andBeyond Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp in Tanzania is to undergo an extensive rebuild.

The property will emerge with a brand-new identity as andBeyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge.

“andBeyond Grumeti was originally built in the early 1990s,” explained Niall Anderson, andBeyond chief operating officer, Africa lodges.

“While it has since undergone two refurbishments, when the Grumeti River burst its banks and the lodge was flooded in April 2020, we decided that it was time for a comprehensive rebuild.”

With interior design by Fox Browne Creative and architectural design by Jack Alexander, the rebuild will utilise the existing footprint of the former structure to redefine the classical tented camp look in a form that will least impact the natural landscape.

“We feel that what has always set the lodge apart is its magnificent setting on a tributary of the Grumeti River,” added Anderson.

“Our brief to the design team was to create spaces that would bring guests even closer to these riverside views, connecting them to nature while ensuring a sense of understated luxury.”

Drawing inspiration from the natural setting, the main guest areas will form a single sweeping arc that will follow the contours of the river, creating a series of sitting and dining areas that will flow naturally together.

The design will provide shelter from the environment while retaining a wide open and natural feel.

More than doubled in size, the guest suites will feature raised ceilings and taller doors, allowing for an abundance of natural light.

Canvas, banana fibre and hardwood cladding will add a layer of richness and call to mind the design of the original camp.

Guest suites will now also feature deep baths and indoor showers, as well as extensive outdoor decks with private plunge pools.

A family suite, which features an additional attached bedroom, will also be added to the lodge offering.

All buildings will be constructed from lightweight steel frames clad in canvas and sustainably sourced local hardwood.

An extended selection of experiences is also being developed in time for the launch of the lodge, which will reopen on June 6th next year.

September 30, 2021  –

Pendry Hotels & Resorts today announced the opening of Pendry Manhattan West, the latest property in the Pendry portfolio and the brand’s first hotel in New York City. In collaboration with Brookfield Properties, the hotel is designed by acclaimed architectural design firm, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and features 164 luxury guest rooms, including 30 suites, each with interiors by world-renowned Gachot Studios and lighting by L’Observatoire International. Pendry Manhattan West provides over 6,000 square feet of multi-purpose entertainment and meeting venues each featuring natural light; a state-of-the-art fitness center equipped with Peloton and Technogym equipment, and a curated art collection spotlighting works of art from both New York City and Los Angeles based artists. Pendry Manhattan West is also home to distinct food and beverage concepts including Bar Pendry, Garden Room, and signature restaurant, Zou Zou’s, which was created in partnership with acclaimed hospitality group, Quality Branded. Zou Zou’s is helmed by Chefs Madeline Sperling and Juliana Latif and brings an Eastern Mediterranean menu to the West Side.

Debuting as the fifth property to open as part of the Pendry portfolio, which currently includes Pendry San Diego, Sagamore Pendry Baltimore, Pendry West Hollywood and Pendry Chicago, Pendry Manhattan West was designed by Gachot Studios as a marriage of bicoastal American aesthetics: merging the serene and modern West Coast luxury of the Pendry brand with a sense of elegance, all informed by the vibrancy of New York City. Inspiration for the hotel is found in the spirit of the West Coast Light and Space Movement of the 1960s and 70s, shaping Pendry Manhattan West as a dynamic oasis for reflection and discovery. Blurring the lines between art and design, Gachot collaborated with internationally renowned local artists Nancy Lorenz and John Wigmore to envision work that is seamlessly integrated into the hotel’s interior architecture. Ultimately, the lived experience of Pendry Manhattan West is one of comfort, tranquility and ease.

Pendry is located in Manhattan West, one of Brookfield Properties’ most ambitious large-scale development projects to date. The eight-acre, six-building mixed-use complex is a “superblock” that stretches from 9th Avenue to 10th Avenue and from 31st to 33rd Streets, complete with 250,000 square feet of retail anchored by Peloton’s “Peloton Studios,” a 35,000-square-foot state-of-the-art flagship location, as well as a 60,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market. A vibrant urban plaza with landscaped gardens and dynamic street-front retail brings together high-end, experiential shops and more than 25 innovative food and beverage concepts, all enlivened with public art and events by Arts Brookfield, Brookfield’s award-winning arts and entertainment program. Part of this commitment to the arts is embodied in Midnight Theatre—a contemporary variety theatre that serves as a portal to unique stories and experiences featuring talent from the worlds of magic, music, comedy, Broadway, and more in the heart of Manhattan West. Pendry Manhattan West will provide guests exclusive and unprecedented access to the Theatre, as it redefines the way New Yorkers spend a night out in the city.

