Despite the pandemic, the hospitality industry has remained resilient with a flurry of new openings coming up; hotel operators have also taken this opportunity to refresh their rooms. This is likely driven by demand for domestic staycations, as well as confidence in the recovery of the industry, which is expected to be even more robust in the future due to a pent-up desire to travel.

Several new hotels are looking to make their mark in Singapore come 2022 and 2023. Here, we’ve gathered some exciting hotel openings to anticipate; 2022 can’t come soon enough!

Raffles Sentosa Resort & Spa Singapore
The second Raffles hotel in Singapore is set to open its doors in 2022, more than a century after the iconic national monument first opened in 1887 at Beach Road. Managed by its parent hospitality group Accor, the upcoming Raffles Sentosa Resort & Spa Singapore will feature 61 villas spread across 100,000sqm of verdant tropical gardens.

The resort is set to become the first villa-only hotel in Singapore. Acclaimed international design firm Yabu Pushelberg helmed the design of the resort, carefully crafting the landscaping, lighting and interiors of the idyllic destination. Villas will range in size between 260sqm for one-bedroom villas to 450sqm for four-bedroom villas; each exclusive room will feature a private swimming pool and terrace area that’s shrouded by nature to provide privacy and comfort. Other facilities to expect include a bar, restaurants, a fitness centre and several meeting rooms.

Pan Pacific Orchard

Located conveniently along the stretch of the Orchard Road shopping belt, Pan Pacific Orchard will make its highly-anticipated opening in 2022. This upcoming tropical skyrise will be designed with an eco-conscious approach by local firm WOHA, and it’s set to become a green paradise amidst an urban landscape.

The zero-waste hotel will feature four special levels dedicated to verdant gardens and lush greenery. Besides the sky terraces, the hotel also offers 350 rooms, a gym, swimming pool, bars and restaurants and an exclusive club lounge. Other sustainable elements in the building include a rainwater harvesting system, a recyclable water system, and a compactor that turns food waste into compost, which will eventually be used as fertiliser for the hotel’s sky gardens.

Artyzen Cuscaden

The first Artyzen hotel from Hong Kong-based international hotel group Artyzen Hospitality is slated to welcome guests in 2022. As its name suggests, the new hotel is located along Cuscaden Road and right in the middle of the bustling Orchard shopping district.

Designed by homegrown architect firm Ong&Ong and Australia-based interior design firm Nicholas Graham & Associates, the 20-storey skyscraper features 142 tastefully designed rooms, eight of which are exclusive suites. Each room is designed with a handsome mix of furnishings in warm tones. The hotel will also feature restaurants that feature Peranakan-inspired cuisines, a garden-themed spa, and a rooftop swimming pool where one can admire the scenic city views.

Voco Orchard Singapore

The first Voco hotel in Southeast Asia will open in January 2022 following a rebrand from Hilton Singapore in Orchard Road. InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), which helms the premium hotel chain, announced in June 2021 that the company has signed a partnership with Hilton Singapore to reflag the space as part of IHG’s global expansion.

The 423-room hotel will be designed as a contemporary and inviting space with colourful interiors that exude a cheery atmosphere. With 12 meeting rooms across more than 1,750 sqm, the hotel is also the perfect space to host company events, weddings, and other special occasions.

Pullman Singapore

Another Accor hotel on this list that will be making its debut in 2022 is Singapore’s first Pullman Hotel. Located at Hill Street near Fort Canning, the five-star hotel is developed by EL Development.

The 342-room hotel will be designed in accordance with the international luxury hotel chain’s “work hard, play hard” motto. A reflection of the hotel’s dual concept that offers spaces for both business and leisure, the building will feature executive lounges with sweeping views of the Singapore River and St Andrew’s Cathedral, meeting rooms, a rooftop bar, and a health and fitness centre. Other smart features will also be integrated throughout the hotel to meet the demands of the discerning digital traveller.

The Singapore Edition

Conceived by American hotelier Ian Schrager in partnership with hospitality giant Marriott International, Edition Hotels combine personalised, intimate experiences with the global reach and operational expertise of Marriott. The first Edition hotel will open on our island in 2022, following a delayed opening due to the pandemic.

Located on the former Boulevard Hotel site on Orchard Boulevard, the eight-storey boutique hotel will feature 190 guest rooms. As per all Edition Hotels, each room will be elegantly designed with a sophisticated flair. The overall hotel design will also highlight Singapore’s expertise at merging technology with the arts by infusing futuristic art-like elements throughout the space.

