Increase in business trips being booked from Belgium

The number of people travelling from Belgium for professional reasons has once again started to pick up after the coronavirus crisis resulted in a major drop in corporate travel.

Belgian airline company Brussels Airlines noted a weekly increase in bookings of 30 to 40% in the last month and is expecting companies to ease restrictions in their travel policies as of October, despite many multinationals still applying a (partial) teleworking policy.

“Brussels Airlines expects that the demand for corporate travel will reach the level of 2019 again by 2024. The demand for leisure travel on the other hand has recuperated much faster,” a press release stated.

Based on the company’s data, the sectors that started up corporate travel first are the European and other political institutions, universities and the Marine business, later followed by the automotive industry, international construction companies and building material producers and NGOs.

At the moment, European destinations, including Italy (Milan), Slovenia (due to it holding the EU Presidency), Denmark (Copenhagen), Czech Republic (Prague), Germany (Berlin) are among the most popular for business trips.

In the first 24 hours after the announcement by the United States government on Tuesday that it would be easing travel restrictions on travel from the EU, allowing vaccinated and tested travellers to enter the country again from November, the company noted a booking increase of 180% to US destinations.

However, according to a recent Wall Street Journal analysis, the continuation of business trips, at least in and from the US, between 19% and 36% of all business trips that were made before the pandemic is likely to disappear permanently, in part due to the fact that many businesses have adopted more (cost-) efficient alternatives to corporate travel.

Instead, it found that many organisations are pushing for video conference calls to replace in-person meetings and visits, also in an effort to cut carbon emissions and, at least in the short-term, to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Before the pandemic, corporate travellers usually booked their trips two to three weeks in advance, however, the Brussels’ Airlines’ customer data showed that the trend of last-minute bookings has also resulted in trips being books just two to three days before people’s departure.

September 23, 2021  – Pan Pacific Hotels Group continues to grow its global pipeline with 13 new properties across 10 key gateway cities by 2024. More than 3,300 rooms will be added to the Group’s inventory, bringing its portfolio to 48 hotels, resorts, and serviced suites across 29 cities. Pan Pacific Hotels Group’s parent UOL Group Limited is one of Asia’s most established hotel and property companies.

This move sees the Group establish its presence in key gateway cities, including London, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Dalian, Hanoi, Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap.

This expansion started from the recent openings of PARKROYAL Monash Melbourne in April and Pan Pacific London on 1 September, which will be followed by 13 other properties in the coming three years.

“We recognise that the world is saddled with the crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, in the long run, businesses and economies will be reignited through various measures. Travel for leisure and business will have to resume. The hospitality industry will recover. We are fortunate to be able to tap into UOL’s development and design capabilities and are planting our seeds for the future through strategic footprints in key gateway cities, with the view that when the skies reopen, we will be well-placed in strategic locations to take advantage of returning demand,” said Mr. Choe Peng Sum, Chief Executive Officer, Pan Pacific Hotels Group.

Freshly unveiled on 1 September is Pan Pacific London, Pan Pacific Hotels Group’s flagship hotel in Britain. With 237 keys, the mixed-use development is the pride of a dream design team: it is designed by London-based and award-winning firm PLP Architectures, with the hotel interiors helmed by Yabu Pushelberg, and Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio for its destination bar in Devonshire Row. One Bishopsgate Plaza is owned and developed by UOL

Owing to this visionary architecture, Pan Pacific London has already been awarded the “5 Star Winner for Best Hotel Construction and Design UK”, “Best Hotel Architecture London” and “Best Mixed-Use Architecture London” at the International Property Awards (UK).

Pan Pacific London is centrally seated at One Bishopsgate Plaza, a two-minute walk from Liverpool Street Station. This strategic location secures not only convenience and connectivity to the rest of London, but it also affords guests amazing views of London’s most iconic landmarks, such as the River Thames, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, The Gherkin, St. Paul’s Cathedral and Canary Wharf.

