New Urban Hotel opens organic farm with Michelin-Starred Chef

January 14 2022 – New Urban Hotel opens organic farm with Michelin-Starred Chef

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND – Meliá Chiang Mai, a 260-key hotel to soon debut in Thailand’s mountainous north, has embraced the ‘farm to table’ social movement by establishing a farm to harvest produce for its restaurants, bars and spa.

The hotel, due to open on April 8 on Charoen Prathet Road in the heart of Chiang Mai, has partnered with ORI9IN The Gourmet Farm, a 198-acre gourmet organic farm located in nearby San Sai District overseen by two-star Michelin Chef turned sustainable farmer James Noble and his wife May.

Noble, a Briton who has run Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK, will work with local farmers to grow an array of fruits, vegetables and herbs for the hotel on its own two-acre farm on the broader ORI9IN property.

In addition to local seasonal produce such as young morning glory, red basil, lemongrass and passion fruit, the farm will also grow various kinds of tomatoes, salad leaves, and specialized ingredients such as padrón pepper that would otherwise need to be imported from Spain for the hotel’s authentic Mediterranean cuisine.

The partnership is a central plank of Meliá Chiang Mai’s ‘360° Cuisine’ program, under which the hotel aims to work closely with local farmers to help them improve sustainability and encourage ethical production to make communities and the overall food system more resilient.

The 360° Cuisine program not only gives guests peace of mind about where their food comes from but encourages them to visit the hotel’s farm to meet local farmers and learn more about sustainable farming and healthier eating.

Championing local procurement and sustainably sourced food, ORI9IN is the only farming operation globally that partners with a network of restaurants and hotels to focus on import substitution and reducing its carbon footprint without sacrificing flavour.

The hotel’s menus will highlight appetizers, main courses and desserts that feature ingredients from the farm. Example dishes include ‘Salmorejo con Tomate Triturado’ (fresh chilled tomato soup), ‘Fattoush Salad’ and ‘Fruta de Temporada’ (seasonal fruit platter). Ingredients from the farm will also be in various beverages at the hotel’s bars and Meliá’s signature YHI Spa.

In addition to pursuing ‘farm to plate’ by sourcing organic produce that travels only a short distance to our hotel, our partnership with ORI9IN also comprises ‘plate to farm’ where we separate our food waste and bring it back to the farm as compost, thus minimizing waste as part of a truly 360° concept,” said Meliá Chiang Mai’s general manager Edward E. Snoeks.

The hotel will offer guests day trips to the farm that include a picnic lunch and a chance to learn more “about the journey their food and these products have made, as well as who has been a part of that journey”, said Noble.

People often don’t know where food comes from, so we show them, albeit underscored by our passion for locally grown, sustainable ingredients,” he said. “This is also tourism that leaves no footprint on the land; we’re trying to show people that you can have a day out without harming what you came to see in the first place.”

Drawing on Meliá’s Spanish origins and celebrating Spain’s famed gastronomy, Meliá Chiang Mai’s dining landscape will feature restaurants Mai Restaurant and Bar and Laan Na Kitchen, bars Mai The Sky Bar and Tien Pool Bar, and lounges Ruen Kaew and The Level Lounge.

Dubai’s Hottest Luxury Hotel In 2022

Dubai’s Hottest Luxury Hotel In 2022

January 14 2022 – Dubai’s Hottest Luxury Hotel In 2022.

Dubai’s skyline gets even more star-studded as Dorchester Collection brings its sophistication to the Emirates with the latest luxury hotel, The Lana.

Standing out amidst a dense grove of glossy skyscrapers of Dubai will be Dorchester Collections’s ‘The Lana’, a new luxury hotel that will overlook the Business Bay Area and set to be the epitome of ultra-luxury in Downtown Dubai. The Lana will open its doors to travellers during the tail end of 2022, just in time for the New Year celebrations.

The word “Lana” in Arabic translates to “for us” and in Hawaiian to “floating gently in calm water”, therefore evoking the sense of serenity and generosity. It also stands as a metaphor for the collaboration between the Dorchester Collections and OMNIYAT, the real estate development group behind this project.

The architects Foster + Partners have envisioned this building keeping in mind the ever-changing and constantly rebuilding Dubai skyline. The hotel will be a landmark destination, with a contemporary building outline that will complement the calm waters of the Dubai Creek and create an ambience that invokes a sense of fluidity and calm.

Situated at a prime location, right in the middle of the Burj Khalifa district with the Dubai International Airport a mere 20 minutes away, the hotel provides stunning views of the deserts and the majestic Burj Khalifa.

The hotel has 225 unique guest rooms, out of which 69 are suites. These rooms are spacious and flooded with lights, courtesy of the floor to ceiling windows and cool interiors. Much like the architecture, the interiors are also modern, with a subtle blend of the traditional.

The interiors are done by the Parisian duo, Gilles & Boissier, including intricate details like stone parquet flooring, triple-height ceilings, and screen dividers that create an ambience that is at once welcoming discreet. Dark marble, rounded furniture, and soft hues of gold, beige, and olive are seen throughout the living spaces. A significant attribute of these larger than life rooms are the deep-soaking bathtubs, some of which will be positioned in the windows, affording occupants superb city views while they relax.

The 21 signature suites at The Lana are a lavish affair, as can be expected from Dorchester. The 333 m2 Presidential Suite is regal and residential, with a great view of the expansive property’s greenery. With abundant features such as two sitting rooms for entertaining, a garden room, dining room, and expansive private terrace that runs the length of the elevation, guests will feel right at home and bask in the comfort that is very carefully crafted in the details. The Royal Suite has a noteworthy 357 m2 of indoor and outdoor living space and two bedrooms wrapping around the north corner of the building.

Dorchester Collection’s ‘The Lana’ Highlight – Rooftop Pool & Cabanas, After Hours Lounge Partie

The hotel will be an exemplary culinary destination in Dubai, with a modern Mediterranean restaurant on the fourth floor that offers indoors and outdoors dining and private dining space. The floor will also be host to an Italian café, with indoor and outdoor seating. The Lana’s signature restaurant and lounge, along with a traditional patisserie, can be found on the hotel’s 18th floor, and guests can expect an experiential dining experience unlike anything else in Dubai.

The 29th floor will host the hotel’s spa, a wellness centre, and an up-to-date gym. In addition, the hotel’s rooftop pool on the 30th floor will be available only during the day to hotel guests and features a cabana service. It promptly transforms itself into a lounge at night and becomes host to some of Dubai’s hottest rooftop parties.

With the Dorchester motto of “Anything but Ordinary” for the service it provides and with an extraordinary legacy of celebrating only the excellent and the exceptional, The Lana Hotel is another feather in the cap of the Dorchester Collections.

France reopen British

france to open British

January 13 2022 – Officials in France have confirmed the country will relax restrictions on those travelling from the UK from Friday.

France to reopen to British travellers tomorrow

Travellers vaccinated against Covid-19 will no longer need a compelling reason to enter France or self-isolate when they arrive.

However a negative Covid-19 test, taken 24 hours before leaving the UK, will be required, vaccinated or not.

France brought in the restrictions on December 18th in an attempt to slow the spread of the Omicron variant.

However, the country is still battling a surge in Covid-19 infections.

On Thursday, there were a record 368, 817 new cases and 341 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Non-vaccinated travellers will still need a compelling reason to enter France, and must still isolate for ten days upon arrival.

The decision comes as IATA questions whether border closures have any impact on slowing the spread of Covid-19.

