Kenya has developed a comprehensive strategy to promote the untapped incentive tourism niche and hasten the sector’s revival after a slump occasioned by COVID-19 pandemic, officials said.

Muriuki Mureithi, a senior officer at Kenya National Convention Bureau (KNCB), said the government will tap into local and overseas incentive travelers to boost tourism sector recovery, create jobs and generate revenue to the exchequer.

“We have positioned the country as a safe destination for incentive travel and are confident of its potential to revive the tourism sector that is gradually emerging from pandemic downturn,” said Mureithi in the coastal city of Mombasa during the arrival of a chartered flight from Romania carrying 53 incentive travelers who are slated to visit different scenic attractions in Kenya.

Mureithi said the Romanian tourists who are on a week-long vacation in Kenya will help promote the country as a safe destination after easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

He said Kenya has developed a conducive environment to spur growth of incentive tourism and compete favorably with established markets in Africa including Morocco, Seychelles. And the government will leverage meetings, incentive travel, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) to boost recovery of the tourism sector that contributes about 10 percent to the country’s gross domestic product.

Anghel Cristian-Daniel, general manager of Map Travel that facilitated the arrival of 53 incentive travelers from Romania, said that Kenya remains an attractive destination for overseas tourists amid favorable weather and security.

He said there will be weekly chartered flights from Romania to Kenya with easing of travel restrictions combined with enhanced COVID-19 containment measures.

Jeff Mukolwe, general manager of Swahili Beach Hotel, said the ongoing vaccine rollout in the country has injected confidence in foreign tourists keen to sample beach destinations.

He said the 53 Romanian tourists were the first batch of incentive travelers to visit Kenya since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, adding that the country’s declining COVID-19 caseload was having a positive outcome on the tourism sector.

DumaTau news

Design stories: DumaTau and Little DumaTau, Botswana

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Botswana:

In April 2021, Wilderness Safaris successfully reopened DumaTau – and debuted its new sister camp Little DumaTau – overlooking the Osprey Lagoon in the Linyanti area of northern Botswana. Working alongside the conservation tourism operator’s in-house design and development team, Luxury Frontiers reimagined the architecture, while Artichoke lead interior designer Caline Williams-Wynn and Johannesburg-based artist Gina Waldman overhauled the interiors and art across the intimate scheme, which collectively features just 12 suites, a spa, and a dining and lounge area.

Luxury Frontiers had recently completed a refurbishment of King’s Pool with Wilderness Safaris in 2019 and, upon the success of that project, were fortunately appointed for the redevelopment of the nearby DumaTau camp, also located in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve in Botswana.

It was both the client’s and our goal to maintain the soul and innate beauty of the beloved camp while expanding, upgrading and revitalising its public areas and accommodation units.

The iconic tented silhouette and architecture is the essence of the camp – we didn’t want to change that. So we kept most of the roofs due to the longevity of the canvas that was used for the original lodge.

Adding a new tectonic layer of timber-cladded elements served to create consistency with the areas added to the existing structures.

Oriented towards the north west, DumaTau’s prominent views direct naturally towards the breath-taking lagoon. This position, however, exposes the camp directly to the heat gain from the afternoon sun.

Drawing from the name DumaTau, meaning ‘roar of the lion’, Luxury Frontiers looked towards a lion’s love for lazing in the shade for inspiration. By introducing expansive shaded decks fitted with plunge pools, heat gain is prevented, and sun rays are blocked from entering the internal area.

Aligned with Wilderness Safaris’ emphasis on sustainability and ban on concrete, Luxury Frontiers focused on minimising waste by strategically refitting and reusing existing materials where possible.

The timber decks from the original camp could no longer be used for flooring, thus presenting the ideal opportunity to repurpose this material by adding timber cladding to DumaTau’s tents while retaining their iconic silhouette. Using reclaimed wood juxtaposes the tented façade and retains the tent’s explorer typology.

Luxury Frontiers embraced the timber’s imperfections through a ribbed pattern that highlights the beautifully matured panels and adds texture and depth to the façade. Repurposing the timber from the original DumaTau and the transportation pallets plays a crucial role in limiting the camp’s carbon footprint and adds a deep-rooted sense of place and poetic nostalgia.

DumaTau has long been a guest favourite of Wilderness Safaris, so our intention was not to completely change the camp, but rather enhance what was already there and create a similar experience at Little DumaTau.

Working during the pandemic turned the revitalisation project into an interesting build. Everybody pulled together, and we are humbled to have been able to work with such a stellar team in these trying times.

One of the biggest challenges was navigating the existing structures and adding the required spaces without damaging existing trees. To remedy this challenge, we purposefully designed the new layouts so they could be adapted to mitigate changes onsite.

We started the project towards the end of 2018 and completed it in March of 2021, so the work took two and a half years from start to finish.

We are so thrilled to be a part of the project and work with such amazing partners, including Wilderness Safaris and Artichoke Interiors, with artist Gina Waldman. The media reception has been stellar, with DumaTau listed on AD’s hotel list for Best New Openings 2021.

With the architectural renewal from Luxury Frontiers complete, it’s a new era for DumaTau and its new sister Little DumaTau – one that connects guests to nature through an ongoing dialogue and symbiosis.

Fairmont’s beachfront sanctuary

This 146-key coastal retreat promises to provide a haven of serenity and wellbeing, helped by an impressive array of luxury amenities and memorable views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Located in a picturesque fishing village just 17 km from Agadir in southern Morocco, Fairmont Taghazout Bay unfurls across 18 hectares of beachfront land, and boasts a dazzling collection of rooms, suites and villas.

