April 5, 2022 – Most Instagrammable Hotel in the World

The Shore Club Turks and Caicos has been crowned “The Most Instagrammable Hotel in the World” for 2022, following up on its victory last year, making it Luxury Travel Advisor‘s first-ever repeat champion.

Following six rounds of voting, where we started with 64 hotels from across the world broken down into four regional brackets, we have finally named a winner. In its Final Round matchup, The Shore Club took down Wildwaters Lodge by securing 51.42 percent of the vote.

What’s most impressive is over 145,000 people voted in the round (with the breakdown being 74,637 in favor of The Shore Club and 70,509 for Wildwaters Lodge). The champ came out of the Latin America and Caribbean bracket, while the runner-up represented Europe and Africa.

Honorable mentions this year belong to Marina Bay Sands, the champion of the Asia, Indian Ocean and South Pacific bracket, and Hotel NH Collection New York Madison Avenue, which came out of the North America bracket.

Prior to its final round matchup, The Shore Club Turks and Caicos faced tough competition in the semifinals against Hotel NH Collection New York Madison Avenue (the North America winner), edging out the property with just under 51 percent of the vote (4,475 to 4,306). In an earlier close contest, it topped Mexico’s Wayam Mundo Imperial with just over 51 percent of the vote 2,778 to 2,626). The hotel previously knocked down Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal in the Round of 16, receiving just over 60 percent of the vote.

The Shore Club had won the first round against Vista Encantada Spa Resort & Residences and followed it up with a win over Conrad Tulum in Round 2. The most popular location for Instagram shots at The Shore Club Turks and Caicos is on the hotel’s Colonnade Pool Swings. We, and you all, clearly see why!

Bringing snow skiing to Lebanon

Bringing snow skiing to Lebanon

Bringing snow skiing to Lebanon

In 1960 a group of passionate skiers installed the first ski lift imported from Switzerland on the Refuge
hill and built the first four chalets in the region. A year later, the aim of extending the zone was set and
works started with the concession to build and operate ski lifts.

A three-seater chairlift is installed to reach the peak of Mzaar, the highest peak in the area, followed later by several other chairlifts, bringing the number of lifts in the resort to 19 and the area became one of the famous ski stations in the country.

Lebanon, a mountainous country with summits reaching heights of over 10,000 feet, is often referred to as the “Switzerland of the East”.

Lebanon is home to six well-equipped, ski resorts, located on the Mount Lebanon range that faces the Mediterranean and offers terrific downhill ski slopes.FarayaMzaarKfardebian, The Cedars, Laqlouq, Fakra, QanatBakich, Zaarour.

One of the special resorts, theOyoune el Simaneresort known today as MzaarKfardebian formerly known as FarayaMzaarthe largest ski resort in the Middle East.Located at only 1 hour from Beirut, MzaarKfardebian ski area is widely regarded as one of the most scenic and entertaining mountain resorts in Lebanon.

Not only are you immersed in natural beauty with the mountains surrounding you, immersed in the picturesque Mount Lebanon scenery, but the skiing at Mzaar is absolutely fantastic.

The name

“Mzaar” is the Arabic word for sanctuary. The highest mountain in Ouyoune el Simane was called “jabal el mzaar” (mountain of the sanctuary) after a small Roman temple built on its top. It is believed that the Romans were using fire as signals to communicate between the costal area and Baalbeck, or Heliopolis, through Faqra and the Mzaar peak. The temple was totally destroyed during the civil war (1975-1990) and its stones were stolen.

The real name of the area is Ouyoune el Simane (Meaning Simane springs) and it is administratively under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Kfardebian, which is also the case for the Faqra area, although the resort is commonly referred to as “Faraya-Mzaar” or “Faraya”.

According to carter, dunston&thomas, 2004.In the book “Syria and Lebanon”.Skiing ranges between heights of 1,850 metres (6,070 ft) at Mzaar-Kfardebian, to 2,465 metres (8,087 ft)on the peak above Mzaar. On the top of Mzaar slope, upon exiting the chairlift, there is a view over the Bekaa valley, Mount Hermon of the Anti-Lebanon and other peaks like Zaarour, Laqlouq and the Cedars. Coastal towns and the capital Beirut can be seen on clear days.