Following confirmation of the decision, Julia Simpson, WTTC chief executive, said: “We welcome the reopening of French borders to UK travellers.

“Once a variant is endemic closing borders is pointless and only damages livelihoods especially in travel and tourism one of the hardest hit sectors during the pandemic.

“France is one of the biggest markets for UK tourists who, according to our 2021 Economic Impact Report, account for 14 per cent of overseas visitors.”

WTTC figures show total international visitor spend in France was worth more than €60 billion, pre-pandemic.

At the same time, data analysts Cirium released figures showing there are 2,179 flights scheduled between France and the UK in January this year, offering to 367,164 seats.

The figure is up 144 per cent on last year, but still down by two thirds on the figures seen in January 2019.

The busiest route in terms of flights is between London Heathrow and Charles De Galle in Parris, with 424 trips planned this month.

Eurostar also welcomed the reopening of the border.

A statement said: “We welcome the safe reduction of travel restrictions which will allow our customers to travel more freely between the UK and France.

“We are ready to welcome more passengers on board and will continue to increase the frequency of our services in the coming weeks to offer passengers more flexibility and choice.”

January 13 2022 -Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has unveiled plans for Norwegian Viva, the next ship in the Prima Class.

Norwegian Cruise Line reveals Norwegian Viva

Providing guests with “elevated experiences” including more wide-open spaces, thoughtful design and service, the ship will begin sailing Mediterranean itineraries in June next year.

She will be homeporting in southern European port cities including Lisbon, Portugal; Venice (Trieste) and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy; and Athens (Piraeus), Greece.

Norwegian Viva will then sail the southern Caribbean for her 2023-2024 winter season, offering warm-weather getaways from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Similarly to sister ship Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Viva will be built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in Marghera, Italy.

She will debut at 965 feet long, 142,500 gross tons and accommodate 3,219 guests at double occupancy.

Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line, said: “Norwegian Viva sets the standard in the premium segment, illustrating our commitment to pushing boundaries in four main areas: wide open space, service that puts guests first, thoughtful design and experiences beyond expectation.

“We have taken everything our guests love to the next level with this brand-new class of ships designed with them in mind.”

Norwegian Viva will boast eye-catching hull art designed by Italian graffiti and sculpture artist Manuel Di Rita, commonly known as “Peeta,” who also illustrated the exceptional hull design on Norwegian Prima.

“Norwegian Viva, the second of six Prima Class vessels being built with us, reinforces the great collaboration between Norwegian Cruise Line and Fincantieri,” said Luigi Matarazzo, general manager, merchant ships division, at Fincantieri.

“We were extremely satisfied that Norwegian Prima, the first of the new class, earned record-breaking bookings and we are excited to see how Norwegian Viva will live up to her sister ship.

“As we proved our resilience during these challenging times, this announcement represents another testament to Fincantieri´s global leadership role in the cruise sector.”

New Thailand pass system

January 13 2022 – New Thailand pass system

The president of the Phuket Tourism Association Bhummikitti Ruktaengam said that the island is becoming popular with foreign tourists, receiving 4,000 applications each day through the Thailand Pass system. Ruktaengam said that most of those visitors are from Germany, Russia, Kazakhstan, the United Kingdom, the United States and France.

Ruktaengam praised the success of the island’s Covid-19 measures for motivating among foreign tourists.

70% – 80% of international arrivals who test positive are infected with the Omicron variant, according to Bhummikitti. However, 90% of cases only exhibit mild symptoms.

Bhummikitti said that the authorities are also coming up with other facilities if hotels do not have isolation rooms for infected guests. These could be hospitals or the newly-created Traveler Community Isolation wards. Phuket will open 3 new TCI facilities for housing infected tourists, if their hotels do not have isolation rooms.

126 out of 480 Phuket hotels have registered to offer hotel room isolation, allocating a number of rooms for self-isolating infected guests exhibiting mild symptoms. The island now has 650 such rooms.

Amazing Jordan/Israel

Israel’s hotel sector optimistic about 2022

Israel’s hotel sector optimistic about 2022

January 13 2022 – Israel’s hotel sector optimistic about 2022.

After two years of low occupancy rates due to the corona pandemic, industry leaders in Israel’s hotel sector are optimistic that the new year will bring about a reversal of fortune.

Hotel construction is at a five-year high, the Real Estate Appraisers Association in Israel revealed earlier this week in a report based on data taken from the country’s Central Bureau of Statistics.

According to the report, in the first three-quarters of 2021 hotel construction began on roughly 1.5 million square feet of real estate, compared with 505,000 square feet a year earlier.

The majority of the new construction is taking place in Tel Aviv. Hotels in the coastal city, heavily reliant on incoming tourism, have been among the hardest hit by corona travel restrictions.
Despite these hardships, Nahum Kara, director of sales and marketing at the Isrotel hotel chain, believes that tourists will return in the coming year in even greater numbers than pre-pandemic times, especially given that Israel has reopened its borders once more.

To build up real tourism it takes approximately six months, said Kara. This is for group business [travellers]. Individual tourists are more adventurous and they do come earlier.

Let’s hope that we’ll continue to open the borders and by Passover this year we’ll be full again.

The Isrotel hotel chain, which currently owns 20 establishments across the country, is investing $1 billion, or NIS 3 billion, for the purchase or construction of 12 additional hotels in Israel over the next five years, including eight in Tel Aviv alone.

In 2022, Isrotel plans to open three new hotels: one near Lake Kinneret (the Sea of Galilee) called the Goma Hotel, and two others in Tel Aviv called the Port Tower Hotel and the Alberto Hotel.

The first one is at the entrance of the Tel Aviv Port, which is the entertainment area of the city, and the second one is in the business center of Tel Aviv. It’s a boutique hotel with 92 rooms and a rooftop swimming pool.

Kara and others in the hotel industry are hoping for a strong recovery from tourism, which they believe is inevitable once the pandemic situation improves.

In 2019, a record-breaking 4.5 million people visited the Holy Land.

Hotels that are reliant on incoming tourism, like the five-star, Isrotel-owned Royal Beach Hotel in Tel Aviv, have been particularly affected by corona. Nevertheless, according to Kara, the hotel chain has emerged relatively unscathed thanks to its diverse property portfolio. Once Isrotel launches its eight hotels in Tel Aviv, it will own 20% of all the guest rooms in the city.

The decision to build several new hotels was taken several years ago. To build a hotel in this country, from the time you decide to build it, takes between four and 10 years, Kara said. So the decisions were taken well in advance.

Others in the hotel sector are also confident about the future.

The Margoa Hotel, a boutique three-star hotel in the nearby coastal city of Netanya, is preparing for rooms to fill up come April.

While real-estate companies continue to bank on a strong recovery in the hotel sector, whether bookings return to pre-pandemic levels this year will only become clear in the months to come.

International Travel Expected to Jump After Europe Relaxes Restrictions

International Travel Expected to Jump After Europe Relaxes Restrictions

January 12 2022 – International Travel Expected to Jump After Europe Relaxes Restrictions

Some industry executives are predicting international travel will reach 90 percent of its pre-pandemic level now that the United Kingdom has relaxed some of its COVID-19 restrictions.

“I predict travel will be 90 percent back to 2019 levels before the end of spring (2022),” Derek Jones, the chief executive of luxury travel company Kuoni, told the Belfast Telegraph via the European travel site schengenvisainfo.com. “We’re already seeing increased call volumes and inquiries about trips for the year ahead as confidence builds.”

