Thailand's famous Baya Bay reopens

January 04 2022 – Thailand’s famous Maya Bay reopens

Maya Bay is probably one of the most iconic spots in Thailand. Funnily enough, despite the immense beauty of the bay, it gained its status mainly after featuring in the movie The Beach in 2000 which starred Leonardo DiCaprio.

Throughout the years, masses of tourists visited the bay to see its beauty with their own eyes. According to estimates, at some point the spot was visited by an astonishing 6000 people per day.

The effects of overtourism

Given the fact that the bay is not exactly huge, it is clear that this situation was far from sustainable. Authorities had to deal with plenty of issues with regards to overtourism in the bay, from garbage on the beach to damages to the ecosystem, including the coral.

At some point, locals decided that enough was enough and after they expressed their dissatisfaction with the gruesome situation, Maya Bay was closed to the public in 2018.

At first the plan was to ban the public from visiting the island for 4 months. However, given that there was a lot to do to restore the ecosystem and build the necessary infrastructure for the protection of it in the future, the closure lasted much longer.

But it must be said that this closure benefited the ecosystem of the bay greatly, as it is now in much better shape than almost 4 years ago, with many animals having returned to Maya Bay in the absence of people.

Bay reopens to foreign tourists

And almost four years after, Maya Bay re-open to foreign visitors. The “doors” to the bay opened on January 1, 2022. However, visitors have to follow the introduced rules and restrictions. From the link above you can check what rules you should follow.

According to these regulations, boats are not allowed to enter the bay and tourists are dropped off at a pier behind the island. Only eight speedboats are allowed to dock here at the same time.

Moreover, tours are limited to one hour, with a maximum of 300 tourists allowed per tour. The bay “operates” from 10 am to 4 pm. Tourists are obliged to make a reservation to take part in these tours.

Finally, swimming in the seawaters of the bay is prohibited due to the fact that they are the home to 161 blacktip reef sharks. Local authorities want to preserve the population of this species whose number grew immensely since 2018 (an estimated 6 back then).

Thus, as Maya Bay re-open to foreign visitors after almost 4 years, Thailand is looking to implement a sustainable tourism model which could perhaps inspire many other destinations worldwide to follow the same path with the aim of the protection of the environment.

IHG to create first upscale international hotel in Vinh Yen – Vietnam

Crowne Plaza’s portfolio will soon be bolstered by the addition of a contemporary 170-room property in northern Vietnam.

A hotel that draws on local inspiration

Aiming to make its debut in 2022, Crowne Plaza Vinh Yen City Centre is the result of a new management agreement signed between IHG and Bao Quan Co. On opening, the 170-key scheme will accommodate guests at the heart of Vinh Yen in design-led spaces taking inspiration from local heritage and culture.

Serena Lim, vice president of development in Southeast Asia and Korea for IHG, said: “It’s fantastic to partner Bao Quan Co to bring the Crowne Plaza brand to Vinh Yen. The Covid19 pandemic has shifted the future of work, and the future of meetings, blending work and leisure needs. The desire for human connection is stronger than ever as travellers look to rebuild professional and personal relationships.

“This hotel, with its convenient location and Crowne Plaza’s work / life blend experience, is ideally placed to act as both the centre of the community and the venue where everything happens. Modern travellers and visitors will benefit from the hotel’s design, which offers a seamless transition between work and downtime. It also complements IHG’s strategy to support the governmental masterplan to grow in industrial locations.”

Flexible spaces suitable for corporate travellers

The hotel will reflect the Crowne Plaza brand’s new concept, focusing on the evolving demand for flexible spaces. Corporate travellers will be catered for by the brand’s signature Plaza Workspace lobby, an executive lounge, a business corner and agile workspace, while events will be hosted in multifunctional rooms – including an 850 sq m ballroom.

Guestrooms will be designed according to the WorkLife concept, with a quarter designed as large-format suites with kitchenettes for both long and short stays. On top of this, guests will be able to make use of two drinking and dining venues, a Club Lounge, a spa, an outdoor pool and a fitness centre.

The hotel is conveniently located just 30 minutes from Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport, and provide access to the rest of Vinh Phuc, one of the largest industrial provinces in Vietnam. This region will host part of the rescheduled 2021 Southeast Asian Games in May 2022. Nearby tourist sites include Tam Dao National Park, Truc Lam An Tam Zen Monastery and several highly rated golf courses.

Bui Xuan Trung, chairman of Bao Quan Co, said: “We chose to partner with IHG for our first venture into hotel management due to their strong local presence in Vietnam, as well as their truly global scale, enterprise and systems. Their team has been sensitive to our needs as we enter the final build stage and, together, we have made cost-effective tweaks to the existing design to bring the Crowne Plaza brand to life, while accentuating the business and meetings focus of the hotel.”

Dubai welcomes new Hyatt Centric hotel

The Hyatt Centric brand is offering a fresh spin on the modern lifestyle hotel with Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Dubai.

Encapsulating the spirit of Dubai

Lifestyle hotels typically aim to channel the essence of their location to create a unique guest offering and this certainly seems to be the case at Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Dubai. An exciting milestone for Hyatt Hotels Corporation, this property represents the inaugural Middle Eastern site for its prolific lifestyle brand.

Occupying a prime position in the La Mer district, the seven-storey hotel features 173 guestrooms, including no fewer than 27 deluxe rooms and suites.

