Switzerland entry restrictions lifted for travellers

Travellers from all countries will soon be able to enter Switzerland without having to follow any COVID-19 rules as the latter will drop all of its measures on May 2. Starting from May 2, all travellers, regardless of their country of origin, will be permitted restriction-free entry to Switzerland.

Switzerland entry restrictions

“The entry restrictions currently in place will be lifted from May 2. As of that date, the usual rules for entering Switzerland will apply,” the statement of the State Secretariat for Migration said. Currently, all travellers are required to hold a valid vaccination or recovery certificate in order to be permitted restriction-free entry to Switzerland.

However, as soon as the new entry rules start applying, travellers will no longer be required to hold a valid vaccination or recovery certificate. The Swiss authorities have explained that from May 2, travellers will only be required to follow the other rules, such as holding a valid passport or visa, if such a requirement applies to them.

Thailand lifts RT-PCR testing requirement for international arrivals from 1 May 2022

Thailand lifts RT-PCR testing requirement

Thailand lifts RT-PCR testing

April 25, 2022, Thailand lifts RT-PCR testing requirement for international arrivals from 1 May 2022

Travellers will be allowed to enter the kingdom without the pre-arrival nor arrival tests.

Thailand’s Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) today approved the lifting of the RT-PCR testing requirement for international arrivals beginning 1 May, 2022, and introduced two new entry schemes specifically customised for vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers.

TAT Newsroom will be providing updates in detail via www.tatnews.org once the official directives have been announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette.

Thailand lifts RT-PCR testing requirement

New entry rules for vaccinated travellers:

International travellers who are fully vaccinated will no longer be required to show proof of a pre-arrival negative RT-PCR test nor undergo an arrival test.

They are still required to register for a Thailand Pass (via https://tp.consular.go.th/) with a Certificate of COVID-19 Vaccination and an insurance policy with coverage no less than US$10,000 (reduced from US$20,000).

Once arriving in Thailand, they will be allowed entry and are free to go anywhere  in the kingdom.

New entry rules for unvaccinated travellers:

International travellers who are unvaccinated or are not fully vaccinated will also no longer be required to show proof of a pre-arrival negative RT-PCR test nor undergo an arrival test.

They are required to register for a Thailand Pass with a 5-day hotel booking and an insurance policy with coverage no less than US$10,000 (reduced from US$20,000).

Once arriving in Thailand, they must proceed to undergo the quarantine for 5 days and undergo an RT-PCR test on Day 5.

Exception is made for unvaccinated travellers who are able to upload proof of a negative RT-PCR test within 72 hours of travel via the Thailand Pass system, they – like those fully vaccinated – will be allowed entry and are free to go anywhere in the kingdom.

While in Thailand, both vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers are advised to strictly follow health and safety standards. Travellers who are experiencing COVID-like symptoms should get tested. If testing positive, they must get the appropriate medical treatment.

Kindly note the information is to serve as reference only. It is especially important to check in regularly on www.tatnews.org to stay current on what remains a very fluid and fast changing situation.

New cyber resilience report for the global Travel and Tourism sector

New cyber resilience report

New cyber resilience report by WTTC

April 22, 2022- The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) launched a major new report at its Global Summit in Manila today, to help the sector’s stakeholders understand how cyber resilience is shaping the Travel & Tourism sector and plan for a safer and more robust future.

New cyber resilience report

The report, ‘Codes to resilience’, in joint efforts with Microsoft, draws on comprehensive research and in-depth interviews with cyber security experts in leading Travel & Tourism organisations such as Mastercard, JTB, and Carnival Corporation, among others.

The new cyber resilience report shows that whilst the COVID-19 pandemic has propelled the world and the sector into a more digital future, with the opportunities provided by digitalisation, new challenges have emerged, especially in cybercrime.

The inaugural report focuses on three key areas considered critical for the sector: cyber resilience, key issues and six best practices based on the lessons learnt prior to and during the pandemic.

The report goes on to show how digitalisation has become a strong enabler of business within Travel & Tourism, and given the international nature of the sector, it looks at the role of legislation around individual data protection.

According to the new cyber resilience report, more than seven out of 10 (72%)SMEs in the UK, the U.S., and Europe, have fallen victim to at least one cyberattack, and with SMEs representing 80% of all Travel & Tourism businesses, mitigating cyber risk must remain a priority for the sector.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Technology and digitalisation play a key role in making the whole travel experience more seamless, from booking a holiday, to checking in for a flight or embarking on a cruise.

