January 21, Ryanair has announced its largest ever summer schedule from Dublin Airport, with 120 destinations and over 900 weekly flights available to customers.

Ryanair unveils largest ever Dublin schedule

The schedule includes sunny getaways to Spain, Portugal and Italy.

The carrier also confirmed it will create 30 direct jobs as a result of adding an additional aircraft to the Dublin-based fleet.

With an additional 22 routes compared with summer 2019, Ryanair said its Dublin schedule is a direct result of the recently launched Traffic Recovery Scheme from airport operator daa.

With many airlines cutting capacity and routes this summer, the carrier said Ireland must lower access costs as it competes with regions and airports in other EU countries for a diminished pool of carriers.

Ryanair chief executive, Eddie Wilson, said: “After two years of stop/start ineffective travel restrictions, the daa have finally been given the tools to incentivise travel with its Traffic Recovery Support Scheme (TRSS) which was recommended by the aviation task force to government in their report of July 2020.

“This scheme gives Ryanair the confidence to invest in our largest ever summer schedule and largest number of based aircraft at Dublin Airport.

“The daa TRSS scheme will ensure airport charges are competitively priced versus other EU countries this summer, and Ryanair have responded by launching its largest ever investment in aircraft, connections and jobs at Dublin Airport.”

January 19, 2022 -International travel chaos worldwide – BA, Japan Airlines and Emirates scramble to RESUME Boeing 777 flights after rollout was suspended near airports

International travel chaos

AT&T and Verizon have launched their 5G network across America, turning on 4,500 new towers
The network has not yet launched near some US airports due to concerns over safety

The telecoms giants agreed at the last minute on Tuesday to halt the rollout near those airports. By the time they did, international airlines had already canceled dozens of flights that were scheduled.

They were particularly worried about Boeing 777 planes which were considered most at risk.

Now, the airlines are scrambling to reverse that decision because it is still safe for the planes to fly.
The chaotic back-and-forth is trickling into other flights, causing travel headaches at airports overseas
Air India, Emirates, Japan Airlines and All Nippon all canceled flights scheduled for Wednesday.

British Airways had put passengers due to fly on 777 flights onto different aircraft to get around the fears
AT&T and Verizon are demanding to know why the FAA has not yet found a way to operate 5G safely.
The frequencies the towers work on could interfere with the frequencies used by altimeters on planes
The altimeters tell pilots how far they are from the ground when they are landing and are crucial to safety

Qantas returns to South Africa for the 1st time in 2 years

airline news

Qantas returns to South Africa for the 1st time in 2 years

blank

blank

blank

January 11, 2022 – Qantas returns to South Africa for the 1st time in 2 years

Qantas flight QF63 departed Sydney and is expected to land at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport in January 2022.

This flight marks the resumption of direct passenger flights between South Africa and Australia after a 21-month break.

The airline will operate three weekly flights on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

Qantas’ restart coincides with Australia easing its restrictions on South African travellers.

Qantas Airways flight QF63 is scheduled to land at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday afternoon. This is the first direct commercial passenger flight between Australia and South Africa in more than 21 months.

Australia has been largely off-limits to South Africans since coronavirus-induced travel restrictions were first imposed in March 2020. Australians looking to travel abroad have also been limited due to Qantas’ grounding of international flights and strict re-entry requirements.

Almost 200,000 South Africans live in Australia, making it the second largest expat community second only to the United Kingdom. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, more than 110,000 annual travellers arrived in South Africa from Australia, many to reconnect with family and friends.

Qantas had initially hoped to resume its flights between Sydney and Johannesburg in July 2021, but consecutive waves of Covid-19, the prevalence of new variants, and heightened restrictions in response, extended the suspension. The July return date was pushed back to October, then December, and, more recently, to April 2022.

Australia’s financially embattled flag carrier eventually reopened its international routes in November, starting with flights to London, Los Angeles, and Singapore.

The airline also revised its South African restart date to January. This coincided with Australia dropping its restrictions on South African travellers in mid-December. This reprieve mainly applies to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and eligible visa holders – for skilled migrants, international students, and family – departing South Africa.

Qantas’ Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner – flight QF63 – departed Sydney around 10:45 (Australian Eastern Daylight Time) on Tuesday. The 11,000km flight takes around 14 hours to complete and, at the time of publication, flight QF63 was around 3,500km away from Johannesburg. It’s estimated to land at 15:30.

The airline will operate three weekly return flights between Sydney and Johannesburg on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Demand for these flights is extremely high, according to Simple Flying.