Britta Leick-Milde, the hotel’s general manager, said: “Surrounded by the ocean with year-round sunshine and a stunning aesthetic, we are proud to introduce the tenth Hyatt-branded hotel in Dubai and to bring the first Hyatt Centric hotel into the UAE. With stunning views of the entire Dubai skyline, Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Dubai offers adventure-seeking travellers a window to the destination through a playful interpretation of local culture, art and points of interest.”

Casual, fun and playful

Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Dubai promises to provide an exciting new offering for the emirate – a lifestyle hotel that boasts a casual, fun and playful approach to hospitality.

Guestrooms are kitted out with modern amenities, livened up with splashes of colour in the form of patterned rugs, carefully curated artworks and intricate textiles. There’s also plenty for leisure travellers to do during their stay, not least visiting Laguna Waterpark, La Mer’s beachfront shopping and entertainment district, Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, or exploring the souks in the Satwa, Bur Dubai and Al Fahidi neighbourhoods.

The hotel’s also seeking to position itself as a social hub in its own right – and offers a range of F&B options for guests to choose between, from an all-day dining restaurant and shisha lounge to a lobby lounge and pool bar. Other noteworthy facilities include flexible meeting spaces, large terraces, a state-of-the-art spa and a 24-hour fitness centre, while visitors can feel like VIPs by sunbathing in a dedicated private area on La Mer’s beach.

Expo 2020

Expo 2020 reaches half-way stage

January 03 2022 – Expo 2020 reaches half-way stage

From investment deals to climate goals, cross-border collaboration to multi-national festivals, the first three months of Expo 2020 Dubai have seen a plethora of link-ups between countries, organisations and artists showing that the event is truly exemplifying its theme: Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.

The opening ceremony was an event in its own right.

In early October, Uganda signed business deals worth US$650 million while in the first two weeks of Expo 2020, Malaysia generated more than US$1.7 billion in agreements.

In October, the Brazilian state of São Paulo announced US$1.1 billion of new investment deals with the UAE and San Marino and Brazil signed a memorandum of understanding on tourism.

The United Arab Emirates’ golden jubilee celebrations in early December proved to be a boon for deals.

French president, Emmanuel Macron, visited Expo 2020 on December 3rd, meeting sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi, signing a series of agreements to benefit both France and the UAE, while Maharashtra Week resulted in US$2 billion of investment deals for the Indian state.

The Programme for People and Planet is convening global stakeholders to contribute expertise, content, and best practices to encourage international cooperation on the most pressing challenges in the world.

It has already hosted five theme weeks and sparked a raft of agreements and action-led pledges.

French president, Emmanuel Macron, was among the dignitaries to visit Expo 2020 earlier this year

Nadia Verjee, chief of Programme for People and Planet at Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “It has always been Expo’s purpose to connect minds to create a brighter future – a goal based on the belief that innovative solutions and progress are the result of people and ideas coming together in inspiring new ways.

“Expo has brought together change-makers from around the world – individuals and organisations who are working together to drive positive impact. We are thrilled to see so many tangible agreements so far, and look forward to many more collaborations, deals and alliances in the next three months.”

At Climate & Biodiversity Week from October 3-9, the UAE announced its Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative, which will see more than US$163 billion being invested in clean and renewable energy to meet the country’s mid-century target.

Staying with this theme, on November 22nd, the governments of Jordan, Israel and the UAE signed a landmark declaration, committing to building renewable electricity and water desalination capacity in the region to address the challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity.

Witnessing the signing, John Kerry, US special presidential envoy for climate, praised the deal, describing it as “a welcome example of how cooperation can accelerate the energy transition and build greater resilience to the impacts of climate change”.

John Kerry, special US presidential envoy for climate, praised UAE efforts to get to new zero on a visit to Expo 2020

At Space Week, from October 17-23, the UAE Space Agency said it would work with strategic partners to develop programmes permitting private sector investment in space.

On October 20th, the UAE Space Agency signed a memorandum of understanding with the Israel Space Agency that could see the flags of both countries planted on the moon by 2024, and provide a framework for a mutually beneficial strategic partnership to strengthen efforts to gather and analyse scientific space data.

In addition, on October 19th, Curtin University and the UAE University revealed joint plans to develop the region’s first radio array observatory in Al Ain, through a strategic research-and-development collaboration between Australia and the UAE.

During Urban & Rural Development Week, from October 31-November 6, the UN unveiled the Last Mile Delivery Roadmap – a blueprint for an inclusive, localised approach to make informal settlements safe and sustainable.

In November, during Expo’s Tolerance & Inclusivity week, the Te Aratini, a Festival of Indigenous and Tribal Ideas was hosted, the first at a World Expo.

The three-day event saw Aotearoa New Zealand collaborate with the UAE, Australia, Canada, the United States, Malaysia, Paraguay and Panama to ignite new connections and forge partnerships to address the issues facing our world today.

Expo 2020 also saw the opening of the Joint World Summit of Religions at the Italy Pavilion, which brought together scholars, clerics and intellectuals to promote dialogue between different religions.

Millions of guests have visited Expo 2020 during its first three months

Expo’s most recent theme week – focusing on Knowledge & Learning and running from December 12-18– saw a number of education agreements.

Financing for education in 37 countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, worth half a billion dollars, was agreed at the RewirEd Summit hosted by Dubai Cares on December 14th.