“But the impact of cyberattacks carries enormous financial, reputational and regulatory risk.”

This new cyber resilience report is quite critical and reveals four key issues to address in order to improve cyber protection and enhance resilience: securing identity data, securing business operations, understanding the impact of COVID-19 and managing global legislation.

According to the report, certain actions can help businesses better prepare to repel an attack, while laying the foundation to support long-term cyber resilience. Educating and training all staff, expanding risk security beyond the physical workplace, employing a zero-trust approach to cyber security, and transparency, among others, have been recommended by industry experts as good practices.

Cyber resilience is a crucial element to the future of Travel & Tourism, as cyber systems continue to facilitate and enhance activities between the sector’s stakeholders.

During a panel session at the tourism body’s Global Summit event being held in Manila today, industry leaders heard that cybercrime has cost the global economy U.S.$1 trillion and could reach a staggering U.S. $90 trillion by 2030.

According to the WTTC Economic Impact Report, in 2019, before the pandemic stopped travel in its tracks, the Travel & Tourism sector generated more than U.S. $9.6 trillion to the global economy.

However, in 2020, the pandemic brought the sector to an almost complete standstill, causing a massive 50% drop, representing a severe loss of nearly U.S. $4.5 trillion.

Digitisation has played and will continue to play a pivotal role in Travel & Tourism’s growth and recovery from COVID-19. It is therefore essential for the sector to integrate cyber security and cyber resilience to continue its recovery from the pandemic while supporting its growth in the future.

Hotel Marcel New Haven 1st net-zero hotel in the US

Hotel Marcel New Haven

Hotel Marcel New Haven

April 22, 2022 – The First Anticipated Net-Zero Hotel and First Passive House-Certified Hotel in the US Slated to Open This Spring

Hotel Marcel New Haven

The hotel, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, will soon make history as what is believed will be the first net-zero hotel in the United States. The revolutionary hotel will utilize renewable solar power sources on site to generate the electricity needed for its common areas, restaurant, laundry, meeting rooms and 165 guest rooms and suites. Set to debut this spring, the all-electric hotel is currently accepting reservations for May 19, 2022, and beyond.

Hotel Marcel New Haven will operate independent of fossil fuels, resulting in zero carbon emissions. It is also expected to be the first Passive House-certified hotel in the country, and will be one of fewer than a dozen LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum-certified hotels in the country.

Recycling an entire building for utmost sustainability

The eco-friendly hotel is the result of the innovative vision of lead architect, developer and owner Bruce Redman Becker, FAIA, LEED AP of Becker + Becker. He purchased the building, which originally opened in 1970 as the Armstrong Rubber Company Headquarters, and modernized it with sustainability as the key focus every step of the way.

“We are all responsible for confronting the climate crisis, and that sense of obligation factored into every decision we made in creating Hotel Marcel New Haven,” said Becker. “The opening of this revolutionary hotel, which is giving new life to a New Haven landmark, is a momentous occasion for travelers, the industry and the planet. Guests will be ensured a terrific hotel experience and can relax knowing that both they, and the environment, are being cared for during their stay.”

Listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places, the iconic building, originally designed by Marcel Breuer, is a fitting destination for a new cutting-edge hotel which still nods to the building’s history. Features in the transformation of the building include a power-over-ethernet lighting system that reduces lighting energy use by more than 30%; repurposed building materials throughout, such as light fixtures and carefully restored wood-paneled walls in suites that were once the Armstrong executive offices and conference rooms; and extensive upgrades to enhance interior temperature control and air quality, resulting in the building using significantly less energy per square foot than most hotels.

Becker + Becker, along with partner Dutch East Design, retained many design elements of the original building’s Brutalist architecture with board-formed concrete and granite tile and a focus on functionality, clean lines and geometric forms. Operated by Remington Hotels, Hotel Marcel New Haven restores the former property’s structure and celebrates its storied history, while adding contemporary aspects including 7,000 square feet of meeting and event space with a penthouse courtyard.

