Sydney-London route! Qantas announces world’s longest direct commercial flight

May 03, 2022 –

Travellers will be able to fly non-stop from Sydney to London after Qantas announced the world’s longest direct commercial flight. The airline said the 20-hour journey will become possible when it takes delivery of a dozen Airbus A350-1000 planes, which can do more than 10,000 miles without refuelling.

Sydney-London route

A Sydney to New York route is also being set up and the new-generation jets open up the potential for direct flights from Australia to any city in the world. The services start in late 2025 and will carry up to 238 passengers across four travel classes. For those wanting to stretch their legs on the mammoth flight, there will be a “wellbeing zone” in the centre of the aircraft that includes a snack bar and screens showing movement and stretching exercises.

It’s important to move around on a long flight as being less active can cause cause pain, stiffness and swelling in the legs, increasing the risk of developing a blood clot known as deep vein thrombosis. The jet is also being designed to offer passengers more room, but 40% of the seats will be in expensive premium cabins.

The planes will have a ‘wellbeing zone’ with snacks and stretching tutorials. Qantas says the planes also have 25% less CO2 emissions per seat and less noise, and it claims the long-distance project – which it calls “Project Sunrise” – will be carbon neutral from day one.

The Australian carrier began a 17-hour non-stop flight between London and Perth in 2018, using Boeing Dreamliner jets. The world’s longest route is currently a New York JFK to Singapore route, operated by Singapore Airlines, which takes 18 hours 50 minutes and travels just over 9,500 miles.

Qantas also said it is buying 40 new aircraft for domestic routes – 20 Airbus A321XLRs and 20 A220-300s – as it retires older Boeing planes.

Entry requirements Greece – latest update

May 3, 2022,

All travellers can now enter Greece restriction-free as the authorities have decided to drop all of their COVID-19 entry rules. The Ministry said that from now on, all incoming travellers would no longer have to follow any rules.

Entry requirements Greece

This means that all travellers, regardless of their country of origin, can enter Greece without having to provide COVID-19 proof – a vaccination, recovery, or test certificate – upon their arrival. Apart from dropping the entry rules, the Greek authorities have revealed that the country has also decided to lift the remaining of its domestic COVID-19 measures. Therefore, while in Greece, all travellers can access cafes, bars, restaurants, and other public places and venues without being required to hold one of the certificates mentioned above.

Greece has already dropped the requirement to fill in the Passenger Locator Form too. Previously, this requirement applied to all travellers who entered Greece. However, since March 15, travellers from all countries have been permitted entry even if they did not hold such a form.

However, the Greek Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris, has highlighted that Greece might reintroduce its entry restrictions again in September, once the summer season is over.

Costa Venezia departs from Istanbul with new cruises

Costa Venezia

Costa Venezia departs from Istanbul with new cruises.

May 2, 2022 – The itineraries, which include “flight + cruise” from Istanbul, are an absolute novelty in the world of organized holidays, the result of the collaboration between Costa Cruises, the Turkish National Tourist Board, Turkish Airlines and Galataport.

Costa Venezia’s new cruises to Turkey and Greece will make their debut from Istanbul on May 1. This is an absolute novelty in the current panorama of organized holidays, which marks the collaboration between Costa Cruises, Turkish Airlines, the Turkish National Tourist Board and Galataport Istanbul.

The proposed formula is the “flight+cruise” package, available from all the main European countries, with scheduled Turkish Airlines flights, which will make it possible to reach Istanbul easily, and then embark on board of Costa Venezia from the new Galataport cruise terminal, equipped with all the comforts and services for the next generation of ships.

“Our restart program ahead of summer is strengthened by a truly unique offer. The main new feature of Costa Venezia cruises is the possibility of visiting the best of Turkey in a single holiday, starting from Istanbul, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We believe Turkey has great potential for cruises, and we are trying to be the first to develop it. Istanbul can be reached from the main European countries in just a few hours’ flight time, it has good air connections and modern ports, as well as a mild climate that makes it possible to operate all year round, and above all it offers an incredible variety of experiences and attractions” – said Mario Zanetti, President of Costa Cruises.

