Project of the Week: Viceroy Bocas del Toro Panama

Travel news from around the world

Panama:

Spectacular new overwater villas are coming to Panama with the forthcoming opening of a Viceroy Hotel Group scheme in Bocas del Toro, our latest Project of the Week.

Set above Caribbean waters on the edge of the rainforest, this development, which incorporates a stylish resort and luxury residences for sale, will immerse guests in their surroundings when it opens in early 2022.

Drawing on Panama’s beautiful surroundings
Together with West Resort and Hospitality Investors Group, Viceroy Hotel Group is creating a one-of-a-kind scheme that makes the most of its natural setting on 457 acres of coastline. Zurcher Arquitectos is overseeing the development and Wimberly Interiors is behind the interior design.

Altogether, the Viceroy Bocas del Toro Panama is promising to deliver 186 guestrooms including 42 overwater villas, with three miles of private white-sand beach and abundant opportunities for outdoor pursuits such as sailing, hiking and surfing. Arguably the greatest draw, the villas, will boast private plunge pools, decks with direct ocean access and uninterrupted views of the Caribbean.

This accommodation will be joined by eight restaurants and lounges, from a fine-dining venue to a beach grill, as well as a library, cinema lounge, fitness centre and meeting space. Meanwhile, the spa will be home to private rejuvenation pools tucked into pockets of the rainforest.

Offering guests a choice of activities
The resort experience will be defined by signature programming curated through local partnerships. Adventurous activities that promise to immerse guests in their natural surroundings range from rainforest zip-lining and sailing to snorkelling and deep-sea fishing.

Significantly, Viceroy Bocas del Toro Panama will be an eco-friendly destination. Its outdoor design incorporates indigenous plants, and only sustainable technologies and electric cars will be allowed.

Giving the scheme an added sense of exclusivity, the site will only be accessible by boat, seaplane or helicopter.

Six Senses Galapagos becomes first-ever luxury resort in the Galapagos Islands

Six Senses Galapagos

Six Senses Galapagos

Ecuador:

IHG’s luxury brand Six Senses is to be the first-ever resort on the idyllic Pacific paradise of the Galapagos Islands.

Six Senses Galapagos offers one of a kind experience
The Galapagos Islands, an archipelago far off the Pacific Coast of Ecuador, is one of the planet’s most biodiverse regions. Known for its variety of wildlife, it is also on many travellers’ bucket lists.

Six Senses Galapagos

Now, there is even more reason to visit these fabled islands, as a stunning new property by luxury hotel brand Six Senses welcomes guests on San Cristobal.

Six Senses Galapagos is set in a serene, lush environment on the archipelago’s quiet main island which has uninterrupted views over the ocean and other natural landmarks. Guests will be able to amble around the inimitable haven, meeting the locals – the giant tortoise, blue-footed boobies and sea lions.

Arturo Kayser, Chief Executive Officer, Orgal Group, Six Senses’ partners in the venture, said, “The Galápagos Islands are a magical destination with a unique place in natural history. Our guests will come face-to-face with their raw beauty and experience the extraordinary wildlife which inspired Charles Darwin to develop his Theory of Evolution.”

“Joining forces with Six Senses represents a great alignment of visions: a commitment to sustainability and preservation of the environment while enhancing social and economic benefits of the local community. We’re excited to be working on this iconic project with them,” Mr Kayser elaborated.

Sustainability at Six Senses
It is perhaps no surprise that building restrictions on the islands are incredibly strict, and development is only allowed on 3% of the total area, so it makes sense that Six Senses would become the first hotel brand to build a resort on the archipelago, given their commitment to sustainable practices in every aspect of their service and offering.

Neil Jacobs, Chief Executive Officer, Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas, said, “Sustainability is at the core of our brand, influencing everything from ongoing community engagement and conservation efforts to the local, repurposed materials used in the development.”

“We are excited and delighted to work with Orgal Group on this extraordinary project in such a special and environmentally sensitive place, staying true to our joint purpose of ecosystem restoration, scientific research of marine species and low-impact tourism,” Mr Jacobs went on to say.