And while Australia has reopened to eligible international travellers, territories differ on testing and quarantine requirements. Travellers arriving in Sydney need to comply with the New South Wales rules, which requires a negative Covid-19 rapid antigen test result and full vaccination to avoid quarantine.

Travelling from New South Wales to Queensland, for example, requires another negative Covid-19 test result and an approved entry pass.

January 6, 2022 – airBaltic builds use of sustainable aviation fuel

airBaltic increased the amount of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) used in its operations by a fifth last year.

This has been achieved in cooperation with Neste and other fuel providers on the airBaltic network.

The collaboration with Neste started recently when airBaltic fuelled the first flight using an allocation of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Martin Gauss, chief executive of airBaltic, said: “Our vision sees us becoming a sustainable carrier in the EU aviation market.

“At airBaltic, we believe that SAF will play a crucial role in ensuring the future of the aviation industry and help everyone involved to decrease their impact on the environment.

“Our use of SAF will increase further in 2022 and beyond.”

On December 28th, airBaltic flight BT302 from Helsinki to Riga was performed with an allocation of 37 per cent of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel and 63 per cent of conventional fossil jet fuel.

It was thus far the highest proportion of SAF used by airBaltic in a single flight.

Tuomas Kulola, head of sales at marketing and services, Neste, added: “Neste is committed to help the aviation industry to reach its climate goals. We have developed a drop-in solution that is readily available and provides an immediate solution for reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of flying.

“All solutions are needed, and every step is important.”

Air France and KLM flights to Buenos Aires from January 2022

The Air France KLM Group will increase flight frequencies from Paris and Amsterdam to Buenos Aires to five weeks.

Flights between Ezeiza and Charles de Gaulle Airport in the French capital will be increased from 3 to 5 from January 10.

Air France, which currently operates three weekly passenger flights, will add two flights from January 10, linking Buenos Aires with Paris five times a week.

KLM, meanwhile, which currently operates four weekly passenger flights, will add a frequency in February, connecting Buenos Aires with Amsterdam five times a week.

The operation in this regime is confirmed until March, according to the authorizations of Argentina, and subject to modifications, specify the airlines.

From Argentina, “Air France and KLM offer connections via Paris and Amsterdam to more than 250 destinations around the world; the applicable health requirements are exclusively those of the final destination, which simplifies the connection, “they indicate.

For example, they point out, “if a person travels from Argentina to Spain or Italy as a final destination, they must meet the sanitary conditions required in Spain or Italy only, since the sanitary requirements of France and the Netherlands do not apply to connections.”

Before traveling, airlines recommend that their customers contact the relevant authorities of their countries of departure, destination and transit to verify entry and stay requirements.

To check the health and migration requirements of your destination and transit countries, consult the Air France or KLM Traveldoc sites.

Electric air taxis

Electric air taxis

December 29, 2021 – Electric air taxis

The two largest U.S. regional carriers have made a commitment to buying electric air taxis.

On Tuesday, Indianapolis-based Republic Airways said it has signed a nonbinding letter of intent to purchase up to 200 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from Embraer-controlled Eve Air Mobility.

Electric air taxis for SkyWest and Republic Airways

In addition, SkyWest announced that it has signed a nonbinding letter of intent for the purchase of up to 100 Eve aircraft.

Both airlines said the partnerships will also focus on the development of air taxi networks in key U.S. markets.

Republic said it will focus on developing such networks on the East Coast and in the central U.S., with an initial emphasis on Boston, New York and Washington, D.C.

SkyWest was less specific, saying only that it and Eve had committed to optimizing eVTOL service in key cities that are early adopters. In so doing, SkyWest and Eve plan to focus on airport specifications and a roadmap for certification of Eve’s eVTOL craft.

Financial muscle for eVOTL

Tuesday’s announcements came as Eve revealed that it will take the company public on the New York Stock Exchange in combination with Zanite Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). The public company will trade as Eve Holding and Embraer will have an 82% equity stake.

Eve has provided few details on the eVTOL craft it has under development. But Republic and SkyWest are far from its lone airline partners. The company has lined up 15 other launch partners, including Fort Lauderdale-based aircraft lessor Azorra, which also announced its intent Tuesday to purchase up to 200 Eve craft.

SkyWest operates regional flights for Delta, United, American and Alaska Airlines, while Republic operates regional flights for Delta, United and American. Among U.S. carriers, they join United, American, JetBlue and regional carrier Mesa Airlines, each of which has invested in eVTOL craft, made tentative purchase commitments or both.

Airlines that are supporting eVTOL development tout its possibilities for easing commutes to and from major airports, as well as the environmental benefits of electric-powered transport.