Costa Venezia’s program in Turkey includes three different itineraries, all with embarkation and disembarkation in Istanbul, designed to include longer calls in the ports to enjoy the destinations with plenty of time, among cities rich in history, splendid archaeological and UNESCO World Heritage sites and crystal clear seas.

In spring, summer and autumn, from 1 May to 13 November 2022, Costa Venezia will offer two one-week itineraries dedicated to Turkey and Greece, interchanging with each other, which can be combined into a single 15-day “super tour”, with 8 calls in port longer than 10 hours.

Costa Venezia

The first itinerary is ideal for those who want to explore the best of Turkey and Greece in one holiday. It includes a two-day, one-night call in Istanbul, the beautiful Turkish destinations of Izmir and Bodrum, the island of Mykonos and Athens in Greece.

The second itinerary allows to explore some of Greece’s out-of-the-ordinary locations and the best of Turkey. It includes two two-day, one-night calls in Istanbul and Kusadasi, Turkey, before heading off to explore Rhodes and Heraklion, Greece.

In winter 2022-23, Costa Venezia will be offering a third 12-day itinerary to Turkey, Egypt, Israel and Cyprus, visiting Istanbul (with a two-day, one-night call), Bodrum, Limassol, Haifa (also with a two-day, one-night call), Alexandria and Kusadasi. From spring 2023, the two itineraries in Turkey and Greece will resume.

The range of excursions available has been redesigned to explore hidden and little-visited places, and to enjoy the most authentic traditions, flavors and colors. Thanks to these offers it is possible, for example, to attend a private concert in a Roman amphitheater in Ephesus; to experience Istanbul by night; to take a cruise on the Bosphorus, between the two continents; to sleep in the typical houses dug out of the rock in the lunar landscapes of Cappadocia; to relax in the natural pools of Pamukkale; to snorkel among the sunken remains of the city of Mindo, together with an archaeologist. And again, to take a walk through the vineyards of Kusadasi with a wine expert; to go horseback riding through the pine forests and sand of Pamucak beach; to explore the coast of the Bodrum peninsula on a private caique; to discover the secrets of the Acropolis in Athens or relax in the sun on the beautiful beaches of Mykonos, Rhodes and Crete.

Costa Venezia, built at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Monfalcone, is a 135,000-ton ship with 2,116 guest cabins. With 13 different restaurants and 8 bars, the gastronomic offer is among the widest in the fleet. On board it is possible to taste food dishes and menus specifically created for Costa by three world-renowned chefs, Bruno Barbieri, Hélène Darroze and Ángel León, that will allow to explore every destination through food. There are many different wide outdoor spaces to fully enjoy the sailing experience. Families with children will find many activities on board, such as a water park and an adventure park, and couples will find a private spa, swimming pools and plenty of space for intimate moments.

Updated Malaysia entry requirements

Malaysia is relaxing virus restrictions including testing at airports and mask mandates, as infection rates flatten and the nation adjusts to living with Covid.

The country is scrapping mandatory testing on incoming vaccinated travellers and children under 12 from 1 May. Wearing masks outdoors will be made optional and social distancing measures dropped. Some entry restrictions will remain in place for unvaccinated travellers.

Malaysia entry requirements

Malaysia Airlines, the national carrier of Malaysia, welcomes the news. The airline is currently flying its MH1 and MH3 routes 11x weekly from London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (LHR-KUL) until 29 June and will return to its full double daily service from 30 June onwards.

Daniel Bainbridge, Regional Director UK & Europe, commented: “I am delighted to see that the Malaysian Government is removing all pre-entry and arrival testing requirements for fully vaccinated travellers. Malaysia Airlines is the only airline offering direct flights from the UK to Malaysia and international arrivals have increased dramatically since the border officially opened on 1 April. This further removal of entry requirements is an even clearer sign that Malaysia is fully open to the world, and Malaysia Airlines cannot wait to welcome more passengers onboard with our warm Malaysian hospitality.”

Shopping in Santorini

Shopping in Santorini

Shopping in Santorini

Shopping in Santorini can be great fun. Small shops border the stone streets, while beautiful galleries, quality leather shops and loads of Gold shops sit side by side with local handicrafts and small souvenir shops featuring inexpensive buys.

Even if you are not a fanatical shopper, Santorini’s shopping market -especially in Fira- will prove to be more than tempting. Prices range from the very costly to the preposterously inexpensive.

