Breckenridge Ski Resort to open for 2022-23 winter season two days earlier than planned

November 10, 2022 –

Thanks to great temperatures and productive snowmaking, plus 14 inches of fresh snow over the weekend, Breckenridge Ski Resort will open for the 2022-23 winter season two days earlier than planned, today, Wednesday, Nov. 9

Breckenridge Ski Resort

“We are thrilled to kick off the winter season early this year thanks to cold temperatures and great progress on snowmaking at the resort,” said Jody Churich, vice president and chief operating officer at Breckenridge Ski Resort. “While Mother Nature has provided the temps, I want to give a huge shoutout to all of our resort employees for making this possible. We can’t wait to welcome back our Breck community to the mountain for the 2022-23 winter season. ”

For Opening Day, skiers and riders will have access to approximately 54 acres of terrain on Peak 8, accessed by the Colorado SuperChair and 5-Chair. In addition, learning terrain and carpets will be available in the Rip’s Ride learning area. The Rip’s Ride chairlift is planned to open for the season and debut as a new high-speed quad on Friday, Nov. 11.

The free BreckConnect Gondola will begin running for the season on Wednesday at 8 a.m. to provide access to the base of Peak 8. Skiers and riders can take advantage of free parking in the North and South Gondola lots on Wednesday and Thursday, before moving into paid parking operations on Friday.

Starting Wednesday, Breckenridge Ski Resort will be open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with plans to operate into May as long as the snow lasts.

Following Keystone’s successful opening last month, skiers and riders will now have access to two Summit County resorts on the Epic Pass. Additionally, with Keystone opening in October and Breck skiing and riding all the way through May, the two resorts offer one of the longest winter seasons of any major resort in the country. Epic Passes are available now and prices go up Nov. 20. Lift tickets will be limited every day of the season this year, so guests should plan in advance to secure their spot on the slopes.

WAKE UP BRECK – THURSDAY, NOV. 10

Join Breckenridge Ski Resort and the Town of Breckenridge at participating coffee shops across Town to collect a FREE commemorative coffee mug and a free cup of coffee. Thursday’s event begins at 7 a.m. and lasts until all mugs run out. Breckenridge Ski Resort will also be collecting cans of food and non-perishable items during Wake Up Breck. Participants are encouraged to bring ‘Cans for Coffee’ to the event for donation to the Family & Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC) local food bank. For more information, including participating coffee shops, visit the resort’s event listing.

RIP’S RIDE GRAND OPENING & RIBBON CUTTING – FRIDAY, NOV. 11

On Friday, Nov. 11, the opening week party will continue at Peak 8 with the Rockstar DJ Cat and free waffles again, plus the grand opening of the newly upgraded Rip’s Ride chairlift. The resort will host a ceremonial ribbon cutting and first chair at 8:30 a.m. with 8 pairs of Oakley goggles up for grabs for those who get first chair, as well as those who are lapping the lift within the first two hours of operation. Formerly a fixed-grip double chair, the new high-speed quad will provide skiers and riders with faster access to Peak 8’s primary beginner terrain, allowing for more time spent on the snow, as well as easier and more convenient access to Peak 9. The chairlift was upgraded over the summer and fall in preparation for the upcoming winter season. Parts of the former Rip’s Ride chair were upcycled and reused on the resort’s 6-Chair, an effort that helps towards goals of zero waste, while 85 of the former chairs were auctioned off to benefit the local community. The Rip’s Ride chair auction raised more than $100,000 in total, with $50,000 going to the Summit County Rescue Group, and the remainder of the proceeds being split between the Summit Foundation and the Epic Promise Foundation.

EARLY SEASON & UPHILL ACCESS

Please be reminded that limited terrain and early season conditions exist. Breckenridge Ski Resort requires all skiers and riders to observe all posted signs and warnings. Closed trails may contain hazards due to limited natural snow coverage and snowmaking operations. For the safety of all guests, please keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. Uphill access at Breck is currently not open due to early season mountain preparations and snowmaking. The resort will announce when uphill access is open to guests once early season operations are complete and there is adequate terrain to safely permit these activities.

