The World’s Longest Treetop Walkway Lets You Stroll Almost a Full Mile in a Forest Canopy in Switzerland

Travel news from around the world

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Switzerland’s natural beauty, from scenic train rides to epic hikes and more. As of this summer, that list got a little bit longer, thanks to the grand opening of Senda dil Dragun, the longest treetop walkway in the world.

Stretching 1.5 kilometers (slightly less than a mile), Senda dil Dragun connects the villages of Laax Murschetg and Laax Dorf in southeast Switzerland, with an elevated trail that soars above the forest floor. Senda dil Dragun, which appropriately translates to “Way of the Dragon,” opened to the public on July 11 and has since welcomed over 45,000 visitors.

Throughout the walkway, guests will find different ways to enhance their experience, all while admiring the trees at eye level. This includes four platforms with seating and informational displays describing the plants, trees, and animals that can be found in the forest. If the thrill of walking through the forest canopy isn’t enough, younger visitors can get an added dose of adrenaline on the spiral slide, which is built into the tower in Murschetg.

Starting Oct. 11, 2021, guests will also be able to complement their visit to Senda dil Dragun with a digital experience. Using a rented tablet at five designated areas throughout the walkway, visitors will enter the world of augmented reality (AR) and access information about the regional animal and plant life, geology, agriculture, and human settlement.

And while this walkway may seem like a warm-weather activity, organizers already have plans to turn Senda dil Dragun into a winter wonderland this upcoming holiday season. Visitors can also look forward to music, storytelling, and children’s character appearances along the path.

ATTA survey highlights green shoots of recovery

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Bookings and enquiries about travel to Southern and East Africa remained strong in July, although postponements still dominated as the highest category of ‘enquiries’.

This is according to the latest African Travel & Tourism Association (ATTA) Snapshot Survey. Throughout 2021, ATTA has been taking a ‘snapshot’ at the end of each month from the perspective of accommodation providers, DMCs, tour operators and agents and private guides.

The survey provides an indication of what is happening within the broader African travel and tourism industry and focuses on, among others: Who is actually travelling each month? How are they booking? Where are they enquiring to go to? What are the lead times of bookings?

The survey is only sent to those within the ATTA membership and its greater industry network, spanning thousands of companies around the globe.

Here is the final summary of the report.

Arrivals

  • 87% of accommodation respondents were open, the highest percentage in 2021, whilst the majority occupancy levels remained low at 20-40%.
  • Fewer respondents had arrivals from international and trade channels, with local direct bookings remaining essential for occupancy.
  • DMCs experienced the highest percentage of travellers due to travel in July, who actually travelled (24%). This is the highest percentage all year and a marked increase from April (8%). July was the month with the lowest percentage (13%) of DMC respondents who indicated they had had no travellers to date, a huge decrease compared with February (52%).
  • The domestic market retained its strength in arrivals while international direct and trade channel arrivals reduced from June.
  • Nationalities of Arrivals: Domestic remains highest in number, Chile was mentioned for the first time and the US, Germany and France were the top international nationalities arriving.

Postponements

  • Postponements remained the highest category of ‘enquiries’ in July (46% of buyer respondents, 39% DMCs and 30% of suppliers), but expectation of these to travel are low. In contrast, confidence in the ability to travel is growing according to tour operator respondents (38% responding confident/confident but with all medical and insurance details).

Staffing

  • July showed an overall increase in people back at work, the highest of 2021.

 Enquiries and bookings

  • Enquiries remain strong across all parts of the chain.
  • 94% of suppliers, 90% of DMCs, 69% of buyers (Note, the buyers were specifically asked about enquiries to Africa as many sell outside of the continent.)
  • Tour operator conversion rates increased for the first time in 2021 with 27% of respondents converting 20-40% of enquiries.
  • USA, Germany and the UK provided the most enquiries to buyers and DMCs in July. Whilst the US, Germany and domestic markets provided the most enquiries to accommodation suppliers. This translated into bookings, with the exception of the UK.
  • DMC and tour operator pipelines hold a large percentage of postponements from 2020.

 Lead times

  • Short-term bookings remain most prevalent (81% of suppliers receiving bookings with departures up to two months in advance and 47% of buyer respondents receiving bookings with departures up to four months). A notable comment is that this is for both domestic and international as clients react to the changing travel restrictions.
  • Other individual comments outline that the appetite for bookings six to 12 months in advance is coming.