The property’s distinctive design combines sophistication with authenticity, drawing inspiration from the Amazigh culture. Conceived by Dallas-headquartered design firm HKS, in partnership with Moroccan architect Abdessamad Achrai, the ambitious structure cleverly blends in with its sand-coloured backdrop.

The resort also caters for all the family, not least through the inclusion of a Hangout Teen Club and Fun 4 Kids Club with indoor-outdoor space and a dedicated swimming pool.

Culinary concepts here span four restaurants, two themed bars and a tea lounge with diverse gastronomy.

Guests can dine on modern gastronomy with nomadic concepts at The Commons, try a Moroccan take on surf and turf at Beef & Reef, and experience a fusion of Japanese and American influences at the hotel’s signature restaurant. In addition, the local Gnawa music is fused with jazz at Nola, Juniper offers an outdoor bar experience immersed in botanical surroundings, and the Iris tea lounge serves up speciality teas and pastries with an ocean view.

The Fairmont Spa, meanwhile, covers an area of 1,400 sq m, which encompasses a magnesium swimming pool, and comes with a wellness menu incorporating traditional hammam rituals. There are also fitness facilities and a yoga studio for guests who want to keep active during their stay.

Is summer tourism the salvation for Lebanon’s hospitality operators?

blank

Travel news from around the world

Positive impact from increased visitors offset by mounting operational challenges, according to industry stakeholders

Lebanon’s currency devaluation has made the country’s main tourist attractions, beaches, bars, and restaurants more accessible and affordable

Amidst an increasingly turbulent year, a ray of hope has shone on Lebanon in the form of an influx of expats and tourists benefiting from the collapsed exchange rate, where the lira has lost close to 80 percent of its value, making the country incredibly appealing for those with dollars to spend.

This hope may be short lived, though, as mounting operational challenges overshadow the positive economic impact created by those summer visitors’ spending, F&B and hotel operators told Arabian Business.

Lebanese expats constitute the majority of visitors to the country this season, especially since many had been unable to visit their home country for over a year due to coronavirus restrictions. An estimated 450,000 Lebanese residing in the GCC and Africa have visited Lebanon so far this summer, president of the Lebanese Hotels Association Pierre Achkar told the Kuwait News Agency.

Is summer tourism the salvation for Lebanon’s hospitality operators? – Arabianbusiness

Born during Lebanon’s civil war, Barbar street food expands to Saudi Arabia, UAE

“Those who did not visit Lebanon last year because of Covid-19 came this year and are benefiting from the exchange rate,” said Toni Rizk, CEO of hospitality management company TRI Concepts.

“Although we are increasing our prices (which are in Lebanese lira as per the country’s law) to match the dollar exchange rate, we are still retaining our customers since they find it cheaper than other vacation destinations. If it were not for those expats, we would not have been able to survive the season,” he continued.

Lebanon is facing its worst economic and financial crisis in decades with the lira losing over 90 percent of its value, currently at LL17,850 to the dollar and with fuel shortages and power cuts lasting up to 21-hours-a-day as privately-owned generators are unable to keep up with the demand.

But visitors to Lebanon seem largely undeterred by the dismal situation, instead benefiting from the currency devaluation to enjoy a reasonably-priced vacation.

“At the onset, the hospitality business in general felt that this season would be a good one despite the overall economic downturn. Things picked up well and reservations were up,” said Michel Abchi, chairman and CEO of Admic Sal, a multi-format retail operator based in Lebanon.

Meals in Lebanon’s fanciest restaurants go for little more than $15 per person nowadays

“Aside from the expats, many tourists – some having been to Lebanon before – decided to visit the country this summer. They were lured by the easing or lifting of Covid-19 restrictions and the currency devaluation which made the country’s main tourist attractions, beaches, bars, and restaurants more accessible and affordable” he explained.

Meals in Lebanon’s fanciest restaurants go for little more than $15 per person nowadays, alcohol included.

Visitors from Iraq, Jordan and Egypt are among the main tourists to Lebanon this year, said hospitality operators Arabian Business spoke to.

“Egyptians who would have normally summered in their country’s North Coast are opting to visit Lebanon because it’s become very cheap for them,” said Rizk.

“We have Lebanese expats and long-stayers but we also have European and Arab tourists, a bit of everything. Some of those are coming to the weddings of their Lebanese friends and taking this as an opportunity to explore the country,” said Christine Ozeir, owner of Bossa Nova Beirut Hotel.

Christine Ozeir, owner of Bossa Nova Beirut Hotel

“Despite the challenges, we are seeing a very good summer season and many expats who usually would stay with their families when visiting Lebanon are now opting for hotels because we can secure 24-hours electricity,” she continued.

Close to 700,000 of those residing in Lebanon and who are unable to travel abroad have opted for staycations in the country, thereby increasing hotel occupancy rates, according to Achkar.

As conditions worsen in the country, however, hospitality operators are beginning to feel the pinch.

“Things started to take a downhill turn with the increased electricity shortage, the fuel and petrol disappearing from the stations. It has negatively impacted the positive vibe that existed and now many hospitality operators are faced with total shut down for hours due to lack of electricity,” said Abchi.

“There are also many expats and tourists who are deterred by the lack of medicine and perceived lack of stability in the country and are deciding not to visit Lebanon,” added Ozeir.