International travel has been the slowest part of the industry to come back from the pandemic, which hit worldwide almost two years ago next month.

England changed some of its rules on travel last week. Fully vaccinated travelers and children under the age of 18 no longer have to take a pre-departure COVID test when they come back to the U.K. A new, cheaper test is now valid to re-enter the country.

That will allow more people in Great Britain to travel, says Steve Heapy, the CEO of Jet2 – Britain’s third-largest airline – and Jet2 Holidays.

“We have seen an immediate and dramatic spike in bookings, with volumes since the Government announcement heading towards pre-pandemic levels,” Heapy said. He added that it “demonstrates just how much demand is out there among people wanting to get away for a much-needed holiday.”

A survey by British travel trade company Abta found that Spain, the United States, France, Italy and Greece are the top five destinations that U.K. residents plan to visit this year.

A spokesperson for travel agency TUI said there has been a “prompt increase” in bookings since last week. But any uptick just might be a one-way thing, because advisors in the U.S. aren’t seeing the same kind of optimism for international travel.

“I have not, and am not, seeing an increase in international travel. I do have a few trips in the works, which may or may not travel, but this is nothing to what I was doing in 2019 or were booked for 2020 prior to Covid. Not even close,” said Miki Taylor, founder and CEO of Taylor & Co. Travel in Marietta, Ga.. “My largest VIP client has two international trips rescheduled from 2020 and 2021 and those are still up in the air and they are all vaccinated and boosted and have all had Covid.”

Taylor said her current impression is that international travel has become a matter of anticipation and anxiety.

“I think that people want to travel, but the biggest concern I am hearing is ‘I don’t want to travel somewhere and then test positive and can’t get back.’ It is a worry and one that people aren’t willing to take just yet,” she said. “My personal opinion is that if we don’t have another Omicron, bookings might pick up for late in the year. But for now most are traveling to the Caribbean and Mexico, but that isn’t even anywhere close to where it was pre-Covid.”

Disney looks to metaverse for more immersive experiences

Disney looks to metaverse for more immersive experiences

January 12 2022 – Disney looks to metaverse for more immersive experiences

Disney Enterprises has had a patent approved for a “virtual world simulator” by the United States Patent Office, signalling a metaverse move for its theme parks.

The technology would include a projection device as well as tracking system enabling Disney to display virtual effects on to a real-world venue as a user, e.g. theme park visitor, moves about.

A computing platform communicates with the projection device and tracking system in the background to map the venue and identify the virtual effects to display.

The patent document provides background around the ability of augmented reality to provide users with the feeling of engaging with a virtual world to provide a more immersive and engaging experience.

It goes on to describe some of the limitations of AR such as the cost of devices, the health and hygiene implications of sharing devices and the need for the use of personal AR-enabled devices which precludes many people from enjoying the same experience.

The document concludes that there is a need for something that enables an immersive experience for many uses but tailored to the vantage point of each user.

In its fourth quarter and full-year 2021 results, Disney talked of using the power of its platform and “new technologies to give consumers the best entertainment experience possible.”

CEO Bob Chapek said: “ Our company is truly unique in that we have a significant presence in the physical world through our parks and resorts, as well as media and entertainment assets in the digital world.

“And it is incredible to see how our use of emerging technology and insights gained through our innumerable consumer touchpoints is enabling us to transform the way people interact with and experience our stories and products in both worlds.”

He described development so far as “merely a prologue to a time when we’ll be able to connect the physical and digital worlds even more closely, allowing for storytelling without boundaries in our own Disney metaverse.”

Few travel brands have showed their cards when its comes to the metaverse so far.

Marriott International said it was tapping digital artists to create travel-inspired non-fungible tokens in December as part of its move into the “digital goods space.”

According to a statement, the company plans to continue building a presence in the metaverse in 2022.

Meanwhile, a mixed reality lounge called MetaTerrace has been opened in the Central Park Towers in Dubai’s financial district.

Cryptocurrency specialist ColossalBit is behind the move, which features a virtual-reality room, and says it’s a convergence of the physical and virtual worlds.

Study finds tourists seeking new destinations & experiences in 2022

January 12 2022 – Study finds tourists seeking new destinations & experiences in 2022

Travelers are looking for something new as they head out on the road once more, many after two years of travel restrictions.

Research from Tripadvisor, in conjunction with Ipsos Mori, reveals more than a third of travelers across the U.S., U.K, Australia, Japan and Singapore say traveling to a destination they have not previously visited is more important now than before.

The percentages rise to almost half, 49% for travelers from Singapore and 46% for travelers in Australia and 41% for those in the U.S.

Travelers also said the top three most important factors in future plans were to have new experiences, learn about history and culture and “get immersive” by seeing new places.

The Tripadvisor Travel in 2022: A Look Ahead research goes on to reveal that 44% of Singaporean travelers and 38% of Australians feel it’s more important now to immerse themselves in “authentic local experiences.”

For travelers from the U.K. and U.S., this dips to about a third.

Many travelers are also want to do as many activities as possible while on holiday with 30% of U.S. and Australian travelers looking to pack in experiences.

The findings spell good news for tours and activities suppliers with about a fifth of travelers also planning to do more guided tours than before the pandemic.

Travelers also feel it’s more important than before the pandemic to invest in a big trip with more than 25% of travelers across the five markets looking to “splurge.”

Crucially for the industry, Tripadvisor site behavioral data taken from December, reveals average spend per trip for 2022 is likely to exceed that of 2019.

The company says American travelers are likely to spend 29% more on their average trip while the average booking rate for Australian travelers is likely to be up 19% this year versus 2019.

However, Japanese, British and Italian travelers are all expecting to spend less in 2022.

The Ipsos Mori research was carried out with about 2,000 travelers from each of the markets via an online poll in November 2021.

Let’s go back to the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. After being battered by all sorts of terrible twists and turns, the travel industry was struggling to maintain a pulse while dealing with constantly changing rules and regulations, including the need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test before re-entering the U.S. I remember thinking at the time, “How in the world is this going to work?”

Croatia's tourism recovering into 2022

January 10 2022 – Croatia’s tourism recovering into 2022

Croatia recorded 13.8 million tourist arrivals and around 84 million overnight stays last year. Compared to 2020, the number of arrivals increased by 77% and the overnight stays by 55%, announced the Ministry of Tourism.

Compared with the pre-crisis year of 2019, the tourist arrivals last year reached 67% of the level at that time, and overnight stays were at 77%.

Croatia’s tourism achieved the best results in the Mediterranean in the second pandemic year despite all the challenges, stated the head of the Croatian Tourism Board (HTZ), Kristjan Stanicic, according to the statement. This year, the tourism industry aims to reach 90% of the level from the record year of 2019, he added.

Tourism Minister Nikolina Brnjac stressed that in the previous year Croatia strengthened its image of a safe and responsible destination.

Regarding the source markets, most tourists came from Germany (2.9 million arrivals, +84%), followed by Slovenia (1.2 million arrivals, +18%). Austrian vacationers ranked third among foreign tourists in terms of arrivals. Last year, 1.1 million arrivals by Austrians were recorded in the Adriatic country, an increase of 18% compared to 2020.

Austrians were followed by the guests from Poland (1 million arrivals, +50%) and the Czech Republic 775,000 arrivals, +50%).

Foreign tourists were responsible for almost 72 million or 85.7 of all overnight stays in the previous year. Domestic vacationers (2.3 million arrivals, +41% compared to 2020) generated 12.3 million overnight stays.

