First Lufthansa Boeing 787 lands at Frankfurt Airport

September 01, 2022 –

Build-up of 787 fleet starts with today’s addition of D-ABPA – a total of 31 more 787 deliveries expected by 2027

After a long wait, Lufthansa received its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, registered under the registration number D-ABPA and christened «Berlin»: This new generation of aircraft will allow the airline to replace its old Airbus A340s.

Lufthansa Boeing

The company’s first 787 took off from Paine Field Airport (PAE) at 16:28 local time under flight «LH9921» and will land in Frankfurt (FRA), the airline’s main hub. This is the first 787-9 from the factory to be delivered to an airline, following the resumption of Dreamliner deliveries in August this year.

In 2019, Lufthansa Group placed the order for 20 787-9s as part of its intercontinental fleet renewal plan, over the years the order increased to 32 units to be distributed among the group’s airlines, Lufthansa will be the first operator and will base this model at its hub in Frankfurt.

The first five Dreamliners of the largest German airline operator came from Hainan Airlines, which were later transferred to Vistara and finally taken over by Lufthansa after negotiations with Boeing due to delays in the 777-9X program. These first aircraft are powered by General Electric engines, the other 27 units will be equipped with Rolls-Royce engines and are expected to enter the fleet in 2023.

The German carrier’s first five 787s will have the same cabin as Hainan Airlines’ aircraft, which include 26 Business Class seats (1-2-1) of Collins Aerospace’s Super Diamond model, 21 Premium Economy seats and 247 seats in Economy.

The remaining Dreamliners will have the new Business Class and Premium Economy group products incorporated, the latter of which debuted this year on SWISS Boeing 777-300ERs and is expected to be installed on Boeing 777-9Xs, Airbus A350s, Boeing 747-8i and Airbus A330-300s.

Lufthansa also expects to take delivery in the coming weeks of the second Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which is registered under the registration number D-ABPD and christened «Frankfurt am Main».

The remaining aircraft to be delivered tentatively by the last quarter of this year and early 2023 are as follows: D-ABPB, D-ABPC and D-ABPE. This 787 sub-fleet has an average age of 3 years, as these units were kept in storage awaiting a new customer.

At the end of 2021, the German airline revealed that the first international destination for the Dreamliner would be Toronto – Pearson (YYZ), for the moment Lufthansa has not announced the schedule for these new aircraft.

Korean Air to launch Budapest route and resume flights to Dubai, Phuket and Chiang Mai

Korean Air

Korean Air to launch Budapest route and resume flights to Dubai, Phuket and Chiang Mai

August 31, 2022 –

Korean Air will launch its inaugural flight to Budapest, Hungary from October 3. The airline will operate a 269-seat Boeing 787-900 once a week on Mondays departing from Seoul Incheon at 11:25 am and landing in Budapest at 5:05 pm. The return flight leaves the next day at 7:15 pm and arrives in Seoul Incheon one day later at 12:50 pm. There will also be an extra flight on Saturday October 29.

Korean Air

From October 31, Korean Air will offer flights twice a week that depart from Seoul Incheon at 12:25 pm on Mondays and Saturdays and arrive in Budapest at 5:15 pm. The returning flights will take off on the same day at 7:35 pm and land in Seoul Incheon at 2:15 pm the next day.

Following the launch of cargo services to Budapest in February 2020, Korean Air plans to bolster the competitiveness of its European network, especially in Eastern Europe.

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is a UNESCO World Heritage site with a rich history and beautiful landscapes. The city is famous for its night view and major tourist attractions such as Fisherman’s Bastion, Buda Castle and the Hungarian Parliament Building. Not only is there high travel demand for tourists, but also for businesses. The Hungarian government’s investment policy in the car manufacturing industry has attracted many Korean companies to Hungary, bringing much business related travel demand.

Resuming routes to Dubai
From October 1, Korean Air will resume its routes to the United Arab Emirates and Thailand, which have been suspended since March 2020.

Korean Air will restore its Middle East network by resuming services to Dubai three times a week. The Incheon-Dubai route will be served by the airline’s A330-300 fleet, and will depart from Seoul Incheon every Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 1:20 pm and arrive in Dubai at 6:55 pm. The return flight will depart on the same day at 11:00 pm and arrive in Seoul Incheon at 12:40 pm the following day.

Dubai, known for its sightseeing attractions and luxury shopping, is a fascinating destination for those planning a vacation in the winter season. As the only Middle Eastern city served by Korean carriers, Dubai is also expected to be a major gateway to the Middle East for Korean travelers.
Resuming routes to Phuket and Chiang Mai
The airline will also resume services to Phuket, a popular honeymoon destination in Thailand. The flights will depart from Seoul Incheon on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 5:55 pm and land in Phuket at 10:00 pm. Return flights leave Phuket on the same day at 11:20 pm and arrive in Seoul Incheon at 7:55 am the next day.