Australia plans to open its international border by Christmas

September 23, 2021 –

Australia plans to open its international border by Christmas at the latest, unwinding one of the world’s strictest controls on overseas travel since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Australians will be able to travel abroad, with no restrictions on the destination, once the vaccination rate in their respective home state hits 80 per cent, Tourism Minister Dan Tehan said at a National Press Club of Australia event on Wednesday (Sept 22).

Australia’s borders have been mostly shut to non-citizens and non-residents since March last year.

“People will be able to freely travel outside Australia with no restrictions” under the national plan governing the country’s emergence from Covid-19, Mr Tehan said. Australians would still be subject to rules governing the countries they visit.

The government is exploring opening travel bubbles with several countries to reduce quarantine time, and hopes home quarantine will be operational before Christmas, Mr Tehan said.

Hôtel Madame Rêve to Open in Paris’ Louvre Post Office Building

airline news

Travel news from around the world

Created by restaurateur, founder and art director Laurent Taïeb, Hôtel Madame Rêve is set to open its doors this October. The independent hotel will have 82 design-led rooms, including 19 suites located on the top floor, either overlooking an internal vertical sky garden or the Parisian cityscape. Star suites will offer views over well-known sights including the Eiffel Tower, the Sacré-Coeur or Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Housed in Paris’ iconic Louvre post office building in the heart of the city’s creative hub, dubbed as the “new” Golden Triangle, Madame Rêve is set to draw footfalls with designer boutiques, museums and chic restaurants on its doorstep. Located in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, the heritage building is one of the most recognizable in the city and a familiar address to Parisians for over a century. It is flanked by streets lined with cafés and galleries, such as the Pinault Collection and is located within walking distance to the Tuileries Gardens and the Louvre Museum—with whom the hotel will partner with for bespoke guest experiences.

A 10,000-square-foot roof terrace and sky garden on the fourth floor will offer 360-degree views of the cityscape and has an expansive deck where guests can sip on cocktails. The rooftop structure was inspired by pioneering engineer and architect Gustave Eiffel. Comparable to the concept of London’s Chiltern Firehouse, Madame Rêve offers the intimacy and privacy of a new-age boutique hotel.

Inspired by the travels of Taïeb, guests will have a choice of two restaurants, overseen by Chef Benjamin Six, best known from his time at modern Japanese restaurant Zuma. Mediterranean-style fare is available all day in the 19th-century café brasserie on ground level with an open-air terrace stretching out onto a private pedestrianized street, ideal for al-fresco dining. An elevator ride three stories up will take guests to the 21st-century restaurant-bar serving Japanese-influenced cuisine.

The hotel has been designed by Taïeb’s friend and interior designer Andrée Putman. In the ground floor lobby, the hotel’s 19th-century architecture and characterful design embraces its Parisian roots through thoughtful woodwork, oak flooring, velvet curtains and golden-brown hues throughout, reminiscent of the brasseries of the Riviera. As visitors move higher up the hotel, they are taken on a modern voyage through indoor gardens and wooden surroundings.

Furniture has either been custom-made or restored. Many items have been sourced by French artisans, namely Henryot & Cie 1867 whose distinctive chairs can be spotted at Le Jules Verne restaurant inside the Eiffel Tower or dotted around the Louis Vuitton Foundation art museum in Paris. Londoners may recognize the Pierre Frey fabrics, also used to dress the punchy interiors at sketch’s Parlour tearoom in Mayfair.

Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Granted “SafeBE” Certification

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre has become Malaysia’s first venue to be granted the “Safe Business Events” (SafeBE) certification, a hygiene and safety label, by Bureau Veritas.

Initiated and supported by the Business Events Council Malaysia, the certification program gained collaboration from Malaysian Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers and the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau to drive the venue certification process to create an end-to-end safe and secure event journey for organizers and participants alike. It recognizes a venue’s implementation of the government-endorsed Business Events Standard Operating Procedures and the team’s operational excellence in event management, food and hospitality service standards in the new norm.