Madeira Savage Island

January 07 2022 – Madeira enlarges Savage Islands marine sanctuary

The government of Madeira has announced that the marine reserve around the Savage Islands (Ilhas Selvagens) will be extended to 12 nautical miles.

The move will create the largest fully protected marine sanctuary in the whole of the Northern Atlantic and Europe.

The decision coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the declaration of the remote islets as a nature reserve, situated 280 kilometres south of the Madeiran mainland, off the coast of north-western Africa.

The nature reserve was one of the first protected areas in Portugal.

All species inside the reserve will be fully protected from fishing or other extractive activities.

Researchers from Oceano Azul have teamed up with the Waitt Foundation and National Geographic Pristine Seas to conduct scientific research, which back the needs for a reserve.

The waters around these islands are a vital passageway for migrating fish and mammals, while the waters near the islands’ shores provide essential nursery habitats.

The groups stressed the importance of the move, given that only under eight per cent of the ocean is currently protected.

It is hoped that this will inspire others in taking similar measures to preserve our oceans.

The Savage Islands are rugged and inhospitable, inhabited only by rangers.

They are an important nesting point for the Atlantic’s largest breeding colony of Cory’s Shearwaters and also home to the endemic Selvagens Gecko.

This announcement follows on from the recognition of Porto Santo as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2020, both on land and sea.

Ireland loosens requirements for vaccinated travellers

Tourism Ireland has welcomed a government decision to lift additional pre-testing requirements for travel to the destination.

The measures were initially introduced to combat the emergence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

Fully-vaccinated travellers will no longer need to take a pre-departure PCR test before entering the country.

The new regulations for entry into the Republic of Ireland are:

  • Vaccinated or recovered travellers into Ireland will be required to present evidence of a valid Digital Covid Certificate or other acceptable proof of vaccination/previous infection prior to travel.
  • Travellers who are not vaccinated or recovered will be required to present evidence of a not-detected RT-PCR test carried out no more than 72 hours before their arrival into Ireland.

Julie Wakley, Tourism Ireland head of Great Britain, commented on the change in restrictions: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome travellers back to Ireland without the need for pre-departure testing for fully vaccinated visitors.

“Hassle-free travel within the Common Travel Area has resumed and fully vaccinated visitors from Great Britain will be able to travel between GB and Ireland with no testing or quarantine required.”

All visitors to Ireland must complete a Passenger Locator Form.

Travel guidelines to Northern Ireland remain unchanged for visitors travelling from GB.

Our Malta Adventure

Our Malta Adventure

January 05 2022 – Our Malta Adventure

It’s the light in Valletta, Malta that truly enchants. Reflecting off limestone walled cities, citadels, fortresses, towers and batteries, the sun’s rays create a captivating, almost illuminating look. It’s addictive, as travelers can stare at the same buildings viewed just hours before, but as every hour passes, the light imparts a new, different glow and feel to the structures.

One facet of Malta never changes, though. More than 7,000 years of history seemingly “ooze” from every corner, block and crevice of this Mediterranean nation’s fortifications, built or reinforced between 1,450 BC and the mid-20th century. Most notable are the medieval fortification improvements made by the Order of the Knights of St. John (aka Crusaders), but Malta’s history is also laced with tales and structures representing the Prehistoric, Neolithic, Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Crusader and European periods.

Blessed with natural harbors and a strategic Mediterranean locale, the Maltese archipelago today attracts not foreign invaders but modern-day travelers — 2.75 million visitors and 700,000 cruise visitors in 2019. Valletta, Malta’s bustling capital is a UNESCO World Heritage site, an open-air museum of sorts with historic churches, palaces, palazzos, Maltese balconies, fountains, monuments and residences, most between 250 and 400 years old.

While historic sites and fortifications are a huge draw, so are turquoise-colored grottos, beaches, scuba diving and snorkeling sites, as well as art museums and culinary diversions

In addition, visitors often tour medieval Mdina, the well-preserved, walled city and former capital about eight miles from Valletta as well as nearby Rabat. And another of the Maltese isles, Gozo, beckons with more history, quiet towns and pristine beaches.

In September, Luxury Travel Advisor returned to Valletta to cruise on the 930-passenger Viking Venus, and also stayed post-cruise at the Rosselli – AX Privilege, a luxury boutique property in Old Town Valletta. Here’s a sampling of what luxury travelers can see and do.

Valletta’s Historic Core

History buffs can select from a cornucopia of appealing museums and historic sites to tour in downtown Valletta; they include the grandiose “The Palace” (former Grandmaster’s palace ad now the official seat of the country’s President), the Palace Armoury, the National Museum of Archaeology, the Fortress Builders Interpretive Center and Fort St. Elmo (home to the National War Museum). Check websites in advance for hours of operation, though; the Palace’s State Rooms have been closed for renovations.

A relatively new Malta attraction is MUZA, a visual arts museum within the historic building that was once the seat of the Italian knights of the Order of the Knights of St. John. Cited by Architecture Digest as one of 15 noteworthy new global museums, its diverse collection focuses on four themes — the Mediterranean, Europe, Empire and The Artist.

Key works include those by southern Italian artist Mattia Petri, British 20th-century artist Victor Pasmore and Malta’s famed sculptor Antonio Sciortino. What’s nifty is that this museum juxtaposes old masters with contemporary works, offers visitors the opportunity to see “techniques on videos” and has designed interactive experiences complementing the displayed art or object.

When it’s time for fresh air, we recommend a stroll through the Upper Barrakka Gardens—particularly if you can arrive by 11:45 a.m. Head for the railing that overlooks the 16th-century Saluting Battery, constructed by the Order of the Knights of St. John at Valletta’s Grand Harbour. It’s a great perch for a selfie with stellar views of Fort St. Angelo, other fortifications and cruise ships docked in the harbor. At noon most days, though, the big, booming draw is when the Saluting Battery “troops” in full military regalia fire a historic cannon.

Certainly, one “don’t miss” attraction in Valletta is St. John’s Co-Cathedral Malta, commissioned in 1572 by Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere of the Order of the Knights of St. John. Designed by Maltese architect Gerolamo Cassar, it’s dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Inside, travelers will discover Baroque art, frescoes and relics, ornate marble floors, three-dimensional statues and carved stone walls. We loved the lovely, vaulted ceiling showcasing the Italian Baroque artistry of Mattia Preti.

Also, be sure to visit the co-cathedral’s oratory to look for “The Beheading of St. John the Baptist,” one of the largest paintings ever created by famed artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio; it’s his only signed work. This year, the co-cathedral finished restoring the oratory and opened the Caravaggio Wing; Caravaggio’s painting was fitted with new LED lighting, plus restoration work was completed on 13 paintings by Preti and a gilt wooden soffit.

Want to tour the co-cathedral without daytime crowds? After-hours private tours can be arranged for many of Valletta’s historic attractions including the cathedral. Conducted with a private guide between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., the one-hour private cathedral tours must be booked by a travel advisor at least one month in advance. For information visit, https://www.stjohnscocathedral.com/exclusive-tours/

For those with several days in Valletta, we’d recommend a tour of the Manuel (Manoel) Theater, built in 1731 by Grandmaster Antonio Manoel de Vilhena. One of the world’s oldest theaters, it’s known for its pale blue trompe-l’oeil ceiling, impressive chandelier and perfect acoustics. Located on Old Theatre Street, it’s now considered Malta’s National Theater.

