Stricter environmental measures for cruise ships in Canada

Stricter environmental measures for cruise ships in Canada

blank

blank

April 07, 2022 – Stricter environmental measures for cruise ships in Canada

This week, the government of Canada, in coordination with industry, announced new environmental measures for cruise ships in Canadian waters that exceed international standards.

For the 2022 season, cruise operators will implement stricter environmental measures regarding greywater and blackwater (greywater is defined as the drainage from sinks, laundry machines, bathtubs, shower stalls or dishwashers and blackwater is defined as the wastewater from bathrooms and toilets).

The measures include:
  • Prohibiting the discharge of greywater and treated blackwater within three nautical miles from shore where geographically possible
  • Treating greywater together with blackwater before it is discharged between three and 12 nautical miles from shore to the greatest extent possible
  • Strengthening the treatment of blackwater between three and 12 nautical miles from shore using an approved treatment device
  • Reporting to Transport Canada compliance with these measures as they relate to discharges made within Canadian waters.

These measures will better protect Canada’s oceans and the marine environment and will support the work that is underway to conserve 25 percent of Canada’s oceans by 2025 and 30 percent by 2030. Although currently only in effect for 2022, the government of Canada plans to make these changes permanent.

In a statement, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), said, “Transport Canada’s announcement [Monday] regarding new environmental measures is a result of ongoing dialogue with the cruise industry and reflects the industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship and continually advancing environmental sustainability practices.”

It continued: “CLIA cruise line members have instituted industry policies that in many cases are more comprehensive than national and international regulations on wastewater discharges. For example, CLIA members must implement a mandatory CLIA policy to not discharge untreated sewage in the ocean, anywhere, anytime, under normal operations even though international regulations allow such discharges within specific guidelines.

Many CLIA members’ ships are equipped with Advanced Waste Treatment Systems (AWTS), and all new ship builds will use AWTS, which treat wastewater to a tertiary level, a higher standard than wastewater treatment facilities in some coastal cities in both the United States and Canada.”

Canada Cruising Resumes

As announced in early March, cruising in Canada was OK’d cruising from the start of April. Health measures in place include all crew and passengers being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and passengers being required to take a COVID-19 molecular test within 72 hours before boarding a cruise ship or taking an antigen test within one day of boarding a cruise ship.

“CLIA applauds Canada’s decision to welcome cruise ships back for a 2022 season,” the association said this week. “This decision allows the tourism sector to start rebuilding the 30,000 jobs and more than $4 billion in economic activity that were generated by the cruise industry across Canada prior to 2020, while strengthening connections to neighbouring regions.”

April 6, 2022 – Air Belgium to fly to South Africa

Air Belgium plans to fly seasonal flights to South Africa starting in September.

It will include three flights each week, flying simultaneously to Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Western Cape investment organisation, Wesgro, said that the Johannesburg and Cape Town routes were currently the Belgium airline’s only African flights.

It is another boost to the province’s tourism sector, which is trying to get back on its feet.

Wesgro CEO Wrenelle Stander explained: “I’m very pleased to say that with Air Belgium coming back, we’re getting to about 23 of the 27 direct services back into operation, so we’re very excited about that.”

She also said that the tourism market was slowly getting back to pre-COVID-19 numbers.

“The international operations are back at about 60-65% and the domestic operations are back at 72%, so the recovery, I think, is quite strong,” said Stander.

Hilton to Debut on Galapagos Island

April 6, 2022 – Hilton to Debut on Galapagos Island.

Hilton is set to debut the Curio Collection by Hilton brand on the Galápagos island of Santa Cruz. The company has signed a franchise agreement with Serinatura S.A. to convert the existing Royal Palm Galápagos to a Hilton property. The hotel is expected to join Curio Collection by Hilton in July 2022.

As per the agreement, the property will remain owned and operated by its current management company, led by Diego Andrade Murtinho, while joining Curio Collection by Hilton. With an anticipated conversion in July 2022, Royal Palm Galapagos, Curio Collection by Hilton will represent the first international hotel brand name with a presence in the destination and will adhere to Hilton’s global environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy known as “Travel with Purpose”.

Santa Cruz is home to Tortuga Bay, the Charles Darwin Research Station and a port for ecologically responsible cruising. Secluded on a 160-hectare estate in the Miconia Highland Forests adjacent to the Galápagos National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hotel is nestled in a valley between two extinct cinder cone volcanoes and features nine areas of geological interest from craters to lava tunnels. Royal Palm Galapagos is the only hotel with a Miconia and Escalesia reforestation program, and a rain harvesting program.

The boutique hotel offers 21 casitas and villas, a pool, spa, fitness center and a fine-dining restaurant located inside a cavern within one of the property’s lava tunnels. The property is undergoing a renovation plan including a refresh of the lobby, spa, guestrooms and dining experience.

Born in 2000 out of a passion for travel, nature and environmental connection, the boutique hotel is comprised of 21 casitas and villas built around nature and brimming with the charm of an Ecuadorian Hacienda. Guests can recharge at the estate’s picturesque pool, spa and fitness center, or enjoy the natural wonders of the Galapagos by experiencing one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters from green turtles to beautiful birds, while enjoying the highest level of comfort and services provided within the protected eco-sensitive location.

