A Travel Guide To Prague

Travel news from around the world

Prague:

Prague is a beautiful European city that might not be talked about much, but tourists should plan to see all of it.

Located in the Czech Republic, Prague is a beautiful European city that might not be talked about as much as, say, Paris or London, but it definitely deserves a spot on your list of places to travel to. The city is famous for its architecture and the population is 1.3 million.

Every city has unique landmarks, a collection of awesome hotels and restaurants, and some things that tourists should know about currency, tipping, dining out, and public transportation. We’ve got all the details here so you can have an incredible time in Prague.

Here is a travel guide to Prague and things that tourists should plan their trip around.

See The Charles Bridge And Old Town Square
According to The Crazy Tourist, seeing the Charles Bridge would be exciting. The website explains, “A simple walk across the 14th Century bridge is one of the most enjoyable and memorable experiences of visiting Prague. The bridge was commissioned in 1357 by Charles IV to replace an older bridge that had been washed away by floods.”

The website also says walking through Old Town Square would be fun. It basically looks the same as it did in the 10th century, which is interesting to think about, and there are gorgeous buildings and restaurants.

Plan A Prague Trip For September, June, Or Late May
My Czech Republic recommends September, June, and late May for the best time to go to Prague. The website says that the weather changes quite a lot but those months offer the greatest potential weather-wise.
Prague has pretty warm summers and it won’t be too hot at night if you go in September, June, or late May.

Stay At Hotel Kings Court Or Moods Charles Bridge
Hotel Kings Court is a hotel located in the Old Town area of Prague. Stay here and you’ll get a fridge, free Wi-Fi, and can walk to almost 500 restaurants. People say that the beds are comfy and the rooms are spacious. You also won’t have to pay for breakfast. The Majesty Lounge has music, Asian food, and drinks, and you can find Italian and Mediterranean food in the ADELE Restuarant & Bar.

Moods Charles Bridge is another option. You’ll find comfortable rooms with a lot of purple, which is nice, and the view offers a close look at the beautiful red/orange rooftops of the city. You can stroll over to Old Town Square in just ten minutes, and if you need gluten-free or vegan food, this is the hotel for you.

Restaurant U Modre Kachnicky Is A Popular Place
Check out Restaurant U Modre kachnicky which is a “Travellers’ Choice 2019 Winner” on Trip Advisor. There are countless reviews saying it’s just so good and diners can expect a super cozy atmosphere and delicious plates.

Some menu items include Potato pancakes, Warm goat cheese (that comes with “saffron sauce, roasted sunflower seeds and hot raspberries”), and amazing desserts such as “Poached pear with red wine and green tea, poppy seed cake and vanilla ice cream.”

Public Transportation Is The Perfect Way To Get Around Prague
Thanks to this Reddit post, we know how to get around this city: “Public transport in Prague is great: cheap, running 24/7, safe and convenient.”

According to Lonely Planet, you can get tickets and use them whether you’re taking the bus, tram, or metro, which is super convenient news for tourists. The website also offers some amazing explanations of how to use each type of transportation. Visitors can hop on the metro from 5 in the morning until 12 a.m. and this would be perfect if you’re going far. Taking the tram is good if you’re not going too far, and you can take the tram as early as 5 a.m. up until 12:30 a.m. If you want to take a cab, use your phone to find one instead of seeing one on the street.

Landmarks Include Prague Castle And St. Vitus Cathedral
According to Trip Advisor, Prague Castle has 700 rooms and is the biggest in all of Europe, which is impressive. People say it’s a good idea to pay for a tour ticket and this makes sense as you would want to learn all that you could about it.

Another landmark in Prague is St. Vitus Cathedral. As this reviewer on Trip Advisor says, “Absolutely beautiful inside and out. The windows are most beautiful. Inside is so well looked after.” It’s located in the same place as Prague Castle so you’ll be able to see these two landmarks together.

Lonely Planet says that the currency in Prague is the Czech Crown and that visitors can bring credit cards on their trip and also take money out of ATMs. The website notes that if a place is really tiny, you might not be able to use your credit card. It seems wise to have a combination of cash and cards.

5 Foods That You’ll Fall In Love With In Russia

blank

Travel news from around the world

Russia:

Russia’s food is not known worldwide, but the country produces plenty of heavenly dishes that are simply unforgettable.