Another historic and cultural option is to tour a historic palazzo. Owners of some grand Maltese residences have opened their doors to allow visitors exclusive, behind-the-scenes access. For example, Casa Rocca Piccola offers a leisurely guided private tour — often given by Marquis and Marchioness de Piro during which travelers can opt to sip Prosecco or Champagne and taste a few local Maltese delicacies.

Gardening fans should consider a tour of the Palazzo Parisio, Naxxar, which has fine, privately owned gardens open to the public; expect Italian symmetry coupled with Mediterranean colors and flora fragrances. Reflecting 19th-century Italian and Maltese craftsmanship, the palazzo will wow visitors with lavishly decorated ceilings, murals and frescoes, fine stucco work, antique furniture, rare paintings and plenty of gilding.

Or, if natural history is a passion, Mdina has an excellent National Museum of Natural History; check out the fossils, bird nests, minerals, ecological exhibits and dioramas of natural Maltese habitats, plus a vast collection of birds and the largest squid ever found in Maltese waters.

A Taste of History

While luxury travelers love to tour the fortifications, among the world’s best examples of military architecture, Heritage Malta recently introduced a new “Taste of History” program — coupling history with cuisine. Available only as an exclusive dining experience for private groups or privately booked individuals, it introduces travelers to traditional Maltese food with recipes curated from history. Menus are created by professional Maltese chefs, plus guests dine in the same venues where the inquisitors, corsairs, knights and libertines once dined.

Luxury Travel Advisor experienced this new culinary program one evening at the Malta Maritime Museum in Birgu. We were greeted by Liam Gauci, the museum’s principal curator, who provided an introductory explanation about the Taste of History concept. It’s based on research gleaned from archives, historical recipe books, kitchen inventories and museum artifacts. The curator shows guests a few artifacts that help relate the cuisine to the site/era (in our case, two historic weapons). Then guests are seated in a lovely private setting with multiple courses delivered to the table, and explanations for each. Advisors can reserve this exclusive, private experience through tastehistory.mt.

When it comes to dining out anywhere in Malta, we’d suggest sampling a few of the traditional, rustic dishes, varying by season. Among those are Lampuki Pie (fish pie), rabbit stew, and Kapunata, which is a Maltese version of ratatouille. On most food shop counters, you’ll also notice Bigilla, a thick pate of broad beans with garlic. Also try the traditional tasty snacks of “hobz biz-zejt,” a round of bread dipped in olive oil, rubbed with ripe tomatoes and filled with a mix of tuna, onion, garlic, tomatoes and capers, and pastizzi, a flaky pastry parcel filled with ricotta cheese or mushy peas.

But whether travelers prefer Maltese favorite dishes or international cuisine, choices abound. In April 2021, the Michelin Malta Guide listed 31 restaurants of note including five designated Michelin one-star eateries; repeaters are De Mondian, Noni and Under Grain. New to that one-Michelin-star list are Bahia and ION – The Harbour.

ION – The Harbour dishes up cuisine by two-Michelin-star Chef Alex Dilling and is nestled within the new Iniala Harbour Houseluxury property; this eatery’s terrace overlooks the Grand Harbour. Good to know? Toward the end of this year, Bahia will move from its townhouse restaurant location in Lija to a new home on the upper floors of the Villa Corinthia within the Corinthia Palace in Attard.

Another Michelin one-star restaurant is Under Grain, the flagship haute cuisine restaurant of Rosselli – AX Privilege, a luxury boutique property in Old Town Valletta. The restaurant opened in 2020 and achieved a Michelin star just a few months after its opening; that star was retained in 2021. Executive Head Chef Victor Borg has created classic dishes that have been reimagined by combining new ingredients with farm-to-table meats and poultry.

Malta’s vineyards also invite luxury travelers to enjoy exclusive access to their tasting rooms. Guests can step onto a terrace and enjoy a glass of wine overlooking the vineyards. International grape varieties grown on Maltese islands include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Carignan, Chenin Blanc and Moscato, but be sure to sample Gellewza and Ghirghentina, Malta’s tasty indigenous grape varieties.

Water Play

The secluded bays, warm waters and uninhabited islands of Malta beckon luxury travelers with the destination’s many options for private boat charters. Travelers can swim, snorkel, scuba dive in crystal clear turquoise waters, explore the caves and rock formations of Gozo Island, sail south of Malta to Marsakala Bay, take a dip in St. Peter’s Pool, or explore the Blue Grotto, home to a huge natural arch in the sea cliffs.

Thirty-minute Blue Grotto boat trips take visitors to view the entry to seven caves including the Honeymoon Cave, Reflection Cave and Cat’s Cave. Hint? The best viewing time to see the Blue Grotto is “before midmorning” when the sun is shining into the grotto. If headed to the grotto by boat, consider a snack or meal afterward at the nearby seaside hamlet of Wied iz-Zurrieq.

We stopped here at the casual Step In+, an eatery with outdoor patio space atop the seaside hillside; a path leads down to the boat area. If you go, we’d recommend seafood lovers order the octopus in garlic or mussels in shells, with salads, beef, chicken and veggie dishes also available. A traditional Maltese Platter is comprised of peppered goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes, pickled onions, olives, broad beans and Maltese biscuits. Plus, the menu offers more than a dozen kinds of pizza.

Beach lovers have many options in Malta, but many travelers enjoy pretty Golden Bay Beach or Gnejna Bay Beach, as well as beaches in Gozo.

Luxury and Private Accommodations

Malta’s luxury accommodations include a mix of luxury hotels, historic boutique hotels, 16th- and 17th-century “Palazzos” (mansions of nobles), private villas, and historic farmhouses. Malta’s official, five-star property list has 17 properties, three that has opened or reopened with refurbishments.

Opened in 2020, the Hyatt Regency, St. Julian’s Malta offers luxurious one-bedroom, 592-foot Ambassador’s Suites, while the Malta Marriott Hotel & Spa, St. Julian’s, is a property that’s undergone a $35 million renovation/update. We’d suggest sun lovers head for the roof top pool. In addition, the new Iniala Harbour House & Residences, Valletta, opened in 2020, with 23 uniquely designed rooms; it’s spread among four Maltese houses and their vaults below — and located on St Barbara Bastion overlooking the Grand Harbour. It also has a Michelin one-star restaurant, as mentioned earlier.

Our stay was at Rosselli – AX Privilege, a lovely luxury boutique hotel in the historic core of Valletta, which opened in 2019. We loved the character of this former 17th-century palazzo, whose original owners were Pietro Rosselli, an avant-garde goldsmith and philanthropist, and Alusietta Massa Rosselli from the established Massa family.

With classic Renaissance and Baroque architecture, the historic centuries-old palazzo turned boutique hotel was renovated with care. Opening in 2019, the updated architecture remains true to the building’s original characteristics such as retention of its Maltese balconies, but at the same time, its renovation incorporated contemporary elements, styles and materials. So, guests will discover colored marble, brass, wood, glittering mirrored glass and bold wallpaper design. That said, the Rossellis — in spirit at least — are ever present. Just check out the large wall paintings of them (prim-and-proper for the era) peering down into the reception desk area.

Offering 25 unique designer rooms, Rosselli – AX Privilege impressed us with its friendly front-desk staff, soaring palazzo atrium, elevator to the upper floors and well-appointed, comfortable accommodations. We stayed in No. 301, which was spacious with two twin beds, marble-topped, small end tables, a large wall-mounted flat screen TV, desk and desk chair. The bathroom design featured one sink, a toilet and humongous “fully open” rainforest shower at one end.