The resort has several sustainable aims, including restoring the original endemic Miconia ecosystem, getting rid of invasive species and maintaining a native plant nursery on the hotel’s premises.

Zimbabwe floods Victoria Falls with vaccines to help tourism

Travel news from around the world

Victoria Falls:

To promote Victoria Falls as a safe destination, President Emmerson Mnangagwa s government has made vaccines available to all 35,000 residents of the town that shares a name with the waterfall. An estimated 60% of the people there have been vaccinated with either the Sinopharm or Sinovac vaccines, both from China.

Although tourists have not returned in large numbers, Victoria Falls mostly has been spared the current wave of COVID-19 that has swept across the rest of Zimbabwe and southern Africa, which health officials attribute to the town’s relatively high level of vaccinations.

Nationwide, over 1.8 million people, slightly more than 12% of Zimbabwe’s population, have received a first dose, while more than 900,000 people are fully vaccinated with two doses.

On the strength of the vaccination rate in Victoria Falls, the government last week reopened two land borders that link the town to the neighboring countries of Zambia, Namibia and Botswana. Travelers with proof of vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test will be permitted entry.

Is the Bernina Express the most spectacular railway journey in Europe?

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Switzerland:

Anyone in search of a beautiful train journey for a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience in 2021 or 2022 needn’t look further than Europe where the spectacularly scenic Bernina Express awaits.

Switzerland’s Bernina Express route runs from Chur and St Moritz in the east of the small country, before crossing the northern Italian border to Tirano.

This fascinating four-hour train ride negotiates 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and takes in three of Switzerland’s four language regions (Italian, Romansh and German), while allowing you to experience a UNESCO World Heritage Site (the line from Thusis – Valposchiavo – Tirano) up close.

Just as you’d expect from one of the world’s most captivating Alpine landscapes, the 90-mile Bernina Express route offers views of glorious glaciers, dramatic mountains and breathtaking lakes.

Whether you take the trip in the summer when you can see Switzerland’s verdant landscapes come alive or in the winter when snow covers the country creating a magical winter wonderland, this is one train journey to add to your holiday bucket list.

Some of the incredible experiences along the way include rolling over the UNESCO-protected Landwasser Viaduct that appears straight out of a Harry Potter film (just like the real movie location, the Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland).

The impressive Montebello Curve is another highlight and offers a view of the Bernina massif, the Morteratsch glacier, the three lakes of Pitschen, Nair and Bianco, as well as the Alp Grüm and the Brusio Circular Viaduct.

Meanwhile, the highest point on the Bernina Express’ journey is 2,253 metres above sea level, where you will find the Ospizio Bernina. Here, you’ll enjoy the Alps at their most spectacular.

During Covid-19, you’ll find a few changes, including the compulsory wearing of masks, staff observing distancing and cashless payments on board. However, the views remain as captivating as ever.

If you’ve been looking for a wonderful gift for someone you love, or decided to skip a 2021 escape for a dream trip in 2022, the Bernina Express is for you.

You can experience escaping to the open air of the Swiss Alps while enjoying one of the world’s top trains.

Discovering Slovenia’s underground labyrinths, one cave at a time

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Slovenia:

ORLEK, Aug 15 — The grass flickered gently above a crack in the limestone and Ludvik Husu instinctively knew he had found what he was searching for: A new cave in Slovenia’s dramatic Karst region.

The seasoned cave enthusiast, with more than 50 years’ experience, told AFP that “the conditions were perfect… all the signs pointed to something beneath” as he felt the air current push up from below.

The 63-year-old had come across a new, 60-metre (196-foot) deep limestone cave, a discovery that made the headlines this summer in a country that prides itself in its 14,000 underground grottoes.

The tiny Alpine nation is unusually rich in caves, which are a major tourist attraction. One even houses an entire castle and another was used the European Space Agency to help train astronauts.

Biological treasure trove

Perhaps best known is the Postojna cave system, the longest in Europe, unearthed by another amateur enthusiast two centuries ago.

