Six Senses will add Kanuhura on the private island hideaway of Lhaviyani Atoll as its a second branded property in the Maldives, starting in late 2022. The laid-back retreat consists of three private islands—Kanuhura itself, plus two deserted neighbouring isles. When it adopts the Six Senses brand, the resort will offer 80 private overwater, beach and spacious family villas offering sunset or sunrise views.

This is the second collaboration of Six Senses with Singapore-based Hotel Properties Limited (HPL), which owns 41 hotels and resorts in 15 countries with eight in the Maldives. Kanuhura will become a northerly sister to the Six Senses Laamu. “Six Senses Kanuhura is a unique opportunity to combine our three best-loved ideals in life: sustainability, wellness and locally themed experiences,” says Neil Jacobs, chief executive officer, Six Senses.

Planned Updates

Located in an extremely remote area of the Maldives, Kanuhura is a 40-minute seaplane flight from the main international airport on Malé.

Resort enhancements planned over the coming months comprise an upgrade of the overwater villas to include private pools, as well as new family suites, new dining concepts and a pioneering wellness offering—all with a sustainability focus.

Below the water, the Lhaviyani Atoll offers more than 40 dive sites. In the coming months, new water sport activities and high-performance equipment will be added. A turtle safari also can be arranged upon request to a point less than five minutes away from the resort.

On the sustainability front, Six Senses will offer support to a neighbouring island community with a focus on education and student development. With new organic herb garden landscaping, fresh vegetables and herbs will be collected daily for use in the resort’s restaurants and interactive chef’s workshops. The boutique will have a new space dedicated to sustainable fashion.

Budapest’s Newest Luxury Hotel Is Built Inside a Restored UNESCO Landmark

Travel news from around the world

Budapest:

The late 19th century was a particularly heady era for Budapest. Elegant architecture was flourishing, and Princess Marie Clotilde of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who resided in Hungary with her husband Archduke Joseph Karl of Austria, wanted to partake in the Belle Époque’s renaissance. With all the fanfare over the forthcoming Elisabeth Bridge linking the Buda and Pest sides of the Danube River, the princess decided to commission a duo of grand, symmetrical buildings poised at the bridge’s Pest-side entrance. And now, after years of neglect, one of those UNESCO-protected structures was just transformed into Matild Palace, the city’s first Luxury Collection hotel. (Klotild Palace, its sibling, will also become part of the Marriott family when it finds new life as a St. Regis in a few years.)

Budapest is strewn with five-star properties like the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, the Aria Hotel Budapest and, most recently, the Párisi Udvar Hotel, which debuted as part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection in 2019. But Matild Palace’s calling card is a deft balance of past and present.

“Matild Palace reimagines its legacy while effortlessly capturing the many facets that make the city so spectacular—the diverse and vibrant culinary offerings, incredible cultural significance and breath-taking architecture and design,” Philipp Weghmann, vice president and global brand leader for the Luxury Collection, tells Robb Report. “The building holds the key to the city’s glamorous past, with history found at every turn, and we look forward to welcoming travelers to discover its magic and allure once again.”

Completed in 1902 by the architects Kálmán Giergl and Flóris Korb (who also worked on the New York Palace and the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, both of them Budapest landmarks), the neo-baroque Matild Palace was, by all accounts, stunning. It featured Zsolnay ceramics—even to encase the heaters—and vivid stained glass works by the renowned Hungarian artist Miksa Róth, and was awash in intricate ironwork and moldings. Many of those striking details have now been thoughtfully restored by artisans, under the supervision of London firm MKV Design; you can spy the stained glass on the hotel’s mezzanine level, for example, along with a selection of Zsolnay pieces.

In the 130 guest rooms and suites—which were converted from the apartments where members of the monarchy and upper classes once dwelled—there are jolts of peacock blue and stunning embroidered headboards that reference The Adventures of Sindbad, a Hungarian classic published in 1911 by Gyula Krúdy, one of the writers who frequented the Belvárosi Coffee House literary hangout once housed in the palace.

Most rooms flaunt bathrooms that are brightened by blue and gold tiles—a nod to Budapest’s famous mosaic-covered Gellért Baths—but some are simply swathed in marble, calling to mind hammams. (Guests who want to properly partake of the Turkish hammam ritual can head down to the petite Swan Spa.) Top room options include the Crown Tower Suite, which is carved into the building’s 157-foot-high tower and features a dizzying spiral staircase, and the Maria Klotild Royal Suite, with super-sized living room and panoramic city and river views.