Grayson Hotel opens its doors in New York with 296 rooms

Grayson Hotel opens its doors in New York with 296 rooms

Grayson Hotel New York

November 10, 2022 – Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) announced today the opening of Grayson Hotel, introducing The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand to New York. In a city that has been rewriting its story for nearly 350 years, Grayson Hotel’s industrial-chic personality pays homage to the turn-of-the-century industrialization of New York and the cross-cultural culinary awakening it inspired, ushering in a bright new chapter.

Grayson Hotel New York

Located in Midtown Manhattan and steps from Fifth Avenue and Bryant Park, Grayson Hotel gives guests the freedom to explore the very best of the city that never sleeps—discovering story worthy experiences like never before. Although Grayson Hotel occupies a brand-new building at 30 W. 39th Street, it tells the story of its surrounding neighborhoods: Murray Hill, named for the Irish-born merchant who came to New York in 1753; the Garment District, America’s fashion epicenter since 1919; and most recently, Hudson Yards, a sprawling 28-acre neighborhood built over a historic rail yard.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Each of Grayson Hotel’s 296 guestrooms have been carefully designed with the destination in mind, showcasing a collection of artwork curated by Indie Walls, a full-service global art consultancy, highlighting beloved historical sites in New York City. Guestrooms and suites feature the juxtaposition of grace and grit—interiors with exposed concrete ceilings, bathrooms with subway tiles, and bespoke artwork designed to evoke an authentic sense of Manhattan style.

Decor elements in both the rooms and suites feature vintage books and objects that represent industrial accomplishments, past and present, fully immersing guests in the unique story of the hotel. Three interconnecting hotel suites on the fourth floor offer private balconies with views of landmarks old and new.

In-room amenities include a butler style mini bar service offering to-go craft cocktails and locally sourced snacks and beverages. Additional amenities include Lather bath and body products in bamboo lemongrass scent; custom-designed “hoodie” bathrobes and a bronze statue of the hotel’s French Bulldog mascot, Grayson. Guests will also be met with a 24-hour fitness center, GRIT, which features all the essentials for a great workout, including SoulCycle commercial bikes, TRX treadmills, a StairMaster HIIT machine, dumbbells, cross trainers, and more.

Hotel guests benefit from Midtown Manhattan neighborhood perks such as views overlooking picturesque Bryant Park, the Empire State Building, the new Freedom Tower, and One Times Square, site of the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop.

CULINARY

Acclaimed New York City-based hospitality company Apicii, helmed by founder and CEO Tom Dillon and led by an all-star team of hospitality veterans including Michelin-starred Chief Culinary Officer Jonathan Benno and Beverage Director Kyle Tran, will open multiple dining experiences at Grayson Hotel beginning this fall. Inspired by the team’s deep knowledge and experience with Mediterranean and Mexican cuisines, as well as extensive travels and long relationships with culinary pioneers, distillers and craftsmen across each region, Grayson Hotel’s culinary and beverage concepts deliver an oasis away from the bustle of Bryant Park and Midtown Manhattan. All restaurant concepts and design are overseen by Dutch East Designs.

The ground floor all-day dining restaurant, Harta, will offer a pan-Mediterranean Brasserie featuring a collaborative menu between Chef Jonathan Benno and Executive Chef Mark Zuckerman that reflects an exploration of regional cuisine. Among Harta’s dish highlights are artichokes with red kuri squash and rainbow carrots, brodetto with a variety of seafood in a tomato-saffron broth, and black bass with artichokes, fennel, radish and vadouvan broth. These join a dessert menu with items such as a créme fraiche panna cotta served with shredded honey filo, blackberries and mint. The wine program features a hand-picked list of Old and New World wines selected to complement the cuisine. Bar Harta, a convivial wine and tapas bar with a seasonal patio, will welcome guests on the second floor.