Close to 700,000 of those residing in Lebanon and who are unable to travel abroad have opted for staycations in the country

Despite the increase in visitor numbers, hospitality operators are also struggling financially, given the mounting expenses and challenges they are facing.

Although Rizk’s venues have a bigger turnover than last year, the currency devaluation means he is making less revenue now, he revealed. “We are making small margins but at least we are making some money and are able to pay our employees,” said Rizk.

“The increase in activity comes with many challenges, mainly the energy situation in terms of securing diesel for generators and fuel for cars,” said Ozeir.

“Our main challenge is securing everything we need for the comfort of our guests. These are people who are coming here for vacation so we cannot transmit the worries of the country to them,” she explained.

InterContinental Hotels & Resorts brings a new luxury experience to Azerbaijan

IHG Hotels & Resorts, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, has debuted its world-renowned luxury brand InterContinental Hotels & Resorts in Azerbaijan with the recent opening of InterContinental Baku.

The 128-room, new-build property overlooks the scenic Baku Bay, allowing guests to experience the InterContinental Life in luxurious modern surroundings while enjoying mesmerizing views of the Caspian Sea, harbour and Baku’s iconic Flame Towers. The city of Baku is a melting point of architecture inspired by the city’s rich history and seamlessly combines the ancient and modern.

Baku is known for its “oil-boom architecture,” originating from a period of significant economic growth and development in the 19th century. The hotel’s façade is inspired by this style, and the rest of the hotel’s design is inspired by the region’s breath-taking landscape, history, and culture, and interwoven with InterContinental’s modern luxury design to create an air of elegance and contemporary grandeur.

InterContinental Hotels & Resorts is famed for blending international know-how with a city’s cultural heritage and InterContinental Baku is no exception. Guests can become familiar with legendary medieval poet and scientist Nizami Ganjavi who was born in Azerbaijan in the 12th century, considered the greatest romantic epic poet in Persian literature. His greatest collection of poems, Khamsa, is reflected in the hotel’s interior design and inspired the names of different hotel facilities, from the restaurant to the meeting spaces. The hotel features seven floors of elegantly designed guest rooms, an all-day dining restaurant offering a thoughtful balance of local and Mediterranean cuisine and a SPA with indoor pool and hammam. The mezzanine floor features the hotel’s Club InterContinental – named Iksander-nameh after Nizami’s ode to Alexsander the Great – with spectacular views of the Baku Gulf and Caspian Sea and offers signature discreet private check-in and meeting and dining spaces.

The hotel’s 128 contemporary guestrooms, including 6 Junior Suites, blend luxury with technology and comfort. Designed for the needs of the worldly luxury traveller, rooms offer Wi-Fi access and a spacious workspace with task lighting and USB ports, smart touch panels specially designed for a guest’s needs, coffee and tea facilities, and indulgent bedding. The Presidential Suite offers luxury and exclusivity with its own sauna and fitness facilities, along with a spacious private terrace, fully equipped kitchen, two bedrooms and a large living space including a working and dining area.

The Seven Beauties Spa draws its name and aesthetics from a sensual poem written by Nazami in 1197, and the space and treatments are inspired by the area’s rich history and traditions, with beautiful marble tiling and delicate lighting. Guests and visitors are invited to indulge, disconnect, and delight in the indoor swimming pool, sauna, hammam, gym and treatment rooms.

InterContinental Baku’s Khamsa Restaurant showcases and blends Mediterranean and Azerbaijani local culinary gems. Visitors can enjoy a spacious dining atmosphere while tasting the very best locally sourced produce and accompanying the dining experience with a selection of over 50 wines from leading local and internationally recognised wineries. There is also a private dining room available for unforgettable private gatherings and events.

Located in the very centre of Baku, the hotel is adjacent to both the Sahil metro station and the famed 25km-long Seaside Boulevard, which harmoniously connects the unique architectural styles of the urban districts with Icheri Sheher – the Old City – a UNESCO World Heritage site developed from the 6th to the 21st century. Baku Airport is only 25 km away.

Pawel Czerwienka, General Manager of InterContinental Baku commented on the opening: “As the world’s first international luxury hotel brand, with 75 years of pioneering travel across the globe, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts has proudly become an iconic symbol of sophistication and worldliness. The brand is renowned for weaving modern luxury design through its collection of iconic properties and we can’t wait for guests to live the InterContinental Life experience at the brand-new InterContinental Baku.”

The opening is the first in a host of openings for InterContinental Hotels & Resorts in its 75th diamond anniversary year which will celebrate the return of travel. The brand will also see exciting openings in Barcelona, Spain; Grand Ho Tram, Vietnam; Luanda, Angola; Ras Al Khaimah, UAE; Khao Yai, Thailand; Sydney, Australia and Appi Kogen, Japan through the remainder of 2021.

Switzerland Tourism re-launches Million Stars Hotel project

Travel news from around the world

Switzerland:

The Million Stars Hotel offering features “hotel rooms” dotted throughout Switzerland, where guests can experience nature in its purest form – and in an entirely exclusive location meant for two.

The 2021 Million Stars Hotel project includes 50 or so accommodation options that can be found in all Swiss language regions and in 12 tourist regions. Each room offers a direct view of the starry sky from the comfort of the guest’s bed. Of the 50 or so hotel rooms from 2020, two-thirds were included again this year, while the remaining third are entirely new to the Million Stars Hotel project. Almost 40 new accommodation proposals were submitted by tourism providers across Switzerland.