But while Matild Palace celebrates its historic roots, it still manages to feel modern. A selection of slope-roofed Loft category rooms and suites on the fifth floor—a nod to the studio spaces of the artists the princess once patronized—forgo touches like the signature headboards in favor of contemporary artwork and furnishings. And the lobby’s towering vintage photo collage lives alongside a large-scale sculptural chandelier reminiscent of a gleaming snowflake.

Plus, there is the first Central European outpost of Wolfgang Puck’s Spago (the closest other location is in Istanbul). Staying true to the famous brand’s roots, the always-packed restaurant’s sprawling terrace has a distinctly LA vibe, with greenery and coral lounge chairs setting the scene for cocktails and late lunches of spicy lamb sausage pizza. Later this summer, it will be joined by the Duchess, a cocktail bar with a moody jungle aesthetic that will open on the roof.

Even more fitting will be the autumn arrival of Matild Café and Cabaret, which was inspired by the old coffee house stage that was unearthed during the renovation. Intimate musical performances will unfold regularly here—but it will likely be the homemade cakes, served amid glorious period chandeliers, that will plunge guests right back into bygone bohemian days.

Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel opens in Budapest

airline news

Travel news from around the world
More travel news

Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel has opened in Budapest with restaurants and bars to follow this autumn, the culmination of a five-year project to convert a neglected UNESCO World Heritage Site into one of Europe’s grandest hotels. The transformation was led by Maria Vafiadis, Founder & Managing Director of MKV Design, in collaboration with local architects, Péter Cajka and Puhl Antal.

The significance of the building to Budapest cannot be understated. When the decision was taken to construct the original Elisabeth Bridge over the River Danube in the 1880s, Princess Klotilde of Saxe-Coburg and Archduchess of Austria purchased adjacent land to create a gateway to the new bridge and a landmark for the city. Her vision was to build two grand palaces and in 1902, one of these, Matild Palace, was completed as a retail and apartment property resplendent in Zsolnay ceramics, Gyula Jungfer wrought iron and Miksa Róth stained glass. Later, the Belvarosi Café was added which became a famous haunt for artists and musicians during Budapest’s “Silver Age” between the wars.

Now, MKV has woven together a narrative rich in sense of place, which embraces the architectural, crafts, social and cultural inheritance of Budapest while creating a hotel that is relevant, beautiful and comfortable for 21st Century travellers. It is a narrative in which the Duchess features, returning to Budapest to revive the palace by transforming it into a luxury hotel where friends are invited to stay, dine and bathe, artists gather and she herself decides to make her residence.

At street level, the existing interior has been restored. Typifying buildings of its era, a passageway with full-height ornamental gates and a high vaulted ceiling is carved through the building, offering access to the café on one side and reception, lounge and dining areas on the other. Over-scaled pendants made of individual porcelain pieces showcase the next chapter of the local Zsolnay tile tradition and crafted items of furniture and elegant plantings hint at what is to come.

The Belvarosi Café has been reinvented as Matild Café and Cabaret, a contemporary destination with all the glamour of its predecessor. This is a coffeehouse and social hub to be seen in, which tourists to the city will bookmark as a ‘must-visit’. A long-buried stage in the central atrium was excavated and renovated and will once again play host to musicians and cabaret; the mezzanine gallery which flows around this, will be the perfect place for people-gazing. The timber-clad walls, architectural features on the ceiling and café chandeliers have all been retained and restored to their former beauty while table lamps have been introduced to provide a sense of cosy intimacy on chilly winter days.

On the opposite side of the passageway, the ground floor has been re-planned to accommodate Spago Budapest by Wolfgang Puck, a contemporary dining experience. Both the restaurant and the café spill onto new outdoor dining terraces, marking the first ‘gastro street’ in Budapest.

From the days of the Roman Empire, Budapest’s reputation for thermal bathing was second to none, and numerous bathhouses remain in the city today. Naturally, Matild Palace was destined to have its own spa inspired by the bathing culture and re-interpreted into an exquisite sanctuary where the graceful forms of the swans which inhabit the River Danube infuse the design. Doors resemble their soft white plumes of feathers and an ornate metalwork screen depicts their dance; the ethereal relaxation room hints of traditional bathhouses or a deep-water pool into which swans may dive.

The bathrooms also take guests to a new level of luxury with their bespoke bathtubs and rain showers. Designed as a private spa, their wet areas are clad in turquoise glass mosaic interleaved with gold – a nod to Budapest’s famous Gellért Baths. Richly veined Calacatta Oro marble to the walls, floors and vanities and bronze fittings complete the jewel-like character of their interiors.