The centre was assessed on its processes, facilities and people in order to be deemed worthy of accreditation. The assessment was based on correct implementation of equipment, tools, quality standards, team knowledge, training and expertise, in order to ensure the venue’s compliance with the assessors’ criteria and ability to operate safely in the new norm.

Alan Pryor, the venue’s general manager, said in a press release, “We want every step of the event organizer and visitor journey to instill trust and assurance in our venue, team and the destination. This is part of our broader strategy for business recovery and continuity, as well as our mission to increase public and business confidence in the international standards of venue operations in Malaysia. We highly recommend that other venues undertake this certification program to elevate the country’s attractive value proposition and profile as a safe destination for business events.”

Last year, the Malaysian Association of Hotel and Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents initiated a similar safety certification standard, the “Clean and Safe Malaysia” and “Travel Safe Malaysia: Hygiene Excellence and Safety Label,” respectively. With the business events industry also embarking on this path, Malaysia’s tourism and hospitality industry is set to welcome back event delegates and visitors safely.

Global sports tourism expected to keep growing

airline news

Travel news from around the world
More travel news

At a time when tourism begins to recover from the COVID-19 impact, the sport industry is set to become one of the main players in the next decade. The global sports tourism industry expects to grow an average of 16.1% a year between 2021 and 2030 according to a study by Allied Market Research, stating that this industry will generate approximately 1.5 trillion euros, five times more than in 2020.

The increase in GDP and its contribution to employment, the popularity of sports tourism to break the monotonous lifestyle, the introduction of apps for ticket sales, and the increase in spending capacity are driving the world market for sports tourism.

The study recognizes that the industry took a hit after the pandemic due to the cancellation of sports events and border closures, and predicts the market will recover in 2022 thanks to the mass vaccination. In addition, the study pointed out that racing events like Formula 1 and Grand Prix motorcycle are the main drivers of the industry. This type of events is expected to grow 17.4% on average every year.

In 2020, US$323,400 million were generated by the sports industry. By type, the domestic travel segment dominated the market in terms of revenue, accounting for almost 60% of the global sports tourism market due to heavy investments in sports infrastructure and the popularity of the events in various countries.

However, the international market is expected to show a higher average annual growth from 2021 until 2030, with an annual increase of 16.8% in the next decade due to the increase in disposable income, the improvement of infrastructure, favourable government policies for international tourists, and the relations between host countries and fans interested in traveling.

Last year, Europe had the highest share of travel for sports-related reasons, followed by North America. In 2020, Europe held 40% of the market due to a high population interested in traveling to see or play sports. Now in 2021, the highest growth is expected to be recorded in the Asia-Pacific region, with an average annual growth of 17.7%. However, due to the pandemic in 2020, this industry generated much less than in 2019, for example, the decline of sports tourism in Spain was 81.6%, which means that 3,740 million euros were lost over the pandemic. It is not a minor issue for the country, since trips to watch soccer, tennis, Formula 1 and Grand Prix motorcycle are its main drivers.

Turkey – the rising star in medical tourism

airline news

Travel news from around the world
More travel news

blank

According to Patient Beyond Borders, Turkey is among the top 10 destinations for medical tourism. Home to ancient and scenic natural wonders, Turkey is also famous for its healthcare infrastructure. Being close to Western Europe, Turkey has been medical tourism hotspot for many Europeans seeking affordable cosmetic surgeries. Hair transplant in Turkey has been continuously gaining popularity.

There are many reasons why Turkey has become the rising star of medical tourism. The travelling distances to Turkey from the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Africa, makes it possible for people to cut costs. But it isn’t just about that. Despite the lower costs, the quality of procedures offered is world-class.