Called the Smart Education Financing Initiative, the programme aims to assist 28 million children who are not in school.

Expo 2020 has also witnessed an array of artistic and cultural collaborations, from a cross-continent art exhibition between Malta and the UAE; a fashion week, organised by the Mexico Pavilion that showcased designs from around the world on runways in the pavilions of Israel, Switzerland, Thailand and the USA; and a Portuguese language festival that united performers from Portugal, Angola, Brazil, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste.

The most inclusive and diverse World Expo ever, Expo 2020 runs for six months, with more fruitful collaborations expected before the event ends on March 31st.

So far more than seven million guests have passed through the turnstiles.

Sports

At Expo 2020 Dubai, you never know who you might run into.

Sports fans in particular have been in for a treat as the mega-event reaches its half-way point, with visits so far from some of the world’s biggest stars and a brand-new sports venue, opening in January, set to welcome many more sporting giants.

Earlier this month, Argentine footballer and Expo 2020 Dubai ambassador Lionel Messi – fresh from his recent move to Paris Saint-German, and also claiming his record seventh Ballon d’Or – told us what he thought of Expo.

“Something extraordinary… each pavilion has its own thing, its own place,” he said.

“It shows you its culture, its country, it makes you see and learn from each one of them.

“It’s all very big, very impressive.”

Lionel Messi showcased his star power during a visit to Expo 2020

And from one of the best footballers in the world to the globe’s fastest man, Usain Bolt dropped in just weeks earlier to host a charity fun run.

The retired Jamaican sprinter is still the world record holder in the 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m relay, and echoed Expo’s message of using sport to bring people together.

“For me, just watching sports in general, and as a sports person, it’s massive,” he said.

“One example: in Jamaica, when the Olympics is going on, the crime goes down to zero… and when the World Cup is going on, everyone is watching.

“So I feel sport plays such a big part in helping the world come together.”

With state-of-the-art sports and fitness facilities, and coaching schools with the likes of AC Milan, Manchester City and the Rajasthan Royals, there is never a shortage of sporting names visiting the Expo site.

Usain Bolt wowed crowds during a visit to the Jamaica pavilion

Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, was very impressed during his own visit: “It’s been a wonderful experience to witness the energy of grassroots football here at Expo 2020 Dubai, and to see how the club connects with people around the world.

“The enthusiasm for the game demonstrated by the next generation of aspiring players is marvellous.”

Pep Guardiola shared the secrets of his success with Manchester City fans while in Dubai

Expo has seen visits from Olympic and Paralympic athletes, Tour de France cyclists, Formula 1 drivers (and its chief executive, Stefano Domenicali), Premier League footballers, cricket legends, karate champions and the globe’s top chess players.

Talal Al Hashemi, national director of Special Olympics UAE, said: “Expo 2020 Dubai is quickly becoming a global platform to operationalise inclusion, in sports and in life, and to make sure that people of determination are empowered as we connect minds and create the future.”

Even basketball exhibition team the Harlem Globetrotters got to showcase their skills, while visitors got a glimpse of the Premier League trophy and the European Cup.

Female athletes visiting Expo help to encourage participation and interest in women’s sports – Lancashire and England women’s cricketer Kate Cross was very impressed by the site.

“I couldn’t grasp how big it was going to be, you have to see it to believe it,” she said.

“At the Emirates Pavilion, they showed me what aviation is going to look like in 50 years’ time, and how sustainability is going to be a big part of that. It’s all really exciting.”

So who else might be visiting over the remaining three months? With an even bigger sports venue opening on the Expo site in January, the question should be, which other sporting names can you think of?

A note of caution

As Covid-19 cases again begin to rise, the most significant global gathering of 2021 continues to welcome visitors safely and responsibly.

Throughout the Expo 2020 Dubai journey organisers have worked hard to balance between holding a responsible, safe, fun Expo and navigating a way through a pandemic.

Like the city and the country, Expo organisers say they have learnt how to live and operate effectively within a Covid-19 world, as long as they remain agile, factual and responsible.

Expo 2020 Dubai’s stringent Covid-19 safety measures are designed to protect everyone visiting and working on site; they include mask-wearing – indoors and outdoors – for visitors, staff and participants.

On-site PCR testing facilities enable frequent testing of Country Pavilion staff, frontline workers and entertainers.

The health, safety, and wellbeing of everyone continues to be of the highest priority and we remain committed to working with our participants to welcome visitors to a safe, fun and exceptional Expo.

Seven Wonders of the World for 2022

Seven Wonders of the World for 2022

Seven Wonders of the World for 2022

Antarctica

One of the Seven Wonders of the World for 2022 – Wednesday 5 January 2022 marks 100 years since Ernest Shackleton’s death. He was in Antarctica at the time, on his fourth expedition there, attempting the first circumnavigation of the continent. He never completed that mission, but it was a fitting end for one of the greatest polar explorers in history.

Antarctica captivated Shackleton all his life and it’s easy to see why. It is both the largest desert on Earth and the largest single mass of ice on the planet, covering some five million square miles, almost double the size of the entire United States. In places, the ice is more than 15,000 feet thick. Entire mountain ranges are buried under the frozen bulk. Icebergs bigger than cities calve into the sea (the largest ever seen was seven times the size of London).

