October 12, 2021 –

The 92-key Henn na New York brings something different to one of the world’s most competitive hospitality markets.

Entering the US in style

Venturing out of Japan for the very first time, Henn na Hotel Group has made its international debut with the launch of a fun scheme at 235 West 35th Street in the US’ largest city. Henn na New York, which opened on 1 October 2021, joins the 20 other properties in its portfolio, offering a stylish and tech-forward stay paired with playful hospitality experiences.

Located at the point that some of the city’s most dynamic neighbourhoods meet, the hotel provides easy access to the Garment District, Hudson Yards and High Line Park, as well as Midtown Manhattan. Its 92 king and double guestrooms and Gosuke restaurant are accompanied by a signature feature of Henn na Hotels, a five-foot animatronic T-Rex model prominently positioned in the lobby.

Impressive Japanese amenities

The accommodation here is designed for both business and leisure travellers, with amenities including deep tubs, streaming TV, wifi, CO Bigelow bath products, luxury Kassatex linens and kimono waffle robes, as well as Toto Washlets in all the bathrooms. Executive rooms and suites come with LG Styler Closets for steaming and refreshing clothes, and suites also feature deep-soaking tubs and private balconies.

Guests and locals can dine at the first-floor Japanese restaurant, Gosuke, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner each day of the week. Acclaimed executive chef Isami Nagai is behind the culinary offering, which encompasses fresh sushi, sashimi and other authentic Japanese specialties.

Henn na Hotels is known for pioneering the robot hotel trend in Japan, with animatronic hosts undertaking basic functions such as guest check-in and luggage storage. In New York, however, real people will look after the front desk and other guest services.

Lotte Hotel accredited with ‘GBAC STAR’ by ISSA

October 12, 2021 –

LOTTE HOTEL, the first Korean hotel brand to achieve GBAC STAR for all its five-star hotels. All hotels are equipped with strict hygiene systems to prevent diseases spreading.

The catchword for V-nomics of the post-pandemic era is safety. Global chain hotels have introduced services befitting the new normal by establishing hygiene systems and preventive measures, and by offering contactless services.

According to a survey conducted by Expedia Group in July, travellers prioritised hygiene conditions, preventive measures and contactless services when planning their trips. Whilst the expectation for safety standards continues to grow higher, the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR certification achieved by LOTTE HOTEL, the largest hotel group in Korea, draws attention.

In December 2020, the hotels SIGNIEL Seoul, SIGNIEL Busan as well as LOTTE HOTEL Seoul, LOTTE HOTEL World, LOTTE HOTEL Jeju and LOTTE HOTEL Ulsan have achieved the GBAC STAR certification from International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA). The first accreditation was given to SIGNIEL Seoul in November 2020, followed by all five-star LOTTE HOTELS in Korea’s international acknowledgement.

ISSA is the most reputable worldwide association for hygiene industry, located in Northbrook, Illinois. GBAC STAR is the accreditation for hotels, restaurants and other public facilities that strictly abide by hygiene regulations and have preventive systems.

Facilities are systematically evaluated based on 20 strict global standards concerned with cleaning, disinfection and preventive programmes. The evaluation is conducted by the Global Biorisk Advisory Council, comprising experts in biorisk field.

“The GBAC STAR certification is a global accreditation for disinfection system within a facility,” said a LOTTE HOTEL spokesperson. “A facility accredited with this certification constantly cleans and disinfects to the degree that of a hospital.”

Like this, LOTTE HOTEL has fortified disinfection and hygiene management to ensure guests’ safety against virus and contamination. In August 2020, ISSA experts gave consultation by checking on cleaning, disinfection and preventive standards through hotel inspection.

In general, hotels regularly disinfect those that are in frequent reach such as door handles, remote controllers and faucets when housekeeping. In addition to regular cleaning, LOTTE HOTEL disinfects all surfaces that come into contact with people, including tables and floors, using disinfectants for Covid19 recommended by the American EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), thus preventing cross-infection. The cleanliness of all contact surfaces is strictly controlled with regular ATP tests that measure microorganisms.