Affordable Treatment Packages

While earning $1.5 billion from medical tourism in 2018, Turkey received around 700,000 medical tourists, according to the Turkish Health Minister. The reason for this huge influx of medical tourists is that many people in their home countries are unable to afford the treatment. That is why they consider going to other countries to get the same procedure done.

The quality of the procedure offered isn’t sacrificed because of the lower cost. The cost is low because of the Turkish economy itself. The exchange rate and low cost of living make many things seem very cheap to foreigners.

Moreover, the minimum wage is lower in Turkey, which results in cheaper labour costs. This means that surgery in Turkey will cost less than it will, say, in Western Europe. Moreover, having cosmetic surgery or a hair transplant is not available on National Health Service (NHS) in the UK.

No Long Wait Lists

Once you book a treatment package in Turkey, you can get the procedure done in a matter of a day(s). However, in the UK, waitlists can be so long that you might have to wait for almost 2 years to get some procedures done. So, if you want to get treatment without further delays, you can get it in Turkey.

Many people also find the aspect of including the procedure in their vacation time quite appealing. Turkey is a popular tourist destination, which is why many people can relax after or before getting their treatment. If you’re also avoiding unnecessary questions about the surgery by your colleagues, it’s a good idea to get the treatment and recover for a while in Turkey.

International Standard Surgeons & Hospitals

One of the most important things when it comes to seeking healthcare services in another country is whether or not the medical facilities and surgeons there are well-qualified. In Turkey, you’ll find many internationally accredited facilities staffed with highly skilled medical professionals offering top-of-the-line services.

Equipped with the latest medical technology, the country’s healthcare infrastructure is on the path of constant improvement following the government private-public-partnership (PPP) model.

Although the medical tourism sector was negatively impacted by the coronavirus, the gradual resumption of normal activities has led to a surge in demand for cosmetic surgeries yet again. And because the medical facilities in Turkey ensure that they uphold all the necessary safety standards, patients feel safe getting surgery even during the pandemic.

Namibia Hosea Kutako Airport Upgrade is nearing completion. Airports Company (NAC) spokesperson Dan Kamati has announced that rehabilitation work will be finished shortly. This, according to sources, will give the country’s tourism business a new face.

The country’s main international airport is Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital.

According to Xinhua, Kamati stated that the true completion date for the congestion reduction project is September 30, 2021. According to a NAC spokeswoman, the country’s major airport is being expanded to match international standards set by other airport terminals worldwide. He said that the airport extension will help improve the country’s image among visitors at a time when tourism is suffering because of the COVID epidemic.

According to the Nambian, the Hosea Kutako Airport Upgrade will include specialised equipment such as luggage handling and baggage claims and will be authorised and operationalised by the end of next month. The proposal also involves developing terminal facilities for domestic, VIP, and VVIP planes. Nexus Contractors is working on this project with other 100% Namibian-owned subcontracting and consulting firms.

The NAC has contributed around N$95 million to the construction budget, with the remainder coming from the national government. The project aimed to triple the airport’s processing capacity in order to manage growing passenger volume. An extra 18 check-in desks and five self-service check-in kiosks will be installed, as will departure security checkpoint stations and baggage reclamation facilities.

According to the Namibian, the project also includes expanding the departure lounge and increasing the number of departure immigration offices from three to seven to handle increased passenger traffic at the airport. Arrivals will benefit from a redesigned departure lounge with more moving room and 17 immigration desks, up from the existing eight.

The baggage reclaims corridor will be extended, and three additional conveyor belts will be added, increasing the total number of conveyor belts to five. According to Dan Kamati, nearly four airlines have expressed interest in restarting flights to Windhoek.

(Safe) comeback of the MICE/event industry

airline news

Travel news from around the world
More travel news

Upcoming mega events like the Expo Dubai or the World Travel Market in London, give proof that the global meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions or MICE industry celebrates a cautious comeback. Despite ongoing worries about booster vaccines and the delta variant of Covid-19, there are multiple ways to keep social mass gatherings secure for everyone.

