Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Granted “SafeBE” Certification

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre has become Malaysia’s first venue to be granted the “Safe Business Events” (SafeBE) certification, a hygiene and safety label, by Bureau Veritas.

Initiated and supported by the Business Events Council Malaysia, the certification program gained collaboration from Malaysian Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers and the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau to drive the venue certification process to create an end-to-end safe and secure event journey for organizers and participants alike. It recognizes a venue’s implementation of the government-endorsed Business Events Standard Operating Procedures and the team’s operational excellence in event management, food and hospitality service standards in the new norm.

The centre was assessed on its processes, facilities and people in order to be deemed worthy of accreditation. The assessment was based on correct implementation of equipment, tools, quality standards, team knowledge, training and expertise, in order to ensure the venue’s compliance with the assessors’ criteria and ability to operate safely in the new norm.

Alan Pryor, the venue’s general manager, said in a press release, “We want every step of the event organizer and visitor journey to instill trust and assurance in our venue, team and the destination. This is part of our broader strategy for business recovery and continuity, as well as our mission to increase public and business confidence in the international standards of venue operations in Malaysia. We highly recommend that other venues undertake this certification program to elevate the country’s attractive value proposition and profile as a safe destination for business events.”

Last year, the Malaysian Association of Hotel and Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents initiated a similar safety certification standard, the “Clean and Safe Malaysia” and “Travel Safe Malaysia: Hygiene Excellence and Safety Label,” respectively. With the business events industry also embarking on this path, Malaysia’s tourism and hospitality industry is set to welcome back event delegates and visitors safely.

Global sports tourism expected to keep growing

airline news

Travel news from around the world

At a time when tourism begins to recover from the COVID-19 impact, the sport industry is set to become one of the main players in the next decade. The global sports tourism industry expects to grow an average of 16.1% a year between 2021 and 2030 according to a study by Allied Market Research, stating that this industry will generate approximately 1.5 trillion euros, five times more than in 2020.

The increase in GDP and its contribution to employment, the popularity of sports tourism to break the monotonous lifestyle, the introduction of apps for ticket sales, and the increase in spending capacity are driving the world market for sports tourism.

The study recognizes that the industry took a hit after the pandemic due to the cancellation of sports events and border closures, and predicts the market will recover in 2022 thanks to the mass vaccination. In addition, the study pointed out that racing events like Formula 1 and Grand Prix motorcycle are the main drivers of the industry. This type of events is expected to grow 17.4% on average every year.

In 2020, US$323,400 million were generated by the sports industry. By type, the domestic travel segment dominated the market in terms of revenue, accounting for almost 60% of the global sports tourism market due to heavy investments in sports infrastructure and the popularity of the events in various countries.

However, the international market is expected to show a higher average annual growth from 2021 until 2030, with an annual increase of 16.8% in the next decade due to the increase in disposable income, the improvement of infrastructure, favourable government policies for international tourists, and the relations between host countries and fans interested in traveling.

Last year, Europe had the highest share of travel for sports-related reasons, followed by North America. In 2020, Europe held 40% of the market due to a high population interested in traveling to see or play sports. Now in 2021, the highest growth is expected to be recorded in the Asia-Pacific region, with an average annual growth of 17.7%. However, due to the pandemic in 2020, this industry generated much less than in 2019, for example, the decline of sports tourism in Spain was 81.6%, which means that 3,740 million euros were lost over the pandemic. It is not a minor issue for the country, since trips to watch soccer, tennis, Formula 1 and Grand Prix motorcycle are its main drivers.

(Safe) comeback of the MICE/event industry

airline news

Travel news from around the world
More travel news

Upcoming mega events like the Expo Dubai or the World Travel Market in London, give proof that the global meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions or MICE industry celebrates a cautious comeback. Despite ongoing worries about booster vaccines and the delta variant of Covid-19, there are multiple ways to keep social mass gatherings secure for everyone.

It could have been the comeback summer for mega-events with real humans after a -year long hiatus. But neither the Euro football championships nor the Summer Olympics in Tokyo could keep their promises of holding safe games, unfortunately. The tournament’s final in London’s Wembley Stadium became a super-spreader amid 60,000 football aficionados, triggering a surge in the spread of the delta variant in the UK.

And Nippon saw despite a global sports spectacle sans fans a rebound of new COVID-19 infections too. Other major international events like the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos or the Paris air show had to be cancelled in 2021. By March 2020, the events industry had already lost $16.5bn, according to UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, and the global tourism industry witness a fall of around 74% in international tourist arrival during the pandemic.

Good-bye zoom calls, hello conferences!
However these setbacks do not discourage the big shots of the global MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions) industry from going ahead with their very own plans in the coming months. Researchfive.com has reported the global MICE industry is anticipated to hit U$1,619.3 billion in the 2021–2028 period, growing from $1,007.2 billion in 2020 and representing a healthy 5.9% per year growth rate. Examples of upcoming events around the corner are:

  • The six month World Expo in Dubai will kick off on October 1st after the event had to be postponed last year due to the pandemic. Lasting until April 30 2022, Expo Dubai (slogan: Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”) expects 25 million visitors to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). But Dr. Nasser Saïdi, a leading Dubai-based economist has judged this projection as “ somewhat too optimistic” amid ongoing travel restrictions globally and prevailing uncertainty among travellers.
  • The global real state congress MIPM in Cannes has held its first post-pandemic gathering of property experts and architecture industry in early September.
  • Under the slogan “Reconnect and Rebuild” the international air transport body IATA invites industry pundit and delegates to the Global Airport, Passenger & Accessibility Symposium to Prague, Czech Republic from 15 – 18 November.
  • The World Travel Market (WTM) in London hopes to inject to the global tourism industry a booster shot by hosting the hotel chains, airliners, and tour operators, and country pavilions from 1-3 November at ExCeL Centre London.