The Duchess loved to gather artists around her and the fifth floor is designed to be their very special pad. Tucked into the eaves and with inspirational views of the city through floor-to-ceiling windows, these rooms are skilfully curated to evoke a sense of creative fun, from the casual platform sofas to lounge on to the eclectic, original Hungarian art on the walls and vintage-style rugs.

The Maria Klotilde Royal Suite has been imagined as the princess’s private apartment, designed to reflect her personality and social standing. The open plan living room is perfect for entertaining guests amidst her artefacts, original artworks and furniture pieces – a collection that feels as if it has been brought together over the years. The colour palette belongs to Budapest with tones of teal, green, gold and copper. Modern and traditional furniture spans the opulent chamber along with chandeliers, handmade glass pieces, antiques sourced in Budapest and a magnificent parquet floor. Everything is custom designed and the original artwork is by acclaimed Hungarian artists. The bathroom is simply one-of-a-kind. Book matched Calacatta Oro marble clads the space from top to toe, combined with a specially commissioned gold mosaic design to the walls, a huge free-standing tub and classic bronze fittings.

The Duchess has one more secret – an eponymously named rooftop bar, a place so precious it might be reserved for her most favoured friends, and because it is a “secret”, the design here can be at its most precocious. The ambience is that of a private club where fantastic things can happen. A glowing onyx bar displays its liquor “library”, tables are held aloft by brass peacocks and even a couple of giraffe sculptures join the host of extraordinary objects. The ambience is dark and moody with plush fabrics and marble finishes glinting under ceiling pendants. A large terrace where guests can sit within the Baroque skyline completes the magic.

“Reimagining Matild Palace as one of the finest hotels in central Europe was an extraordinary experience,” says Maria Vafiadis, Founder & Managing Director of MKV Design. “We were fortunate in a client who was passionate about the project, a hotel brand that was a strong partner for our aspirations, the property’s location in a city which loves its palaces, and historical context. While clearly a new hotel, Matild Palace feels as if she’s been there forever.”

September 17, 2021- Owned by the Hunan Yunda Industry Group, W Changsha is the first W in central China and is strategically located in the heart of the city’s business and shopping district. The hotel reflects the bright spirit of the futuristic and multi-dimensional city with a provocative and playful design inspired by space travel.

“W Changsha marks the eighth W hotel to open in China, one of the most influential markets in both travel and business, and we’re excited to bring W Hotels to more destinations across the country,” said Tom Jarrold, Global Brand Leader, W Hotels Worldwide. “Cities such as Changsha, with their future-focused residents and fast-growing millennial luxury market who crave the new and unexpected, are playgrounds of limitless possibilities for W.”

Easily accessible, W Changsha is within a 30-minute drive to the Changsha Huanghua International Airport, 15-minute drive to the Changsha South Railway Station and connects directly to the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway. Designed by the acclaimed Cheng Chung Design (H.K.) Ltd, W Changsha takes imaginative risks with daring new design forms celebrating Changsha’s rich heritage and modernity. In China, Changsha is also known as “Star City” and its name inspires the hotel’s design narrative featuring bold geometric patterns mixed with contemporary avant-garde artwork. Exclusively commissioned by the hotel, whimsical artwork such as the Schrodinger’s Cat series and the Zeta art installations explore the mystery of the universe through the W lens, creating unexpected encounters throughout the hotel.

Upon arrival at W Changsha, guests are greeted by the iconic W logo, illuminated to resemble the surface of the moon. “Avenue of the Stars,” a mixed-media landscape combining digital, interactive, and sound art, transports guests to RUNWAY, a destination bar in the Living Room, the brand’s signature, socially driven spin on the traditional hotel lobby. Here, the “Pepper Man” sculpture invites guests to look up and marvel anew at the wonders of space within the context of Changsha’s local custom and culture.

The hotel’s 345 guest rooms and suites offers modern luxuries and new-tech conveniences, with walls depicting planets, constellations, and discovery of the nebulae through a “meow eye cabin” LED screen emulating space exploration. From 26th floor to the highest floor on 28th, the triple-story Extreme – WOW Suite (the brand’s take on the presidential suite) incorporates more than 1,000 square meters of living and leisure space, including a private garden and a swimming pool, to make for a brilliant venue for private events amplified by the hotel’s signature service.