Depending on where you live, Russian food might be pretty hard to come by. Many of the dishes haven’t achieved the international popularity that foods from other cultures have on the world stage. So while traveling throughout Russia, one of the greatest surprises is often the amazing food!

There are a handful of delicacies that you should definitely try before you leave Russia. Fair warning: Nearly all of them contain sour cream. They are all packed with flavor and will leave you feeling full and satisfied.

Check out these 5 foods that you’ll fall in love while in Russia.

Sweet & Sour Soup: Solyanka

The Russians are known for their delicious soups. Although they serve up some tasty chilled soups, their hot soups are to die for. One of the most popular is called solyanka, which is essentially a sweet and sour soup.
The ingredients that go into a standard solyanka include pork, chicken, and beef, both fresh and cured. Pickled cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, olives, and capers. Fresh herbs such as parsley and dill are then added. This dish is perfect for warding off the extreme cold that you may experience in Russia during the winter.

Super Creamy: Beef Stroganoff

You don’t have to be Russian to have heard of beef stroganoff. This classic dish is now popular all over the world, but of course, you will still find the most authentic version in Russia. Basically, beef stroganoff consists of beef strips that are tossed in a sauce made with butter, mustard, onions, white wine, and sour cream. You can eat it by itself, but most people like to have it served with starchy noodles.

Sour cream is a staple ingredient in many Russian dishes. In the local language, it is known as smetana.

Sweet Honeycake: Medovik

As far as sweets go, Russia definitely has its fair share of desserts. One of the most popular is a type of honey cake called medovik. Of course, the other star ingredient in this sweet dish is sour cream which has been sweetened.

Historically, medovik was beloved by the Imperial family. It consists of think layers of honey sponge cake which are alternated with layers of sour cream. The cake is normally stacked quite high, usually containing between five and 15 layers. Nuts are often sprinkled on top to absorb some of the cream.

Adopted Classic: Borscht

If there was one Russian dish that was more famous than the rest combined, it would be borscht. This soup is thought of as quintessentially Russian, but interestingly, it originated in another Eastern European nation: Ukraine.

The base for the soup comes from beets, which gives it the vibrant purple-red color. Meat and vegetables go into the soup which makes it super filling and hearty. Some recipes use everything from carrots to cabbage to potatoes in their ingredients. The best thing about borscht is that it can be served either hot or cold.

Versatile Pancakes: Blini

The Russian answer to the French crepe is known as blini or blin. These pancakes are incredibly versatile because they can be both savory and sweet. When sweet, they are rolled with fillings such as chocolate syrup and jam. When savory, they tend to contain cheese, caviar, onions, and of course, sour cream.

According to Trip Savvy, there is a religious festival in Russia where blini are eaten to celebrate. Known as Maslenitsa, the festival takes place before the beginning of the religious season known as Great Lent.

Singapore:

Despite the pandemic, the hospitality industry has remained resilient with a flurry of new openings coming up; hotel operators have also taken this opportunity to refresh their rooms. This is likely driven by demand for domestic staycations, as well as confidence in the recovery of the industry, which is expected to be even more robust in the future due to a pent-up desire to travel.

Several new hotels are looking to make their mark in Singapore come 2022 and 2023. Here, we’ve gathered some exciting hotel openings to anticipate; 2022 can’t come soon enough!

Raffles Sentosa Resort & Spa Singapore
The second Raffles hotel in Singapore is set to open its doors in 2022, more than a century after the iconic national monument first opened in 1887 at Beach Road. Managed by its parent hospitality group Accor, the upcoming Raffles Sentosa Resort & Spa Singapore will feature 61 villas spread across 100,000sqm of verdant tropical gardens.

The resort is set to become the first villa-only hotel in Singapore. Acclaimed international design firm Yabu Pushelberg helmed the design of the resort, carefully crafting the landscaping, lighting and interiors of the idyllic destination. Villas will range in size between 260sqm for one-bedroom villas to 450sqm for four-bedroom villas; each exclusive room will feature a private swimming pool and terrace area that’s shrouded by nature to provide privacy and comfort. Other facilities to expect include a bar, restaurants, a fitness centre and several meeting rooms.

Pan Pacific Orchard

Located conveniently along the stretch of the Orchard Road shopping belt, Pan Pacific Orchard will make its highly-anticipated opening in 2022. This upcoming tropical skyrise will be designed with an eco-conscious approach by local firm WOHA, and it’s set to become a green paradise amidst an urban landscape.

