Introducing additional services will give Irish passengers greater access to travel to a wide range of destinations on Qatar Airways’ global network, the most popular of which from Dublin include Australia, Thailand, India, the Maldives and the Philippines.

Schedule changes will also see even further improved connectivity to Australia and New Zealand. The airline has quickly rebuilt its network to pre-pandemic levels, enabling passengers to connect to over 140 destinations around the globe.

Gary Kershaw, Country Manager for UK & Ireland, Qatar Airways said: “Demand for flights and international travel is returning at pace, and we are absolutely thrilled to be able to offer our passengers flying from Dublin more choice about how and when they fly. We look forward to seeing these changes come into effect later this year, a moment which will mark another important step in the travel industry’s recovery from the pandemic.”

Qatar Airways has been operating the Dublin-Doha route for five years, having launched a daily service in 2017.

February 15, 2022 – Icelandair is introducing a new livery with colours inspired by Icelandic nature, including the northern lights.

Icelandair launches brand refresh with new livery

As part of a complete refresh of the Icelandair brand, this is the first time the whole livery design has changed since 2006, supporting the promise of bringing the spirit of Iceland to the world.

TF-ICE, a Boeing 737 Max 8 named Jökulsárlón (after the famous glacier lagoon), is the first of the fleet to be painted in the new livery, with plans to have a total of five Max aircraft with the new livery in operation by the end of this month.

Icelandair intend for the whole Boeing 737 Max 8/9 fleet to be painted by the end of November alongside the aircraft maintenance schedule, a total of 14 planes.

Furthermore, Icelandair plan to also paint their regional fleet in the new livery colours, a total of five planes, by the end of October.

The bright Turkish is a representation of the northern lights, while the magenta signifies the collective creative power of Iceland, with just a hint of sunrise.

The cyan is the refreshing Icelandic summer sky that’s filled with light, and the bright yellow is the sun reflecting off waterfalls, glaciers, and even simmering magma.

Finally, the bright green represents the life that can be found, even after the harshest of events.

“Icelandair is delighted to be able to kick off 2022 with an exciting new livery design, our first since 2006.

“Part of a wider brand refresh, the new livery colours represent the different natural wonders Iceland is renowned for.

“From the aurora borealis, to the vast Icelandic glaciers and waterfalls, Icelandair’s new livery design celebrates the true spirit of Iceland,” said head of global marketing at Icelandair, Gísli Brynjólfsson.

Emirates rebuilds Australia services as borders reopen

Starting March 1st, the airline will offer customers an additional seven flights per week, to reach fourteen weekly services from Dubai to the News South Wales capital.

With the re-opening of Australian borders set for February 21st, Emirates is increasing services to meet market demand.

The additional daily frequency between Sydney and Dubai will operate as EK412/413 and will offer 14 first class suites, 76 lie-flat seats in business class and 426 ergonomically designed seats in economy.

From Sydney, EK413 will depart at 21:45 and arrive in Dubai at 05:15 the next day.

The A380 aircraft is also operating daily flights to Melbourne, having been upgraded recently from the Boeing 777-300ER, on February 1st.

MAG preparing for bumper half term traveller numbers

February 11, 2022 – Manchester Airport is expecting February half-term to be one of its busiest periods since the pandemic began, as passengers respond to the removal of testing requirements and take advantage of a return to restriction-free travel.

MAG preparing for bumper half term traveller numbers

The anticipated increase comes after the government announced on January 24th that fully-vaccinated passengers would no longer be required to take any tests when travelling to the UK from February 11th, a move which has made travelling abroad easier and cheaper for millions of Britons for the first time in over a year.

This announcement saw businesses across the travel industry record a sharp increase in bookings.

The total airline seat capacity across MAG airports is around 20 per cent higher for February and March than January.

MAG chief executive, Charlie Cornish, said: “It’s great that passengers are clearly feeling more confident as we go into February half term, and we expect our airports to be busier than we have seen in recent months.

“We welcomed the government’s decision to reintroduce restriction-free travel in time for the holidays.

“Airlines are now putting on more seats and there’s a real sense of excitement for travel as we head into the summer season.

“Our strong recovery means we are looking to recruit all sorts of roles across our airports. With our terminals filling with passengers again, this is a fantastic time to consider a job in aviation.”