Sustainable design meets guest comfort and travel convenience

The green design of Hotel Marcel New Haven also improves guest comfort. Triple-glazed windows provide ultra-efficient insulation to keep guest room temperatures stable, while greatly reducing noise levels. Built-in motorized sheer and blackout window shades provide a better night’s sleep. Guests and travelers on the go also have the convenience of 12 Tesla Superchargers or universal level-two chargers for their electric vehicles.

Eco-friendly food and beverage options for next-level dining

Dining offerings at Hotel Marcel New Haven further demonstrate the hotel’s sustainable experience. The on-site American restaurant and lounge BLDG (pronounced “building”) offers locally-sourced menu items served alongside biodynamic and organic wines. BLDG’s kitchen, as well as the hotel’s laundry room, run on electricity instead of natural gas. The kitchen uses induction, an energy-efficient process that ensures a more precise and even heat. In addition to the restaurant and bar, Hotel Marcel New Haven features a grab-and-go station offering sustainable snacks as well as design-focused gifts and a water filling station.

Unique brand welcomes guests to a sustainable hotel experience

Hotel Marcel New Haven joins the Hilton family under the Tapestry Collection, an upscale portfolio of more than 70 handpicked original hotels. Each Tapestry Collection by Hilton property is one-of-a-kind and features its own unique story. Hotel Marcel New Haven’s story reimagines an iconic historical building, celebrating its rich history while debuting an innovative eco-friendly travel destination.

“Hotel Marcel New Haven is a major milestone for the Tapestry Collection by Hilton brand as the first anticipated net-zero hotel in the U.S.,” said Jenna Hackett, global brand head, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. “Each Tapestry Collection property displays an original style and personality while also encouraging guests to explore local destinations. Hotel Marcel New Haven will connect travelers with the New Haven area while inspiring them to incorporate sustainability into every aspect of their stay. We look forward to celebrating this new and exciting chapter for this unique landmark with our guests.”

Hotel Marcel New Haven also offers a leading example of hotel development that advances Hilton’s Travel with Purpose program, an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy to drive responsible travel and tourism globally. Hilton is focused on paving the way toward a net-zero future and remains committed to partnering with its owners to help minimize carbon footprints and redefine sustainable travel.

Czech Republic travel restrictions eased for travellers

Travellers will no longer need to fill in an arrival form or submit proof of vaccination or a previous infection when returning from abroad. However, it is still recommended travellers to verify the conditions of transport (including proof of infectivity, i.e. test, vaccination, illness) directly with the agreed public transport carrier (plane, bus, train).

Czech Republic travel restrictions

Jan Herget, director at CzechTourism, said: “The Czech Republic has maintained its place in the world’s top ten – between Ireland and Canada. This topic is important in the marketing communication of the destination across segments, both towards the tourists themselves and especially at the level of B2B marketing, when it is necessary to assure our partners from large travel agencies or conference organisers that the Czech Republic is an objectively safe place for their clients.”

No more masks on airplanes, trains after court ruling in the USA

No more masks

No more masks on airplanes and trains in the USA

WASHINGTON/CHICAGO, April 18 (Reuters) – The Biden administration will no longer enforce a U.S. mask mandate on public transportation, after a federal judge in Florida on Monday ruled that the 14-month-old directive was unlawful, overturning a key White House effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Soon after the announcement, all major carriers including American Airlines (AAL.O), United Airlines (UAL.O) and Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), as well as national train line Amtrak relaxed the restrictions effective immediately. read more

Last week, U.S. health officials had extended the mandate to May 3 requiring travelers to wear masks on airplanes, trains, and in taxis, ride-share vehicles or transit hubs, saying they needed time to assess the impact of a recent rise in COVID-19 cases caused by the airborne coronavirus. read more

Industry groups and Republican lawmakers balked and wanted the administration to end the 14-month-old mask mandate permanently.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, an appointee of President Donald Trump, came in a lawsuit filed last year in Tampa, Florida, by a group called the Health Freedom Defense Fund. It follows a string of rulings against Biden administration directives to fight the infectious disease that has killed nearly one million Americans, including vaccine or test mandates for employers.

Judge Mizelle said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had exceeded its authority with the mandate, had not sought public comment and did not adequately explain its decisions.

A U.S. administration official said while the agencies were assessing potential next steps, the court’s decision meant CDC’s public transportation masking order was no longer in effect. The administration could still opt to appeal the order or seek an emergency delay in the order’s enforcement.

“Therefore, TSA will not enforce its Security Directives and Emergency Amendment requiring mask use on public transportation and transportation hubs at this time,” the official said in a statement.