The Maldives Is Getting Another Stunning Hotel on a Private Island

The rebranding of the Kanuhara resort will be complete in 2022.

Six Senses is known for bringing upscale amenities, exclusive experiences, and a relaxing atmosphere everywhere it opens a new hotel. And since few places exude more luxury than the Maldives, the brand is getting ready to debut its second property in the idyllic destination.

Instead of building from the group up, however, Six Senses will work on its second collaboration with Singapore-based Hotel Properties Limited (HPL) to rebrand the already popular Kanuhura resort.

Encompassing three private islands — two deserted neighboring islands and Kanuhura itself — the property will offer the Maldives’ signature combination of white sands, turquoise waters, and lush greenery. Also synonymous with this archipelago nation? Luxurious accommodations with unbeatable views. And guests at the new property can expect nothing less.

The resort currently has 80 private villas, both on the beach and over the water. Throughout the rebranding process in the coming months, the accommodations will be upgraded to add private pools in the overwater villas and new family suites.

Other property enhancements will include fresh dining concepts, as well as new wellness programming. Meanwhile, those who prefer something more active will find water activities and high-performance equipment that allows for nearby turtle safaris, access to 40 dive sites, and more — all while learning about ocean conservation.

At the forefront of all the changes will be Six Senses’ unique ethos.

“Six Senses Kanuhura is a unique opportunity to combine our three best-loved ideals in life: sustainability, wellness, and locally themed experiences,” said Neil Jacobs, CEO of Six Senses, in a press release shared with Travel + Leisure. “By day, your feet will be sandy and your hair salty. By night, surrender to the spa and your skin will be smoothed, your soul will be soothed, and your mood will be as sparkling as your sundowner.”

IHG Hotels & Resorts and PT Hotel Dago Pakar extend their partnership in Indonesia with a second hotel – Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar – following the success of InterContinental Bandung Dago Pakar.

Scheduled to open in 2024, the 275-room Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar will be located in the Dago neighbourhood, in the northern region of Bandung.

As with every Hotel Indigo property, it will draw on the story of its local area to inspire all aspects of its design, décor and service style. Every detail, from the warmth of the welcome guests receive to the dishes served in the restaurants, create a highly-memorable cultural experience, inspired by the rich heritage of Dago Pakar and the vibrant spirit, passion and independence of Bandung.

Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar will weave three key themes into every aspect of the guest journey: the healing and restorative power of water, the craftmanship of local artisans, musicians, puppet masters and dancers that combines modern and traditional art forms, and the folklores and fables that have inspired generations of locals.

Purnawan Suriadi, Director, PT Hotel Dago Pakar, said: “We want to establish Dago Pakar as a must-visit destination, bring out a deeper understanding of our rich culture and heritage that intertwines European influence from its colonial past as well as its young vibrant creative culture, and forge a meaningful connection between our guests, our hotel and the community. The Hotel Indigo design philosophy, which uses storytelling to bring the neighbourhood to life within the hotel while providing a gateway to inspiring and culturally rich locations, aligns with our vision for this property.

“We have a strong partnership with IHG and are very happy with the continued success of InterContinental Bandung Dago Pakar despite the pandemic. Since opening in 2015, it has transformed the area into a popular luxury destination for business and leisure travellers.

“We are confident that IHG’s proven track record of success in quality and guest satisfaction, both internationally and in the region, will offer a uniquely local experience for guests at Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar.”

Serena Lim, Vice President, Development for South East Asia and Korea, IHG, said: “We are very excited to bring boutique brand Hotel Indigo to Bandung and extend our excellent partnership with PT Hotel Dago Pakar. The Hotel Indigo brand is growing in Indonesia with Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach and three more properties in the pipeline in Bintan and Jakarta.

“The brand’s growth momentum shows the appetite of travellers to explore the heart and soul of each location they go to and be inspired by new places, people and ideas. We are also seeing a demand for owners to create a unique hotel experience that celebrates and supports the neighbourhood and makes a positive impact on the community.

“With 24 hotels in Indonesia, Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar joins IHG’s pipeline in the country that includes 13 hotels with 2,520 rooms across five brands. With its growing middle class and large millennial population, we see Indonesia as a long-term key market for our estate of brands.”