David HS Kim, CEO of LOTTE HOTEL said: “Since achieving the internationally accredited Food Safety Management System (ISO22000) certification for the first time for a Korean hotel brand in 2015, LOTTE HOTEL has been strictly managing safety and hygiene abiding by global standards. Based on our brilliant performances and know-how accumulated over the past 40 years, LOTTE HOTEL will continue to propose new prospects in hotel services in the post-pandemic era.”

IHG Hotels & resorts announces Holiday Inn signing in Dandenong, Australia

hotel news

October 11, 2021 – IHG Hotels & Resorts is excited to be continuing its push into suburban and regional Victoria with the signing of Holiday Inn Dandenong with hotel owners, the Pelligra Group.

This will be IHG’s fifth hotel with the Pelligra Group, making them one of IHG’s largest owners in Australasia. It signifies the continued, successful partnership between the two groups, building on other open or signed hotels which include Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport, the newly opened Holiday Inn Werribee, and upcoming Holiday Inn Melbourne Richmond and Crowne Plaza Melbourne Carlton.

Formerly the Ramada Encore by Wyndham Dandenong, the hotel will undergo a state-of-the-art $10m refurbishment, before opening as a next-generation Holiday Inn in April 2022. The news continues IHG’s rapid growth across Victoria, following the opening of Holiday Inn Werribee and upcoming Holiday Inn openings in Geelong, Ringwood, Richmond, Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall and Ballarat.

Once open, all of the hotel’s 108 guestrooms will receive a major refurbishment and an additional 18 new rooms added, and the lobby will be completely transformed, incorporating Holiday Inn’s Open Lobby cutting edge concept, designed to bring people together in a convivial setting.

Holiday Inn will add significant value to the property post transformation, taking it from a limited-service hotel to a completely refreshed, full-service upper midscale positioning under the much loved and globally recognised Holiday Inn banner

Located around 30 kilometres from Melbourne, Holiday Inn Dandenong is set to be a central hub for visitors in a growing area, bustling with new infrastructure projects, big business headquarters, universities and potentially a new, $110m 15,00-seat sports stadium and events centre.

In 2006, a 15-year, $290m ‘Revitalising Central Dandenong’ (RCD) program was announced by the Victorian Government aimed at improving the general amenity of the Dandenong CBD and re-establishing Dandenong city centre as the capital of Melbourne’s growing south east region. Holiday Inn Dandenong will be located just a few metres from the centre of the RCD initiative and will be a vibrant and welcomed addition to the precinct.

IHG’s Director of Development for Australasia & Pacific, Jael Fischer, said “The Holiday Inn brand has undergone a huge, global transformation over the last 18 months, unveiling a level of next-generation design which is making leisure and business travellers take note, fast tracking the brands growth across the region.

“This will be our fifth hotel with the Pelligra Group and we are honoured to be working with the team again to bring this completely refurbished Holiday Inn to the Dandenong community and build on our network in Victoria.”

Ross Pelligra from Pelligra Group, said “There is no question we are passionate about the Holiday Inn brand and we are thrilled to once again be branding our newest acquisition under IHG’s fastest growing hotel banner. We love working with the IHG team and we are excited to be building on our partnership with them.

“The location of this hotel is what really drew us to the property; just across the road from the town’s main shopping centre and metres from Dandenong’s major revitalisation project. Having the internationally recognised Holiday Inn brand attached to our hotel will be of great benefit as domestic and international travel returns and we are proud to be continuing our partnership with IHG.”

Holiday Inn Dandenong will join the 42 open or pipeline Holiday Inn brand family hotels in Australasia & Pacific. Globally, it’s the world’s largest brand family with more than 4,100 open and over 1,000 in the pipeline, delivering the Joy of Travel in almost every corner of the world.

London’s new five star hotel feels more like a Private Club – steps away from Buckingham Palace

hotel news

blank

blank

blank

blank

October 8, 2021 –The Guardsman brings understated decadence to Londontown.