Antarctica is known as the ‘Last Continent’, and its preservation has never been so crucial. That, perhaps, is what kept drawing Shackleton back, and what keeps drawing people here to this day. To see it with your own eyes is a wonder unlike any other: killer whales breaching the arctic depths, colonies of emperor penguins tens of thousands strong, a world of pure wilderness.

Grand Avenue of the Sphinxes, Luxor, Egypt

Seven Wonders of the World for 2022: Ever since archaeologist Howard Carter opened the tomb of Tutankhamen a century ago, the world has been under its spell. But while King Tut gets much of the fame, his tomb is only one part of the extraordinary Valley of the Kings, which holds dozens of the elaborately decorated burial chambers of some of Egypt’s greatest pharaohs alongside its most treasured temples and monuments.

And it just got better. The Grand Avenue of the Sphinxes was unveiled on 24 November 2021 following decades of painstaking restoration. Linking the ancient temples of Karnak and Luxor – two of Egypt’s most spectacular archaeological sites – this 3,000-year-old, 1.7-mile road, which is lined with hundreds of statues of sphinxes and rams’ heads, was once used for religious parades and festivals. For centuries it was buried in sand and lost to history. Now, for the first time, it can be walked again.

Northern Lights, Yukon, Canada

Another of the Seven Wonders of the World for 2022 – Watching the dancing colours of the Northern Lights is one of the most awe-inspiring experiences on the planet: waves of green, pink and blue sway across the night’s sky, shimmering like a giant’s fire.

No matter how you see them, the Aurora is always an incredible experience. But now there’s a new way, which elevates that wonder up to another level. The ground-breaking Aurora 360 experience is an exclusive Northern Lights viewing flight, which takes you 36,000 feet above the clouds to give you the closest and most immersive view possible.

Departing from Whitehorse, deep in Canada’s Yukon territory, the private charter jet holds just 70 seats and is guided by dedicated Aurora scientists, guaranteeing you’ll fly straight to the heart of the action.

When the Indigenous people of the Yukon witnessed those fiery lights they saw the spirits of animals and their ancestors soaring above them. Now, for the first time, you can do more than stand in awe. You can soar with them too.

Colosseum, Rome, Italy

The Colosseum is the ultimate symbol of the might of the Roman Empire. For more than 400 years this enormous amphitheatre, the largest and grandest of its time, staged some of the bloodiest gladiatorial battles in history. Upwards of 50,000 people at a time would watch people and animals battle to the death in carefully orchestrated theatre.

They needed a staging area. So, the architects designed an elaborate series of tunnels underneath the arena’s floor to house the gladiators, and cage the beasts, as they readied for combat. For close to 2,000 years, no one has been allowed to enter. Until now.

525 feet of underground walkways and chambers were opened to the general public on 25 June 2021 for the first time. Walk in those gladiators’ footsteps and it’s easy to imagine the roar of the crowd, the sharpening of swords, the brutality, and ingenuity, of one of the biggest empires the world has ever known.

Disneyland Is Bringing Back 2 Major Festivals in 2022

January 03 2022 – Disneyland Is Bringing Back 2 Major Festivals in 2022

Disneyland announced the return of two fan-favorite festivals that didn’t get to happen in 2021 as the park was still closed due to COVID-19.

The annual Lunar New Year celebration will return from Jan. 21 through Feb. 13 and the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival will follow in March.

The Lunar New Year celebration will highlight traditions from Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese cultures with “performances, special activities, culinary delights, beautiful décor, celebratory merchandise, and more,” according to a Disney Parks blog post.

As the 2022 new moon will bring in the Year of the Tiger, beloved character Tigger will be a leading reveler at the festival. And of course, at the front of “Mulan’s Lunar New Year Celebration” will be Mulan herself and Mushu as they honor family and friendship, and fortune for the coming year.

Other Disney characters like Mickey and Minnie, the Three Little Pigs, and Raya from the new Disney film “Raya and the Last Dragon” will also appear at the celebration.

During the Lunar New Year celebration, visitors will be able to visit curated marketplaces featuring Asian cuisine. Select dining locations throughout the park will also feature Lunar New Year-themed food and beverage during the festival.

For the Food & Wine Festival, a dozen different marketplaces will take over the park from March 4 through April 26.

The festival will be a mouthwatering sampling of California’s best culinary experiences from across the state’s iconic regions and neighborhoods.

On Saturdays and Sundays throughout the festival period, chefs (including some celebrities) will offer complimentary demonstrations. And visitors will be able to book additional signature experiences like wine receptions and mixology tastings. An inclusive “Sip and Savor Pass” will also be available for visitors who want to sample all the festival has to offer.

5 travel trends to watch out for in 2022

Spotlight on…

December 31, 2021 – 5 travel trends to watch out for in 2022

Many trends started during Covid-19 will continue to be prominent next year as the travel industry adapts to the pandemic.

We asked travel expert Gabriella Brondani Rego to share her thoughts on some of the 2022 travel trends.

5 travel trends to watch out for in 2022

As countries reopen to international visitors, travellers have a chance to tick bucket list countries they’ve always wanted to see.

Whether it’s a visit to the Valley of the Kings in Egypt or Maya Bay in Thailand where the famous movie The Beach was filmed, once-in-a-lifetime trips are making a comeback.

And, some travellers will also incorporate more than one destination into their itineraries.

