South Africa FAM trips offered by SA tourism board

South Africa FAM trips

South Africa FAM trips

September 20, 2022-  South Africa FAM trips on the agenda with the SA tourism board

Encouraged by the uptake in the travel, tourism and hospitality industries after the disruptions of the past two years, SA Tourism is scaling up the implementation of its sector growth plans. The country’s destination-marketing agency believes the moment is opportune to follow up and complement its ‘Live Again’ global campaign, with a familiariSation strategy on a grand and bold scale. This strategy is dubbed MegaFam, South Africa FAM trips  – to emphasise its scale and ambition, which is bigger than a typical destination-marketing familiarisation (Fam) campaign.

South Africa FAM trips

By definition, familiarisation involves allowing tourism industry professionals, opinion-shapers and influencers to sample a destination’s offerings, allowing them to form informed opinions on whether or not to recommend it in their various spheres of influence.

SA Tourism has taken South Africa FAM trips, tweaked and turbo-charged it, to put it to good use in amplifying our country’s brand promise that we are the ultimate destination for those seeking to re-energise, refresh and rejuvenate mind, body and spirit in the post-pandemic world.

The main thrust of the #MegaFam phase of our ‘Live Again’ growth campaign will see us invite to our shores over the coming months, some 840 carefully-selected people from varied backgrounds across all continents, time-zones, linguistic and cultural regions, professions, and social standing.

What the invitees have in common is their status as opinion-makers, thought-leaders, and agenda-setters in niche tourism markets.

They include influential travel bloggers, writers and journalists for established media, international tour operators from various regions of the world, and conversation-framers who focus on the travel needs of specific tourism niche markets such as the LGBTQIA+ community, women, and romantic-travel seekers.

Bronwen Auret, Chief Quality Assurance of South Africa of SA Tourism said about the South Africa FAM trips

“The idea is for them to come and be immersed in, to touch, feel and experience South Africa for themselves. They in turn, will be touched by our Ubuntu-centric spirit of hospitality, such that when they go back to their home countries, they won’t be able to keep quiet about their experiences here, and will want to Tweet it out loud, Instagram it boldly, blog it boisterously and of course for those in the tourism booking business; ‘sell it’ (as that old TV advert used to say)”

Examples of the invitees include a London-based French and Greek couple Stefan and Sebastien who have dedicated the past 10 years to traveling to more than 80 countries around the world, and reviewing them for the global LGBTQIA+ community on their blog ‘Nomadic Boys’. They include US-based Danny Rivers Mitchell whose ‘Black Girls Travel Too’ agency and blog curates for black women, travel experiences around the world, typically lasting a week on average.

And they include the Rwandan travel photographer Winnie Rioba, who lets her lens tell the story of the incredible destinations she has visited on the African continent.

The launch of MegaFam comes against the backdrop of recent developments that vindicate the correctness of the bold moves we have made to stimulate the tourism sector over the past year, such as the launch of the ‘Live Again’ global campaign.

Stats SA’s numbers reveal that by June this year, South Africa had received about 2.28 million international visitors, well on track towards surpassing 2021’s full-year total of just over 2.3 million.

This phase of the campaign also tallies up with growing confidence being shown in South Africa as a destination, through such moves as Air Belgium launching direct flights twice a week between Brussels, Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The significance of this move, along with Qatar Airways’ cooperation agreement with Airlink, signed a few months ago cannot be overstated. They underscore the importance of airlift in the recovery of our tourism sector.

They also bode well for SA Tourism’s ambitious target of raising international tourist arrivals beyond the 10 million per annum averaged in the three years immediately prior to the pandemic, which Auret has likened our nation’s founding president Nelson Mandela’s long walk;

“Our long walk is not ended until we match and pole-vault over this sector’s benchmark contribution to our economy’s GDP, which was 3.9 percent in 2019, yielding at least 774 000 jobs and some R 122 billion in foreign currency earnings that year.

Our walk is not ended until we vindicate the World Travel and Tourism Council in its prediction that our country’s tourism sector will grow at an average of 7.6 percent per annum, over the next decade.”

See’s again implored South Africans to put shoulder to the wheel in achieving MegaFam’s objectives by welcoming and treating the invited and other visitors to our country with our signature Ubuntu, warmth and generosity of spirit.

Sports sector contributed $2.45bn to Dubai economy in 2021

September 20, 2022

The sports sector’s contribution to Dubai’s economy exceeded AED9 billion ($2.45 billion) in 2021, accounting for 2.3 percent of the emirate’s GDP for the year, said a senior official.

Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Sports Council (DSC), said the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, supported by a robust regulatory framework and an active lifestyle, has enabled the emirate to consolidate its position as the world’s preferred hub for sports in addition to being a destination for business, tourism, and education.