Phuket is popular with sun seekers looking to enjoy the destination’s sandy beaches and a wide range of water activities in its blue waters that are famous for stunningly colorful corals and marine life.

Korean Air is also reinstating flights to Chiang Mai with a Boeing 737-800. The airline will offer four flights a week – every Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday – departing from Seoul Incheon at 5:55 pm and arriving in Chiang Mai at 9:30 pm. The return flights leave Chiang Mai at 11:00 pm and arrive in Seoul Incheon at 6:25 am the following day.

Chiang Mai is a city located in a mountainous area 500 meters above sea level, and it maintains a pleasant temperature of more than five degrees lower than other cities in Thailand. You can enjoy an exceptional trip such as relaxing in a quiet, rural setting away from the city for a month. The city is also well known for golf tourists who flock here to avoid the cold winter weather.

Korean Air will continue to closely monitor the market and return of demand, and reinstate our remaining suspended routes accordingly.

Qantas Sydney to Tonga – weekly flights to this tropical destination

Qantas Sydney to Tonga

Qantas Sydney to Tonga

August 23, 2022 – Qantas Sydney to Tonga – weekly flights to this tropical destination

Qantas is expanding its South Pacific presence with the addition of Tonga to its network, offering a new tropical destination for Australian travellers to explore.

Qantas Sydney to Tonga

Following the recent reopening of Tonga’s borders, Qantas will fly weekly between Sydney and Nuku’alofa’s Fua’amotu Airport. The four and a half hour flights will be the only direct services between Australia and Tonga.

Qantas has been operating services since December 2020, supported by the Australian Government’s Pacific Flights Program. These flights have maintained critical passenger and freight links while international borders were closed. From today, passengers can book a flight directly on qantas.com with services operating every Thursday to Tonga.

Qantas Sydney to Tonga: The inclusion of Tonga to the international network follows the recent commitment of weekly services to Samoa as Qantas grows its presence in the South Pacific Islands off the back of strong holiday travel demand.

Qantas will initially operate one flight a week with a A330 aircraft between Tonga and Sydney alongside the Samoa service.

Qantas Sydney to Tonga are on sale at Qantas.com starting from $866 return.  Qantas Frequent Flyers can earn and redeem Qantas Points on Tonga flights as well as earn status credits.

Quotes from a Qantas spokesperson

“Since the opening of Australia’s border, we have seen strong demand across our Qantas operated South Pacific services. In fact, Fiji is 50 per cent higher than pre-COVID demand, Noumea is 13 per cent higher and flights to Samoa are performing ahead of expectations.

“These flights will help Australian-based South Pacific Islanders visit family and friends back home, as well as providing travel hungry Australians a choice of Pacific neighbours to explore.

“We anticipate the Tonga services will be well-supported by both Tongan nationals and Australians and are excited to help strengthen family and community connections as well as boost tourism opportunities to this beautiful Pacific Island kingdom.”

International flights are subject to government and regulatory approval.

American Airlines has ordered 20 Boom Overture supersonic jets

American Airlines has ordered 20 Boom Overture supersonic jets

American Airlines has ordered 20 Boom Overture supersonic jets

American Airlines has ordered 20 of Boom Supersonic’s Overture planes, with an option for 40 more. Overture is estimated to fly up to 80 passengers in an all-business class cabin at a top speed of Mach 1.7. The company, which already has a prototype, recently redesigned the jet for better efficiency and reduced noise.

Boom Supersonic is a Colorado-based startup that’s leading the development of supersonic aircraft to usher in a new era of commercial air travel. In June 2021, it partnered with United Airlines, which ordered 15 of Boom’s $200 million aircraft, Overture, with an option for 35 more. The deal is worth $3 billion.

The planes won’t begin carrying passengers until at least the end of the decade, aiming to fill a void left when the Concorde stopped flying in 2003. Building on earlier commitments by United Airlines Holdings Inc. and Japan Airlines Co., American’s deal expands the supersonic startup’s tally to 35 orders and 130 pre-orders and options. The planes sell for $200 million each, the company said previously.

“What we’re really seeing is that supersonic’s back, and it’s back in a mainstream way,” Blake Scholl, founder and chief executive officer of Boom Technology Inc., said in an interview.

Boom is designing Overture to carry 65 to 80 passengers at speeds of Mach 1.7 over water, double that of conventional jetliners, with a range of 4,250 nautical miles (7,871 km). Travelers would be whisked from Los Angeles to Honolulu in three hours, or Miami to London in a little under five hours.

Scholl is aiming for a broader customer base than the Concorde, which catered to celebrities and the ultrawealthy with tickets that cost as much as four times the price of a typical first-class fare at the time. Only 14 of the pioneering supersonic jets were ever built. Boom’s sales have already doubled that tally, and Scholl says a new partnership for a militarized version with Northrop Grumman Corp. could yield potentially hundreds of orders.