“CDC recommends that people continue to wear masks in indoor public transportation settings.”

The Transportation Security Administration said it will rescind the new Security Directives that were scheduled to take effect on Tuesday.

No more masks on airplanes and trains in the USA:

The ruling comes as COVID-19 infections rise again in the United States, with 36,251 new infections reported on average each day, and 460 daily deaths, based on a seven-day average – the highest number of reported total COVID-19 deaths in the world.

The White House called the ruling “disappointing.”

The CDC first issued a public health order requiring masks in interstate transportation in February 2021. The TSA issued a security directive to enforce the CDC order.

The CDC and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) declined to comment.

United Airlines, American, Delta, Southwest Airlines (LUV.N), JetBlue (JBLU.O) and Alaska Airlines (ALK.N) said masks are now optional on their planes.

“We are relieved to see the U.S. mask mandate lift to facilitate global travel as COVID-19 has transitioned to an ordinary seasonal virus,” Delta said. The World Health Organization warned against comparing the virus to an endemic illness like the flu earlier this year, noting it is evolving too quickly.

No more masks on airplanes and trains in the USA

The move could impact travel demand, which has roared back after a blip caused by the Omicron coronavirus variant. U.S. passenger traffic has been averaging about 89% of the pre-pandemic levels since mid-February, according to TSA data.

With the COVID-19 case count rising again, lifting the mandate could make some passengers wary, while prompting others to fly again.

Only 36% of Americans think it’s time for people to stop using masks and quarantines so that life can get back to normal after COVID-19, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted between Jan. 31 and Feb. 7. However, while a mere 16% of Democrats hold this view, a whopping 60% of Republicans do, according to the poll.

Delta Chief Executive Officer Ed Bastian last week acknowledged the risk, but said the airline still expected its flights to be full.

“It’s a question of individual accountability, personal accountability, making your own decisions rather than the government making decisions for people as to how to stay well,” Bastian told Reuters in an interview.

On Monday, Delta asked its employees to show “understanding and patience” as the unexpected nature of the announcement could result in “inconsistent” enforcement.

Since January 2021, there have been a record 7,060 unruly passenger incidents reported, 70% involving masking rules, according to the FAA. Thousands of passengers have been put on “no-fly” lists for refusing to comply with masking requirements.

Alaska said some passengers will remain banned, even after the mask policy is rescinded.

Pope John Paul II route through Krakow

The greatest citizen of Krakow, Poland resided in Vatican from 1978 to 2005. Before having taken over the Holy See as Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyla had lived in Krakow for four decades – practically through his entire adult life until his assumption of the papacy. Here he spent his formative years as a student and then as a young priest, a theologian and a philosopher, a playwright and a poet. And here he made most of the breathtaking ascent from the position of a humble curate at Krakow’s church of St. Florian’s to university professor to Krakow bishop to cardinal to the Vicar of Christ.

Sightseeing, the most famous place linked with a history and life of the Pope John Paul II: Before having taken over the Holy See as Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyla had lived in Krakow for four decades–practically through his entire adult life until his assumption of the papacy.

Here he spent his formative years as a student and then as a young priest, a theologian and a philosopher, a playwright and a poet.  The visit starts with the Holly Mass in the Archbishop’s Palace which is Wojtyła’s last residence before leaving for the Vatican in 1978. There one can see the famous “papal window”, where John Paul II used to show up to chat and chant with the youth of Krakow during all his visits and where thousands of people lit candles and prayed during his last days.

Next visit in Krakow is of the Francis Basilica located just in front of the palace.

Discovery of the Jagiellonian University where John Pail II studied Polish language, literature and drama. Guided tour of Collegium Maius.

Finally The Main Market Square, the biggest medieval square in Europe and St Mary’s Church – one of the finest Gothic structures in the country  where John Paul II gave sermons and heard confession. And at the end: St. Florian Church in Kraków – in this church during a period from August ’49 to September ’51 Pope John Paul II served as a chaplain to the students of university and to health workers. Dinner and overnight in Krakow.

Continue the Krakow’s route of Pope John Paul II “:the  Wawel Hill  – the monument of Polish history and culture including:. * The Gothic Cathedral – the sanctuary of the nation * The Royal Castle  a long-time center of political and cultural life of the country,  decorated by the best artists from all over Europe like Bartolomeo Berecci etc.

