March 23, 2022 – JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge will open in 2023

Marriott International, Inc. today announced it has signed an agreement with Baraka Lodges LTD. to enter the safari segment in Africa. JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge will be located within the Mara National Reserve, one of Africa’s most renowned wildlife conservation and wilderness regions. Offering discerning travellers an unparalleled setting, the elegant retreat expects to welcome guests in 2023.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge Kenya

Overlooking the famed banks of the River Talek and on the edge of the reserve, JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge’s prime location will offer guests a distinctively elevated camp from which to discover the Masai Mara National Reserve, its stunning vistas, abundant wildlife, and endless plains.

Plans for the new-build lodge feature 20 private tents, including one presidential canvas-topped pavilion and two interconnecting canopied suites, ideal for families, each with a private terrace overlooking the river.

Shared spaces will include a restaurant, lounge bar, spa, and a large outdoor terrace with fire pits that will play host to traditional Masai dance performances in the evening.

The untamed landscape will offer guests the opportunity to observe the “Big Five” that Masai Mara is home to: lions, leopards, buffalos, rhinoceros and elephants. Between June and September, the reserve is also host to the annual great wildebeest migration, when more than 10 million animals travel a distance of 1,800 miles from the Serengeti in neighbouring Tanzania.

“As a brand rooted in mindfulness, we cannot think of a more perfect retreat for the mind, body, and soul than the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya,” said Bruce Rohr, Vice President and Brand Leader, JW Marriott, Marriott International.

“JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge will offer guests a luxurious backdrop to make once-in-a-lifetime memories as they connect with nature and wildlife as never before. We are thrilled that the JW Marriott brand will be welcoming adventure travellers, including families, to this breath-taking part of the world.”

Conservation of the land and its inhabitants will be at the heart of JW Marriott Masai Mara. The safari lodge aims to employ up to 50 locals from the Masai community, and will offer robust learning opportunities for guests looking to immersive themselves in the destination.

“The signing of JW Masai Mara Lodge is a milestone in Marriott International’s growth in Africa as the company enters the luxury safari segment. This landmark project is in response to travellers’ growing desire for experiential offerings that enable them to build a deeper connection with their chosen destination.

JW Marriott encourages guests to be mindful and present, which perfectly lends itself to meaningful safari holidays,” said Jerome Briet, Chief Development Officer, Europe, Middle East & Africa, Marriott International.

A nod to the captivating surroundings, guests can expect an authentic sense of place through artful design and architecture. Sophisticated, interiors will be led by Kristina Zanic.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge: The location and surrounding landscape will be reflected at every turn, creating harmony with the natural world and drawing inspiration from the elements: earth, wind, fire and water.

Warm touches of neutrals and natural materials, will lend to a warm ambience, while a earth tone colour palette promises to sit in harmony with the landscape, inviting guests to connect with nature and focus on their well being.

During their stay, guests will enjoy the immersive, holistic approach to wellness while being mindful of the environment and their impact on the land.

“We’re delighted to collaborate with Marriott International to debut this stunning luxury lodge and their first Safari offering in the Masai Mara,” said Mr. Shivan Patel of Baraka Lodges LTD.

March 22, 2022 – Air Montenegro flights to France

Air Montenegro is expanding its operations this coming summer season with the launch of three new routes, all of which are on the French market.

Air Montenegro flights to France

The carrier will introduce three weekly rotations from Podgorica to Paris and one weekly service to both Lyon and Nantes. Flights to the French capital and Lyon will commence on April 9, while operations to Nantes will be inaugurated on May 7. As recently reported, the carrier also plans to increase frequencies across its network. Air Montenegro will up operations from both Podgorica and Tivat to Belgrade in order to offer several daily flights, while an additional weekly rotation will be introduced from Tivat to both Ljubljana and Banja Luka, with four and three weekly services to be maintained respectively. Furthermore, the airline will run daily flights between Tivat and Istanbul.

Destination Launch date
Paris APR 09
Lyon APR 09
Nantes MAY 07

Air Montenegro faces no direct competition on any of its new routes. Paris and Lyon were both previously served by the former national carrier Montenegro Airlines.

Air Montenegro flights to France – the airline initially planned to introduce Lyon to its network for a limited time between September and October of last year, however, it suspended ticket sales several weeks before the route’s launch. This summer will also see Air Serbia introduce operations to Lyon. The carrier has said the new route will offer “seamless connections to cities such as Podgorica and Tivat”.

The Montenegrin carrier plans to grow its fleet this summer by up to two aircraft. The Montenegrin government has confirmed plans it will acquire an Embraer E195 aircraft for the state carrier. The jet, registered 40-AOC, is owned by the Brazilian BNDS bank and was previously operated by Montenegro Airlines.

The aircraft has been grounded since December 26, 2020. Initially, Air Montenegro was to acquire the jet itself, however, informed the state last December it did not have sufficient finances to do so. Air Montenegro also plans to dry lease a larger jet, from either the Airbus A320-family or the Boeing 737 family this April, at the earliest, for a period of between three and eight years. The carrier currently boasts a fleet of two E195s.