The peaks of the Mzaar-Kfardebian mountain range vary between heights of 1,913 and 2,465 metres (6,276 and 8,087 ft). The highest peak is Mzaar, followed by Wardeh and Jabal Dib (mountain of the wolf) Peak, offer challenges for the experienced skier or snowboarder.

The ski resort has 42 slopes and 80 kilometers of groomed tracks. The skiing season in Lebanon is similar in length to that of the Alps stretching over a period of 4 months.

Three other peaks are well suited for beginners, and even more are adapted to skier of intermediate level. In addition, there are a number of cross-country trails.

Amazing facts about Angkor Wat in Cambodia

Amazing facts about Angkor Wat in Cambodia

Amazing facts about Angkor Wat in Cambodia

Did you know that the largest religious monument in the world stretches over 162 hectares? The name means “City of Temples” and it is so important, it even features on the official flag of its country.

Amazing, right?

Do you know where we can see this City of Temples?

Angkor Wat is situated in Siem Reap in northwest Cambodia. It is a temple complex and one of the most important religious monuments in the world. It has become the symbol of Cambodia and the pride of its people.

The massive temple site is a must-see when visiting the country and it attracts nearly 2.6 million tourists every year.

It is the largest religious monument in the world stretching over some 162.6 hectares, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park is the largest religious site in the world. Scattered across the park are the remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire. These date from the 9th to the 15th century. This includes 72 major temples and many minor temples.

Angkor Wat is an enormous Buddhist temple complex located in northern Cambodia. It was originally built in the first half of the 12th century as a Hindu temple.

Spread across more than 400 acres, Angkor Wat is said to be the largest religious monument in the world. Its name, which translates to “temple city” in the Khmer language of the region, references the fact it was built by Emperor Suryavarman II, who ruled the region from 1113 to 1150, as the state temple and political centre of his empire.

Originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, Angkor Wat became a Buddhist temple by the end of the 12th century.

Although it is no longer an active temple, it serves as an important tourist attraction in Cambodia, despite the fact it sustained significant damage during the autocratic rule of the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s and in earlier regional conflicts.

Where Is Angkor Wat?

Angkor Wat is located roughly five miles north of the modern Cambodian city of Siem Reap, which has a population of more than 200,000 people.

However, when it was built, it served as the capital of the Khmer empire, which ruled the region at the time. The word “Angkor” means “capital city” in the Khmer language, while the word “Wat” means “temple.”

Initially, Angkor Wat was designed as a Hindu temple, as that was the religion of the region’s ruler at the time, Suryavarman II. However, by the end of the 12th century, it was considered a Buddhist site.

As Angkor Wat’s significance within the Buddhist religion of the region increased, so too did the legend surrounding the site. Many Buddhists believe the temple’s construction was ordered by the god Indra, and that the work was accomplished in one night.

However, scholars now know it took several decades to build Angkor Wat, from the design phase to completion.

Angkor Wat’s Design

Although Angkor Wat was no longer a site of political, cultural or commercial significance by the 13th century, it remained an important monument for the Buddhist religion into the 1800s.

Indeed, unlike many historical sites, Angkor Wat was never truly abandoned. Rather, it fell gradually into disuse and disrepair.

Nonetheless, it remained an architectural marvel unlike anything else. It was “rediscovered” in 1840s by the French explorer Henri Mouhot, who wrote that the site was “grander than anything left to us by Greece or Rome.”

The compliment can likely be attributed to the temple’s design, which is supposed to represent Mount Meru, the home of the gods, according to tenets of both the Hindu and Buddhist faiths. Its five towers are intended to recreate the five peaks of Mount Meru, while the walls and moat below honour the surrounding mountain ranges and the sea.

The most famous is the Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations.