The Million Stars Hotels’ offering will remain open until the end of October 2021 (depending on altitude). Room prices range from CHF 80 to around CHF 1,300 per night for two people, including breakfast.

Travellers looking for luxury and an urban setting should head to the Suite Loft of Hotel Beau Rivage in Geneva. Those looking for something totally remote should opt for an experience under the stars at the Lötschenpasshütte or the panorama tent on the Fronalpstock. For passionate golfers, there is the Golf Night Experience on the edge of the Golf Club di Losone, while one-of-a-kind experiences in the chestnut forest are guaranteed at the Al GÜZ in Bergell.

An official release by Switzerland Tourism states, “In 2020, the Million Stars Hotel generated almost 4,300 overnight stays (50 per cent STC bookings, 40 per cent direct bookings, 10 per cent other booking channels) – mainly by Swiss guests, though notably often from a different language region.

“ST is confident that running this project again in summer and autumn 2021 will now increasingly inspire guests from Europe and other overseas countries to book a special sleeping experience with a view of the stars in Switzerland, insofar as travel is permitted without any severe restrictions.

“Given the broad international coverage of the project last year, the prospects are good: especially in the key foreign market of Germany, there was great media interest, though media in the foreign markets of Korea, Southeast Asia, and North America also reported on the special hotel project.”

Budapest’s Newest Luxury Hotel Is Built Inside a Restored UNESCO Landmark

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Budapest:

The late 19th century was a particularly heady era for Budapest. Elegant architecture was flourishing, and Princess Marie Clotilde of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who resided in Hungary with her husband Archduke Joseph Karl of Austria, wanted to partake in the Belle Époque’s renaissance. With all the fanfare over the forthcoming Elisabeth Bridge linking the Buda and Pest sides of the Danube River, the princess decided to commission a duo of grand, symmetrical buildings poised at the bridge’s Pest-side entrance. And now, after years of neglect, one of those UNESCO-protected structures was just transformed into Matild Palace, the city’s first Luxury Collection hotel. (Klotild Palace, its sibling, will also become part of the Marriott family when it finds new life as a St. Regis in a few years.)

Budapest is strewn with five-star properties like the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, the Aria Hotel Budapest and, most recently, the Párisi Udvar Hotel, which debuted as part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection in 2019. But Matild Palace’s calling card is a deft balance of past and present.

“Matild Palace reimagines its legacy while effortlessly capturing the many facets that make the city so spectacular—the diverse and vibrant culinary offerings, incredible cultural significance and breath taking architecture and design,” Philipp Weghmann, vice president and global brand leader for the Luxury Collection, tells Robb Report. “The building holds the key to the city’s glamorous past, with history found at every turn, and we look forward to welcoming travelers to discover its magic and allure once again.”

Completed in 1902 by the architects Kálmán Giergl and Flóris Korb (who also worked on the New York Palace and the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, both of them Budapest landmarks), the neo-baroque Matild Palace was, by all accounts, stunning. It featured Zsolnay ceramics—even to encase the heaters—and vivid stained glass works by the renowned Hungarian artist Miksa Róth, and was awash in intricate ironwork and moldings. Many of those striking details have now been thoughtfully restored by artisans, under the supervision of London firm MKV Design; you can spy the stained glass on the hotel’s mezzanine level, for example, along with a selection of Zsolnay pieces.

In the 130 guest rooms and suites—which were converted from the apartments where members of the monarchy and upper classes once dwelled—there are jolts of peacock blue and stunning embroidered headboards that reference The Adventures of Sindbad, a Hungarian classic published in 1911 by Gyula Krúdy, one of the writers who frequented the Belvárosi Coffee House literary hangout once housed in the palace.

Most rooms flaunt bathrooms that are brightened by blue and gold tiles—a nod to Budapest’s famous mosaic-covered Gellért Baths—but some are simply swathed in marble, calling to mind hammams. (Guests who want to properly partake of the Turkish hammam ritual can head down to the petite Swan Spa.) Top room options include the Crown Tower Suite, which is carved into the building’s 157-foot-high tower and features a dizzying spiral staircase, and the Maria Klotild Royal Suite, with super-sized living room and panoramic city and river views.

But while Matild Palace celebrates its historic roots, it still manages to feel modern. A selection of slope-roofed Loft category rooms and suites on the fifth floor—a nod to the studio spaces of the artists the princess once patronized—forgo touches like the signature headboards in favour of contemporary artwork and furnishings. And the lobby’s towering vintage photo collage lives alongside a large-scale sculptural chandelier reminiscent of a gleaming snowflake.

Plus, there is the first Central European outpost of Wolfgang Puck’s Spago (the closest other location is in Istanbul). Staying true to the famous brand’s roots, the always-packed restaurant’s sprawling terrace has a distinctly LA vibe, with greenery and coral lounge chairs setting the scene for cocktails and late lunches of spicy lamb sausage pizza. Later this summer, it will be joined by the Duchess, a cocktail bar with a moody jungle aesthetic that will open on the roof.

Even more fitting will be the autumn arrival of Matild Café and Cabaret, which was inspired by the old coffee house stage that was unearthed during the renovation. Intimate musical performances will unfold regularly here—but it will likely be the homemade cakes, served amid glorious period chandeliers, that will plunge guests right back into bygone bohemian days.

“Due to the exposed location in the historical centre of Bratislava, as well as the previous use of the building, its history, and the fact that it is a national cultural monument, the space after reconstruction is suitable for establishing a museum or exhibition spaces,” the city council wrote in its materials.