Against all odds, London’s hospitality scene has emerged from the other side of several lockdowns and near-openings with a crop of buzzy new luxury hotels. From Covent Garden’s bold U.S. import NoMad to Marylebone’s Nobu, LXR’s new Biltmore Mayfair, and Leicester Square’s The Londoner. Quietly joining that line-up is The Guardsman, an intimate and sophisticated stay that feels more like a private member’s club than a central London hotel.

Like The Londoner, The Guardsman is one of several new openings from Preferred Hotels & Resorts, the world’s largest independent hotel brand. It reopened this summer after a brief soft launch in October 2020 before another London lockdown. Tucked away on a quiet street near St. James’ Park, the five-star property is so discreet that guests often don’t realize it’s there.

That member’s club feel is exactly what designer Richard Tomlin at London’s Tonik Associates was going for. Inside, the team turned the purpose-built property into an elegant and distinctly British hideaway, dotted with Herringbone parquet floors, vintage furniture, and Tom Dixon lighting throughout.

But outside The Guardsman’s guests will find yet another draw for the hotel: It’s next to the capital’s top landmarks — Buckingham Palace is just a six-minute stroll away. Tate Britain and the Houses of Parliament are within walking distance, too.

There are nods to The Guardsman’s royal and political neighbors throughout the property, from jewel-toned fabrics to regal paintings. Design fans can settle down for a nightcap in the Drawing Room on a replica of Jackie Kennedy’s deep-buttoned sofa from the White House, while history buffs can find carefully curated books like “Women of Westminster: The MPs who Changed Politics” ($34, amazon.com) in the hotel’s cozy library.

Even the six bespoke residences found on the top three floors of the property are named after famous female politicians. Most notably is the Astor penthouse suite, named after British American politician Lady Nancy Astor, the first woman to sit in parliament. The sprawling residence takes up the entire top floor and boasts a wraparound terrace with views of Buckingham Gate. It comes with three bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen (which can be stocked before arrival), a wine fridge, and a Japanese soaking bath to unwind in with toiletries from Noble Isle – a UK brand inspired by the natural riches of the British isles.

Pets also get the royal treatment. Staff are on hand with treats, dog beer, and an array of seasonal dishes for your pooch sourced from local markets and organic farms (think: poached cod with garden peas and crushed potatoes, or rib eye steak with doggie chips).

When it comes to food for humans, guests can wander down a gilded winding staircase to reach the hotel’s cozy dining room. Only those staying at The Guardsman (as well as their guests) can dine here. But there are no rules when it comes to dining times (which also means 24-hour room service) and the British-led menu changes often but always centers around farm-fresh, UK-sourced ingredients.

The bar isn’t to be sniffed at either, it serves up classic cocktails, new gems, and more than 250 whiskies. And to help guests rest easy, The Guardsman’s serious stance on sustainability means it’s using 100% renewable energy supplemented by the solar panels installed on the roof.

“The Shay is the first hotel in Culver City to celebrate the area’s growing creative community while fully embracing its rich history,” says Ryan Parker, general manager of The Shay. “As an anchor to the Arts District, which encompasses art galleries, coffee bars, trending fitness studios and the re-imagined landmark Helms Bakery building with design boutiques and specialty restaurants, The Shay offers guests a distinct sense of place that honors old and new.”

Adjacent to the Culver City Metro E Line, The Shay offers convenient access to experience all Los Angeles has to offer, from the boardroom to the beach and everything in between. After a productive day exploring the neighborhood or connecting with colleagues, guests find respite in 148 contemporary rooms and suites designed for comfort. All accommodations feature oversized windows, workstations, curated artwork and modern décor that mirror the city’s resourceful spirit. Select suites offer luxuries like wet bars, patios, large soaking tubs, generous living spaces and separate work areas.

Those adding local flair to the hotel’s experience include boutique design agency Studio Collective, whose award-winning portfolio includes downtown LA’s Hotel Figueroa, which is part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand; Culver City-based functional fitness studio Essers; LA-born craft grooming product company Imperial Barber; specialty spa brand milk + honey; and Culver City Art District’s ROSIES Foundation, a non-profit organization that sources employment for those with disabilities.