The centerpiece of the art collections is splendid assembly of Flanders tapestries.   The most important is the cathedral where Pope John Paul II said his first Mass in the 12th-century Crypt of St. Leonard’s.  Then Kanonicza street where Father Wojtyla resided at 19 Kanonicza street from 1951 till 1958, when he became bishop;  Now both those houses are turned into the Archdiocese Museum which exhibits the church art. Walk in the footsteps of Aphrodite through Paphos

Walk in the footsteps of Aphrodite through Paphos

Walk in the footsteps of Aphrodite through Paphos

Wherever one treads in Paphos one comes across a glorious history, which dates back thousands of years, when the cult of goddess Aphrodite flourished in this beautiful part of the world attracting many visitors from inland and abroad. Still under the spell of her Beauty-goddess, the area retaining her magic has remained intact by time. It seduces its visitor with its majestic landscape, lovely coastline, historical treasures and delightful villages where tradition is still a way of life!

Walk in the footsteps of Aphrodite through Paphos

The Birthplace of Aphrodite is one of the most beautiful beaches near the city of Pafos, where locals can enjoy swimming with their families. In the water one can see the enormous rock where legend says Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, was born from the ocean.

In the myth of Aphrodite’s birth, the beautiful Goddess of Love emerges naked from the water around Cyprus. She had just been created from the foam of the sea caused by Cronus castrating his father Uranus and throwing his genitals into the water. Although Aphrodite had originally begun drifting towards the Greek island of Cythera, the wind blew her towards her spiritual home near Pafos.

According to local legend, it was on this particular beach – near the temple built at Palaipafos (Old Pafos) to worship her, as early as the Bronze Age, that she arrived, and this is why it is now known as the Birthplace of Aphrodite.

This stretch is one of the most beautiful along the southwestern part of Cyprus, with the coastline meandering along, creating coves and points. From the pebbly beach at the Birthplace of Aphrodite, you can see dramatic white cliffs in the distance. Closer to the shore, large rocks jut out from the water.

One of these rocks has been named Aphrodite Rock – partly because of the foam that is being formed at its base, which brings in mind the story of the deity’s birth. A local story is that anyone who swims around the rock will be blessed with eternal beauty.

Our search will first take us to the ancient Kingdom of Kourion, which is placed on one of the most spectacular sites on the island, with extensive archaeological ruins including well-preserved mosaics. Its Greco-Roman amphitheatre, built in the 2nd century BC, is famous for its vistas of the Mediterranean Sea.

The kingdom is also renowned for its preserved mosaic floors in the House of Eustolios, the House of Achilles and the House of the Gladiators.

Upon arrival in Paphos, we will visit the famous Mosaics of the Roman period, dating from around the 3rd century AD. These are situated in four main houses: the House of Aion, House of Dionysos, House of Orpheus and House of Theseus. They include many attention-grabbing geometrical decorations and draw inspiration from Greek mythological scenes.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant overlooking the Castle of Paphos.

We will then continue towards Yeroskipou, just outside Paphos; where the Ayia Paraskevi church stands. Built in the 9th century AD, its 5 domes are decorated with beautiful frescoes. While in Yeroskipou, guests will have the opportunity to visit a traditional Loukoumi factory and taste this local delicacy.

On the way back to Limassol, our guests can enjoy a sunset cocktail, by Aphrodite’s rock, which according to mythology is the birthplace of the Goddess of Beauty and Love. Our guests, will be inspired by this amazing scenery and allow Aphrodite to be their hostess throughout this journey of senses, colours and experiences in beautiful Cyprus. (Dance act).

In the afternoon return back to the hotel.

Meliá Hotels Vietnam

Meliá Hotels Vietnam expands with Vinpearl partnership

Meliá Hotels Vietnam expands with Vinpearl partnership

April 19, 2022 – Burgeoning hotel group, Meliá Hotels International, is set to become one of the largest international hotel brands in Vietnam through a new collaboration with the country’s largest domestic hotel owner, Vinpearl.

Meliá Hotels Vietnam

Under the agreement, the leading Spanish hotel group will take over the management of 12 hotels and resorts already opened and in operation, in top destinations across the nation.