NETFLIX series boost city tourism in France

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

TV series set in France such as ‘Emily in Paris’, ‘Lupin’ or ‘Marseille’ boost city tourism at the locations. The French news magazine ‘L’Express’ reported that viewers, especially from abroad, are attracted to the series’ prominent locations. In the capital, it was the locations of the clichéd series ‘Emily in Paris’ where tourists took selfies in masses.

A restaurant much frequented by the protagonist has put a ‘Menu Emily’ on the menu. A bookstore often present in the series is also happy about the new customers. And their interest is not going to wane anytime soon:

Meanwhile, the crook series ‘Lupin’ has brought an unexpected increase in visitors to the seaside resort of Étretat in Normandy, with its chalk cliffs, since an important plot line was set there in the second season. Inquiries from journalists and viewers from abroad have been piling up, the spokesman for the local tourism office, told Éric Baudet. “Even if we can’t quantify it, the impact of Netflix on Étretat cannot be denied.” Environmentalists, meanwhile, warn that the chalk cliffs and their surroundings are being overburdened by the many visitors.

The port city is still benefiting from the Netflix series ‘Marseille’, which was launched in 2016 and 2017, according to ‘L’Express’. Even if the share of the series in the city tourism boom cannot be put into figures, quite a few foreign guests mention the series, said the director of the Tourism and Convention Bureau, Maxime Tissot. He added that there was also an additional positive side effect: Marseille had also come into focus for other film and TV productions – the city hosted 441 filming days in 2019.

The fact that films can boost tourism is also proven by a 2018 study conducted by the French Center for Film and Moving Image (CNF). According to the study, 74 percent of tourists who had seen a film or series shot in France said that it had made them want to travel to the country.

James Rees, ICCA President: “ICCA is committed to driving sustainable development within the meetings industry and our global membership. We are proud to be a part of such an initiative which is becoming more important than ever and through collaborative effort with our JMIC partners, we look forward to playing a very active role in developing and implementing sustainable event strategies that are of the highest standards.”

Zimbabwe to complete new terminal at main airport in June 2022

Travel news from around the world

The efficiency of passenger flow at Zimbabwe’s Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport is set to improve significantly thanks to a new terminal building currently under construction.

According to a statement from the presidency, refurbishment of the current terminal will begin once the new facility is completed, after which the two facilities will be merged. When complete, the airport will handle six million passengers annually.

The project will cost $153 million and is expected to be completed by 2023.

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa toured the facility on Wednesday and expressed his satisfaction with the quality of work and the progress so far.

“As time has passed, we realized we needed something better, that has international appeal and facilities that you get elsewhere should also be available here,” Mnangagwa said.

“We are happy that this airport, after completion, will match any other airport in the world in terms of facilities and the design to attract airlines coming here, as well as our own people coming here to watch as the planes arrive and have a good time.”

Zimbabwe’s aviation industry has been on the up in recent months after a turbulent period exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The national carrier Air Zimbabwe resumed domestic and regional flights in June having previously suspended all flights for most of 2020 due to operational challenges and restrictions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last month, Qatar Airways, one of the world’s leading airlines, made its inaugural flight to Zimbabwe touching down in Harare with the state-owned Gulf carrier operating three weekly scheduled flights to more than 140 destinations across its network.

Based on demand, Norwegian has opened new routes to destinations in Europe this Autumn. From Bergen passengers can fly direct to Berlin, Krakow, Malaga, Alicante, Antalya, Chania, Copenhagen and London. From Ålesund there is a now direct route to Alicante.

“We have reopened several routes that have been suspended since the pandemic started. It is now possible again to travel to several cities in Europe, such as Pisa, Edinburgh, Munich, Prague and Vienna. We know that the pandemic can still affect people’s ability to travel, however, we will continue to adapt our network to the positive trend in passenger demand,” continued Geir Karlsen.

Norwegian had an average of 38 aircraft in operation in August. A total of 99.8 per cent of the planned flights were operated in August, of which 91.9 per cent departed on time.