The zero-waste hotel will feature four special levels dedicated to verdant gardens and lush greenery. Besides the sky terraces, the hotel also offers 350 rooms, a gym, swimming pool, bars and restaurants and an exclusive club lounge. Other sustainable elements in the building include a rainwater harvesting system, a recyclable water system, and a compactor that turns food waste into compost, which will eventually be used as fertiliser for the hotel’s sky gardens.

Artyzen Cuscaden

The first Artyzen hotel from Hong Kong-based international hotel group Artyzen Hospitality is slated to welcome guests in 2022. As its name suggests, the new hotel is located along Cuscaden Road and right in the middle of the bustling Orchard shopping district.

Designed by homegrown architect firm Ong&Ong and Australia-based interior design firm Nicholas Graham & Associates, the 20-storey skyscraper features 142 tastefully designed rooms, eight of which are exclusive suites. Each room is designed with a handsome mix of furnishings in warm tones. The hotel will also feature restaurants that feature Peranakan-inspired cuisines, a garden-themed spa, and a rooftop swimming pool where one can admire the scenic city views.

Voco Orchard Singapore

The first Voco hotel in Southeast Asia will open in January 2022 following a rebrand from Hilton Singapore in Orchard Road. InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), which helms the premium hotel chain, announced in June 2021 that the company has signed a partnership with Hilton Singapore to reflag the space as part of IHG’s global expansion.

The 423-room hotel will be designed as a contemporary and inviting space with colourful interiors that exude a cheery atmosphere. With 12 meeting rooms across more than 1,750 sqm, the hotel is also the perfect space to host company events, weddings, and other special occasions.

Pullman Singapore

Another Accor hotel on this list that will be making its debut in 2022 is Singapore’s first Pullman Hotel. Located at Hill Street near Fort Canning, the five-star hotel is developed by EL Development.

The 342-room hotel will be designed in accordance with the international luxury hotel chain’s “work hard, play hard” motto. A reflection of the hotel’s dual concept that offers spaces for both business and leisure, the building will feature executive lounges with sweeping views of the Singapore River and St Andrew’s Cathedral, meeting rooms, a rooftop bar, and a health and fitness centre. Other smart features will also be integrated throughout the hotel to meet the demands of the discerning digital traveller.

The Singapore Edition

Conceived by American hotelier Ian Schrager in partnership with hospitality giant Marriott International, Edition Hotels combine personalised, intimate experiences with the global reach and operational expertise of Marriott. The first Edition hotel will open on our island in 2022, following a delayed opening due to the pandemic.

Located on the former Boulevard Hotel site on Orchard Boulevard, the eight-storey boutique hotel will feature 190 guest rooms. As per all Edition Hotels, each room will be elegantly designed with a sophisticated flair. The overall hotel design will also highlight Singapore’s expertise at merging technology with the arts by infusing futuristic art-like elements throughout the space.

Mondrian Singapore

Singapore’s first Mondrian hotel will make its debut in 2023. A premium hotel brand managed by the Accor group, Mondrian hotels are set in dynamic cultural enclaves around the world. Mondrian Singapore is situated in the heart of the vibrant Duxton Hill neighbourhood.

Developed by Craig Road Property Holdings, the hotel will feature 300 guest rooms and suites housed across several heritage shophouses. DP Architects and Studio Carter will work together to design the three-storey property and infuse it with a contemporary twist alongside heritage-inspired design elements. Monaco: The World’s Richest Country That Is Half A Town On France’s Southern Coast

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Monaco:

Monaco is tiny. Really tiny! It is about half a town on the southern coast of France near the border with Italy. Monaco is considered a Principality and is one of the microstates of Europe. Only around a quarter of the population is actually Monaco citizens. It is near the touristic and beautiful southern French city of Nice.

Reminiscent of the HBO series Game Of Thrones, this Principality is ruled by a house – the House of Grimaldi since 1297. Its history and status are very much tied with that of France. France is responsible for the military defence of this country and France must be consulted every time a new ruler is appointed. French citizens are also the largest resident group in Monaco, many of the people working here live in France.

This state is very very small and every square inch of this land has been used – often several times with multiple levels used for different things. For example, a piece of land may have a road and a shopping centre occupying the same space. When we say Monaco is half a town, well it kinda is. The border with France is no demarcated and the border crosses streets and cuts through houses. To know which country you are in, you really need to use your GPS.

The Principality of Monaco is beautiful and is famous for its casinos, gambling, and being the destination of the super-rich. It is common to see mega yachts in its ports.

