Bar, where the signature cocktails have names like the Casanova, the Earl of Mayfair, Chic, and Madame Fox.

A mischievous and chic fox is the hotel’s mascot, adorning every room door. And the artwork throughout is the opposite of musty townhouse—contemporary fine art portraits of the fictional Renard (“fox” in French) family by Miss Aniela feel amusing and peculiar, a mash-up of the 19th and 21st centuries.

Some of the rooms, peaceful and deep-hued in blue, green, and gold, have gardens and balconies. Late night cravings can be satisfied with British snacks from the free minibar offerings, like Mr. Filbert’s olives and cheese and onion potato chips from the British Crisp Co. If you’re solo, don’t discount the wonderful entry-level cabin rooms—they’re one of the best small-room offerings in the luxury London market.

The Mayfair Townhouse is a part of Iconic Luxury Hotels, which includes country hotels Chewton Glen in Hampshire and Cliveden in Berkshire. You get just a hint of country life with the Noble Isle bath amenities, which, to me, smell like a sweet British summer day.

Henry’s Townhouse
What to Expect: An exclusive-use property with top design and Jane Austen vibes
Neighborhood: Marylebone

Henry’s Townhouse is the other splashy townhouse opening this year, but it’s just one Grade II-listed house in Marylebone—and its seven bedrooms are exclusive-use only. For a family reunion, wedding party, or holiday gathering, this is a great new option in London’s hospitality scene.

Who is Henry? He was Jane Austen’s brother, and he lived in this house for about five years. (Jane did visit him here.) He managed her estate after she died. Today, the narrow townhouse has one staircase going up five floors, a cozy front lounge, a state-of-the-art kitchen and dining room for breakfast, and a “snug,” a slim space to read or enjoy late-night conversation. While the kitchen is perfect for cappuccinos and eggs, it also works equally well for a corporate retreat with big-screen tech.

Each room is Georgian in style and named for a member of Jane Austen’s family—pink-themed Eliza is the most romantic room with a dramatic four-poster bed, while my favourite was James—I loved the chartreuse couch, and it feels slightly more modern.

You can easily become absorbed in the artwork and books, from Jane Austen first editions costing thousands of pounds housed in a glass bookcase, to an antique painting that owner Steven Collins told me he “found for 20 quid” at a market in Nice. Collins and his wife, Jane, an interiors and antiques expert, designed the townhouse with Russell Sage Studio, incorporating their personal art collection and taste.

The secret weapon of the house is Ann, the townhouse manager who lives in an adjacent apartment. Warm, lovely, and efficient, you will wish she ran your entire life, not just your time at Henry’s Townhouse. It feels like a hotel of your very own, thanks to her.

NoMad London
What to Expect: An iconic New York City brand arrives in London
Neighborhood: Covent Garden

New Yorkers will feel familiarity at London’s new outpost of the Roman and Williams–designed NoMad, its first outside the United States. To start, the library is filled with New York books on the shelves.

“It is a conversation between New York City and London,” Sydell Group CEO Andrew Zobler told me. But it’s very London, built in a former police station and Magistrates’ Court, right in the middle of Covent Garden and across the street from the Royal Opera House. That location, in the centre of the city’s nightlife, drives the hotel’s offerings.

The Royal Opera Suite, one of the hotel’s 91 rooms, feels fit for an opera star with gold bathtub, rich fabrics, and light streaming in through tall windows.

The NoMad restaurant is set in a soaring atrium filled with greenery and light—it will appear on Instagram feeds everywhere. At New York’s NoMad, the roast chicken has been a famous menu item since it opened in 2012. The London version is a chicken dinner for the whole table, at £70 a person, including starter and dessert.

For a more casual dining option, Side Hustle feels like a pub in style but serves Mexican street food like tacos and tostadas, something sorely missing in London. Coming soon: a late-night cocktail lounge called Common Decency.

Nobu Hotel London Portman Square
What to Expect: The Nobu brand expands in London with a second property
Neighborhood: Marylebone

Last winter, the new Nobu Hotel London Portman Square—the second Nobu hotel in London after Shoreditch—was open for just a few days before lockdown. But after its reopening several weeks ago, I found myself sitting across from Kate Moss at the hotel’s restaurant. While celebrity culture feels very early aughts, it did lend a bit of welcome glam, the feel of a kickstart to the roaring 20s after months of dreary lockdown.

Celebrities aside, the 249-room hotel, anchored by its enormous signature restaurant, feels very much like a Place To Be, an urban watering hole for cool cocktails in the dimly lit Nobu bar or a morning coffee and the paper in the Lobby Lounge, whether you’re staying or not.

You’ll want to book far in advance for a table at the restaurant—Londoners have filled every prime dinner slot to indulge in the signature dishes like yellowtail jalapeño, crispy rice with spicy tuna, and black cod miso.

Throughout the public spaces, the design is Japanese inspired—sleek, neutral, and calm—but with show stopping elements like a 16-foot kinetic sculpture in the high-ceilinged lobby, mesmerizing as it turns. Interiors were designed by David Collins Studio, a firm specializing in hotels like Gleneagles in Scotland, but also lifestyle spaces like Harrod’s dining hall and the Alexander McQueen flagship store in Paris.

The defining feature of the hotel is the Nobu Pilates studio, the first of its kind from the brand. Led by former Equinox instructor Marsha Lindsay, and with three signature classes, Power, Pure, and Precision, the studio—like the restaurant—feels very Los Angeles-in-London and is already a big hit with Marylebone locals. There is also a large gym and juice bar. Here, you’re just a short walk away from the charming Marylebone high street and one of London’s special smaller museums, the Wallace Collection.

The Dilly
What to Expect: A refurbed and renamed grande dame
Neighborhood: Piccadilly

The Dilly, previously under Marriott management, has debuted a refurbished look (with more to come) and new name on London’s Piccadilly, walking distance from Piccadilly Circus, Soho, Chinatown, and the theater district to one side, and on the other, shopping emporium Fortnum & Mason, Hatchards (the oldest bookshop in the U.K.), and the Royal Academy of the Arts.

Although I have passed the property countless times, I never realized what an incredible history it has, first operating as a hotel in 1908, in the era of guests coming over on Cunard ships. While many hotels erase history in favor of modernity, I love the slightly creaky floors and the gilded, original ceilings. There is a dance studio—the only one at a London hotel—where guests can take classes like ballroom, two indoor squash courts, the only outdoor terrace on Piccadilly for breakfast, and a greenhouse restaurant for its Peter Rabbit–themed afternoon tea.

I suggest dressing for cocktails in the Oak Lounge before dinner—a welcome feeling after this past year—before dining on upscale Indian at Madhu’s of Mayfair, doing a six-month pop-up residency for now. Of the 283 rooms, the 12 Dilly suites shine, some with views of Parliament and Big Ben.

There are London touches everywhere—partnerships with brands like flower shop Pullbrook & Gould and local perfumery Floris. Guests can hire a bike for £10 a day and take a picnic basket to Hyde Park or St. James’s Park. This is a great choice for families who want to be in the centre of London—and for dog owners, as it’s very dog friendly. I am hoping that its grand dame status continues to shine with independent ownership.