“With travel bans and border restrictions being sprung on travellers from SA unexpectedly at a moment’s notice, people will likely plan to take those once-in-a-lifetime bucket list trips in case the opportunity does not present itself again in future. Nothing is a certainty in a time of a pandemic, so people will likely aim to tick off their bucket list where they can, while they can,” said Rego.

Short trips

“The trips offer all the benefits of a holiday but within a short time,” said Rego.

“People who take these kinds of trips may feel more comfort and confidence in booking short trips closer to home in 2022 due to the pandemic.”

Remote working and workations

The demand for work from home and remote working will grow, especially since many travellers are able to work from anywhere and at any time.

Rego said more people travelled for longer due to remote working. “With the proof that remote working has maintained and, in many instances, improved productivity levels, people now have the opportunity to stay in leisure destinations for longer as they can balance work and travel easily.

“With long-term projections of remote working becoming an option for most young people and those who want to expose themselves to different cultures and experiences across the world, they will see work and travel as inseparable and something that could be done at the same time, having the opportunity to work from anywhere is the future.”

Splurge-cations

Scared to travel to international getaways, many are shifting their focus to splurge-cations. They want to explore local attractions while immersing themselves in luxury and top amenities. Think five-star hotels or villas with spectacular landscapes.

Rego said many people would splurge on their 2022 trips.

“Whether they go on an exotic destination overseas or try new, luxury things closer to home that they may not necessarily have chosen to do before, many are not shy to spend their money.”

Underwater yoga: The new travel trend you’ve probably never heard of.

Have you ever felt like your yoga session simply wasn’t enough? Well now you can take your practice to the next level in the form of underwater yoga, a new activity created by the Windjammer Landing Hotel in Saint Lucia. The classes take place 20 feet under the Caribbean Sea, and are designed to combat stress, promote healthy breathing and…

Zen trips

Travellers have taken on more stress in their work and personal lives. Some people opt to avoid touristy areas in order to enjoy more mindful getaways-trips that improve their mind, body and soul. Thee trips can include spa retreats, detox and art-inspired vacays as well as healthy eating and fitness breaks.

“The pandemic has allowed people to celebrate wellness, mental and physical well- being – not just in personal life, but when it comes to travel too.

“We’ll see more people choosing travel options or destinations that provide them with a genuine wellness and well-being experience in 2022.

“Whether it’s an active outdoors holiday with a nature experience or relaxing at the beachside or by waterfalls, many are prioritising their wellness.”

Panama Airport enters Top 10 world air hubs

December 30, 2021 – Panama Airport enters the Top 10 of world air hubs

Panama City’s Airport, Tocumen, jumped from 20th to 7th place among the air hubs with the highest international traffic when comparing 2019 with 2021. Tocumen airport tripled its influence in this period, according to the ranking prepared by the consultancy ForwardKeys, based on the analysis of air ticket reservation figures.

In 2019, Panama airport mobilized 1.2% of global international air connections and was in 20th place in the ranking of the largest air hubs prepared by ForwardKeys. It was the only Latin American airport on the list and occupied a prominent position, closing the Top 20, and not far from giants such as Seoul, Moscow or Singapore.

The pandemic has totally transformed the aerial map in less than two years. Hong Kong, for example, was in 7th place in 2019 and disappeared from this year’s list; London dropped from 9 to 14 and Abu Dhabi fell from 10 to 16.

Panama had the most dizzying ascent with its jump from 20th to 7th place. And much more if you take into account that in the first six places the same airports are maintained, although the order has changed. In Europe, Amsterdam overtook Frankfurt. And in the Middle East, Doha is now ahead of Dubai, albeit with very even figures that have caused them to alternate depending on the month.

The truth is that air traffic is much more concentrated today than it was two years ago. Not only does America account for Panama’s growth, but Mexico City entered the list in 17th place, and three U.S. airports also now occupy places in the Top 20: Miami (15), Dallas Fort Worth (19) and Houston (20).

Panama’s airport’s strategic advantage was compounded by the growing trend of travel between the U.S., the Caribbean, Central and South America.

In addition, Copa Airlines – the Panamanian company based in Tocumen – was one of the large Latin American airlines that faced the crisis best and the only one of the big four that should not have gone to Chapter 11 of the US Justice (such as LATAM, Avianca and Aeromexico).

Regional travel

The decline of long-distance travel in favor of intraregional travel also explains Panama’s rise.

According to ForwardKeys data, in 2019, the proportion of intraregional and extra-regional travel was 56% to 44%; a proportion that was accentuated to 62% versus 38% in 2021.

“The pattern has also changed, with a higher proportion of people in Europe and America travelling intraregionally rather than long distances,” she said.

Panama Figures

Tocumen International Airport mobilized almost 8 million passengers between January and November 2021 – the vast majority in connections – reflecting the “progressive reactivation and above forecasts” of its operations, HOSTELTUR reported last week.

During the first 11 months of 2021, a total of 7,967,142 passengers have passed through Panama Airport.

November was the second month in a row with a movement of more than one million travelers (1,089,773) since the beginning of the pandemic, according to airport statistics.

South America leads the markets with the highest passenger traffic through Tocumen with a 45% share, followed by North America with 32.1%; Central America with 9.8%; the Caribbean with 8.5% and Europe with 4.6%.

Between January and November, 78,381 departures and arrivals operations were registered, with 19 commercial airlines that have reactivated their operations with direct flights to 68 destinations, reported the Tocumen International Airport S.A. (AITSA).