Fun Fact: In 2018 Real Estate Prices Reached $145,000 Per Square Meter

The Principality has a reputation as a tax haven and has no income tax and has low business taxes. Over 30% of its population are millionaires.

The Principality of Monaco is a beautiful fort and has an old town that you should see. Here you can see the ruins of an old castle. This is called the City Of Monaco and is nicknamed “The Rock”. It is the seat of the Prince and the government buildings.

Prince’s Palace Of Monaco
The Prince’s Palace of Monaco was built nearly a thousand years ago back in 1191 as a Genoese Fortress. It is the official residence of the Sovereign of Monaco. In its history, this palace/fort has been besieged and bombarded by many foreign powers. Over the years the fortress was converted into the palace it is today.

Today, while it is a major tourist attraction, it is also the fully working palace and headquarters of the Prince of Monaco. It has remained the home and base of the ruling family of Monaco for 700 years.

The Monte Carlo Casino
The Monte Carlo Casino is a large casino on the eastern side of the Principality and is a must for those visiting Monaco and are partial to gambling. This is the main gambling site here. Until recently the Monte Carlo Casino was the principal source of revenue for the ruling family and the state.

Fun Fact: Citizens Of Monaco Are Forbidden From Entering The Gaming Grounds Of The Casino

There is little more to do in Monaco. Monaco is a tiny country designed for the mega-rich and for gambling. It is possible to walk the full length and breadth of this country in an afternoon. If you are going to Nice on the south coast of France, then Monaco is a great day trip and one more country you can tick off the bucket list. Unless you can afford very high prices, it’s best to find accommodation nearby in France. Space is very tight in this tiny country.

But it’s fun to see what a tiny Mediterranean country for the mega-rich looks like. The old part of the city is stunning and very much worth a visit. It is easily the most scenic part of the place. There are beaches where you can relax on. It also has a sizeable shopping centre for you to enjoy. Like all Mediterranean cities, Monaco has plenty of cafes and restaurants everywhere.

Most people who spend any amount of time here are the wealthy who come here for gambling and the like.

In short, Monaco is an oddity and a place fun to visit. You can see and do everything here in a single-day trip.

Vilnius And Why This Old Lithuanian City Shouldn’t Be Missed

blank

Travel news from around the world

blank

Lithuanian:

Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania and it offers a rich experience for those looking to explore the east and Baltics region of Europe. Vilnius is only a small city with a population of around 600,000 but it is the cultural centre and capital of this small country. Vilnius’s Old Town is a UNESCO-listed site. One of the fun things one can do is travel through all three Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia). If you are feeling adventurous then consider taking the ferry from Tallinn, Estonia (another overlooked country) to Helsinki, Finland.

Vilnius was historically part of the Russian empire and as it collapsed in World War One, Vilnius became a contested city between Poland and Lithuania. In the Interwar Period, it was part of Poland. After World War Two it became a part of Lithuania. Additionally, before WW2, Vilnius was one of the main Jewish centers of Europe. The history and architecture are accordingly mixed here.

Lithuanian Song Festival
Part of what triggered the demise of the Soviet Union was the Singing Revolution in the Baltic States. This is where the Baltics peacefully protested Soviet rule by holding hands and singing in defiance of Moscow. Today the Lithuanian Song Festival has become one of the most important events marking their independence. Perhaps something like the 4th Of July in America. There can be as many as 40,000 participants in these singing festivals. They are held once every 4 years, the next one is scheduled for 2022.

Number Of Singers: Approx. 20,000
Number of Dancers: Approx. 9,000
Next Festival: Summer 2022

Trakai Island Castle
For a great day trip from Vilnius consider visiting the Trakai Island Castle. This magnificent island castle was built around 1409 and only a short drive from Vilnius. This Castle complex is a must-see if you are visiting Vilnius and looks like something straight out of a Disney cartoon. It has been fully rebuilt and lies on an island surrounded by a lake. The whole lake is a stunning park.

The Castle is connected to the mainland by a wooden bridge and is considered one of the national treasures of Lithuania. This is a museum with full exhibitions and so is perfect for learning about Lithuanian history.

In Vilnius, it is best to relax and explore the city while feeling its vibe. If you would like nightlife there’s plenty of that here. Vilnius is a city famous for its artistic flair and one should really see and explore the treasures in this city. Be sure to frequent the many restaurants on the streets in the old city (like other cities in Europe, dining and drinking beer is popular outside).