Keep it clean
All events have one thing in common: they hope to bank on the FOMO (fear of missing out) effect. In order to keep events safe and sound, several measures have to be implemented and monitored:

  • Functioning electronic devices which guarantee a smooth entry for delegates with the required QR code to proof they are tested negatively or vaccinated (in France even dining in a café or restaurant currently requires the QR code).
  • Obligation to wear a mask which covers mouth and nose at all times.
  • Placing of hand sanitizers at entry and exit points as well at every booth, seating or stage.
  • Installation of thermal cameras at arrival points to check the temperature of visitors before entry to the site.
  • Physical distancing measures. At least 1 meter or better 1.5 meters of distance shall be kept between visitors and delegates encouraged by markings on the floor and by appropriate seating schemes. These distancing rules shall be monitored by security personnel.
  • Limiting the numbers of visitors per day by implementing a pre-registration scheme available on smart phones.
  • Assurance of appropriate medical and emergency facilities onsite.
  • Strict control of health pass or vaccination status, e. g. in France only visitors with a negative antigenic test or proof a double vaccination with an approved dose by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Astra-Zeneca, or Johnson and Johnson (vaccinations by Sputnik or Sinopharm are not accepted in France or any other EU country)
  • Strict distancing of chairs and tables at kiosks, coffee shops, or restaurants onsite.

Aside from these relatively known (and hopefully respected) measures, other initiatives are supportive to keep the spread of the tenacious Sars-COV-2 virus too. These implementations include the technological support in keeping the pandemic at bay.

  • Contactless payment terminals at entry gates, eateries, and booths (in case instant product sales are possible), and for food delivery boys and girls who walk around and sell drinks and sandwiches.
  • A dense cleaning scheme which ensures that door handles, handrails, and buttons are disinfected on a regular basis.
  • Automatic door opening systems shall be used in order to limit the need to open doors by hand.
  • Regular cleaning of eateries and hygienic facilities at the MICE venue.

While these additional instruments translate into a higher cost base for arenas and event managers, they are the grease towards a step by step comeback of the MICE industry. Word of mouth by happy delegates will raise the reputation of a congress or cultural happening and ultimately lead to more delegates, sponsors, business partners in the post-pandemic era.

Uphill struggle
Michael Rennschmied, CEO of global conference organizer coliseum-online.com, which does both virtual and physical conferences, said that he expects events in the late 2021 and early 2022 to benefit mostly from their domestic markets due to ongoing travel restrictions. Example: the UAE remains on the UK’s amber list of countries which means that a visitor from London to the Expo Dubai can visit the event but he or she must quarantine upon return for seven days which makes the trip rather unattractive.

“If you want a high number of delegates (if permitted) you need to intensively source the local market (same country),” Rennschmied told Nets Switzerland. He added: “The era for online events is not over yet, but in 2022 everyone should go back to live events. As of now, there are too many uncertainties in relation to travel restrictions and quarantine requirements. Events work more on a local basis at the moment and on a lower scale than pre-pandemic.” In fact, Event organizers reported that 23.6% of their events in 2021 will include a virtual component and will be smaller local events. They will have less than 25 attendees who do not need to travel by air or stay in hotel rooms, according to AMEX.

The World Tourism Organization has found that of the total 10 billion pre-pandemic travels, around 14% accounted for business travel. Bearing in mind that business travelling is about “the art of the deal” which creates investments, jobs, and opportunities, the imminent rebound of the MICE industry can function like a nudge effect for the world economy after Covid-19.

AHIC prepares for Dubai return

Events from around the world

September 17, 2021 – The Arabian & African Hospitality Investment Conference (AHIC) returns to Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai live in person from September 20-22, bringing together four powerful, active investment communities from across the region.

For the first time, AHIC 2021, organised by Bench and Meed, will house the four close-knit investment communities of the Arabian Hospitality Investment Conference (AHIC), Saudi Arabia Hospitality Investment Conference (SHIC), Africa Hotel Investment Forum (AHIF) and the Global Restaurant Investment Forum (GRIF) under one roof.

United by the theme ‘Rise Together,’ investors, owners, private equity firms, financiers, franchise owners, innovators, developers and government entities will meet to network, share insights and do business, with the potential for partnerships greater than ever.

Jonathan Worsley, chairman of Bench and founder of AHIC, says: “To be able to bring together these four major hospitality investment communities for the first time, at our first live, in person event for this sector in the Middle East and Africa post-pandemic, is truly special.

“We have created a robust buyer and seller platform teaming with opportunity and developed a unique programme inspired by the key themes of ‘innovation, sustainability and the future’.

“With less than a month until we kick-off AHIC 2021, we are now working closely with our moderators, speakers and sponsors to ensure we spark conversations that will help this resilient and innovative industry rise from this pandemic towards a bright, successful future.”

The AHIC 2021 programme combines on-stage one-to-one interviews, roundtables, discussions and workshops with innovation pitches, off-stage individual meetings and networking experiences.

AHIC Intelligence

Many of these sessions will be underpinned by AHIC Intelligence, with industry data, insights and predictions for the region’s pipeline, performance and profitability expected to be key.

On day one on September 20th, Robin Rossman, managing director, STR, will present some of the key learnings from the past 18 months.

Speaking ahead of AHIC, Rossmann says: “The pace and shape of hotel performance recovery continues to vary significantly around the world, dependant on vaccination rates as well as the spread of the Delta strain.

“In the Middle East and Africa, performance has also varied significantly based on some markets’ greater reliance on international travel and corporate demand.