When local lamplighter Luka Cec decided to explore a hidden crack while scouting out the Postojna area for a visit by Austrian Emperor Franz, he is reputed to have said that he had stumbled on “a new world… a paradise!”

The Postojna system extends for 24 kilometres (15 miles) and has offered up valuable finds for biologists.

Stanislav Glazar, a Postojna cave guide and speleology enthusiast, told AFP that more than 150 species have been discovered in the system.

Among them is the Proteus anguinus or “little dragon”, an ancient aquatic salamander that can live up to 100 years and was previously considered living proof that dragons had once existed.

A cave-dwelling beetle — the slender neck beetle or Leptodirus hochenwartii — was also found here, reputedly by Cec.

Glazar sid Postojna is one of the richest caves in the world “in limestone formations, with a dense concentration of stalactites, columns, pillars”.

The cave, situated some 50 kilometres south of the capital Ljubljana, was also home to the world’s first cave tourist train, which began transporting visitors in 1872.

‘No fear!’

Elsewhere in the Karst region, the cave systems are of historical, cultural and even extraterrestrial interest.

The dramatic, medieval Predjama castle was built in a cave mouth to make access difficult and to provide an escape route through a shaft in the rock face.

The Vilenica cave, which Slovenes have been exploring since 1633, is known for the annual eponymous literary prize awarded in its interior.

And the Unesco-listed Skocjan system was where the European Space Agency sent some astronauts to prepare for life in space.

“Astronauts know that the Karst world is exceptional, in a similar way to the environment in space: you don’t know what to expect at your next step,” said Skocjan Caves supervisor Tomaz Zorman.

But for Husu, it’s the hunt which proves most rewarding.

The “ideal time for cave searching is the winter” when the air above ground is cooler than that in the caves.

Once he knows there is something beneath, he digs around the crack to widen it and alerts fellow cavers to help gain access.

He then uses ropes and a lamp to descend into what are vertical entrances in most caves, known as “chimneys”.

But doesn’t he feel any trepidation at entering such unexplored depths?

“You enter a cave out of curiosity, there is no fear! Those who feel fear should stay home,” he said. — AFP

Irish myths and legends at Ballycastle, County Antrim

Ireland:

Irish myths and legends at Ballycastle, County Antrim

From the Children of Lir to the Old Witch the Cailleach, this beautiful walking country has many stories to tell.

An extract from “Legendary Ireland”, by Eithne Massey, bringing you on a tour of the rugged coast area around Ballycastle steeped in Irish myths and legends.

Originally published in Ireland of the Welcomes Magazine, in the July / August 2017 issue. Subscribe now to our sister publication printed six times annually.
Legend has it that Deirdre of the Sorrows landed at Ballycastle in County Antrim, when she returned to Ireland after a happy few years in Scotland with her lover Fergus. She was then forced to marry the King of Ulster and, later, killed herself when he threatened to give her to another man.

Although the story of Deirdre begins and ends at the court of the Ulster King Conchobhar in Armagh, perhaps its strongest connection is with the glens of Scotland, where Deirdre made her home with her lover. The lament Deirdre sings when leaving these glens has the same emotional depth as the one she sings when her lover is killed.

But we look to the extreme northeast coast of Antrim, to the landing-place where Deirdre returned after her few short years of happiness. Tradition has it that this landing place was Ballycastle Bay, just under Fair Head. The beach at Ballycastle is a pleasant one with magnificent views of Rathlin and Manannán’s Rock. Ballycastle is a lively seaside town and the site of Lammas Fair in August, a gathering that has its roots in the Lughnasa festival.

At the east end of its beach, there is a cluster of flat rocks, known as Pan’s Rocks because, in the past, salt-panning was carried on here by the local people. It is said that Deirdre protested to the very end against landing here, wanting to land on Rathlin Island where at least they had the security of the sea as a barrier between themselves and the jealous Conchobhar.