Facilities at Hotel Indigo Bandung Dago Pakar will include a café & bar, meeting and event spaces measuring more than 1,800 sqm, a health and fitness club, two swimming pools, and a kids club. It will also offer the first rooftop pool and bar in Bandung with 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape and city.

Located on a site previously known as “Love Hill”, 700 metres above sea level, Dago Pakar is a rich botanical sanctuary surrounded by tea plantations, pristine forests and natural waterfalls, and offers scenic city views. A 30-minute drive to Bandung International Airport, the hotel is situated near to the Djuanda Forest Park, a vast conservation area and botanical garden with more than 2,500 types of plants and endangered animals.

Its central location makes it easy for visitors to explore the local community, and offers the chance to sample Indo-Dutch cuisine such as pisang molen (banana wrapped in baked flour), to “ngopi” which is the act of socialising with family and friends over local coffee and teh poci (tea in a pot), and immerse in the thriving folk art scene of creatives, artists, musicians, performers and writers.

Experience Cerro Guido with Felipe Howard – Southbound DMC founder and director

“Look Felipe, towards the East, beside a square rock with lichens, below the crack, there is another puma”.

I take my binoculars and start screening the rocks with lichens, it is difficult to find the puma, which is so well camouflaged until I do see it. Part of the excitement of our excursion is feeling the emotion of watching with patience until you detect the puma.

blank

During 5 days and 4 excellent nights, we went precisely to live the experience on the ground. We stayed at the Estancia Cerro Guido Hotel, the base for all our excursions and part of the wildlife conservation project that started here in 2019. Cerro Guido is an historic renovated mansion, nice and cosy, very comfortable with its authentic decoration from the days of the pioneers.

A Patagonian ranch which still operates as such and where, from the dining room, you have a privileged view of the Paine massif. A delicious breakfast was the start of our days of exploration. Personalized snacks kept us going during the day. We enjoyed the views to the Paine Mountain range from different perspectives, from Sierra del Toro (Bull Hill), from Condor hideouts, or the massive Sierra Baguales, which is another hidden treasure. Always enjoying sceneries with amazing colours that changed from day to day. With sunrises and sunsets with the Paine towers as a backdrop and away from the more bustling tourists tracks in Torres del Paine National Park.

Travel to Cerro Guido is not only to observe pumas; it is a complete wildlife experience as well as a cultural experience, when observing the life and work on the ranch. To be able to get to know the gauchos and listen to their stories, is a joy in itself.

It has been gratifying to take part in this experiment to achieve a healthy and long term coexistence between conserving the authentic wildlife and ranching in Patagonia.

September 24, 2021  – Hilton Porto Gaia occupies a renovated former port warehouse in Vila Nova de Gaia.

VILA NOVA DE GAIA, Portugal – Hilton (NYSE: HLT) today celebrates the opening of Hilton Porto Gaia, located in Vila Nova de Gaia. The 194-room former port warehouse is the latest addition to the internationally renowned Hilton Hotels & Resorts portfolio, and opens following a franchise agreement with Sabersal — Promoção Turística e Imobiliária, S.A.

“It is with great enthusiasm that we open the first Hilton Hotels & Resorts property in northern Portugal,” says Mónica Gonçalves, general manager of Hilton Porto Gaia. “This hotel is a highly anticipated new offering for the Portuguese market, and we are excited to welcome guests to this beautiful property which is steeped in history as a former port warehouse. Whether visiting Porto for leisure or for business, Hilton Porto Gaia will provide the perfect base for travelers, and the strength of the Hilton brand will be an enormous asset as we welcome guests from all over the world to the Porto-Gaia hub.”

“In partnership with Sabersal — Promoção Turística e Imobiliária, S.A., we are thrilled to open Hilton Porto Gaia, our second Portuguese property under our flagship Hilton Hotels and Resorts brand,” David Kelly, senior vice president, Continental Europe, Hilton, said.  “Though modern in style, the former port warehouse still retains the original shape in keeping with the area’s architecture, connecting guests to the history and culture of Vila Nova de Gaia through its unique design elements and locally inspired drinking and dining options. This opening solidifies our commitment to Portugal, Hilton Porto Gaia being the first in a series of new openings that will see Hilton’s portfolio more than double in the coming years.”