“The markets able to generate more demand from domestic leisure sources are further ahead in the recovery process.”

He adds: “Looking ahead, the balance between domestic and international travel is set to change fundamentally as the industry transitions to the ‘new normal’ post-pandemic.

“Data shows the reality of current travel hesitancy contrasted by the significant pent-up demand that will emerge once Covid travel restrictions are eased.”

Meanwhile, Martin Berlin, partner and global deals real estate leader, PwC, will unveil exclusive research on the impact of Covid as a never-before-seen catalyst for innovation.

Berlin reveals that the pandemic has caused a loss of US$1.3 trillion in tourist receipts.

In a sneak preview of the data, he says: “International tourist arrivals declined by 74 per cent due to Covid in 2020, compared to only a decrease of four per cent after the financial crisis, while the global airline industry declined by more than half during Covid-19.

“This means that currently, 100-120 million jobs in the global tourism sector are at risk due to the pandemic.”

AHIC 2021 will explore how and when the industry can return to the status quo.

Meanwhile, Hala Matar Choufany, president, Middle East, Africa and south Asia for HVS, will launch the latest Valuation Index for the Middle East & Africa on day two.

In an exclusive preview of the report, Choufany says: “Hotel ownership and investment are considered as a long-term investment as the value is based on the future income that the asset is likely to generate, with valuers adopting the discounted cashflow method of valuation.

“As such, one year of minimal income does not mean the value of the asset has disappeared completely.

“The key will be the length of time it will take for the hotels/markets to recover and whether the recovery will surpass the previous levels of operation.”

She reveals: “Although there was a limited number of hotel transactions that took place in the MEA region during the last 18 months, the trading performance of hotels that remained opened or re-opened suggests that leisure and resort hotels have performed better than the corporate and commercial hotels.

“Specifically, cities that have better managed the pandemic and gradually re-opened their borders have registered lower decline in hotel values when compared to other cities.”

Saudi Focus

AHIC has already released its exclusive fourth annual AHIC Hotel Investment Forecast in partnership with Meed Projects.

According to this research, more than US $3.5 billion worth of new hotel projects in the GCC have been awarded over the past 18 months during the height of the pandemic, indicating that investors expect the market to return to normality in the next two to three years when the new projects are due to open.

Ed James, director of content and analysis at Meed Projects, says: “Longer-term, the industry is even more bullish, with US $27 billion worth of hotel investments in the pipeline.

“The majority of these are comprised of the ‘giga project’ tourism investments in Saudi Arabia led by the Red Sea Project, Neom, Amaala, Diriyah Gate and Al-Ula, to name but a few”.

These giga projects will have a major presence at AHIC 2021, with Jerry Inzerillo, group chief executive, Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA), kicking off the Saudi Day on day three, September 22nd, with a live-on-stage morning talk with Gloria Guevara Manzo, chief special advisor, ministry of tourism – kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

AHIC 2021 will also feature speakers from another of Saudi Arabia’s giga projects, Neom, with Andrew McEvoy, head of tourism sector, Neom, set to discuss the foundations of developing a future destination with sustainability at the core of investment.

Into Africa

AHIC 2021 will also feature several sessions focused on the African investment community, with an interactive debate moderated by Philippe Doizelet, director, hotels and real estate, Voltere by Egis, designed to analyse the concepts most ripe for investment based on the changing behaviour of consumers.

While Africa welcomed some 70 million tourists in 2019 according to UNWTO, following an average growth of about six per cent over the last five years, Doizelet says there are still barriers to entry, from visa policies to health requirements.

Therefore, sub regional tourism will stimulate the creation of tourism complexes and urban and peri-urban business and leisure centres that can become real destinations.

Doizelet predicts that over the next two decades, the following countries will emerge as the most credible regional players: Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal to the west; Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda in the east; and South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique to the south.

He says: “Finally, central Africa should rely rather on local demand and create opportunities for exclusive tourism clusters, particularly in Cameroon and Angola.

“From the above, it is clear that talking about African tourism in a global way makes little sense.

“National or sub-regional realities continue to prevail, thus reflecting the geographic, human, economic and political diversity of the continent.”

It is these realities that will be discussed in depth at AHIC, with leaders from this unique continent present to review the numbers and delve into the opportunity.

More Information

AHIC, now in its 17th year, is the annual gathering for the Middle East’s hospitality investment community organised by global hotel investment event organiser Bench in partnership with Middle East business intelligence brand, Meed.

AHIC creates a knowledge and networking platform for global and regional investors of all backgrounds, offering essential insights to investing in hotels, showcasing regional and international hospitality investment opportunities and facilitating direct connections with hospitality industry stakeholders.

Copenhagen Shares Details on Exhibition Centre Expansion

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Bella Arena will be the name of Copenhagen‘s new arena, which is being built as an extension of the Bella Centre Copenhagen, Scandinavia’s largest congress, conference and exhibition centre. With room for 7,000 seated guests in the new arena, Copenhagen can host even larger international events in the future. A focus on sustainability throughout the construction process and a partnership with Carlsberg gives Bella Arena a gold certification in sustainable construction.

Bellakvarter in Orestad is already a magnet for international events with Bella Centre Copenhagen and AC Hotel Bella Sky, which is only 10 minutes away from Copenhagen International Airport and directly connected to the rest of the city through Bella Centre Metro Station. Now, the area is being expanded with an arena with 150,000 square feet of flexible space, allowing the Bella Centre to accommodate 30,000 simultaneous guests in the future. The arena, Wonderful Copenhagen (the official tourism organization of the capital region of Denmark) said in an announcement, can provide completely new opportunities for Bella Centre and Copenhagen as hosts to global business and political conferences, as well as cultural and sporting events.