An enchanting encounter with royalty at Betliar

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Slovakia:

The 50-room home reflects the luxurious life of the aristocracy.

A tragic March 2012 fire destroyed Krásna Hôrka, one of Slovakia’s best castles. It also decreased the number of tourists visiting the nearby elegant chateau Betliar because the two were most frequently visited the same day. This is a shame. The Andrássy family travelled the world, hunted with native tribes, collected rare objects, and their 50-room home reflects the expensive hobbies of its aristocratic owners. It would be a mistake to miss the chateau, a worthy destination on its own and part of the Slovak National Museum.

The chateau’s foundation was laid in the mid-15th century, but what visitors see today is the result of centuries of renovations. The most extensive renovation occurred between 1880 and 1886. The Andrássy family, fleeing the advancing Russian troops, left Betliar in 1944 and the estate was nationalised in 1945. It became a museum in 1953 with the stated goal of showing the public how aristocratic home decor developed in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The property more than meets this goal. It is a veritable Downton Abbey in Slovakia that is frozen in time. Remarkably, none of the furnishings were stolen and the chateau was not damaged or even vandalised during World War II. Tours (about 90 minutes) are offered in various languages, and the atmosphere is intimate with small groups able to get up close and personal with the contents (most of which are described in English).

The chateau’s uniqueness lies in the authenticity of the furnishings, all are original including several 18th century wall hangings. The 18th and 19th century-furnished rooms appear well used and comfortable rather than stuffy and untouchable. When the family bought new furniture, the old furniture was placed in the servant’s quarters, so there are no stark differences in the look of those who lived “upstairs” and those who lived “downstairs”. Although it is grand, the chateau maintains a homey feel.

Family portraits grace the walls with the most impressive hanging in the Family Salon, located near the entrance and reached via the neo-gothic wooden staircase. The impressive library started by Leopold Andrássy and maintained by successive generations of the family contains 15,000 volumes in tall oak bookcases in neo-baroque style. A glance up reveals the Murano glass chandelier.

In keeping with the family’s exotic hunting tastes, various rooms depict the thrill of the kill. One can find the preserved head of an African elephant as well as a water buffalo, a rhinoceros, tortoise and two crocodiles. Two real Egyptian mummies, the sealskin clothes of an Eskimo, and the incomplete outfit and weapons of a Japanese Samurai warrior can be viewed in the “Gallery of Exotic Rarities”. Collections of porcelain, silver and art, among other things, abound.

While there is much to see inside the chateau, look outside to complete the experience. An 57-hectare nature park where landscaping was made a priority from the 16th to 19th centuries reflects the same thoughtful attention to symmetry and beauty with specimen plantings from around the world. The park was entered on the list of Historical Landscape Gardens of the World in 1977, though a windstorm heavily damaged the park in March 2013.

The World’s 7 Most Luxurious Train Rides

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Train Travel:

There is not much that I love better than hopping on a train heading toward a great destination, even better if there are amazing stops along the way, and plenty of pampering involved when on board. With train travel, it is just as much the journey as the destination that matters. In the itineraries listed below, the journey takes precedence over the destination, as a trip on a luxurious train is like flying first class, only for a few days in a row, plus you get to move about and get out for day trips.

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to travel on the Palace on Wheels through northern India with my husband and daughter. We had a great cabin with an en-suite bathroom and a butler dedicated to looking after the three suites in our carriage and who took the opportunity to spoil my daughter rotten. And on day trips, we received preferential treatment everywhere, including being allowed onto the grounds of the Taj Mahal before it opened to the public in the morning.

It was a wonderful week-long journey, and I remember one German couple, who lived in Mexico, and who were on a world circumnavigation by luxury train. They had boarded our train after having just crossed Thailand into Singapore and showed us the most wonderful pictures.

This still remains a dream for me, most likely one that will not happen because however wonderful these journeys are, they also cost a lot more than a normal person’s travel budget will allow, unless for the occasional special treat.

But that is what these luxury train journeys are supposed to be: something to dream about, to aim for, and to plan for an upcoming special treat. So read on and see which train you will board one day.

1. Palace On Wheels, Rajasthan, India
While there are a few more luxury train journeys through India now, taking in different parts of the vast country, this one was the first and is still the best known. The Palace on Wheels sets off from Delhi and stops in the Rajasthani cities of Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Agra, and more, with even an early morning tiger safari along the way.

You will see historic sights such as the pink Palace of the Winds and stop for lunch in former palaces of Maharajas, such as the amazing Palace in the Lake in Udaipur, which many will know from James Bond’s Octopussy. You’ll also visit imposing forts such as the towering Amber Fort before you visit the Taj Mahal at the climax of the journey.

Every day brings another jaw-dropping destination, and the only negative for me was that while you have some time on the train for meals or drinks in the bar, I wished that there was a little more time to enjoy the luxuries of the train itself.

2. Venice Simplon Orient Express, Paris To Istanbul
The Orient Express is synonymous with luxury train travel and going along the old route, which connected Western Europe to the gateway to the Orient in style, is still a journey of a lifetime. The Belmond Venice Simplon Orient Express brings back the glamour of the Golden Days of travel, the style of which is often sadly lacking on many modern journeys, however pricey. On this trip, you will set off from Paris’ Gare de l’ Est, and over a 10-day journey enjoy stops in Budapest, Sinaia, Bucharest, Romania, and Bulgaria before reaching Istanbul. On this trip, the train is the main feature, as you will spend days being pampered with superior food, plenty of champagne, and vistas from the windows as you cross the Alps, follow along the Danube, and see the ever-changing countryside Europe has to offer.