Located on the 28th floor, Bar Cima is an intimate, rooftop mezcaleria with indoor-outdoor seating spanning views from the Empire State Building to the East and Hudson Rivers. The interior evokes polished Mexican luxury, welcoming guests through walnut and brass–adorned doors into an intimate lounge area with jewel-toned seating in patterned velvets, custom stone tables with ornately carved bases and an antique mirrored ceiling. The bar itself is a jewel box for the expansive mezcal and tequila collection, made from tall walnut shelving lined with earth-toned stone panels. Out on the north terrace, guests will find a wall of tiles with copper sconces playing off their patterns and furnishings with wrapped-rope and colorful metal details, alongside breathtaking views.

DESIGN

Among Grayson Hotel’s architectural highlights, guests will find concrete ceilings, high-gloss woods, and a stunning spiral staircase that invites guests on an unforgettable journey celebrating the New York City neighborhoods and ethnic cuisines that define and unite the city. The architecture and design of Grayson Hotel is credited to Italian Marcello Pozzi, founder and principal of MarceLLO Pozzi architecture & design (MLLO), a progressive practice that spans architecture, interior and industrial design. The guestroom’s design elements are developed and implemented by The Setting New York. The new-build hotel is owned, developed and managed by the Fortuna Hotel Collection.

The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand includes 35 unique hotels around the world with the addition of Grayson Hotel. Whether it’s a captivating past, an exclusive location, famous architecture and design, or an award-winning dining experience, each property within The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand maintains a distinct character, freedom to be unique and inspires stories worth collecting, while providing guests with the World of Hyatt loyalty program and a trusted brand name and reputation.

Opening preview rates begin at $409 per night. To book a stay at Grayson Hotel or to learn more about the property, please visit www.graysonhotel.com or @graysonhotelnyc on Instagram.

How sustainable and responsible is Norway?

How sustainable and responsible is Norway?

How sustainable and responsible is Norway?

09 November 2022

Norway is viewed as the most sustainable and responsible destination, according to WTM London’s survey of the travel industry’s top decision-makers, with Costa Rica coming a close second.
WTM London’s Industry Report 2022 asked travel executives: “Which destination do you most perceive as a model for sustainability and responsibility?” and 15% opted for Norway, while 14% said Costa Rica.

Norway, an all-year-round destination for adventure and outdoor lovers, incorporates sustainability into the nation’s everyday life, with its energy primarily powered by hydropower; a sustainable transport network and speed limits that are lower than many other European countries.

It encourages visitors to do the same, inviting tourists to travel like a local.

Its capital, Oslo, consists of two-thirds wood and water and was named European Green Capital of 2019.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, has become a top destination for global travellers seeking wellness, health, relaxation, adventure and reconnection with nature.

The country is home to over 6% of the planet’s biodiversity and has become a pioneer in ecotourism, creating national parks, wildlife reserves and conservation projects in order to become as sustainable as possible.

World Travel Market London Exhibition Director, Juliette Losardo, said:
“More people are looking for sustainable travel options and countries such as Norway and Costa Rica are shining a light on what is possible and making it easier for people to travel in a sustainable way.

“The binding element to such countries is that sustainability is at the heart of the nation’s lifestyle and it follows that people living in these destinations, who want to retain their natural wealth, are encouraging visitors to be environmentally and socially responsible too.”

Also making the top-10 list are:

Maldives (13%)
New Zealand (12%)
Finland (11%)
Iceland (9%)
Bhutan (6%)
Slovenia (4%)
Kenya (4%)
Galapagos Islands (3%)

70% of Global tourism of the pre pandemic levels reached

Global tourism reached around 70% of the pre-pandemic levels

Global tourism reached around 70% of the pre-pandemic levels

09 November 2022

Global tourism has currently reached around 70 percent of the pre-pandemic levels, according to the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

The UN travel body, however, said innovative and urgent measures needed to develop the sector further as “the window of opportunity will not stay open forever”.

“We need to rethink tourism – as a provider of jobs, an economic pillar, and, against the backdrop of COP27, as a solution to the climate emergency,” UNWTO Secretary-General Pololikashvili said.

“Our job is to create jobs,” Pololikashvili told tourism sector leaders at the ministers’ summit at the World Travel Market on Tuesday.

The joint platform for public and private sector leaders addresses tourism’s most pressing issues and sets the agenda for the years ahead.