“In order to attract the largest international congresses, Copenhagen has historically lacked two things: Hotel capacity and a large column-free arena, where the main speaker could speak to 7,000 participants at the same time. The hotels have been added over the last few years, and now we are adding the arena which, together with the rest of Bella Centre, raises the bar for which events we can draw to the capital,” said Christian Folden Lund, CEO of BC Hospitality Group, in a written statement.

The new Bella Arena is connected to the existing Bella Centre via a large glass atrium, so that the arena, the hotel and Bella Centre are now under one roof and can accommodate events with up to 30,000 participants. Bella Arena also gets its own identities and entrances, so that it can be used for cultural events and sporting events at the same time as there are other conference events in Bella Centre.

“The crisis has certainly shown that the capital needs tourists, both holidaymakers, business travellers and those who come to experience special events,” said Mikkel Aaro-Hansen, CEO of Wonderful Copenhagen. “Before the crisis, travellers generated a total turnover of over 50 billion Danish krone (approximately $8 billion) in the capital. So, we have to restore the capital’s tourism—and we must do this through change, focus on sustainability and innovation. We have to create something new, because the competition is only getting tougher. Therefore, on behalf of the capital, I am happy that we can open Bella Arena, which together with Bella Centre makes Bellakvarter a new international hub for business tourism and events.”

Sustainable Construction

Sustainability and accountability are considered in all parts of the Bella Centre and associated hotels, according to Wonderful Copenhagen. Sustainable materials, energy efficiency and circularity have been key focus points, and this has led to Bella Arena achieving the international gold certification within sustainability from DGNB (the German Sustainable Building Council). In close partnership with BC Hospitality Group’s new beverage supplier, Carlsberg, upcycled beer kegs have been used in the process. The upcycled kegs are used together with recycled wood from the original Bella Centre at Bellahoj.

Carlsberg’s contribution to the arena is based on the brewery’s focus on circularity throughout the value chain. The latest innovation is the DraughtMaster-keg that in addition to ensuring better quality and use of the beer will be returned and recycled into new products such as furniture and building materials. In Bella Arena, the upcycled kegs are used for signs and furniture.

The 25 Best Cities in the World

blank

Travel news from around the world

What attracts travellers to certain cities around the world? Is it new Michelin-starred restaurants? Generations-old cultural heritage? Proximity to geographic wonders of the world? Unsurprisingly, when it comes to determining the best cities in the world, it’s all of the above for our discerning Travel + Leisure readers.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated cities on their sights and landmarks, culture, cuisine, friendliness, shopping, and overall value.

South Asia and Mexico had an impressive showing this year, with readers’ top 10 including three Mexican cities (including the No. 1 spot!) and four South Asian cities (across Laos, India, Indonesia, and Thailand). Udaipur, on India’s picturesque Lake Pichola, nabbed second place, up from last year, when it ranked No. 7. One reader described it as “enchanting,” while another raved that it’s “by far the most beautiful city in India.” The other Indian city to make the list was Jaipur (No. 17), often referred to as the Pink City because of the remarkable pink buildings that line its streets.

Also in South Asia, Chiang Mai (No. 9) beat out Bangkok (No. 10) by just a hair, with readers specifically describing Chiang Mai as “more laid-back” and “less crowded” than Bangkok. Many of our readers were lured to Chiang Mai by the elephant sanctuary, but stayed for the “amazing people with a deep love for their way of life and cultures,” as one respondent put it.

In Europe, we have nine World’s Best Award–winning cities this year, from two Turkey hot spots — Istanbul (No. 3) and Bodrum (No. 16) — to the culinary capital of Spain, San Sebastián (No. 15), to Kraków, Poland, at No. 12.

And coming in ahead of cities like Cape Town (No. 20) and Antigua Guatemala (No. 24) is the lone American city on our list this year: Charleston, South Carolina. Love for the charming Lowcountry destination runs deep with our T+L readers. It’s a nine-time winner for the best cities in the United States, and we had an unprecedented number of reader comments about this waterfront city known for its pastel façades and burgeoning arts scene. One reader says, “The charm of the city is its architecture,” while another praises the “bevy of interesting and delicious restaurants that can satisfy all tastes.”

Finally, we turn back to Mexico, which saw Mexico City and Oaxaca come in at No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. But it was San Miguel de Allende that once again took the No. 1 spot. Below, the reasons T+L readers voted for it, plus the full list of the best cities in the world for 2021.

1. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

A marriage of neo-Gothic and Spanish-colonial architecture, the city — located 170 miles northwest of Mexico City — is a design lover’s dream. “The mystery of what the houses look like behind the doors is intriguing,” said one reader. Described as simply “magical” by more than one respondent, San Miguel de Allende also captivated readers with its history and growing culinary clout. Our respondents also gushed over the plentiful sights — “everywhere you look there are amazing sights and beauty and history” — and remarked on how walkable and easy-to-navigate the city is. From the rooftop restaurants to the central El Jardín and the Museo Histórico, San Miguel de Allende has mesmerized our readers, one of whom summarized: “San Miguel is an incredible city, very beautiful, historic, with friendly people, fantastic food and restaurants.

ATTA survey highlights green shoots of recovery

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Bookings and enquiries about travel to Southern and East Africa remained strong in July, although postponements still dominated as the highest category of ‘enquiries’.

This is according to the latest African Travel & Tourism Association (ATTA) Snapshot Survey. Throughout 2021, ATTA has been taking a ‘snapshot’ at the end of each month from the perspective of accommodation providers, DMCs, tour operators and agents and private guides.

The survey provides an indication of what is happening within the broader African travel and tourism industry and focuses on, among others: Who is actually travelling each month? How are they booking? Where are they enquiring to go to? What are the lead times of bookings?

