New Zealand:

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, the world’s largest hotel franchising company and leading provider of hotel management services with 8,900 hotels worldwide, has continued its expansion in New Zealand with the opening of two new hotels, developed by its long-standing development partner, Safari Group.

Within New Zealand, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts operates 15 hotels under three of its distinct brands—Wyndham Garden®, Ramada® by Wyndham, and La Quinta by Wyndham—with locations in Auckland, Queenstown, Christchurch, Albany, Rotorua, Taipa, Hamilton and Wanaka.

The opening of Ramada Suites by Wyndham Taranaki Street Wellington and Ramada by Wyndham Newmarket Auckland marks its 11th hotel developed by the Safari Group in the country.

The new properties add to the company’s growing portfolio in Asia Pacific, with more than 1,500 hotels across 20 markets and territories throughout the South East Asia and Pacific Rim and Greater China sub-regions, making Wyndham Hotels & Resorts one of the largest international hotel chains in the region.

The continued growth of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts in the region provides a network of trusted and world-class accommodation options in key destinations across New Zealand including Auckland, Hamilton, Queenstown, Christchurch, and now Wellington, with Ramada Suites by Wyndham Taranaki Street Wellington, which marks the hotel group’s debut into the capital city.

The two new-construction properties offer a range of hotel, studio and self-contained accommodation options in central locations, close to shopping, dining and entertainment precincts, which are ideal for both business and leisure travellers, seeking long or short-term stays.

Tourism New Zealand’s travel statistics show that the desire for New Zealanders to spend money on domestic travel has increased, with 72 per cent of New Zealanders planning a holiday within their own country this year. This is an increase from 64 per cent in May 2020.

“With New Zealanders seeking domestic travel more than ever, our two new hotels in highly sought-after locations will help cater to the increased number of New Zealand travellers in 2021 looking to explore the best of their own backyard,” said Joon Aun Ooi, President, Asia Pacific, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

“Our ongoing partnership with Safari Group in New Zealand has allowed us to continue to offer accommodation that guests can trust, no matter where they are travelling from and giving them peace of mind in an uncertain travel environment, with the guarantee of flexibility and high-quality accommodation options.”

Robert Neil, Owner, Safari Group added, “We are very pleased to be building even further on our strong partnership with Wyndham Hotels & Resorts as we continue to create properties for business and leisure travellers across New Zealand.”

“The Wyndham Hotels & Resorts brands are synonymous with great value, high-quality accommodation and exceptional customer service. As the largest hotel franchising company in the world, they are well-positioned to provide the essential support from pre-opening to everyday operations, to ensure the best experience possible for guests.”

Ramada by Wyndham Newmarket Auckland will be managed by Accommodation Works Limited, a welcomed addition to the Wyndham Hotels & Resorts family as a new operator strengthening the New Zealand network of owners, operators, and partners.

Ramada Suites by Wyndham Taranaki Street Wellington will be operated by long-term management partner Marsden Group and will mark the eighth Wyndham Hotels & Resorts branded hotel in New Zealand, operated by the Group.

“We truly value and appreciate the ongoing support and loyalty from our established partner Marsden Group, and are pleased to warmly welcome Accommodation Works Limited on our first collaboration with the operator,” said Ben Schumacher, Vice President, Operations, South East Asia and Pacific Rim, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

“We look forward to building on a successful partnership with both operators, continuing to create first-class hospitality experiences for our valued and loyal guests,” he said.

Kazakhstan – a stunning destination with Incredible Petroglyphs

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Kazakhstan:

The real Kazakhstan is stunning and diverse. It is a whole wealth of culture, history, and attractions to see and explore. Its attractions range from the mountains peaking at 23,000 feet on its southern border to the ancient city of Turkistan, to the Soviet/Russia space launch centre, to the unending steppe of Central Asia, to central Central Asian foods, to horse trekking and so so much more. And of course its famous petroglyphs.

Kazakhstan has five UNESCO World Heritage Listed sites – One of which is the petroglyphs. There are around 5,000 petroglyphs at Tamgaly and they are located around 170 km or 105 miles from the main city of Almaty so easy to see in a day excursion.

The Tamgaly petroglyphs are from four different epochs including the Middle Bronze Age, late Bronze Age and transitional period, the early Iron Age, and the Middle Ages and modern times. While the Iron Age petroglyphs are the most numerous, the Middle Bronze Age petroglyphs are of the greatest interest.