Chairing the third meeting of the DSC’s Board of Directors, he said the sector supports the creation of 105,000 job opportunities, accounting for 3.8 percent of the total employment in Dubai, said a Wam news agency report.

He credited Dubai’s pioneering regulatory framework and robust infrastructure for shaping the emirate’s sports sector. He noted that the government’s support for the industry is an integral priority within Dubai’s drive to become the world’s best city to live and work in.

“We are proud of the significant growth in the contribution of the sports sector to Dubai’s annual GDP. In addition to nurturing and fostering Emirati and expat athletes living in the UAE and ensuring the community’s health and happiness, the sports industry is now a significant economic contributor.

“At the DSC, we were keen to measure this growth in the contribution of sports to Dubai’s economy. In line with international best practices, we conducted a study in association with a major global consultancy. The study analysed and calculated the economic contribution of sports across different areas of the industry, including sports tourism, investment in sports training academies, sports events, and others,” Sheikh Mansoor said.

“The sports sector benefits from Dubai’s position as the world’s preferred destination for living, working, studying, and investing. The DSC supports the industry and the increase in its contribution to GDP by strengthening relations with international sports institutions and bodies. The council offers state-of-the-art facilities that support the work of local and international event organisers, which contributes to the growth of the sector.

“DSC encourages international sports stars and investors to take advantage of Dubai’s world-class facilities to open sports academies and host major world championships and training camps for various clubs, national teams and champion athletes, as well as to benefit from investment opportunities in its various fields. All these factors contributed to increasing the sector’s economic contribution and the number of employees in various related companies,” he added.

Dubai’s new sports strategy focuses on sports clubs in Dubai, infrastructure for sports facilities, e-sports, sports tourism, and sports technology, among others. It also identifies the main challenges, future development plans and strategy. The meeting also reviewed plans to develop football stadiums in Dubai and directed the concerned authorities to work on implementing them according to the approved schedule.

Air New Zealand touches down in the Big Apple

September 19, 2022 –

Air New Zealand touched down at John F. Kennedy International Airport yesterday, marking the first of its non-stop flights connecting the city of sails and the city that never sleeps.

Air New Zealand

Minister of Tourism for New Zealand Hon Stuart Nash, Chair Dame Therese Walsh and Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Greg Foran were onboard the inaugural flight, along with key tourism and travel partners. Foran says the introduction of a non-stop service between Auckland and New York connects his two favorite places.

“As one of the world’s greatest cities, Air New Zealand is proud to add the Big Apple to its list of 29 international destinations. By adding greater access to the East Coast of the US, we’re connecting our North American customers to the possibilities of 20 destinations within New Zealand as well as the Pacific and Australia, all within easy reach. This is terrific for our customers.”

The airline’s new international menu was debuted onboard NZ2, showcasing the best of New Zealand produce to the world. This features more choice in the air, so Premium customers can add the likes of seared salmon from Marlborough, free-range chicken from Waikato or bacon, and streamed green vegetables or fresh, crisp salads picked straight from orchards and fields in Gisborne, Waikato and the Manawatū.

As part of the new menu, Business Premier customers were welcomed to their dining experience with an amuse-bouche of New Zealand paua saucisson (abalone sausage) with herb cream and tomato.

Air New Zealand now serves seven destinations in North America – Chicago (from 31 October), Honolulu, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver and (after much anticipation), New York City.

The first flight from New York (JFK) to Auckland (AKL) departs at 21:55 ET with an estimated flight time of 17 and a half hours.

Scandic hotel in Ski will open in 2026 – centrally located

September 19, 2022 – Scandic hotel in Ski – Scandic Hotels has signed an agreement for a new hotel in Ski outside of Oslo, Norway.  The hotel will be centrally located beside the train station and with 15 floors, it will be a new landmark in the city. In addition to 220 rooms, the hotel, which is expected to open in 2026, will also offer meeting facilities and a rooftop bar with panoramic views of the city.

Just a short train ride from Oslo lies the town of Ski in the municipality of Follo. In the coming years, Ski is expected to see strong growth through renovations of the central station and downtown area as well as the new residential areas that are emerging. With the new Follobanen railway that is expected to be completed during 2022, travel time to Oslo is also expected to be significantly shortened, making the area even more attractive to commuters.

– We are very happy to have had this opportunity to open a new Scandic hotel in Ski.  This agreement will strengthen our position in the region surrounding Oslo, which is undergoing rapid development, and at the same time create an exciting new meeting place for people who live and work in the city, says Asle Prestegard, Head of Scandic Hotels Norway.