Held around the theme of ‘Rethinking Tourism’, the 16th summit gathered ministers and high-level delegates from 19 countries, alongside business leaders.

Opening the event, Pololikashvili emphasised the unique opportunity to transform the sector.

Juliette Losardo, exhibition director at World Travel Markets, also echoed the UNWTO stance and said a post-pandemic world has revealed exciting opportunities and given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reconsider tourism and ask how to rebuild and better prepare for the future.

While the summit promoted diversity of thought, background and experiences, a focus on tourism’s unique power as a driver of sustainability and as a promoter of peace and understanding proved a common theme.

Participants emphasized that now is the time for the tourism sector to focus more on cooperation rather than competition.

Ministers also acknowledged UNWTO Secretary-General’s call for tourism to be mainstreamed within the political agenda and for greater collaboration between ministries of tourism and those of economy, business and environment.

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, México Welcomes Guests to a Verdant Refuge on the Pacific Coast

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, México Welcomes Guests to a Verdant Refuge on the Pacific Coast

November 9, 2022 –

Deeply committed to preservation of the natural landscape, celebrating Mexico’s rich heritage and providing the ultimate luxury travel experience, Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, México is now welcoming guests to a pristine coastal reserve that for centuries has been completely off the grid – until now.

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo

“In Tamarindo, Four Seasons guests will feel connected to the jungle, the ocean, and to one another. The Resort immerses guests in the wonders of the natural world,” says Christian Clerc, President, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. “We are deeply grateful to our owner-partners Paralelo 19, whose family has cared for this land for generations, and are now trusting Four Seasons and our people to share in their commitment to preserving this beautiful destination and celebrating its remarkable culture.”

Just 2% of the surrounding 3,000 acre (1,220 hectare) private nature Reserve is being developed, offering endless opportunities for visitors to explore through guided excursions on land and sea. The Resort includes 157 cliffside and beachfront accommodations – many with private pools – along with authentic dining options, an outstanding golf course, transformative spa and wellness experiences, three pools and three nearly-deserted beaches for watersports and long days in the sun.

“Our vision was to build a modern Mexican resort and make it a testimonial of our country’s rich heritage,” says Pedro Verea Hernandez, CEO of Paralelo 19, the owners of Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, México.

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo has formed philanthropic alliances with Ensamble Artesano and Taller Maya to protect pre-Hispanic culture, support Mexican artisans and offer financial recognition to continue valuing their work. Both organizations’ craftsmanship is reflective of Mexico’s incredible abundance of beautiful, handcrafted fabrics and art. Guests are surrounded by puro talento Mexicano at every turn, from building architecture and design of indoor and outdoor spaces, to myriad details ranging from artworks to tableware and team uniforms. The Resort’s boutique features many handcrafted items that will allow guests to take tangible reminders of their time in Tamarindo home.

“As we join our partners in guardianship of this incredible environment, we welcome our guests to participate in its next chapter through discovery of its breath-taking beauty and fascinating cultural influences from the surrounding area and across the country,” says General Manager Félix Murillo. “In Tamarindo guests can expect to fall in love with Mexico all over again as they become fully engaged in the destination, people and traditions.”

Seamlessly blending tradition and modernity, Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo was designed by architects Victor Legorreta and Mauricio Rocha, who came together as LegoRocha specifically for this project. Lead interior designers are Uribe Krayer and Estudio Esterlina, landscaping is by Mario Schjetnan, and restaurant designers are Esrawe Studio and Bibiana Huber.

Paradise Found

At Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, there’s so much to do – or not do, if that is one’s preference. Resident biologists and researchers lead guests on guided hikes along natural footpaths created by indigenous wildlife, through jungles and along the coastline. Learn about medicinal plants used since pre-Hispanic times, and get to know the 70 endemic species and hundreds more birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles that call Tamarindo home. Stop by the Discovery Centre to learn more about the region’s biodiversity and the “rewilding” efforts that are enabling the Earth’s natural rhythms to flourish here.

Most underrated destinations – Azores and Northern Greece

Most underrated destinations - Azores and Northern Greece

Most underrated destinations – Azores and Northern Greece

08 November 2022

The Azores and Northern Greece have made it into the top-10 list of ‘most underrated destinations’ – as voted for by top executives in the travel industry.