The general manager of Tocumen, Raffoul Arab, together with leaders of ALTA and AIC-LAC.

“This has been a progressive revival based on the confidence of airlines and travelers, driven by progress in vaccination processes and by the relaxation of entry requirements to countries,” said Tocumen International Airport General Manager Raffoul Arab.

The AITSA stressed that according to the most recent report of the International Air Transport Association(IATA),“Panama has recovered 85% of its pre-pandemic connectivity to North America, Europe, as well as its intraregional traffic, surpassing countries that never closed their skies such as the United States and Brazil.”

Other regions

In the battle of hubs, Doha (Qatar) overtook Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to become the busiest airport in the Middle East. Doha connects air traffic between South Asia, the Middle East, North America and sub-Saharan Africa.

In Europe, Amsterdam closed the gap with Frankfurt and surpassed it for intra-European transits and connections with North America.

Tocumen continues to inaugurate connections: new Delta routes from the US this week.

Before the pandemic, in 2019, the list of the top 10 global airports was topped by Dubai with a market share of 7.7% of intercontinental flight connections. It was followed by Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Doha, Istanbul, Paris, Hong Kong, Munich, London and Abu Dhabi.

In 2021, it was led by Amsterdam, with an 8.3% share of intercontinental flight connections.

Analysis of monthly traffic in 2021 shows that Amsterdam briefly overtook Frankfurt in September and October, but retreated in November. In the same month, Dubai regained its lead over Doha for the first time since February.

Air France and KLM flights to Buenos Aires from January 2022

The Air France KLM Group will increase flight frequencies from Paris and Amsterdam to Buenos Aires to five weeks.

Flights between Ezeiza and Charles de Gaulle Airport in the French capital will be increased from 3 to 5 from January 10.

Air France, which currently operates three weekly passenger flights, will add two flights from January 10, linking Buenos Aires with Paris five times a week.

KLM, meanwhile, which currently operates four weekly passenger flights, will add a frequency in February, connecting Buenos Aires with Amsterdam five times a week.

The operation in this regime is confirmed until March, according to the authorizations of Argentina, and subject to modifications, specify the airlines.

From Argentina, “Air France and KLM offer connections via Paris and Amsterdam to more than 250 destinations around the world; the applicable health requirements are exclusively those of the final destination, which simplifies the connection, “they indicate.

For example, they point out, “if a person travels from Argentina to Spain or Italy as a final destination, they must meet the sanitary conditions required in Spain or Italy only, since the sanitary requirements of France and the Netherlands do not apply to connections.”

Before traveling, airlines recommend that their customers contact the relevant authorities of their countries of departure, destination and transit to verify entry and stay requirements.

To check the health and migration requirements of your destination and transit countries, consult the Air France or KLM Traveldoc sites.

Internal tourism, MICE and diversification for Colombia 2022

Internal tourism, MICE and diversification for Colombia

December 30, 2021 –

Ideas 2022: internal tourism, MICE and diversification for Colombia

In Colombia, as in almost all of the Americas, hotel occupancy data is gradually recovering, but profitability is still far from what was expected. In that sense, 2022 is presented as an opportunity, but also as a great challenge. In this exclusive article for HOSTELTUR Latam, José Andrés Duarte García, national executive president of the Hotel and Tourism Association of Colombia (Cotelco), analyzes these challenges and contributes his ideas to be debated by the sector.

From the union we have been accompanying and promoting measures of great relevance to be able to dynamize and stimulate tourism, for example having participated in the discussion of how to achieve the non-payment of Sales Tax (VAT), precisely for accommodation and lodging services until 2022,for all national tourists, stimulating of course the demand for more tourist services.

Additionally, we have accompanied and supported initiatives that seek that during the conjuncture, the hotel sector can have better tax conditions that allow it to survive during this crisis and thus give continuity in the provision of its services, thus thinking about the sustainability of the hotel sector and, in addition, influencing tourism activity in the different regions of the country. We also support the Government’s campaigns that stimulate domestic tourism, so we have joined, also transmitting a message of confidence so that visitors can move again with the certainty that the hotel industry is prepared to provide services under the necessary biosecurity protocols, and so tourists travel with peace of mind.

On the other hand, for companies and organizations to hold their events and conventions in the hotel infrastructure that the national territory has throughout the country.

We are sure that 2022 will be a year of recovery for the sector and we will continue working with the regional chapters of Cotelco, to generate strategies that allow strengthening the supply and demand of tourism services, thus increasing, of course, hotel occupancy levels and generating more jobs in the sector.

As is known, tourism represented a great driving force of the economy in the different regions of the country before the pandemic, and we are sure that with the joint work between regional governments, national government and the business sector, we will be able to reach and exceed the levels of development that the sector brought until the beginning of 2020.

But there are several challenges that we will face during 2022.

We need to continue working on the consolidation of a strengthened domestic tourism, under the perspective of the mobilization of tourists at the national level, taking into account the limitations of mobilization and closures for foreign tourism in the face of the variants of Covid.

This moment thus becomes the opportunity to generate confidence in Colombians, to travel internally, since if any eventuality associated with the pandemic occurs, they will be within the territory.

We will continue to work hand in hand with the territorial entities and with the national government to stimulate MICE tourism. That is a great challenge: to reactivate this tourism that weighs so heavily in some cities.

Another challenge is to work with the territories to seek diversification and the creation of a tourism product that covers the current demand, these new bets of the tourist, so that it allows to recognize a little more this new profile of the consumer.