W Changsha promise to be the newest dining destination for local foodies with three restaurants and a destination bar. TROPICS, the hotel’s all-day restaurant, delivers an immersive experience with its open-concept kitchen offering local and international cuisine. SHINN YEN celebrates Changsha’s culture through dining and art, with a lively approach to local Hunanese cuisine showcasing the region’s spicy flavors. Every evening, a mesmerizing live cabaret show remixed with Hunan traditional opera further animates the dining experience. At night, RUNWAY is the hotel’s destination bar where all guests take center stage to see and be seen. The bar lights up with electrified musical performances that pair perfectly with handcrafted cocktails and light bites.

With more than 1,000 square meters of function space across five flexible rooms, W Changsha offers limitless possibilities for hosting both work and social gatherings. In the foyer, a graffiti and pop art “Fist Bump” sculpture—the international expression of a friendly greeting—awaits guests as they meet before a spirited occasion. Every meeting room is multifunctional and equipped with the latest audiovisual technology adapted to specific event requirements. In between meetings, guests can take a break with W Recess, the hotel’s original take on a coffee break with a diverse beverage and food selection designed to elevate any event.

After work or play, guests can kick-back by the reflection pool or make a splash at WET®, an expansive pool with a three-meter ‘Space Cat’ sculpture. The 24/7, fully-equipped FIT fitness center offers weights and cardio as well as heart-pumping dance classes to burn calories before the celebration begins again. For guests who live by the brand’s ‘Detox.Retox.Repeat’ philosophy, AWAY SPA awaits to restore and revive their glow.

“We are thrilled to debut the W Hotels brand in central China and mark another symbolic step for us as we continue to expand our luxury portfolio into new markets across the country,” said Henry Lee, President, Greater China, Marriott International. “As domestic travel continues to pick up tremendous momentum, we are bringing new and exciting brands such as W to the country’s emerging leisure destinations.”

Research Reveals XL Holidays are Set to Boom by Hilton

airline news

Travel news from around the world
More travel news

September 14, 2021 New research conducted by Hilton (NYSE: HLT) shows that extra-large holidays are set to boom as Britons invite friends and family away with them.

Almost three-quarters (72 percent) of UK adults say the events of the past 18 months have made them re-evaluate what is really important. Two-thirds of parents (65 percent) said their children have missed out on seeing grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins during 2020 and 2021, with 63 percent being keen to make up for this lost time in the future.

As a result of the extended time apart, the UK populace is set to embark on an era of multi-generational holidays, with more than half (51 percent) likely to go away next year with extended family members such as siblings, cousins and grandparents.

Of the respondents who had family abroad, almost all (96 percent) said it had been two years since they had seen loved ones living away, with 43 percent confirming their group holiday would involve visits to family overseas. Nearly three-quarters (70 percent) of those polled said going on an extended family holiday allowed them to reconnect with family members while enjoying a break, and more than half (52 percent) said inviting more people along made childcare easier.

Steve Cassidy, Hilton’s managing director, UK & Ireland, said: “Many of us have missed out on the opportunity to travel as well as spend quality time with loved ones, so for most, it makes perfect sense to combine the two and create some fantastic memories on holiday. Whether it’s building sandcastles with the grandchildren, cousins playing at a theme park, or mums and dads relaxing together, there is no shortage of options with a multi-generational getaway.  Our research shows just how much the public wants to make up for the lost time by adventuring with as many of their loved ones as possible.”

Hilton is the only major hotel chain that allows guests to confirm interconnecting rooms at the time of booking, providing a hassle-free solution to a decades-old problem for families and groups.

The most popular reason to have an XL holiday is to catch up with family members, followed by a special celebration and the chance to see relatives you don’t often spend time with. A quarter of adults said holidays provide an opportunity for grandparents to spend quality time with their grandchildren, while a fifth (22 percent) said it allows kids to play together while grown-ups relax. Four in 10 (42 percent) say holidays with lots of kids are more fun and a quarter (23 percent) said they liked group trips away because it works out cheaper for accommodation costs. Almost half (45 percent) said they were willing to spend more on their next holiday to make up for having been unable to go abroad in 2020 and 2021.

The UK is the most likely destination for an XL holiday (41 percent), followed by Spain (31 percent), France (23 percent) and Italy (21 percent). Almost a fifth (18 percent) of families fancy a trip across the Atlantic for a getaway in Florida and 52 percent say that if they are holidaying with family members like young children, they are more likely to do things they wouldn’t do otherwise such as visit a theme park, ride a jet ski and plan something more adventurous.

Almost all (89 percent) of the respondents in the UAE said they were likely to take a multi-generational holiday next year, followed by those in Saudi Arabia (86 percent), Turkey (63 percent) and Russia (60 percent), confirming the global post-pandemic trend to travel with the entire family.