The survey is only sent to those within the ATTA membership and its greater industry network, spanning thousands of companies around the globe.

Here is the final summary of the report.

Arrivals

  • 87% of accommodation respondents were open, the highest percentage in 2021, whilst the majority occupancy levels remained low at 20-40%.
  • Fewer respondents had arrivals from international and trade channels, with local direct bookings remaining essential for occupancy.
  • DMCs experienced the highest percentage of travellers due to travel in July, who actually travelled (24%). This is the highest percentage all year and a marked increase from April (8%). July was the month with the lowest percentage (13%) of DMC respondents who indicated they had had no travellers to date, a huge decrease compared with February (52%).
  • The domestic market retained its strength in arrivals while international direct and trade channel arrivals reduced from June.
  • Nationalities of Arrivals: Domestic remains highest in number, Chile was mentioned for the first time and the US, Germany and France were the top international nationalities arriving.

Postponements

  • Postponements remained the highest category of ‘enquiries’ in July (46% of buyer respondents, 39% DMCs and 30% of suppliers), but expectation of these to travel are low. In contrast, confidence in the ability to travel is growing according to tour operator respondents (38% responding confident/confident but with all medical and insurance details).

Staffing

  • July showed an overall increase in people back at work, the highest of 2021.

 Enquiries and bookings

  • Enquiries remain strong across all parts of the chain.
  • 94% of suppliers, 90% of DMCs, 69% of buyers (Note, the buyers were specifically asked about enquiries to Africa as many sell outside of the continent.)
  • Tour operator conversion rates increased for the first time in 2021 with 27% of respondents converting 20-40% of enquiries.
  • USA, Germany and the UK provided the most enquiries to buyers and DMCs in July. Whilst the US, Germany and domestic markets provided the most enquiries to accommodation suppliers. This translated into bookings, with the exception of the UK.
  • DMC and tour operator pipelines hold a large percentage of postponements from 2020.

 Lead times

  • Short-term bookings remain most prevalent (81% of suppliers receiving bookings with departures up to two months in advance and 47% of buyer respondents receiving bookings with departures up to four months). A notable comment is that this is for both domestic and international as clients react to the changing travel restrictions.
  • Other individual comments outline that the appetite for bookings six to 12 months in advance is coming.

MICE News

ICCA, Global Meetings industry Association announced the launch of a new initiative – Net Zero Carbon Events – to connect the events industry globally to the rapidly growing movement towards net zero by 2050.

This initiative is hosted by the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC).

In November 2021, world leaders will meet in Glasgow, Scotland at COP26 to present how their countries will achieve the 50% reduction in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 in order to deliver on the Paris Agreement. In advance of this meeting, for profit and non-profit organizations from across all sectors are setting forth their own pathways towards this goal, and the ultimate goal of net zero by 2050.

Through this initiative, JMIC aims to link all stakeholders in the corporate, professional, academic and destination communities world-wide that have also committed to engagement in what is one of the biggest collective challenges we all face today, and to invite those that have not done so yet to join.

The Net Zero Carbon Events initiative aims to bring together a wide range of industry stakeholders to:

  • Jointly communicate our industry’s commitment to tackling climate change and driving towards net zero by 2050

  • Develop common methodologies for measuring the industry’s direct, indirect and supply chain greenhouse gas emissions

  • Construct an industry-wide roadmap towards net zero by 2050, and emissions reductions by 2030 in line with the Paris Agreement, with support and guidance on key issues

  • Foster collaboration with suppliers and customers to ensure alignment and common approaches

  • Establish common mechanisms for reporting progress and sharing best practice.

The new initiative arises from the work of an organizing task force initiated by JMIC members ICCA, AIPC and UFI joined by representatives of Emerald Expositions (US), ExCel (UK), Freeman (US), HKCEC (China), Informa (UK), Javits Center (US), MCI (Switzerland), Messe München (Germany), RX (UK) and Scottish Event Campus (UK) and it was born from a discussion with the UNFCCC secretariat — United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat — which is also supporting the initiative.

All interested parties are invited to join this journey at https://netzerocarbonevents.org. The aim is to grow this initiative that represents the events industry as a whole and provide a collaborative commitment all can act on.

James Rees, ICCA President: “ICCA is committed to driving sustainable development within the meetings industry and our global membership. We are proud to be a part of such an initiative which is becoming more important than ever and through collaborative effort with our JMIC partners, we look forward to playing a very active role in developing and implementing sustainable event strategies that are of the highest standards.”

Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit 2021

Africa’s Travel & Tourism Summit set to take off in September

The Department of Tourism and South African Tourism will host the first ever Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit, which is set to take place from 20th to 21st September 2021, coinciding with Tourism Month in South Africa.

Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit aims to be a catalyst for engagement on the current state of tourism on the African continent. Taking into account challenges facing the global tourism industry, Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit will, through various engagement sessions, gather the tourism sector to share insights and ideas to explore collaborative efforts that can lead to recovery.

With an array of issues currently facing the sector, Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit aims to attract African community delegates, African Tourism Ministers, industry Associations, Tourism Boards, Destination Marketing Organisations as well as various partners across the tourism value chain.

Some of the major topics for discussion at the Summit include aviation, innovation, technology, the health and safety protocols currently in place, as well as the continent’s positioning post the COVID-19 pandemic for the African continent.

SA Tourism’s Acting CEO, Sthembiso Dlamini, highlighted that the African continent is resilient and that this Summit is important as it will contribute towards picking up the momentum within the sector, as it works towards an inclusive recovery.

“The COVID-19 pandemic may have dealt tourism, both business and leisure tourism, a heavy blow, but we are now in the recovery phase, and a summit of this nature is critical in ensuring that we are aligned as a continent whilst reigniting the tourism industry,” says Dlamini.