For an extra immersive dining experience, the hotel features the only fine dining restaurant located inside a cavern within one of the property’s lava tunnels. This once-in-a-lifetime experience gives guests a glimpse of the incredible forces that created the archipelago, while they enjoy a tasting menu inspired by local culture and ingredients.

Expected to join Curio Collection by Hilton in July 2022, the hotel is currently undergoing a renovation plan including a refresh of the lobby, spa, guest rooms and dining. The renovation will complement and reinforce the hotel’s existing sustainable architecture and design, with a continued focus on local sourcing, as well as environmental programs including its water reduction system where it reuses the water from rain and recycles almost 90% of its residues, a Plant-a-Tree Program and on-site produce farm utilized by the restaurants.

“At Hilton, we recognize that we have a critical responsibility to protect the communities where we serve, which is reflected in our ESG strategy, Travel with Purpose. We look forward to working with this legendary property to continue to protect this incredible destination, and to further programs that allow our guests to travel to locations such as this, sustainably and responsibly,” said Jean Garris Hand, vice president, global environmental, social and governance, Hilton.

The Hilton Effect Foundation, the company’s global philanthropic arm that seeks to advance Hilton’s “Travel with Purpose” goals, has been engaged in projects across the region, including partnering with organizations such as The Nature Conservancy to protect native Ecuador fish species and Galápagos Conservancy to feed and protect the critically endangered Floreana giant tortoise.

Introducing new lodge in Maun Thamo Telele 2022

hotel news

Introducing new lodge in Maun Thamo Telele

blank

blank

blank

April 6, 2022 – Introducing new lodge in Maun Thamo Telele.

Thamo Telele is a 250-hectare private game reserve on the outskirts of the iconic safari town of Maun with an enviable location bordering the Thamalakane River. Not only is Maun the gateway for travel into the Okavango Delta, but this country town with its fascinating people and quirky culture has blossomed into a tourism destination in its own right.

The lodge itself is set amongst a lush forest of old growth leadwood, bird plum and acacia trees. Each suite and chalet is a little bush haven, wrapped around the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful forest area.

Thamo Telele having just undergone an exciting refurbishment, is warm, relaxed and colourfully quirky. Expect new giraffe themed interiors, air-conditioned rooms, beautiful bathrooms, outside showers, a cool bar and lounge area for sundowners and best of all a refreshing pool for a little sundeck and solitude.

This is the ideal stop-over either side of your safari!

A great place to relax and rejuvenate, here you can enjoy nature-based activities which include close encounters with our resident giraffe herd, horse rides, birding, nature walks, a local cultural tour and mountain bike rides.

One of the most captivating things about the lodge is its resident herd of 20 giraffe, which you can observe while on activities in the reserve and most enthralling get up close and personal to in the morning and evening while they feed at the waterhole. There are even naturalists on hand to tell you all about these fascinating animals, including giraffe conservation issues throughout Africa. This is a very special experience and one that we at Thamo Telele are particularly excited about!

In fact, the lodge was named after our littlest resident giraffe, born during our refurb in 2021. Surprisingly tall from birth, she was soon called Thamo Telele, meaning ‘long neck’ in Setswana. As we observed her growing day-by-day, she captured our hearts in such a profound way, that we decided to rename our ‘new’ lodge after her.

The abundant bird life will set any twitcher twitching and anyone with a soft spot for giraffe will be in a state of pure bliss as they get up close and learn more about our resident herd from our team of naturalists. In fact, the lodge was named after our littlest resident giraffe, born during our refurb in 2021. As we observed her growing day-by-day, she captured our hearts in such a profound way, that we decided to rename our ‘new’ lodge after her.

And as she continues to capture our hearts, upon arrival, she’ll be waiting to welcome you to this very special place in Maun she calls home.

Air Serbia Resumes Direct Belgrade-Nice Flights in 2024

Air Serbia expands network

Air Serbia expands network

blank

blank

blank

April 5, 2022 – Air Serbia expands network

Air Serbia will begin expanding its network this month with the introduction and resumption of routes, additional flights, expansion of its charter network and capacity growth.

Air Serbia expands network

As of next week, the airline will increase frequencies on a number of destinations from its Belgrade base including Amsterdam, Athens, Berlin, Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Milan, Oslo, Paris, Podgorica, Rome, Sarajevo, Skopje, Stockholm, Tivat, Zagreb and Zurich. The carrier will also resume operations to Venice next week after more than two years.

During this month, Air Serbia will launch the first of its fourteen new routes, with services to Valencia to be inaugurated on April 21. Sales for the first flight are performing well, with the carrier upgrading capacity to the Airbus A320 aircraft.

Air Serbia expands network:

Starting next week, Air Serbia is commencing its summer charter program with operations kicking off to Hurghada. This year, the carrier will maintain leisure flights to Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Italy and Algeria. Destinations include Antalya, Bodrum, Cephalonia, Chania, Corfu, Gazipasa, Dalaman, Heraklion, Hurghada, Izmir, Oran, Palermo, Rhodes, Samos, Sharm El Sheikh, Skiathos and Zakynthos.