To splurge, though, we’d reserve one of five designer rooms and suites within the palazzo’s Piano Nobile, the principal floor that would have typically served as the main living and sleeping quarters of the house. Each of these accommodations has a traditional wooden Maltese balcony with views to the sea, the old university or Jesuit church dome.

This boutique luxury property has several nice guest touches. A concierge will assist with destination insight. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. In addition, guests can relax with a drink in hand at the plunge pool on the fourth floor. Continental breakfast is also served for guests in Grain Street, more casual nd convivial than the one-Michelin-star Under Grain.

What’s new? Luxury Travel Advisor watched in early September as a new platform was being built just in front of the property “in the street” within the city’s historic core. Starting November 1, it will become a new Grain Street al fresco dining platform, where guests can sip a glass of Maltese wine and taste authentic dishes, while dining outside amid Valletta’s street vibes.

For something authentic and a bit different, those seeking a quieter vacation experience can stay at a luxury farmhouse on the Maltese island of Gozo. Since the island is smaller than Malta, it has fewer people, yet beautiful beaches, historic sites and a great variety of local restaurants. Also, a new fast catamaran service has been introduced between Gozo’s Mgarr harbor and Valletta. Gozo has many upscale farmhouse-stay options; they offer modern amenities, many have private pools and some offer superb views.

Cruise Ship Spas

Cruise ship spas

January 05 2022 – Cruise Ship Spas.

To wash away last year’s stress and anxiety, luxury travelers are heading back to the high seas for a much-needed getaway. Increasingly, they’re also looking for therapeutic indulgences — a soothing massage or facial, a wellness activity, acupuncture or a medi-spa treatment.

Fortunately, pampering cruise ship spas await — many on the newest luxury cruise ships setting sail this year. Other spas are on the drawing board for razzle-dazzle new ships launching in 2022 or 2023, and other ships have redesigned or enhanced spas. Here’s a sampling of luxury cruise ship spas that await.

What’s On Offer

With its next new ship, the 750-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur, on the horizon for a late 2023 debut, Regent Seven Seas Cruiseslast month also restarted cruise operations with the 750-passenger Seven Seas Explorer. The ship is now repositioning to PortMiami and will operate a season of Caribbean voyages between mid-November 2021 and March 2022.

An enclave of tranquility aboard Seven Seas Explorer is the Serene Spa & Wellness space, which offers treatments originating from the hundreds of destinations to which the cruise line sails. Guests have such restorative and body nourishing options as an Elemis facial, massage, manicure, pedicure, other restorative treatments, as well as a luxury Kerastase salon service. Plus, guests can experience the wellness aspect in culinary and shore excursion choices too.

For the ultimate in pampering, we’d recommend the full body “Regent Massage,” which involves a mixture of rosemary, sea funnel and Mediterranean sea buckhorn being worked into areas of body tension to soothe and detoxify muscles. The experience is enhanced by warm, eucalyptus-infused paraffin mitts and boots which nourish and hydrate the guest’s hands and feet.

One blissful treatment we also like is the 50-minute “Calming Rose Facial,” which is designed to comfort sensitive skin with a natural blend of rose absolute to hydrate the dermis. Rose extracts are used to smooth fine lines and a warm rose balm is massaged onto the guest’s hands and arms (think “pure relaxation”) and the result is smooth skin that’s soft as a rose petal.

Seven Seas Explorer also has a jogging track and robust fitness center. Guests who are 16 and older can enter the fitness center and use its spinning bikes, weights, treadmills, Technogym Strength Machines and work-out mats. One-on-one training can be arranged too.

The new 596-passenger Silver Moon, Silversea Cruises’ newest vessel, is now sailing the ocean blue and has a redesigned spa and fitness center with a large thermal area, relaxation area and gym. But Luxury Travel Advisor is highly anticipating the launch of the ultra-luxury line’s next new vessel, Silver Dawn, setting sail in spring 2022, as that sister vessel will offer a pioneering new wellness program called Otium.

Drawing from the line’s Italian heritage, “otium” in Roman culture and lifestyle was the opposite of “negotium” (the nonexistence of pleasure). In contrast, “otium” was a period of time that Romans devoted to leisure — bathing, conversing, theorizing, drinking, eating and relaxing.

So, diverging from many cruise ship existing wellness programs, Otium encourages balanced indulgence, pampering, and pleasure over sacrifice and delayed gratification. The view is that wellness should be a natural, enjoyable part of the day; that living well and being well are not mutually exclusive; and that wellness need not be a solitary, silent experience, but rather a social pursuit that is best enjoyed with others.

The Otium Spa Experience will begin with Silversea’s redesign of the spa and a highly selective treatment menu, designed by wellness experts for optimum relaxation. Beyond the massages and other pampering treatments, guests will unwind and socialize in the spa’s thermal areas with a glass of champagne or signature snacks enriched with such ingredients as caviar and truffles.

Crystal’s newest ship, the expeditionary 200-passenger Crystal Endeavor is a robust explorer that begins Antarctica cruises this month. It carries 18 Zodiacs, 14 sea kayaks and a two-guest (plus the pilot) submersible. Led by a team of veteran guides and naturalist experts, cruisers can head out for wildlife and marine life viewing, Zodiac landings ashore, kayaking adventures and much more.

But when travelers return to the ship or simply need a day’s relaxation, the full-service Crystal Life Salon & Spa and state-of-the-art Fitness Center offers relaxation and pampering. How about a 75-minute Hot Mineral Body Boost,” in which guests lie on the line’s famed “Amber and Quartz Crystal” bed? Heated minerals warm and relax the body, soothing Amber balm is applied and a restorative facial massage completes the treatment.

A 50-minute “Coconut Poultice Massage,” a 50-minute “Elemis High Performance Skin Energizer,” or for tired legs after a long hike ashore, the 40-minute “Ionithermie Revitalizing Leg Therapy” are among dozens of other options. Cruisers can also arrange for acupuncture, medi-spa treatments or personal training or attend pure-form yoga or pilates sessions.

Seabourn soon will have two new PC6 Polar Class expedition ships in the water — Seabourn Venture, slated for a March 2022 delivery, and Seabourn Pursuit, scheduled for a February 2023 delivery. Each will carry two custom-built submarines, 24 Zodiacs, kayaks, and a 26-person expedition team to engage guests throughout each voyage.

But the beauty of an ultra-luxury ship is that there is plenty of attention paid to relaxation and pampering too. Occupying a space all its own on Deck 7, Seabourn Venture’s 3,700-square-foot Spa & Wellness space been designed by Adam D. Tihany, as has the ship’s yoga and fitness areas, which offer floor-to-ceiling sea views. The spa’s sauna will also offer floor-to-ceiling windows, a new design amenity for Seabourn and unique to its expedition ships

Sleek and serene, the Spa & Wellness space will reflect the concept of a contemporary “floating forest,” with such details as a textured tree-inspired art mural, light wood-and-bronze material palette, live wood features and natural stone flooring. Design-wise, “branches of the floating forest” will spread into four tranquil treatment rooms, each with neutral, textured wall coverings, light wood, and bronze accents.

Cruisers can select from massages for face and body, plus detox, cleansing and wrap services. Within the spa, a fitness center will offer cardio and strength equipment as well as a fitness director to offer assessments and train guests in fitness regimes.