Compared to Fira’s market, the market in Oia is less flashy and more ethnic and local. The original and ingeniously decorated of shop’s windows will certainly leave an impression on you. The pleasant small shops feature an assortment of artefacts and works of art from several countries and cultures. Similar shops can be found in Fira.

Also, if you wish to buy cosmetics there are a large store in central Fira with a wide range of cosmetics, perfumes and sun protection products.

As you see, there you can find several goods to buy, jewelleries, high quality leather goods and others as woven goods, folk art, and handicrafts. So, do not hesitate to go for Santorini shopping.

The other thing that many people buy on the island is the wine. There are a number of wineries to visit and here you can taste some of Santorini’s famous wines before deciding on your purchase. Other local products such as tomato juice can also be purchased at the wineries.

Shopping in Santorini can be an excellent and unique experience. The biggest economic driver for the island is tourism, which means that there is a large market for local producers, designers, artists, and jewel smiths to create their own unique wares for sale.

Of course, there is a broad variety of souvenir shops all over the island, which tend to sell mass-produced items, similar to those that can be bought throughout Greek tourist destinations. Prices can range from very cheap to the extremely costly, high-quality items you won’t find anywhere else in the world. The shops stay open until late in the evening- especially in the summer season- so you can enjoy searching for the right thing beyond the heat of the day.

Shopping in Santorini

Fira

Fira is the main centre for shopping on the island, as it is the capital. There is a huge variety of places to visit here, with a great diversity of products for sale. Through the centre is a street known as ‘gold street’ for its over 40 jewellers present. Make sure your purchases are truly handmade, as there are many shops which offer unique items which speak to the tradition and history of the island. Such a shop would be ‘Ilias Lalaounis’, where every piece of jewellery has its own story and is inspired deeply by Santorini’s 3,500-year history.

For a more contemporary feel, try Koukla jewelry and crafts. ‘Gorgona’ is both an art and gift shop, which sells its own hand made art, designs into glass and a variety of other artistic gifts which are made by artists on the island. Both Bazaar and Drakkar shops located near to the centre of Fira offer youthful and elegant clothes, bags and accessories from both Greek and international designers.

For upscale, luxury fashion, try out ‘The White Santorini’, with pieces handcrafted and sewn in Greece by designer Sophia Hatzigeorgiou. Utilizing delicate materials and patterns inspired by the island itself, you can find one branch in Fira and a second in Kamari beach. A perfect place to look for your new outfit before going out for a romantic meal atop the caldera.

Oia

The village of Oia is the site of the famous postcard vistas of Santorini. It’s also one of the best areas for shopping and somewhere you should certainly consider to include in your itinerary. ‘Atlantis Bookshop’ is a must go for anyone who is a fan of reading.

It is owned by people from across Europe and the US who love the island and the history, with a number of volumes that would be very difficult to find elsewhere- particularly if you’re interested in the Cyclades and Greek history.

If you’d like to take home some genuine art by a local then it is worth visiting ‘Galanopoulos’ art gallery. Here you’ll find not only fine art with a specific bent toward home and interior design but also giclee prints on paper or canvas.

There are also mix painting sculptures that utilize local materials- such as stone and earth- and colour palettes. ‘Replica’ is a shop that you can find pieces of fine art inspired by those of antiquity, such as ceramics, pottery, frescoes, and terracotta figurines. ‘Iama’ wine shop is one that started small and has developed into a big name for itself, selling wines from across the island and the rest of the country.

‘Frederika’ is another shop, with globally sought after products, crafted by the artisan who gives her name to the shop. Frederika carves scenes of the island into local pumice stone, reflecting the extreme diversity and complexity of perspectives from every spot in Santorini. This is an age old tradition which has been brought forth elegantly, available for purchase in the shop Finikia, right next to Oia.

Firostefani

Located above the capital of Fira, you will find that Firostefani has the best views of the Caldera, with the added extra height giving you greater distance. The area is typically less crowded than Fira as well, which means greater access to the shops for you. Don’t miss the ‘Art of the Loom’, which has taken old wooden artifacts from the textile factories that were part of the island economy, and crafted them into artistic pieces, as well as practical items and jewelry. ‘Aegean Designs’ is another place to stop by.