Scandic hotel in Ski

Scandic’s new hotel will be a landmark that with its central location and proximity to Oslo will attract business and leisure travelers alike. The 15-story building will house both the hotel and offices, and it will be a new meeting hub in the city.

– We see great potential for hotels at public transport hubs. Together with Scandic, we are developing a hotel property that will have a high environmental performance and we’re extremely happy that Ski is being added to the list of cities where we’re establishing hotels, says Morten Austestad, Development Director at Bane NOR Eiendom.

Scandic hotel in Ski: When the hotel opens, like the majority of Scandic’s hotels, it will be ecolabeled according to the Nordic Ecolabel’s new, tougher environmental requirements. The hotel’s use of ecolabeled products and chemicals and 100 percent renewable electricity, the absence of single-use disposables, reduced water consumption, a climate-friendly menu and reduced food waste formed the basis for certification.

The rooms at the new hotel will be designed with circularity in mind and parts of the room interiors will be environmentally certified or made from recycled materials, most of which can be reused or recycled during renovations. The property will also be constructed according to a high environmental and technical standard with the goal to be certified according to BREEM Excellent, one of the highest levels in environmental certification for buildings.

The new hotel will further strengthen Scandic’s presence in the hotel market in the growing region around Oslo. Scandic already operates 19 hotels with a total of 4,211 rooms in and around the capital.

Anantara Hotels Resorts and Spas brings its renowned experiential luxury to the Netherlands

September 16 2022 –

Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas brings its renowned experiential luxury to the Netherlands with Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam.
Located in the city centre and with more than 155 years of history, the much-loved property is in the final stage of an extensive renovation as part of its transition to the luxury Anantara brand and now offers new contemporary guest rooms and suites, a brand-new Anantara Spa and fitness facilities, and a charming interior garden.

Anantara Hotels Resorts and Spas

Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam is located overlooking Dam Square and facing the Royal Palace, in a leafy square that is the beating heart of Amsterdam’s social scene. The magnificent building dates back to 1856, the year that a Polish tailor, Mr. Adolph Wilhelm Krasnapolsky, first opened a coffee house on the site. As the café grew in popularity, he added rooms for rent and later built it into a modern hotel. Today the property celebrates its history proudly with black and white images from the past exhibited throughout, and the celebrated bar, The Tailor, paying tribute to the original craftsmanship of Mr. Krasnapolsky.

With its celebration of historical heritage and contemporary luxury, the 402-room hotel is an enviable base for both business and leisure travellers to experience the thriving city and discover Dutch culture and history. The museum quarter, which includes Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, as well as the capital’s prime shopping district, are within walking distance.

The hotel’s refurbished rooms and suites embrace guests in contemporary style with Anantara signature touches, whilst celebrating Dutch heritage and the famous canals. The interior design sees the guest rooms and suites swathed in warm tones, and soft, tactile fabrics that give warmth and texture. The furniture is inspired by mid-century designs and striking geometric lighting complements the softness of the supple leather headboards and plush cushions. The Presidential Suite with two bedrooms and a spacious layout of 70 sqm provides ample room for family or friends travelling together, whilst the impressive Royal Suite is sure to make any guest feel like royalty with 150 sqm of opulent facilities and expansive views overlooking Dam Square and the National Royal Palace.

Unique dining experiences at the hotel include fine-dining restaurant The White Room, under the helm of former three-Michelin star chef Jacob Jan Boerma, whose refined, modern dishes use the freshest local ingredients from the Netherlands. Grand Café Krasnapolsky and The Champagne Room, both boasting direct frontage onto Dam Square, offer classic, elegant dishes with a contemporary twist, alongside an extensive selection of Champagnes by the glass. Award-winning bar, The Tailor pays tribute to the hotel’s founder and craft with bespoke cocktails amidst warm décor. The hotel’s sumptuous breakfast is served in the iconic inner Wintergarden, instantly recognisable by the magnificent 19th century glass roof.

In keeping with Anantara’s wellness philosophies, the newly added Anantara Spa blends a warm, local welcome with Thai techniques applied with premium products. Swissline is a results-driven brand found exclusively in Amsterdam at Anantara and known for its cellular therapy experts and passion for skin biology. In addition, the spa works with Dutch brand, hannah, whose mission is to bring damaged skin back into balance and slow down aging.

With its relaxation area overlooking the newly landscaped Summer Garden, a charming outdoor space tucked away within the hotel and exclusive in a central Amsterdam property, the spa’s design is influenced by the country’s costal dunes, with tranquil interiors incorporating natural wood and stone to help guests achieve the utmost state of relaxation. Three treatment rooms and Finnish, wet and infrared saunas, offer a blissful retreat from the bustling city outside. The hotel’s new gym is equipped by Technogym, with the latest cardio and weights technology and a rotating climbing wall to challenge guests.