The Summit will be hosted in a hybrid format, over a two-day period. Delegates will have the option of attending virtually, or at identified venues across South Africa, or at three additional locations on the rest of the African continent, pending COVID-19 lockdown regulations. All venues will have COVID-19 health and safety protocols in place.

“We have opted for the hybrid format in order for us, as a continent, to lead the way in demonstrating how tourism can be enjoyed safely whilst adhering to health protocols. It is important that we are diligent in reigniting the sector, as it contributes significantly to the African economy,” adds Dlamini.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Tourism as well as South African Tourism were not able to host the MICE-focused Meetings Africa and leisure-focused Africa’s Travel Indaba 2021 editions which usually take place in February and May annually.

While Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit should not be seen as a replacement, it does provide a platform to showcase the African continent’s leisure tourism offerings and business event capabilities.

“In the absence of Africa’s Travel Indaba in 2020 and 2021, Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit is an innovative initiative for promoting intra-Africa tourism and also for sharing insights into the “state of readiness” for South Africa and the rest Africa to welcome the world during and post-COVID-19 pandemic,” says Kwakye Donkor, Chief Executive Officer, Africa Tourism Partners.

“I commend South African Tourism and the South African National Convention Bureau, for once again, showing commitment and leadership in tourism promotion across the continent. It will be so great to meet traditional and emerging trade partners again during the Summit. Well done to Team South Africa Tourism! We look forward to a very fruitful Summit,” concluded Donkor.

The SA Tourism Acting CEO also emphasised that Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit will act as a think tank for the continent, creating a platform for Africa’s tourism leaders to create solutions for Africa and contribute to global solutions for the industry.

Committed to ongoing transformation and development of the South African tourism industry, Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit will feature a dedicated day to empower SMMEs in the sector on 19 September 2021, as a precursor to the two-day conference which takes place on 20th and 21st September 2021.

Open to delegates from all countries, this Summit is an invitation to the world to join in as the African continent not only gears itself for recovery, but also to share in the African story.

Registration for the Summit will open in the afternoon on Friday, 20th August 2021 and you can register on https://www.africatourismsummit.com/. Stay tuned to our social pages for more information on registration details.

Egypt’s ancient King Khufu’s Boat moved from Giza pyramids to new home

blank

CAIRO – King Khufu’s Boat, an ancient vessel that is the oldest and largest wooden boat discovered in Egypt, has been painstakingly moved from its longstanding home next to the Giza pyramids to a nearby giant museum, officials said.

The 4 600-year-old vessel, also known as the Solar Boat, was moved to the nearby Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), due to be inaugurated later in 2021.

“The aim of the transportation project is to protect and preserve the biggest and oldest organic artefact made of wood in the history of humanity for the future generations,” the tourism and antiquities ministry said in a statement.

It took 48 hours to transport the cedarwood boat, which is 42 metres long and weighs 20 tons, to its new home. It arrived at the GEM in the early hours of Saturday, the ministry said.

The boat was transported as a single piece inside a metal cage carried on a remote-controlled vehicle imported especially for the operation, said Atef Moftah, supervisor general of the GEM project.

The vessel, discovered in 1954 at the southern corner of the Great Pyramid, has been exhibited for decades at a museum bearing its name at Giza Plateau.

Egypt says the Grand Egyptian Museum, which has been under construction intermittently for 17 years, will contain more than 100 000 artefacts when it opens.

Africa’s second-tallest skyscraper

Deal signed to construct Africa’s second-tallest skyscraper

Zanzibar is set to build Africa’s second-tallest skyscraper and what will be the continent’s largest hotel.

According to a number of news reports, Zanzibar has inked a deal for a major development that will see the construction of Africa’s second-tallest skyscraper and the largest hotel built at a cost of $1.3 billion.

The Zanzibar Domino Commercial Tower project will be home to a man-made island and come complete with a marina where cruise ships and yachts can dock.

In addition, the development will have several luxury hotels, resorts, apartments, a golf course and a wedding chapel.

The project is a joint venture between AICL Group in Tanzania and Crowland Management. A contract has been signed with architect xCassia, which has been tasked with the design of what will be the tallest building in East, Central and Southern Africa.

Zanzibar’s Minister of State in the President’s Office, Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga was quoted as saying that the project was a major step towards building the island nation’s blue economy.

“Its implementation supports the government’s efforts in inviting more local and foreign investors to the isles,” he said.

The estimated timeline for the project’s completion date is in four years. When complete, the tower will be 300m, surpassing the 228m Leonardo development in Sandton. South Africa. It will be rivalled by the Iconic Tower in Cairo, Egypt, which is expected to stretch into the sky at a height of 385m when complete in 2022.

Inspired design

The entire development has been planned over three sites that will be linked by both high and low bridge structures. The Arrivals Plaza, Zanzibar Domino and Island Resort will reportedly each have unique identities.

Guests will enter the property from the Arrivals Plaza. The Zanzibar Domino Bridge will form the backbone of all transport and services.

The Zanzibar Domino will be located 1.5km off the island’s main road, radiating out 250m to incorporate the marina.

The tower itself will comprise 560 apartments across two residences while five and six-star hotel apartments will add another 360 rooms. The resorts and wedding chapel will be accessible privately by helicopter, boat or bridge.

SAA 2.0 to start flying in September 2021

blank

blank

South African Airways will resume flights on 23 September, more than 15 months after it was grounded by Covid-19 and business rescue.

The national carrier said that voyager bookings and travel credit voucher redemption will be available from 6 September 2021. The airline will initially operate flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Accra, Kinshasa, Harare, Lusaka and Maputo.