“We believe in creating strong and strategic regional partnerships with companies that have a deep connection to the locations they serve,” said Gabriel Escarrer, Vice Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International. “The Vinpearl properties and destinations at the heart of this agreement are a wonderful complement to the roots we’ve already established in Vietnam.”

Meliá’s latest move will make it the second-largest hotel group in Vietnam in terms of the number of rooms. The rapidly expanding company first entered Vietnam back in 1999 with the opening of Meliá Hanoi. They currently have six properties in operation with six hotels in the pipeline in popular tourist hotspots throughout the country. This partnership will increase Meliá’s room count in Vietnam to 8,000, boosting their numbers to 24 hotels and resorts, with 8 hotels under operation and 16 more on the way.

In addition to Meliá Hotels and Resorts, the existing portfolio includes two other brands, Sol by Meliá and INNSiDE by Meliá. In this new arrangement with Vinpearl, the properties will be known as Meliá Vinpearl hotels in order to emphasize the unique personality and strength of this partnership.

“Collaborating with international partners in running our properties will effectively facilitate Vinpearl in joining world-famous hotel networks and contribute to raising the bar for Vietnamese tourism,” said Mr Thai Thanh Nhat Quang, CEO of Vinpearl Hotel. “Through this cooperation, Vinpearl and Meliá Hotels International also expect to deliver a variety of high-class hotel service experiences to millions of domestic and international tourists.”

The global hotel brand has built a portfolio of 380 hotels in more than 40 countries since its founding in Palma De Mallorca in 1956. In Southeast Asia, Meliá currently operates 20 properties and has a pipeline of 20 hotels in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

“We see a huge potential for growth in Vietnam, particularly in the luxury hospitality industry,” said Ignacio Martin, Managing Director Southeast Asia at Melia Hotels International. “While COVID-19 may have brought international travel to a standstill, we are confident that the country will see growth in tourism in the future, as well as a rise in domestic travel.”

The 12 five-star Meliá Vinpearl properties will complement Meliá’s existing portfolio, by expanding into new locations. The first hotel to come into the fold was Vinpearl Quang Binh. The property is now under Meliá management and will be rebranded as Meliá Vinpearl Quang Binh in March 2022. The coastal location catapulted to fame several years back when the world’s largest cave was discovered in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. Despite this magnet, the area has been relatively untouched by international hotel brands.

Vinpearl Hotel Hue is also now under Meliá management and will be unveiled as Meliá Vinpearl Hotel Hue in May 2022. The hotel holds a prime position in Vietnam’s former imperial capital city, Hue, with views over the popular destination’s fabled Perfume River.

The other hotels under this strategic alliance include sites such as Thanh Hoa and Hai Phong near the country’s capital Hanoi; Nghe An and Ha Tinh along the North Central Coast, and Tay Ninh in the south. The group will expand under Meliá Vinpearl into locations where Meliá already has properties, such as Danang, as well as cultivating the new ground in destinations where the group currently has no presence.

The remaining 10 properties are scheduled to complete their migration into the new Melia Vinpearl portfolio under the management of Meliá Hotels International group during the first half of 2022.

Long renowned for its Spanish hospitality, Meliá intends to inculcate the same spirit of warmth and passion in every one of its Vinpearl properties. “At Meliá we prioritize each guest’s wellbeing and, through our personalized service approach, develop authentic connections with all who stay,” said Martin. “This is our way and what we will bring to each Melia Vinpearl property.”

At the same time, the group plans to elevate sustainability as a priority in each hotel. Meliá Hotels International was recently named the most sustainable hotel brand in Europe and Spain for the third consecutive year by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment, the most comprehensive assessment in the world.

Conrad Hotels & Resorts Italy

Conrad Hotels Resorts Italy – Debuts on the Sardinian Coast

Conrad Hotels Resorts Italy – Debuts on the Sardinian Coast

April 19, 2022 – Hilton today celebrates the opening of the highly-anticipated Conrad Chia Laguna Sardinia, marking the luxury brand’s debut in Italy. A prime location on Sardinia’s pristine coastline, the hotel overlooks Chia Bay and is nestled between the golden sands of both Monte Cogoni Beach and Dune di Campana Beach. The 107-room resort offers a secluded retreat for travelers seeking total ease and relaxation along with exclusive guest amenities and privileged access to all that the larger Chia Laguna Resort has to offer. Conrad Chia Laguna Sardinia not only marks the brand’s inaugural opening in Italy but also represents Conrad’s expanding global portfolio of distinctive hotels and resorts.

