Going for gold by Jaapjan

GO FOR GOLD

Winning is everything at the 2020 Olympics Games as we’ve seen recently with scenes such as the lovely emotional outbreak of the winning Indonesian badminton mix double.

If you missed it watch here….

However, let’s not forget that partaking is even more important than winning.

Returning to a current much debated hot topic, there is an apparent parallel with covid vaccination distribution.

Western countries are all competing to do one better than each other or being the fastest or best at the distribution of vaccines, but often don’t realize that the only solution to getting safe travel back is to convince all countries worldwide, especially developing countries, to partake in the fast vaccination distribution in equally timely manner together.  Its up to each country to support the other rather than to compete.

A side effect of this support is to surely see a reduction in the chances of new virus strains being developed.

Surely then we should be revisiting the idea of green, orange, and red lighting entire regions and countries.

I think that hospitalization occupancy should be the determining factor when it comes to these colours rather than the number of infections, and testing should be done on entry into a country instead of an automatic quarantine. If this was the case, I’d expect travel restrictions worldwide could be restored.

If we consider this more carefully, we’d all be winners and could celebrate a global success together.

No-one wants to come second in the global race for gold!

Next month I’ll be looking at the start of Champions League season

The new list of banned countries is set to feature only Bulgaria, Brazil, Georgia, Mexico, Spain and Turkey.

To travel to one of these places, Israelis must fill out a form online and receive special permission from the Exceptions Committee.

Travel news from around the world

Saudi Arabia

Once a stop along the Incense Route providing a corridor between the East and West, Saudi Arabia’s AlUla has now permanently opened to the public. Forecast as one of Saudi Arabia’s most exciting sites as the country continues to position itself as an exciting tourism destination, AlUla is once again set to be a culturally rich meeting point for people from around the globe.

For the moment, overnight accommodation options are limited to a handful of glamping sites and hotels, but that’s set to change in the coming years, with the arrival of some global big-hitting brands. By 2035 AlUla’s expected to have more than 9400 rooms, with each luxury resort providing its own unique take on desert luxury.

Habitas AlUla
Opening October 2021

habitas alula desert resort

Millennial-focused Habitas, which began life as a brand that brought a like-minded community of travellers together around immersive events, will open an 100-room, luxury eco resort in the desert canyons of Ashar Valley next year. Self-described as a brand that prioritises “human connection and experiences over the traditional luxury experience of five-star hotels”, Habitas’ AlUla resort will consciously blend seamlessly into its desert surroundings, offering visitors historical and cultural experiences to immerse them into the authentic heritage and otherworldly environment of Ashar Valley and the wider AlUla region. The first phase of the resort will open in the first quarter of 2021, when 50 rooms will begin welcoming guests. Further phases are scheduled for completion later next year.

Saudi Arabia’s first Banyan Tree resort will take shape at the Kingdom’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, AlUla, opening for visitors next year. Accor will rebrand and extend the existing Ashar Resort, transforming the property into a high-end desert resort of 82 luxury villas, a plush spa and a number of gourmet dining options. A homage to the heritage site, each of the villas will be ruled by a neutral, natural palette, ensuring it blends seamlessly into the Ashar valley.

Aman AlUla and Janu AlUla
Opening: 2022/3

True to the pioneering spirit of Aman, the luxury brand will bring three new resorts to AlUla, each offering a chance to discover the region’s magnificent unspoilt natural landscapes and archaeological sites, which have long remained undiscovered. As with their previous resorts, Aman will work diligently to preserve the archaeological sites in AlUla and ensure a seamless blending of their properties with the surrounding nature. Each of the three new properties has a different personality for different kinds of vacationers. One with a spectacular ranch-style desert resort to live out your Lone Ranger fantasies, another a luxurious tented camp to awaken the childlike adventurer within you, and a third that revels in simple beauty neighbouring AlUla’s heritage areas. In a bid to expand its global appeal and make the brand more accessible, Aman launched its more affordable sister brand Janu last year, and one of the brand’s three debut resorts will take shape in Saudi’s enigmatic AlUla.

Sharaan by Jean Nouvel
Opening: 2024

Sharaan by Jean Nouvel AlUla

Acclaimed architect Jean Nouvel’s extraordinary Sharaan by Jean Nouvel resort, sustainably carved out of the multi-million year old rocks, is set to be unlike any other. Set to open in 2024, the resort will feature 40 guest suites and three resort villas, plus a retreat summit centre near the resort will be home to 14 private pavilions. Designs draw on the nearby Nabataean wonders of the ancient city of Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, and pay tribute to its 2,000-year-old architectural legacy. Though much of the resort will focus on AlUla’s natural landscape and ancient heritage, guests can also expect degrees of modernity laced throughout. Public spaces promise a focus on enjoying the natural environment from day to night, guest rooms embrace the natural colours and materials of AlUla, and a scenic express lift will bring guests to the heart of the resort, allowing them to travel through millions of years of geological stratas.

What’s cooking in Las Vegas? Yardbird

blank

What’s cooking? World recipes

what is cooking - recipe Italy

In the Deep South of the United States, yardbird is a colloquialism for the domestic chicken. In one explanation for American saxophonist Charlie Parker’s nickname being “Yardbird”, jazz trombonist and blues singer Clyde E. B. Bernhardt in his autobiography I Remember: Eighty Years of Black Entertainment, Big Bands, states:

Parker told me he got the name Yardbird because he was crazy about eating chicken: fried, baked, boiled, stewed, anything. He liked it. Down there in the South, all chickens are called yardbirds. Every house has some.

Jazz pianist Jay McShann backs up the story in an interview in 1999:

Charlie yelled, ‘Back up. You hit a yardbird!’ He got out of the car and got it and carried the chicken on into Lincoln. He had it cooked and ate it all in one sitting.

Ingredients

How to make it

  • Rinse chicken under cold water. Pat dry with paper towels. Cut chicken into 9 pieces (2 legs, 2 thighs, 2 breasts, 2 wings, and 1 or 2 pieces from the back). Combine the flour, salt and pepper in a large paper bag.
  • Add enough oil to a 2-inch-deep cast iron skillet to come 2/3 up sides of skillet (about 2 cups of oil). Heat oil over medium-high heat until deep-fry thermometer registers 350 degrees F. Add 2 chicken pieces to flour mixture in bag; fold bag to enclose. Shake until chicken is well-coated. Transfer coated chicken pieces to rack. Repeat with remaining chicken pieces.
  • Using tongs, carefully add chicken legs and thighs to hot oil. Fry until chicken is golden on the outside, and chicken is cooked through, about 4 minutes per side. Transfer fried chicken to clean dry towels on rack to drain. Repeat with remaining breast, wing and back pieces (breasts will be done in about 3 minutes per side). Sprinkle fried chicken with salt and pepper. Transfer to platter and serve immediately.
  • NOTE:
  • For a crispier crust, mix 2 large eggs with 1 tablespoon water in large bowl. Add the chicken pieces and soak them before coating with flour mixture.

Safe travel by bus or train

Public passenger transport is performed under the regular schedule. Certain recommendations need to be respected when using buses and trains. Use public transport only if you are healthy or have no signs of respiratory infection.

The driver, train staff and passengers must wear protective face masks.

Disinfect your hands upon entry and it is recommended that you do the same upon exit.

Observe the appropriate 1.5-metre social distancing rule before entering and during the transfer by bus or train.

Try to minimise your physical contact with any surfaces on the bus or train during your ride.

Obey the rules of passenger movement – from entrance to exit doors, which are appropriately marked.

We recommend buying tickets at stations, ticket vending machines or online.

Air connections