True to Anantara’s philosophy, this is a luxury hotel that connects modern travellers to authentic places, people and stories. The hotel team has created a programme of local experiences that enable guests to fully immerse themselves in the city’s rich culture, celebrating the destination with the added touch of Anantara’s legendary service. Whether it be uncovering Amsterdam’s best kept culinary hideaways – from dining in the Royal Suite, overlooking the historic centre – or exploring the wonderful fishing village of Volendam, guests are spoilt for choice.

Travellers can cruise the city’s canals whilst indulging in a romantic dinner curated by The White Room, cycle the waterways lined with the traditional gabled canal houses, hop around world-class museums with an Anantara expert or enjoy a culinary journey, sampling apple pie or stroopwafel in one of the oldest bars in town, bitterballen (round croquettes), a variety of national cheeses paired with artisan beers or a Jenever from one of Amsterdam’s oldest distilleries.

For families, the hotel team has curated a selection of activities at the stunning Amsterdamse Bos Park, from scenic walks including a delicious signature picnic in the wood, to taking a boat out on the lake, or feeding the sheep at the farm; there’s plenty to keep the whole family busy.

Amsterdam’s charms are endless, but within 30 minutes guests can also take a memorable journey into an endless carpet of tulips, followed by a gourmet lunch or afternoon tea amongst the flowers. Back in the city centre the hotel offers an exclusive shopping opportunity in the high-end boutiques and ateliers of new Dutch designers, a shopaholic’s dream.

The hotel is also a perfect choice for events imbued with authentic local colour, for meetings and conferences ranging from 10 to 1,500 guests. The Wintergarden, a 19th century glass covered inner garden, has been the choice of brides throughout the generations and continues to be a sought-after venue for 21st century couples.

Anantara debuted in Europe in 2017 with the launch of Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort in Portugal, followed by Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Resort in Marbella, Southern Spain. The brand continues its expansion in Europe in iconic properties such as Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome and Anantara New York Palace Budapest, with additional properties to come.

Air Belgium Celebrates First Flight to South Africa

Air Belgium Celebrates First Flight to South Africa

Air Belgium Celebrates First Flight to South Africa

September 15, 2022

A delighted Air Belgium celebrated its first new flights to South Africa yesterday, Wednesday 14 September 2022. The airline said: “Cheers to new flights to South Africa! Our #A330neo takes off from Brussels Airport to Johannesburg and Cape Town

Simultaneous flights to Cape Town and Johannesburg are now available from Brussels Airport every Wednesday and Sunday at 19:45 (arriving 7:15 the following day), while return flights from South Africa to Belgium are on Mondays and Thursdays.

Arriving in South Africa today (Thursday 15 Sep), this is Air Belgium’s first foray into Africa.

The airline had announced its plans in April to operate seasonal flights to South Africa starting in September 2022.

Brussels has historically been Cape Town’s second largest unserved market and the largest unserved European market based on two-way international passenger volumes.

Belgium is the Western Cape’s 7th largest European export market, with R2.61-billion worth of goods exported in 2021, up 81.5% from 2020.

“It is an exciting and important chapter for Air Belgium,” says CEO Niky Terzakis. “But we’re equally thrilled to introduce South Africans to a new airline and an alternative route – and thereby direct access to the heart of Europe.”

According to Terzakis, Air Belgium is committed to offering passengers an experience that is affordable, comfortable, hassle-free, green, and trustworthy.

“We often talk about ‘Belgitude’, and our motto is ‘Fly Belgian Class’, which is all about bringing joy back to international travel,” says Terzakis. “And while our travellers value our fun and engaging approach to travel, we also deliver what really matters: a safe, seamless journey; transparent billing (no hidden fees); and a generous luggage allowance.

What’s more is that we offer travellers an environmentally friendly travel option as the Airbus A330neo consumes on average 25% less fuel compared to previous generation aircraft. Lower fuel consumption also means less CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. Our aircraft offer what is best in comfort aboard: reduced noise level, mod-lighting, and state-of-the art inflight entertainment with WI-FI and internet connection throughout the flight.”

Fares start at R 11,569 for an all-in return ticket between Johannesburg and Brussels and passengers are allowed 30 kg baggage allowance free.

“Of course, for South Africans the real drawcard is Brussels,” says Terzakis. “Not only is it the gateway to Europe, with high-speed trains connecting the city to hubs like London, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam in a couple of hours, but it is also a destination in its own right, with visitors delighting in its rich heritage, food, culture and Belgian spirit.”