Conrad Hotels Resorts Italy

Simon Vincent, executive vice president and president, EMEA, Hilton, said, “Conrad Chia Laguna Sardinia is a stunning addition to our luxury portfolio in Europe – and Hilton’s third hotel on the island. Sardinia’s natural beauty makes it a desirable destination for discerning luxury travellers, and we’re thrilled to partner with Italian Hospitality Collection once again to introduce the hotel to Hilton’s guests from around the world. With more than 10 new hotels poised to join our Italian portfolio this year in locations including Rome, Padua and Venice, we continue to see considerable growth momentum in Italy, demonstrating the strength and resilience of Hilton’s brands in a dynamic market.”

Immersed in Nature
Perched on the southern-most tip of the Mediterranean island, the resort is surrounded by awe-inspiring natural beauty. Sand dunes, coastal flora and fauna and pink flamingos give way to both Monte Cogoni and Dune di Campana, renowned as Italy’s most beautiful beaches and found on either side of the resort. These spectacular vistas decorated with hues of natural green and blue are visible from every corner of the property – with rooms, suites, restaurants and pools boasting panoramic views across the iconic bay and lagoon. Chia is a protected habitat to wildlife and is home to countless species as well as wild herbs such as mint, rosemary and thyme which often fill the coastal air with their favourable scent.

Bringing the Outside In
The surrounding natural beauty is reflected in the property’s interior thanks to a unique design concept by Studio Marco Piva – Milanese masters of hospitality design. Inspiration comes from the hotel’s elevated coastal location above the bay with natural materials and neutral tones featured throughout resulting in a harmonious blend of elegance and Mediterranean simplicity. The approach combines contemporary design with local materials such as Sardinian “Biancone di Orosei” marble, a calcareous rock derived from ancient coral and fossils that has a subtle sandy hue. These locally sourced rocks were used to create terraces, seamlessly blending the resort into its surroundings. The hotel lobby features elements of the Sardinian culture, inviting guests to fully experience the location’s cultural background with details such as wall coverings of traditional Sardinian fabrics and furniture decorated with ropes, representing the destination’s nautical roots.

Authentic Flavours to Suit All Tastes
Conrad Hotels Resorts Italy offers something for families and couples alike, with the guest rooms divided into two areas dedicated to each type of guest, featuring dedicated swimming pools, private gardens and pathways alongside two restaurants to suit every palette. La Terrazza serves a menu of Mediterranean and international cuisine in an interactive setting where guests can observe the cooking process alongside panoramic views from the al fresco terrace. Sa Mesa – set in an olive grove – features local specialities with a contemporary twist, offering foodies an authentic experience under the twinkling Mediterranean night sky.

The on-site Conrad Spa serves as calm haven with an extensive treatment menu and rooftop solarium – where breath-taking views overlooking the entire resort and surrounding landscapes can be enjoyed from a series of pools.

Dino Michael, senior vice president and global category head, Hilton luxury brands said, “We’re thrilled to introduce Conrad Hotels & Resorts in Italy as the latest marquee opening for the brand following notable openings in Shanghai and Tulum early this year. Located in a destination famous for its turquoise coastline and picturesque mountainous views, Conrad Chia Laguna Sardinia will provide our highly discerning guests with authentic, impactful experiences through Conrad’s renowned purposeful and passionate service.”

Marcello Cicalò, group director of operations, Italian Hospitality Collection, said, “We are proud to be taking our partnership with Hilton to the next level, having begun last year with the launch of Baia di Chia Resort Sardinia, Curio Collection by Hilton. Conrad Chia Laguna Sardinia will offer exclusive, superlative experiences in a unique location brimming with history and culture, set in the magnificent natural surroundings of southern Sardinia. Our partnership with Hilton is a real boost, increasing the international profile of our resort and Sardinia as a travel destination, and providing a real opportunity to relaunch tourism on the entire island.”

Conrad Hotels Resorts Italy is part of Hilton Honors, the award-winning guest loyalty program for Hilton’s 18 distinct hotel brands. Members who book directly have access to instant benefits, including a flexible payment slider that allows members to choose nearly any combination of Points and money to book a stay, an exclusive member discount, free standard Wi-Fi and the Hilton Honors mobile app.