Looking further ahead, MAG anticipates consumer confidence will continue to improve.

The group is preparing to handle passenger volumes close to pre-pandemic levels as the recovery strengthens over the summer season.

Passenger figures for January – released by MAG today – show how testing measures introduced in response to the Omicron variant weakened demand for international travel.

January passenger volumes were down 63 per cent on the same month in 2019, which was significantly quieter than the recovery seen in late 2021.

Aer Lingus to reconnect to Miami from October

Customers will once again be able to travel directly to Miami this October with Aer Lingus via the Dublin gateway, operating two services per week until October 28th, increasing to three per week from October 29th.

The removal of testing requirements for fully vaccinated arrivals into the UK is welcome news for customers and will help rebuild consumer confidence in travel in 2022.

Aer Lingus offers connections to Miami from eight UK airports; London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Leeds Bradford, Edinburgh and Glasgow via Dublin.

Bill Byrne, executive vice-president US at Aer Lingus, said; “We are delighted to be building back our US connectivity this year and there’s no doubt that travel is back for 2022.

Gatwick to reopen south terminal next month

blank

blank

February 11, 2022 – Gatwick Airport has announced it will reopen its south terminal in March – after nearly two years being dormant – to help meet the expected strong demand this summer and beyond as confidence in international travel returns.

Gatwick to reopen south terminal next month

The news comes on the day that testing requirements for those arriving into the UK have been eased significantly, with fully-vaccinated passengers and those under the age of 18 no longer needing to take pre-departure and post-arrival tests.

Flights have been operating solely from the north terminal since June 2020 to save on costs, but activity will return to the south terminal from March 27th, as Gatwick enters what it expects to be a busy summer season.

British Airways has already announced it will restart its short-haul services from Gatwick from March 29th, with 35 new European routes added.

Vueling will also be expanding its operations, adding five new short-haul routes and basing three aircraft at Gatwick.

Tickets for over 30 exciting long-haul routes from Gatwick are also on sale, including New York, Tampa, Bangkok, Phuket, Mauritius, Dubai, Doha, Islamabad – and range of cities across Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico, including Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Cancun, Antigua and Montego Bay.

The increased demand is also positive news for the local job market – with Gatwick’s local communities among some of the country’s worst affected by the impacts of the pandemic.

Gatwick and its partners – airlines, retailers, ground handlers etc – have been recruiting for some time, with more than 2,000 jobs still available for positions such as security officers, IT specialists, engineers, shop and restaurant workers, ground and cargo handlers and cabin crew.

Stewart Wingate, chief executive of Gatwick Airport, said: “After an incredibly challenging two years for the airport, our partners, local communities and the entire aviation industry, we are delighted to be reopening our South Terminal next month.

“Following some major announcements from our airlines about significantly increased flying schedules, and from Government on removing travel restrictions and airport slot regulations, we can now look forward to once again operating a busy Gatwick this summer and beyond.

Airlines who will be operating from the south terminal include British Airways, Vueling, Wizz, Ryanair, Norwegian, Turkish Airlines, TAP, Eastern Airways, Aurigny, Aer Lingus, Air Baltic, Airmaltia, Air Europa and Enter Air, while easyJet will operate across both south and north terminals.

Emirates goes double-daily from Gatwick as demand soars

Since the start of the year, UK bookings from Gatwick alone have more than doubled.

The increase in services at Gatwick follows the quick restart of operations to Emirates’ hubs across the UK as the airline continues to respond to the lifting of international travel restrictions around the world.

Flight EK09 will land at Gatwick at 18:25 today and return flight EK010 will depart at 20:25, arriving in Dubai (DXB) tomorrow at 07:20.

This service joins the existing Flight EK015 landing at Gatwick at 11:40 and return flight EK016, departing at 13:35 and arriving in Dubai at 00:40 (all times local).

The introduction of the second daily Gatwick service takes Emirates’ total UK weekly flights to 91.

Gatwick is being served by both the Boeing 777 and the A380 widebody aircraft.

Richard Jewsbury, divisional vice president at Emirates UK, commented: “We have seen a considerable uptick in demand for international travel in recent weeks, particularly from the south-east and are pleased to be expanding our operations from Gatwick.