Here are six of the best Hilton properties to head to on a multi-generational trip in 2022.

Hilton offers new family experience packages at nearly 200 of its hotels across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.  Curated by parents from the global hospitality brand, children under 12 can enjoy complimentary touches including beds decorated with a special children’s theme, storybooks, kids’ passports, mocktails, bespoke menus and dedicated breakfast corners.

The new signings will add a total of 992 rooms and apartments, doubling the Group’s portfolio in Makkah, a key target growth market in Saudi Arabia. Despite the challenges due to the pandemic, Radisson Hotel Group is continuing its strong expansion as one of the fastest growing companies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Elie Younes, Executive Vice President & Chief Development Officer EMEA, Radisson Hotel Group, says: “We are delighted to announce this portfolio of three new hotels, as it not only accelerates our growing presence in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, but also reaffirms our commitment towards the country and its future. The Thakher Makkah megaproject is designed to attract millions of pilgrims every year and will positively contribute to the country’s ambitious plan that aims to host 30 million Umrah visitors, as well as, hosting 6 million Hajj pilgrims by the year 2030. We remain committed to the country’s Vision 2030 and their initiatives to significantly increase the contribution of leisure and business tourism to the country’s economy. We would like to thank our business partners for their trust in our brands and teams as we look forward to an exciting and rewarding journey.”

The city of Makkah, situated 70 km southeast of Jeddah, is known as the holiest city in Islam. The main sources of economic activity in Makkah are the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage, with millions flocking to Makkah each year for worship and devotion. Since the seventh century, Muslims all over the world have visited Mecca, the birthplace of Islam. It is a pilgrimage that marks their observance of one of the Five Pillars of Islam and the fulfillment of a once-in-a-lifetime ritual. Holy sites in the city include the sacred Ka’aba, located in the heart of the Masjid al-Haram, the Grand Mosque, or the historic Cave of Thawr.

Located within the Thakher Makkah megaproject, a mixed-use development comprising of hotels, residential and retail units, the hotels are just a stone’s throw away from the holy sites and offer a unique choice for travelers. Due to open in Q4 2022, the hotels will be another great addition to the existing portfolio across the Kingdom.

Eng. Abdulaziz Al-Aboudi, CEO of Thakher Development Co., stressed that: “The keenness of international hotel companies to provide their services to the Thakher Makkah Project reflects the importance and value of the project as a prominent tourism destination in the Holy City. Such cooperation gives an indication that we are on the right path to providing new distinctive hospitality and housing options, which is in line with Vision 2030. We are excited to announce today the launch of further cooperation with Radisson Hotel Group, which we anticipate will be a fruitful endeavor.”

A combination of both hotel and residential options, the Radisson Hotel Makkah Thakher City will consist of 440 rooms and 206 branded residences, a lobby café, and all-day dining restaurant. For leisure and recreation, the hotel will feature separate ladies and male gym facilities, while the meeting and event spaces will include five meeting rooms as well as three conference rooms.

Known for its modern facilities and contemporary design, Park Inn by Radisson Makkah Thakher City Tower West and Park Inn by Radisson Makkah Thakher City Tower East will be great additions to the existing Park Inn portfolio in the region and are designed to facilitate the pilgrim travelers’ stay and experience in the Kingdom. With a clever use of color, contemporary design, and friendly, personalized service, guests can relax while fully embracing their pilgrimage.

Boasting 203 rooms, the Park Inn by Radisson Makkah Thakher City Tower West offers its guest a lobby cafe and all-day dining restaurant. The upcoming Park Inn by Radisson Makkah Thakher City Tower East houses 143 rooms, a lobby lounge, and one restaurant.

The Top 15 European Resort Hotels of 2021

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

This year’s World’s Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year’s honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

The shores of the Continent always beckon. Still, travelers are as discerning as ever when it comes to determining the best resorts in Europe. As usual, Greece and Italy make a strong showing, but a smattering of properties in the U.K., Switzerland, Spain, and Portugal round out the far-reaching list, proving that the countryside is just as adored as the waterfront.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities.

After zero presence on last year’s list, the U.K. captured two spots this year: Chewton Glen in the English countryside at No. 14 and Ireland’s famed Ballyfin at No. 12, which was described by one respondent as having “elegance and luxury, with the feel of a country home.” Portugal managed to nab one spot again, but with a different property this year. Lauded as a “beautiful hotel near Sintra with a great golf course,” Penha Longa Resort secured the eighth spot on the list.