Dinner in Giant Ferris Wheel in Vienna

Dinner in Giant Ferris Wheel in Vienna

The Ferris Wheel is one of the most visited monuments in the Danube metropolis. It was built in 1896-1897 at the same time as the one of Chicago, London, Blackpool and Paris.

Today, Giant Ferries Wheel Vienna offers its visitors the opportunity to raise at a height of about 65 meters to offer a magnificent panorama of Vienna.

From the top of its 65 metres, the Ferris Wheel in Vienna is one of the largest and most famous tourist attractions of Vienna.

It was built in 1897 as a commemoration for Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, for his 50th year as the Austrian ruler, and has since offered visitors of Vienna the possibility to enjoy a splendid panoramic view over the Prater Park and Vienna old town, while making the most of a Ferris wheel ride.

Apart from during the three weeks of technical repairs in January, the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel is open all year round according to the season. The Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel proposes public tours, but it is also possible to book private tours, and even to combine them with catering services such as banquets, buffets and romantic candlelight dinners.

It is possible for groups to book private waggons on Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel for private rides. In total, six special waggons offer each enough room for 12 persons maximum: you can choose between four cocktail waggons and two luxury waggons.

The rental of special waggons offers several advantages: the equipment and comfort are superior to those of the classical waggons on the Vienna Wheel; the atmosphere is more relaxed because you have the waggon for yourself, and for that same reason, getting on and off the waggon is done without wasting time.

Dinner in Giant Ferris Wheel in Vienna

In addition, when you book special waggons the ride can be combined with onboard catering services, for example for a champagne reception or for coffee. The waggons of the Wheel can be booked for an unlimited time during opening times, the rental time is charged per started half hours.

Picturesque streets and stunning views in Malta

Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua, known as the Three Cities of Malta, are pieces of living history kept alive by hundreds of years of preservation, and the occasional miracle. The fortified cities sit like a trio of villages in the heart of Malta’s historic centre, directly across the Grand Harbour from Valletta.

Vittoriosa, the oldest of the 3 fortified cities collectively known as The Three Cities is only 800m long and 400m at its widest and best explored on foot.

The small winding streets, spectacular views of Valletta and The Grand Harbour and it’s off the beaten track atmosphere will leave a lasting impression on that visit.

Picturesque streets and stunning views in Malta

Vittoriosa is a very old locality with its origins reaching back to medieval times. Military powers that wanted to rule the Maltese islands would need to obtain control of Vittoriosa (at that time known as Birgu) due to its significant position in the Grand Harbour.

In fact, it served as the base of the Order of Saint John and de facto capital city of Malta from 1530 to 1571. Fort St Angelo, on the tip of Vittoriosa’s peninsula, has been restored and is now open to the public.

The promenade stretching down from Vittoriosa’s Cottonera Waterfront has been revamped and offers a variety of restaurants and cafés.

Cospicua is the largest of the Three Cities of Malta. Originally known as Bormia, the city was awarded the name Cospicua (meaning conspicuous) by the Knights in honour of the brave people who inhabited it during the Great Siege.

While much of the city was destroyed during numerous battles over the course of Malta’s tumultuous history, it has been proudly rebuilt and visitors can explore a series of charming, winding streets studded with historical and cultural sites. A more modern Cospicua can be found along the coastal part of the city, where the old dockyard is being redeveloped into a beautiful marina.

One of the highlights of Cospicua for most visitors is The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Many people consider the collegiate church a miraculous site after it survived WWII, a battle that flattened most of the city around it.

Nowadays, it’s filled with exquisite works of art, including a stunning painting of The Madonna and Child by Italian painter Polidoro Veneziano, which rests above the high altar.

Another major landmark is the defence fortifications on the edge of the city. Visitors can discover two sets: the Firenzuola Fortifications, which were built around the Three Cities of Malta in 1638; and the more localised Cottonera Lines, which surround Cospicua and were introduced in 1670.

It’s thanks to these walls that the cities didn’t endure further damage during Malta’s many battles, so they’re an integral part of the island’s history.