WTM London’s 2022 Industry Report reveals 14.5% of respondents said the Azores was the most underrated destination in the world, while 14% opted for Northern Greece.

The Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal, is an archipelago in the mid-Atlantic, which is growing in popularity thanks to its laid-back lifestyle, natural beauty including volcanoes and national parks, as well as wildlife such as whale and dolphin watching.

In July 2022, the number of passengers arriving in the Azores hit its highest level in five years, with 252,483 passengers landing at the region’s airports*.

Greece also has had a good year, seeing a big resurgence in visitors during summer 2022.

Yet, although Northern Greece is less-visited than the south of the mainland and the ever-popular Greek islands, it has much to offer.

The Halkidiki Peninsula is a stunning part of Greece, with its ‘three fingers,’ which extend from the mainland out into the Aegean Sea, while Northern Greece as a whole is rich with heavy influences found throughout from its Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman past.

World Travel Market London Exhibition Director, Juliette Losardo, said:
“The Azores, with its natural beauty and commitment to sustainability, and Northern Greece, with some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes and historical settings, rightly take their places at the top of the list of the most underrated destinations in the world.”

The top-10 most underrated destinations according to the survey are:

Azores (14.5%)
Northern Greece (14%)
Bulgaria (10%)
Scotland (10%)
Estonia (9.5%)
Netherlands (9%)
Sicily (9%)
Slovenia (9%)
Wales (8%)
Bratislava (7%)

WTM Poll – Cost of living challenge for travel in 2023

WTM Poll - Cost of living challenge for travel in 2023

WTM Poll – Cost of living challenge for travel in 2023

08 November 2022

The soaring cost of living around the world is by far the greatest threat to travel businesses in 2023, according to WTM London research.

A poll of travel professionals asked: “Which of the following is most likely to affect your business negatively in 2023?” and almost half (44.8%) cited ‘cost of living generally’.

The price of petrol was cited by 13.4%, while energy prices were a concern for one in ten respondents (9.6%).

Taken together, the cost of living plus petrol and energy prices, these responses amounted to more than two thirds of those surveyed (67.8%).

The war in Ukraine was cited by just over one in ten (11.9%), while other issues were mentioned by smaller proportions of the respondents – increased Covid rates (5.4%); 2022 chaos at airports (4.2%); climate change (2.3%); Brexit (1.9%); and enhanced border checks (1.1%).

The survey reflects warnings by the World Travel & Tourism Council about the industry’s global bounce-back being at risk from economic headwinds.

In September, the WTTC highlighted the challenges to the G20 Tourism Ministers, saying collaboration between the public and private sector is needed now more than ever.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President and CEO, pressed home the message, saying that rising energy prices, cost of living, labour shortages, airspace restrictions and climate change “all threaten the full of recovery of our sector”.

In the UK, the government pledged to cap energy bills for consumers and businesses over the winter but fears about tough economic times remained as recessions loomed across Europe, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its squeeze on natural gas supplies.

Sterling tumbled to a record low in the wake of the UK’s mini-budget and package of tax cuts – exacerbating the cost-of-living concerns and making spending overseas more expensive for Brits.

Juliette Losardo, Exhibition Director at World Travel Market London, said:

“Assistance with energy bills has offered some reassurance for consumers and businesses but we’re still facing a grim winter, especially as so many travel firms have been devastated by the pandemic disruption.

“Soaring fuel prices will hit the price of holidays, while inflation will eat away at families’ disposable income – meaning leisure travel may be unaffordable for some, especially at the budget end of the market.

“However, experience has shown us that consumers are keen to prioritise spending on holidays, especially as they have been hit by lockdowns in 2020 and 2021.

“Many of our sessions at WTM will help delegates navigate these choppy waters ahead and seize the opportunities that are out there to emerge stronger in 2023 and beyond.”

The WTM London trade survey quizzed 210 travel industry professionals from around the world. The consumer survey had 2,000 respondents.