Norwegian’s traffic figures for August show a continued increase in the number of passengers. The number of future bookings has also continued to increase in line with Norwegian’s expanding route network as more people are fully vaccinated and EU / EEA countries accept international COVID certificates for travel.

Due to increased demand, Norwegian has further expanded the autumn season route offering.

“We are pleased with the positive increase in passenger numbers and demand. Everybody at Norwegian has worked incredibly hard to achieve these results and we will continue to deliver good customer experiences while running our business as efficiently as possible”. Said Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian.

In August, Norwegian carried 790 220 passengers, one and a half times more than at the same time last year. Compared with August 2020, the total capacity (ASK) has increased by 129 per cent and passenger traffic (RPK) up 168 per cent. Furthermore, the load factor in August was 72.6 per cent, an increase of 10 percentage points compared with last year.

Portugal lifts travel ban on tourists from Brazil

Travel news from around the world

Portugal said on Wednesday it would allow entry for tourists from Brazil, nearly 18 months after it imposed a ban on non-essential travel from the Portuguese-speaking South American nation to stem the spread of coronavirus.

Although Brazilians, who make up Portugal’s biggest expatriate community, were allowed access for reasons such as work, family or health, the lifting of the tourism ban has been long-awaited.

Portugal is now open to tourists from the European Union who present the bloc’s digital COVID-19 certificate, as well as the United States, from where visitors must show a negative test result on arrival.

Travellers from Brazil now no longer need to quarantine but must provide a negative COVID-19 test. The same rule applies to visitors from Britain, according to the government.

Taking stock of Marriott’s all-inclusive strategy

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Mexico:

All-inclusive resorts have been the bread and butter of Mexico’s travel industry for quite some time. So when Marriott International unveiled a plan to expand into the sector in 2019, many believed that it was a venture that was a long-time coming.

With the recent opening of the Delta Hotels by Marriott, Riviera Nayarit, I checked in with the brand and experts to see what else we can expect to see from Marriott’s all-inclusive division in Mexico and beyond.

“Our new all-inclusive resort platform is a natural progression for Marriott International,” said Alex Fiz, managing director, all-inclusive, Marriott International Caribbean & Latin America. “We announced the signing of the first Delta by Marriott all-inclusive resort in 2019 and opened the hotel at the beginning of August, as planned. We continue to see strong opportunities for quality brand experiences in the Caribbean and Latin America, and especially conversion opportunities, which are a strong proposition for savvy investors.”

The original all-inclusive plan

As part of the initial announcement, Marriott said that it would increase its all-inclusive footprint under its brands, including Ritz-Carlton, Luxury Collection, Marriott, Westin, W, Autograph Collection and Delta. In Mexico, the projected openings include the new Delta Hotels by Marriott as well as four resorts that will be part of a 220-acre development on the Riviera Nayarit. These include a 240-room Ritz-Carlton, a 400-room Westin, a 300-room Autograph Collection resort and a 500-room Marriott.

The Delta Hotels by Marriott, Riviera Nayarit that just opened is a conversion property that was once the Grand Matlali Hills Resort in the hills near La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. It has 117 guestrooms, all with private balconies, as well as two restaurants and four pop-up venues, two swimming pools, a fitness center, a spa and a beach club with shuttle service.

“Despite the current business climate, we have been able to maintain planned hotel openings in the region and signed several new deals, such as the long-term agreement with Blue Diamond Resorts, Sunwing Travel Group’s hotel division,” Fiz said. “Through this agreement, the All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy collection now features boutique resort properties throughout the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico.”

Marriott added 19 resorts, totaling around 7,000 rooms across six destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico. Most of the properties are expected to be converted into Marriott’s Autograph Collection brand. The portfolio is projected to increase by more than 50 percent by 2025.

What’s next in the pipeline?

The four resorts that will be part of the 220-acre development are still on track to open by 2025. Additional signed pipeline countries include Brazil, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico.

“Marriott International plans to further expand its all-inclusive portfolio in popular leisure destinations worldwide with a mix of newbuild properties and conversions of existing resorts, including properties currently in the Marriott International portfolio,” Fiz said. “The new platform will provide the company’s roughly 150 million Marriott Bonvoy members the option to earn and redeem points for this pay-one-price concept. Marriott expects to expand its all-inclusive portfolio to over 30 properties by 2025.”