Air Serbia expands network:
The most frequent are once again Antalya in Turkey and Hurghada in Egypt. Air Serbia will also operate charters from Niš to Antalya, Gizpasa and Hurghada, with services to commence in mid-June. “Although the peak travel period is still in June, July, August, and mid-September, in the last few years we have also seen growth in charter services during April, May, October, and November”, the airline said. Last year, Air Serbia operated a total of 1.100 round trip charter flights, carrying some 140.000 passengers.

The Serbian carrier is expected to see a boost in demand next month after the basketball EuroLeague Final Four tournament, which was due to be held in Berlin, was moved to Belgrade due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In line with the expected finalists and spike in demand, the airline is increasing capacity on flights to Athens and Barcelona, with teams from Greece, Spain and Turkey expected to take part. In the coming period, Air Serbia also plans to expand its Airbus fleet, to complement the addition of regional turboprop aircraft.

The carrier’s CEO, Jiri Marek, recently said, “We are continuing the massive expansion of our network in order to complement the existing service and provide passengers the broadest possible selection when planning trips and holidays. We plan to fly to more than sixty destinations in Europe, North America, and the Middle East this year. An exciting a dynamic period is ahead of us”.

Union Øye, Norangsfjorden, Norway
A favorite refuge for royal families, mountaineers and explorers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this charming hotel is nestled within an untouched natural environment at the spot where the Norang fjord begins to dwindle. While upholding the spirit of its founders and a strong connection with the local communities, the hotel has been modernized, and new rooms have been added. The establishment asserts a zero-waste, zero-plastic policy. Take a breather here at the ends of the earth, where you can listen to famous ghost stories and local folklore around the fireplace. The owners and chef strive to propose a principally locally sourced culinary selection, pamper their guests, and endlessly share the beauty of their mountain and the surrounding villages.

Fleur de Loire, Blois, France (Opens in June 2022)
The native-born two-star chef Christophe Hay wears more than one hat. An accomplished farmer, gardener, rancher and fisherman, he is now opening a refined hotel in Blois with thirty-three rooms and eleven suites, as well as a gourmet restaurant with a view of the Loire and the beautiful town of Blois. This former hospice was built for Gaston d’Orléans, the son of Henry IV and Marie de’ Medici. The 5,000 m2 / 53,820 ft2 space is fully eco-designed, while the courtyard opens onto a poetic garden representing the river’s meandering path. At the Spa, Sisley – the luxury brand also from Blois – is chosen for its phyto-cosmetology expertise. The ingredients in each dish include meats from the chef’s ranch (such as Wagyu beef), vegetables from the immense kitchen garden, and other produce from local farmers. The zero-plastic rooms are furnished with materials from eco-certified forests and businesses. Waste and energy reduction strategies such as rainwater recuperation complete the ecological dimension of this unique destination and its exceptional epicurean experience.

La Fonda Hotel & Spa, Marbella, Spain (Opens in July 2022)
The three historical buildings of this twenty-one-room boutique hotel stretch along the Casco Antiguo, the oldest and most authentic district of this Andalusian city. Its owners resolved to restore the architectural splendor of this sixteenth-century building. This began with archaeological digs that produced surprising treasures, such as the nave of an old church, which are presented in a small museum at the entrance of the hotel. From a raw food bar to grilled fish and party platters – and the bonus of a rooftop cocktail bar – the restaurant keeps pace with the Costa del Sol spirit, and is set to become the not-to-be-missed epicurean destination of this historic district.

Iconic of the Corsican mountains, the building stands in the picturesque, unspoiled village of Zonza, one hour from the coast. The seventeen hectare / forty-two acres of this authentic Belle Époque estate, currently being renovated in the spirit of its patrimony and history, was already welcoming wealthy visitors in the early twentieth century. Seek refuge in one of the secluded shepherds’ huts, with an optional private swimming pool, in this natural setting offering an unobstructed view of the Bavella needles. At the Spa, the natural and organic Corsican skincare brand Nucca – founded by the Canarelli family – brings you the best of local well-being. “While we are extensively prepared to ensure all of our guests can travel safely from an operational standpoint through the robust safety and health measures that we have put in place including our contactless check-in procedure via airasia Super App, FACES facial recognition and more, we would like to remind our guests to adhere to all SOPs set by the government during their travels. Today is the day we have been waiting for and we can’t wait to see you back on board our flights soon!”

Fully vaccinated travellers who wish to travel to and from Malaysia must meet the requirements set by the Malaysian Government and the respective Governments of all origin and arrival countries prior to purchasing their flights and upon arrival.

As part of its robust health and safety protocols, AirAsia Malaysia has successfully migrated over 95% of its guests to use contactless self-check-in service via the airasia Super App and its website, an initiative that was made mandatory at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic last year. The airline will continue to promote its contactless procedures as an integral part of its efforts to further strengthen its Covid-19 mitigation plan.

As part of an ongoing education process, AirAsia is encouraging all guests to migrate and upgrade to the all-in-one airasia Super App for a seamless and contactless journey.