The twice-weekly flights are good news for business travellers as Belgium is currently South Africa’s 6 th largest trading partner as well as the Western Cape’s 7 th largest European export market. As such, Belgium is ideally positioned to capture the interest of the corporate and government sectors in South Africa.

“I welcome Air Belgium’s new triangular route between Brussels, Johannesburg and Cape Town. Whether for leisure travel or business travel, this flight will undoubtedly *contribute to boosting* the country’s tourism, its economy and job creation,” says South African Tourism Chief Operations Officer, Nomasonto Ndlovu. She adds that international arrivals to South Africa are increasing steadily, and each new route and connection should be celebrated.

She said: “We are thrilled to welcome the Air Belgium team, and it’s fitting that their first flight arrives in the middle of September, which is Tourism Month in South Africa, when we celebrate, champion, and recognise the importance of our tourism industry.”

On its website, Air Belgium is promoting South Africa’s “steep coastline and majestic wildlife” offering a “variety of sceneries and experiences without changing countries! Plan your dream holiday in Cape Town or Johannesburg and enjoy the thrill of the ocean and lasting memories in the wilderness.”

The Airbus A330neo flight offers 30 seats in Business Class, 21 seats in Premium Class and 235 Economy Class seats; and includes the latest ecological, environmental and technological advantages.

In April, Western Cape Minister of Finance, David Maynier said: “Air Brussels focuses on leisure travel and shows that there is a clear uptick in demand for flights to Cape Town and the Western Cape, which is good for our economy and the creation of jobs in the Western Cape.”

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, México to open in late 2022

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, México to open in late 2022

September 15, 2022 –

The Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, México is now accepting reservations ahead of its anticipated opening in late 2022. The Resort will offer 157 contemporary Mexican accommodations – many with private pools – plus four restaurants and bars, a superb golf course, a transformative spa and wellness experience, and much more.

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo

“In Tamarindo, we are creating a new resort experience that is deeply connected both physically and spiritually with its surroundings,” notes Vince Parrotta, Four Seasons president, Hotel Operations – Americas West. “Working closely with our visionary owner partners and myriad local and regional designers and artisans, we are offering something entirely new. To put it simply, if you think you know Mexico, you haven’t been to Tamarindo.”

A defining characteristic of the Resort is that just 2% of the surrounding nature reserve will be developed. “We are dedicated to the concept of ‘rewilding,’ enabling the Earth’s natural rhythms to flourish and nature to recover its balance,” says the Resort’s general manager Felix Murillo. “Everything we are doing is guided by this ethos, and it is our hope that our guests will form a deep connection both to the land and the coastline, and that in doing so they can recover their own balance and leave inspired and energised.”

With unique features including an on-site working farm, Rancho Ortega, and a Discovery Centre that will serve as an introduction to nearly unlimited exploration and recreational pursuits, guests will be able to create their own version of paradise in this undiscovered part of Mexico.

“Jalisco is one of the most economically and culturally important states in Mexico, owing to its natural resources as well as its long history and culture,” says Enrique Alfaro Ramirez, Governor of Jalisco, México. “We are proud to welcome visitors of the state to Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, México, a resort that represents the best in Mexican talent and celebrates Jalisco’s rich land, people and traditions.”

A Unique Collaboration

“In Tamarindo, we are showcasing the very best of what this destination has to offer in an unmatched natural oceanside setting,” says Pedro Verea Hernandez, CEO of Paralelo 19, the owners of Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, México. “We are thrilled to work with Four Seasons in bringing this vision to life.”

An integral part of the character of the Resort is puro talento Mexicano, the celebration of Mexican talent across all design disciplines, beginning with a partnership between the country’s greatest contemporary architects, Victor Legorreta and Mauricio Rocha, who came together as LegoRocha specifically for this project. LegoRocha, along with lead interior designers Uribe Krayer, and Estudio Esterlina, have effused every space and touchpoint with elements of pre-Hispanic culture and contemporary Mexican aesthetics. The team was also joined by landscape designer Mario Schjetnan, and restaurant designers Esrawe Studio and Bibiana Huber to complete the Resort´s contemporary Mexican look and feel. From employee fashion by Mexico City-based designer Kris Goyri to tableware, hammocks, hampers, candles and countless functional items and decorative details hand made by philanthropic alliances throughout the country, guests will feel connected to Mexico’s rich heritage and modern lifestyle at every turn.

Exploring the Reserve

The centre of Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo is the Discovery Centre, a starting point to engaging in the natural cycles of the region from ocean to jungle across the Reserve. The Resort’s on-site team of biologists is eager to introduce guests to the area’s biodiversity, including its more than 70 endemic species of wildlife and hundreds of birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles to be seen throughout the Reserve’s more than 3,000 acres (1,220 hectares).