Vibe Hotel Singapore Orchard, the first Vibe Hotel to open outside of Australia

November 8, 2022 –

Vibe Hotel Singapore Orchard, the first Vibe Hotel to open outside of Australia, has officially opened. Managed by Far East Hospitality, a leading operator of hotels and serviced residences in Southeast Asia and joint venture partner in TFE Hotels, Vibe Singapore Orchard promises a social space for guests to connect with work, like-minded guests and travellers, and the local area.

Vibe Hotel Singapore Orchard

The lifestyle hotel offers 256 rooms across five room categories (Superior, Deluxe, Premier, Family, Suites) alongside a Lobby Bar, Pool Bar and ROOS all-day dining restaurant. Located in the residential enclave of Orchard Road, within easy access to Singapore’s longest shopping belt, the hotel caters to travellers looking for a hotel that provides a welcome retreat amidst contemporary design.

TFE Hotels’ Group Chief Operating Officer, Chris Sedgwick, said whilst Singapore’s newest Vibe was firmly rooted in the pillars of “Lifestyle”, “Connection” and “Discovery”, guests could expect some distinctly Australian touches throughout the property.

“From the friendly Australian-style hospitality on arrival to the premium Penfolds wine range and Australian-inspired dishes ROOS to the O&M amenities and the Vibe pantry in room, there are Aussie touches at every point,” he said.

The hotel’s outdoor swimming pool serves as a space for guests to enjoy an outdoor barbecue with friends and family in typical Australian fashion, while keeping up with the latest on Aussie sports on the big screen at the Pool Bar.

Far East Hospitality’s Senior Vice President, Commercial, Gill Ishwinder, said the relationship between Singapore and Australia was a very close-knit one.

“As the first Vibe property to open outside of Australia, Vibe Singapore Orchard offers the best of both worlds – enabling local guests to experience a taste of Australia served up by the hotel’s friendly staff members, while allowing overseas visitors a trusted and familiar friend who can tell them what’s good to see, do or eat whilst in Singapore.”

Mr Ishwinder said a huge focus had placed on facilitating community and cultural immersion through a program called Vibe Discovery, featuring Discover Hidden Gems, Private Home Dining and Vibe Recommends — a series of carefully curated activities and in-house programmes by Vibe Singapore centred on unique and authentic hyperlocal experiences.

– Under Discover Hidden Gems, a Vibe Guide will take guests on an eye-opening and mouth-watering food tour, giving them a peek (and taste) of hidden gems around Singapore. A photographer by profession but foodie by nature, the Vibe Guide will make guests feel immediately at home, much like a familiar friend showing them delicious secrets around the neighbourhood. Guests will also pick up a couple of food photography tips along the way.

– Private Home Dining will welcome guests deep into the heartlands with the flavours of various home-made dishes across different cuisines prepared by private home dining chefs, reflective of the quintessential Singaporean way of life. Discover Hidden Gems and Private Home Dining experiences are available for Vibe guests to book at a nominal fee.

– Finally, Vibe Recommends will act as a comprehensive digital local guide to the endless possibilities of what to do and where to go in Singapore, including curated round-the-clock itineraries and exclusive perks for guests of Vibe Singapore

COP 27 - World’s Largest Gathering Opens With Degree Of Climate Urgency

COP 27 – World’s Largest Gathering Opens With Degree Of Climate Urgency

07 November 2022

Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt):  World’s largest annual gathering of leaders for the UN Climate Change Conference COP27 opened on Sunday with the key aim of ensuring full implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Discussions at COP27 begin near the end of a year that has seen devastating floods and unprecedented heat waves, severe droughts and formidable storms, all unequivocal signs of the unfolding climate emergency.

At the same time, millions of people throughout the world are confronting the impact of simultaneous crises in energy, food, water and cost of living, aggravated by severe geopolitical conflicts and tensions.

In this adverse context, some countries have begun to stall or reverse climate policies and doubled down on fossil fuel use.

COP27 is also taking place against the backdrop of inadequate ambition to curb greenhouse gas emissions. According to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, CO2 emissions need to be cut 45 per cent by 2030, compared to 2010 levels to meet the central Paris Agreement goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of this century.