Myanmar reopens to travellers

Myanmar reopens to travellers

March 22, 2022 -Myanmar reopens to travellers on 17 April, the government announced after a two-year shut-down due to the Covid-19 pandemicThe junta’s announcement, however, lacked details on visa entry rules or the airlines intending to serve Yangon’s international airport.

Myanmar reopens to travellers

Myanmar first closed the country in March 2022 to international tourists to tackle a surge in Covid-19 cases. However, since 1 February 2021, when a military coup swept aside the country’s legitimate government, Myanmar has descended into chaos and civil unrest, which has seen more than 1,600 civilians killed and an estimated 11,000 arrested and imprisoned.

The military junta announced that international tourists effective 17 April can enter the country, but official websites, including immigration and the country tourism ministry, have yet to clarify the visa requirements or whether the eVisa and visa-on-arrival facilities will be reinstated.

There are no details on which airlines will serve Yangon’s international airport that is currently open only to repatriation flights for Myanmar citizens and those entering the country on official business with the junta.

Myanmar reopens to travellers. As of 17 April, entry will be limited to just fully vaccinated travellers who must undergo two PCR tests during a week-long quarantine in Yangon on arrival.

Airline booking websites that offered up to 30 foreign flights to Yangon daily from cities around Asia pre-Covid-19  flagged travel suspension notices for flights throughout April suggesting no commercial scheduled flights are in the pipeline.

It is too early to identify airlines that might consider flying to Yangon, with the exception of Myanmar Airways International, which continues to offer repatriation flights from Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur to Yangon. Thai Airways International flies ad hoc services from Bangkok.

Earlier in the year, Myanmar’s Ministry of Immigration posted a notice on its website that said the ban on international travel and the issue of visas would continue until 31 March 2022.

Even if Myanmar opens a visa-on-arrival or eVisa facility for international tourists, travel firms are not optimistic they will see any bookings. There are strong sentiments against visiting the country. Travellers will be wary of the security risks and are likely to support a boycott of the country. As long as a military junta that usurped power from a democratically appointed government runs the country travellers will go elsewhere.

Hungary travel restrictions – Updated news

In relation to tourism, this means a return to pre-pandemic entry rules, as well unrestricted access to and use of accommodation and attractions.

There is also now no mandatory use of masks.

Travellers can enter Hungary without the need for any vaccination or immunity certificate or any type of tests.

At the same time, vaccination certificates are no longer required to access indoor congresses or conferences, accommodations and spas, or outdoor events of any type.

Land and water borders have been open without restriction since June last to those entering from Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Slovakia.

This was later extended to Ukraine, but until now air arrivals were subject to restrictions, including a PCR test.

hong kong reopen borders

Hong Kong reopens borders from 1st April

Hong Kong reopen borders from 1st April

March 21, 2022 – Hong Kong has begun the process of reopening its borders in response to growing demands from the business community.

Hong Kong reopen borders from 1st April

A ban on flights from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, India, Pakistan, Nepal and the Philippines will end on April 1st.

At the same time, hotel quarantine for arrivals from those destinations will be cut to seven days from 14.

Hong Kong chief executive, Carrie Lam, also confirmed citywide Covid-19 mass testing will be put “on hold”.

Most social-distancing measures will be gradually eased from April 21st, including allowing dining-in at restaurants after 18:00.

Up to four people will be allowed at social gatherings during the first phase of reopening.

Although Covid-19 cases have skyrocketed in recent weeks, officials have begun to acknowledge the damage the absolutist approach to controlling the pandemic has had on the city.

The moves were reportedly spurred by frustration in the banking community and wider population, which has endured more than two years of effectively closed borders.

While curbs and quarantines kept the city virtually virus-free for much of the pandemic, the more contagious Omicron variant evaded measures, cutting a swathe through the city.

Hong Kong now has the highest Covid-19 death rate in the world, with hundreds of under-vaccinated elderly people and care-home residents killed by the virus.

  • More SMMEs showcasing the lesser known variety of South Africa’s product offering; and
  • Overall a covid-19 regulations adherence event that will ensure delegates safety.

While registration for exhibitors is already open, early-bird discounts will be available to exhibitors who confirm their participation by 31 March 2022. Registration dates for buyers and members of the media are as follows:

Delta Premium Select, the airline’s premium economy cabin, includes more space to relax and stretch out with a wider seat, deeper recline and an adjustable footrest and leg rest. Customers will watch Delta’s best-in-class seatback entertainment on larger screens while powering up their own devices with in-seat power and USB ports. They’ll also receive an upgraded amenity kit, noise-canceling headsets and a blanket and memory-foam pillow to help them arrive rested and refreshed. Customers can expect additional enhancements to the Delta Premium Select in-flight experience later this year.

Delta FlyReady℠ – the airline’s digital dashboard solution that helps customers verify they’ve met their destination’s entry requirements prior to travel – was recently updated with an improved experience for customers traveling internationally. The update introduced a more personalized view of travel requirements at the customer’s destination, an all-new design with a more responsive and enhanced interface on mobile, and easier-to-use functionality, allowing customers to better manage their documents.