While on-site chef’s gardens have become standard at many hotels, the Resort team saw the broader possibilities offered by the region’s microclimate, and thus Rancho Ortega, a 35 acre (14 hectare) working farm, was born. Here, under the vision and leadership of Four Seasons culinary director Nicolás Piatti, the cultivating of indigenous and newly introduced plants supplies the Resort’s restaurants with true zero-mile, root-to-dish produce. It also serves as a study centre for rare species, sustainable farming, and creative culinary exploration.

“We have a flock of egg-producing chickens roaming the farm now, and there are 17 varieties of fruit trees already producing pomegranates, figs, cocoa, guava and more,” notes Chef Piatti, who has also spent months sourcing additional products from throughout the country, including a selection of endemic corn varieties from the Yucatan.

“And we are particularly excited at the progress of more than 8,500 agave azul plants we are cultivating here at the Resort with the blessing of Mexico’s Tequila Regulatory Council,” he smiles.

Dining at Four Seasons – Celebrating the region’s dramatic seasonality and blending traditional flavours with modern techniques and ingredient-forward creativity, the Resort’s four food and drink outlets will offer settings for everything from starlit dinners to barefoot lunches and opportunities to raise a glass with old and new friends.

Air Canada transports live animals safely – 1st airline to receive IATA Recertification

Air Canada transports live animals safely

Air Canada transports live animals safely

September 15, 2022 – Air Canada transports live animals safely.

  • Airline awarded the Center of Excellence for Independent Validators for Live Animals Logistics (CEIV Live Animals) certificate
  • In 2021, Air Canada Cargo safely transported over 11,500 different animal shipments across its network

MONTREAL, Sept. 14, 2022 /CNW Telbec/ – Air Canada has become the first airline to be re-certified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for the safe transport of live animals by Air Canada Cargo. IATA awarded Air Canada Cargo with the Center of Excellence for Independent Validators for Live Animals Logistics (CEIV Live Animals) recertification following successful completion of the verification process.

Air Canada transports live animals safely

“We are very proud to be recognized for our work in operating to the highest global standards for the worldwide transport of all live animals, and being the first airline to be re-certificated continues to position Air Canada Cargo as an industry leader.

Every year, we expertly and safely handle thousands of complex shipments, from rescued dogs, endangered animals transported in conservation efforts,  and of course family pets. Air Canada Cargo’s dedicated employees handling animals are specially-trained, and I thank them for their diligence in treating all animals as precious cargo while in our care,” said Jason Berry, Vice President, Cargo at Air Canada.

Air Canada transports live animals safely: Air Canada was the first airline to receive the CEIV Live Animals certification in 2018, a standardized global certification program to improve and reinforce the safety and welfare of animals travelling by air.

As part of the recertification process, a thorough audit was conducted by IATA’s specialists, who reviewed Air Canada Cargo’s live animal transport policies and procedures. Compliance with the IATA Live Animal Regulations (LAR) was fully reviewed as was compliance with protocols like the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Wellness travel is still in demand, bringing new resorts to bloom

Wellness travel is still in demand, bringing new resorts to bloom

Wellness travel is still in demand, bringing new resorts to bloom

With demand for wellness experiences showing no signs of slowing, pioneering players in the destination wellness space are finding the category ripe for expansion.

The Ranch, Sensei and Amrit are opening expansive new properties in the next year. And according to wellness experts, it’s a category in which new product has historically been in short supply.

Jill Radin-Leeds, founder and president of Florida-based Just Spas & Adventures, said that some clients who checked existing wellness meccas off their lists have been waiting for the next great wellness hot spot.

“Those that have already been to a Canyon Ranch or Miraval and enjoyed those experiences [tend to be looking] for something a little bit different that they haven’t experienced before,” said Radin-Leeds. “And as far as those types of destination spas go, people are sometimes surprised when they say, ‘I’ve been here, here and here; where else can I go?’ and they find out there are really only a handful of those destinations in the U.S.”

Radin-Leeds cited the upcoming opening of the Amrit Ocean Resort & Residences on Singer Island in Palm Beach, Fla., as a highly anticipated property in the destination wellness space. The resort, which will be anchored by a 100,000-square-foot spa and wellness facility, is on track to debut sometime next year.

Roger Allen, group CEO of RLA Global, an advisory firm specializing in hospitality, leisure and well-being tourism, said part of the reason that purpose-built, large-scale wellness destinations remain few and far between is that they’re inherently difficult to scale.