It could have been the comeback summer for mega-events with real humans after a -year long hiatus. But neither the Euro football championships nor the Summer Olympics in Tokyo could keep their promises of holding safe games, unfortunately. The tournament’s final in London’s Wembley Stadium became a super-spreader amid 60,000 football aficionados, triggering a surge in the spread of the delta variant in the UK.

And Nippon saw despite a global sports spectacle sans fans a rebound of new COVID-19 infections too. Other major international events like the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos or the Paris air show had to be cancelled in 2021. By March 2020, the events industry had already lost $16.5bn, according to UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, and the global tourism industry witness a fall of around 74% in international tourist arrival during the pandemic.

Good-bye zoom calls, hello conferences!
However these setbacks do not discourage the big shots of the global MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions) industry from going ahead with their very own plans in the coming months. Researchfive.com has reported the global MICE industry is anticipated to hit U$1,619.3 billion in the 2021–2028 period, growing from $1,007.2 billion in 2020 and representing a healthy 5.9% per year growth rate. Examples of upcoming events around the corner are:

  • The six month World Expo in Dubai will kick off on October 1st after the event had to be postponed last year due to the pandemic. Lasting until April 30 2022, Expo Dubai (slogan: Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”) expects 25 million visitors to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). But Dr. Nasser Saïdi, a leading Dubai-based economist has judged this projection as “ somewhat too optimistic” amid ongoing travel restrictions globally and prevailing uncertainty among travellers.
  • The global real state congress MIPM in Cannes has held its first post-pandemic gathering of property experts and architecture industry in early September.
  • Under the slogan “Reconnect and Rebuild” the international air transport body IATA invites industry pundit and delegates to the Global Airport, Passenger & Accessibility Symposium to Prague, Czech Republic from 15 – 18 November.
  • The World Travel Market (WTM) in London hopes to inject to the global tourism industry a booster shot by hosting the hotel chains, airliners, and tour operators, and country pavilions from 1-3 November at ExCeL Centre London.

Keep it clean
All events have one thing in common: they hope to bank on the FOMO (fear of missing out) effect. In order to keep events safe and sound, several measures have to be implemented and monitored:

  • Functioning electronic devices which guarantee a smooth entry for delegates with the required QR code to proof they are tested negatively or vaccinated (in France even dining in a café or restaurant currently requires the QR code).
  • Obligation to wear a mask which covers mouth and nose at all times.
  • Placing of hand sanitizers at entry and exit points as well at every booth, seating or stage.
  • Installation of thermal cameras at arrival points to check the temperature of visitors before entry to the site.
  • Physical distancing measures. At least 1 meter or better 1.5 meters of distance shall be kept between visitors and delegates encouraged by markings on the floor and by appropriate seating schemes. These distancing rules shall be monitored by security personnel.
  • Limiting the numbers of visitors per day by implementing a pre-registration scheme available on smart phones.
  • Assurance of appropriate medical and emergency facilities onsite.
  • Strict control of health pass or vaccination status, e. g. in France only visitors with a negative antigenic test or proof a double vaccination with an approved dose by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Astra-Zeneca, or Johnson and Johnson (vaccinations by Sputnik or Sinopharm are not accepted in France or any other EU country)
  • Strict distancing of chairs and tables at kiosks, coffee shops, or restaurants onsite.

Aside from these relatively known (and hopefully respected) measures, other initiatives are supportive to keep the spread of the tenacious Sars-COV-2 virus too. These implementations include the technological support in keeping the pandemic at bay.

  • Contactless payment terminals at entry gates, eateries, and booths (in case instant product sales are possible), and for food delivery boys and girls who walk around and sell drinks and sandwiches.
  • A dense cleaning scheme which ensures that door handles, handrails, and buttons are disinfected on a regular basis.
  • Automatic door opening systems shall be used in order to limit the need to open doors by hand.
  • Regular cleaning of eateries and hygienic facilities at the MICE venue.