We must continue working on the issue of the energy surcharge, so that it is a permanent measure and not only for the time of the pandemic. And likewise, we will seek extensions of time in some benefits that we have achieved for the sector, so that they are a relief for hoteliers, while achieving balance and recovery of the sector.

Electric air taxis

Electric air taxis for SkyWest

Electric air taxis

December 29, 2021 – Electric air taxis

The two largest U.S. regional carriers have made a commitment to buying electric air taxis.

On Tuesday, Indianapolis-based Republic Airways said it has signed a nonbinding letter of intent to purchase up to 200 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from Embraer-controlled Eve Air Mobility.

Electric air taxis for SkyWest and Republic Airways

In addition, SkyWest announced that it has signed a nonbinding letter of intent for the purchase of up to 100 Eve aircraft.

Both airlines said the partnerships will also focus on the development of air taxi networks in key U.S. markets.

Republic said it will focus on developing such networks on the East Coast and in the central U.S., with an initial emphasis on Boston, New York and Washington, D.C.

SkyWest was less specific, saying only that it and Eve had committed to optimizing eVTOL service in key cities that are early adopters. In so doing, SkyWest and Eve plan to focus on airport specifications and a roadmap for certification of Eve’s eVTOL craft.

Financial muscle for eVOTL

Tuesday’s announcements came as Eve revealed that it will take the company public on the New York Stock Exchange in combination with Zanite Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). The public company will trade as Eve Holding and Embraer will have an 82% equity stake.

Eve has provided few details on the eVTOL craft it has under development. But Republic and SkyWest are far from its lone airline partners. The company has lined up 15 other launch partners, including Fort Lauderdale-based aircraft lessor Azorra, which also announced its intent Tuesday to purchase up to 200 Eve craft.

SkyWest operates regional flights for Delta, United, American and Alaska Airlines, while Republic operates regional flights for Delta, United and American. Among U.S. carriers, they join United, American, JetBlue and regional carrier Mesa Airlines, each of which has invested in eVTOL craft, made tentative purchase commitments or both.

Airlines that are supporting eVTOL development tout its possibilities for easing commutes to and from major airports, as well as the environmental benefits of electric-powered transport.

Brazil Tourism Growth into 2022

December 27, 2021 – Brazil Tourism Growth into 2022

Brazil’s tourism revenues will increase by 21.9% this year despite the millions of dollars in losses the sector has accumulated since the pandemic hit the country, according to estimates released by the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC in Portuguese).

Between March last year and October 2021, tourism in Brazil has lost 453 billion reais (about $80.892 billion), according to the data. In 2020 alone, the revenues decreased by 36%.

Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro – the main cities hit by the pandemic – lead the losses ranking and account for more than half (55%) of the national losses.

However, the sector has been gradually recovering since March, although the revenues are still 19.5% below those recorded in February 2020, before the pandemic. In October, the Tourism Activities Index reached 80% of the levels recorded in February 2020. Compared to the previous month (September), the economic activity of tourism in Brazil registered a growth of 1%, the sixth consecutive positive month. Thanks to that, the accumulated benefits between May and October already reached 51.2%, reducing the gap from the figures recorded before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Confederation’s projections show that in addition to the 21.9% growth in revenues this year, despite the cancellation of important national events, such as the “Reveillon” in Rio de Janeiro – the traditional New Year’s Eve party that gathers millions of people on Copacabana beach -, the result will also be positive for 2022 when a 2.4% increase in revenues is expected.

“The expectation for these activities in the coming months remains favorable, despite the fact that the restrictions and the cancellation of some important events will delay the full recovery of revenue generation potential, which we believe will occur after August 2022,”  said Fabio Bentes, CNC economist responsible for the analysis.

According to the study, after the covid infection peak points recorded in Brazil, social isolation measures caused a downward trend, standing only 2% above that recorded at the end of February 2020.

However, the scenario remains unsure, since the high rate of inflation in the country “is contaminating the prices of services and the tourist sector”. Inflation in Brazil reached 10.74% in the last twelve months before October 2020, driven by high gasoline prices. Inflation has been more than double than the one expected (3.75% for this year), with a tolerance margin of 1.5%.

With the year-end and holiday season approaching, many Brazilians are gearing up to travel, even with high airfare prices and a new COVID-19 variant. The flow of tourists has left the sector’s entrepreneurs optimistic.

A survey with hotel and restaurant company unions indicates that 61% of those interviewed expect a growth in sales compared to last year. Of these, 31.5% believe in a boost of up to 30%. According to the Brazilian Federation of Accommodation and Food, more than half of the businessmen have hired new employees.

Uswitch has analysed the colour palettes, global search volumes, and the places gaining the most Instagram hashtags to compile a list of the most colourful destinations in the world.

The world is home to many colourful attractions that travellers travel far and wide to see.

Cinque Terre showcases colourful houses and vineyards in each of its five towns. Besides the allure of its colourful houses, guests can enjoy the beach, wine and hiking trails.

Kampung Pelangi in Indonesia is the second most colourful destination, with seven colours. Known as “Rainbow Village” when translated into English, the village that showcases yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, blue and green, is the ideal backdrop for social media snaps.

In addition, visit places like Lawang Sewu, Wisata Sam Poo Kong and Kota Lama Semarang for its history and culture. Of course, there are also other foodie and art attractions that one can visit.