Hotels in Italy made a strong showing. Scoring highest was Il Sereno Lago di Como in Torno, Italy, which claimed spot No. 2. According to one voter, the modern property is “a breath of fresh air in old Lake Como.” Another admirer wrote, “The rooms are beautifully crafted, and each element has been carefully thought through to pamper the guest.”

But rivalling Italy for clout on this year’s list is Greece, which has four hotels on the list, including the Santorini oasis that secured No. 1. Keep reading to find out what made it such a standout, and see the rest of the winners.

Moving up from the last spot on last year’s list, this cliff-top retreat on the quieter side of Santorini captured readers’ hearts in a big way. The stunning white-washed resort offers sweeping views of both the Aegean Sea and the surrounding blue and white buildings. (Elegant rooms echo the color scheme, which gives a seamless look and feel to the resort.) The minimalism continues throughout the modern restaurant, fitness center, and outdoor spaces, with only the massive infinity pool diverting attention from the sea. Guests obsessed over the “best sunset views on the whole island,” and one reviewer wrote simply that “the resort is magical and the food is divine.”

Taking stock of Marriott’s all-inclusive strategy

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Mexico:

All-inclusive resorts have been the bread and butter of Mexico’s travel industry for quite some time. So when Marriott International unveiled a plan to expand into the sector in 2019, many believed that it was a venture that was a long-time coming.

With the recent opening of the Delta Hotels by Marriott, Riviera Nayarit, I checked in with the brand and experts to see what else we can expect to see from Marriott’s all-inclusive division in Mexico and beyond.

“Our new all-inclusive resort platform is a natural progression for Marriott International,” said Alex Fiz, managing director, all-inclusive, Marriott International Caribbean & Latin America. “We announced the signing of the first Delta by Marriott all-inclusive resort in 2019 and opened the hotel at the beginning of August, as planned. We continue to see strong opportunities for quality brand experiences in the Caribbean and Latin America, and especially conversion opportunities, which are a strong proposition for savvy investors.”

The original all-inclusive plan

As part of the initial announcement, Marriott said that it would increase its all-inclusive footprint under its brands, including Ritz-Carlton, Luxury Collection, Marriott, Westin, W, Autograph Collection and Delta. In Mexico, the projected openings include the new Delta Hotels by Marriott as well as four resorts that will be part of a 220-acre development on the Riviera Nayarit. These include a 240-room Ritz-Carlton, a 400-room Westin, a 300-room Autograph Collection resort and a 500-room Marriott.

The Delta Hotels by Marriott, Riviera Nayarit that just opened is a conversion property that was once the Grand Matlali Hills Resort in the hills near La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. It has 117 guestrooms, all with private balconies, as well as two restaurants and four pop-up venues, two swimming pools, a fitness center, a spa and a beach club with shuttle service.

“Despite the current business climate, we have been able to maintain planned hotel openings in the region and signed several new deals, such as the long-term agreement with Blue Diamond Resorts, Sunwing Travel Group’s hotel division,” Fiz said. “Through this agreement, the All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy collection now features boutique resort properties throughout the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico.”

Marriott added 19 resorts, totaling around 7,000 rooms across six destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico. Most of the properties are expected to be converted into Marriott’s Autograph Collection brand. The portfolio is projected to increase by more than 50 percent by 2025.

What’s next in the pipeline?

The four resorts that will be part of the 220-acre development are still on track to open by 2025. Additional signed pipeline countries include Brazil, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico.

“Marriott International plans to further expand its all-inclusive portfolio in popular leisure destinations worldwide with a mix of newbuild properties and conversions of existing resorts, including properties currently in the Marriott International portfolio,” Fiz said. “The new platform will provide the company’s roughly 150 million Marriott Bonvoy members the option to earn and redeem points for this pay-one-price concept. Marriott expects to expand its all-inclusive portfolio to over 30 properties by 2025.”

Jennifer Dohrmann-Alpert, senior hospitality advisor at HKS, said, “Marriott saw the opportunity for all-inclusive expansion early with their acquisition of the Elegant Hotels portfolio in 2019. They have been steadily increasing their portfolio of all-inclusive properties across Mexico and the Caribbean since then and are well positioned to serve their Bonvoy members across markets and hotel categories with their growing portfolio.”

Communicating with advisors

Advisors, however, would like to hear a little bit more from Marriott about their new all-inclusive endeavors. In a market like Mexico, where all-inclusives are a mainstay, the more information advisors have the better. The market may seem oversaturated, but heads continue to fill beds, so the demand is there.