While these additional instruments translate into a higher cost base for arenas and event managers, they are the grease towards a step by step comeback of the MICE industry. Word of mouth by happy delegates will raise the reputation of a congress or cultural happening and ultimately lead to more delegates, sponsors, business partners in the post-pandemic era.

Uphill struggle
Michael Rennschmied, CEO of global conference organizer coliseum-online.com, which does both virtual and physical conferences, said that he expects events in the late 2021 and early 2022 to benefit mostly from their domestic markets due to ongoing travel restrictions. Example: the UAE remains on the UK’s amber list of countries which means that a visitor from London to the Expo Dubai can visit the event but he or she must quarantine upon return for seven days which makes the trip rather unattractive.

“If you want a high number of delegates (if permitted) you need to intensively source the local market (same country),” Rennschmied told Nets Switzerland. He added: “The era for online events is not over yet, but in 2022 everyone should go back to live events. As of now, there are too many uncertainties in relation to travel restrictions and quarantine requirements. Events work more on a local basis at the moment and on a lower scale than pre-pandemic.” In fact, Event organizers reported that 23.6% of their events in 2021 will include a virtual component and will be smaller local events. They will have less than 25 attendees who do not need to travel by air or stay in hotel rooms, according to AMEX.

The World Tourism Organization has found that of the total 10 billion pre-pandemic travels, around 14% accounted for business travel. Bearing in mind that business travelling is about “the art of the deal” which creates investments, jobs, and opportunities, the imminent rebound of the MICE industry can function like a nudge effect for the world economy after Covid-19.

Cathedral of Notre Dame Is Stabilized, Ready for Renovation

The images were horrific and heartbreaking.

The Cathedral of Notre Dame, one of Paris’ most popular tourist attractions and one of the holiest sites among Catholics in the world, caught on fire two years ago. The blaze was so bad that it was doubtful whether the structure would survive long enough to be rebuilt and renovated.

So call it a miracle, if you must, but it appears Notre Dame will be saved.

The government agency overseeing the reconstruction announced in a statement Saturday that the works to secure the structure — which began the day after the April 15, 2019 fire — are at last complete and the cathedral is stabilized, according to the Associated Press.

Carpenters, scaffolding experts, professional climbers, organ mechanics and others took part in the effort, which included special temporary structures to secure the iconic towers, vaults and walls of the huge roofless structure, and a special “umbrella” to protect it from the weather.

Negotiations will now begin with companies bidding to take part in the mammoth reconstruction effort, the statement said. It will include some 100 different tenders for various projects. Work to restore the organ will begin in the fall, with other works expected to begin in the winter.

France’s President, Emmanuel Macron, has said he would like to be able to allow visitors back into the cathedral by 2024, the year Paris hosts the Olympics.

The Gozo Tourism Association welcomes the Prime Minister’s pledge to create an air link service between Gozo and Malta. (21 Sept 2021)

Gozo’s tourism operators have welcomed Prime Minister Robert Abela’s pledge to have an air link between Gozo and Malta.

The Gozo Tourism Association said on Monday that “one of its connectivity measures proposed along the years is on course to be realised”.

The association welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment, including the promise that no agricultural land will be taken up to create an airstrip.

On Saturday, Abela told a session of the Labour Party’s general conference in Għajnsielem his government was committed to set up an air link between the islands. He added the development will not only mean better accessibility but also help create niche economic sectors in Gozo linked to aviation such as pilot training and drone research.

The GTA agreed that an air link could serve as a catalyst for new economic activities.

It also welcomed Abela’s commitment to have a new fourth Gozo Channel vessel, which will be more environment friendly.

“These are all significant steps towards inter island connectivity… An all year round island tourist destination, like Gozo, can only be saleable if there are reliable, consistent, effective and cost sensitive types of connectivity from and to the mainland and from the outside world,” the GTA said.