More destinations will be added to the route network as it ramps up operations in response to market conditions.

“After months of diligent work, we are delighted that SAA is resuming service and we look forward to welcoming on board our loyal passengers and flying the South African flag. We continue to be a safe carrier and adhering to Covid-19 protocols,” said interim chief executive Thomas Kgokolo.

“There is a profound feeling of enthusiasm within Team SAA as we prepare for takeoff, with one common purpose – to rebuild and sustain a profitable airline that once again takes a leadership role among local, continental, and international airlines.”

Kgokolo said that aviation sector is going through a testing period, and SAA is aware of the tough challenges that lie ahead in the coming weeks.

“As we are now poised for takeoff, we see this as a major milestone for SAA and the country.”

SAA has failed to make a profit for almost a decade, surviving on state bailouts and government debt guarantees, while it was placed under administration a year ago.

The carrier has been lying dormant since March 2020, when the fleet was grounded due to travel bans to contain the Covid-19 coronavirus.

In June 2021, the government agreed to sell a majority stake in the carrier to a local jet-leasing company and private-equity firm.

A consortium comprised of Johannesburg-based Global Airways, which owns recently launched domestic airline Lift, and private-equity firm Harith General Partners will take a 51% shareholding in South African Airways.

The group, Takatso, will invest as much as R3.5 billion over the next three years, Lift co-founder Gidon Novick and Harith chief executive officer Tshepo Mahloele said.

“Government will have no further financial obligations to the company, outside of the existing liabilities that they will settle,” Novick said. “Route networks we are still working on, and it will be a phased rollout based on demand re-emerging post-Covid.”

Thanda Island, Tanzania – new mermaid will help build up reefs

blank

blank

Thanda Island, off the Indian Ocean coast of Tanzania, has introduced an underwater mermaid sculpture that doubles as a tool in the private island’s ongoing marine conservation work, which includes growing and preserving the vulnerable coral reef that surrounds the island.

Created by Antigone Meda, island manager and “Head of Magic” at Thanda Island, the bigger-than-life-size concrete sculpture contributes to an expanding artificial reef that is part of an coral nursery beneath the waves of the Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve about 5 minutes by boat from the resort.

The piece is also the first of many mermaid sculptures that Meda intends to create to symbolize “the wonderful women that work on the Thanda Island team.” Made from environment-friendly concrete and cast in fiberglass molds, the sculpture is named “Rianne” for resident marine biologist Rianne Laan, who created the coral nursery in 2018.

Meda, who joined Thanda Island in 2016 and became island manager two years later, drew inspiration for the sculpture from the underwater artwork of British artist Jason Taylor. She only works on mermaid sculptures at night after her work is over, she said, “so this one took about two years. It was worth it — this was a dream project.”

It’s time to explore the charming villages, stunning beaches, and vibrant cities around the world and open your heart to new challenges, experiences, and people. Here is a list of 10 inspiring travel destinations to visit in 2022.

1. New York, USA
There are many reasons to love the New York lifestyle. Think of incredible architectural treasures and attractions, such as Central Park and the Statue of Liberty. New York, the most populous city in the United States, speaks all languages and is suitable for everyone. The city boasts the best international art fairs, fine art exhibitions, numerous art museums, and world-known artists. The fascinating nightlife scene of the Big Apple is also something that you will love at first sight.

2. Scandinavia
You should visit Scandinavia at least because of a number of amazing phenomena created by Mother Nature. You may experience the Midnight Sun, the Polar nights, and the Northern Lights. If you are in the mood for Scandinavian city life, you may feel the metropolitan atmosphere combined with tradition in Scandinavia’s capitals: Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, and Reykjavik. In the warm summer months, check out annual holidays, festivals, and other countless outdoor events happening there quite often.

3. Russia
Russia is undeniably one of the most fascinating destinations to explore on a tour. The country offers the vastness of the diverse landscape. You can discover the beautiful nature of Kamchatka, spot polar bears up in the Arctic Circle, and climb the Altai Mountains. One of the popular tourist routes in Russia is the Golden Ring that includes Rostov Veliky, Vladimir, Sergiev Posad, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Suzdal, Pereslavl-Zalessky, and a few small towns. There are plenty of museums, including unusual thematic museums. Besides, it is worth visiting Russian Orthodox churches, as they are a big part of Russian traditions and history. Try your best to comprehend antique Orthodox icons that are a wonderful example of Russian culture.

4. Japan
If you want to feel an effortless blend of the past and present, head for Japan. You will find centuries-old Shinto shrines and calm rock gardens beyond the glassy hotels and modern shopping complexes. Visit some of the many impressive castles and temples around the country. There is a wide range of travel options including subway, train, and bus services to choose from. You will be impressed by the sparkling clean streets and absolutely spotless hotels and restaurants filled with pleasant smells.

5. Greece
Greece is famous for its pristine islands capped with whitewashed buildings. You should visit the Athens Acropolis and climb up to the towering monasteries of Meteora to soak up thousands of years of history. Land on one of Greece’s six thousand islands to unwind, relax, and enjoy yourself in crowd-free villages. Hike volcanoes, explore forests, and taste olives. Venture Greece’s perfect turquoise waters by sailboat. If you are not into extreme sports, you may admire the breath-taking views from the shores of one of the many Greek beaches.

6. Turkey
Turkey attracts people with tall mountains, small idyllic villages, crystal clear waters, and the ruins of ancient empires. Try famous Turkish cuisine that is much more than just baklava and kebab. It is a whole world of desserts, vegetable dishes, huge breakfast spreads, fresh seafood, meze, and more. Antalya, Fethiye, Izmir, and Bodrum boast the most beautiful beaches in Turkey. You may take a special cruise to experience the Mediterranean or Aegean Coast. Fans of being scrubbed, washed, and massaged should try the hamam that is a truly spectacular way to unwind.