Jennifer Dohrmann-Alpert, senior hospitality advisor at HKS, said, “Marriott saw the opportunity for all-inclusive expansion early with their acquisition of the Elegant Hotels portfolio in 2019. They have been steadily increasing their portfolio of all-inclusive properties across Mexico and the Caribbean since then and are well positioned to serve their Bonvoy members across markets and hotel categories with their growing portfolio.”

Communicating with advisors

Advisors, however, would like to hear a little bit more from Marriott about their new all-inclusive endeavors. In a market like Mexico, where all-inclusives are a mainstay, the more information advisors have the better. The market may seem oversaturated, but heads continue to fill beds, so the demand is there.

“There hasn’t been a lot of communication from Marriott from the all-inclusive segment,” said Geoff Millar, co-owner of Ultimate All-Inclusive Travel. “I think they’re still putting together their plan. Marketing all-inclusive resorts is a whole different animal than what they’re used to.”

Millar told Travel Weekly that Marriott recently sent out a questionnaire asking advisors and experts to give them recommendations for how to set up their all-inclusive organization and run the all-inclusive resorts.

“I think they’re doing it slowly because marketing all-inclusive resorts is a different animal,” he said. “They’re still kind of feeling their way about how to set up an organization to do that.”

Communication with advisors will be crucial in the coming years. Dohrmann-Alpert predicts that the trend of brands securing all-inclusive market share will continue for the next two to three years, so advisors will need all the information from the different hotel companies in order to best match their clients to all-inclusive resorts.

“With Hyatt Hotels’ recent announcement that they are acquiring Apple Leisure Group and their 100 global all-inclusive properties, brands are moving quickly to secure market share in this growing space,” said Dohrmann-Alpert. “Brand loyalty customers have been asking for more all-inclusive options, and brands are now responding via acquisitions and the launch of new products.”

Etihad anticipating surge in demand as Abu Dhabi opens to fully vaccinated travellers
September 2, 2021

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, is prepared for a boost in travel to and from Abu Dhabi following the government’s announcement to remove the quarantine requirement for all vaccinated travellers arriving from abroad.

Fully vaccinated travellers (with vaccines approved by the World Health Organization) can arrive from all international destinations without the need to quarantine. All travellers will require a PCR test within 48 hours of departure, a test on arrival and retesting on select days depending on the country they have travelled from. Unvaccinated travellers, however, should follow the rules according to the destination they are arriving from.

Tony Douglas, Group Chief Executive Officer, Etihad, commented: “The news is perfectly timed to begin welcoming the world back to Abu Dhabi. We expect a huge surge in demand from tourists and visiting friends and relatives from around the world. This will also give UAE residents greater flexibility and peace of mind when travelling globally.

“The emirate has delivered one of the world’s best public health programmes to protect the population with an extremely high vaccination rate, and smart technologically-driven solutions such as the Al Hosn app to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

“This is a huge step forward as the UAE prepares to host the EXPO 2020, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and many more global events over the coming months.

“Etihad is currently operating to 65 passenger destinations with one of the world’s youngest and most sustainable fleets. We look forward to welcoming our guests to Abu Dhabi with Etihad to enjoy this world-class destination – an emirate and capital city we’re so proud to call our home.”

Flying with Etihad is supported by the Etihad Wellness programme which has been introduced to help limit the spread of COVID-19. Etihad was the first airline in the world to fully vaccinate its crew on board. Etihad also requires 100% of its passengers to show a negative PCR test before boarding to protect the inflight environment, which is now recognised to be one of the best in the world.

The airline has implemented an extensive sanitisation and wellness programme and is practising the highest standards of hygiene at every part of the customer journey. This includes catering, aircraft and cabin deep-cleaning, check-in, health screening, boarding, inflight, crew interaction, meal service, disembarkation and ground transportation, among others.

More information on the stringent measures being taken by Etihad to provide a healthy and hygienic travel experience is available at etihad.com/wellness. As a precautionary measure, guests travelling on Etihad Airways flights are required to wear a face mask throughout their journey.

Those wishing to book with Etihad are advised to visit etihad.com to view their options and to remain informed of the appropriate entry requirements for Abu Dhabi. Flights are also available for booking through the mobile app, by calling the Etihad contact centre on +971 600 555 666 (UAE), or through a local or online travel agency.