Mondrian Singapore

Singapore’s first Mondrian hotel will make its debut in 2023. A premium hotel brand managed by the Accor group, Mondrian hotels are set in dynamic cultural enclaves around the world. Mondrian Singapore is situated in the heart of the vibrant Duxton Hill neighbourhood.

Developed by Craig Road Property Holdings, the hotel will feature 300 guest rooms and suites housed across several heritage shophouses. DP Architects and Studio Carter will work together to design the three-storey property and infuse it with a contemporary twist alongside heritage-inspired design elements. Other standout highlights in the works within the hotel include restaurants, a speakeasy bar with a hidden entrance, and a rooftop pool.

Monaco: The World’s Richest Country That Is Half A Town On France’s Southern Coast

Monaco is tiny. Really tiny! It is about half a town on the southern coast of France near the border with Italy. Monaco is considered a Principality and is one of the microstates of Europe. Only around a quarter of the population is actually Monaco citizens. It is near the touristic and beautiful southern French city of Nice.

Reminiscent of the HBO series Game Of Thrones, this Principality is ruled by a house – the House of Grimaldi since 1297. Its history and status are very much tied with that of France. France is responsible for the military defence of this country and France must be consulted every time a new ruler is appointed. French citizens are also the largest resident group in Monaco, many of the people working here live in France.

This state is very very small and every square inch of this land has been used – often several times with multiple levels used for different things. For example, a piece of land may have a road and a shopping centre occupying the same space. When we say Monaco is half a town, well it kinda is. The border with France is no demarcated and the border crosses streets and cuts through houses. To know which country you are in, you really need to use your GPS.

The Principality of Monaco is beautiful and is famous for its casinos, gambling, and being the destination of the super-rich. It is common to see mega yachts in its ports.

The Principality has a reputation as a tax haven and has no income tax and has low business taxes. Over 30% of its population are millionaires.

The Principality of Monaco is a beautiful fort and has an old town that you should see. Here you can see the ruins of an old castle. This is called the City Of Monaco and is nicknamed “The Rock”. It is the seat of the Prince and the government buildings.

Prince’s Palace Of Monaco
The Prince’s Palace of Monaco was built nearly a thousand years ago back in 1191 as a Genoese Fortress. It is the official residence of the Sovereign of Monaco. In its history, this palace/fort has been besieged and bombarded by many foreign powers. Over the years the fortress was converted into the palace it is today.

Today, while it is a major tourist attraction, it is also the fully working palace and headquarters of the Prince of Monaco. It has remained the home and base of the ruling family of Monaco for 700 years.

The Monte Carlo Casino
The Monte Carlo Casino is a large casino on the eastern side of the Principality and is a must for those visiting Monaco and are partial to gambling. This is the main gambling site here. Until recently the Monte Carlo Casino was the principal source of revenue for the ruling family and the state.

Fun Fact: Citizens Of Monaco Are Forbidden From Entering The Gaming Grounds Of The Casino

There is little more to do in Monaco. Monaco is a tiny country designed for the mega-rich and for gambling. It is possible to walk the full length and breadth of this country in an afternoon. If you are going to Nice on the south coast of France, then Monaco is a great day trip and one more country you can tick off the bucket list. Unless you can afford very high prices, it’s best to find accommodation nearby in France. Space is very tight in this tiny country.

But it’s fun to see what a tiny Mediterranean country for the mega-rich looks like. The old part of the city is stunning and very much worth a visit. It is easily the most scenic part of the place. There are beaches where you can relax on. It also has a sizeable shopping centre for you to enjoy. Like all Mediterranean cities, Monaco has plenty of cafes and restaurants everywhere.

Most people who spend any amount of time here are the wealthy who come here for gambling and the like.

In short, Monaco is an oddity and a place fun to visit. You can see and do everything here in a single-day trip.

Vilnius And Why This Old Lithuanian City Shouldn’t Be Missed

Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania and it offers a rich experience for those looking to explore the east and Baltics region of Europe. Vilnius is only a small city with a population of around 600,000 but it is the cultural centre and capital of this small country. Vilnius’s Old Town is a UNESCO-listed site. One of the fun things one can do is travel through all three Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia). If you are feeling adventurous then consider taking the ferry from Tallinn, Estonia (another overlooked country) to Helsinki, Finland.