The sea journey to Rathlin Island is well worth making, not just for the experience of a beautiful and peaceful island, and the numbers of sea birds which make the island their home, but also for the friendliness and kindness of the people who live there – there is nothing quite like the feeling of staying on such an island when the last of the day visitors have left and the island sinks into its world of quietness.

Folk tradition says that Rathlin was formed when Fionn’s huge mother tripped and dropped a pile of stones in the bay, on her way to Scotland to buy whiskey – she lies drowned under the water, and, in stormy weather, people say, ‘The old witch is kickin’’. The idea of the Cailleach or Old Witch as the creator of the landscape links this northeastern point of Ireland with that extreme southwestern one – Béara.

Not far from Ballycastle is Torr Head. It was there that the traitorous warrior Barach forced Fergus Mac Róich – who had taken on the safety of Deirdre and the Sons of Usna as his personal responsibility – to leave his charges and dine with him at his fort. The journey around the coast from Ballycastle to Torr Head passes by Fair Head, where there are signposted walks on the cliffs.

The small valley of Lough na Cranagh holds a crannóg in a lake hedged by green hills. Here, the trees and the gentle hills give relief from the sometimes overpowering drama and tempest of the coastal views.

Fair Head is also the site where yet another giant has his residence – not, in this case, a figure from mythology, but a character from local folklore, known as the Grey Man. This cloaked figure may be seen striding along the cliffs, looking out towards the sea when a storm is brewing. Perhaps this figure is connected with the grey-cloaked god, Manannán, for the rock that bears his name is not far out to sea, in the wild Sea of Moyle where the Children of Lir spent the most miserable part of their time in exile. Here you feel closer to the Mull of Kintyre than to Ireland; and indeed, at those times in the past when land travel was made difficult by bogs and great forests, Scotland would have been more easily accessible than many parts of Ireland.

It is on Fair Head that during the reign of Elizabeth I, the old Gaelic chieftain, Sorley Boy, screamed his madness and grief when he heard the shrieks coming across the sound from Rathlin. He had sent the women and children of his clan there for safety but an invading fleet, led by Drake and Norris, landed on the island and butchered every one of them.

This is country that can best be appreciated by those prepared to do some walking, to immerse themselves in hidden valleys and wild headlands. Not far away is Cushendall and the site of Oisín’s Grave – a Neolithic court grave on Tievebullagh mountain. This is the country of Fionn and the Fianna, of hunters racing with their hounds and their horns down narrow glens towards the sea. If Deirdre’s ghost wanders here, it is a lonely one, continually looking eastwards across the sea towards the glens of Scotland.

Emirates adds new UK, US and Africa flights as borders reopen

Emirates is responding to a spike in travel demand across its network through the scaling up of its operations.

The decision follows a recent announcements that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) would be added to the amber list in the UK.

At the same time, the UAE has eased entry protocols for 12 countries, including South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Indonesia, Nigeria and Afghanistan.

In line with the easing of restrictions, the airline will be restoring capacity across 29 cities on its network on over 270 flights.

By October, the airline will increase its services to 73 weekly flights to the UK, including a six times a day London Heathrow operation, double daily A380 flights to Manchester, ten weekly services to Birmingham and daily services to Glasgow.

From today, Emirates will begin serving London Heathrow with three daily flights, all operated by its flagship A380.

Throughout August and September, Emirates will gradually increase its operations to London Heathrow, and by the middle of October, the airline will have restored its operations to six daily flights, of which four will be served by the A380.

Emirates currently flies to 12 cities in the United States on over 70 weekly flights, and will be adding additional frequencies to Houston, Boston and San Francisco over the course of August to accommodate for the seasonal influx of travellers.

Tierra Hotels  Chile has announced its reopening plan, which coincides with the opening of Chile’s borders. The brand, which has lodges in Patagonia, Atacama and the Island of Chiloe, offers tailor-made excursions and active adventures along with authentic gastronomy and wellness. For those looking to plan a journey to Chile from fall 2021 and beyond, Tierra Hotels has offers ranging from “incentives for pod travelers and private groups” to “buy now, travel later vouchers” to honeymoon or family programs.