The Denver-based manufacturer plans to run its aircraft on 100% sustainable aviation fuel, a selling point for passengers worried about climate change. But it’s said little about who will make the cleaner engines that will power its aircraft.

“We’re going to make a significant announcement in the next few months,” Scholl said. “And it’s not just about engine technology, it’s also about the engine business model. There’s a lot of opportunity for innovation there.”

Iberia flights to Mexico

Iberia is finalising its 2022-2023 winter programme -from 30 October to 25 March 2023- and continues to work on resuming its entire network of flights and destinations.

For this winter, the airline scheduled the same capacity that it offered before the pandemic, thanks, above all, to the relaunch of its last remaining routes in Latin America (Rio de Janeiro and Caracas), to its commitment to the US market and to a greater deployment of flights in its short- and medium-haul network.

In Mexico, Iberia will recover 100% of its pre-pandemic capacity and will add four weekly frequencies to its current offer, bringing it up to 21 weekly frequencies, which represents more than 300,000 seats.

With three daily flights, Mexico City will be the metropolis with the most frequencies of all the Spanish airline’s destinations, showing its firm commitment to this strategic market and reinforcing its leadership in Latin America.

The flight schedules will be:

In Mexico, thanks to the recent codeshare agreement with the Mexican company Viva Aerobus, Iberia expanded its network of connections within the country to 19 other cities including Guadalajara, Cancún, Monterrey, Veracruz, Mérida, Tampico, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Tijuana, Hermosillo, Oaxaca, Huatulco, Torreón, Puerto Escondido, Ciudad Juárez, La Paz, Chetumal and Mazatlán.

Greater Connectivity with More than 100 Destinations in Europe

The increase in flights between Spain and Mexico will contribute to the flow of travellers and will improve connectivity on both sides of the Atlantic.

In its winter programme, Iberia will increase its routes in Spain and Europe, which will also enable passengers to connect with more than a hundred European cities.

For example, in Europe it will expand its services in several cities such as Milan, Rome, Lisbon, Brussels, Bordeaux and Geneva, and it will continue with its commitment to Funchal and Madeira, perfect destinations throughout the year.

In Spain, Iberia, Iberia Express and Iberia Regional/Air Nostrum will offer a flight programme focused on business traffic and on the Balearic and Canary Islands. In the winter season, Iberia will resume all its Madrid-Barcelona Air Shuttle flights, with 87 weekly frequencies and up to 15 daily flights in each direction.

On Board the Most Advanced Aircraft on the Market, the Airbus A-350

Since June 2020, Iberia has been operating this route with state-of-the-art Airbus A-350/900 aircraft, providing its passengers with all the features and improvements offered by the quietest aircraft on the market -equipped with two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines– and 35% greater fuel consumption efficiency.

With 348 seats 31 in Business class, 24 in Premium Economy and 293 in Economy– this aircraft model boasts high-speed Wi-Fi, panoramic windows, wider aisles and higher ceilings, conferring a greater sense of space, and an air-renewal system that improves the humidity levels on board by 11 to 16%.

Renewed In-Flight Experience

Each passenger is unique, and each trip is different, which is why in 2022 Iberia continues to work to offer its clients a personalised experience that anticipates their needs, offering new features and self-management options.

In June, the airline introduced its new in-flight meals by the DO & CO catering service, always with a firm commitment to sustainability and digitisation.

Iberia’s new digital concierge, available on its website, allows passengers to check out their flight’s meal options before travelling and once they are on board.

Another new service is free messaging throughout their flight for members of the Iberia Plus loyalty programme and those travelling in the Business Cabin.

Additionally, the airline debuted its new uniforms, designed by Teresa Helbig, continuing with its support of Spanish talent. TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal sees massive 526% increase in traffic between Europe and Brazil

TAP Air Portugal sees massive 526% increase in traffic between Europe and Brazil

August 11, 2022 –

TAP Air Portugal (TAP) experienced a massive 526% increase in customers carried between Europe and Brazil in the first six months of 2022, compared to the previous year.

TAP Air Portugal

The Portuguese flag carrier flew more than 640,000 customers on more than 3,100 flights, grabbing nearly a third (28%) of the whole market share of all customers flown between Europe and Brazil.

The new figures bolster the airline’s position as the leading carrier between Europe and Brazil.

During the first half of 2022 it operated 3,129 flights and was the third largest international airline in the number of take-offs, representing a huge increase of 130% compared to the same period in 2021.

This summer, TAP will operate 76 flights a week between Portugal and Brazil, the largest number of flights by a foreign airline flying to Brazil.