Vilnius was historically part of the Russian empire and as it collapsed in World War One, Vilnius became a contested city between Poland and Lithuania. In the Interwar Period, it was part of Poland. After World War Two it became a part of Lithuania. Additionally, before WW2, Vilnius was one of the main Jewish centers of Europe. The history and architecture are accordingly mixed here.

Lithuanian Song Festival
Part of what triggered the demise of the Soviet Union was the Singing Revolution in the Baltic States. This is where the Baltics peacefully protested Soviet rule by holding hands and singing in defiance of Moscow. Today the Lithuanian Song Festival has become one of the most important events marking their independence. Perhaps something like the 4th Of July in America. There can be as many as 40,000 participants in these singing festivals. They are held once every 4 years, the next one is scheduled for 2022.

Trakai Island Castle
For a great day trip from Vilnius consider visiting the Trakai Island Castle. This magnificent island castle was built around 1409 and only a short drive from Vilnius. This Castle complex is a must-see if you are visiting Vilnius and looks like something straight out of a Disney cartoon. It has been fully rebuilt and lies on an island surrounded by a lake. The whole lake is a stunning park.

The Castle is connected to the mainland by a wooden bridge and is considered one of the national treasures of Lithuania. This is a museum with full exhibitions and so is perfect for learning about Lithuanian history.

In Vilnius, it is best to relax and explore the city while feeling its vibe. If you would like nightlife there’s plenty of that here. Vilnius is a city famous for its artistic flair and one should really see and explore the treasures in this city. Be sure to frequent the many restaurants on the streets in the old city (like other cities in Europe, dining and drinking beer is popular outside).

Gediminas Castle Tower
One of the main landmarks in Vilnius is the Gediminas Castle Tower. This is the remaining part of the Upper Castle in the city and it is considered one of the parts of Lithuania. From here you can have fantastic views of Vilnius and the characteristic red roofs of its Medieval Old Town.

The first castle here was built in the 13th-14th centuries to guard the city, but the original wooden castle burnt down in the 15th century during a fire that ravished the city. The three brick towers and a Gothic palace were rebuilt in its place. The castle is easily reached either by car or by a leisurely stroll up the gentle hill it’s built on.

St. Anne’s Church
One of the more impressive buildings of Vilnius (and included in UNESCO’s list of buildings), is St. Anne’s Church. This is one of the most impressive examples of Gothic architecture in Vilnius and is one of the must-see cathedrals of Europe.

This awe-inspiring church was completed more than 500 years ago back in 1500. According to legend, when Napoleon saw this church during his invasion of Russia, he wanted to carry it back with him to Paris in the palm of his hand.

Cathedral Square
The old city of Vilnius is small and is best discovered by just walking around and seeing visiting the many interesting buildings. One of the more interesting places not to miss out on is the Cathedral Square in the centre of the Old Town. This is the site of many of the national events and festivals like parades, large concerts, New Year’s celebrations, and the like. There is the neo-classical Vilnius Cathedral and its free-standing bell tower. One can consider this the heart of the nation.

In short, there are many things to see and do in Vilnius, and these are just a few of them. The Old City is well worth visiting for a couple of days.

You Don’t Need A Reason To Visit Wroclaw, But Here Are A Few To Convince You

Unlike the more popular countries like the United States of America (USA) that are always on international TV, either on the news or for some other reason, countries like Poland are much quieter countries. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its wonders within its borders.

Located on the Oder River of Western Poland is the city of Wroclaw. This city is famous for many things, two of which are its majestic townhouses and modern fountain.

Tours take you back to the horrors of World War II as tourists explore the German prison camp Stalag Luft 3 and the most brazen prisoner of war jailbreak during World War II. Including the tunnels used for the escape called Tom, Dick, and Harry, respectively of which a legion of 600 men dug in secret preparing for their escape. After a full year of digging, a total of 76 prisoners decided to take their chances through the Harry tunnel on the night of the 24th of March 1944. While this escape was short-lived as 73 of the prisoners were recaptured during the pursuit. An angered Hitler ordered that 50 of them be killed. For 3 prisoners, this was worth it.

Tourist go through the main market square of Wroclaw where they can see the townhouses of the famous Hansel and Gretel. This tour is a fantastic walkthrough of Wroclaw’s history as it also features the Jatki, which is a really old slaughterhouse. It’s pretty much medieval stuff. Visitors also get to see areas of old that were used as a punishing ground for criminals.