“Emirates is fully committed to the UK and we have operated flights from the airport for over 30 years, providing vital connectivity to Dubai and across our international network for passengers travelling for business, leisure or to visit loved ones.

“The route has also carried billions of pounds worth of cargo into and out of the region – supporting UK businesses of all shapes and sizes.”

The return of the popular A380 aircraft increases capacity on Emirates’ flights between Melbourne and its Dubai hub by over 50%. As Australia’s international borders have reopened and travel demand rises, more travellers have more options.

Because Emirates is the official airline and partner of the ongoing Expo 2020 Dubai, the A380 plane arrived in Melbourne with a special Expo livery.

“At Emirates, we are overjoyed to see the A380 return to Melbourne.” “With the return of the Victorian capital to our A380 network, Australians will have greater choices for leisure and business travel,” said Barry Brown, Emirates Divisional Vice President for Australasia, in a statement.

“This year marks the 25th anniversary of our service to Australia, with Melbourne serving as our first Australian destination in 1996.” Our devotion to this country is as great today as it was then. Adding more seats to our Melbourne service demonstrates our commitment as we continue to expand our services to Australia.”

Australia is Emirates’ third-largest market for A380 operations. Melbourne will join Sydney in providing Emirates’ A380 services, which resumed on December 1, 2021.

The new Airbus A320neo will join the fleet, enabling the start of two new routes from Tirana to Friedrichshafen and Rimini. As a result of that investment. The airline will also start operations to and from Kukës International Airport to Vienna, Memmingen/Munich West, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden and Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. The new low fare routes are already on sale on www.wizzair.com and via the WIZZ mobile app with fares starting as low as EUR 19.99.

Wizz Air – new routes from Albania

Wizz Air started operations in Albania in April 2017 and has carried over 500,000 passengers over four years of successful operations. With today’s announcement, the airline will have a fleet of eight modern, state of the art young aircraft at its Tirana base by this Summer. Wizz Air remains highly committed to the Albanian market and to offering great services, paired with low fares for passengers. The airline is adding the new Albanian airport Kukës to its network with four new routes. The newly allocated capacity of over 784,000 seats per year will further contribute to the Albanian aviation market and to the creation of 84 new direct jobs with Wizz Air and 588 local jobs in the associated industries**. Together with the six new routes, Wizz Air now offers 42 routes to 13 countries from Tirana.

Wizz Air continues to ramp up recruitment in Albania as it looks to hire more cabin crew from its Tirana base. The airline will be hosting a series of cabin crew recruitment events on 11, 18 and 28 February in Tirana and eight additional events across the country. Wizz Air welcomes applications from experienced cabin crew, as well as those with no previous experience at all. The airline’s industry-leading training lasts between four and six weeks, depending on experience, and new recruits will benefit from being paid a salary during the entire training period. More information about job opportunities in Wizz Air can be found on careers.wizzair.com.

Edi Rama, the Prime Minister of Albania, said: It is a special pleasure to find out that Wizz Air airline will start operating flights from Kukës Airport “Zayed – Wings of the North” towards European destinations. The new Kukës Airport was planned to be a low cost airport from the beginning, when this strategic investment was brought to life. Therefore, Wizz Air starting to fly from Kukës to Austria, Switzerland and two destinations in Germany is a very important news for Albanians who want to travel low cost. I believe that with the precious tradition the  company has established in the market, they will be able to offer passengers a pleasurable flying experience, as the modern Wizz Air planes take off from the lands in the north of Albania.

Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ Director of Networks and Alliances said: “After over 20 months of travel restrictions we know our customers are looking for new and exciting places to visit, so the addition of this route to our short-haul network ahead of the summer season is perfect timing for anyone who would like to plan their trips for the year ahead.

“Nuremburg offers something for everyone, ranging from sightseeing in the sunshine to exploring the German markets at Christmas, so we hope our customers take full advantage of this new destination to our network.”

British Airways’ return flights to Nuremberg will start from £69 in Euro Traveller and £202 in Club Europe. Or customers can use Avios as part payment, £59 plus 1,000 Avios or £72 plus 24,500 Avios* in Euro Traveller and Club Europe respectively.