Seabourn’s guests also can enhance their physical, social, environmental and spiritual wellbeing through the line’s onboard Mindful Living Program: Spa & Wellness with Dr. Andrew Weil. Led by a Mindful Living Coach, the program will offer a holistic mind-and-body approach to wellbeing. Luxury Travel Advisor would suggest guests participate in the complimentary yoga and guided meditation sessions, as well as attend seminars on such topics as nutrition, integrative medicine, pain management and creative aging.

Pampering Enclaves

Viking’s ninth oceangoing ship, the new, 930-passenger Viking Saturn will join the Viking fleet in early 2023 and sail new itineraries in Scandinavian and Nordic countries. The line’s ships offer modern Scandinavian design and similar spaces from ship to ship; guests essentially know what to expect and like it that way. Luxury Travel Advisor particularly likes the Viking oceangoing ships for their serene Wintergarden, an elegant space under a canopy of Scandinavian trellised wood. It’s perfect for relaxing with a good book or indulging in afternoon tea service.

In keeping with Viking’s Nordic heritage, LivNordic Spa on board is designed with the holistic wellness philosophy of Scandinavia in mind—from the centuries-old tradition of the sauna to a snow grotto where snowflakes gently descend from the ceiling through chilled air. Pool-wise, in addition to the Main Pool with its retractable roof (permitting any-season swimming) the ship will offer Viking’s glass-backed Infinity Pool cantilevered off the stern, allowing guests to swim and take in sea or destination views.

Now under construction by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, Oceania Cruises’ new 1,200-passenger Vista will begin cruising with guests aboard in 2023. In addition to fielding such signature spaces as the Grand Staircase, Grand Dining Room and Grand Lounge, this upscale ship will offer relaxation and water play areas too. Its Pool Deck is expected to be a tranquil oasis for luxury guests, as they can opt to relax in a modern, beach club cabana.

When it’s time for a relaxing spa treatment, the new Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center will offer tranquil treatment areas. This area also includes work-out and personal training spaces, a salon and barbershop. Plus, a spa terrace will offer sweeping sea views.

Azamara’s four boutique ships including the 702-passenger Azamara Pursuit setting sail in 2022 all offer a full-service Sanctum Spa. Cruisers can book an oceanfront massage, get a quick manicure before hitting the town to explore, enhance their “look” with teeth whitening or barber services, or even book an acupuncture treatment.

This spa also offers state-of-the-art skincare services and restorative facials for both men and women. As for massages, cruisers have their pick of hot stone therapy, deep tissue massage, Swedish massage and other exotic massage treatments from around the world. We’d suggest trying the “Elemis Aroma Seaweed Massage,” or for body sculpting, a lime-and-ginger salt glow.

At the Sanctum Terrace, a private spa deck, guests also can sit in a bubbling saltwater bath with powerful water jets that massage the body — and at the same time, soak in the great views. Beyond the spa, Azamara offer complimentary onboard fitness and nutrition classes. Optional one-on-one personal training is available.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s 298-passenger Evrima, begins sailing in May 2022 and is expected to be an enclave of floating luxury, much like a private yachting experience with added perks. For example, within the ship’s Ritz-Carlton Spa, guests can enjoy a rejuvenating spa treatment with ESPA products in one of five private, ocean-view treatment rooms. In addition, the vessel has a full-service beauty lounge, gentleman’s grooming salon, sauna and steam room. Quiet zones will allow guests to disconnect from the world and connect with themselves.

Concluding a $250 million “Star Plus Initiative” renovation project, Windstar Cruises has taken delivery of its third all-suite Star Plus Class ship, Star Pride, the last of three sister vessels that have emerged “stretched” and transformed. Each ship’s capacity was increased to 312 passengers, 50 new suites were added; and all accommodations have new bathrooms. Star Pride will remain in Italy until it resumes sailing in the Mediterranean in April 2022.

The updated Star Pride offers more of what Windstar’s repeat guests told the line they desired. For example, guests can dine at two new venues — Star Grill by Steven Raichlen and a new specialty restaurant, Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso. Best of all, for spa fans, the ship now has an expanded and redesigned World Spa by Windstar.

We’d suggest for a glacial mud body wrap or perhaps a basalt stone massage. Those who want to work out in the gym can use new and improved Technogym equipment. Another plus is that Star Pride has a newly expanded sundeck with a new pool and whirlpool.

The first new ship in 20 years for upscale Sea Cloud Cruises, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, is now sailing. Combining five-star comfort, the feel of a private yacht and traditional seamanship, this three-masted, fully rigged sailing vessel (also motorized) is a modern interpretation of the line’s 90-year-old Sea Cloud flagship. The vessel’s spa has two treatment rooms, a steam bath, Finnish sauna, hairdressing salon and a large outdoor area, and there’s also a fitness center.

SeaDream Yacht Club offers a luxury, Thai-certified SeaDream Spa and Salon on its two yachting vessels, SeaDream I and SeaDream II. Thai-certified therapists provide such spa favorites as Sisley Paris treatments, radiant facials, detoxifying treatments, a soothing aroma massage and “Traditional Thai Massage” for men, women, and couples. Hair and nail services are also offered, and some spa treatments can be arranged in the ship’s open-air private massage area, if weather permits.

Expedition Ships

In September, Ponant launched its first high polar exploration vessel, the 245-passenger Le Commandant Charcot, notable as it’s the cruise industry’s first luxury hybrid electric polar ship; that means it can cut through a greater thickness of ice and can reach rarely visited places like Peter I Island, 300 miles off the Antarctica coast. The 123-cabin Polar Class PC2 ship also will operate on a mix of eco-friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG) and electric battery power.

The ship’s 4,600-square-foot Wellness Lounge called Nuan, located on Deck 9, is home to the Spa Biologique Recherche with three massage and beauty cubicles (including one double cubicle with a sea view), a nail salon and two lounges with sea views where guests can wait or relax after a session.

Other spaces include a hair salon, sauna, a snow room, plus the gym, which has a sea view where guests can wait or relax after a treatment. In addition, there’s a heated indoor swimming pool with a glass roof and counter-current swimming; a sunroom with large external-facing windows; and a Detox bar with sofas and armchairs.

New to the cruise industry is luxe-adventure Atlas Ocean Voyages. The first of five planned expedition ships, the 196-passenger World Navigator launched this year; it’s sailing in Antarctica this winter season. The ship’s 947-square-foot SeaSpa by L’Occitane offers two treatment rooms, a Serenity Room (capacity for eight) and an infrared sauna.

Luxury travelers can opt for 25 minutes of “Shea Ultra-Softening Hand Care,” or go full-in for a 60-minute or 90-minute “Deep Tissue Intense Relief” body massage. Four kinds of face care treatments are available, as is a 25-minute “Aromachologie Foot Relief” treatment, a 20-minute “Mind Relaxing Massage,” and much more.

During 2019, just before the pandemic began, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises launched Hanseatic Inspiration, designated as the line’s bilingual expedition ship with both English and German as official languages. On Deck 8, the 2,530-square-foot Ocean Spa offers treatment rooms with a nature-focused design; a Finnish sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows and an outdoor area; plus, a steam sauna, hydrotherapy shower and ice fountain.

In addition, guests can also enjoy massage and cosmetic treatments in light-filled rooms with a sea view. The focus of the entire ship is “Inspired by Nature,” so sustainable products by Vinoble, Hyapur, John Masters Organics and Nailberry are exclusively used in spa treatments. Hanseatic Inspiration also has a spacious fitness area adjacent to the spa with its own floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows and its own outdoor area too.