These petroglyphs are considered to have the greatest aesthetic and cultural value. They range in size from 25 – 30 cm or 10 to 12 inches. They are mostly engraved into the rock and tend to depict naturalistic images being of anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, and syncretic nature.

The Tamgaly Petroglyphs are not to be confused with the Tamgaly-Tas petroglyphs. These are an easy drive from Almaty with the oldest being Tibetain petroglyphs from the 17th century. If you have time, these are also worth visit. There is also a motorboat on the river to take you across to see them.

As a bonus, you can see the “Krepost Nomad” movie set just across the river. This is a sunning motive set made to replicate a traditional fortified Central Asian city. It is in awesome condition and a stunning and remote location. It’s trippy how much it feels like the real deal.

The mountains are utterly spectacular around Almaty. The mountains around here have hiking trails for everyone, from leisurely strolling to hardcore mountaineering. There is also a major ski resort just up the mountain from Almaty and in the summer you can take its massive cable car to be high and deep in the unspoiled mountains.

While in the city, be sure to visit the public city baths and sauna (called a “Banya”). During the Soviet Union, the Arasan Wellness And Spa of Almaty was one of the very best in the nation. The Russian sauna is incredibly hot and when it is unbearable you jump into the cool pools or plunge into the ice-cold barrels and then repeat. The sauna is separated into men’s and women’s parts and people bathe completely naked.

In Amalty you can try some of the best of Central Asian food. Remember that the history of the Kazakh is nomading across the Steppe like the Mongols. Consequently, the horse is central to their culture, history, and cuisine. In Kazakhstan, the horse is seen more like a stock animal like a sheep or cow than a pet as in the West. The food includes:

In summary, if you come and see the Petroglyphs Of Tamgaly you will be spoilt for plenty more to see and do in this massive and picturesque country that is so often ignored.

Kazakhstan:

Kazakhstan’s SCAT Airlines resumed its Aktau – Yerevan route starting June 25. The flights are operated on Fridays on the Bombardier CRJ-200. The tickets are already on sale.

Starting June 23, the airline, which now flies to Turkey, Egypt, Russia, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Georgia, and the United Arab Emirates, also increased the number of flights on the Aktau – Istanbul route. The flights are operated on Wednesdays and Sundays.

On June 21, Kazakhstan’s low-cost airline Fly Arystan started flying to Tashkent from Almaty and Nur-Sultan.

“The unique azure mosques of Samarkand, centuries-old architectural masterpieces of Khiva, ancient citadels and luxurious palaces of Bukhara, historical and modern museums of Tashkent are now even closer,” said the airline in a statement.

From July 14, the airline will launch flights to Kutaisi from Shymkent. Flights will be operated on Wednesdays and on Sundays.

Kazakhstan also resumed its air travel with Warsaw. LOT Polish Airlines resumed flights on June 10 from Nur-Sultan to Warsaw and will fly once a week on Mondays on Boeing-737 aircraft.

As the summer season is close to its peak and the desire of people to travel is stronger after more than a year of the lockdown, the officials still urge people to limit their travel amid the worsening epidemiological situation and the spread of the new Delta variant worldwide.

In 2022 Uzbekistan will see the grand opening of Silk Road Samarkand

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Uzbekistan:

In 2022, Silk Road Samarkand, a multifunctional tourist complex designed to become a modern attraction not only of the city of Samarkand, but also of the entire Central Asia, will be opened for visitors. The complex will combine cultural, gastro, medical and business tourism facilities.

The new complex will house world-class hotels, specialized boutique hotels, contemporary public spaces, parks, recreation and sports areas, authentic restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as an international congress hall and sites of cultural interest. The state-of-the-art project developed by an international team of architects and engineers will allow for combining various thematic zones into a balanced architectural ensemble without parallel in the entire region of Central Asia.

The scale and significance of Silk Road Samarkand are to make it a well-deserved follow-up to the sublime monuments of the past and a driver of tourism development in the region. The name of the center was selected deliberately: the routes of the Great Silk Road passed through the territory of current-day Uzbekistan from the II century BC until the XV century, and ancient Samarkand was one of the most important stops for trade caravans.

The new complex is located in the eastern part of the city and covers an area of about 260 hectares. It centres around the affluent waterway of the Samarkand rowing canal, which in Soviet times served as a training base for the USSR national team and a venue for All-Union competitions.