Distinctive Food & Beverage Offerings

The Shay plays host to two onsite culinary concepts by Michelin-starred chef Danny Grant’s What If Syndicate group, including etta, a wood-fired eatery with indoor-outdoor seating on the ground floor, and Celestina, a high-energy Mexican-inspired restaurant and cocktail bar on the roof deck. What If Syndicate also produces the culinary experiences for meetings, weddings and events.

The Shay boasts Culver City’s first curated rooftop pool experience, offering pop-up events including music shows, comedy sets and yoga classes; a versatile outdoor courtyard that leads into a modern ballroom; and an inviting lobby space featuring a cocktail bar and game room outfitted with eclectic seating and contemporary local art.

Expansive Meetings & Events Spaces

The arrival of companies like Amazon Studios, Apple TV and WarnerMedia to Ivy Station are energizing Culver City more than a century after Thomas Ince built the city’s first film studio where Sony Pictures stands today. The Shay is a co-catalyst for the historic neighborhood’s re-emergence as a destination for creative collaboration with 8,000 square feet of versatile indoor-outdoor event space that takes advantage of Southern California’s year-round idyllic weather. Meeting options include a modern boardroom that opens out into a courtyard with a gazebo and fireplace; a contemporary ballroom that connects to multiple pre-function spaces; and sleek breakout rooms.

Each meeting space nods to the destination with Culver City-inspired names like the Ivy Ballroom, Helms and Hayden Meeting Rooms and Blackwelder Boardroom. “We took a charismatic approach to meeting spaces that brings the spirit of Culver City to the experience,” says Parker. “There’s nothing boring about our boardroom!”

Special Offers

In celebration of its opening, The Shay is offering 50% off all suites and 15% off all standard room rates through the end of the year, and a Bed & Breakfast promotion that includes a full American breakfast for two and late 2:00 pm checkout. Small Luxury Hotels of the World launches Considerate Collection

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) has launched Considerate Collection.

A release described the new venture as a “community of actively sustainable luxury hotels going the extra eco-mile, proving that luxury is compatible with longevity”.

From the biodiversity-promoting Keemala in Thailand to the culture-preserving Gangtey Lodge in carbon-negative Bhutan, Considerate Collection debuts with 26 pioneering hotels in 16 countries.

SLH has collaborated with the most respectable sustainable travel and luxury hospitality players to create a trusted and transparent framework.

These include Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) – the international, independent, not-for-profit body established by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO); and Greenview, whose platform is the only GSTC-recognised sustainable tourism management tool.

“Staying in small, independent hotels goes hand in hand with travelling sustainably and all SLH hotels are already steeped in the many facets of sustainable hospitality, so we haven’t had to look far outside of our portfolio for the launch collection.

“We also have an exciting pipeline of new hotels to add in the coming months.”

He added: “This is not about creating a new brand, but rather building on the strong brand values that have existed within SLH since inception – independent spirits, community-centric, questioners, storytellers and the ultimate belief that Small is beautiful and a better way to travel.”

Currently, with a luxury hotel portfolio of over 520 hotels in 90 countries, SLH has taken a holistic approach to sustainability to complement its long-term brand vision – a future where people explore the world with intention, experience its intensity, and protect its integrity.

Randy Durband, chief executive of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, said: “SLH has impressed us with their dedicated support of their member hotels, and we are delighted to collaborate with them to devise a robust framework, consistent with GSTC measures but uniquely matched for all luxury boutique hotels.

“We are sure it will be a huge success.”

Prime cuts of imported steaks, a melt-in-your-mouth beef or salmon tartare, and a seafood tower are also part of the menu. Comfort foods, Asian cuisine and vegetarian dishes are also on offer.

The menu at Le Phnom 1929 will be restricted to room service-only for ASQ guests, but the restaurant will be available to non-ASQ visitors who are to be hosted separately in the hotel’s Heritage Wing. Visitors arriving from abroad are offered a range of contactless in-room options at Raffles. The ASQ itinerary includes “virtual” classes for children, birthday parties, masterclasses such as cocktail-making, and family cinema evenings.