P&O Ferries suspension – what does it mean for customers? March 2022

cruise news

P&O Ferries suspension

March 18, 2022 – P&O Ferries suspension

A look at how the halting of services will affect those who are planning to travel.

P&O Ferries suspension

All the company’s ferry services are currently suspended. P&O normally operates 14 services a day between Dover and Calais, three between Liverpool and Dublin, and seven on the increasingly important freight route between Larne in County Antrim and Cairnryan in Dumfries and Galloway. There is also normally an overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam. This has been cancelled, along with all other services.

I am due to travel shortly – what do I do?

On the Dover-Calais route there is plenty of capacity for those looking to take a car over to France. Rival operator DFDS has ferries running every 40 minutes or so to Calais or Dunkirk.

P&O ticket holders are being directed to these services, and DFDS is accepting P&O tickets.

In its latest posting, P&O says: “If travelling on our Dover/Calais route please arrive at the port as booked and we will arrange to get you away on an alternative carrier as quickly as possible. Once at the port please make your way to the DFDS check-in booths.”

P&O Ferries suspension: Those hoping to take ferries to Ireland face having to switch ferry company, and to buy a new reservation. Stena Line runs from Cairnryan to Belfast while Irish Ferries operates from Holyhead to Dublin.

Those travelling from Hull to Rotterdam face the biggest disruption and longest drives. Stena offers Harwich to the Hook of Holland – the nearest replacement for those needing to travel urgently. P&O will have to refund passengers for crossings not taken.

What about freight and P&O Cruises?

With not many car drivers travelling on ferries right now, the biggest disruption to services will be to truck operators. Queues of trucks have already built up in Kent. The company accounts for about 15% of UK freight movements so some knock-on effects can be expected, and trade to Ireland will be affected.

P&O Ferries suspension: P&O Cruises is owned by Carnival, and is therefore completely unaffected by this.

How long is this going to last?

P&O has said the disruption will last several days. It is unclear how long it will take the company to remove existing staff who are understandably furious at their treatment.

The RMT union has instructed members to stay onboard their vessels once they have docked or risk being “locked out” of their jobs.

“We are digging in for the long haul. We are determined to fight,” RMT spokesperson Geoff Martin said.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how long it takes the company to train up the new agency staff that have reportedly been brought in to replace them. If other support workers at the affected docks refuse to work with the company, this could easily escalate into a protracted dispute.

I have a booking for my summer holiday or credit voucher I have not yet used – what does this mean to me?

The company is still trading, and has made it very clear that it is not going into liquidation. In theory this means nothing has changed and the company should honour your summer booking and allow passengers to use credit vouchers that they accepted in lieu of cancelled trips last year. If the company did collapse, future reservation and voucher holders would then face a battle to recoup their funds. Travel insurers and credit card companies would be expected to step in for some (but not all) customers.

I am disgusted at the way the company has behaved. Can I cancel my summer booking?

Possibly. Passengers who booked the company’s most expensive Fully Flexi, and the medium priced Standard Flexi tickets are refundable, meaning passengers could cancel without financial penalty. Those who booked the cheapest Saver tickets are stuck with non-refundable tickets. There would be nothing to stop you cancelling but it would be at your expense.

Will the company face a mass boycott?

It is highly likely. By Thursday afternoon many had expressed their outrage on Twitter. Car drivers are important, but for a boycott to really have an effect it would have to include freight operators. They typically care less for employee rights but equally many will be frustrated at the way the company has gone about this. Truck drivers have described waiting hours at Calais with no P&O staff in sight. – P&O Ferries suspension –

Seychelles PCR test

Seychelles PCR test requirement dropped for vaccinated travellers

Seychelles PCR test

March 17 2022 – Seychelles has shifted gear in its reopening and will no longer require visitors to present a negative PCR test.

Seychelles PCR test requirement dropped for vaccinated travellers

Effective immediately, visitors over 18 years, having received the first two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine including a booster dose after six months since completing the primary series, will be considered fully immunised.

All fully immunised visitors will be exempted from pre-travel PCR test requirement.

Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated visitors will be required to present a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours or a rapid antigen test done in a certified laboratory within 24 hours before departure to Seychelles.

Potential visitors having tested positive to the Covid-19 virus – between two to 12 weeks prior to travel – are also exempted from pre-travel Covid-19 testing upon provision of
proof of infection and recovery.

As safe tourism experience remains essential, all visitors will still require travel insurance in addition to their medical insurance cover and are encouraged to book their stay at a certified accommodation.

Moreover, it is mandatory that all visitors apply for a travel authorisation prior to travel.

“The exemption of the PCR test for fully vaccinated visitors is certainly excellent news for Seychelles.

“With restrictions being removed and many destinations reviewing their PCR requirements for entry it was a necessary step for us as a destination to retain the interest of our potential visitors.

“As an industry, we are keeping our commitment towards safe tourism and we should not be complacent and remain vigilant to protect our population and our visitors,” said secretary for tourism, Sherin Francis.

The country has also recently eased other restrictions including the removal of the overnight curfew and closing time for entertainment services such as bars and casinos which became effective on March 1st.