7. Croatia
Croatia is a wonderful place with picturesque ports, hundreds of islands, beautiful cultural cities, stunning nature, and over 2,500 hours of sun per year. It is easy enough to reach Croatia comparing to traveling to the Canaries or the majority of the Greek Islands, which is especially important if you are traveling with tiny tots. To run away from the crowds of sunbathing tourists (those are more than enough, as Croatia is famed for its scenic pebbled beaches), rent a boat to enjoy Stiniva Bay. There are also many tours for fans of Game of Thrones. You can visit Trsteno Arboretum (the Garden of Red Keep), Dubrovnik City Walls (King’s Landing City Walls), the Fortress of Kliss (the City of Meereen), and other filming locations.

8. South Africa
Paragliding off of a mountain over a capital city, going Shark Cage Diving, and blokarting down by the beach are just some of South Africa experiences that will spice your life up a bit. You can also go on a safari to see some of the magnificent animals. If you are lucky enough, you can even see penguins right on the beach. The country is also known for its wineries and vineyards, so do not miss the opportunity to take a specialized tour to enjoy tasting menus and, of course, purchase a few bottles of fabulous wine.

9. Italy
From the Colosseum to St. Peter’s Square, ancient history and culture are everywhere in Italy. Visit famous museums to enjoy some of the world’s greatest works of art. For fans of pasta, there are fresh markets and local villas around every turn. Don’t forget about Italian wine that goes perfectly with the food! You should also take some time to explore Italian natural landscapes and the mountains.

10. France
Paris is the city of love, so if you are going to propose, a great idea is to do it in front of the Eiffel Tower. If you choose Chamonix, Val D’Isere, or Courchevel, try the French favorite activity après-ski. Head to the Cannes Film Festival for celebrities spotting or grab your bucket and spade and check out the French Riviera. There is a beach for everyone, from Hyères with the famous Plage de l’Almanarre to Nice.

Choose your next getaway to get yourself excited about traveling again! You deserve it!

60th ICCA Congress – transformed business events industry – Colombia

blank

Travel Event

blank

The 60th Annual ICCA Congress will take the global association meetings industry to Cartagena, Colombia on 24-27 October 2021 with the theme Forward to our Future. The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Annual Congress is a must-attend event for all involved in international conventions and congresses and this year’s hybrid experience is no different. Delegates are invited to join the Congress in the host city of Cartagena de Indias, a Congress Hub, or on ICCA’s state-of-the-art virtual platform. Registration for the ICCA Congress 2021 is flexible, so delegates can change how they participate at any time.

Setting the stage for future business events
Last year’s ICCA Congress established the Kaohsiung Protocol, a crowdsourced  framework identifying major trends and key strategies to enable the international meetings industry to thrive despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The ICCA Congress 2021 will continue the industry’s collaborative approach to overcoming challenges and reinventing business operations. The innovative programme combines best practices for pandemic-safe meetings with the latest research into the future outlook of business events.

“ICCA research has consistently found that the general sentiment about the need for face-to-face events has not only remained, but intensified. Furthermore, while digital and hybrid events have expanded audiences for many organisations, these alternatives cannot supersede the serendipitous moments and truly meaningful connections that are the essence of face-to-face meetings,” said ICCA CEO Senthil Gopinath.

“We’ve been listening closely to the motivations and desires of both our ICCA World and Association Community members. As a result, the ICCA Congress 2021 is an event that we are proud to say has been developed for our members, by our members. Delegates will get first-hand experience with the creative, future-forward strategies that will become standard operations for the successful business events of tomorrow.”

Global community connects in Cartagena
ICCA World is a strong advocate for returning to face-to-face meetings, with both safety and financial efficiency as top priorities. Before the pandemic, business events contributed USD 1.5 trillion to the global GDP and affected nearly 26 million jobs worldwide.

“The economic impact of international business events cannot be overstated,” said Gopinath. “In-person meetings are vital to economic development, local job creation, and knowledge exchange. We are very pleased to be able to bring the 60th ICCA Congress to Cartagena, Colombia as a live event.”

Diana M. Rodriguez, CMP, Cartagena de Indias Convention Center, said: “We are convinced that face-to-face meetings and events drive socio-economic development for destinations. They serve as platforms for knowledge sharing and generating valuable connections that positively impact businesses and professionals alike, well beyond the event itself. That’s why we are ready to welcome ICCA delegates in Cartagena de Indias; to rediscover the true power of meeting again under the magic spell of our legendary and ‘heroic’ city.”

ICCA Congress 2021 delegates who are unable to travel to Colombia will also have the opportunity to meet face-to-face at one of the worldwide Congress Hubs. Confirmed destinations as of the date of this announcement are: Paris, France; Johannesburg, South Africa; and Seoul, South Korea. Congress Hub programmes will livestream key plenary sessions that take place in Cartagena. Delegates will also hear from industry experts and government officials with strong ties to their region and participate in immersive workshops. Each Hub will be infused with the Cartagena experience through themed dinners and social events that deliver a Colombian flair.

Delegates who join the ICCA Congress 2021 digitally will have access to cutting-edge event tech. The virtual platform is as functional as it is impressive. The customised, visual wow-factor will keep delegates plugged-in and maximise their overall event participation. Meanwhile, powerful technology will ensure that the learning and networking components are smoothly executed and impactful.

“No matter where our delegates are, they can fully engage with the Congress programme. They’ll make valuable and profound connections and feel immersed in the event,” said Gopinath. “The future of the international meetings industry is here and we will bring it to the world stage during the ICCA Congress 2021.”