Singapore joins the Global Destination Sustainability-Index

Singapore joins the Global Destination Sustainability-Index

Singapore joins the Global Destination Sustainability-Index

April 19, 2022-  Singapore joins the Global Destination Sustainability-Index (GDS-Index) with the support of Singapore Tourism Board (STB), building the country’s current sustainability efforts under Singapore Green Plan 2030 (SGP2030) – a nationwide movement to advance the city’s agenda on sustainable development.

This significant move sees the Southeast Asian country cementing its position as a sustainability performance improver and changemaker, alongside destinations in the region such as Bangkok and Sarawak. Other cities participating in the GDS-Index include Gothenburg, Copenhagen, and Glasgow.

The GDS-Index is a sustainability benchmarking and improvement programme for destinations around the world. It is used to assess current social and environmental performance of a destination annually, and, in turn, drive improved performance. The GDS-Index is a collaborative partnership between ICCA, ICCA’s Scandinavian Chapter, IMEX, ECM, and MCI Group.

Singapore joins the Global Destination Sustainability-Index

Notable sustainability performance

Building on Singapore’s identity as a City in Nature, Singapore’s participation in the GDS-Index is aligned with the vision and targets of SGP2030, which has charted Singapore’s ambitions and targets over the next 10 years, strengthening Singapore’s commitments under the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and Paris Agreement. The commitment supports Singapore to be a more sustainable urban destination and positions it to achieve its long-term net zero emissions aspiration as soon as viable.

Singapore joins the Global Destination Sustainability-Index:

STB became a Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) member in October 2021 and strongly supports local tourism businesses in their sustainability journey.

Singapore joins the Global Destination Sustainability-Index: Some of Singapore’s sustainability initiatives in tourism:

·       In March 2022, STB and Singapore Hotel Association announced the launch of the Hotel Sustainability Roadmap, which sets out clear targets and strategies for Singapore hotels to adopt in their sustainability journey. The roadmap also lays out strategies and related initiatives that harness technology and innovation to help hotels achieve these targets. These include (but are not limited to):

  • Tapping on STB funds such as the Business Improvement Fund to support sustainability initiatives that improve competitiveness and productivity, which may put hotels in a better stead to seek sustainability certification subsequently.
  • Partnering innovative tech providers to co-develop sustainability-related industry pilots through Tcube programmes such as the Singapore Tourism Accelerator by STB.
  • Developing innovative and best-in-class sustainable guest experiences with STB’s support via Experience Step-Up Fund.

Singapore joins the Global Destination Sustainability-Index

·       The Singapore Tourism Accelerator programme has also helped to match good tech and sustainability solutions with tourism businesses. For example, local start-up Lumitics helped Millennium & Copthorne International Limited reduce food waste and lower costs through their solution which combines AI, data analytics and image recognition software.

·       Resorts World Sentosa continues to integrate sustainable practices in its operations, invest in innovative sustainable solutions, and engages their guests and partners through education and outreach programmes to promote environmental conservation.

·       Marina Bay Sands has imbued sustainability into the heart of its experiences, and recognises that it contributes to their top line. Since 2012, MBS has reduced its carbon footprint by over 30% through investments in an Intelligent Building Management System, Building AI data analytics, and other carbon tech efficiency measures.

·       Mandai Wildlife Group introduced its Mandai Environmental Sustainability Strategy and green procurement roadmap; while Sentosa Development Corporation launched a sustainability roadmap for Sentosa to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and become a globally recognised, certified sustainable tourism destination.

“Sustainability is a key priority for Singapore tourism because it is vital to our future and travellers are become increasingly aware of the impact of their consumption,” says Keith Tan, Chief Executive of STB. “Becoming a leading sustainable urban destination requires a long-term commitment from both the government and industry. That is why Singapore’s participation in the GDS-Index is important, as it focuses our collective efforts and helps us track our progress as a City in Nature, where large experiences come with small footprints.”

“A warm welcome to this committed destination taking further sustainability steps to help it thrive,” says Global Destination Sustainability Movement’s Chief Changemaker, Guy Bigwood. “We are excited to see some green best practices coming out of this city-state, which has used its confined boundaries to its advantage by creating innovative sustainable solutions for the island nation. We also see the power of community growing with each of its interlinked effort towards greater regenerative destination management, and celebrate the positive impacts that its strategic, sustained change has for all.”