Many other classic, boutique and expedition ships also offer luxurious spa experiences including Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and the “new luxury” Celebrity Cruises. For example, Celebrity offers a Spa with 120 treatments, a SEA Thermal Suite with eight distinct spaces for guests to navigate a path to wellness, plus F45 fitness classes and Peloton cycling.

Israel travel

January 04 2022 -travel: Likely no more red countries by next week – health official

at the moment, the US, the UK and several other nations are still classified as red, with severe limitations on traveling to and from Israel.

By next week, there most likely won’t be any more red countries, Ilana Gens, head of the Health Ministry’s Public Health Services headquarters, told the Knesset Law and Constitution Committee.

At the moment, the list of red countries due to COVID-19 includes the US, the UK, the UAE, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria and Turkey.

“We estimate that next week, the list will remain empty because the model is relative and we are considering the ratio with morbidity in the country and also the incidence of morbidity from abroad on general morbidity,” she said, noting that as the impact of cases imported from abroad becomes less significant, there is less epidemiological justification in restricting travel.

Starting from Sunday, vaccinated tourists from non-red countries will be able to enter Israel.

More resilient tourism industry emerging in 2022

More resilient tourism industry emerging in 2022

January 04 2022 – More resilient tourism industry emerging in 2022

Just as the African tourism industry was starting to show promising signs of recovery, a new variant reared its ugly head and threw everything off-kilter. Luckily, Africa specialists predict that a flourishing future awaits the travel and tourism industry in Africa in 2022 and beyond.

The world’s reaction to the fact that South Africa’s scientists identified the omicron variant, was nothing short of devastating, especially for the South African tourism industry. In a knee-jerk reaction, countries around the world closed their borders to Africa one by one.

The effect? In just 48 hours, South Africa’s tourism industry lost over $64 million in travel bookings. That is according to the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa and the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association, representing the South African hospitality and the international inbound tourism private sector, respectively.

Even though the industry breathed a huge sigh of relief when the Biden administration said it would lift the travel ban from Dec. 31, many wondered whether it was too little, too late with traveler confidence already eroded.

But, according to safari operators, U.S. travelers have reacted with resilience, and they are eager to explore Africa once again.

“In the short term, the uncertainty omicron has created as well as the travel bans that were placed on the region have impacted bookings to some degree but not to the level we have seen in the past. The early indicators show that many guests still are determined to travel,” said Wayne Nupen, regional touring director at AndBeyond.

Wilderness Safaris chief commercial officer Hadley Allen agrees and said it has been encouraging to see most U.S. travelers remaining positive that they will be able to travel in the coming months, while those with immediate travel plans are mostly postponing to early spring.

For Kota Tabuchi, Travel Beyond’s managing director of Africa, new enquiries are much more serious about traveling and more resilient to the news cycles. “Of the clients that booked a trip to Africa during Covid, omicron rarely comes up in conversation,” he said. “Of those clients who paid a deposit prior to Covid and opted to continue deferring their trip, omicron is certainly a topic we discuss. We have a small handful of ‘deferred’ bookings still on the horizon, and once they are off the books, we feel that Covid-related discussions will become less frequent.”

Omicron has definitely created a temporary setback for Africa, but the future looks bright, according to industry players.

“Almost everyone has safari on their bucket list,” said Jim Holden, president of Holden Safaris. “When the time is right, they’ll take a safari. Patience is a virtue.”

Sustainability and regenerative travel

The reason for this optimism is that Africa is what African Travel president Sherwin Banda calls the gold standard for sustainability. He explained that sustainability is at the core of Africa and is part of Africa’s fabric. That is what will set the continent apart for years to come and what will attract travelers who are looking for a “regenerative travel experience” in the coming months.

As Jonathon Day, an associate professor focused on sustainable tourism at Purdue University, recently explained in The New York Times: “Sustainable tourism is sort of a low bar. At the end of the day, it’s just not making a mess of the place. Regenerative tourism says, let’s make it better for future generations.”

According to Allen, “restorative safaris” that make a positive impact on conservation and communities are sought after, as well as intimate and authentic experiences that not only offer guests life-changing experiences, but that also give back to the world in a way that inspires positive action.

The examples where African operators made things better for future generations are countless. Many operators have continued to care for the surrounding communities and for the wildlife despite not receiving any income during long months of travel restrictions.

Nupen said that if there is one thing AndBeyond has learned from the pandemic it is that the continued investment in the resilience of communities surrounding wildlife reserves is an absolute necessity. “There are many lessons out of the pandemic, but this is especially crucial for us,” he said.

Allen agreed and said the pandemic and subsequent travel lockdowns and restrictions have truly emphasized the crucial role tourism plays in driving local economies, wildlife protection and community empowerment.

“The Covid-driven loss of tourism revenue to all the remote African areas since 2020 has been a stark reminder of the enormous value that our guests and camps bring to the long-term conservation of these priceless wild places,” she said.

For Holden, the love of Africa’s tourism industry for the continent, the wildlife and the communities is inspiring.

“The owners of small, boutique lodges represent all that is best about safaris, struggling through the pandemic with nothing else but passion for the welfare of the wildlife and local people, all at great cost to themselves financially and mentally. I take my hat off to them,” he said. “There is a resilience to the whole idea of safari that will ensure its survival long after Covid is a thing of the past.”

Almost everyone involved in the safari business is in it for reasons other than just financial, which will ensure it endures long into the future.”

Thailand’s famous Maya Bay reopens

Thailand's famous Baya Bay reopens

January 04 2022 – Thailand’s famous Maya Bay reopens

Maya Bay is probably one of the most iconic spots in Thailand. Funnily enough, despite the immense beauty of the bay, it gained its status mainly after featuring in the movie The Beach in 2000 which starred Leonardo DiCaprio.

Throughout the years, masses of tourists visited the bay to see its beauty with their own eyes. According to estimates, at some point the spot was visited by an astonishing 6000 people per day.

The effects of overtourism

Given the fact that the bay is not exactly huge, it is clear that this situation was far from sustainable. Authorities had to deal with plenty of issues with regards to overtourism in the bay, from garbage on the beach to damages to the ecosystem, including the coral.

At some point, locals decided that enough was enough and after they expressed their dissatisfaction with the gruesome situation, Maya Bay was closed to the public in 2018.

At first the plan was to ban the public from visiting the island for 4 months. However, given that there was a lot to do to restore the ecosystem and build the necessary infrastructure for the protection of it in the future, the closure lasted much longer.

But it must be said that this closure benefited the ecosystem of the bay greatly, as it is now in much better shape than almost 4 years ago, with many animals having returned to Maya Bay in the absence of people.

Bay reopens to foreign tourists

And almost four years after, Maya Bay re-open to foreign visitors. The “doors” to the bay opened on January 1, 2022. However, visitors have to follow the introduced rules and restrictions. From the link above you can check what rules you should follow.

According to these regulations, boats are not allowed to enter the bay and tourists are dropped off at a pier behind the island. Only eight speedboats are allowed to dock here at the same time.

Moreover, tours are limited to one hour, with a maximum of 300 tourists allowed per tour. The bay “operates” from 10 am to 4 pm. Tourists are obliged to make a reservation to take part in these tours.

Finally, swimming in the seawaters of the bay is prohibited due to the fact that they are the home to 161 blacktip reef sharks. Local authorities want to preserve the population of this species whose number grew immensely since 2018 (an estimated 6 back then).

Thus, as Maya Bay re-open to foreign visitors after almost 4 years, Thailand is looking to implement a sustainable tourism model which could perhaps inspire many other destinations worldwide to follow the same path with the aim of the protection of the environment.