Gediminas Castle Tower
One of the main landmarks in Vilnius is the Gediminas Castle Tower. This is the remaining part of the Upper Castle in the city and it is considered one of the parts of Lithuania. From here you can have fantastic views of Vilnius and the characteristic red roofs of its Medieval Old Town.

The first castle here was built in the 13th-14th centuries to guard the city, but the original wooden castle burnt down in the 15th century during a fire that ravished the city. The three brick towers and a Gothic palace were rebuilt in its place. The castle is easily reached either by car or by a leisurely stroll up the gentle hill it’s built on.

Fun Fact: Out Side Of The Old Town Is Dominated By Soviet Architecture

Film: Vilnius Was The Site Of Filming HBO’s Cherynobol Miniseries

St. Anne’s Church
One of the more impressive buildings of Vilnius (and included in UNESCO’s list of buildings), is St. Anne’s Church. This is one of the most impressive examples of Gothic architecture in Vilnius and is one of the must-see cathedrals of Europe.

This awe-inspiring church was completed more than 500 years ago back in 1500. According to legend, when Napoleon saw this church during his invasion of Russia, he wanted to carry it back with him to Paris in the palm of his hand.

Cathedral Square
The old city of Vilnius is small and is best discovered by just walking around and seeing visiting the many interesting buildings. One of the more interesting places not to miss out on is the Cathedral Square in the centre of the Old Town. This is the site of many of the national events and festivals like parades, large concerts, New Year’s celebrations, and the like. There is the neo-classical Vilnius Cathedral and its free-standing bell tower. One can consider this the heart of the nation.

In short, there are many things to see and do in Vilnius, and these are just a few of them. The Old City is well worth visiting for a couple of days.

Unlike the more popular countries like the United States of America (USA) that are always on international TV, either on the news or for some other reason, countries like Poland are much quieter countries. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its wonders within its borders.

Located on the Oder River of Western Poland is the city of Wroclaw. This city is famous for many things, two of which are its majestic townhouses and modern fountain.

Tours take you back to the horrors of World War II as tourists explore the German prison camp Stalag Luft 3 and the most brazen prisoner of war jailbreak during World War II. Including the tunnels used for the escape called Tom, Dick, and Harry, respectively of which a legion of 600 men dug in secret preparing for their escape. After a full year of digging, a total of 76 prisoners decided to take their chances through the Harry tunnel on the night of the 24th of March 1944. While this escape was short-lived as 73 of the prisoners were recaptured during the pursuit. An angered Hitler ordered that 50 of them be killed. For 3 prisoners, this was worth it.

Tourist go through the main market square of Wroclaw where they can see the townhouses of the famous Hansel and Gretel. This tour is a fantastic walkthrough of Wroclaw’s history as it also features the Jatki, which is a really old slaughterhouse. It’s pretty much medieval stuff. Visitors also get to see areas of old that were used as a punishing ground for criminals.

This Polish soup is often taken for dinner in Wroclaw. This soup is prepared in different styles so it is up to you to find your preference. The basic ingredients of this soup are pork, special polish sausages, potatoes, eggs, and various vegetables. This meal is indeed a delight and is a must-try while in Wroclaw.

This meal is a delicacy and is a dish local to the people of Wroclaw. The beauty of this dish is that can be prepared in various ways. The different forms of Pierogi are prepared with any of the following: mushrooms, cheese, meat, potato, cabbage, and spinach. The Pierogi has a delicious taste and is a meal you shouldn’t miss while in Wroclaw.

As well as having a beautiful old city center, Casablanca is something of the New York of Morrocco and is the most important financial and productive city. Casablanca also has the busiest airport in the country. It is certainly worth spending a day or two in this historic city.

Rabat

Rabat is the capital city and is a little less touristy than the other cities. It is well worth a visit though. Here you can see the traditional markets and the old coastal castle. It is worth spending a day in the capital, Rabat.

In short, Morocco is absolutely stunning and hospitable country brimming with history and things to see and do. It is also a safe country. But like everywhere in the world, there are some things to keep in mind.

Malta:

Malta enjoys the warmest weather on average in the whole of Europe, making it the perfect place for a last-minute getaway this summer.

Its dramatic history includes being ruled by Romans, Moors, the French and the British, meaning that English is widely spoken and its cities are full of amazing cultural treasures – from ancient temples to the stunning Renaissance buildings in the capital, Valletta.