This Polish soup is often taken for dinner in Wroclaw. This soup is prepared in different styles so it is up to you to find your preference. The basic ingredients of this soup are pork, special polish sausages, potatoes, eggs, and various vegetables. This meal is indeed a delight and is a must-try while in Wroclaw.

This meal is a delicacy and is a dish local to the people of Wroclaw. The beauty of this dish is that can be prepared in various ways. The different forms of Pierogi are prepared with any of the following: mushrooms, cheese, meat, potato, cabbage, and spinach. The Pierogi has a delicious taste and is a meal you shouldn’t miss while in Wroclaw.

The Riga Jurmala Music Festival opened last weekend 16-18 July 2021 with huge success, being one of the world’s first international music festivals to welcome 100% capacity audiences without masks.

The Festival took the decision to only allow audience members who had been double vaccinated or recently recovered from COVID-19, to allow for maximum numbers of people to enjoy the world-class visiting artists in the safest possible circumstances.

The first weekend saw around 3,500 visitors across the five concerts at Riga’s Great Guild and Jurmala’s Dzintari Concert Hall.

Morocco is a superb touristic country and one of the most popular tourist destinations out there. It is a very friendly tourist country and one that is sure to impress every traveller. It has stunning mountains, beautiful coastlines, old cities, exotic culture, and the vast sand dunes of the Sahara Desert.

Fez Or Fes

Fez is one of the largest cities in Morocco and one of the country’s main tourist destinations. Fez is a very special city for a range of historical and architectural reasons and has been dubbed the “Mecca of the West” and the “Athens of Africa.” Fez is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site and an absolute must-see on any trip to Morocco. One of the main attractions of Fez is the Medina Of Fez.

Marrakech

Marrakech (or Marrakesh) is toward the south and inland in Morocco. It is the gateway to the Sahara. Here you will feel like you are in a traditional and an oasis desert city. Marrakech is well set up for tourism and its desert and Mediterranean architecture is a marvel to behold. The markets, food, and bazaars here are beyond compare.

One thing to keep in mind. In Morocco, if you want to take a picture of someone’s shop or performance, it’s expected to tip or at least buy something.

Tangier

Tangier is the bridge between Spain and Morocco, you can easily take ferries back and forth from here. Tangier has a very beautiful old city built around the old fortifications. Here you can see some of the best of Morrocan architecture and culture. Tangier is a coastal city and from the beaches, you can gaze across the mouth of the Mediterranean to Spain and Gibraltar around 15 miles away.

Casablanca

Casablanca is famous for the old-timey 1942 movie of the same name. This is a beautiful city and well worth a visit. As well as having a beautiful old city center, Casablanca is something of the New York of Morrocco and is the most important financial and productive city. Casablanca also has the busiest airport in the country. It is certainly worth spending a day or two in this historic city.

Rabat

Rabat is the capital city and is a little less touristy than the other cities. It is well worth a visit though. Here you can see the traditional markets and the old coastal castle. It is worth spending a day in the capital, Rabat.

In short, Morocco is absolutely stunning and hospitable country brimming with history and things to see and do. It is also a safe country. But like everywhere in the world, there are some things to keep in mind.

Latvia new flights

Latvian airline airBaltic on July 4 2021 launched new scheduled flights between Riga and Manchester in the United Kingdom. airBaltic now connects both cities with two weekly flights. In addition, as of July 2 airBaltic also connects Riga and Edinburgh twice a week.

Flights between Riga and Manchester are operated by the Airbus A220-300 aircraft. A complete schedule of airBaltic flights and tickets for the new destinations are available on the company’s homepage at Airbaltic.

This summer offers more than 70 direct destinations from Riga, including seven destinations in Italy, seven destinations in Greece and six destinations in Spain in addition to many other leisure destinations.

Copenhagen is a happening city with new hotels and great dining. More hotels are added yearly, here is one of them.

Comwell Copenhagen Portside to open in Nordhavn

In January 2021 the new Nordhavn neighbourhood saw its first hotel when the award-winning Comwell group opened its first hotel in the Danish capital under its own name.

Comwell Copenhagen Portside has been designed by architecture firm, Arkitema Architects, who have drawn inspiration from the harbour’s historic warehouses to create a 493 bedroom hotel with a further 18 conference and meeting rooms. The hotel is close to the new metro station and will have ’green walls’ covered in plants, a roof garden and an atrium garden.

The group have traditionally been known for their premium spa hotels, such as Comwell Kellers Park near Vejle, on the East Jutland coast, which picked up the accolade of Denmark’s best hotel in both the Jutland and Zealand categories at the 2019 Danish Travel Awards.