The complex includes multiple various zones. To the north of the rowing canal is a Business Cluster, including a congress hall and four upscale hotels with beautified territories. The Southern Cluster includes four boutique hotels, each operating in their own medical and sanatorium area of activity, as well as an eco-village, the Eternal City historical and ethnographic complex, and some shopping areas.

Silk Road Samarkand has eight hotels, four each on the northern and southern banks of the rowing canal. They will provide for a total of about 1,200 rooms. To the left of the congress hall, a 22-storey five-star Samarkand Regency Hotel with 234 rooms, including executive suites and two presidential suites, will be put up. This is the first and only hotel in Central Asia being part of LHW, the world’s leading hotels association.

Savitsky Plaza, a hotel named after Igor Savitsky, an honoured artist of the Uzbek SSR and a collector of avant-garde art objects, is distinguished by its one-of-a-kind interior design and has 179 rooms available for the guests.

Other hotels of the highest category include Silk Road by Minyoun with 242 rooms and Stars of Ulugbek by Lia! Minyoun, named after the great astronomer and mathematician of the Timurid era, counting 174 rooms. Both buildings are managed by the leading Asian hotelier Minyoun Hospitality.

All hotels have conference rooms, meeting rooms, restaurants, bars, gyms, SPAs and swimming pools.

At the international congress hall, a multifunctional hall, presidential and VIP halls, rooms for delegations and meeting rooms, as well as banqueting room and exhibition hall will be available.

The medical cluster of Marakanda Park Hotels will be situated to the south of the rowing canal. Each of the four boutique hotels specializes in a certain type of medical services: preventive medicine, detox, joint and spine treatment, and pulmonary medicine. The second floors of the hotels are allocated for health centers. In addition to medical and treatment rooms, the hotel guests will be offered the services of a cosmetician, massage, mud therapy, therapeutic showers, infrared sauna, pressure chamber. The offered programs are developed for 3, 7, 10 and 14 days of stay. The hotels of the cluster will have a total of 366 rooms.

Over more than 10 hectares, the image of an ancient city has been recreated, inviting guests of the resort to experience the history and traditions of the lands and peoples of Uzbekistan. Artists, artisans and craftsmen will “settle” on the narrow streets. Visitors to the city will be offered to try national cuisine from different eras and regions of the country and watch authentic street performances. The Eternal City will provide guests with an exceptional opportunity to find themselves at the borderline of Parthian, Hellenistic and Islamic cultures, and observe the diversity of the bygone centuries’ heritage with their own eyes. The author and curator of the project is the famous modern Uzbek artist Bobur Ismoilov.

Resort guests will enjoy green pedestrian zones, open spaces and a well-designed environment. The entrance will be decorated in traditional motifs reminiscent of the majestic arches of Registan. Sports grounds and bike paths, the Volcano aqua zone with swimming pools and a variety of cafes and bars are sure to become a place of attraction. Bicycle rental will be available.

“Samarkand was a major stop on the Great Silk Road, a place where entire civilizations crossed. We believe that Silk Road Samarkand will become a centre of international tourism, where residents of the city, tourists, travellers and businessmen from all over the world will be able to spend time with pleasure and benefit. I am sure that the opening of the complex will launch a new era in the history of tourism in Samarkand,” said Artiom V. Egikian, CEO of the managing company of Silk Road Samarkand.

Zanzibar:

Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi supported organizers of the annual Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) and said the event would expose and develop the island’s tourism and heritage.

ZIFF is one of among Africa’s premier film festivals, marking it as an important event.
President Mwinyi said at the Zanzibar State House that the festival will help to develop and advertise Zanzibar’s tourism.

Mwinyi confirmed that the government will continue working together with ZIFF to ensure it continues to attain more achievements.

The Zanzibar International Film Festival was launched 24 years ago with great success in Zanzibar. This year’s event will be taking place from July 21 to 25 at Stone Town, Zanzibar’s leading tourist hot spot and a tourist heritage site.

Organizers of this year’s ZIFF have attracted over 240 films from 25 countries. Tanzania has 13 films while Kenya has 9, Uganda 5, and South Africa 5.

There are 67 films selected for screening this year, with 10 feature films, 5 feature documentaries, and 40 short films and animations in competition, ZIFF Director Professor Martin Muhando said.

“This year, we received over 240 films in total. We received films from 25 countries including for the first time a film from Estonia,” he added.

The festival aims to raise awareness and promote international cinema as art, entertainment, and as an industry, promoting dialogue, human rights, and freedom.