Ricardo Dinis, TAP Country Manager for the UK & Ireland, said: “Brazil is a core market for TAP and as the main international airline linking Europe and Brazil, we have matched the soaring customer demand with a significant boost in flights during the last six months.

“Portugal’s popularity as a gateway to Brazil continues to rise and our 86% capacity levels, compared to pre-pandemic flights, is an indication that TAP is increasing its market share.

“We are attracting more and more customers to fly to our extensive Brazilian destinations, many of which we are the only European carrier offering transatlantic connections.

“With a wide network of more than ninety destinations worldwide, the continued strengthening of TAP’s transatlantic frequencies is a strong sign of our continued recovery.”

TAP connects Europe to 11 cities in Brazil from its Lisbon hub, flying to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belém, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Fortaleza, Natal, Maceió, Porto Alegre, Recife and Salvador. The airline also connects Porto with São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
TAP Air Portugal is the flag carrier of Portugal, based at Lisbon Airport and serves over 90 destinations across three continent.

Established in 1945, the European carrier has been a member of Star Alliance since 2005 and offers customers seamless connections through their Lisbon hub to destinations around the world, thanks to their highly-popular Portugal stopover programme.

Currently, TAP connects Portugal with three destinations in the United Kingdom – London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Manchester – as well as offering flights to the Irish capital, Dublin.

The airline, which boasts one of the youngest fleets in Europe, currently operates a mix of short-haul and long-haul Airbus aircraft, from the state-of-the-art A330neo to the game changing single-aisle A321neoLR.

The carrier’s regional arm also operates a fleet of ATR and Embraer aircraft for those travelling a shorter distance.

Air India increases international flights to Canada

August 11, 2022 –

Air India will increase flights from Delhi to Vancouver, Canada, from three weekly to daily starting 31 August. The airline says the flight increase is a response to growing traffic between India and Canada, plus the return to service of the widebody Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft featuring a three-class configuration; first, business and economy.

Air India international flights

Air India, following its acquisition by Tata Group, is now deploying aircraft that were grounded for prolonged periods due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other reasons.

“The progressive restoration of these aircraft allows Air India to increase schedule resilience and support frequency and network increases over the coming months,” the airline said.

“This increase in our frequency between Delhi and Vancouver is very welcome for many reasons. It is another sign of recovery from the pandemic and caters to strong customer demand. More importantly, it marks the first step in restoring Air India’s fleet and international network,” said Air India MD and CEO Campbell Wilson.

JetBlue Boston to London service

August 8, 2022 –

JetBlue has announced it has officially launched service from Boston’s Logan International Airport (BOS) to London’s Gatwick Airport (LGW). JetBlue’s daily nonstop service is part of the airline’s focus city strategy and its long-term transatlantic growth plans. London was the largest nonstop market not currently served by JetBlue from Boston and is among the most requested destinations from the airline’s large Boston customer base.

JetBlue Boston to London service

Last year, JetBlue launched its first-ever transatlantic service from New York-JFK to both Heathrow and Gatwick, London’s largest and busiest airports. The carrier plans to grow its transatlantic presence this year with new service from Boston Logan to London’s Heathrow Airport, launching September 20, 2022, and an additional Gatwick departure from New York starting October 29, 2022. Between JetBlue’s New York and Boston focus cities, the airline will offer five daily flights between the U.S. and the U.K. by October. JetBlue Boston to London service

“Our London service from New York has been an incredible success and we are thrilled to finally bring this highly anticipated service to our Boston customers, a route that has long suffered from high fares by legacy carriers,” said Robin Hayes, chief executive officer, JetBlue. “As Boston’s largest carrier, adding this nonstop service to Gatwick will only make us more relevant in our New England focus city and introduce JetBlue to a largely unserved market.”

“We are excited to welcome JetBlue’s first transatlantic service from Boston to London Gatwick,” said Massport CEO, Lisa Wieland. “We thank JetBlue for their continued partnership, and we look forward to the additional travel opportunities this will generate for our passengers.”

“We are thrilled that JetBlue is launching nonstop service between London and Boston. Visitors from the United Kingdom represent our top overseas source market,” said Martha Sheridan, Greater Boston CVB President & CEO. “Rebuilding this segment will be critical to the overall recovery of our visitor economy. We share many historical and cultural bonds with the UK and are so excited that JetBlue is investing in this route, which will surely be a great success!”

“We are delighted to welcome the launch of JetBlue’s new service between Boston and London. Demand for travel to the UK has returned to pre-pandemic levels, and the additional connectivity from Boston, a vital US market, will make it even easier for Americans looking to book their next trip over. As we head into the beautiful Autumn season, whether visitors are returning or discovering the UK for the first time, now is the perfect time to explore another side of Britain, filled with buzzing cities, exciting outdoor adventures, and iconic landmarks with a modern twist,” said Paul Gauger, VisitBritain’s Senior Vice President for the Americas.