Not to mention its beautiful beaches, like the stunning Blue Lagoon, which is home to dolphins and sea lions. A trip to Malta combines the best of ancient Europe with the kind of paradise island scenery that you’d normally have to take a long-haul flight to experience. To get you in the mood for a Maltese holiday, we’ve picked out some of the best hotels, from luxurious five-star resorts to atmospheric boutique B&Bs

Ursulino Valletta, Valletta

This modern boutique B&B is right by some of Valletta’s most popular attractions, including the Upper Barrakka Gardens and Manoel Theatre, and features a beautiful roof terrace where you can eat breakfast while gazing out across the dreamy blue sea.

Original artworks from Ursulino Valletta’s private collection hang on the walls, and the gorgeous contemporary suites come with a plush living area and mezzanine sleeping quarters.

Casa Rocca Piccola B&B, Valletta

Fancy staying in a real Renaissance palazzo in the historic centre of Valletta? Then look no further than this romantic B&B inside the ancestral home of the 9th Marquis de Piro and his family.

The five bedrooms at Casa Rocca Piccola B&B are packed with period features, antique curios and beautiful ornate furnishings, plus there’s a gorgeous terraced garden for enjoying breakfast in the fresh air.

Part of the building is also a popular museum, where you can learn about Malta’s history through the lives of the palace’s aristocratic owners.

AX The Palace, Sliema

Located in stylish Sliema, a buzzing, affluent town on Malta’s north-east coast, AX The Palace is kitted out with contemporary rooms, a rooftop spa and infinity pool, as well as a choice of five places to eat and drink.

Dine on east Asian-inspired dishes with views out across Sliema’s harbour in the ninth-floor TemptAsian, or head up to the roof for cocktails and pizza at one of Malta’s coolest night-time venues. Rooms here range from light and modern Comfort Rooms overlooking the hotel atrium, through to Designer Suites, each themed around one of the five senses.

The Phoenicia Malta, Valletta

One of Malta’s grandest and most famous hotels, The Phoenicia was a favourite of the Queen when the British ruled over Malta in the early 20th Century, and has kept plenty of its effortless Art-Deco style.

Set just outside Valletta’s city walls, the luxury Malta hotel boasts an infinity pool overlooking the harbour, a lovely sun terrace and an indoor pool and spa. Elegant marble interiors and wooden ceiling fans keep the hotel cool during the summer months, and the main restaurant serves inventive seasonal dishes, with much of the produce grown on-site in the kitchen garden.

My Travel House, Rabat

Perfectly situated for soaking up the rhythms of village life in sleepy Rabat, now a suburb of Mdina, this beautiful stone townhouse is a great place for exploring Malta’s historic north. Discover Roman villas and ancient catacombs nearby, or head to a nearby café to enjoy the buzz of local life.

My Travel House has simple, comfortable rooms – one with a balcony overlooking Rabat’s ancient pedestrianised streets – as well as a roof terrace where guests can relax over breakfast in the sun.

Cugo Gran Macina Grand Harbour Hotel, Senglea

Perched opposite Valletta the Cugó Gran Macina is one of Malta’s most prestigious hotels.

Its exterior fortress walls give way to an ultra-modern look inside, and the facilities are second to none, with a stylish pool and deck overlooking Valletta’s iconic harbour, and an elegant bar and restaurant where the award-winning kitchen team conjure up sophisticated takes on traditional Maltese cuisine.

Denmark new hotel Copenhagen

Copenhagen is a happening city with new hotels and great dining. More hotels are added yearly, here is one of them.

Explore the Newest Luxury Hotels in Brazil

The best luxury hotels in Rio de Janeiro, including beach butlers and sigh-worthy infinity pools

blank

Travel news from around the world

Brazil:

Where once the Copacabana Palace was the first and last word in luxury accommodation in Rio, the arrival of Rogerio Fasano’s first foray in the city right on the Ipanema beachfront (where else?) emphatically raised the bar. The famous Palace still delivers bygone glamour and facilities galore including a spectacular pool, but the Fasano and, more recently, the Emiliano both arrived from São Paulo with added contemporary cool to go with the undeniable luxury. These are the places to see and be seen, with exclusive rooftop pools, famous guests and sumptuous spas, all delivered with discreet but welcoming warmth. Here’s our pick of the best luxury hotels in Rio.