A 40 million Euro project development project preserved the property’s classic shape and structure, whilst substantial refurbishments took place influenced by the building’s unique character. Drawing on Porto-Gaia’s rich heritage, the hotel’s interior has been styled by the award-winning Portuguese designer Nini de Andrade Silva to offer contemporary comfort and sophisticated design throughout the eight floors and 32,000-square-meter space. The hotel’s rooms have also been designed with the building’s history in mind, and many offer excellent views of the Douro River and the historic centre of Porto-Gaia.

With a range of drinking and dining options, guests can enjoy the hotel’s two bars and restaurant, the latter of which is headed by celebrated chef Hugo Portela. Portela takes his inspiration from authentic local cuisine, interpreted with a modern and contemporary twist using locally sourced ingredients. The building’s two bars are an extension of this concept, with areas dedicated to artisan coffee prepared by specialist baristas and to the art of mixology, with signature cocktails that can be enjoyed with a panoramic view over the banks of the Douro River.

The hotel’s wellness centre, spread over 1,100 square meters, emphasises ‘slow beauty’, a holistic approach to the body, mind, and spirit. Guests can relax in dedicated rest areas and take advantage of the heated indoor pool, which references the building’s port wine history with its garnet-toned design. The space also hosts a dynamic fitness centre, with a fully equipped gym open to the public, and a stylish studio ideal for the practice of yoga, pilates and clinical pilates.

Hilton Porto Gaia offers more than 2,200 square meters of dedicated conference, event and meeting rooms. The extensive meeting space features a magnificent ballroom that can host up to 600 people and an impressive auditorium, which comfortably accommodates 350 attendees and is equipped with the latest technology, including a lift stage.

The hotel is part of Hilton Honors, the award-winning guest-loyalty programme for Hilton’s 18 distinct hotel brands. Hilton Honors members who book directly through preferred Hilton channels have access to instant benefits including a flexible payment slider that allows members to choose nearly any combination of Points and money to book a stay, exclusive member discounts, free standard Wi-Fi and access to the Hilton Honors mobile app.

Hilton Porto Gaia Hotel is located at number 124 on Rua Serpa Pinto, in Vila Nova de Gaia. For more information and reservations, travelers may visit the official website or call +351 22 244 9200. The property is owned by Sabersal — Promoção Turística e Imobiliária, S.A. Hilton Porto Gaia joins more than 120 Hilton Hotels & Resorts properties in Europe, including the recently opened Hilton Rijeka Costabella Beach Resort & Spa

September 23, 2021  – Pan Pacific Hotels Group continues to grow its global pipeline with 13 new properties across 10 key gateway cities by 2024. More than 3,300 rooms will be added to the Group’s inventory, bringing its portfolio to 48 hotels, resorts, and serviced suites across 29 cities. Pan Pacific Hotels Group’s parent UOL Group Limited is one of Asia’s most established hotel and property companies.

This move sees the Group establish its presence in key gateway cities, including London, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Dalian, Hanoi, Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap.

This expansion started from the recent openings of PARKROYAL Monash Melbourne in April and Pan Pacific London on 1 September, which will be followed by 13 other properties in the coming three years.

“We recognise that the world is saddled with the crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, in the long run, businesses and economies will be reignited through various measures. Travel for leisure and business will have to resume. The hospitality industry will recover. We are fortunate to be able to tap into UOL’s development and design capabilities and are planting our seeds for the future through strategic footprints in key gateway cities, with the view that when the skies reopen, we will be well-placed in strategic locations to take advantage of returning demand,” said Mr. Choe Peng Sum, Chief Executive Officer, Pan Pacific Hotels Group.

Freshly unveiled on 1 September is Pan Pacific London, Pan Pacific Hotels Group’s flagship hotel in Britain. With 237 keys, the mixed-use development is the pride of a dream design team: it is designed by London-based and award-winning firm PLP Architectures, with the hotel interiors helmed by Yabu Pushelberg, and Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio for its destination bar in Devonshire Row. One Bishopsgate Plaza is owned and developed by UOL

Owing to this visionary architecture, Pan Pacific London has already been awarded the “5 Star Winner for Best Hotel Construction and Design UK”, “Best Hotel Architecture London” and “Best Mixed-Use Architecture London” at the International Property Awards (UK).