“There hasn’t been a lot of communication from Marriott from the all-inclusive segment,” said Geoff Millar, co-owner of Ultimate All-Inclusive Travel. “I think they’re still putting together their plan. Marketing all-inclusive resorts is a whole different animal than what they’re used to.”

Millar told Travel Weekly that Marriott recently sent out a questionnaire asking advisors and experts to give them recommendations for how to set up their all-inclusive organization and run the all-inclusive resorts.

“I think they’re doing it slowly because marketing all-inclusive resorts is a different animal,” he said. “They’re still kind of feeling their way about how to set up an organization to do that.”

Communication with advisors will be crucial in the coming years. Dohrmann-Alpert predicts that the trend of brands securing all-inclusive market share will continue for the next two to three years, so advisors will need all the information from the different hotel companies in order to best match their clients to all-inclusive resorts.

“With Hyatt Hotels’ recent announcement that they are acquiring Apple Leisure Group and their 100 global all-inclusive properties, brands are moving quickly to secure market share in this growing space,” said Dohrmann-Alpert. “Brand loyalty customers have been asking for more all-inclusive options, and brands are now responding via acquisitions and the launch of new products.”

The Slate in Phuket Introduces New MICE Packages

Travel news from around the world

Thailand:

The Slate, a beachfront resort in PhuketThailand, is getting ready to host business meetings once again with a series of MICE packages. Following 18 months of travel restrictions, the resort in the secluded northwest coast foresees plenty of pent-up demand for in-person corporate functions.

To enable the safe restart of domestic and international events, The Slate has crafted a pair of packages that include plenty of added value for companies to maximize their MICE budget. As health and safety of associates remain a top priority for organizations, the new packages also aim to take every precaution to take care of the delegates.

The “Meet Again @ The Slate” package will allow businesses to benefit from reconfigured venues that strike a balance between personal connections and physical space, including the use of larger areas for smaller groups and one-way systems to ensure social distancing. All attendees will be subject to temperature checks, advanced sanitation procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE), and all facilities will undergo intensive deep cleaning.

Half-day and full-day meeting packages are available, including private roundtrip airport transfers, function room rentals, priority check-in, a dedicated hospitality desk, a 30-minute cocktail reception upon arrival, daily breakfast, coffee breaks, a conference lunch, late check-out, a one-hour outdoor team activity and a group photo, which will be framed and presented to each guest as a turndown gift. Guests will also be offered a choice of yoga and meditation breaks and will be able to plant herbs in the resort’s organic garden. Every attendee will get 20 percent discounts at the Coqoon Spa and the KRU Precision Wellness, the onsite healthcare facility.

Priced at $49 per person for a half-day meeting package and $55 for a full-day package, this offer is valid for bookings made until April 30, 2022 and events staged by October 31, 2022, for groups of 30 to 50 guests. One VIP will also be treated to a complimentary upgrade to a Private Pool Suite.

Alternatively, the “Healthy Meeting @ The Slate” package lets event planners create experiences inspired by the natural, transformative elements of Nai Yang Beach. This four-day package includes luxurious accommodations (starting from a Pearl Bed Suite), daily breakfast with fresh juice, smoothies and nutrient-packed dishes, two full-day meeting packages with morning and afternoon breaks, a specially prepared conference lunch with options for vegans and vegetarians, and a gala dinner. To enhance physical and mental well-being, The Slate will also provide 20-minute “stretchercise” and sunset rituals, along with mindfulness moments at KRU Precision Wellness, and the meeting room will even include fitness elements.

The health-giving package is priced at $515 USD (single) and $362 (double) and is valid until October 31, 2022 for groups of 20 to 50 people.

The Slate has a collection of modern meeting spaces that blend international amenities with authentic Thai charm, all surrounded by architect Bill Bensley’s original artworks. To showcase The Slate’s  interiors, the new “Art Journey” is  a QR code-enabled tour that transports guests through this living gallery and introduces its original sculptures and installations.

Meeting-planners can choose from a selection of venues, including the pillar-free 500-person Tongkah Hall, the bright and bold Jomon Pavilion with its vast windows, elevated ceilings and skylights, two intimate suites, and the Coliseum Garden, a space for al fresco receptions and cocktail evenings.

Lake Geneva gets new hotel

Travel news from around the world

Switzerland:

The Woodward is Geneva’s first all-suite hotel, and it sits on Lake Geneva with stunning vistas of Mont Blanc.

The bar on luxury living in Geneva has been raised, thanks to the Sept. 1 opening of The Woodward Geneva, a 26-room all-suite hotel located on Quai Wilson, right on the shores of Lake Geneva with views of Mont Blanc.