Hotel Fasano Rio de Janeiro

Fasano has single-handedly revolutionised the city’s hotel scene with its superior service and understated cool, making it the place to see and be seen. Elegant to the hilt, the signature dark-wood panelling makes the building as attractive from outside as in. Entry to the guest-only rooftop infinity pool is so sought-after that São Paulo’s high-flyers book rooms on weekends just to facilitate a Saturday afternoon’s lounging across the state border. The impressive suites have drawn the likes of many a celebrity, from Beckham to Beyoncé. Watching the sun set (or indeed rise) over Ipanema beach from your balcony is something magical.

Belmond Copacabana Palace

The dozens of black-and-white photos of Hollywood, rock ‘n’ roll and, indeed, genuine royalty that line the corridors of this gorgeous, neo-classical wedding cake of a hotel hint at the opulence that has been ingrained in it over the years. It very much maintains a classic rather than contemporary style, with vast chandeliers, copious amounts of marble and forests-worth of polished Brazilian wood. Service to the sunloungers on Copacabana Beach includes fresh fruits and coconut water, and the spa is a first-class retreat. Michelin-starred Mee, directed by Ken Hom, completes the picture, as do the stunning black pool and rooftop tennis court.

Hotel Emiliano

If you’re staying at Hotel Emiliano, opt for the sea view and be seduced by the views and sound of crashing of waves. Anyone looking to hit all the classic Rio high notes will find plenty to fawn over here at the southern tip of Copacabana beach. Pop on personalised flip-flops and head to the magnificent rooftop pool that L-shapes in front of the sun-loungers to deliver a stunning tropical refuge. You don’t even have to lift a finger here; friendly and informed staff are eager to please, and the on-call butler, room turn-downs and beach service add to the sense of luxury.

Santa Teresa Hotel RJ MGallery

This converted mansion, once part of a former coffee plantation, is deceptively large, its rustic features preserved and shot through with a dash of contemporary Brazilian style. Palm trees pepper the lush, green gardens and arc over the pool to conjure up a genuine tropical paradise. In keeping with the overall feel of the hotel, all rooms are casually elegant, the muted tones and reclaimed wooden furniture, including rustic four-poster beds in some rooms, creating a cosy feel. The hotel’s Térèze restaurant has collected a raft of awards for its Franco-Brazilian fusions, drawing customers from all over the city.

LSH Hotel
A grown-up hotel in Barra with enough pulling power to tempt visitors away from Ipanema. All rooms have ample balconies, with the lateral as well as front-facing options all getting a fine view of the rolling Atlantic. The glass-bottomed pool a playful reminder that the hotel has been conceived with Miami’s Delano in spirit – complete with Saturday night DJ sets – and exudes the showy Barra lifestyle. Beach service means complimentary towels, parasols, deckchairs and water await whenever you want to venture onto the sand.

Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro
From the strikingly minimal, contemporary lobby to the sandy tones and palm-lined pool, the designers have done their level best to reflect the city’s emblems and distinguish it from cookie-cutter chain hotels. Fantastically high ceilings, open spaces with ‘living’ walls of plants and homages to the great local landscaper Roberto Burle Marx show a genuine effort to interact with the region’s topography and bring the outdoors indoors. The basement spa is pure escapism, mercifully insulated from the joyous weekly samba classes held in the adjacent studio and the pumping limbs of the next-door, high-tech fitness suite.

Israel:

The Miss Universe competition is heading to Israel this year.

Organizers announced Tuesday that the 70th annual competition will be held in Eilat, Israel, in December 2021.

Steve Harvey will return to host the event, which will air live on Fox and Telemundo.

Miss Universe Organization president Paula M. Shugart issued a statement in a press release.

“Israel has been on our shortlist of host countries for a number of years due its rich history, beautiful landscapes, myriad of cultures and appeal as a global tourist destination,” Shugart said.

“We look forward to deepening our commitment and creating meaningful cultural conversation, connection and understanding through this partnership,” she added.

The three-hour event will see contestants compete in multiple categories, including personal statement, swimsuit, evening gown and interview. The competition will culminate with Mexico’s Andrea Meza, who won the 2020 competition, crowning her successor.

“Being the only Miss Universe crowned during the COVID-19 pandemic has made my reign unforgettable,” Meza said. “I hope that the world takes the vaccine as soon as it is available so that, come December, as many people as possible can join the 70th anniversary celebration in Israel.”

Ahead of the competition, contestants will explore “the rich history and culture” of Israel with visits to notable locations. In addition, Meza will visit Israel later this summer.