Raffles Hotel Le Royal’s Elephant Bar
Each room at Le Royal has a balcony overlooking tropical gardens and swimming pools. Visitors staying at the hotel as part of the ASQ program will be provided private airport transfers, a full-board dining experience, 24-hour medical services and PCR tests.

Good to know: The hotel underwent a one-year renovation in 2019; returning guests will notice brighter interiors, Segafredo coffee machines, USB charging stations, and Simmons pillow-top mattresses, among the new features. All bathrooms have been renovated with Italian tiling and rain showers, though some retain their claw-foot bathtubs. Bathroom amenities are now supplied by Sodashi, an Australian brand of high-performance skincare products.

The courtyard remains the centerpiece of the property, its two swimming pools surrounded by tropical gardens of frangipani, and shaded by giant century-old trees.

LXR Hotels & Resorts Debuts in Kyoto, Japan

October  1, 2021 – LXR Hotels & Resorts, one of Hilton’s three luxury brands, has debuted in Asia Pacific with the opening of Roku Kyoto. The hotel also represents Hilton’s inaugural property in Kyoto, Japan.

Located at the foot of the Takagamine mountains in northern Kyoto, Roku Kyoto is set within the 28-acre Shozan Resort Kyoto, which is home to Japanese gardens, historic architecture and teahouses. The hotel is within walking distance from Kinkaku-ji, “Golden Pavilion,” and other historic temples, including the Genkoan Temple and the Koetsuji Temple.

The grounds on which the hotel was built was an artisan colony where the classical Rinpa school of Japanese painting was founded around 400 years ago by Hon’ami Koetsu, a Japanese artist, calligrapher, poet, landscape designer and tea master, considered one of the most influential artists of the 17th century. Rinpa played a significant role in nurturing artists and craftsmen over the years. He had a strong influence on the development of traditional Japanese art and culture.

Paying homage to the Takagamine area’s history, which was also the source of water for washi papermaking, the hotel has been designed by the BLINK Design Group. The facets of traditional Japanese art are on display throughout the property—from exquisite lacquerware at the entrance, bamboo art pieces in the restaurant, ceramics artifacts in the spa, to karakami decorative paper in the guestrooms.

The Peak Suite at Roku Kyoto (ROKU KYOTO LXR Hotels & Resorts)
Infusing traditional Kyoto design and modern Japanese aesthetic in earthy tones, the 114 guestrooms offer views of natural landscapes. The expansive Roku Suite offers views of the mountains along the Tenjin River, while the Takagamine mountains can be observed from the Peak Suite. While each of the Garden Deluxe rooms have a private onsen with a garden, the Poolside Deluxe rooms are located near the spa and provide direct access to the outdoor onsen thermal pool via a private terrace.

The Roku Spa offers a selection of therapies and treatments, including an original blend of aromatherapy oils infused with the essence of “Kitayama sugi,” a Japanese cedar tree native to the northern Kyoto area. Guests can relax in the hotel’s year-round natural onsen pool, work out in the 24-hour fitness center, or practice yoga or meditation on the lawn.

The French Restaurant Tenjin is named after the Tenjin river. Guests can tuck into dishes made from locally sourced seasonal ingredients. At the Chef’s Table within the restaurant, guests can witness the chefs at work as they present a seasonal course menu served with a special technique, inspired by the history and culture of the Rinpa school. At the bar, guests can sip on signature cocktails made with local ingredients or enjoy afternoon tea. Alternatively, guests can lounge at the “Engawa”, where they can listen to the sounds of the river by the indoor patio while enjoying the views.

The concierge team at the hotel will enable guests to experience the hidden treasures of Kyoto through various activities and services. Guests can opt for the Omuro 88 Temple Pilgrimage guided by a priest, create traditional ceramic art, learn “kintsugi”—the art of restoring pottery with gold, or try papermaking by hand with water sourced from the Tenjin River, as it had been done in the ninth century.