“There are some very good wellness brands, but we haven’t really seen them move across the global market like traditional hospitality brands,” said Allen. “It’s very hard to replicate their DNA in other markets. Based on Miraval’s DNA, for example, Miraval needs a very large site. So there are a lot of challenges in replicating those brands.”

Miraval opened its first East Coast resort, and its third property, in western Massachusetts in mid-2020. The Ranch, which has long cultivated a cult following around its Southern California flagship, the Ranch Malibu, and specializes in highly regimented fitness retreats, partnered with the Palazzo Fiuggi Wellness Medical Retreat in Italy earlier this spring to launch the Ranch Italy at Palazzo Fiuggi retreat program. This summer, the brand also said it plans to open an East Coast location, the Ranch Hudson Valley, in upstate New York next summer.

Alex Glasscock, the Ranch’s founder and CEO, said the pandemic played a key role in accelerating the company’s plans to extend its reach. After Covid caused the Ranch Malibu to pause operations for most of the first half of 2020, it ended up with a lengthy waitlist and plenty of pent-up demand.

“And we noticed that people were booking out further in advance, so we were booked out for a full six months, which was upsetting to a lot of our guests, because they typically don’t want to wait that long,” said Glasscock. “So that really motivated us to open the Ranch Italy and then look at additional locations.”

Also in expansion mode is Sensei, the cutting-edge wellness brand co-founded by tech mogul Larry Ellison. Known for its science-backed, hyperpersonalized wellness approach that takes measure of everything from a guest’s heart rate to REM sleep, Sensei offers its programs at the Sensei Lanai, a Four Seasons Resort in Hawaii and, come November, will open a new outpost, the Sensei Porcupine Creek in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Like the Ranch, Sensei has enjoyed what Kevin Kelly, Sensei’s CEO, describes as “very strong demand” throughout the pandemic.

“Over the last two years, what we’ve found is that our wellness customer spends 50% more when they’re with us versus the traditional luxury traveler,” said Kelly.

New locations fit the brands

Both the Ranch Hudson Valley and Sensei Porcupine Creek will be unique from a site perspective. In order to offer the Ranch’s signature hiking-heavy programming, the Ranch Hudson Valley will be set on an estate that includes more than 200 acres of forest and touts proximity to two state parks.

The 22-room Sensei Porcupine Creek, meanwhile, will occupy what was once Ellison’s 230-acre private estate, which Kelly said will ensure the property “meets the same luxurious requirements” set by the brand’s Lanai-based outpost.

Both properties are also using their expansions to not only cater to existing customers but tap into new demographics and travel occasions.

At the Ranch Hudson Valley, for example, the brand will offer three-day and four-day programs — dubbed the Ranch 3.0 and 4.0, respectively — that provide a shorter, more accessible alternative to the core seven-day retreat available at the Ranch Malibu.

“Not only have these programs received interest from an individual level, but our intention was to also attract groups with the Ranch 3.0, whether it be corporate groups or groups of friends,” said Glasscock. “We’ve determined that the shorter stay is perfect for groups or companies looking for a wellness backdrop for their brainstorming or planning sessions.”

Sensei’s mainland debut, meanwhile, will give the brand a chance to attract guests from drive markets.

“There are a lot of people waiting to be able to drive to this property versus fly to Lanai,” said Kelly. “But there’s also the [fly-in demand] from all the major hubs, like New York, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta and Washington.”

Dawn Oliver, a wellness travel specialist and founder of Florida-based Well Xplored, views new product from the likes of the Ranch as a sign that interest in more serious, results-oriented wellness offerings is on the rise.

“I’m very excited about the new Ranch that’s opening up,” Oliver said. “And the fact that it’s a rigorous wellness program shows that when it comes to something more rigorous, well, there’s definitely a demand for that.”

Helsinki Design Tour

Helsinki has been a popular design destination for decades. Almost as if to remind of it – the city celebrated as World Design Capital in the year 2012.

But long gone are the natives such as architects Aalto and Saarinen – while future creative talents now proudly carry on making the Helsinki of 2020 and beyond.

Helsinki is the centre of arts and sciences in Finland. Finnish design is well renowned, and rightly so. Some of the big names include Iittala, Marimekko, Arabia and Artek.

On the walking portion of the tour, visit the boutiques and galleries of the Design District Helsinki and a drive to the Arabia District, the most important design cluster in Finland – the home to the Iittala Arabia porcelain production.

A walking tour of the Arabia factory includes a visit to the Arabia museum, followed by a shopping break in the factory’s shop.

Have a coffee stop on the way in one of design coffee shops!

Kiasma is a museum of contemporary art under the umbrella of the Finnish National Gallery. The basic functions of the museum are organising changing exhibitions and augmenting its collection, along with research and presentation of the works.