Selling handcrafted items on the island itself, and located in a beautiful garden, they retail hand painted linen, wall hangings, jewellery and more, taking deep inspiration from the colours and textures of the Aegean. For more innovative and quirky art pieces, drop into ‘Leoni Schmiedel’, with its excellent view over the caldera and art, featuring materials ever present from Santorini, such as sand, stone and old parchments. Furthermore, the shop/gallery is so ornately decorated, it is like a museum.

Peripheral villages

If you’re down on Kamari beach, one of the biggest hotspots for beach life and shopping, then check out ‘Ammos’ store. Part of the biggest chain on the island, you would have also noticed it in Fira and Oia. Here you can find stylish apparel from international brands, as well as some Greek designers. If you’re passing Vedema resort in Megalochori, be sure to check out luxury fashion boutique ‘Wanderlista’ for a great range of upscale fashion based on locations. And whilst you’re there, ‘Galateas Pottery Studio’ is the perfect place to find unique ceramics that bring a splash of color to any home.

In Messaria, it’s well worth visiting ‘Spira’, a beautiful sculpture shop that is owned by a long lineage of marble sculptors. You can find a diversity of works made from marble, as well as other local stone, such as kitchen sinks, bathroom flooring, fireplaces, and ornate tiles- all crafted with attention to detail and aesthetics. Keep your eyes open everywhere you go on the island, and you’ll be sure to bring home that something special.

EVEN Hotel New York

EVEN Hotel New York – Times Square South

EVEN Hotel New York

EVEN Hotel New York – Times Square South

April 28, 2022 –

With wellness at its core, EVEN Hotels is part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ Premium Collection. In New York City, EVEN Hotel New York – Times Square South is a hub for business and leisure travelers with proximity to Madison Square Garden and the Empire State Building. We chat with the hotel’s General Manager John Beck who’s worked in the hospitality industry for more than 15 years.

EVEN Hotel New York

What has been your most memorable guest room request?
In addition to business travelers, we have many guests come to our hotel to celebrate an anniversary, milestone birthday, or get the whole family together to see Broadway shows and other popular NYC attractions. One of our most memorable guests proposed to their significant other at the Empire State Building on New Year’s Eve! We feel so honored to have played a small role in one of their biggest life moments.

What was the strangest item a guest forgot or left behind?
Guests are always leaving interesting things behind, but the strangest was in 2019 when the famous band, Phish, was playing a show at Madison Square Garden. A guest in town for the concert left an actual fish in their room. When the guest left, we kept him in our office and named him Fishy!

What was the most memorable reason for a stay or celebration?
We’ve recently been working with The Dream Factory, an organization that helps grant the wishes of critical and chronically ill children. It’s extremely special to be a part of their experience, and our team is dedicated to pulling out all the stops for the families during their stay.

EVEN Hotel New York – We get a lot of popular fitness influencers who love posting about their journey, and our hotel is the perfect fit to provide them with a nicely balanced wellness stay while on vacation. And due to our proximity to Madison Square Garden, we have hosted quite a few big-name musical talents! It’s safe to say if an artist is performing at our neighboring venue, there’s a likely chance they may be staying with us.

Cool hotel features that guests don’t know about?
As IHG Hotels & Resorts’ wellness-minded brand designed for business and leisure travelers, many of our guests love the in-room fitness zones giving them the freedom to work out in the comfort of their own room. There are also many attractions, restaurants and shopping within walking distance – which is always well-received by our guests!

The moment you were most proud of the brand?
EVEN Hotel New York – Times Square South is the first new-build EVEN property. We had the opportunity to improve and revise the early brand standards to be more adaptable to expansion. We are proud of the role we have had in shaping our brand!

What is your favorite place to visit outside of the hotel?
One of our most asked questions tends to center around where to find the best bagel in NYC. So, we’ve had a lot of fun “researching” all the options around us to be bagel experts. We also love visiting Hudson Yards, which is a short walk and constantly has new exhibits and events.

EVEN Hotel New York

Any other fun fact you’d like people to know about the hotel?
We are the twice recipient of the IHG Torchbearer Award, which is given to hotels that have achieved the highest level of excellence in all aspects of operation – from quality to customer satisfaction. We take a lot of pride in our guest experience and held the top spot for all NYC hotels on TripAdvisor for 6 months after opening and have remained in the top 5% since.