3. Seven Stars, Kyushu, Japan
The southwestern island of Kyushu is known for its stunning volcanic landscape dotted with national parks and hot springs. The Seven Stars train travels through the landscape with thoughtfully planned stops that include a traditional pottery experience and a beautiful lakeside, and an overnight stay in a traditional Ryokan (Japanese inn), depending on whether you choose a 2-day, 1-night or 4-day, 3-night itinerary.

But it is the train that is the most important player on this trip: Custom-built as the world’s most luxurious sleeper train, the seven carriages gleam with wooden parquet flooring, wood paneling interspersed with intricate artisan fretwork, all dotted with the shiny brass logo of the company, and, yes, the en-suite bathrooms feature not only hand-made porcelain basins and separate showers, but also a so-called singing and dancing Japanese toilet.

When in the restaurant car, all plates, or bento-boxes of food are like a piece of art each time and offer the best of Japanese cuisine.

4. El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo, Spain
This luxurious train trip offers you the chance to tick two great journeys in one: Walk the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain, a hard trek allowing you to think and go back to basics, and then, as a reward, take a luxury train back the same way, taking your time, sitting back and enjoying the scenery, without any of the hardship. The journey is an 8-day, 7-night extravaganza connecting the foodie city of San Sebastian with Santiago de Compostela, allowing you to take in numerous stops, including Bilbao, along the way.

5. Blue Train And Rovos Rail, South Africa
In South Africa, along the route between Pretoria and Cape Town, you are torn between a choice of two luxury trains traveling down the exact same route: the Blue Train and Rovos Rail. Both tout themselves as the most luxurious in the world — and both are truly opulent, offering the same stops along the way, such as at Kimberley for the mining museum. Both trains feature rich wood-paneled decor, butler service, fine dining, and luxurious cabins. The main difference seems to be that Rovos Rail takes a day longer to reach Cape Town, making it somewhat more expensive. So which one you choose really depends on whether you want to spend longer on a sumptuous train, looking out at the magnificent African landscapes unfolding before you, or whether two nights on a train are enough.

6. The Ghan, Australia
Traveling right across Australia is a worthwhile, but seriously hard, and at times somewhat tedious, undertaking. Unless you hop on a train, that is. The Ghan train takes you from Adelaide in South Australia to Darwin in the Northern Territory, neatly bisecting Australia. A journey of 3-days, 2-nights through the Outback and the Red Centre, with stops in Marla, Alice Springs, and Katherine. Though not quite as luxurious as some of the trains mentioned here, it makes up for it with scenery and the fact that you are crossing an entire country and continent. That said, the Platinum Service pampers you rather well throughout the journey.

7. Belmond Andean Explorer, Peru
This is one of the highest train journeys in the world, and one of the most elegant. With only 48 passengers maximum on board the Andean Explorer, and two dining and two bar cars looking after them, it features an interior of understated sophistication and colorful hand-woven cushions dotted throughout. There are four different routes to choose from, all lasting one or two nights, making this still a treat, but a more manageable treat. On board, you will dine in style, drink champagne in the piano bar car, and even have access to a spa carriage while enjoying marvelous views of Peru and the Peruvian Andes. From Cusco to Lake Titicaca, you will see Peru from its best side.

Dota 2’s The International will now take place in Bucharest in October

Bucharest:

Dota 2’s prestigious international tournament will be taking place in Bucharest, Romania in October 2021, Valve announced on Wednesday.

The event had been originally set to take place in Stockholm, Sweden in August, but Valve had announced in June it had started looking for other locations because of restrictions on sports events in Sweden.

The rescheduled event, which will be hosted in Bucharest’s Arena Nationala, will kick off on October 7th, with the Group Stage running through October 10th. Main Stage events start on October 12th, and the final match taking place on October 17th. Players will be competing for an eye-poppingly large prize pool of more than $40 million. Tickets aren’t on sale yet, but information about that “will come shortly,” Valve says.

The October event marks The International’s return after a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic. But Valve wasn’t the only company with big news about an esports event on Wednesday; the Call of Duty League announced that its championship weekend, which will be an in-person event at the Galen Centre in Los Angeles, California, will take place starting August 19th.

New Zealand:

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, the world’s largest hotel franchising company and leading provider of hotel management services with 8,900 hotels worldwide, has continued its expansion in New Zealand with the opening of two new hotels, developed by its long-standing development partner, Safari Group.

Within New Zealand, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts operates 15 hotels under three of its distinct brands—Wyndham Garden®, Ramada® by Wyndham, and La Quinta by Wyndham—with locations in Auckland, Queenstown, Christchurch, Albany, Rotorua, Taipa, Hamilton and Wanaka.

The opening of Ramada Suites by Wyndham Taranaki Street Wellington and Ramada by Wyndham Newmarket Auckland marks its 11th hotel developed by the Safari Group in the country.

The new properties add to the company’s growing portfolio in Asia Pacific, with more than 1,500 hotels across 20 markets and territories throughout the South East Asia and Pacific Rim and Greater China sub-regions, making Wyndham Hotels & Resorts one of the largest international hotel chains in the region.

The continued growth of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts in the region provides a network of trusted and world-class accommodation options in key destinations across New Zealand including Auckland, Hamilton, Queenstown, Christchurch, and now Wellington, with Ramada Suites by Wyndham Taranaki Street Wellington, which marks the hotel group’s debut into the capital city.