Botswana’s luxury airline: Fly Okavango set to launch in November

blank

Travel news from around the world

Botswana:

The launch of an airline flying overseas visitors directly to the Okavango Delta is expected to have a positive impact on Botswana’s tourism sector.

Botswana will soon have a new charter airline that aims to bring overseas tourists back to the country, to enjoy its bespoke lodges and unspoiled tourism offering. Fly Okavango is expected to take to the skies in the next two months.

Botswana’s national airline flies to destinations within that country as well as to Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa.  Air Botswana does not operate a major international route network that facilitates the arrival of overseas tourists.

Botswana has always relied on major international airports in neighbouring countries including South Africa and Namibia as gateways for international tourists who arrive in destinations such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Windhoek before travelling onward to Botswana.

South Africa has been cut off by several countries and international airlines for extended periods during the last year, as a result of flight and travel bans imposed due to the presence of the Beta variant.

These flight and travel bans have had a major impact on businesses in South Africa’s tourism and hospitality sectors which have caused many local businesses to close their doors for good, seek out new customer bases, or to mothball their operations.

The restrictions placed on South Africa have also impacted neighbouring countries including Botswana and Zimbabwe because international visitors heading for those countries often fly into or out of South Africa, and may even have included locations in South Africa as part of their trips.

The landlocked country which has not escaped the global slump in tourism is eager to facilitate the return of tourists by offering more convenient and Covid-19 safe travel options to tourists. Botswana’s tourism offerings are generally enjoyed by high spend tourists from parts of Europe and the United States of America.

To facilitate the return of these international tourists to Botswana, various businesses in Botswana’s tourism and hospitality sectors have come to the table to find solutions. By offering direct flights between Europe and the USA to Maun, the Okavango Delta is set to see more tourists arriving there.

Hospitality and tourism providers in Botswana have shown a keen interest in the launch of Fly Okavango’s direct flights from the USA and UK. According to Fly Okavango’s Founder Martin Steer, the airline’s flights have gathered strong interest from lodge and hotel groups in Botswana including Belmond, Great Plains, Natural Selection and Red Carnation – all of whom will benefit from increased numbers of tourists.

FLY OKAVANGO’S ROUTES

Flights are expected to start in November, using a Boeing 767-300 and an Airbus A 340-500. From the United States, flights will depart from Palm Beach International Airport in Florida, and flights from Europe will depart from Munich in Germany.

Initially, the airline will operate direct charter flights from the United States and Germany to Maun (the gateway to Botswana’s Okavango Delta) on set dates.  There are also plans to operate flights from London to Maun but these will not take effect while Botswana remains on the UK’s red list.

SAFE AND SUPERIOR SERVICES

Fly Okavango’s aircraft will offer superior comfort and exceptional health and safety standards through luxury aircraft seating arrangements that allow maximum spacing between passengers – with only 96 and 120 first-class lie-flat seats on each aircraft, depending on the route.

Fly Okavango will cater to travellers visiting the Okavango Delta on offer fully inclusive tour packages. The airline has been endorsed by Botswana Tourism. Fly Okavango says it intends to add Victoria Falls and Cape Town to its destinations in 2022.

Thailand:

The Slate, a beachfront resort in PhuketThailand, is getting ready to host business meetings once again with a series of MICE packages. Following 18 months of travel restrictions, the resort in the secluded northwest coast foresees plenty of pent-up demand for in-person corporate functions.

To enable the safe restart of domestic and international events, The Slate has crafted a pair of packages that include plenty of added value for companies to maximize their MICE budget. As health and safety of associates remain a top priority for organizations, the new packages also aim to take every precaution to take care of the delegates.

The “Meet Again @ The Slate” package will allow businesses to benefit from reconfigured venues that strike a balance between personal connections and physical space, including the use of larger areas for smaller groups and one-way systems to ensure social distancing. All attendees will be subject to temperature checks, advanced sanitation procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE), and all facilities will undergo intensive deep cleaning.