If you had to pick your favorite guest room, which would it be and why?
Room 2400 is our favorite room; it’s on a higher floor with floor-to-ceiling windows and even a window in the shower! It has a great view of the Hudson River, Freedom Tower, The Edge and Empire State Building!

What’s your most favorite F&B offering and why?
Our onsite restaurant, has an expansive menu with well-balanced options. There is no better way to start the day in the big apple than with our favorite menu item, the Salmon Board with a NY Bagel. For a night cap we recommend the Mixed Berry Mojito; it’s fun and fruity!

How would you define the hotel in three words?
Energizing, Welcoming, Modern

Where can people book their stay?
Discover EVEN Hotel New York – Times Square South for yourself and book your big apple adventure here. Room rates from US$217.55 per night*

*IHG One Rewards members have access to our lowest rates, and can earn more points faster and gain rewards sooner. With richer benefits from free breakfast to more opportunities for Elite members to receive early check-in, late check-out and room upgrades, IHG One Rewards offers more choice, value and relevant benefits than ever before.

Lotte New York Palace

Lotte New York Palace extends Lotte hotel brand power

Lotte New York Palace

Lotte New York Palace extends Lotte hotel brand power

April 27, 2022 –

LOTTE NEW YORK PALACE. Originally built as the mansion for Henry Villard, a prominent financier with railroad construction business in 1882, it now stands as a historic landmark in Midtown Manhattan.

Lotte New York Palace

With over 140 years history, LOTTE NEW YORK PALACE was acquired by LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS, the largest hotel group in South Korea in 2015, and continues to prove its eminence. This was also the first time for a Korean hotel brand to make its debut in New York, which drew big interest and expectation within the hospitality industry.

The 55-story hotel feature total 909 guest rooms and 23 banquet halls in The Palace (The Villard Houses), of which the neo-Italian Renaissance style from the 19th century still remain, and The Towers behind it. From the 41st to 51st floors of this luxury hotel, boasting incomparable size even in NYC, sits modern suites. Amongst them, the triplex penthouse, the Champagne Suite is iconic to the hotel. Upon entrance to the suite inspired by the finest Champagne, Dom Pérignon, a shimmering crystal pendant chandelier designed to invoke the effervescent champagne bubble cates the eyes. The interior welcomes guests with a Nouveau Nero marble floor leading to a double-story Grand Parlour surrounded by floor to ceiling windows. The master and queen suites take design inspiration from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with expressions of leather and deep rose tones. The Champagne cave, the only one of its kind in NYC, provides a rustic experience for guests directly adjacent to the dining room.

Another iconic suite is the Jewel Suite, designed in collaboration with acclaimed jewelry designer Martin Katz. The suite opens with a two-story cascading crystal chandelier and five sculptural crystal jewel boxes, personally curated by Martin Katz. The suite gleams from the reflection, as if one is inside the jewel box. The master and double bedrooms reflect the jeweled theme in opulent, upscale furnishings complete with a master bath and guest bath, respectively.

Both terrace levels of the Champagne and the Jewel Suites house wood burning fireplaces and custom designed hot tubs where guests can enjoy unobstructed city view. The hotel is deeply ingrained with artistic features, not to mention the sculptures and paintings of the gold room and the drawing room.

The hotel was much more upgraded after the acquisition by LOTTE. Firstly, all staff above the director level from the previous New York Palace hotel were invited to Korea and were given Korean-styled hospitality service training based on LOTTE HOTELS’ expertise of over 40 years. In general, organizational restructuring is conducted after acquisition, whereas LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS made almost no changes to the existing manpower. Furthermore, by hosting significant global events such as the UN General Assembly and national summits, and by being known as the hotel that the U.S. presidents stay, LOTTE HOTEL’s investment continues to prosper.

LOTTE NEW YORK PALACE continues to enhance the brand power of LOTTE HOTELS & RESORTS in NYC, the global area for international chain hotels, such as being honoured by the prestigious travel magazine, Condé Nast Traveler’s 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards, and being accoladed by the Forbes Travel Guide, the so-called the hotel version of Michelin Guide, as the 2021 Recommended Hotel.
