COP 27 – World’s Largest Gathering Opens With Degree Of Climate Urgency

COP 27 - World’s Largest Gathering Opens With Degree Of Climate Urgency

COP 27 – World’s Largest Gathering Opens With Degree Of Climate Urgency

07 November 2022

Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt):  World’s largest annual gathering of leaders for the UN Climate Change Conference COP27 opened on Sunday with the key aim of ensuring full implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Discussions at COP27 begin near the end of a year that has seen devastating floods and unprecedented heat waves, severe droughts and formidable storms, all unequivocal signs of the unfolding climate emergency.

At the same time, millions of people throughout the world are confronting the impact of simultaneous crises in energy, food, water and cost of living, aggravated by severe geopolitical conflicts and tensions.

In this adverse context, some countries have begun to stall or reverse climate policies and doubled down on fossil fuel use.

COP27 is also taking place against the backdrop of inadequate ambition to curb greenhouse gas emissions. According to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, CO2 emissions need to be cut 45 per cent by 2030, compared to 2010 levels to meet the central Paris Agreement goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of this century.

This is crucial to avoid the worst impact of climate change, including more frequent and severe droughts, heatwaves and rainfall.

Climate urgency

A report published by UN Climate Change ahead of COP27 shows that while countries are bending the curve of global greenhouse gas emissions downward, efforts remain insufficient to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

Since COP26 in Glasgow, only 29 of the 194 countries came forward with tightened national plans.

“With the Paris Rulebook essentially concluded thanks to COP26 in Glasgow last year, the litmus test of this and every future COP is how far deliberations are accompanied by action. Everybody, every single day, everywhere in the world, needs to do everything they possibly can to avert the climate crisis,” said UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell.

“COP27 sets out a new direction for a new era of implementation where outcomes from the formal and informal process truly begin to come together to drive greater climate progress — and accountability for that progress,” Stiell added.

In his opening address, the UN Climate Change Executive Secretary asked governments to focus on three critical areas at COP27. The first is a transformational shift to implementation of the Paris Agreement and putting negotiations into concrete actions.

The second is cementing progress on the critical workstreams of mitigation, adaptation, finance and loss and damage, while stepping up finance notably to tackle the impact of climate change.

The third is enhancing the delivery of the principles of transparency and accountability throughout the UN Climate Change process.

The Egyptian COP27 Presidency has set out an ambitious vision for this COP that puts human needs at the heart of the global efforts to address climate change.

The Presidency intends to focus the world’s attention on key elements that address some of the most fundamental needs of people everywhere, including water, food, health and energy security.

Sameh Shoukry, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and COP27 President, said: “We’re gathering this year at a time when global climate action is at a watershed moment. Multilateralism is being challenged by geopolitics, spiralling prices, and growing financial crises, while several countries battered by the pandemic have barely recovered, and severe and depleting climate change-induced disasters are becoming more frequent.”

“COP27 creates a unique opportunity in 2022 for the world to unite, to make multilateralism work by restoring trust and coming together at the highest levels to increase our ambition and action in fighting climate change. COP27 must be remembered as the ‘Implementation COP’ — the one where we restore the grand bargain that is at the centre of the Paris Agreement.”

Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, has called on member countries to uphold global climate change commitments and take decisive action to tackle the gaps in implementation.

At the summit, the Secretary-General will advocate for ramped-up climate action through more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions, national plans and targets.

She will also seek to amplify the shared concerns of the 56 Commonwealth countries, including crucial issues around climate finance, sustainable energy transition, loss and damage, and partnerships and coordinated action.

the hottest curry in the world?

the hottest curry in the world?

Did you know that arguably the hottest curry in the world is prepared by a chef wearing a gas mask?

Brick Lane Curry House is known for having one of the spiciest curry dishes in the world.

the hottest curry in the world?

Phaal curry is a British-Indian dish known to be the hottest in the world, and at Brick Lane Curry House it’s so hot that thex chef has to wear a gas mask while making it to not choke on the spicy fumes released. Their website even describes the order as:

“An excruciatingly hot curry, more pain and sweat than flavor. For our customers who do this on a dare, we require you to state a verbal disclaimer not holding us liable for any physical or emotional damage after eating the curry.”