Through its programs, the festival reaches a wide variety of audiences, which is what makes ZIFF different.

Prof. Muhando said the festival makes a huge contribution towards a better understanding of cinema through its public forums, community screenings, and music and art platforms.

Four Seasons Hotel Milano Reopens After Renovation

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Italy:

Four Seasons Hotel Milano has reopened in the heart of Milan’s fashion district following a six-month renovation, unveiling renewed spaces with contemporary interiors by designer and architect Patricia Urquiola. Situated in a former 15th-century convent, Four Seasons Hotel Milano, which first opened its doors in 1993, has transformed its lobby area, restaurant, bar and garden in the first phase of renovation.

In the lobby, guests can expect a new, lighter paint job, bronze inserts and mirrors—all intended to “interplay with the original frescoes and period features of the former convent.” There’s also a variety of new hanging lamps, table lamps and floor lighting. Furniture classics from Italian design brands decorate the areas.

New Dining

Through the lobby, guests reach Zelo, the new restaurant helmed by Executive Chef Fabrizio Borraccino. During the day, the restaurant changes its identity to Zelo Bistrot, and the expanded outdoor area allows for seating both inside and out. Zelo Bistrot offers a menu of light dishes, while in the evening, Zelo proposes both an à la carte menu as well as a tasting menu of the chef’s creations. The menu, Four Seasons says, has been completely redone to reflect guests’ evolving tastes and Chef Borraccino’s focus on Italian cuisine and the best local producers.

Stilla, the new bar, is positioned to the left of the lobby. The circular bar is appointed with cognac leather armchairs and velvet seating and sofas in shades of red and dark green. Guests can also sit outside in the hotel’s garden. The new menu created by Bar Manager Luca Angeli offers innovative new signature drinks and has a focus on ice craftsmanship. The menu has everything from Aeropress American coffee to a classic club sandwich to Negroni Sbagliato. Health-conscious guests can look forward to light plates and salads.

The Camino—the Italian word for fireplace—has also been transformed into a lounge with a wine cellar/tasting room. Here, guests can experience sommelier Lorenza Panzera’s wine list while listening to the beats of a DJ seat.

The Garden. The hotel’s cloister garden, which hosts seating areas for both Stilla and Zelo, has been renewed by landscape architect and agronomist Flavio Pollano, an expert in vertical green, botanics and garden design. The garden will also host a new raw bar, where guests can enjoy food and drinks on summer evenings while listening to the tunes of a DJ.

The renovated areas also feature curated contemporary artwork selected to interplay with the hotel’s past.

With this first phase of renovation completed, Four Seasons Hotel Milano reopens its doors while embarking on the phased renovation of rooms, suites and meeting areas.

The Carlton Tower Jumeirah Opens Following Complete Renovation

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

London:

The Carlton Tower Jumeirah has opened in the heart of London’s fashionable Knightsbridge district following a $137 million, 18-month renovation, which refreshed the rooms and added new dining choices, spa and lobby entrance.

Previously known as Jumeirah Carlton Tower, The Carlton Tower Jumeirah has launched under a new name to reflect the significance of the most extensive transformation in its history.

Originally designed 60 years ago by Henry End, also responsible for the interiors of New York’s Plaza Hotel, the five-star property was redesigned by 1508 London. While respecting the building’s original, clean modernist style, the design studio layered an eclectic mix inspired by the architecture of surrounding mansion blocks and homes with soft curved edges, pops of bright colour and organic inspired forms throughout.

Among the changes, there is a new foyer and reception, health club and spa with London’s “largest naturally lit swimming pool,” flagship restaurant, lobby bar and lounge, ballroom and meeting rooms.

The number of rooms has been reduced from 216 to 186 to allow more space and natural light. Of these, 87 rooms have balconies offering views of the city. The new Royal Suite is the hotel’s most exclusive residence with three bedrooms and comes with an option to privatize the entire floor.

The destination restaurant Al Mare, meaning “at the sea” in Italian, offers a sophisticated yet informal dining experience for guests. Head Chef Marco Calenzo, who has previously worked in Michelin stars from Tokyo to Hawaii, draws from his Italian heritage to design the menu of light and modern Italian fare complemented by a wine list and artisanal cocktails. Accessed from the lobby is The Chinoiserie, an all-day dining area that won the “Afternoon Tea of the Year” award in 2018. The hotel has also partnered with Annabel Karmel, an award-winning children’s cookery and nutrition expert based in the U.K., to design children’s menus at both restaurants.