Half-day and full-day meeting packages are available, including private roundtrip airport transfers, function room rentals, priority check-in, a dedicated hospitality desk, a 30-minute cocktail reception upon arrival, daily breakfast, coffee breaks, a conference lunch, late check-out, a one-hour outdoor team activity and a group photo, which will be framed and presented to each guest as a turndown gift. Guests will also be offered a choice of yoga and meditation breaks and will be able to plant herbs in the resort’s organic garden. Every attendee will get 20 percent discounts at the Coqoon Spa and the KRU Precision Wellness, the onsite healthcare facility.

Priced at $49 per person for a half-day meeting package and $55 for a full-day package, this offer is valid for bookings made until April 30, 2022 and events staged by October 31, 2022, for groups of 30 to 50 guests. One VIP will also be treated to a complimentary upgrade to a Private Pool Suite.

Alternatively, the “Healthy Meeting @ The Slate” package lets event planners create experiences inspired by the natural, transformative elements of Nai Yang Beach. This four-day package includes luxurious accommodations (starting from a Pearl Bed Suite), daily breakfast with fresh juice, smoothies and nutrient-packed dishes, two full-day meeting packages with morning and afternoon breaks, a specially prepared conference lunch with options for vegans and vegetarians, and a gala dinner. To enhance physical and mental well-being, The Slate will also provide 20-minute “stretchercise” and sunset rituals, along with mindfulness moments at KRU Precision Wellness, and the meeting room will even include fitness elements.

The health-giving package is priced at $515 USD (single) and $362 (double) and is valid until October 31, 2022 for groups of 20 to 50 people.

To showcase The Slate’s  interiors, the new “Art Journey” is  a QR code-enabled tour that transports guests through this living gallery and introduces its original sculptures and installations.

Meeting-planners can choose from a selection of venues, including the pillar-free 500-person Tongkah Hall, the bright and bold Jomon Pavilion with its vast windows, elevated ceilings and skylights, two intimate suites, and the Coliseum Garden, a space for al fresco receptions and cocktail evenings.

Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit 2021

Africa’s Travel & Tourism Summit set to take off in September

The Department of Tourism and South African Tourism will host the first ever Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit, which is set to take place from 20th to 21st September 2021, coinciding with Tourism Month in South Africa.

Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit aims to be a catalyst for engagement on the current state of tourism on the African continent. Taking into account challenges facing the global tourism industry, Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit will, through various engagement sessions, gather the tourism sector to share insights and ideas to explore collaborative efforts that can lead to recovery.

With an array of issues currently facing the sector, Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit aims to attract African community delegates, African Tourism Ministers, industry Associations, Tourism Boards, Destination Marketing Organisations as well as various partners across the tourism value chain.

Some of the major topics for discussion at the Summit include aviation, innovation, technology, the health and safety protocols currently in place, as well as the continent’s positioning post the COVID-19 pandemic for the African continent.

SA Tourism’s Acting CEO, Sthembiso Dlamini, highlighted that the African continent is resilient and that this Summit is important as it will contribute towards picking up the momentum within the sector, as it works towards an inclusive recovery.

“The COVID-19 pandemic may have dealt tourism, both business and leisure tourism, a heavy blow, but we are now in the recovery phase, and a summit of this nature is critical in ensuring that we are aligned as a continent whilst reigniting the tourism industry,” says Dlamini.

The Summit will be hosted in a hybrid format, over a two-day period. Delegates will have the option of attending virtually, or at identified venues across South Africa, or at three additional locations on the rest of the African continent, pending COVID-19 lockdown regulations. All venues will have COVID-19 health and safety protocols in place.

“We have opted for the hybrid format in order for us, as a continent, to lead the way in demonstrating how tourism can be enjoyed safely whilst adhering to health protocols. It is important that we are diligent in reigniting the sector, as it contributes significantly to the African economy,” adds Dlamini.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Tourism as well as South African Tourism were not able to host the MICE-focused Meetings Africa and leisure-focused Africa’s Travel Indaba 2021 editions which usually take place in February and May annually.

While Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit should not be seen as a replacement, it does provide a platform to showcase the African continent’s leisure tourism offerings and business event capabilities.

“In the absence of Africa’s Travel Indaba in 2020 and 2021, Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit is an innovative initiative for promoting intra-Africa tourism and also for sharing insights into the “state of readiness” for South Africa and the rest Africa to welcome the world during and post-COVID-19 pandemic,” says Kwakye Donkor, Chief Executive Officer, Africa Tourism Partners.