Customers travelling in the airline’s Euro Traveller (economy) cabin can pre-purchase items from the Speedbird Café, in advance of travel, or can order additional snacks and drinks on board the flight directly to their seat using their mobile device.

The airline’s customers travelling in Club Europe (business class) have access to priority check in, lounges and restaurant style complimentary dining, including items from the airline’s ‘Best of British’ menus.

British Airways new flights

Last month, British Airways CityFlyer also announced new short-haul routes from London City to Luxembourg, Barcelona, Guernsey, Jersey, Milan and Thessaloniki operating from March 2022. The airline has also relaunched new gateways to the US, through the Atlantic Joint Business, such as London to Portland and Barcelona to Los Angeles as well as the addition of the islands of São Miguel and Terceira to British Airways’ Heathrow short-haul network launching this summer.

Notes to Editors:

  • The airline plans to initially operate 4 flights per week on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays starting on the 27 March 2022, and then intends to increase the schedule to 6 per week starting from 1 May 2022 and 4 times a week in winter (30 October 2022 – 25 March 2023).
  • Flights will be operating from London Heathrow Terminal 3.
  • *Prices are correct as of 27 January, British Airways T&Cs apply and prices are subject to change without notice.

February 3, 2022 – AirAsia X, Malaysia’s low-cost long-haul airline, has announced the restart of flights between Sydney and Kuala Lumpur on February 14.

AirAsia X Restarts Services To Sydney

The move comes after the end of an $8.1 billion restructuring process, with the carrier stating that it will prioritise full redemptions for passengers affected by cancellations. Flights will initially operate once per week, with fares starting at $399 one way or $1,299 in the Premium Flatbed cabin.

Flights will be operated weekly on Mondays from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney, returning on Tuesdays, beginning 14 February 2022 and to 22 March 2022.

Fares from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur start at AU$399 and AU$1,299 one-way all-inclusive of check-in baggage, one meal and one drink.

AirAsia X has stated that it will prioritise complete redemptions for travellers affected by the restructuring. The airline guests may rebook their flights and use their credit cards to do so.

The autumn/winter schedules will be announced in mid-February.

“Following our travel downtime over the last two years, and the recent completion of our restructuring process, we are thrilled to be able to relaunch and commence our gradual return to the skies, said Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X.

“This would not have been possible without the overwhelming support from our guests and creditors, and we thank them for their patience and understanding.

“Without any domestic routes, Air Asia X has been significantly affected by the pandemic. We now see light at the end of this long tunnel, and we are working hard to operate again in all our key markets, as one of the world’s leading low-cost medium-haul operators.

“Starting with flights to and from Sydney, we will progressively continue to honour outstanding bookings and Credit Accounts for our guests and creditors in other markets as soon as possible,” he said.

Fully vaccinated Australian citizens, permanent residents, international students, and eligible visa holders can travel to and from Australia without applying for a travel exemption.

Qantas Offers Nonstop Luxury to London and New York 2026

February 2, 2022  – Qantas will resume its daily nonstop service from Perth to London, from 27 March.

Qantas To Re-Launch Perth-London Nonstop Service

Due to restrictions imposed in Western Australia, the relaunch was delayed. However, the move had been anticipated earlier.

As a result, Qantas has used Darwin as an alternate departure airport.

It will be the same 236-seat B787-9s with 42 business class, 28 premium economy seats and 165 regular economy seats used for the flight.

The service which commences on 27 March, will be operated with the following schedules. Flights are now on sale.

  • QF10 departs London Heathrow at 1155, arriving in Perth at 1140 the following day. Flight time is 16 hours 45 minutes.
  • QF9 departs Perth at 1850, arriving in London Heathrow at 0505 the next day. Flight time is 17 hours 15 minutes.

Qantas has been flying nonstop to London since 2018 and plans to establish nonstop Sydney-London flights as part of Project Sunrise in the coming years.

Qantas had chosen the Airbus A350-1000 to fly nonstop from Sydney to London or Sydney to the rest of Europe in 2019.

However, due to the pandemic, the launch of a nonstop flight from Sydney to London has been put on hold.

Qantas must offer nonstop flights to Europe to compete with the several indirect airlines that operated over the kangaroo route before the pandemic.

Due to the pandemic, more changes remain possible and any limitations that governments may enforce.