The dish is created using about 10 to 12 ground chili peppers, including the hottest one—Carolina Reaper. Once finished and served it has a heat of about 2.2 million Scoville! (For reference, jalapeños range from 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville…so if you find jalapeños too spicy then you may want to sit this challenge out.)

Recipe – try at your own risk!

1 pound chicken breast, chopped (or use lamb)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 ghost peppers, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1/4 cup chopped green onions
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tablespoon finely chopped ginger
and here is the rest….

4 new members of Relais Chateaux

November 4, 2022 –  4 new members of Relais Chateaux – find out which ones below!

4 new members of Relais Chateaux join our collection

India, Ecuador, France and Spain each welcome new properties to the Relais & Châteaux collection.

Masque Restaurant, Mumbai, India
Housed in a former textile factory in Mumbai, Masque restaurant is run by young chef Varun Totlani. Having explored different Indian terroirs and immersed himself in the contrasts between local tastes and traditions, he has unearthed a treasure trove of indigenous cuisine. The richness and diversity of ancestral cooking styles, combined with contemporary culinary techniques, has helped shape his modern interpretation of Indian gastronomy – an approach that saw Masque named Best Restaurant in India in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants guide for 2022.

As part of a profound dedication to sustainability, the restaurant is supplied only by local farmers and producers.

This blend of old and new can also be experienced through the property’s approach to drinks as well as food: start with a cocktail inspired by Ayurvedic philosophy in the Living Room, the restaurant’s cozy bar. The Masque Lab is also available for private events.

4 new members of Relais Chateaux – the first cruise!

MV Evolve, Galápagos, Ecuador (first cruises in January 2023)
The MV Evolve is a new boat that joins the Ecoventura cruise collection and which is set to travel through the Galapagos, a natural archipelago listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vessel is Rainforest Alliance Best Practices-certified, recognizing Ecoventura’s participation in social action programs and in protecting the region’s unique biodiversity. Admire flora and fauna, led by a naturalist guide, or viewed from the large panoramic windows of your cabin. The celebration of nature continues in the restaurant, where the chef gives pride of place to organic produce from local farmers spread across the archipelago.

La Nauve Hôtel & Jardin, Cognac, France (opening Easter 2023)
A four-hectare park comprising vegetable garden, a vast stone fishery, two dovecotes and French-style formal gardens make for a bucolic setting at La Nauve Hôtel & Jardin. A former 19th century distillery in Cognac, this charming hotel has direct access to The Charente river, allowing guests to reach the center of town by boat. Enjoying the silence, soaking up the poetry of the place and staying in the comfort of one of its rooms or suites of this house. The architecture honors local materials, notable in the impressive double spiral staircase rendered in Avy stone. In the restaurant, savor fine cuisine prepared by a chef who is inspired by surrounding nature and a champion of local products.

Le Cap Menorca, Llucalari, Balearic Islands, Spain (opening June 2023)
Classified as a ‘World Biosphere Reserve’ by UNESCO, the island of Menorca and its Mediterranean landscapes is home to Le Cap Menorca. Air New Zealand Service To New York

Air New Zealand Service To New York Avoids Stopover

Air New Zealand Service To New York

Air New Zealand Service To New York Avoids Stopover

November 02, 2022 –

Passengers from New York to Auckland on Air New Zealand were informed of a stopover; however, the airline has since confirmed that the trip would go as planned and will fly the entire distance without stopping.

When Air New Zealand first announced that NZ1 would stop in Nadi, Fiji, it was because of high headwinds.

Air New Zealand Service To New York

This is not the first time the new service, the world’s fourth-longest, has encountered issues with its nonstop promise, with a prior flight requiring 15 passengers to disembark to save weight. Another removed luggage and rebooked it on another flight.

Critics have argued that the 787-9’s range isn’t sufficient for a 16- or 17-hour flight if the plane has to make a little detour due to unforeseen circumstances.

The A350-1000s that Qantas plans to deploy for its Project Sunrise flights to New York and London have a range of nearly 18,000 km, but the 787-9s’ maximum range is only 14,010 km.