Pan Pacific London is centrally seated at One Bishopsgate Plaza, a two-minute walk from Liverpool Street Station. This strategic location secures not only convenience and connectivity to the rest of London, but it also affords guests amazing views of London’s most iconic landmarks, such as the River Thames, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, The Gherkin, St. Paul’s Cathedral and Canary Wharf.

Hôtel Madame Rêve to Open in Paris’ Louvre Post Office Building

airline news

Travel news from around the world

Created by restaurateur, founder and art director Laurent Taïeb, Hôtel Madame Rêve is set to open its doors this October. The independent hotel will have 82 design-led rooms, including 19 suites located on the top floor, either overlooking an internal vertical sky garden or the Parisian cityscape. Star suites will offer views over well-known sights including the Eiffel Tower, the Sacré-Coeur or Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Housed in Paris’ iconic Louvre post office building in the heart of the city’s creative hub, dubbed as the “new” Golden Triangle, Madame Rêve is set to draw footfalls with designer boutiques, museums and chic restaurants on its doorstep. Located in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, the heritage building is one of the most recognizable in the city and a familiar address to Parisians for over a century. It is flanked by streets lined with cafés and galleries, such as the Pinault Collection and is located within walking distance to the Tuileries Gardens and the Louvre Museum—with whom the hotel will partner with for bespoke guest experiences.

A 10,000-square-foot roof terrace and sky garden on the fourth floor will offer 360-degree views of the cityscape and has an expansive deck where guests can sip on cocktails. The rooftop structure was inspired by pioneering engineer and architect Gustave Eiffel. Comparable to the concept of London’s Chiltern Firehouse, Madame Rêve offers the intimacy and privacy of a new-age boutique hotel.

Inspired by the travels of Taïeb, guests will have a choice of two restaurants, overseen by Chef Benjamin Six, best known from his time at modern Japanese restaurant Zuma. Mediterranean-style fare is available all day in the 19th-century café brasserie on ground level with an open-air terrace stretching out onto a private pedestrianized street, ideal for al-fresco dining. An elevator ride three stories up will take guests to the 21st-century restaurant-bar serving Japanese-influenced cuisine.

The hotel has been designed by Taïeb’s friend and interior designer Andrée Putman. In the ground floor lobby, the hotel’s 19th-century architecture and characterful design embraces its Parisian roots through thoughtful woodwork, oak flooring, velvet curtains and golden-brown hues throughout, reminiscent of the brasseries of the Riviera. As visitors move higher up the hotel, they are taken on a modern voyage through indoor gardens and wooden surroundings.

Furniture has either been custom-made or restored. Many items have been sourced by French artisans, namely Henryot & Cie 1867 whose distinctive chairs can be spotted at Le Jules Verne restaurant inside the Eiffel Tower or dotted around the Louis Vuitton Foundation art museum in Paris. Londoners may recognize the Pierre Frey fabrics, also used to dress the punchy interiors at sketch’s Parlour tearoom in Mayfair.

Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Granted “SafeBE” Certification

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre has become Malaysia’s first venue to be granted the “Safe Business Events” (SafeBE) certification, a hygiene and safety label, by Bureau Veritas.

Initiated and supported by the Business Events Council Malaysia, the certification program gained collaboration from Malaysian Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers and the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau to drive the venue certification process to create an end-to-end safe and secure event journey for organizers and participants alike. It recognizes a venue’s implementation of the government-endorsed Business Events Standard Operating Procedures and the team’s operational excellence in event management, food and hospitality service standards in the new norm.

The centre was assessed on its processes, facilities and people in order to be deemed worthy of accreditation. The assessment was based on correct implementation of equipment, tools, quality standards, team knowledge, training and expertise, in order to ensure the venue’s compliance with the assessors’ criteria and ability to operate safely in the new norm.

Alan Pryor, the venue’s general manager, said in a press release, “We want every step of the event organizer and visitor journey to instill trust and assurance in our venue, team and the destination. This is part of our broader strategy for business recovery and continuity, as well as our mission to increase public and business confidence in the international standards of venue operations in Malaysia. We highly recommend that other venues undertake this certification program to elevate the country’s attractive value proposition and profile as a safe destination for business events.”

Last year, the Malaysian Association of Hotel and Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents initiated a similar safety certification standard, the “Clean and Safe Malaysia” and “Travel Safe Malaysia: Hygiene Excellence and Safety Label,” respectively. With the business events industry also embarking on this path, Malaysia’s tourism and hospitality industry is set to welcome back event delegates and visitors safely.