Tierra Atacama will be the first property to reopen on September 3, 2021. It is a small, family-friendly hotel in San Pedro de Atacama—a village oasis at the heart of the desert in northern Chile. The resort, which blends ancient heritage with contemporary design, has eco-friendly architecture and impressive vistas. It offers a variety of excursions in the Atacama Desert, including hiking tours, desert bike rides, horseback adventures and more. After hiking through Moon Valley, guests can return to the Uma Spa for a “Reiki & Crystal Massage” or choose the “Saddle & Soak” to round off a long day on horseback with an immersion in the al fresco hot tub to relieve soreness and tired legs.

Tierra Patagonia, a boutique hotel in Torres del Paine National Park, is scheduled to reopen October 1. Well-suited for couples, solo travelers and families alike, the hotel offers panoramic views of the national park. The mountain ranges and abundant wildlife make it an ideal destination to enjoy outdoor adventures and the hotel offers a range of excursions, such as trekking, visiting a traditional estancia on horseback or taking a scenic drive to the best lookout points.

Additionally, the Uma Spa offers a heated, indoor pool, complete with hydro-massage and water jets, all encased in a glass-paneled sanctuary, with views of the wild surroundings.

Reopening October 30 is Tierra Chiloé, a boutique retreat set on rolling green hills with sea views. At the resort, visitors will find a connection with the landscape, wildlife and local communities, and also get to enjoy wellness facilities, home-grown cuisine and eco-friendly architecture. Tierra Chiloé immerses guests in the archipelago, which is awash in verdant pastures, dramatic coastline and scenic clifftops. Guests can also experience a guided wellness program consisting of forest bathing in the endemic rainforests on the island followed by spa treatments using local ancient ingredients like Maqui, which is a tree indigenous to the sub-Antarctic forests of Chile and Argentina.

Virtuoso Travel Week Underway Virtually and Live in Las Vegas

Virtuoso Travel Week has kicked off live in Las Vegas. After going virtual for the first time ever in 2020 due to the pandemic, this year is another first – a hybrid event that is successfully bringing together thousands of travel advisors and suppliers from around the world.

The events last from August 8-12, 2021, across three hotels, the Bellagio Resort & Casino, Vdara Hotel & Spa and Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

The event is open to vaccinated attendees only but features its signature one-on-one networking appointments for both in-person and virtual attendees. The event also provides opportunities for professional development as well as keynote speakers and awards and recognition of its many advisors for their achievements.

This year’s event kicked off as travel is on an upswing after a historic drop-off in business during 2020. The industry has shifted to recovery mode, following many months of struggling to survive.

Design concept: Voco Grand Central Glasgow

Travel news from around the world

This ambitious Voco-branded project has breathed new life into a famous hotel in Scotland’s largest city.

Reimagining an iconic Glaswegian building

Voco Grand Central Glasgow made its long-awaited debut in April 2021 following the multimillion-pound refurbishment of a 19th-century railway hotel, which saw it join IHG’s fast-growing upscale brand. The new-look scheme represents Voco’s first site in Scotland.

The refreshed building combines a celebration of its history with the key characteristics of the Voco brand. Among the work carried out was a transformation of the property’s event space, 184 guestrooms and public corridors, the creation of a dedicated kitchen for the historic champagne central bar, and the installation of an air-conditioning system and secondary glazing in all guestrooms.

Each element took into account the site’s historic value and central location, as well as its category A-listed building classification.

Reflecting the signature Voco style

Working alongside IHG, HLM Architects and Goddard Littlefair succeeded in meeting the Voco brand standards and modernising the hotel’s classic style through the addition of new elements such as soft furnishings, signage, bespoke artwork and accent lighting. The colour scheme now pairs neutrals and deep blues with Voco yellow and soft pink, while striking original features such as cornicing and stone archways have been retained.

Overall, this carefully considered transformation has drawn sensitively on the character of the historic building, while simultaneously modernising the guest experience.