Because of the “combination of high headwinds created by jet streams and turbulence across the USA,” Air New Zealand’s chief operating officer Alex Marren confirmed that the planned route would include the fuel stopover.

“Our number one goal is to get our guests to their destinations safely,” Marren said. NZ1 will arrive in Auckland five hours later than scheduled because of a brief stop in Nadi to refuel and change over the crew.

The flight, which the company had previously referred to as a “gas and go,” would have been the first to require a stop since it began service in September if the layover had gone as planned.

Even though Air New Zealand launched the service with much enthusiasm and gave the 17-hour flight from New York to Auckland the prestigious ‘NZ1′ flight number and the 16-hour flight back from Auckland to New York the NZ2 flight number, the airline has had some embarrassing issues.

Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran called New York City “one of the world’s greatest cities,” adding that the company was “glad to add the Big Apple” to its list of 29 international destinations.

Expanding our East Coast service is wonderful news for our North American customers since it opens up a world of possibilities that includes New Zealand, the Pacific, and Australia.

A total of seven U.S. and Canadian cities are accessible, with Chicago starting yesterday and joining Honolulu, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, and New York.

Qantas will launch a new service between Australia and New York City via Auckland, utilising the same 787-9s on14 June next year.

The Flying Kangaroo, on the other hand, cited a previous promise that the planes it had on order would be built “with greater room and fewer seats than most of our competitors.” The cabins aboard the Dreamliner are described as being “ideally adapted to longer international flights.”

Qantas’ 15-hour flight from Perth to Rome was made on the same plane.

The first port of call is Hydra. A beautiful small island, yet so great in history that stands out among many others ! Elegance, tradition and majesty.

These are the three key -words that point out the beauty and significance of the island, that goes beyond what meets the eye. The cobblestone streets on the island, where donkeys are the primary mode of transportation, are lined with aristocratic mansions, forts, and churches steeped in history.

Hydra, the ancient Hydrea , is a long narrow island, with inhospitable shores, largely barren of vegetation and short of water. Everywhere mountainous, it rises to 590 m in Mt Klimaki. Most of its 2387 inhabitants are concentrated in its only town. There are no motor vehicles. Since its discovery as a location for film -making, the island has become a fashionable artists’ colony and retreat of intellectuals and has attracted also a less orthodox fringe.

Right after Poros, we will be visiting the island of Aegina, the land of legendary Achilles! Aegina, the island of pistachios, is the largest island of the Saronic Gulf and is the favourite holiday ‘refuge’ of the Athenians, as well as a preferred island of tourists.

Entering the port, one can enjoy the okra and pink shades of the traditional Greek houses, and the busy life of summer and winter.

The world famous temple of Aphaia (Athena) imposes at the top of a pine-covered hill in the northeastern part of Aegina. On a clear day, one can see the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion and the Acropolis of Athens from the site of Aphaia. These three temples form the ‘holy triangle’ of the ancient times. On the island there is also the church of Saint Nectarios, which is one of the largest in the Balkans and contains a silver urn with the relics of St. Nectarios, the patron saint of the island

Carnival of Barranquilla 2023

November 1, 2022 – In Colombia, every year in February the Carnival of Barranquilla takes place. Declared by the UNESCO as a World Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003, the carnival is a meeting place for some of the most emblematic expressions of memory and identity of the people of Barranquilla where more than 140 folk groups, singers and artists come together.

Carnival of Barranquilla 2023

In this four-day celebration there are several street parties, parades, music and dance groups, costume parties and contests.

The Carnival starts with the Battle of the Flowers Parade as a symbolic celebration of the end of the Thousand Days War, adorned by more than 1.5 million flowers, magnolias and carnations; and ends with the “death” of Joselito Carnaval.

He is a symbolic character that represents the joy of this celebration, that after 4 days of feasts without returning home and unable to wake up from being drunk, people decided to put him in a coffin and walk him around town until he wakes up and yells “I was not dead, I was celebrating”. In 2023 the Carnival will take place from February 18th to the 21st. please contact us for more details.