The two new-construction properties offer a range of hotel, studio and self-contained accommodation options in central locations, close to shopping, dining and entertainment precincts, which are ideal for both business and leisure travellers, seeking long or short-term stays.

Tourism New Zealand’s travel statistics show that the desire for New Zealanders to spend money on domestic travel has increased, with 72 per cent of New Zealanders planning a holiday within their own country this year. This is an increase from 64 per cent in May 2020.

“With New Zealanders seeking domestic travel more than ever, our two new hotels in highly sought-after locations will help cater to the increased number of New Zealand travellers in 2021 looking to explore the best of their own backyard,” said Joon Aun Ooi, President, Asia Pacific, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

“Our ongoing partnership with Safari Group in New Zealand has allowed us to continue to offer accommodation that guests can trust, no matter where they are travelling from and giving them peace of mind in an uncertain travel environment, with the guarantee of flexibility and high-quality accommodation options.”

Robert Neil, Owner, Safari Group added, “We are very pleased to be building even further on our strong partnership with Wyndham Hotels & Resorts as we continue to create properties for business and leisure travellers across New Zealand.”

“The Wyndham Hotels & Resorts brands are synonymous with great value, high-quality accommodation and exceptional customer service. As the largest hotel franchising company in the world, they are well-positioned to provide the essential support from pre-opening to everyday operations, to ensure the best experience possible for guests.”

Ramada by Wyndham Newmarket Auckland will be managed by Accommodation Works Limited, a welcomed addition to the Wyndham Hotels & Resorts family as a new operator strengthening the New Zealand network of owners, operators, and partners.

Ramada Suites by Wyndham Taranaki Street Wellington will be operated by long-term management partner Marsden Group and will mark the eighth Wyndham Hotels & Resorts branded hotel in New Zealand, operated by the Group.

“We truly value and appreciate the ongoing support and loyalty from our established partner Marsden Group, and are pleased to warmly welcome Accommodation Works Limited on our first collaboration with the operator,” said Ben Schumacher, Vice President, Operations, South East Asia and Pacific Rim, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

“We look forward to building on a successful partnership with both operators, continuing to create first-class hospitality experiences for our valued and loyal guests,” he said.

Kazakhstan – a stunning destination with Incredible Petroglyphs

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Kazakhstan:

The real Kazakhstan is stunning and diverse. It is a whole wealth of culture, history, and attractions to see and explore. Its attractions range from the mountains peaking at 23,000 feet on its southern border to the ancient city of Turkistan, to the Soviet/Russia space launch centre, to the unending steppe of Central Asia, to central Central Asian foods, to horse trekking and so so much more. And of course its famous petroglyphs.

Kazakhstan has five UNESCO World Heritage Listed sites – One of which is the petroglyphs. There are around 5,000 petroglyphs at Tamgaly and they are located around 170 km or 105 miles from the main city of Almaty so easy to see in a day excursion.

The Tamgaly petroglyphs are from four different epochs including the Middle Bronze Age, late Bronze Age and transitional period, the early Iron Age, and the Middle Ages and modern times. While the Iron Age petroglyphs are the most numerous, the Middle Bronze Age petroglyphs are of the greatest interest.

These petroglyphs are considered to have the greatest aesthetic and cultural value. They range in size from 25 – 30 cm or 10 to 12 inches. They are mostly engraved into the rock and tend to depict naturalistic images being of anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, and syncretic nature.

The Tamgaly Petroglyphs are not to be confused with the Tamgaly-Tas petroglyphs. These are an easy drive from Almaty with the oldest being Tibetain petroglyphs from the 17th century. If you have time, these are also worth visit. There is also a motorboat on the river to take you across to see them.

As a bonus, you can see the “Krepost Nomad” movie set just across the river. This is a sunning motive set made to replicate a traditional fortified Central Asian city. It is in awesome condition and a stunning and remote location. It’s trippy how much it feels like the real deal.

The mountains are utterly spectacular around Almaty. The mountains around here have hiking trails for everyone, from leisurely strolling to hardcore mountaineering. There is also a major ski resort just up the mountain from Almaty and in the summer you can take its massive cable car to be high and deep in the unspoiled mountains.

While in the city, be sure to visit the public city baths and sauna (called a “Banya”). During the Soviet Union, the Arasan Wellness And Spa of Almaty was one of the very best in the nation. The Russian sauna is incredibly hot and when it is unbearable you jump into the cool pools or plunge into the ice-cold barrels and then repeat. The sauna is separated into men’s and women’s parts and people bathe completely naked.

In Amalty you can try some of the best of Central Asian food. Remember that the history of the Kazakh is nomading across the Steppe like the Mongols. Consequently, the horse is central to their culture, history, and cuisine. In Kazakhstan, the horse is seen more like a stock animal like a sheep or cow than a pet as in the West. The food includes:

In summary, if you come and see the Petroglyphs Of Tamgaly you will be spoilt for plenty more to see and do in this massive and picturesque country that is so often ignored.

Kazakhstan Increases International Air Travel

Kazakhstan:

Kazakhstan’s SCAT Airlines resumed its Aktau – Yerevan route starting June 25. The flights are operated on Fridays on the Bombardier CRJ-200. The tickets are already on sale.

Starting June 23, the airline, which now flies to Turkey, Egypt, Russia, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Georgia, and the United Arab Emirates, also increased the number of flights on the Aktau – Istanbul route. The flights are operated on Wednesdays and Sundays.