“I commend South African Tourism and the South African National Convention Bureau, for once again, showing commitment and leadership in tourism promotion across the continent. It will be so great to meet traditional and emerging trade partners again during the Summit. Well done to Team South Africa Tourism! We look forward to a very fruitful Summit,” concluded Donkor.

The SA Tourism Acting CEO also emphasised that Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit will act as a think tank for the continent, creating a platform for Africa’s tourism leaders to create solutions for Africa and contribute to global solutions for the industry.

Committed to ongoing transformation and development of the South African tourism industry, Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit will feature a dedicated day to empower SMMEs in the sector on 19 September 2021, as a precursor to the two-day conference which takes place on 20th and 21st September 2021.

Open to delegates from all countries, this Summit is an invitation to the world to join in as the African continent not only gears itself for recovery, but also to share in the African story.

Registration for the Summit will open in the afternoon on Friday, 20th August 2021 and you can register on https://www.africatourismsummit.com/. Stay tuned to our social pages for more information on registration details.

Lake Geneva gets new hotel

Travel news from around the world

Switzerland:

The Woodward is Geneva’s first all-suite hotel, and it sits on Lake Geneva with stunning vistas of Mont Blanc.

The bar on luxury living in Geneva has been raised, thanks to the Sept. 1 opening of The Woodward Geneva, a 26-room all-suite hotel located on Quai Wilson, right on the shores of Lake Geneva with views of Mont Blanc.

The post-Haussmann-style building has long stunned from the outside, with a facade dating back to 1901 designed by French architect François Durel. While it started as L’Hôtel Bellevue and then became a private bank, it has now been meticulously restored back into a hotel, with every detail thoughtfully designed, led by the Pierre-Yves Rochon — the architect behind some of the world’s finest hotels, like the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, The St. Regis Rome, The Savoy in London, and Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris.

“Guests of The Woodward will feel as though they have taken up residence in a spectacular lake house unlike any other, combining the familiar comforts of a grand, luxury hotel with the warm embrace of personal touches found throughout,” Timo Gruenert, CEO of Oetker Collection, tells Travel + Leisure.

The elegance of the Belle Époque hotel starts with the wrought-iron door featuring hand-decorated gold-leaf trimmings. This leads into a lobby surrounded with Macassar ebony wood walls and lustrous carpets. The lounge has Rochon’s own sofas atop Nepalese carpets, French gilded mirrors, a Baccarat crystal chandelier, a Hervé Van der Straeten bronze table, and Ralph Lauren armchairs. There are also pieces by Yann Jallu, made of gypsum, which is so fragile it would usually crumble when touched.

Each suite feels like a home of its own, with individual decor in every unit. “A favorite of mine is the Mont Blanc Suite, with its breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Geneva’s peaceful blue waters and the majestic mountain ridge in the distance,” Gruenert tells T+L. “The apartment-style suite boasts subtle shades of ivory and blue, coupled with beautiful design features such as marquetry doors, Lalique door handles, and a stunning Baccarat crystal chandelier. And I can’t forget the experience bar, which takes the traditional minibar and in-room entertaining to a whole new level.”

The food offerings are just as elevated, with outposts of two New York Michelin-starred restaurants, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon (featuring a 36-person counter around an open kitchen) and Le Jardinier (located on two lakeside verandas). Both kitchens will be led by chef Olivier Jean, who was the executive chef at Taipei’s Michelin-starred L’Atelier.

Additionally, there will be two bars and a tea room, plus a cigar lounge in the building’s former bank vault. “Genevans have high expectations and refined palates,” Jean said in a statement. “They travel, they like novelty, but they appreciate the familiar… I want this restaurant to be a must for any epicurean!”

Relaxation also comes in style, thanks to the 12,917-square-foot Club Woodward, a fitness and wellness facility with a Guerlain Spa and the city’s longest private indoor swimming pool at nearly 70 feet, plus a gym, two saunas, two steam rooms, two Swedish baths, a Jacuzzi, six wellness rooms, and a barber room.

The Woodward is the tenth Masterpiece Hotel to be added to the Oetker Collection, which includes legendary properties like the Eden Rock St. Barths and Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in France’s Cap d’Antibes. It also marks the first all-suite hotel in Geneva.