The primary focus in the museum collection is on Finnish contemporary art. The collection is also supplemented by commissioning new work.

The collection is presented to the public in annually changing thematic exhibitions. Kiasma was designed by the American architect Steven Holl and
opened to the public in 1998.

US position in the travel and tourism market – positively still number 1

US position in the travel and tourism market

US position in the travel and tourism market

September 14, 2022-  The latest World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Economic Trends Report reveals the US position in the travel and tourism market is still number 1 – the U.S. remains the world’s biggest and most powerful Travel & Tourism market.

Its top ranking was reaffirmed, despite suffering long and damaging travel restrictions which did little to halt the spread of COVID-19 and only resulted in serious economic losses.

However, while its number one position was retained, the U.S. Travel & Tourism sector’s contribution to the nation’s economy fell by US$700 billion in 2019, to just under US$1.3 trillion last year.

US position in the travel and tourism market

Research by Oxford Economics for WTTC shows there has been no change in the top three countries – with China second and Germany third.

But the rankings are illusionary as the top economies bolstered their numbers through domestic travel, while international visitor numbers plummeted.

In the U.S., International traveller spend rankings saw it toppled from its pre-pandemic top position.

US position in the travel and tourism market: But despite the challenges of the past two years, the new report from the global tourism body shows business travel is on the road to recovery.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Our report shows the resilience of the Travel & Tourism sector, despite the impact of travel restrictions around the world which failed to halt the spread of the virus.

“Despite a challenging macro environment, Travel & Tourism has bounced back. The world, with some exceptions, is travelling again. And we are seeing a resurgence in business travel. Over the next 10 years, Travel & Tourism growth will outstrip the global economy.”

WTTC’s data reveals that in terms of the Travel & Tourism sector’s contribution to GDP, China held onto its second position, with more than US$814 billion, while Germany remained the third biggest Travel & Tourism sector in the world, contributing US$251 billion to the German economy.

The UK slipped dramatically from fifth place in 2019 to ninth in 2021, with a contribution of just over US$157 billion, the biggest faller of the top 10 countries.

US position in the travel and tourism market: In terms of international traveller spend, France, which before the pandemic struck was in fourth place, overtook Spain, China, and the U.S. to grab first place.

China, which remains closed to much of the rest of the world, was in second place before the pandemic, but fell dramatically to 11th position in 2021.

Across Asia Pacific, major Travel & Tourism markets such as Thailand and Japan saw huge losses in international spending, which resulted in both markets – in fifth and eighth place respectively before the pandemic – falling out of the top 20 altogether in 2021.

US position in the travel and tourism market: According to WTTC’s predictions, worldwide business travel is expected to grow more than 41% this year. For the next 10 years it predicts business travel could grow an average of 5.5% annually and may return faster in the Asia-Pacific region.

WTTC predicts by 2032, China could overtake the U.S. to become the world’s biggest Travel & Tourism market.

The research shows China’s Travel & Tourism sector’s contribution to GDP could reach US$3.9 trillion by 2032, making it the world’s most powerful Travel & Tourism market, and India could leapfrog Germany to reach third place with a projected value of US$457 billion.

Etihad launches flights between Abu Dhabi and Guangzhou

September 13, 2022 –

Etihad Airways is set to start flying to Guangzhou next month, becoming the first international airline to operate long-haul passenger services to the top three Chinese gateways since the start of the pandemic.

Subject to regulatory approvals, the twice-weekly passenger service to Guangzhou will start on 10 October, initially using a two-class Boeing 777.

The new route means Etihad will be offering guests convenient access to three Chinese gateways as Guangzhou is added to existing services to Shanghai which resumed in July 2020 and Beijing, which resumed in June 2022.

Martin Drew, Etihad’s Senior Vice President Global Sales and Cargo, said: “We are proud to offer our guests a third destination in China as Etihad Airways begins flights to the pivotal and historic port city of Guangzhou. As well as being a modern and rapidly growing city itself, Guangzhou has excellent connections with the Greater Bay Area.

“Our twice-weekly service will further address the huge demand for passenger travel between the UAE and China, as well as provide new cargo capacity, building on the formidable people and business ties between the two markets.”

With the addition of these new services from 10 October, Etihad will offer four weekly flights between Abu Dhabi and China: two services per week to Guangzhou and weekly services to Beijing and Shanghai.

Those wishing to book are advised to visit Etihad.com, and to remain informed on the relevant entry regulations at their end destination.

Flights are also available for booking through the Etihad mobile app, by calling the Etihad Airways Contact Centre on +971 600 555 666 (UAE) or +86 400 8822 050 (Mainland China), or through local or online travel agencies.