Pop on personalised flip-flops and head to the magnificent rooftop pool that L-shapes in front of the sun-loungers to deliver a stunning tropical refuge. You don’t even have to lift a finger here; friendly and informed staff are eager to please, and the on-call butler, room turn-downs and beach service add to the sense of luxury.

This converted mansion, once part of a former coffee plantation, is deceptively large, its rustic features preserved and shot through with a dash of contemporary Brazilian style. THE RITZ-CARLTON MELBOURNE

When the Ritz-Carlton Melbourne opens in the heart of the city in mid-2021, it will be the tallest hotel in Australia, with “sky” hotel check-in located on level 79 and 263 luxury rooms with panoramic views of Melbourne. A day spa, restaurants and bars and a 500-seat ballroom will also be part of the property’s offering.

LANGHAM GOLD COAST

The Langham will open its third Australian hotel in late 2021, within AUD $1 billion three tower complex, The Jewel. Alongside 169 rooms, the hotel will feature a spa, restaurants and bars, a sky terrace and a selection of meeting and event spaces, including a 7,534 sq. ft ballroom, capable of hosting 800 people standing.

W SYDNEY

The largest W Hotel in the world is expected to open in Australia in 2022, with the 593-room W Sydney set to debut in new development the Ribbon, a spectacular new addition to Sydney’s skyline in Darling Harbour, close to International Convention Centre Sydney and incentive offerings in the centre of Sydney.

CAPELLA SYDNEY

Capella Sydney will debut within the heritage listed and architecturally iconic sandstone Lands and Education Buildings, just blocks from Sydney Harbour, in 2022. An AUD $300 million development of the buildings will yield the luxury hotel featuring 274 rooms, a spa, a restaurant and bar, event space and a rooftop lounge.

QUEENS WHARF

The AUD $3 billion Queen’s Wharf development is expected to launch in central Brisbane in late 2022. Five hotels opening as part of the development will add more than 1,000 rooms to the city’s inventory, bringing well-known luxury brands to Brisbane, including the Ritz-Carlton and Rosewood and Dorsett Hotels. Queen’s Wharf will also feature a 1,000-seat ballroom and over 50 new restaurants and bars.

Marriott International opens 70th hotel in Japan

Marriott International now has 70 properties in Japan. The hotel group leads with brand offerings in the country and there are still more hotels in the pipeline…

A few months ago, Marriott International opened its 800th hotel in the Asia Pacific region. A few months later, the hotel group announced that it would add 100 new hotels to that impressive portfolio between then and the end of the year.

And now, the hotel group has reached yet another milestone by opening Aloft Osaka Dojima, which becomes the group’s 70th property in Japan. With this opening, Marriott International continues its solid growth in Japan as the hotel chain with the most brand offerings. The company has 70 properties across 18 brands in 21 prefectures including major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, as well as other lesser known gems like Tochigi, Gifu and Wakayama. With a pipeline of more than 30 additional hotels, including three hotels expected to open later this year, the portfolio is poised for continued growth in Japan.

Miss Universe competition to take place in Israel in December

The Miss Universe competition is heading to Israel this year.

Organizers announced Tuesday that the 70th annual competition will be held in Eilat, Israel, in December 2021.

Steve Harvey will return to host the event, which will air live on Fox and Telemundo.

Miss Universe Organization president Paula M. Shugart issued a statement in a press release.

“Israel has been on our shortlist of host countries for a number of years due its rich history, beautiful landscapes, myriad of cultures and appeal as a global tourist destination,” Shugart said.

“We look forward to deepening our commitment and creating meaningful cultural conversation, connection and understanding through this partnership,” she added.

The three-hour event will see contestants compete in multiple categories, including personal statement, swimsuit, evening gown and interview. The competition will culminate with Mexico’s Andrea Meza, who won the 2020 competition, crowning her successor.

“Being the only Miss Universe crowned during the COVID-19 pandemic has made my reign unforgettable,” Meza said. “I hope that the world takes the vaccine as soon as it is available so that, come December, as many people as possible can join the 70th anniversary celebration in Israel.”

Ahead of the competition, contestants will explore “the rich history and culture” of Israel with visits to notable locations. In addition, Meza will visit Israel later this summer.

Built in 1793, and originally belonging to a noble family, the building slowly began to sink. Luckily, after a major restoration project, the building ceased to fall, and became home to Tartu’s impressive art collection.