Carton House, a Fairmont Managed Hotel Opens in Ireland

Ireland:

For more than 250 years, Carton House has been the finest Georgian estate in Ireland. Now, after a two-year, multimillion-euro total renovation of the original house, surrounding hotel and stunning grounds and parkland, it has reopened as part of the Fairmont Hotels portfolio.

Situated in Maynooth, County Kildare, Carton House was once the ancestral home of the Earls of Kildare and the Dukes of Leinster. This walled garden Fairmont estate is surrounded by 1,100 acres of sweeping parkland, ancient woodlands, lakes, and the River Rye and stands as one of Ireland’s most historic country houses.

Martin Mangan, General Manager of Carton House, a Fairmont Managed Hotel, is looking forward to welcoming international guests to the hotel for the estate’s first summer after such a magnificent refurbishment. “Following our domestic re-opening last month, the entire estate could not look more wonderful, and it’s a credit to the owners and to the teams of craftspeople and specialists who have been working to such a high standard for almost two years to bring this important country house back to its original glory. Myself and all the team at Carton House are thrilled to be opening the doors to our international guests, inviting travellers to experience this historic property as it was meant to be experienced. It truly is an extraordinary house to call home this year.”

This is your opportunity to be quite the lord or lady of the manor and experience this spectacular renovation at first-hand and the many new experiences offered within the ancient walls. Whether that’s a tutored wine tasting; a dinner in the cosy and atmospheric setting of Kathleen’s Kitchen, set in the old servants’ kitchens of Carton House; or a delicious picnic basket to enjoy in the resort’s idyllic gardens, parklands and grounds, there are countless treats and treasures to choose from when you stay at Carton House.

You might select a guided whiskey tasting in the cosy book-lined Whiskey Library with its encyclopaedic selection of the world’s finest uisce beatha. Or indulge in Afternoon Tea, seated in one of the beautifully restored grand and imposing rooms in The House with their fascinating history — the stunning Gold Salon, the Drawing Room, the serene Rose Room, the Bell Room — rooms that originally would have entertained aristocratic visitors to Carton House, and take in the same views that have captivated visitors for over 250 years. Have a long-overdue catch-up over light bites and cocktails with family and friends this summer on the outdoor terrace of The Courtyard Bar or have dinner in the impressive surrounds of The Morrison Room — a breath-taking space, The Morrison Room opens today as one of this country’s grandest dining rooms. Luxurious and rejuvenating treatments can be booked in the Carton House Spa & Wellness, a sensory indulgence like no other.

Carton House is home to two championship eighteen-hole golf courses, the challenging links-like course designed by Colin Montgomerie, host to the Irish Open three times, and the classic parkland course designed by Mark O’Meara.

The House is the breath-taking focal feature of a spectacular 1,100-acre estate, the epitome of grandeur and history. Explore the grounds on foot or by bike, following the cycle and walking trails, or enjoy the outdoors by choosing from a wealth of resort activities, from tennis and fishing to horse riding, archery and clay pigeon shooting.

One of Ireland’s most historic country houses, built originally as the home of the influential and aristocratic FitzGerald family, and now in the proud ownership of the American-Irish Mullen family, Carton House is now A Fairmont Managed Hotel. This impressive next chapter as a Fairmont property sees Carton House join the more than 80 Fairmont hotels around the globe as the oldest property in a collection famed for its grande dame hotels, including the iconic Savoy in London and Plaza in New York City.

Sensitively blending past and present, this renovation of Carton House has renewed the beauty of the estate for generations to come. The spectacular 18th century Palladian-style mansion, The House, is at the heart of the estate and will now be the centre of every guest experience today. The remarkably handsome series of grand and imposing rooms in The House with their fascinating history are now beautifully restored and part of the daily rituals of Carton House life and at the heart of each guest’s experience.

Northern Lights in Finland

The Northern lights are simply amazing. You can go on a husky safari, enjoy a reindeer sleigh rade and try snowmobiling.

In Finland, nature’s most spectacular light show, the Aurora Borealis, can be viewed in a range of purpose-built spaces from glass igloos to luxury suites.

The Northern Lights are visible on roughly 200 nights a year – or every other clear night – in Finnish Lapland. The more traditional ways to go Aurora spotting are snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or snowmobile and sled dog touring. If gazing at the dark sky in crispy winter air is not your thing, you can simply add comfort.