Senglea is a small, fortified city on a peninsular parallel to Vittoriosa. A pedestrian bridge connects it to its larger neighbour and two grand forts – Fort St Michael and Fort St Angelo – stand guard either side of the city. Unlike the other Three Cities of Malta, Senglea escaped from the Great Siege relatively unscathed, thanks to protection from the forts. The city was renamed from L’Isla (meaning ‘the island’) to Senglea, after the man who fortified it in 1551, Grand Master Claude de la Senglea. It’s also commonly known as Citta’ Invicta (the invincible city). However, Senglea’s luck unfortunately ran out during WWII, when a staggering 75% of its buildings were damaged. In the years since, many key sites (such as the Our Lady of Victories Parish Church) have been restored to their former glory.

Who would like some South African Milktart

Good ol’ melktert; the Afrikaans name for ‘milk tart’; the classic, South African dessert consisting of a sweet pastry crust, filled with a mild, creamy custard of milk, flour, sugar and eggs, baked in a round pie tin and dusted with cinnamon after baking.

Milk tart is omnipresent in South Africa; it appears at every church bazaar, bake sale, home industry, supermarket, or bakery, and has surely featured on every South African food blogger’s blog.
Melktert stems from the Dutch settlers in the Cape in the 1600s.

Traditionally, the crust consisted of short-crust pastry. These days, many use ready-made puff pastry dough instead. Ancestors would turn in their graves hearing that crustless melktart has become a thing.

The large proportion of milk in the filling is evidence that melktert was introduced to us by the Dutch dairy farmers who settled the Cape of Good Hope in the middle of the century.

Cinnamon, introduced to us by Javanese slaves, is often sprinkled over the surface.

4. Once the milk is hot, whisk two ladles full of the milk into the egg mixture to temper the eggs.
5. Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook until thickened, whisking continuously. Cook the custard for 2-3 minutes until thick and smooth.
6. Pass the custard through a fine-mesh sieve. Beat in the butter.
7. Pour the custard into the prepared crust. Spray a piece of parchment paper with cooking spray then press onto the surface of the custard to avoid a skin from forming.
8. Place the milk tart in the fridge and allow to set for at least 4 hours but ideally overnight.
9. Before serving, dust the cinnamon over the milk tart. Slice and serve.

Tour the amazing Riviera Maya including Rio Secreto

The wonderful nature reserve of Rio Secreto is home to a cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites, hidden for centuries. As the story goes, a local farmer found the entrance while chasing an iguana, discovering a dazzling series of chambers, with rock formations dating back 2.5 million years.

Come with us on a magical journey through the crystal museum that is Río Secreto, where the history of our planet is written on the myriad geological formations, and where floating in its clear fresh water your life will change forever.

Tour the amazing Riviera Maya including Rio Secreto

Río Secreto could very well be one of the great world wonders. Experience this stunning underground river with thousands of dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. It’s like stepping back in time to witness something mysterious and truly spectacular.

We will walk, swim and rapel through the cavern. At times, it is so dark you feel like you’re totally blind.

Often lauded as one of the best kept secrets on the Yucatan Peninsula, Río Secreto (or Secret River) is an underground river and collection of caves. The bright turquoise water contrasts with the caramel- and mocha-colored rock formations within the caves, which include stalactites and stalagmites. Visitors can swim in the river, climb through the caves and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Recent travelers said this adventure was the highlight of their trip to Playa del Carmen, noting that the tour was fascinating and that they learned a lot about the Mayans and the land’s natural history. Many also said this is a great rainy day activity since most of the exploration occurs underground. One gripe among reviewers: Visitors are not allowed to bring their cameras. Though a staff photographer is following you around and you have the option to purchase photos at the end of the tour, travelers said the photos are overpriced. If you don’t have a wetsuit or water shoes, you can rent them through the company that runs the attraction.

Río Secreto is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Finally, we’ll enjoy a cocktail in the breath-taking Salon de la Paz cave.