On June 21, Kazakhstan’s low-cost airline Fly Arystan started flying to Tashkent from Almaty and Nur-Sultan.

“The unique azure mosques of Samarkand, centuries-old architectural masterpieces of Khiva, ancient citadels and luxurious palaces of Bukhara, historical and modern museums of Tashkent are now even closer,” said the airline in a statement.

From July 14, the airline will launch flights to Kutaisi from Shymkent. Flights will be operated on Wednesdays and on Sundays.

Kazakhstan also resumed its air travel with Warsaw. LOT Polish Airlines resumed flights on June 10 from Nur-Sultan to Warsaw and will fly once a week on Mondays on Boeing-737 aircraft.

As the summer season is close to its peak and the desire of people to travel is stronger after more than a year of the lockdown, the officials still urge people to limit their travel amid the worsening epidemiological situation and the spread of the new Delta variant worldwide.

In 2022 Uzbekistan will see the grand opening of Silk Road Samarkand

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Uzbekistan:

In 2022, Silk Road Samarkand, a multifunctional tourist complex designed to become a modern attraction not only of the city of Samarkand, but also of the entire Central Asia, will be opened for visitors. The complex will combine cultural, gastro, medical and business tourism facilities.

The new complex will house world-class hotels, specialized boutique hotels, contemporary public spaces, parks, recreation and sports areas, authentic restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as an international congress hall and sites of cultural interest. The state-of-the-art project developed by an international team of architects and engineers will allow for combining various thematic zones into a balanced architectural ensemble without parallel in the entire region of Central Asia.

The scale and significance of Silk Road Samarkand are to make it a well-deserved follow-up to the sublime monuments of the past and a driver of tourism development in the region. The name of the center was selected deliberately: the routes of the Great Silk Road passed through the territory of current-day Uzbekistan from the II century BC until the XV century, and ancient Samarkand was one of the most important stops for trade caravans.

The new complex is located in the eastern part of the city and covers an area of about 260 hectares. It centres around the affluent waterway of the Samarkand rowing canal, which in Soviet times served as a training base for the USSR national team and a venue for All-Union competitions.

The complex includes multiple various zones. To the north of the rowing canal is a Business Cluster, including a congress hall and four upscale hotels with beautified territories. The Southern Cluster includes four boutique hotels, each operating in their own medical and sanatorium area of activity, as well as an eco-village, the Eternal City historical and ethnographic complex, and some shopping areas.

Silk Road Samarkand has eight hotels, four each on the northern and southern banks of the rowing canal. They will provide for a total of about 1,200 rooms. To the left of the congress hall, a 22-storey five-star Samarkand Regency Hotel with 234 rooms, including executive suites and two presidential suites, will be put up. This is the first and only hotel in Central Asia being part of LHW, the world’s leading hotels association.

Savitsky Plaza, a hotel named after Igor Savitsky, an honoured artist of the Uzbek SSR and a collector of avant-garde art objects, is distinguished by its one-of-a-kind interior design and has 179 rooms available for the guests.

Other hotels of the highest category include Silk Road by Minyoun with 242 rooms and Stars of Ulugbek by Lia! Minyoun, named after the great astronomer and mathematician of the Timurid era, counting 174 rooms. Both buildings are managed by the leading Asian hotelier Minyoun Hospitality.

All hotels have conference rooms, meeting rooms, restaurants, bars, gyms, SPAs and swimming pools.

At the international congress hall, a multifunctional hall, presidential and VIP halls, rooms for delegations and meeting rooms, as well as banqueting room and exhibition hall will be available.

The medical cluster of Marakanda Park Hotels will be situated to the south of the rowing canal. Each of the four boutique hotels specializes in a certain type of medical services: preventive medicine, detox, joint and spine treatment, and pulmonary medicine. The second floors of the hotels are allocated for health centers. In addition to medical and treatment rooms, the hotel guests will be offered the services of a cosmetician, massage, mud therapy, therapeutic showers, infrared sauna, pressure chamber. The offered programs are developed for 3, 7, 10 and 14 days of stay. The hotels of the cluster will have a total of 366 rooms.

Over more than 10 hectares, the image of an ancient city has been recreated, inviting guests of the resort to experience the history and traditions of the lands and peoples of Uzbekistan. Artists, artisans and craftsmen will “settle” on the narrow streets. Visitors to the city will be offered to try national cuisine from different eras and regions of the country and watch authentic street performances. The Eternal City will provide guests with an exceptional opportunity to find themselves at the borderline of Parthian, Hellenistic and Islamic cultures, and observe the diversity of the bygone centuries’ heritage with their own eyes. The author and curator of the project is the famous modern Uzbek artist Bobur Ismoilov.

Resort guests will enjoy green pedestrian zones, open spaces and a well-designed environment. The entrance will be decorated in traditional motifs reminiscent of the majestic arches of Registan. Sports grounds and bike paths, the Volcano aqua zone with swimming pools and a variety of cafes and bars are sure to become a place of attraction. Bicycle rental will be available.

“Samarkand was a major stop on the Great Silk Road, a place where entire civilizations crossed. We believe that Silk Road Samarkand will become a centre of international tourism, where residents of the city, tourists, travellers and businessmen from all over the world will be able to spend time with pleasure and benefit. I am sure that the opening of the complex will launch a new era in the history of tourism in Samarkand,” said Artiom V. Egikian, CEO of the managing company of Silk Road Samarkand.