The post-Haussmann-style building has long stunned from the outside, with a facade dating back to 1901 designed by French architect François Durel. While it started as L’Hôtel Bellevue and then became a private bank, it has now been meticulously restored back into a hotel, with every detail thoughtfully designed, led by the Pierre-Yves Rochon — the architect behind some of the world’s finest hotels, like the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, The St. Regis Rome, The Savoy in London, and Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris.

“Guests of The Woodward will feel as though they have taken up residence in a spectacular lake house unlike any other, combining the familiar comforts of a grand, luxury hotel with the warm embrace of personal touches found throughout,” Timo Gruenert, CEO of Oetker Collection, tells Travel + Leisure.

The elegance of the Belle Époque hotel starts with the wrought-iron door featuring hand-decorated gold-leaf trimmings. This leads into a lobby surrounded with Macassar ebony wood walls and lustrous carpets. The lounge has Rochon’s own sofas atop Nepalese carpets, French gilded mirrors, a Baccarat crystal chandelier, a Hervé Van der Straeten bronze table, and Ralph Lauren armchairs. There are also pieces by Yann Jallu, made of gypsum, which is so fragile it would usually crumble when touched.

Each suite feels like a home of its own, with individual decor in every unit. “A favorite of mine is the Mont Blanc Suite, with its breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Geneva’s peaceful blue waters and the majestic mountain ridge in the distance,” Gruenert tells T+L. “The apartment-style suite boasts subtle shades of ivory and blue, coupled with beautiful design features such as marquetry doors, Lalique door handles, and a stunning Baccarat crystal chandelier. And I can’t forget the experience bar, which takes the traditional minibar and in-room entertaining to a whole new level.”

The food offerings are just as elevated, with outposts of two New York Michelin-starred restaurants, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon (featuring a 36-person counter around an open kitchen) and Le Jardinier (located on two lakeside verandas). Both kitchens will be led by chef Olivier Jean, who was the executive chef at Taipei’s Michelin-starred L’Atelier.

Additionally, there will be two bars and a tea room, plus a cigar lounge in the building’s former bank vault. “Genevans have high expectations and refined palates,” Jean said in a statement. “They travel, they like novelty, but they appreciate the familiar… I want this restaurant to be a must for any epicurean!”

Relaxation also comes in style, thanks to the 12,917-square-foot Club Woodward, a fitness and wellness facility with a Guerlain Spa and the city’s longest private indoor swimming pool at nearly 70 feet, plus a gym, two saunas, two steam rooms, two Swedish baths, a Jacuzzi, six wellness rooms, and a barber room.

The Woodward is the tenth Masterpiece Hotel to be added to the Oetker Collection, which includes legendary properties like the Eden Rock St. Barths and Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in France’s Cap d’Antibes. It also marks the first all-suite hotel in Geneva.

The iconic city resort, conveniently located next to Eros Airport and just 10 minutes from the city centre, features the 215-key Safari Court Hotel, the 199-key Safari Hotel, and the country’s most prominent conference centre, with 16 venues including a 1,600-square-metre ballroom catering to 2,400 delegates.

Kempinski to enter South America for first time

Brazil:

Kempinski is preparing to welcome its first ever resort with residences in South America.

Kempinski Laje de Pedra Hotel & Residences in Canela, Brazil was designed by Edgar Graeff, a disciple of Oscar Niemeyer, and originally opened in 1978.

Today, the hotel is known far beyond the borders of the Serra Gaúcha region, having played host to the signing of the Mercosur treaty in 1992.

Situated on a cliff in Canela with a breath-taking view over the Vale do Quilombo eco reserve, the developers, together with Kempinski Hotels, plan to open the most outstanding luxurious inland resort in Brazil.

By carrying the spirit of this well-known hotel icon into the present and after an extensive renovation and modernisation, it is foreseen that it will welcome the first guests by 2024.

“After being the absolute place to be in the first decades after its opening, the Laje de Pedra has fallen into a slumber, so to speak, in recent times,” said Bernold Schroeder, chief executive of Kempinski Hotels.

“The aim is to bring this historic and architectural icon back to life with our commitment to first-class quality combined with timeless European elegance and to position it as a top destination at the highest level.

“It is an excellent opportunity for us to tackle the South American market with such an exceptional project.”

A total of 360 elegant and state-of-the-art residential suites ranging in size from 54 to 290 square metres will be partially sold, with future owners able to use all of the services of the hotel or rent out their apartment temporarily when they are not on site themselves.