Another place that has warmed the hearts of many travellers is Willemstad in Curaçao.

The capital city of Curaçao is known for its old town centre with pastel-coloured colonial architecture. Check out Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge, Kenepa Beach and Punda when you visit.

Closer to home is Bo Kaap in Cape Town. Known to attract many well-known celebs including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle during their 2019 visit. Bo-Kaap’s history dates from the 1760s when numerous “huurhuisjes” (rental houses) were built and leased to slaves, according to Cape Town Tourism’s website.

December 24, 2021 – Zuiderdam – Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam Resumes Service from Port of San Diego; Second Ship from California and Sixth Back to Cruising

Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam

returned to service today from Port of San Diego in California, the second Holland America ship to resume service in San Diego since the industrywide pause.

Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam resumes cruising from San Diego today.

Zuiderdam‘s crew celebrated the return in holiday spirit with sleighbells ringing and Santa and his elves on hand to open embarkation and welcome guests back on board. Zuiderdam joins Koningsdam, which resumed service in San Diego Oct. 10. Holland America Line now has six ships cruising again in the Caribbean, Mexico and along the Pacific Coast of the United States.

“San Diego is an important homeport for us, and we are excited to have two ships back in full-time operation here with the restart of Zuiderdam today,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line. “We are proud to be part of the San Diego community, which has continued to show us tremendous support throughout our restart. There’s no better way to kick off Zuiderdam‘s season than with a holiday cruise full of joyful guests and our grateful crew who are happy to have them back on board.”

Zuiderdam‘s first cruise is a 10-day “Mexico and Sea of Cortez” that will be followed by Panama Canal departures and a grand 35-day South Pacific sojourn and Pacific cruise. Koningsdam sails a series of seven-day cruises to the California Coast or Mexico and two longer Hawaii voyages that run through April 3, 2022. Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam each make one call at San Diego in spring 2022.

Earlier in the week on Dec. 19, while remaining alongside at San Diego’s B-Street Cruise Terminal, Zuiderdam took part in the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights with an illuminated “Ho Ho Ho” on the ship’s side to show community support.

About Holland America Line in San Diego:
Holland America Line has been homeporting from the Port of San Diego since the 1990s. For the upcoming 2021-22 season, the cruise line will bring more than 81,000 guests to the city, which will result in more than $35 million in direct spending.

Operationally, each ship visit directly contributes $364,000 to the local economy in provisioning (fuel, food, flowers, piano tuning, supplies), port taxes, and spending. When Koningsdam and Zuiderdam call at San Diego, both ships will connect to shore power, reducing the ships’ carbon footprint.

Throughout the years, Holland America Line has been actively involved with more than 30 nonprofits in San Diego County through giving, shipboard lunches and cruise donations, including La Jolla Playhouse, San Ysidro Health and Girl Scouts San Diego.

Cosmopolita Rome

Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president, development, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Hilton said, “In the coming years, we are due to open eight new hotels in Italy, significantly expanding our footprint in key cities and resorts.  Italy, like many of its European neighbours, has a large number of independent hotels that would benefit from visibility from Hilton’s 118 million Hilton Honors members, and as a result we’re seeing growing interest in Hilton’s Collection Brands.  We’re looking forward to working with our partners at G&W Invest Srl to welcome guests at our first Tapestry Collection by Hilton in the heart of Rome.”

Walter Pecoraro, owner and CEO of G&W Invest Srl said, “Cosmopolita Rome will be our second hotel in partnership with Hilton and the first in Rome.  Having welcomed guests for over a century, we are proud to have owned and managed the hotel for the past 25 of those years.  This hotel is the perfect location to open Rome’s first Tapestry Collection by Hilton hotel, and we are confident that now is the right time to build on our relationship with Hilton.”

Once refurbishments are complete, the Cosmopolita Rome will have 76 tastefully decorated rooms, designed to help guests immerse themselves in the architecture of Rome, and will boast a scenic rooftop overlooking the historic city, where guests can enjoy their breakfast surrounded by the stunning architecture.  With a newly renovated gym and meeting space for small business meetings, this unique hotel will be the ideal location to explore Rome.

Located in the centre of Rome, guests will be within a 10-minute walk of some of Rome’s most popular sights, including the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Colosseum.  Rome’s many renowned galleries, museums and landscaped parks make it the perfect destination for international guests looking to explore some of Europe’s most celebrated attractions.  By night, guests can explore Rome’s 54 Michelin star restaurants or visit nearby bars and cocktail hotspots.

The new hotel is the latest addition to Tapestry Collection by Hilton, which is expanding rapidly in Europe.  The continent’s first Tapestry Collection hotel opened in Spain this year, with four more due to open in France, the UK and Portugal. Known for their vibrant and unique styles, each Tapestry Collection by Hilton hotel encourages guests to immerse themselves in the local area, creating authentic connections with destinations while offering an upscale and comfortable hotel experience.

The Cosmopolita Rome, Tapestry Collection by Hilton will join the award-winning Hilton Honors guest loyalty programme, allowing more than 118 million members who book directly with Hilton to earn Points for hotel stays and experiences, plus instant benefits including contactless check-in with room selection, Digital Key and Connected Room.

Hilton has seven trading hotels in Rome under the brands, Waldorf Astoria, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, DoubleTree by Hilton, Curio Collection by Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn and Hampton by Hilton.