The Peak Fitness Club & Spa, covering three floors of the hotel, has been completely redesigned with new treatment rooms at the Talise Spa and a revitalized swimming pool with new cabanas and thermal areas. The gym overlooks the city and offers studio classes and latest exercise equipment. In addition, the hotel sits on Cadogen Gardens, which offers a lush and private green space for additional wellness recreation such as yoga and tennis.

How to Pretend You’re in Dakar Today

blank

Travel news from around the world

Senegal:

There is a bar in the Senegalese capital of Dakar that you can only find if someone has pointed the way. It sits on a thin strip of beach, with a wide view of the Atlantic Ocean and the young surfers who chase waves as the sun sets in the distance. It sits below the Mamelles Lighthouse, which offers tours during the day and turns into a nightclub after dark. None of the furniture in the open-air bar matches. The five-minute walk to the cove, down a thin dirt path that snakes from a chaotic intersection — horse-drawn carts and shiny S.U.V.s competing for space on packed roads — feels like passing through a portal between worlds.

Dakar has an aura that seeps into your soul. The sensations — the smell of grilled fish and spiced coffee, the feeling of an impending downpour, the bone-rattling vibrations from a dozen drums — stay with you long after you leave. When I visited this West African city, as part of my journey around the world as the 52 Places Traveller, I often caught myself thinking of my future. As I walked through markets that seemingly went on forever or sat on the deck of a ferry as it floated away from the mainland to one of the outlying islands, I thought, “I could live here.” And while it is impossible to fully experience without making the trip, there are ways to capture at least a sliver of the magic.

Divali, the Festival of Lights in Mauritius

Travel news from around the world

Mauritius:

Divali, the festival of lights, is one of the biggest Hindu festivals where they celebrate the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. Divali, also called Diwali or Dipavali, is celebrated by Mauritians of Hindu faith and is celebrated between the months of October and November.

On this special occasion, the devotees clean and decorate their homes, wear new clothes and offer sweet cakes and treats to neighbours, friends and family. The act of sharing is to strengthen the bonds of affection. Everywhere around the island, once the sun sets, the festival of lights is in full swing. An abundance of colourful garlands and small traditional clay lamps are lit. Some houses have fairy lights and an extravagant set up as well, making them seem quite magical.

The night of Divali is special, everyone will be out in the streets walking and you can feel the joyful atmosphere. Mauritians, not only of the Hindu faith will go out to admire the illuminated houses. And of course the walk will be filled with the sharing of sweet treats.

Divali, the Festival of Lights in Mauritius – Mauritius Attractions

Why is Divali Celebrated

As mentioned, Divali symbolises the victory of good over evil. The celebration marks the victory of Rama (incarnation of Hindu god Vishnu) on the Ravana demon and his return to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile.

Divali derives from the sanskrit word Dipavali, meaning row of lights. According to legends, the path to the Kingdom of Ayodhya is illuminated to mark the return of Rama to the kingdom.

The celebration also honours the goddess Laksmi, who characterises prosperity and wealth. To welcome the goddess, the devotees will pray in her honour and will also draw rangolis in front of their door.

Colombia:

The management of the FIEXPO Latin America meetings industry show, in conjunction with the Colombian authorities, has announced a decision to move the event from June to new dates straight after the planned International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Congress in Cartagena in October 2021.

FIEXPO will now run 27-30 October, 2021, following the ICCA Congress (24-27 October), at Las Americas Convention Centre in the Colombian coastal city.

Cartagena will, for one week, host two of the industry’s most important global events.

“We have taken this decision prioritising the health and safety of all participants and taking into account the start of vaccination worldwide in the coming months, which will undoubtedly mean a new stage in the reactivation of activities in the sector,” a statement from the FIEXPO organisers said.

FIEXPO Latin America has built a leading MICE industry event in Latin America and the Caribbean for business meetings, high level educational sessions, and exceptional social events.

“The Politicians Forum convenes the highest authorities of Latin America tourism,” the organisers added, saying it represented a unique and fundamental opportunity to discuss and debate policies and actions across the public and private sectors.

“We are eager to meet again with our exhibitors, buyers, and colleagues, who trust in FIEXPO year after year and who are the ones who represent and make our industry great,” the statement continued.

“For this reason, during the coming months, the FIEXPO team will be working with commitment to prepare a special edition to receive them in October 2021 in Cartagena.”