This is crucial to avoid the worst impact of climate change, including more frequent and severe droughts, heatwaves and rainfall.

Climate urgency

A report published by UN Climate Change ahead of COP27 shows that while countries are bending the curve of global greenhouse gas emissions downward, efforts remain insufficient to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

Since COP26 in Glasgow, only 29 of the 194 countries came forward with tightened national plans.

“With the Paris Rulebook essentially concluded thanks to COP26 in Glasgow last year, the litmus test of this and every future COP is how far deliberations are accompanied by action. Everybody, every single day, everywhere in the world, needs to do everything they possibly can to avert the climate crisis,” said UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell.

“COP27 sets out a new direction for a new era of implementation where outcomes from the formal and informal process truly begin to come together to drive greater climate progress — and accountability for that progress,” Stiell added.

In his opening address, the UN Climate Change Executive Secretary asked governments to focus on three critical areas at COP27. The first is a transformational shift to implementation of the Paris Agreement and putting negotiations into concrete actions.

The second is cementing progress on the critical workstreams of mitigation, adaptation, finance and loss and damage, while stepping up finance notably to tackle the impact of climate change.

The third is enhancing the delivery of the principles of transparency and accountability throughout the UN Climate Change process.

The Egyptian COP27 Presidency has set out an ambitious vision for this COP that puts human needs at the heart of the global efforts to address climate change.

The Presidency intends to focus the world’s attention on key elements that address some of the most fundamental needs of people everywhere, including water, food, health and energy security.

Sameh Shoukry, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and COP27 President, said: “We’re gathering this year at a time when global climate action is at a watershed moment. Multilateralism is being challenged by geopolitics, spiralling prices, and growing financial crises, while several countries battered by the pandemic have barely recovered, and severe and depleting climate change-induced disasters are becoming more frequent.”

“COP27 creates a unique opportunity in 2022 for the world to unite, to make multilateralism work by restoring trust and coming together at the highest levels to increase our ambition and action in fighting climate change. COP27 must be remembered as the ‘Implementation COP’ — the one where we restore the grand bargain that is at the centre of the Paris Agreement.”

Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, has called on member countries to uphold global climate change commitments and take decisive action to tackle the gaps in implementation.

At the summit, the Secretary-General will advocate for ramped-up climate action through more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions, national plans and targets.

She will also seek to amplify the shared concerns of the 56 Commonwealth countries, including crucial issues around climate finance, sustainable energy transition, loss and damage, and partnerships and coordinated action.

the hottest curry in the world?

the hottest curry in the world

the hottest curry in the world?

Did you know that arguably the hottest curry in the world is prepared by a chef wearing a gas mask?

Brick Lane Curry House is known for having one of the spiciest curry dishes in the world.

the hottest curry in the world?

Phaal curry is a British-Indian dish known to be the hottest in the world, and at Brick Lane Curry House it’s so hot that thex chef has to wear a gas mask while making it to not choke on the spicy fumes released. Their website even describes the order as:

“An excruciatingly hot curry, more pain and sweat than flavor. For our customers who do this on a dare, we require you to state a verbal disclaimer not holding us liable for any physical or emotional damage after eating the curry.”

The dish is created using about 10 to 12 ground chili peppers, including the hottest one—Carolina Reaper. Once finished and served it has a heat of about 2.2 million Scoville! (For reference, jalapeños range from 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville…so if you find jalapeños too spicy then you may want to sit this challenge out.)

Recipe – try at your own risk!

1 pound chicken breast, chopped (or use lamb)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 ghost peppers, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1/4 cup chopped green onions
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tablespoon finely chopped ginger
and here is the rest….

The richness and diversity of ancestral cooking styles, combined with contemporary culinary techniques, has helped shape his modern interpretation of Indian gastronomy – an approach that saw Masque named Best Restaurant in India in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants guide for 2022.

As part of a profound dedication to sustainability, the restaurant is supplied only by local farmers and producers.

This blend of old and new can also be experienced through the property’s approach to drinks as well as food: start with a cocktail inspired by Ayurvedic philosophy in the Living Room, the restaurant’s cozy bar. The Masque Lab is also available for private events.
